Brickbat: Then They Came for the Museums

A new law in New South Wales, Australia, could force the Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum to destroy or sell 70 percent of its collection. The law requires all pistols and many other types of firearms to be rendered permanently inoperable. That would require parts to be welded together or a steel rod to be inserted into the barrel of a gun and welded in place. Museum officials say if they cannot get the law overturned they will sell the collection overseas.

They probably won't get an exception; The same people who want arms destroyed want history destroyed, so destroying arms in a museum is kind of a two-fer for them.
Yep.
On a day when Reason was busy cheering for the destruction of statues.
Museum officials say if they cannot get the law overturned they will sell the collection overseas.
They don't need to get the law overturned, they just need an exemption amended into the law. Getting an exemption amended into the law is fairly simple, but there is the matter of getting someone to take the time and energy to write the amendment and get it typed up and make copies and file the paperwork and so forth and so on and all of these things cost money that legislators don't have but might be willing to spend if they did have the money. cough, cough
they just need an exemption amended into the law
AKA a loophole
Allowing the epidemic of flintlock pistol murders to continue.
The hand cannon menace must be stopped.
When the crossbow first came to the market, Europeans thought it would cause the end of civilization as they knew it.
Do you know what "loopholes" were originally used for?
When are people going to request that "trigger warnings" use some other term that doesn't include a part of a gun?
Get used to that heavily lopsided power differential now that they have all the working weapons.
Well, there are sill estimated to be over 200,000 unregistered firearms still floating around Australia. They still have periodic 'firearm amnesty' surrender times, and get a few thousand each time, usually from folks who inherited one and don't care for freedom all that much, so they turn in Dad's pest control device.
And of course, we have to keep reminding people that firearms are NOT the only thing that can be used as a weapon.
they are probably worried the demolition man will enter their museum and start shooting everything up since we know from movies all the guns in museums are always loaded to the max
Easily solvable.
Just call up John Spartan and team him with Dennis Leary.
Plus, Wesley isn't as formidable if you keep the coke away from him.
That reminds me, I figured out a timer mechanism for triggering a fumigation bomb in case someone wants to be at the airport by the time the flammable pesticide interacts with the scented candle he accidentally left lit in his apartment. Simply attach something light that holds water, like the cap to a can of spray paint, to the trigger for the fumigation bomb with the open end of that object turned up. Then let the sink in the bathroom slowly drip water. Position the improvised device under the dripping faucet so that the dripping water fills the cap and its weight triggers the fumigation bomb. Try it once or twice without the candle lit to make sure it works before that vacation in GMT +1 and GMT +2.
My flight back to metropolitan NYC is on Mother's Day, if I'm not commenting here again by late May, presume that I interacted with TSA, or DHS, or the FBI, or ISIS, or homicidal neo-Nazis, or a drug cartel, or a psychiatric ward, or prison, or (and this one could be scary) my friend's co-parent. By George! The list of people who want me neutralized keeps getting longer.
What could be safer than decisions you did not make being forced upon you under threat of violence.
If community safety is your priority you should offer free courses in gun safety, maintenance and marksmanship.
And an issue of 200 rounds a week for practice?
If you are going to dream, dream big.
And a couple case of whatever swill* they call beer down under. Now that's some welfare I can get behind.
*Fosters is terrible, I don't really know if they drink that or if its just marketing to Americans. But if that is the best they can offer, my swill comment stands.
From what I have heard from Australians, Fosters is not considered a good beer in Australia.
It's funny how cheap swill from other countries is often marketed as something premium in the US.
In fairness, it often is premium when marketed overseas. That is, it's a completely different product.
Budweiser, for example, is considered a pedestrian beer in the US and a premium beer in Germany - and having tasted it in both places, both those statements are true because they are different beers despite the common name.
For another example (non-beer), in Europe Aldi's is a high-end grocery brand while in the US it's a discount brand with a very different mix of products and pricing strategies.
Budweiser Budvar is an older beer that the American Budweiser was named after. Is that the one you had?
Could well be. I had Budvar in the Czech Republic 18 years back and it was a decent drink, whereas US Bud as I recall is insipid pondwater at best. (Disclaimer, I am not a big fan of beer, so I may have been missing something.)
In Europe there are two Aldi's. One is high end, the other, not so much.
When Aldi came to America, the high end version was called Trader Joe's.
Meh. Fosters isn't that bad.
It's also usually pretty cheap.
The Egyptians provided a proto-beer instead of food stamps to migrant construction workers to prevent them from questioning the utility of capital investments in pyramids. Then an insider who grew up under the care of Child Protective Services (after his mother had neglected to follow state child care policies for the sons of migrant families) blew the whistle on history's first pyramid scheme thanks to an inspiring encounter with an awesome bush.
A disarmed citizenry is better to sell $20 packs of smokes to.
If they have to sell off some of their guns, can someone please let me know when and where?
The law requires all pistols and many other types of firearms to be rendered permanently inoperable.
NSW police and military hardest hit.
If the police and law-abiding citizens weren't armed, criminals wouldn't need guns.
Hihn said that. Seriously.
That tracks with the crime trends in Great Britain after each round of gun control. Gun crime down a bit, violent crime up overall. Seems that crooks know about knives, clubs, and fists.
To some extent that is true. You don't need a gun to rob an old lady if you know the old lady doesn't have a gun. You just need a knife or a club or some muscle. It's almost as if guns don't guarantee safety, but do wonders to level the field...
That explains why lobbyists from the denture industry support gun control. I wonder how Tyrone is doing.
Well it was a museum where Simon Phoenix got his weaponry.
I should have read all the comments first
Simon Phoenix didn't even really need weapons in that pussed out LA.
Only thing the movie got wrong was the authorities sporting the same restricted weaponry as the citizens.
Real progressives always widen gaps between themselves and the proles
The Taliban and ISL are pretty good at destroying contraband in museums too.
I would gladly take the guns off of their hands.
Also, Aussieland is an authoritarian shithole.
