Joe Biden Courts Blue Collar Voters, Says 'I Am a Union Man'
Plus: A young adult novelist changes her mind about capitulating to the sensitivity mob.

Former Vice President Joe Biden kicked off his campaign with a bid to recapture blue collar union workers Monday.
"I make no apologies," Biden told his audience at the Teamsters Hall in Pittsburgh. "I am a union man."
He thanked United Steelworkers, the American Federation of Teachers, the Service Employees International Union, and the International Association of Fire Fighters for attending.
It's obvious that if he were to win the primary, Biden's general election strategy would revolve around winning Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan—three states where Trump's unique appeal to certain rank-and-file union members essentially won him the election. On Twitter, the president countered that "dues crazy union leadership" may be in the tank for the Democrats, but "the members love Trump."
Biden is currently enjoying a popularity surge among the voters he needs to win the primary. A new poll has him at 36 percent. Bernie Sanders is at 22 percent, followed by Elizabeth Warren at 9 percent and Pete Buttigieg at 8 percent. According to Morning Consult:
Biden's popularity has stayed steady, even amid a string of unflattering news stories in recent months, including his physical contact with women and a resurfaced debate over his handling of the 1991 Supreme Court confirmation hearings involving Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas when he was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Any concerns that those stories may dampen his support with women and black women is not yet borne out by the data. If anything, Biden's advantage over the field relies heavily on edges with those groups: Among women overall, Biden jumped 8 points in the last week, to 38 percent — driven by a 7-point bump with white women (to 36 percent) and a 10-point jump with black women, to 47 percent.

Amelie Wen Zhao has decided to move forward with publication of her debut novel Blood Heir after all. Previously, she had canceled its release because several reviewers in the young adult literary community had branded it racist.
When these accusations first emerged several weeks ago, they struck both New York magazine's Jesse Singal and Vulture's Kat Rosenfield as ill-founded. Zhao's book concerns a fictional princess with magic powers, and is inspired by the tragedy of Anastasia Romanov. Zhao, an Asian immigrant, includes Russian themes, and a significant part of Blood Heir deals with forced labor. But some "sensitivity reviewers" decided that Zhao was really writing about American chattel slavery, having culturally appropriated this aspect of African history. "Racist ass writers, like Amélie Wen Zhao, who literally take Black narratives and force it into Russia when that shit NEVER happened in history—you're going to be held accountable," one early reviewer promised.
This is a wildly off-base criticism, of course. Slavery is not some unique phenomenon that only occurred in the American South; virtually every human society since the dawn of civilization has grappled with slavery—including Russia, where serfdom was not abolished until 1861.
In any case, it's good that Zhao has decided to publish the book, although she has apparently revised it to be more pleasing to the hyper-woke, according to The New York Times:
After Zhao decided she wanted to release the book, she and her publisher sought feedback from scholars and sensitivity readers in an effort to resolve any ambiguity around the type of indentured labor depicted. They had academics from different multicultural backgrounds, as well as one who studies human trafficking in Asia, evaluate the text, and Zhao added new material and made changes based on their comments. They had additional sensitivity readers vet the book for racial and other stereotypes.
It's unclear whether such efforts will mollify Zhao's critics, or if the release of "Blood Heir" this fall will ignite another cycle of outrage — a backlash to the backlash to the backlash. There's also the risk that the controversy will dampen enthusiasm for the book among readers and booksellers.
But Zhao and her publisher seem more excited than wary that readers will have a chance to evaluate the book for themselves.
"We ultimately think our Y.A. readers are very smart," Marino said. "They can read what they want to read and use their critical thinking skills to work through it."
In all likelihood, most readers would have been perfectly satisfied with the book in its original form. Callout culture's squeakiest wheels make a lot of noise but are few in number.

Burger King is bringing its Impossible Whopper—a hamburger made from 0 percent meat—to all locations nationwide after a successful test launch in St. Louis, Missouri. According to Vox:
The plan for nationwide distribution is further evidence of plant-based meat going mainstream — a huge deal for those who want to see meat alternatives replace actual meat because of concerns over animal cruelty or climate change. If this keeps scaling up, it could help save hundreds of thousands of animals from suffering on factory farms, and it could fight global warming by reducing the number of methane-producing cattle. It could also combat other problems related to our factory-farming system, like antibiotic resistance.
Burger King's announcement caps a month of incredible growth for the alternative meat movement. Earlier this month, Del Taco announced it's partnering with Beyond Meat to offer new meatless tacos. And Qdoba announced that all 730 of its locations will offer Impossible Foods' plant-based meat alternative.

Suck it, Confederacy.
Pretty sure he meant union with female hair.

Clearly the only way forward for us Koch / Reason libertarians is to ally with progressives and democratic socialists. Since they agree with us on immigration.

"Racist-ass reviewers"... *moves the hyphen*... "racist ass-reviewers". There. Much better.
On a serious note, the only response that reviewer should get is to be pointed and laughed at.
Yeah, go ahead and laugh. You're going to be held accountable, too, Bub.
Ugh, an ass-reviewer who can't appreciate black and latino booty? Fucking disgusting.
Our word "slave" is derived from the fact that from medieval times to at least the Reniassance Slavs were so common in slave markets, especially in Muslim countries. Then there is the particularly harsh form of serfdom in Russia. Zhao's critics have a very shallow and embarrassingly ignorant understanding of history of they think forced servitude is a black experience exclusively.

Hard to say - I couldn’t really see half of it the picture was too shitty.
You watched it through your neighbors window too, huh?
I found the episode to be ridiculously dark as well. I have read a few threads where video snobs are scoffing that a professionally calibrated, high-end television in a completely dark room is all that is required for a good viewing experience. Do HBO think that every fan of GoT is an AV nerd? I mean, there are probably at least a few who aren't.

The beginning of it was beyond badass. The Dothraki just disappeared. They were swallowed by a zombie horde. Jorah came back shell shocked. The darkness made it feel like I was watching a nightmare. Ex-Democrat Union people have been leaving the Unions in droves.
Its the economy and jobs that they care about. More and more of them have good jobs and the economy is doing well, even with them NOT being in a union.
Trump will get credit for it.
The other big 2020 voter news will be more and more Black Americans voting for Trump, since his policies to limit regulation have brought about the lowest Black unemployment in over 3 generations.
"Black Americans voting for Trump"
LOL
Sorry, African American voters will overwhelmingly vote against a literal white nationalist who calls neo-Nazis "very fine people."
BTW, if unemployment is low Obama deserves the credit.
Trump would pass Biden’s ‘measure of success’ with flying colors
“The dignity of work is my measure of success,” Joe Biden proclaimed Monday, to cheers from much of the media. Strangely, he set that mark at the first rally in his campaign to replace a president with an astonishing record of boosting workers.
Just last month, employers added nearly 200,000 jobs, and unemployment held at 3.8%, a new low not seen in half a century.
In President Trump’s first two years in office, the economy added more than 5 million jobs, including 467,000 in the manufacturing sector — which was losing jobs when Biden was last in office.
Obama’s vice president can’t admit that Trump is doing what the last administration insisted was impossible. Manufacturing jobs “are just not going to come back,” Obama warned in June 2016.

The economic cycle will always drive voting. When the economy goes bad, it's bad for the incumbent. If the incumbent wins in those situations, it's despite the economy and not because of it.
There was a legitimate concern that there would be a recession a while back with both manufacturing data and inverted yield curve to support it, but the outlook has improved and yield curve isn't inverted anymore.
Hell, we got news today that the European economy is even starting to perk up.

The people of Wisconsin, Michigan, and western Pennsylvania haven't had it so good in terms of the unemployment rate, the labor participation rate, and the increase in wages vs. inflation since the 1960s. If that holds up through October of 2020, I have a hard time believing that Trump will do worse in 2020 in those states than he did in 2019.
That being said, there's a lot that can happen in six quarters.
". . . than he did in [2016]."

Are we about to get another amazing Democratic Presidential candidate?
Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams doesn’t rule out White House bid as she declines to run for Senate
As everyone knows, Abrams actually won the governorship. The only way the Republicans ever win is by cheating, whether it's voter suppression or Russian hacking.
If enough democrats run for president soon there won't be any democrats left to run as governors or as representatives so all you democrats get on the presidential train.
No matter how many amazing candidates they get for the primary, they will end up nominating one of the ancient multi-time losers.
In fact, the more "amazing candidates" enter the primary fray, the more likely the are to nominate one of the ancient multi-time losers.
If Stacey A runs she'll eat all the other candidates lunch.

Yes. It's okay though, I'm just waiting for people to tell me I vote against my own interests. That works every time.
Agreed, I strongly prefer moisten to dampen.
"Good evening, gentlemen and ladies ... and black ladies."
LOL
Biden's main appeal is that he hasn't yet taken a stand on any of the crazy issues that are driving progressives in this election cycle. I just went looking for his stance on the Green New Deal. Of the top six candidates in polling, all of the Democrat candidates support it. If you want to support a Democrat who isn't crazy on issues like the Green New Deal, he's the only guy you've heard of that hasn't gone full retard.
The problem is that 30% is a high measure of support relative to the other primary candidates, but that means some 70% of Democrats are supportive of someone who has gone full retard. Biden is polling even with Sanders in New Hampshire at around 20%. Biden may win outright in Iowa. What happens to his campaign on Super Tuesday, when the smaller candidates have dropped out--not being able to afford to compete in both California and Texas--and California goes to Harris?
'
In short, not having taken a stand on the Green New Deal may be helping him with the 30% of Democrats who aren't nuts, but it may hurt him over the long haul--if 70% of the Democratic vote (and especially the super delegates)--want someone who will go full retard.
Biden does appeal to blue collar workers, and will compete in the 2016 battleground states; PA, OH, WI, MI. He's the only Democrat currently running that has a chance in these states, in my opinion.
I'm talking about the primaries. Before Biden can face off against Trump, he has to win the primaries--and 70% of Democrat voters are supportive of someone else.
A New Green Deal nutjob could easily win the primaries. Pennsylvania isn't even an open primary state. Only Democrats are voting in that contest.
And you still haven't accounted for the super delegates--who run much more radical than the average Democrat. Super delegates make up 15% of the representatives to the nominating convention.
P.S. All those Democrats who wanted to get rid of the electoral college because Trump was elected should explain why they have super delegates at their nominating convention.
Yeah the only appeal of Biden in the primaries, I would assume (I'm not a Democrat voter), is the political pragmatism that he might actually be able to beat Trump.
The Democrats might be at the tipping point of deciding what they want to be as a party; capable of winning national elections from the center, or beholden to the extreme left wing and only competing locally on the coasts and in major metro areas.
Biden is plugged in to the machine. So super-delegates go to him unless another DNC machine candidate is in the running. Or unless they see the writing on the wall - like when they abandoned Hillary for Obama in 2008.
"Before Biden can face off against Trump, he has to win the primaries–and 70% of Democrat voters are supportive of someone else."
True, but given the sheer volume of primary candidates, 30% might be a sufficient plurality to win.
That volume won't last past Super Tuesday. Many of them will drop out before then because they can't generate enough in the way of donations to even make a go of Super Tuesday in both Texas and California. The donors will abandon the laggards and start giving to the few at the top, too.
And don't forget the super delegates who are all activists. That means 15% of the convention is going for the one that goes full retard rather than Biden unless Biden beats the hell out of the rest of the field. If he were up near 50% of primary voters, that might be the case. If there are only two left and Biden and Sanders both get 40% of the vote, then Sanders probably has 55% at the convention.
Biden can win the same way Trump did. All the uber-progs are splitting their votes between everyone else, leaving Biden with a plurality.
I'm pretty sure Biden is a milk toast piece of clay that the Senate and House can mold to their way of thinking. He will sign everything they give him including the green new deal. Not declaring a stance is just as dangerous as having a stance
Even as Drumpf is busy turning this country into a literal theocratic dictatorship like in The Handmaid's Tale, there are still intersectional feminist victories worth celebrating.

I expect Vatican City's walls will be taken down any time now
I find the trope about the Vatican walls pretty silly. But it would be a good gesture of the Pope to take some of these supposed refugees into the Vatican. Surely they need landscapers and roofers there too.
Or how about funding something in the countries these people are coming from so it's less shitty there?
It's an adequate trope when the Pope takes a stand against walls in general.
Your other two points, though, are the real significant ones.
If the Catholic Church were to sell some of their art and real estate, they could probably make a HUGE impact in the 3rd world. Luckily for them, WWJD, is more of a catchy slogan than a way to live.
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."
-- Matthew 19:24
As far as the current Pope is concerned, he seems happier forcing government to confiscate wealth from citizens while the Church remains tax exempt.
I truly wonder. The Church does do a lot of charity around the world. Though all of that is besides the point that dumping more money into things is rarely an actual path to improvement. It's unfortunately much more difficult than that, as trillions in American social spending have shown over the years.
This is neither a defense nor attack on the current Pope. Just that raw dollars spent is not a useful metric charitable work.
sell the Vatican.
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-04-30/venezuela-says-its-putting-down-ongoing-armed-coup-attempt
Theres something strange about the way this whole Guaido thing has been going down
Biden is of course the only "mainstream" establishment candidate the Democrats have; once the children are done playing with their social media he will be guaranteed to get the nomination, and proceed to diffuse any outrageous notions about Green New Deals, reparations, universal basic income, and so forth.
That is the only way Democrats will have a prayer of getting a POTUS elected. But of course he will retain some of the more "progressive" notions about getting rid of the electoral college and student loan forgiveness. Just enough to keep them all on board and of course unite to vote against Trump.
Hey, what about Bernie?
If a multi-time presidential campaign loser is the only chance they have, Trump's re-election is almost a forgone conclusion.
Hey, he's a "union man" now! They will likely get back in line and vote as they are told.
You know that makes him sound like the lamest super hero ever.
Never fear Union Man is here!
Ever notice that there is no union for democratic candidates?

Steve Silverman, the slimy lawyer for Baltimore’s corrupt, missing, and on the lam mayor Catherine Pugh, claimed that some sort of decision would be made today.
I don’t believe the weasel for a second. I think she intends to continue dodging the feds and collecting that sweet paycheck until the city changed the laws to allow them to impeach her and remove her from office, which hopefully will happen soon.
We've been talking about the Green New Deal a lot lately. I think it's important for people to know what we're talking about.
1) “Guaranteeing a job with a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations, and retirement security to all people of the United States.”
2) “Providing all people of the United States with – (i) high-quality health care; (ii) affordable, safe, and adequate housing; (iii) economic security; and (iv) access to clean water, clean air, healthy and affordable food, and nature.”
3) “Providing resources, training, and high-quality education, including higher education, to all people of the United States.”
4) “Meeting 100 percent of the power demand in the United States through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources.”
5) “Repairing and upgrading the infrastructure in the United States, including . . . by eliminating pollution and greenhouse gas emissions as much as technologically feasible.”
6) “Building or upgrading to energy-efficient, distributed, and ‘smart’ power grids, and working to ensure affordable access to electricity.”
7) “Upgrading all existing buildings in the United States and building new buildings to achieve maximal energy efficiency, water efficiency, safety, affordability, comfort, and durability, including through electrification.”
8) “Overhauling transportation systems in the United States to eliminate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector as much as is technologically feasible, including through investment in – (i) zero-emission vehicle infrastructure and manufacturing; (ii) clean, affordable, and accessible public transportation; and (iii) high-speed rail.”
9) “Spurring massive growth in clean manufacturing in the United States and removing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing and industry as much as is technologically feasible.”
10) “Working collaboratively with farmers and ranchers in the United States to eliminate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector as much as is technologically feasible.”

All the top six Democrats are on the record supporting this (or some version of it), except for Biden who doesn't seem to have said anything about it yet.
Trump called it an insane plan to destroy the economy.
If the Democrats nominate someone who supports the Green New Deal, I'm voting for Trump because I'm a libertarian capitalist and that means nothing if I don't use my vote to oppose authoritarian socialism. Why use my vote to protest against authoritarian socialism by voting for a Libertarian when I can use my vote to prevent an authoritarian socialist from getting into office?
Well, you do live in CA, don't you?
I think other libertarian capitalists in other states should vote for Trump to prevent an authoritarian socialist from taking office, too.
If they passed the Green New Deal sometime during the next Democrat president's term, when they tried to implement it (for ten years), I suspect the reaction would be so tremendous that even California might vote Republican again.
The Green New Deal is far more radical than what they did in Australia and France, and the reactions to higher energy costs there were to kick the government out of office in Australia and in France, the yellow vest protests are still ongoing.
If even California went Republican because the Green New Deal was being implemented in response to price changes, I'd expect radical progressives to embrace authoritarianism in response to the public outcry. The question might get ridiculous about the loyalty of our military. Here's how authoritarian the Green New Deal is: not only is the program authoritarian itself, it's likely to inspire authoritarianism. You can't maintain something as economically destructive as the Green New Deal for ten years by democratic means, and the only means to remove the authoritarian president that decides to remain in power and not hold an election is for the military to step in and assume control.
That's why I think there is no real intention to pass the GND. But who knows anymore. I think you are right, though, if it did pass the economic hardship would likely be enough to change people's voting habits.
Though if it ends with something like the yellowvests calling for more of a different kind of socialism, I'm not sure how great that is. But this isn't France where the main political battle is between left-wing socialism and right-wing socialism.
Biden will pay whatever lip service is necessary to the GND to get the progtard votes. He won’t have to work very hard because he is already the anti-Trump. in fact, he could even tell them that GM will start making 1978 Buick Regals again to stop climate change and they will eat it right up.
My concern is that if Biden gets in office--no matter what he says--I don't trust him to veto the Green New Deal if the Democrats get control of both houses at some point during his term. It's not enough to not say he supports it. I need to know that he'll go against his own party to veto it.
Otherwise, a protest vote for a Libertarian isn't enough for a libertarian capitalist. We need someone in there that we know will veto this authoritarian socialist program every step of the way and doesn't that necessitate voting for Trump?
I’m not too worried about the GND because most of it is fantasy and any attempt to implement it will be fought in court by the affected parties. In the meantime, it will cost the dems the critical soccer mom vote and probably eat into their support among latinos too, who depend more on cars to get around than rich white progtards do.
I hope you're right.
I'm not sure that the soccer mom vote isn't behind environmentalism now, and depending on Latinos to vote for Republicans might be a hard sell right now.
I'm also not too sure about the courts. They might just give us a "penaltax" ruling.
But I hope you're right.
I'll be happier when the Democrats stop hating the white, blue collar, middle class that's supposed to be their bread and butter, and we go back to arguing over taxes and spending--rather than transforming America into a environmental paradise run by authoritarian socialists.
Soccer moms are a privileged class who vote with their purses above all else. If the democrats make them pay $100 to fill up the minivan each week and they have to choose between that and paying for their kids tutor or piano lesson or getting a bikini wax, or shopping at Aldi instead of Wegmans they are going to be pretty pissed.
This would be on top of the wealth tax they will be paying under a Democrat regime
We need someone in there that we know will veto this authoritarian socialist program every step of the way and doesn’t that necessitate voting for Trump?
Better the authoritarian you know...
We've settled for the lesser of two evils for decades now, and look what that has gotten us.
Yeah, but this time it will be the most important vote ever. That’s no time to be throwing away your vote.
"We’ve settled for the lesser of two evils for decades now, and look what that has gotten us."
Just imagine, HRC as Madame POTUS, and a Democrat majority in both houses of Congress. Merrick Garland on the Supreme Court and another overtly liberal no compromise nominee, and literally hundreds a vacant judicial appointments being filled by same.
Instead of asking where has it gotten us, perhaps it might be better to ask where is hasn't.
+1
We’ve settled for the lesser of two evils for decades now
And that will probably continue until there is a lot less evil to be done in government.
That's still not enough to get me to vote for Trump. But it seems to be the reality of the situation.
I voted Libertarian in 2016; I will not this time around.
Sure Trump is a total asshole from any perspective; but he is till preferable to what any Democrat would do to us.
Just imagine the federal courts with 30+% of judges recommended by the Federalist Society, and a majority on the Supreme Court of the same. It might actually hold the country together and stymie real damage of progressive dreams for a couple of generations.
I'm boycotting voting until "none of the above" is on the ballot.
Having NOTA on the ballot is not enough. It has to be possible for NOTA to win, triggering a do-over election and no one who lost to NOTA should be permitted to run in the do-over.
It's gotten us the best damn country in da woild.

nice thing about electric cars and electric trains is the government can turn it all off anytime they like when they decide certain groups of people shouldn't be allowed to travel. wether they be anti-vacsers or people of differing political views hoping to make their voices heard. an authoritarians dream. the Chinese aren't even to that point yet
If they did this in ten years, the price of energy would spike so high, we might all be reduced to using public transportation, too.
Meanwhile, the rest of the economy would be disrupted in so many ways, it's hard to predict how bad it would be and what would break first.
The transformation of the Venezuelan economy took 20 years. They want to do it in half the time. It should be noted that Chavez was popular, too. You can't sustain that kind of transformation by democratic means, however. You can't destroy the economy and maintain power by democratic means.
Venezuela started out as a popular movement. People just don't understand what the consequences will be of socialism until price signals make it real. It doesn't cost anything to vote for a Green New Deal candidate. When your gas, electricity, heating, and air conditioning bills go through the roof, shit gets real, but by then, it's too late.
"When your gas, electricity, heating, and air conditioning bills go through the roof"
... not to mention when your freedoms go down the drain...
They can shut down roads and public transportation anytime they want to now.
Armed personal helicopters for everyone is the only libertarian solution.
No they can't. The number of people necessary to do that far exceeds what they have available.
If you had said freeways and interstates, then yes. But all roads? Absurd.
Despite the federal numbering, interstates are state highways.
It would take an extraordinary "national security" event to allow the federal government to assert the kind of police powers to close down highways nationally. OTOH, the states have virtually unlimited power to close highways within their own borders.
I give you New Orleans.
Just a difference in scale.
Illegally and unconstitutionally, the US Army backed up the police in door to door warrantless searches and confiscations of private property. The property was allowed to deteriorate and never returned even after losing in court.

Looks like I will finally not vote for anyone for POTUS in 2020. Maybe I will if Amash runs, but seriously, what is the point? I’ll just sit back and watch the two biggest assholes and their groupies battle it out.
plant-based meat
Stop that.
Unless someone also creates some animal based vegetables.
Oh, there are *plenty* of those. 8-(
"Racist ass writers, like Amélie Wen Zhao, who literally take Black narratives and force it into Russia when that shit NEVER happened in history—you're going to be held accountable," one early reviewer promised.
Her NAME is culturally appropriated. Check Mate.
The point most people seem to have missed about Bill Clinton's "apology for slavery" when he was visiting West African countries in the 90s was that he was, in effect, apologizing to the descendents of the people who captured and sold into slavery the ancestors of today's African-Americans.
Actually, I'm curious what others think about this.
The question that occurs to me is, does the term "African-American" apply only to the descendents of slaves imported into the United States of America, or does it apply to the descendents of all of the slaves imported into all of both of the entire continents of North and South America?
>>>"I am a union man."

No, that's not what Biden said.
He didn't say, "I'm a union man."
He said, "I'm a union goon."
Get it right.
Which union was he a member of before he got into politics? And his father? What union did his father belong to?
