Cops Charge University of Arizona Students With Misdemeanors for Disrupting Event
"Student protest is protected by our support for free speech, but disruption is not."

Two University of Arizona students face misdemeanor charges after disrupting a Career Day event that featured border patrol officers.
The incident took place on March 19. The officers were speaking with students inside a classroom when two activists entered the classroom and began heckling. One, a female student, shouted "murder patrol" continuously at the officers and claimed that their presence on campus made her unsafe. Organizers asked her to leave, but she refused. The activists later followed the officers outside, where a larger group of protesters were waiting.

"University police determined today they will be charging two of the students with interference with the peaceful conduct of an educational institution, a misdemeanor," said Arizona President Robert Robbins in a statement.
The students may also be facing academic sanctions.
Robbins argued that this was a free speech issue: Protesting the officers was acceptable, but not if it meant disrupting the event.
"At the core of these inquiries is the University of Arizona's commitment to free speech," said Robbins. "The student club and the CBP officers invited by the students should have been able to hold their meeting without disruption. Student protest is protected by our support for free speech, but disruption is not."
The university did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

They've been interrupting Jordan Peterson and other, quite interesting, speakers for ages....funny how when the event involves some low-life law enforcement of some sort: charges brought against protesters.....what a waste of space all cops are.
Right? The headline got me interested, but then I see that they were arrested for protesting the cops that ended up arresting them. Turns out, it's dog bites man after all.
They heckled the Border Patrol agents but are being charged by University Police so they are NOT being charged by those they heckled.
So cops flavor "A" stick up for cops flavor "B", but neither cops flavored "A" nor "B" will stick up for the free-speech (no-heckling-allowed) rights of politically conservative or libertarian civilian (non-cop) speakers.
That makes me as a non-cop feel SOOOO much better!
Based on a number of unpleasant incidents we have had here at NYU with certain "hecklers," to say nothing of the "satirists" who are even worse, I would urge UA authorities to make sure that as many individuals involved in this event as possible are arrested, prosecuted for their crimes, and expelled from the university. There should be absolutely no tolerance at all for this "free speech" baloney we keep hearing about. See the documentation of our nation's leading criminal "parody" case at:
https://raphaelgolbtrial.wordpress.com/
"I am paying for this microphone"
Well, the students usually aren't paying, but they paid tuition, and the right to book a room and use it in peace comes with that payment.
There's nothing mysterious about this. They have a right to use the room without disruption. It's the job of the police of that jurisdiction to enforce that right. If they are ordered not to by the local civil authorities ( how did University Presidents become Mayors with their own police forces?), the civil authorities are denying the students disrupted the equal protection of the law, and should be sued under the Ku Klux Klan Act.
The original idea was that university cops were a protection against "state" cops abusing civil liberties on campus. Academic freedom and free speech and all.
Not that it works that way
Maybe the original rationalization.
^This guy gets it, haha.
But of course, though, people act as if the politicians in this country are the number one threat to liberty....the reality, is that the police simply should not be allowed to continue to exist. If you dont have thugs willing to inflict your crazed will in the form of unjust laws on others, then you can't violate anyone's God-given rights.
Since the police act so much like they're soldiers, my solution is to hang the next pig that tramples someone's right by the neck, short drop style so we can all watch them kick and struggle, until dead. Guaranteed this country would be back on track, overnight, lol.
Who protects us from criminals then?
Smith & Wesson of course...
When is the last time you were "protected" from a criminal by a cop? Do you suddenly feel at ease when one pulls up behind you in traffic, given your increased safety by proximity? The reality is that cops won't lift a finger to investigate a burglary, but will be right there ready to escalate things if you are "contacted" for a perceived violation.
Either there aren't any more slaves to round up anymore and the slave patrols should be disbanded, or they've found new slaves and it's us.
Re-reading my comment I notice that I skipped right over "protecting from" or "preventing" a burglary. While I'm sure they relish the opportunity to hassle an adult on a kids' bike in a residential neighborhood, home protection is still squarely on the homeowner's shoulders.
"muh anarchy"
I earned $9000 last month by working online just for 7 to 8 hours on my laptop and this was so easy that i myself could not believe before working on this site. GBd If You too want to earn such a big money then come?2019 news

Yeah man, the POTUS and the SCROTUS and the cops deserve the protection of the cops, but the rest of us do not... That clearly seems to be the lesson of the day here...
What an asinine take on this. Do you also believe UA has national jurisdiction? What the fuck are you rambling about? Hint... different regions handle the SJW bullshit differently.
Peterson has never been to the University of Arizona. Or do you think UA cops have national jurisdiction?
"They've been interrupting Jordan Peterson and other, quite interesting, speakers for ages"
And the police should have been enforcing the law in those situations as well.
Now if only this was extended to other politically-incorrect disruptions.
Too bad Arizona administration doesnt run other campus police departments...
I'm all for free speech, but I mean come on.
As soon as you get so disruptive that you shut down another person's speech, especially in a non-public place (although, yes, I guess this was technically a public event, it was still hosted by an organization that has every right to toss people out), then no, that is no longer about freedom of speech. You can't shut down somebody else's.
One, a female student, shouted "murder patrol" continuously at the officers and claimed that their presence on campus made her unsafe.
Tedious.
I don't get whats so horrible about patrolling for murderers...
So all of those who cross lines in the sand w/o proper papers are murderers?
If that's what you're saying, you're just an evil troll!
"So all of those who cross lines in the sand w/o proper papers are murderers?"
Finally! Someone gets it!
"University police determined today they will be charging two of the students with interference with the peaceful conduct of an educational institution, a misdemeanor,"
Nice.
Yeah, the First Amendment doesn't protect your right to violate someone else's rights with your speech any more than the Second Amendment protects your right violate someone else's right with your gun.
You're free to do as you please so long as you don't violate anyone's rights, and if you do violate someone's rights, protecting people's rights is well within the legitimate responsibility of libertarian government.
The accused, of course, are entitled to due process and a jury trial and counsel and the right to remain silent. This appears to be as it should be.
It will be an adventure in self-discipline for these defendants to exercise their right to remain silent...let's see if they're up to it.
"Student protest is protected by free speech, but disruption is not."
This should be part of the code of conduct of every single publicly-funded university in the nation. It should be a requirement prior to qualifying for any federal or state funding.
Hooray for more regulation and the threat of holding funding hostage!
Using the tools you have is infinitely more useful than crying for things that will most certainly never come to pass.
How about we federally defund the whole fucking thing?
I'd be happy to take away your "tool" permanently than allow you to continue wielding it.
Win-win for education.
Hey, I'm right there with ya, buddy. But we're currently over here talking about things that could actually happen. Feel free to join the discussion when you're ready to be an adult.
You're better solution is...what Gozer?
Funding SHOULD be held hostage.
Yeah, STOP FUCKING SUBSIDIZING COLLEGE EDUCATION!!!
Start there. Most of this bullshit will go away once colleges actually start focusing on education and not safe fucking spaces. When college shifted its charter away from academics and toward political activism, that's when this problem manifested. If we move the focus back to academics and take away all of the perks, then you'll only be left with serious students in education instead of this money-4-education cartel we have now.
I should know, I'm a fucking college professor! Sit down and shut the fuck up or leave my classroom.
Entertaining bullshit like this in college removes any authority the instructor has in the classroom.
I'm totally for shouting about things that will never happen too!!
All speech is protected. It's easy for students to boo the hecklers out, whereas with restrictions it's also way too easy to falsely accuse people of 'disruption'. You could sneeze and end up with a criminal record.
"You could sneeze and end up with a criminal record."
Who said anything about making disruption illegal? I think sneezing should get you in trouble with the school administration, not the police.
Actually, the article above points out that making a disruption is already illegal (at least, in this jurisdiction). Only a misdemeanor but still illegal.
Agreed that it has potential for abuse - but your own comment about hecklers shows that the potential for abuse is bilateral. I see the potential abuse as no worse than the potential to abuse the definition of battery - a crime that we have a fairly long history of seeing courts sort out without crossing constitutional boundaries.
Yeah, I totally agree with everything you said.
Also, freedom of association also not protected? Why is a protester's right to speech more important than the speaker's right to speech? Is the protester somehow not able to exercise their speech outside to auditorium (or classroom?)
"Student protest is protected by free speech, but disruption is not."
"This should be part of the code of conduct of every single publicly-funded university in the nation. It should be a requirement prior to qualifying for any federal or state funding."
==================
The left has handed Trump and/or GOP an issue he / they can score points on, thusly: Submit a sense-of-the-senate resolution endorsing the expulsion and prosecution of such disruptors and hold the Dems' feet to the fire. See if they'll vote against it, or vote Present, or vote for it. (If the Stupid Party had any sense, it would have played this card decades ago.)
PS: Going further, submit a resolution endorsing the elimination or reduction of federal funding to colleges that won't expel disruptors. Maybe that threat-on-the-horizon will stiffen some spines.
About fucking time.
+1
Best response.
Free speech in America's re-education camps died with the Port Huron statement.
I met one of the authors of the Port Huron Statement. The original Port Huron Statement.
Not the compromised second draft. Cool guy, smoked a lot of weed. Pretty good bowler.
Why would the parents not snatch that stupid bitch bald headed and they yanked her out of college for this ?
It's tempting to go to one of the other sides' events and do the same, but of course that would be lowering yourself to their level.
On the other hand, the time-honored way of dealing with bullies is to punch back harder, so to hell with the "lowering yourself crap" time to punch back...and harder.
", so to hell with the "lowering yourself crap" time to punch back...and harder."
Bingo.
The fundamental moral mistake of the Right, for a century, is mistaking complicity in one way rules as supporting the rules, instead of betraying them.
One way ceasefire is surrender
One way rule of law is subjection
One way civility is subservience
Yup. And the thing about non-lefties is they tend to be more organized, methodical, polite, etc. So in many ways right wing protesters will almost be even more intimidating to the commies because of how much less of a rabble they will be.
It is true though that America has basically been lost on the false premise of the "We can't sink to their level." argument. All that has meant is that non leftists have got their asses kicked, because the left has cheated at every step. Sane people cannot continue to allow this to go on. If that means fighting dirty (which it does), then so be it.
"because the left has cheated at every step"
The Left defects on all the cease fires that make western civilization possible: violence, censorship, judicial authoritarianism, economic in group preference, social in group preference.
Reciprocity is a fundamental principle of Western Civilization underlying all others.
One way ceasefire is suicide
One way rule of law is subjection
One way civility is subservience
To grant the benefits of those principles without reciprocity is to betray those principles, not uphold them. Rewarding Evil with the fruits of Good betrays the Good.
Basic game theory. Players will defect as long as it's a net win. Make defectors *pay a price* unless you love to lose.
All true.
Seems rational. "I worry you will kill me...so I will follow you and be a bit of an asshole"
Yep. Makes sense to me.
I afraid the bear will eat me, so I will poke it with a stick to be sure it focuses attention on me.
Damn fine logic classes they teach there. Of course, she probably flunked.
They only pretend they are afraid. They know the bear won't do shit unless of course you disrupt some event sponsored by one of the special victim classes. Then even a peep out of you will get you arrested.
Well presumably they only murder unrepresented illegal aliens, not privileged upper class citizens like that girl.
The "unsafe" claim is just an excuse people use to silence others.
If they really felt unsafe, they would stay away, and comment from a distance.
"Unsafe"
The Left always projects their crimes on the Right.
Every accusation from the Left is a confession.
In this case, their *eagerness* to engage in violence.
"I feel unsafe" means "you're not safe around me".
TUCSON IN THE NEWS!
My Alma Mater. Go Cats.
Finally a university has declared you have a right to protest but not act like thugs and disrupt anything you decide is offensive. The other part of the story is the female said the presence of the Border Patrol officers made her "feel unsafe", why? Is she in this country illegally? We have adults in universities who believe they have some special right to never be faced with any thought action, or word they find offensive. Yet when it happens, they claim they are "fighting fascism" by becoming fascists. They justify the use of violence as "self defense" and demand "safe spaces". Yet, Democrats insist we should let 16 yr. olds vote when the 18- 22 yr. olds right now in college are incredibly immature? These two will learn that their rights do not override the rights of others. They can protest outside, but the people in attendance had the right to listen to their INVITED guests. The protesters do not have the right to deny them.
"Finally a university has declared you have a right to protest but not act like thugs and disrupt anything you decide is offensive. "
Enforce the law. It was never complicated.
I would recommend going to their office and protesting instead. More effective, and is also only about a 40 minute drive. Hell, they can go protest at the border if they want. It's only an hour.
Once we start expelling people for this sort of thing I bet we see a lot less of it.
barely qualified as a protest. that chick was boring and a terrible cameraman
She really was zooming in and out a lot. It was intense.
She should go to jail for being an annoying twot.
All it took was an Executive Order from Trump...
The God Emperor Saves America Again!
communism is a cancer on America and must be exterminated.
Exterminated? Are you trying to be Duterte or the Dalek Supreme?
Next step: Campus cops arrest disruptive students in a case which *doesn't* involve "professional courtesy."
We're waiting...
Fair enough. We'll have to see if this is just Cop Privilege or new, general commitment to enforcing the law.
Living in Tucson I can tell you it is a cesspool of noxious leftists. Anyone sending their kid there is not understanding the extreme views being promoted across the faculty. Beautiful, wildly overfunded campus full of idealogues.
Yer all talking like dbags. A group of individuals caked "Border Patrol" has a right to meet with other individuals without being harassed. Got nothing to do with cops. Morons.
No, genius, of course Border Patrol recruiters have the right to meet without disruption, but - note carefully -
-So do provocateurs like Milo, whose presence at Berkeley led to arson and heckler's veto
-So do controversial figures like the guy who was disrupted by the cowbell dude without the police interfereing
-So do academics like Charles Murray, whose speech was disrupted
etc.
Those are the "wrong speak" people though so the cops just watch even physical violence occur.
Then if you fight back, see Proud Boys NYC, they arrest those defending themselves.
Called not caked. Caked in excrement, maybe.
""University police determined today they will be charging two of the students with interference with the peaceful conduct of an educational institution, a misdemeanor," said Arizona President Robert Robbins in a statement.
The students may also be facing academic sanctions."
It was always as simple as that. Enforce the law.
Enforce the law against Leftist thugs and their State enablers.
The organizers of the event who booked the room have a right to hold their event without disruption. Every jurisdiction has laws against disorderly conduct and trespass. When Campuses direct Police to withold enforcement of those laws, they are violating the civil rights of the students who booked the room, and should be sued under the Ku Klux Klan Acts.
Wow, even in this case, where fellow cops are the ones being disrupted, where were the campus cops during the actual disruption? Were they even there?
Apparently not, because I heard someone talk about *calling* the cops.
GOOD. More of these kinds of shitty people need to be getting punished. If they'd just been giving out proper slaps on the wrist when things started getting out of control, it would have never turned into the outright chaos it often is nowadays. These ones weren't even anywhere close to the worst, but it needs to be zero tolerance for harassing/shutting down speakers. Maybe if things go back to being a little more sane it can go back to "You've got detention for this shit!" levels of punishment... But for now being overly harsh to get the point across may be needed.

Surprised that anything happened. If you doubt the double standard try this tough and you will be instantly hauled away. Try and disrupt a Black Lives Matter event anywhere even a little bit.
Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail.

This is great! I'm not surprised that pushback against the leftist mob started in Arizona. Well done Wildcats!
It's about damn time. I just hope that the next person who tries to stop a speech by Ben Shapiro or Milo Y. gets similarly arrested.
In a speech forum that someone has paid to use, his right of free speech (and his audience's right to hear him) rightfully trump anyone else's. Anyone who disagrees with that is not a libertarian.
Based on the video, removing/barring them from the classroom was appropriate. I don't see any reason to criminalize the matter beyond that.
"Student protest is protected by our support for free speech, but disruption is not."
Isn't this so apparent as to be banal? Although, if you're not a wimp, you can tolerate a modicum of heckling during a speech.
Every snowflake needs a blizzard dumped on them now and then.
so you're a Trumpistani RWNJ. Got it.
That escalated quickly
I disagree with this being a law. The school should expel them
Next the teachers will be arresting kids for asking questions the teachers don't like disturbing the class.
