Stop Listening to the Spymasters and Generals
The Mueller report is a timely reminder not to take John Brennan and James Clapper seriously.

For weeks, former CIA Director John Brennan has hinted that he believed Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation would end with the indictment of President Trump or another member of the Trump family. He suggested as much during a recent appearance on MSNBC, in which host Lawrence O'Donnell desperately tried to convince his audience that Brennan knew something they didn't.
Now that Attorney General William Barr has received Mueller's report, and is not considering charges against the Trump family, Brennan is singing a different tune.
"I don't know if I received bad information, but I think I suspected there was more than there actually was," he admitted on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program Monday morning.
Former FBI Director James Comey appeared completely stumped, and tweeted a picture of himself staring at the water with the caption, "Geologic time offers useful perspective."
Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who for weeks promoted the idea that Trump is an "unwitting asset" of Russian President Vladimir Putin, maintained that the cloud of suspicion had not been lifted—indeed, he said this even before the summary of the report had been released.
"I doubt that the Mueller report is going to explain the strange and disturbing deferential behavior of the president toward Vladimir Putin, his refusal to call out the Russians for their meddling in the election, to the extent I assert in my book, I think the Russians actually turned the election for Trump," Clapper told CNN.
Clapper, readers may recall, once lied under oath to Congress about the National Security Agency's warrantless electronic surveillance of U.S. citizens.
The "deep state" theory—the idea that a shadow government of military and intelligence officials secretly runs the government, or is working to subvert Trump's White House—currently beloved by many conservative activists is excessively conspiratorial. But it is true that many people in media, in politics, and the broader public at large are all too willing to give the benefit of the doubt to intelligence officials who got things very wrong, violated civil liberties, and misled Congress.
Neither the military, nor the CIA, nor the FBI, nor any other branch of the federal government is immune to politics. Many like to pretend that Brennan is some objective, just-the-facts purveyor of raw information, but he's just as self-interested as anyone else in politics.
Blindly trusting the intelligence community has had disastrous results, and one of the few admirable things about Trump is that he's not been afraid to disregard the opinions of those who seem to always prefer the military option over the diplomatic one. It's long past time the rest of us did the same.

The Mueller report is a timely reminder not to take John Brennan and James Clapper seriously
As if anyone with half a brain needed reminding.
CNN does...oh right, you said they had to have at least half a brain.
James Clapper has lied over and over again for whatever war he is promoting at the moment,, a real menace.
This time he's not promoting a war, he's promoting his book.
Disappointing take from Reason. In fact, I will continue listening to the mainstream media (except Faux News, of course) because they are brave truth-seekers whose "bias" is only toward informative, reality-based journalism.
Michelle Goldberg of the New York Times and MSNBC has a great summary of recent developments: The media's biggest failure in Russiagate is letting Trump get away with pretending to be exonerated by a four-page letter from Trump's own AG that quotes Mueller saying his report "does not exonerate him."
It only took 25 million, 2 years, and a failed soft coup attempt for Reason to write and article like this.
Be patient. Regaining your libertarianism is almost as hard as regaining your virginity.
If they paid any attention they could have set themselves up as one of the most credible news and opinion orgs.
This whole thing set off every libertarian bell in my head. Every bit of research pointed to this being a political hit job elevated into a coup attempt.
Reason dropped the ball and could have really given libertarianism a ton of credibility. Instead they wait until the rest of the idiots figure out what happened and write "tough" articles when every bit of risk is gone.
I feel the same way. I've been a libertarian since the mid 90's and followed the evolution of the surveillance state ever since. I knew by September 2016 that Russian collusion was a hit job, because I knew how easy it would have been to find evidence if it were real. I even guessed they'd file for a FISA to CYA. It's all played out precisely as I expected.
I would have expected any libertarian interested in this kind of thing to figure this out, and it would have been a winning case for libertarian ideas and objective reasoning. It's sad that Reason has taken so long to see what was so mind-blowingly obvious from the start.
Credibility, or cocktail party invites?
"could have really given libertarianism a ton of credibility"
You think Reason exists to make libertarianism credible? The opposite of the truth. It exists to discredit libertarianism.
The Prosecution submits Exhibit A: Shikha Dalmia.
The Prosecution rests.
So. Who has read the report. Anyone here?
Still holding put hope? Maybe Mueller wrote something down he didnt understand and your love of hardy boys will string together the final clue?
Good point. Barr probably lied about the contents of the most anticipated document in the world. I bet he expects no one will ever, ever see the real one! He came out of retirement to risk his good name just to save Trump.
Right? The premise is beyond stupid, but no way we will accept that there was actually no collusion and Hillary lost because she is a terrible candidate and a terrible person. Democrats made such a huge deal about the fact the POTUS refused to publically state he would accept the outcome of the election if he lost and yet it is they who still refuse to accept they rigged the system to nominate someone the public does not like. They keep pointing to the popular vote trying to convince themselves that they were somehow cheated which is exactly what they did when they lost in 2000 and 2004. The safe harbor statute states that for electors to be recognized, they must be selected no later than 35 days after the election. The day the SCOTUS stepped in was exactly 35 days so their action was according to the law, yet Democrats still insist they stole the election for the GOP because they did not let Gore keep recounting until he won as he wanted. When they win, it is because they have a mandate yet when they lose, it is because of fraud or some other malfeasance. Unreal....
Minor correction: Kerry lost the popular vote in 2004.
Funny, Trump wasn't President when this meddling allegedly occurred.
I wonder who was and why THAT person didn't do anything...
It wasn't 'strange and disturbing' behavior back then.
Back then it was flexibility.
It's weird that most of reason now believes words have more meaning than actions.
"'Reality' is a socially constructed Narrative of the white supremacist cisheteropatriarchy used to oppress marginalized peoples"
"...to the extent I assert in my book, I think the Russians actually turned the election for Trump," Clapper told CNN."
May as well listen to Tony or the asshole rev; this guy's acquaintance with the truth has been strained for some time.
"I wonder who was and why THAT person didn't do anything..."
Scott Adams pointed this out today. All the Deep State "Trump is an agent of Putin" propagandists were in charge while Putin supposedly violated our virginal electoral system again and again, and somehow failed to stop Putin.
Both Brennan and Clapper, while under oath, lied to Congress and like Hillary both got a pass from prosecution.
And only now is Fruit Sushi noticing some problems.
#TooDeepStateToJail
If the ocean of criminals in the Obama Administration and their DeepState holdovers are not brought to Justice, America is over.
We'll never have another free and fair election.
Laying this out in an organized fashion.
Top officials from the FBI, CIA, NSA, etc. did their best to not only allege that Trump was a traitor, but to orchestrate a kangaroo court via the FBI to get him removed from office.
Trump, unusual among Presidents has been willing to overrule the intelligence services and de-escalate military actions and resist new ones. When he has done this the intelligence services have immediately leaked what a catastrophe ignoring them would be.
In short, the intelligence services are, perhaps for the first time in my lifetime, not having total success manipulating the President. This is a true testament to Trump, and should will praise from any libertarian.
On a broader basis, I question how many of the decisions Bush and Obama made were the result of manipulation by the intelligence services. Has it been the reality that our Presidents have been figureheads managed by government insiders? Is the resistance to Trump really just a rejection of someone who is harder to manipulate.
Well said.
If Trump's unconventional approach to foreign policy result in new geopolitical realities in different regions, how many of these experts are out of work post government career.
Has it been the reality that our Presidents have been figureheads managed by government insiders?
Yes, Minister.
Top officials from the FBI, CIA, NSA, etc. did their best to not only allege that Trump was a traitor, but to orchestrate a kangaroo court via the FBI to get him removed from office.
You make it sound like they're acting against a sitting President. It should be well understood that there is abundant and clear evidence that this ball started rolling against *candidate* Trump and, in that light and with regard to your other statements regarding manipulation, it's not entirely clear how relevant the 'Trump' part of that statement is.
Bush went to Iraq because Tenet said the evidence of WMD in Iraq was a "slam dunk"...

Your former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, ladies and gentlemen.
Let that sink in.
You make a very good point, Brian. I think either one of us could be a better Director of the CIA.
The Mueller report hasn't been released. I'll wait to decide whether suspicions of Trump were justified and once I see the evidence for myself. I don't trust Barr's interpretation of the "findings". I remember Mueller's mandate and it wasn't limited to a statement on criminal conspiracy. There is evidence or the lack thereof that we need to see to understand the truth of Russian intentions and actions and to understand the basis for judgment calls from Mueller and Barr. There is very solid evidence of Russia contacting Trump officials and offering assistance. There's solid evidence of Trump firing an FBI director becauss he was investigating Russian espionage. The NRA was infiltrated by a Russian agent. These facts are sort of things that presumably Mueller was examining when he was looking for coordination between Trump campaign officials and the Russian govt. I want to see how Mueller examined these suspicious circumstances. It's not asking much to see the Mueller report. But I would be a fool if I believed Trump would ever let that happen.
You are a sad, strange, little man. And you have my pity.
I don't feeling sorry for you. I don't like you.
What EXACTLY would have to be in the report to make you say that you were wrong?
Just curious because I have no reason to believe that if the entire report (which legally cannot be fully released due to grand jury rules) gets released you'd believe anything different than you do now.
""There's solid evidence of Trump firing an FBI director becauss he was investigating Russian espionage. ""
You are failing to mention that the fired FBI director said Trump could fire him for any reason, or no reason. There is no crime when you have the authority to do it.
"There's solid evidence of Trump firing an FBI director because he was investigating Russian espionage."
What a load of crap. Comey wasn't investigating anything. He was running the agency, running it poorly, and was not being forthright with the President. Trump canned him according to Rosenstein's recommendation. Firing Comey had absolutely no bearing on any of the investigations that were being conducted by the FBI.
Amazing to me how politicized the FBI had become under Comey. And his behavior since his termination only confirms it. He had become a political hack, sadly.
Russians infiltrated the NRA, The union is ruined!
Chinese spy drives high ranking member on Senate for years...meh
Of course nobody you know has read anything from the Mueller report.
Two pathetic losers, still hoping mommy lied when she said Santa wasn't real.
It's enjoyable watching the two of you (and the asshole rev along with you) prove how divorced from reality lefty ignoramuses must be.
Oh, and make the world a smarter and better place; go die where you can't stink up the joint.
You're really not good at this. Or probably anything. I wonder if you're even capable of wiping your own asshole.
Please make the world a smarter and better place; go die where you can't stink up the joint.
You like that better, you fucking ignoramus?
It just shows how unhinged you on the left have become that you can't recognize that William Barr is a respected Attorney not subject to corrupting influence from politicians. He's trying to give you a brief synopsis of what's in the report, much of which will be released after being reviewed and redacted for security purposes.
But noooooo ?? that in itself is proof of his "conspiratorial nature." Maybe Barr is a Russian too.
You lefties have become loonier than the John Birchers I knew as a kid! And you folks are a major political party. Get a grip, Tony.
On the other hand, the guy who wrote the Mueller report is out and around and available to correct any misrepresentations of it made by Barr, and hasn't.
Seriously, it's hilarious how the true believers are falling into the trap.
1) Barr releases an accurate summary of the report, getting "Exoneration" headlines.
1a) True believers in the collusion conspiracy dig in deeper, saying that that's just Barr's letter, not the actual report.
2) Barr releases most of the report, minus specific redactions to cover the material that's still before a grand jury, getting "Exoneration" headlines in a second news cycle.
2a) True believers in the collusion conspiracy dig in even deeper, saying that the redacted portions are where the turth lies.
3) When the grand juries close, Barr releases the redacted portions, getting "Exoneration" headlines in a third news cycle.
After all, why dominate just one news cycle when you can milk the report to dominate three?
When someone isn't indicted, tried, convicted, and sentenced to prison, then there is no there there. It's a big nothing burger.
Hillary Clinton fans told me so.
Also, no foul play when a friendly changes the FBI report to protect Hillary from an indictment.
Imagine the outrage if that happened with Mueller's report.
This whole "Russiagate" thing rises to the level of journalistic malpractice. Consequences? None.
Members of the press were either criminally negligent in their pursuit of the facts and critical thinking, or they were actively deceiving the public by pushing a narrative handed to them by the Clinton campaign.
Let the navel-gazing begin.
CNN justified it saying that they are journalists, not investigators.
I was unaware that journalism was just another word for stenography, but there you go.
"or they were actively deceiving the public by pushing a narrative handed to them by the Clinton campaign."
The Cathedral in action.
#MoldbugWasRight
That irony of relying on some terse statement from the new deep state and running with that as the end all be all of things is not lost me. Here you are trusting the word of Barr. And you haven't even seen the Mueller report but you've already decided Barr's statement was enough. Barr thinks any president can corrupt any investigation so long as that president is not the target of said investigation. Thats a hell of a statement and maybe its true but wouldn't you like to know how Barr and Trump have applied that shocking power to order investigations started and stopped on the whim of a President?
The irony...
Trump was 'boring' at infamously wild Studio 54 parties
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyJ6iaghwjk
This was according to the joint's former owner. Mark Fleischman.
But how do we know this? Why take him at his word?
There was a lot of perversions at Studio 54. People were sniffing cocaine, puffing on marijuana, and some even took LSD. And others were fornicating in public.
Now maybe Trump didn't do any of the above, but he was still there and could have reported the lawbreakers but didn't.
He could be an accessory to these crimes.
My suggestion is that Congress look into these matters.
Trump was at Studio 54, did he take part in these perversions?
If not, why didn't he report the perversions to the authorities?
He's guilty of something, that's for sure.
He's not a guy who can let loose. His entire mental capacity is taken up by extreme insecurity over his own perception. He can think of nothing but himself. He's not a partier.
Tony, Oprah is looking for a Dr Phil replacement.
Interested?
If the evangelicals associated with Trump had there way an investigation like that would be possible. You're confused if you think you're defending liberty.
Physician, heal thyself.
Who do you think is trusting the word of Barr as if it's the end all be all? People (including Barr) know the report is going to come out, and that if Barr mischaracterized it, he's going to look like an idiot. People (including Barr) also know that if he mischaracterized it, Mueller can go to CNN and say, "That's not what it says." So smart people look at Barr's statement and assume that it's probably accurate, but allow for the possibility that it's a summary and that there *might* be something in the actual report that's detrimental to someone.

Reporters can semi-redeem themselves by revealing all of their lying un-named sources so that they will be exposed to the sunlight to receive the appropriate attention. Reporters should not feel any duty to maintain source confidentiality after having been used as tools even if it was willingly and happily.
Is their allegiance to liars greater than their allegiance to the public? Scratch that. Just do it, the right thing. -Spike Nike
Bob Barr believes in extensive executive power and urged pardons for Iran-Contra to protect the president. He was picked for a reason, none of them particularly libertarian. Just in case any of you was wondering before you give him the libertarian of the year award for whitewashing Trump, another great supporter of individual freedom and not a nutfuck fascist at all.
*Bill
I think you have something there. But what it is , I'm not sure.
Libertarians are in danger or, or have already succumbed to, becoming overtaken by Trump cultists. Apart from the naked racist fascism of Trumpism itself, he's allied himself with what old-school Republican apparatchiks he can find under rocks to ally themselves with him in common defense of a party that has long held a belief in monarchical executive power (as long as the executive is a Republican) and who have participated in some of the biggest scandals of the 20th and 21st centuries.
But they all do, it must be admitted, support low income tax rates for billionaires.
I think some libertarians enjoy watching Trump fuck with the media elite and the political class.
I know I do.
Govt as tormenter of my political foes. Careful what you wish for.
Do you do the spam posts too?
"Do you do the spam posts too?"
I doubt it; they don't show the range of stupid we get from OP.
"Govt as tormenter of my political foes. Careful what you wish for."
No, you and she lost, loser.
OP, had that for 8 years, 2008-2016.
Lots of hit-n-runpublicans around here, I agree. I wish the political establishment, and all of their sycophants, would fuck off and leave us all alone to manage our own affairs. There is no reason to have a multi trillion dollar fedgov, for starters.
Congrats, I do not think you missed a single Democrat talking point. Sadly everything in your post is BS. I also enjoy how your side is so free throwing around accusations like racist and fascist when you are the actual racists and fascists. I cannot count the number of times in the past three years I have been called by those on your side of the fence - ignorant, redneck white trash... which is racist. In addition, the left is who uses violence to silence speech and the calls it "self defense". Your side are the ones who destroy property and start riots to prevent people you disagree with from speaking again and again. The problem has become so pervasive, the POTUS felt compelled to sign an executive order protecting free speech on college campuses because the 1st amendment was no longer enough. Ironic, Berkley the birthplace of the free speech movement has become the worst offender in the US. If you want to see the true fascists in this country, look in the mirror.
Well stated, TxJack. However, "they know not what they do." They came unhinged when St. Hillary lost on election night. I don't think they're capable of recovering.
I think the socialist vermin has TDS.
I love this claim by Democrats. Yes, the AG is going to put himself at risk for disbarment and even prison to protect the President. Right because there is no possible way Hillary lost the election because she was a terrible candidate who said incredibly stupid things, lied about meaningless issues and clearly was lying about the entire server issue. I love how when no evidence exists, the outcome is a whitewash but when actual evidence of a crime, (mishandling classified info is a federal crime), we are supposed to move on because Hillary was cleared. Seriously? You want to point to a whitewash, that was a whitewash. Hello pot, this is kettle.....

Trump should retaliate against the FBI and issue an executive order that all FBI interviews are recorded.
No more of this we'll take notes and write the 302 up in a couple of days.
I actually agree with this completely. It is inexcusable that the FBI gets away with this bullshit.

Drain the Deep State.
Did you know "gullible" isn't listed in the dictionary?
In addition to Clapper, remember Brennan lied about the CIA hacking the computers of Senate staffers. The truth is the entire narrative was a hoax created to cover up what the Clinton campaign and FBI under Comey actually did. The one question that no one has ever answered is how exactly the President an agent of Russia and a Putin puppet when he imposed the harshest sanctions on Russia and when in Germany was attempting to get them to stop buying Russian oil and by US oil instead to further harm the Russian economy. The Russian foreign minister said publically after the massive air strike in Syria that the actions of the US were an act of war and Russia expelled US diplomats as we expelled Russians. I am confused, with all of these clearly Anti-Russian actions by the administration how exactly is he Putin's puppet? The truth is that claim along with all the others is complete nonsense and nothing more than a red herring to try and prevent the GOP from investigate who was actually involved in collusion and other illegal acts attempting to influence the outcome of the election.
Commie Brennan gonna Commie
Why has no one demanded Swalwell and Schiff produce the evidence they have claimed to have proving collusion? Why has no one asked if they had this evidence, why did they not give it to Mueller? Even more troubling is how so many on the left are upset because there is no evidence the President colluded with Russia to rig the election. So apparently, they prefer he had actually done this and put our entire system in chaos? Seriously? You are so obsessed and blinded by partisan politics that you want the country and our entire government to be compromised? In 2000, Democrats claim Bush won because the SCOTUS handed it to him even though the Constitution mandates the day the electors must be chosen which is the day the SCOTUS stepped in. In 2004, Bush won because of "stolen votes" in Ohio. In 2016, Trump won because of Russian collusion. Anyone see a pattern here? Democrats refuse to accept they simply lost? Democrats simply refuse to accept the reason they lost an election is the policies and vision they were trying to sell was rejected by voters.
It's amusing that "libertarians" like robby would be so dismissive of an unaccountable bureaucracy, aka the deep state, in spite of documented evidence of tampering with FBI investigations, weaponizing the IRS against their opponents, and abusing the FISA court and unmasking to do the same.
But do tell us about how you are super cereal about not taking clapper and brennan seriously and how you kept your head during RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA.
Welcome to wokatarianism.
Of course the deep state is a real phenomenon. Most of the federal employee base hates Trump and wants him out. I know a few of these people. Of COURSE they exist.

"The "deep state" theory?the idea that a shadow government of military and intelligence officials secretly runs the government, or is working to subvert Trump's White House?currently beloved by many conservative activists is excessively conspiratorial."
Reason thinks it's "excessively conspiratorial" to think that people can act in their self and collective interests.
Government of the government, by the government, and for the government is the historical *rule*, not the exception.
An ideological "conspiracy" is required to make government anything *but* that.

Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy states that in any bureaucratic organization there will be two kinds of people:
First, there will be those who are devoted to the goals of the organization. Examples are dedicated classroom teachers in an educational bureaucracy, many of the engineers and launch technicians and scientists at NASA, even some agricultural scientists and advisors in the former Soviet Union collective farming administration.
Secondly, there will be those dedicated to the organization itself. Examples are many of the administrators in the education system, many professors of education, many teachers union officials, much of the NASA headquarters staff, etc.
The Iron Law states that in every case the second group will gain and keep control of the organization. It will write the rules, and control promotions within the organization.
Seriously... How anybody could doubt that government officials MIGHT just be out for their own interests, when this is the historical norm, is beyond belief. It's like being surprised that water is wet or that things fall down instead of up. The level of stupidity that these journalists have is mind blowing.
"Blindly trusting the intelligence community" LOL
All you have to do is look at their records, and you would never trust the intelligence community again if you are a sane person.

I disagree, they seem to be very much protected against politics. Also against prosecution for violating the rights of millions of Americans. When will "We the People" finally say enough. We live amongst too many sheep.
If anybody is guilty of treason, it is people like this. They KNEW Trump didn't collude with Russia. They just hoped they'd find something else to railroad him on. And it was all about politics from the get go. They're globalist shit heels, the lot of them. Them and their ilk are the ones who have been selling out the best interests of the American people for decades. They better hope that by the time a true reckoning comes along they've died of old age, because things will probably get messy for people like this in the future when more people realize how badly they were screwed by the deep state uni-party politicians.
