The U.S. Must Stop Supporting War in Yemen, Says Senate
Plus: a Rand Paul add-on makes sure measure doesn't inadvertently authorize new wars, Dick's stores are dropping guns, campus art controversy, and good 8A news
The Senate yesterday approved a resolution to end U.S. support for bombings and other acts of war in Yemen. With a 54–46 vote, lawmakers said the U.S. must block further military support for Saudi Arabia's and the United Arab Emirates' bombings and other acts of aggression in Yemen.
Congress never authorized the U.S. to enter this conflict. Yet as Mike Lee (R–Utah) said, "We have been supporting and in some case actively participating in this war." He was one of seven Republicans in the Senate who voted for the resolution, which invokes the War Powers Act. (The others were Susan Collins of Maine, Steve Daines of Montana, Jerry Moran of Kansas, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rand Paul of Kentucky, and Todd Young of Indiana.)
"Since March 2015, members of the United States Armed Forces have been introduced into hostilities between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis, including providing to the Saudi-led coalition aerial targeting assistance, intelligence sharing, and mid-flight aerial refueling," the resolution states.
Yet "no specific statutory authorization for the use of United States Armed Forces with respect to the conflict between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis in Yemen has been enacted, and no provision of law explicitly authorizes the provision of targeting assistance or of midair refueling services to warplanes of Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates that are engaged in such conflict."
"Nothing in this joint resolution shall be construed to influence or disrupt any military operations and cooperation with Israel," another section explicitly stipulates.
"Debate on the resolution, as in the past, centered on arguments that the US involvement isn't technically a war in and of itself, and that ending the war would be bad for Israel," writes Jason Ditz at Antiwar.com:
The resolution came with an amendment by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), which seeks to ensure that no language in the bill inadvertently authorizes any other wars. An alternative amendment by Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK), aiming to keep the US involved in the name of saving American civilians from conceivable missile fire, narrowly failed.
This is the second time in a month that Congress has voted on a War Powers Act challenge to the Yemen War, with the House having had such a vote in mid-February. The House will still have to reconcile itself to another vote, however, because Senate leadership prevented debate on the House version and forced war opponents to start with a fresh challenge.
The White House has said President Donald Trump will veto the bill. As of now, it has far from the two-thirds majorities it would require in both houses to overcome the veto.

Dick's Sporting Goods is pulling guns from 125 more stores. "Late last year, the sporting goods retailer stopped selling guns, ammunition and hunting gear at 10 of its 700-plus stores," reports Marketplace. "Now, it's going to do the same at 125 more stores." That's not necessarily a political move. "Dick's hopes replacing that merchandise with experiential things, like baseball batting cages, will combat sluggish store sales," Marketplace says.

sounds like they're hoarding a pretty dangerous stockpile. what do they know that we dont?
Dick's sided with gun grabbers, so they have been losing gun sales.
Their stock has been up and down for 2 years and they are in real trouble as a shitty brick-and-mortar store which is run by SJWs.
"Dick's hopes replacing that merchandise with experiential things, like baseball batting cages, will combat sluggish store sales," Marketplace says.
and if all else fails, they now have the means to force store sales to improve
Get woke go broke. Virtue signaling management doesn't have to care about making money, for those of you who think the cell phone companies won't cut off people for having the 'wrong' beliefs.

There is not a gun at any brick and mortar, big or small, that you cannot buy for substantially less from an online store. Grab A Gun, Sportsman's Outdoor, Smokey Mountain; you can get a pretty good comparison of competitive pricing on a site called Gundeals. And yes, you have the gun sent to an FFL and pass the NICS.
Lawsuit By Sandy Hook Victims Against Gun Manufacturer Allowed To Move Forward
The Lefty gun grabbers have a plan for that. Sue gun manufacturers for manufacturing dangerous guns as they are designed to be. This is CT Supreme Court, so their nonsense will get struck down.
These product liability claims should be laughed out of the courtroom.
The families of the victims of that jihadi jackass in Nice should sue Renault.
This was sarcasm, in case it wasn't obvious.
CNN: The Western concept of family needs to move with the times
Is the nuclear family outmoded? MsAfropolitan blogger Minna Salami explores its flaws and limitations.
As humans, we crave closeness to others, a sense of belonging, of a place to go to when life is challenging. But we are at a point in time when we urgently need to redefine and separate the notion of family from patriarchy and heteronormativity if it is to survive. Only then can we make informed decisions about what an ideal family really is.
This won't be a matter of hiding away the past or repackaging traditional notions of family as empowering "choice feminism."
Freed from the constraints of patriarchy and heteronormativity, family can be so much more than a structure of enforced bonding and bondage. Family can be a safe space absent of social hierarchies and prejudices.
I'm pretty sure the western concept of family (which seems a lot like other cultures' conceptions of family in many ways; do these people think that patriarchy isn't the traditional norm in most other cultures?) does move and change with the times.
These people live in a fantasy world. They have no connection to reality. No one with any connection to reality could think nonWestern cultures and family structures are somehow less patriarchal than Western ones. That is full on weaponized stupid.
These people don't live in a fantasy world - yet. But they intend to. And when you set out to change human nature and rebuild society in your own image, you find a lot of people just refuse to get with the program and - sadly - must be culled from the herd. I'd like to have somebody ask Bernie about the program to create the New Soviet Man or the similar programs Hitler had to remake Germany's society, Mao's to remake China's, Pol Pot's to remake Cambodia, etc., etc., ad nauseum and how his hopeful "fundamental transformation" of America differs from theirs.
Good point Jerry.
Fantasy or whatever, the fact that they seem to believe this can work out strongly implies that their heads are way up in their asses.
1.6 billion Chinese, 1.3 billion Indians, 1 billion Muslims, Russia, Japan, and the entirety of South and Central America to whom family is everything. But yeah, I am sure this experiment is gonna work out fine.
Who are we at war with today? Eurasia or Eastasia?
Not fans of Princess Bride.
"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous of which is 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia,' but only slightly less well-known is this: 'Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line!'"
Anything non Western is an alternative and competitor to the western capitalism that keeps the left from the power they believe they deserve. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
If they destroy western capitalism, the world will have known they were there. They will go down in history with the importance they believe they deserve. They will Matter.
Freed from the constraints of patriarchy and heteronormativity, family can be so much more than a structure of enforced bonding and bondage. Family can be a safe space absent of social hierarchies and prejudices.
Jesus, someone has spent waaay too much time watching "taboo" porn.
As long as heterosexual relations remain the primary way new people are made, then hetero will be nornative.
Yeah, I'm not sure how one can separate 'family' from 'heterosexual' in any meaningful way. Just adopting the leftovers of the heterosexuals isn't really replacing the heteros.

"Congress never authorized the U.S. to enter this conflict."
Just because we don't like what the AUMF says doesn't mean it says something other than what it says.
"(a) IN GENERAL- That the President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001."
AUMF - September 14, 2001
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.....Terrorists
Libertarians opposed this at the time because it gave the president the authority to attack anyone he wants anywhere in the world he wants forever so long as he first decides that they're in any way connected to Al Qaeda. This AUMF has been used by everyone from George W. Bush to Barack Obama to assassinate American citizens and violate the Fourth Amendment rights of 300 million Americans by way of the NSA. It is probably the inspiration for Trump's absurd claims about terrorists infiltrating the immigrant caravan.
The solution to this problem is not to pass a resolution stopping the U.S. from supporting Saudi Arabia in its fight in Yemen. The solution is to repeal or add a sunset clause to the AUMF itself.
The reluctance of legislators to do either of those things is mostly predicated on the same kind of reluctance the Supreme Court exhibits when it fails to overturn ridiculous interpretations of the commerce clause. If the Court did the right thing by way of Gonzales v. Raich and Wickard v. Filburn, it would pull the rug out from under half of the government bureaucracy. Legislators are likewise reluctant to pull the rug out from under half of the military and intelligence services in their fight against terror--which is what repealing the AUMF might do.
We will not overcome congress' reluctance to repeal the AUMF by ignoring what the AUMF says (because we don't like what it says. The problem cannot be solved by ignoring its source. The source of the problem is the AUMF, and the only solutions are to repeal it or sunset it.
P.S. Adding a sunset clause the president's emergency powers declarations is also an excellent idea. Because future presidents could redeclare them doesn't diminish the fact that without a sunset clause, the emergencies never expire.
well Stated Ken of course it will never happen the government never gives up power it has but that doesn't mean we can't try to tilt at those wind mills
This is how you know that they are unserious about curbing the imperial presidency. They're just against this particular emperor, not the fact that they installed an emperor.
That has been pretty much my understanding; that in the wake of 9/11/2001 Congress (in a fit of abject panic that the voters might think they were soft on terrorism) gave the President a blank check.
Suck it up, boyos, you (or your predecessors) authorized the President to do more or less whatever he damn well please, and bleating that you didn't authorize a SPECIFIC action has no basis in law.
Either repeal the original authorization (and deal with the political fallout) or sit down and shut up.
Another lesson that all legislation should have sunset clauses.
Amen. Keep the poles busy worrying about real laws we need to pass (again) and they won't have time to declare war on straws.
But but but 911 changed everything!
Although I am generally a fan of billionaires influencing the political process, I don't like the Mercers.
GOP megadonor Mercer family donated to nonprofit conservative group that focuses on historic values of 'English-speaking peoples'
"English-speaking peoples" is, of course, a racist dogwhistle intended to exclude black and brown bodies. Shame on the Mercers. I wish all billionaires could be as committed to social justice as the Koch Brothers.
But the Alt right's contention Progressives want to exterminate American white people is just a paranoid fantasy.
If progressives did that there would hardly be any progressives left.
^ This. It's a bizarre mental contortion that is required to be both a lilly white person while also claiming to speak for minorities. Because that's what white progressives are really saying: they speak with the authority of a minority while not being one.
Malcolm X specifically spoke about this particular brand of white liberalism, and he didn't think much of it. Not that I'm a big fan of Malcolm X, but it is something to consider.
"black and brown bodies"
Every single person I have ever heard use this term has turned out to be a ridiculously stupid asshole. It is a Shibboleth.
It as not if the English conception of citizens rights and their relationship to the state is not unique in world history. The criticism is not seeingthe forest for the trees.
Senators Say They Didn't Authorize This War in Yemen and the U.S. Must Stop Supporting It
Well, damn, I've been sending a monthly check to the War in Yemen GoFundMe but I guess I'll stop funding the war now. But I do have to wonder, is everybody else going to stop funding the war as well? Is there some other group providing the funds for the US military that could maybe be persuaded to stop providing the funds for a war they don't support?
When they voted for the NDAA that allowed money to be spent on the war in Yemen, they did vote for it. And any claims they didn't are lies.
Well, they really didn't READ that thing, and nobody told them, and, shucks, they didn't mean to....
One of the interesting things is that various groups within Congress might support stopping the funding of the Saudis for different reasons.
There are progressives who don't want to fund the Saudis because the Crown Prince isn't a very nice person.
There are libertarian types who don't want to fund the Saudis because they don't think the U.S. should be involved.
There are neocons who don't want to fund the Saudis because they think the United States should invade directly.
I favor a proxy war through the Saudis to a U.S. invasion of Yemen, and try to be clear that getting the Saudis out of the way may be a precursor to such an invasion.
I'd also point out that congress is the proper place to have this debate. Do the Iran supported terrorists in Yemen pose a threat to the United States, and is funding the Saudis fight against them in our best interests? The answer could be "yes".
One of the interesting things
Is it really interesting?
You suck.
I try.
That's why it's so sad.
More pertinent is the question of whether American defense companies should be free to sell military hardware to the Saudis, which seems to come up in this debate all the time. It's important to read the stories under these headlines because I've seen it happen before, where the Saudis purchasing hardware from American defense companies is somehow considered "support" for the Saudis--not because any taxpayer money is involved but because approving those sales requires the approval from the Secretary of State. I think enough of our interests are at stake in Yemen and the Saudis are fighting enough of our self-described Iranian-backed enemies that Congress shouldn't get in the way of such "support"--certainly not when there isn't any U.S. taxpayer money exchanging hands.
If Google can sell surveillance software to China, other companies can sell hardware to damn near anyone.
"Dick's hopes replacing that merchandise with experiential things, like baseball batting cages, will combat sluggish store sales"
Specialty retailers are getting crushed by competitors like Amazon and Wal*Mart, and that competition is coming from their big investments in online retail. And more and more people are buying Nike products directly from Nike. Dick's is also making a big push online, suggesting that Dick's knows that if it has a future, its future is online.
Gun sales online are tricky. Dick's can't ship the firearm directly to the consumer anyway. Looks more like they're putting lipstick on a pig. They're probably hedging their bets on their brick and mortar product mix anyway.

"BEIJING?China made last-minute changes to a proposed foreign-investment law, trying to address U.S. complaints about forced technology transfer and bolster a compromise seen as crucial to striking a trade deal with Washington.
In the past week, the national legislature quietly amended a draft of the law to tighten up channels used to leak intellectual property. The draft, which is expected to be passed into law Friday, adds language to bar officials from divulging corporate secrets and threatens criminal prosecution for doing so . . . .
The new language takes aim at the regulatory review panels, known as "conformity assessments," that foreign companies must pass before manufacturing new cars and other products or setting up plants. The Trump administration says the process is used to leach proprietary information and force technology transfers.
http://www.wsj.com/articles/ch.....552566137?
This is a big victory for the United States and for Trump.
I see the progressives breaking into three groups in their reactions to this.
1) Those who want Mueller to expand his probe to include the Chinese.
2) Those who want Pelosi to bring a bill to floor requiring American companies to transfer their technology to China in spite.
3) Those who want both of the above.
4) Those who stamp their feet and hold their breath.
What I find fascinating is that most people don't care one iota about the fact that we are providing a communist country with decades worth of technological progress essentially for free. It seems the biggest mistake the USSR made was not just asking us for our technology and offering to build it for us. If they had, they might have won the cold war.
