Woman Who Got in the Wrong Uber Thought She Was Being Sex-Trafficked. She Wasn't.
And yet her fear-mongering Facebook post about the ordeal was shared half a million times.

A woman leaving the Tampa Internartional Airport on Monday got into the wrong Uber. For some reason, she thought she was being kidnapped and sold into sex slavery.
She wasn't.
Later, the woman penned this harrowing Facebook post about the incident, which has been shared half a million times. She wrote:
Last night I was picked up by an Uber. Same car, female driver. I MADE A MISTAKE. I got in before checking, as she opened the back door for me from her seat. She drove erratically and didn't speak. About 10 minutes in, my actual Uber called me asking where I was. My voice cracked, because in that instant I knew. "A car… I think I need help." She told me not to hang up and to get out of the car however I possibly could. The lady refused to stop or respond to me. I told her she was driving by my friends (random girls I saw) and they would call the cops. She slowed a little, pointing at her phone saying "Uber. I take you back then." I said, no here is fine. She kept going. I booked it out the door, car still moving. She sped off.
I later was told by numerous people she is a sex traffic worker. They use women to lure people in, and possibly hang out in the Uber lot to steal rides of similar looking cars. The cops didn't come, but my real Uber driver did Cristin Cinquino, and hugged me, kept me safe, and cried with me. Always, always check your Uber. I'm lucky.
Actually, she was unlucky. She got in the wrong Uber and it proceeded to take her in the wrong direction. But as the Orlando Sentinel soon reported:
Tampa police, however, say it was all a misunderstanding. Hurley's ride wasn't a kidnapping situation, and the driver wasn't a sex-trafficking victim, police said.
Instead, Tampa police spokesman Eddy Durkin said, the woman was just another Uber driver with a similar car, whose primary language is Spanish and who doesn't speak much English, leading to the confusion.
"The person that posted it got into the wrong car and there was a language barrier," Durkin told the Orlando Sentinel on Wednesday. "It's as simple as that. This had nothing to do with sex trafficking."
The police checked out the story with everyone involved and consider the case closed.
But why did this woman immediately assume she was being sex-trafficked—and why did half a million people gullibly share her story?
The answer to the first is because sex trafficking is a moral panic. It has become a go-to eyeball-getter in the media, where it is portrayed Taken-style: Some random stranger grabs a random young person and sells them at the equivalent of a Sotheby's auction.
This is nonsense. As Beth Boggess, FBI supervisory special agent who heads Colorado's violent crimes against children unit, explained to KUSA TV:
…human traffickers tend to lure vulnerable teens over time. "It's a completely different crime," Boggess said. "We don't see kidnapping for human trafficking."
But if sex traffickers aren't kidnapping people right and left, why does a Facebook post like this one get shared so much?
I think there's two things going on, besides a mistaken perception of the magnitude of this crime. Firt, people love to be helpful. If all it takes to save a life is to press "share," who wouldn't? Second, people love to be at the center of excitement. If, by sharing this post, we are playing a small role in this thrillingly heinous story, well, it's better than no walk-on part at all.
The problem is that sharing this post does not spread helpful advice. It spreads unnecessary fear.
Instead, consider sharing this very post, or this one, or any of Elizabeth Nolan Brown's articles on the subject.
Headline: Woman Not Sex-Trafficked by Uber Driver, Everything Is Fine. Pass it on.

Turns out the original Uber driver was the sex trafficker. Thus the hugging.
Ooh, I love the chilling twist ending! It's like the Killer in the Backseat!

Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail.

Media panics have no effect on the public's perception of things.
Occam's Razor has been banned in many cities, since it could be construed as a dangerous weapon. [Cf. Sadiq Khan.]
Reminds me of a time when every candied apple had razor blades in them and lick-n-stick decals were all LSD laced. Amazing I survived the 70s.
Between those razor-laced apples and the Olivia Newton-John poster in my bedroom, it's a wonder I have a tongue left at all.
Dear Cosmo,
I recently went to Tampa on a business trip. Anyway, I got to the airport and took an Uber and I still can't believe what happened next...
Yeah, I'm interested in hearing more about this sex trafficking ring that uses women to lure in other women...
I think you can see some documentaries of that on Youporn or cinimax after ten eastern.
That's why I live in Pacific Time, so I don't have to stay up so late.
Wasn't there some cult with a girl from a tv show once never heard of doing that not too long ago?
I'm more interested in this ring that kidnaps women, rapes them, and sends them out to meet the public and attract more rapists.
So she was willing to describe a total stranger as a sex trafficker? On what basis? And why wasn't she able to convince others of the truth of her story? Is the cover-up that deep?
/sarc
She's a trump supporter who thinks all Mexicans are rapists.
She's a Hillary supporter who knows all Democrats are rapists.
She's a Jussie imitator looking for her 15 minutes of fame.
Trumptards say that's alright: "You see, Mexican Isn't a race - we hate Mexicans so we're not racist!"
TDS. Go to Urgent Care; they have vaccines for that now.
WOMAN: "Please don't traffic me! I don't want to be a sex slave to some sweaty sheikh!"
McDONALD'S EMPLOYEE: "No sheikh here, ma'am, just Big Macs. You want fries with that?"
WOMAN: "Well, I escaped by the skin of my teeth this time...maybe I should try the Burger King, they look disreputable enough."
NOTE: The characters and businesses in this sketch are either fictitious or used fictitiously. No resemblance to reality is intended or should be inferred.
It reads like a Tick comic.
So basic monolingual bitch jumps to conclusions, makes fool of self, is probably actually racist.
I don't think she is racist. I think she just really needs to get laid and was engaged in a bit of wish fulfillment here.
She gave the driver a "ocualr patdown" and determined she was being kidnapped. My guess is the driver's appearance and or race helped fuel her fever dream.
So reads this former Boston cabbie who, notwithstanding his screaming gut, picked up three Afro-Americans who wanted to go to a particular Roxbury address and subsequently committed armed robbery after they had instructed me to go in a different direction after seeing two cruisers outside of the apartment building they initially gave as their destination.
Do you know how many people told me how stupid I was for a smart guy?
You are obligated to to that as a taxi driver. So no judgement here.
basic monolingual bitch
The Uber driver?
She made a fool of herself?
No, that was you with that response.
"She slowed a little, pointing at her phone saying "Uber. I take you back then." "
ENGLISH MOTHERFUCKER! DO YOU RECOGNIZE IT WHEN SOMEONE WRITES AN ARTICLE SAYING SOMEONE IS SPEAKING IT?!?!?!

"multi pass!"
If every time I went to another country, including Tampa, and got in a car with someone who didn't speak my language, and I immediately assumed I was getting sex trafficked, I wouldn't make it much beyond the airport. In which case, why travel at all?
To get the free genital massages from the US Government?
If every time I went to another country, including Tampa, and got in a car with someone who didn't speak my language, and I immediately assumed I was getting sex trafficked, I wouldn't make it much beyond the airport. In which case, why travel at all?
She was in the USA. She can be monolingual. Fuck people who immigrate to any country and refuse to learn the language.
Not the point Captain Defensive.
Captain Defensive was my secret fraternity name in college.
Was the Rho Omicron Omicron Rho?
TBH I really don't care if she only speaks english. It's just something to bang on her with.
That said, her account IMMEDIATELY made me think "language barrier." She thought "kidnapping" and she's an idiot, so I figured I'd pile on her for being ethnocentric and ignorant.
I think the whole thing was a case of confirmation bias due to her overly active immagination and lack of sex. She saw it as a sex trafficking scam because at heart she kinda hoped it was.
Very likely yes.
My thoughts exactly, This woman needs to get laid.
I don't know that confirmation bias relates to this, but this woman clearly believes she's "hot" enough to be marketable by a sex trafficking ring. To publish this without owning up to her own stupidity (getting in the wrong Uber - they send you a photo of the driver when you confirm) tells me that she's also a bit narcissistic. I'm guessing that she's the kind of person who, when a male holds the elevator door open for her to board, she assumes he wants to hook up with her.
Where are the pics of this chick? Preferably in swimwear. There's no context to this story without them.
I want to see where she falls on the AOC - Tulsi Gabbard continuum and judge her appearance along with the rest of the Reason commentariate.
That was my thought too. Though I imagined her saying "Uber. I take you back." with a Russian accent.
That means doggy style in pidgin Russian.
"Captain Defensive was my secret fraternity name in college."
I would have guessed it was Conservative Cockgobbler.
Your sexual fantasies about me have nothing to do with this Hihn. You crazy bastard.
"She" being the monolingual driver or the passenger? They both have a right to speak any language they want since we don't have a national language.
And have you tried learning a new language as an adult? At least to the point where you're functional in it? Six months for me in a new country that includes intensive language lessons paid for by my employer and I still can't have a basic conversation in complete sentences and I speak two other languages besides English.
no she's a fat bitch but still has fantasies that someone some where may want her. I have a relative like her but she's not fat just plain crazy
Arabs like them fat.
is probably actually racist"
Please tell us all about how Hispanophones are a race.
Is it a race like Mexicans or Canadians? or is it a race like la Francophonie?
"She wasn't."
Damn chiggers, always ruining the narrative.
But why did this woman immediately assume she was being sex-trafficked?and why did half a million people gullibly share her story?
Are we sure people weren't sharing it to laugh at how stupid this woman was?
No. Grrlpower girl's gotta stick together and believe the victim.
That panicky chick is from Vermont! Bwahaha!
"Everywhere I looked I saw gold-toothed, Mexican-looking guys staring at me. Leering. I caught a glimpse of who I'm sure was Scarface! I've seen creeps like this on Netflix - hairy, gross drug-dealers. The sound of steel drums beating is literally DRIVING ME TO MADNESS!"
It is well-known that the Lyft drivers are the ones who sell you into sex slavery, Uber drivers only offer you a roofied drink and then harvest your organs.
...the woman was just another Uber driver with a similar car, whose primary language is Spanish and who doesn't speak much English, leading to the confusion.
So the president is right. They are sending sex traffickers across the border. I KNEW IT.
I cannot help but think a lot of this could have been avoided if only we required immigrants to learn and be somewhat proficient in English, especially a person in the service industry. I welcome all immigrants and hope they can find their American Dream, but please, please, please, at least try to assimilate into our society, I essentially made this same comment earlier in the week in the article about the two women speaking Spanish in the convenience store in Montana. They would have been fine and gone about their business if it were not for speaking their "native tongue".
Uber has Spanish options for Spanish speakers. She may have been there to pick up somebody who specifically requested the service.
That doesn't negate the need to speak English in a primarily English speaking country. Every time I've taken Ubers (three of them, in DC) I get in, they ask "this is the address" and I say yup. One guy asked me for directions and I kind of wanted my money back...
Another myopic Contard heard from.
How does it feel, being a monolingual fuckwit?
You are definitely wrong. Our protagonist would have realized she was in the wrong uber and a smooth-talking, English speaking uber driver would have just been evidence of sophisticated human trafficking vs. Ethnically authentic human trafficking. It isn't the driver's fault this lady jumped into someone else's car.
I imagine it takes a remarkable level of proficiency to deduce that the passenger randomly babbling about wanting to get out now (when they booked to go somewhere else) is under the mistaken impression that she's been kidnapped. And without knowing how long the driver had been living in the USA it's hard to judge whether she's had enough time to learn the language yet.
"But why did this woman immediately assume she was being sex-trafficked?and why did half a million people gullibly share her story?"
Being a victim is empowering. And half a million views really feeds the inner attention whore.
So she was ... trafficking herself?
No. She saw the opportunity to be a victim and grabbed it.
Facebook, home of attention whores since 2009...
Or maybe it's because politicians and the media have been scaring us for generations about how dangerous the world that we've become skittish rabbits?
Or both.
Ha! I read that as "skittish rabbis." Funny thing is, now that I think of it, every rabbi I've ever met was cool as a cucumber.
...where it is portrayed Taken-style: Some random stranger grabs a random young person and sells them at the equivalent of a Sotheby's auction.
MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT
Just kidding. If you haven't already seen the third greatest movie of all times then you deserve to get it spoilered.
the third greatest movie of all times
I don't recall a scene like that in Howard The Duck.
Wasn't that the first Marvel movie?
There's no need to associate Lea Thompson with Marvel.
Lea Thompson in All the Right Moves. Damn.
That's a wild coincidence. On Monday, a woman got into my car thinking she wasn't being sex trafficked.
"But why did this woman immediately assume she was being sex-trafficked?and why did half a million people gullibly share her story?"
Oh, oh! Pick me! I can answer that one!
Blasey-Ford?
If Blasey Ford is the best you can do for your sex trafficing ring, you need to get a day job.
more the false-flag angle. Swetnick could be hot w/some effort
Swetnick was cute. My wife used to work for the girls school that both of them went to. Judging from my wife's impressions of the school, it is more believable they raped Kavanaugh.
80s parties were fun. loved that crowd then.
They were. I hate the way modern feminists act like no woman ever initiated sex or was ever the cause of trouble.
Other than Sarah Palin and family.
If Blasey Ford is the best you can do for your sex trafficing ring, you need to get a day job.
They sent the Senorita Nospeaka to pick her up, they clearly weren't looking to pick up any top-shelf merchandise.
What's with the right-hand drive stock photo use, Reason? I thought this was 'Merica?
It's a reflection.
Did they ever catch the Uber driver who tried to kidnap that law professor?
I never use ride-sharing services like Uber. That sort of thing should be illegal. I always use a marked cab, driven by a trained, professional, skilled, courteous driver. And did you know that Uber only pays drivers 37 cents an hour?
/Anti-Uber taxi shill that always shows up in threads like these
I think they are very overrated. They are only cheaper than cabs if you use them at strange hours. During peak hours they are more expensive. And the drivers are even more likely to be lunatics than cab drivers.
There is nothing wrong with the services. It is free market and all that. But only hipster urban doofuses think they are some giant leap forward for mankind.
Not a great leap forward, but more capitalistic than the cab cartels (what isn't), pricing flexible to demand, and lets people work at their will.
The interesting thing about the cab cartels is that they can't charge peak pricing the way uber can. So, if you ride during off peake hours you are paying the same price and effectively subsidizing those who ride during peak hours.
Reason is forever claiming that uber helps poor people. It doesn't. First, poor people generally can't afford cabs. Second, when they do take a cab it is because they have to for some reason and that is usually during peak times because they have to get to a doctor's appointment or something important that can't wait for the bus. Who uses cabs during off peak times? Mostly younger people who are going out and doing things at night and wealthier people who take cabs as a matter of course. So getting rid of the old cab cartel gets rid of the subsidy that younger and more well off people had been paying so that poor people could use cabs during peak times at cheaper rates.
That doesn't make the cab cartels okay. But, Reason is lying to itself if they think uber is helping poor people. It is as a general rule not. It is helping well off young city dwellers like the reason staff at the expense of the poor.
I always took it as Uber lets poor brown people serve whitey at lower pay more in line with market demands, but I suppose Reason probably isn't advocating that stance either. At least not wittingly anyway.
Driving a cab has always been an entry level job that new immigrants could get. All you need is a license and the willingness to show up. You can't drive for Uber unless you have not just a car but a new nice car. So, poor people need not apply.
Pretty much every aspect of Uber is elitiest. It is no wonder the reason staff are so obsessed with how great it is.
Except those damn medallions that cost $250k and up in the big cities...
Jeezus fuck you're insufferable, John.
Did your Strawman Manufacturing Concern at least make you rich, also?
Jesus fuck you are an idiot. Showing up on a dead thread to troll. You are pathetic.
False.
60% of my Uber passengers (and 100% of Lyft) are going to and/or from the projects.
Having lived in some pretty poor areas of Houston, I would assume most of taxi business is from the lower end of the economic ladder. They don't have cars but they still have to buy groceries (lines of cabs are waiting outside Fiestas grocery store at the beginning of the month) and get places like drs. appointments on time.
I have been to Europe several times on business recently and Uber was essential. Italy has sporadic and difficult to coordinate public transit, uber was cheap and easy to summon. Especially Rome.
Last month I was at El Prat and only found out the taxi drivers were striking when I landed. To get to my hotel meant two (three?) Transfers, bus to train, etc. In the rain. Or a 10 Euro Uber ride.
Got out of Kingsday 2016 in Den Bosch, and grabbed an Uber to Amsterdam, while the lines for the trains were enormous.
Uber has its uses. I used public transport a lot as well, but in very specific situations they are awesome.
Not saying it doens't. But, people managed to get around even in Italy before it. Reason acts like it is some civilization changing development. That is what I find annoying.
If you're not using it, it's not. If you travel and are using it, it is.
Pure garbage.
^^^Anti-Uber taxi shill that always shows up in threads like these^^^
Like I said.
True story- I got into a cab one night with my young daughters. My husband was in law school and we only had one car so I was taking a bus home from somewhere. It was raining and instead of waiting for the bus in the dark in the rain in a really bad part of town, I called for a cab. The cab driver must have thought I was from that part of town and offered to buy my daughters. It wasn't a joke. My feeling is that he had made that proposition before and been successful.
Later my husband worked for CPS and it became apparent that, yes, parents who are drug addicts, prostitutes or in other desperate circumstances do sometimes sell their kids or at least rent them to people who want to use them for sex. It's a sick wold, unfortunately, but none of these low-lifes are going to run into Target to steal a kid out of a cart in a public place. It's much easier to give some addict in the back of a cab $40 for their kid. And they're not going to kidnap a WASPy upper-middle class woman from the airport either. Life is hard enough without having to deal with one of those.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....e3c97ceb42
Was it over when the Confederates bombed Pearl Harbor? The best part about this story is that the statue is of a man wearing a World War II uniform. Generation Retard can't even get iconoclasm right.
You can find that sort of stupidity in any generation. E.g., Rathergate: Nitwits who were probably 1 generation younger than those hooligans printed forgeries on a laser printer with the default Microsoft Word settings, and thought that a little mistreatment of the paper plus photocopying would be sufficient to disguise then as typewritten memos. And then the whole 60 Minutes staff accepted them - even Dan Rather, who began his career working with typewritten news copy, and should have damned well remembered that typewriters never produced text like that.
Facebook is full of crap like this; stories about how some "creepy" guy was looking at the writer in WalMart. Nothing ever really happens, but there you are...the writer was creeped out, so that proves that he was a sex trafficker!
Men are supposed to magically know if a woman likes them and can tolerate the man even looking at them. Didn't you know that?
But why did this woman immediately assume she was being sex-trafficked
Abductive reasoning
Meh. Attention-whore creates FB post that gets shared a million times.
How is this different from urban legends that people have been sharing via email for 20 years.
Or chain letters that used to get photocopied and sent around.
It's faster and gets repeated credulously in mainstream press.
So, are there any actual cases in the US of people being abducted like this woman imagined and sex-trafficked, or is it entirely in people's fevered imaginations?
Probably happens about as often as children being abducted and blood-sacrificed in the 80s. Which is to say, zero times.
If so it can't be common. Not the least for the reason that they can get people to willingly be whores. Random kidnapping is a pretty serious tasks. Why would they do it if they don't have to.
Part of it almost strikes me as vanity. They're attractive enough that of course they're the target of kidnappers.
There are enough desperate women in this world to meet the basic sex trafficer's needs. No reason to create a huge headache for yourself and kidnap a whiny, middle-class, white woman who probably doesn't like sex much anyway.
But its just so darn EXCITING to be a victim of a buzz-crime!
I explicitly ride in Ubers to get people to sex traffic me, and yet no takers yet. Why is fate so cruel?
At some point you have to wonder if adults today are familiar with the idea that the simplest explanation and the most mundane one) is usually the correct answer.
That applies beyond just thinking an Uber not heading in the direction you expect is more likely to be a miscommunication than a plot out of a sequel to Taken.
That tanned and bearded guy at Home Depot buying nails? He's more likely a construction guy than a terrorist buying shrapnel materials for a homemade explosive.
That bright light shining down on you as you drive along a darkened road? Considerably more likely to be a helicopter with a search light than the tractor beam of a UFO with aliens who want to probe you.
That yellow Camaro coming up behind you fast? Most likely it's not a Transformer, sorry.
The thing is, there was a time when people feared ridicule from their peers for immediately jumping to the most outlandish conclusion about anything out of the ordinary. What happened to that?

Social media and wanting to be part of the group.
"So I got into this Uber car, since I had to get to my boring appointment in a remote city. I was about to catch forty winks when suddenly the driver stopped, locked all the doors, and drove me to a secret air hanger. Then a bunch of henchmen hustled me into a plane and flew me to Kathmandu where some warlord who had fallen in love with my Facebook profile took me as his concubine. He had me on the carpet, on the couch, on the back of his elephant...and was about to take me right there in the throne room when the stupid driver woke me up and I had to go to my boring appointment after all."
Just for the record; The kidnapping in Taken was by a career criminal, not a 'random stranger', and was a carefully vetted stupid tourist, not a 'random young person'.
Please, I was out getting pop corn when the technical plot details were being revealed.
This puts me in mind of a guy I read about shortly after 9/11, during that anthrax letter scare.
He was on a commuter flight that had a snack service. He ordered a powdered sugar doughnut, and a powdered sugar doughnut was delivered to him by the flight attendant. Upon discovering that his powdered sugar doughnut was in fact covered in a fine white powder, he immediately panicked and started screaming.
The flight had to turn back to the airport, to get him to stop screaming. Subsequent testing of his powdered sugar doughnut revealed that the 'suspicious' white powder on his doughnut was in fact powdered sugar.
Substitute anthrax with human trafficking, and we seem to have the same sort of idiot, the same sort of panic, and the same sort of gullible readers taking it as a serious threat rather than a person losing their mind for no reason.
