Chicago Police Now Consider Jussie Smollett a Suspect

CPD: "Jussie Smollett is now officially classified as a suspect in a criminal investigation."

It's official: Jussie Smollett is no longer considered a victim, but rather, a suspect.

Authorities now believe the Empire actor filed a false police report when he claimed that two men attacked him and shouted "MAGA country" while he was out for a late-night walk.

"Jussie Smollett is now officially classified as a suspect in a criminal investigation by #ChicagoPolice for filing a false police report (Class 4 felony)," said police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi in a tweet.

This statement confirms earlier news reports that two men questioned about the attack—brothers Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, who were extras on Smollett's show and knew him personally—were purportedly hired by Smollett to carry out the hoax attack.

Police detectives are currently presenting their evidence against Smollett to a grand jury, according to ABC News.

Update: Jussie Smollett has been charged with felony disorderly conduct.

So I watched the coverage of this story on the network news.... ABC and NBC.

I happened to watch the same networks in their initial coverage. They not only reported that Smollette had been attacked by two white men in MAGA hats shouting "This is MAGA Country" with complete credulity, they went on over the next 72 hours to explore "what this means" about America, Trump and Trump supporters. It was their featured editorial go-to and theme for the news.

So anyway, back to today. They ... cautiously... reported that it looks like police think he did it himself. And they proceeded to delve a bit further into the details - mentioning that he may have paid the brothers to stage the attack. They even asked what he thought he'd get out of faking it... if this is true. To that they answered that he was upset about getting the threatening letter and that nobody seemed to take it seriously enough. So that's why he needed to fake the attack.... And then they hinted that they may be looking into the letter having been sent by Smollette.

In other words, they were at least 4 days behind in their reporting. They didn't even have the reports that the brothers are the ones who are talking. They asked "what does this mean for Smollette", and opined that it wouldn't be a big deal if there wasn't a lot of political attention on the case. But it still is just a misdemeanor (that was ABC).

Interestingly, there was no discussion of "what this means for the progressive left, the democrat party, DNC presidential candidates who were quick to exploit this fake attack... etc."
