Will Donald Trump Be Impeached Over a Hotel? Reason Roundup

BuzzFeed report says president personally told Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about Trump Tower Moscow project.

Insert the "It's Happening" gif here, folks. Maybe. A story dropped by BuzzFeed last night about President Donald Trump's directives to Michael Cohen has the internet and airwaves ablaze with talk of imminent impeachment.

As always, such talk should come with about a hundred caveats, but caution and prudence aren't this era's strong suits.

Whatever political stakes may come, however, perhaps the most truly profound part of this story is how mundane Trump's motives reportedly were. His alleged dealings with Vladimir Putin's people and, later, alleged orders for Cohen to lie to Congress about it come down to securing the right to build a Trump skyscraper in Moscow, Buzzfeed's sources say.

For all the cries of collusion, treason, and kompromat; all the speculating about sinister political motives; all the high hysteria we've been subjected to from Democrats, cable news, and supposedly serious thinkers…well, here we are: Trump wanted Trump Tower Moscow. He had long wanted to build a hotel there, and when progress on that front finally started happening he wasn't going to give it up just because he was running for president—a bid that at that point Trump and his campaign did not actually expect him to win.

Doesn't matter what Buzzfeed alleges about Trump: impeachment is a political act, as is the decision to convict and remove from office. It is not automatic. Either roughly 20 Republican senators flip to vote with the Democrats or Trump isn't going anywhere.

— Damon Linker (@DamonLinker) January 18, 2019

The "Moscow Project" has been public for a while, thanks to Cohen's prosecution for lying about it. (Cohen claimed that work securing Russian authorities' approval for the hotel ended in January 2016, though it continued at least through that June.) BuzzFeed's biggest new reveal is that Trump personally told Cohen that he should lie about it to Congress, according "to two federal law enforcement officials involved in an investigation of the matter."

BuzzFeed also reports that, contrary to his debate claims, Trump was directly egging on the hotel deal during part of his campaign, and that the Trump children were much more involved in the hotel project than they have let on.

Why did people have to go with this fantastical version of Trump where he's a secret double agent with sinister America-subverting motives and not just the reality which is he's a big dumb crook who'll do big dumb crimes with anyone anywhere if he thinks there's money in it

— Molly (@dignified_n_old) January 18, 2019

To quote Reason's Scott Shackford, "despite all the crazy conspiracy theorizing, everything that's coming out about Trump is very, very Occam's Razor simplest explanation." Trump likes shiny towers with his name on them, he blurts things out, and he expects everyone around him to cover for him when these things aren't true.

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani's response to the new allegations: "If you believe Cohen I can get you a great deal on the Brooklyn Bridge."

Rudy is actually not joking. He has believed he owns the Brooklyn Bridge for several months. Mostly folks humor him. "That's a fine bridge, all right" they say. "And no, you never said anything about the campaign colluding."https://t.co/lKnWi5MMZT

QUICK HITS

  • The Chicago police officers who helped cover up the killing of Laquan McDonald were acquitted.
  • Rep. Justin Amash calls out Trump's attorney general nominee for his stance on FISA:

While many GOP politicians and pundits feign outrage over FISA (there were few who objected as Congress recently reauthorized the worst parts of FISA), @POTUS's own nominee for attorney general, William Barr, wishes FISA were even more awful: https://t.co/juimpQTgKy

— Justin Amash (@justinamash) January 17, 2019

  • "Many in Congress do not appear to understand how Section 230 works, what it protects, or the potential damage that carving out too many exemptions could do."
  • This is the song that never ends…

Facebook/Twitter content-moderation loop:
(1) Demand for better moderation.
(2) Companies respond by censoring inconsistently.
(3) Complaints about lack of moderation or inconsistent moderation.
(4) Presumption that the companies could do more and better.
(5) GOTO (1).

      2. Gaear Grimsrud   6 years ago

A president can be impeached for anything. It is a political process that only requires the ill defined "high crimes and misdemeanors" which can be anything congress decides it is. If the house decides orange hair is a high crime they have the constitutional authority to impeach the motherfucker. They could impeach Kavanaugh for groping a high school girl at an unspecified location on an unspecified date at an unspecified time. The courts have no jurisdiction in the process and cannot overturn articles of impeachment. It is not a legal matter. The only constitutional restraint on removal from office after impeachment in the house is a two thirds vote for conviction in the senate. That is also a political process.

      This morning's paper:
"Mueller disputes accuracy of report on Trump, Cohen", Associated Press, 19 Jan 2018.

Mueller's office is saying that Buzzfeed's description of statements by that office and of documents and testimony obtained by that office, "are not accurate".

If I made an edit at Wikipedia citing Buzzfeed (or even Buzzfeed News) as a source, I would expect it to be reverted with comment "reliable source needed".

Despite Buzzfeed's entrance into serious journalism, a 2014 Pew Research Center survey found that in the United States, BuzzFeed was viewed as an unreliable source by the majority of respondents, regardless of age or political affiliation.[12]

Not surprised. Democrats wanted a federal investigation based on the 26 Sep 2018 "Julie Swetnick" Declaration from Michael Avenatti that Julie Swetnick did not follow in her 1 Oct NBC interview. And the 2 Oct Declaration by an unnamed declarant from Avenatti was disputed by the unnamed declarant in multiple communications to NBC.

Least Masculine Society In Human History Decides Masculinity Is A Growing Threat

    1. Longtorso, Johnny   6 years ago

      We Need To Retoxify Masculinity
It's a War on Testosterone, and we're culturally surrounded. But that's awesome. As Toxic Male Icon and Army hero, General Anthony McAuliffe of the 101st Airborne put it at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, "Men, we are surrounded by the enemy. We have the greatest opportunity ever presented an army. We can attack in any direction." And Marine legend and Toxic Male "Chesty" Puller said something similar: "We're surrounded. That simplifies our problem of getting to these people and killing them." By the way, General Anthony McAuliffe, when the krauts demanded he surrender, responded, aptly, "Nuts!"

      1. Earth Skeptic   6 years ago

Yeah, but in our new progressive era, Mrs. McAuliffe keeps the nuts in her purse. Oops, I mean Ms. McAuliffe keeps the nuts in her totally ambiguous shoulder bag.

An expanding group of American professionals is building support for a January 26 protest against the outsourcing of middle-class jobs via the H-1B visa program.
The Protect U.S. Workers group has scheduled the protest in Connecticut, where the state's governor is providing a subsidy to an Indian company which uses H-1B visa-workers to outsource U.S. middle-class jobs back into low-wage India.

Nationwide, the H-1B program keeps roughly 650,000 temporary foreign workers in a wide variety of technology, medical, business, and education jobs. Roughly 70 percent of the H-1B visa-workers are recruited in India, where many people will work at low wages in the hope of getting a green card via the H-1B program. The H-1B program is one of many visa plans which lowers salaries for a vast swath of American college-grads by keeping roughly 1.5 million foreign graduates in U.S.-based jobs.

    Appropriate:

"DC media's anti-Trump addiction amps up public outrage"
    [...]
"A virulent distemper has seized the country, segregating many of its people into rigid, contentious camps unwilling to listen to each other.
A major reason for this destructive development, I reluctantly believe, is the sad state of American political journalism.
    [...]
Alas, much of today's political journalism has fallen into advocacy, intentionally inflammatory, using or omitting selective details, quotes and background to make a case against President Trump.
    [...]
And then in a kind of staged Kabuki dance, journalists run to gather reaction from opponents who provide a predictably outraged quote calling for counteraction.
    [...]
Trump was legitimately elected by fellow citizens, often angry, frustrated folks, many of whom peacefully endured eight long years of the previous president they often disagreed with.
The Washington media rightly claim the duty to check presidential statements. Unfortunately, they couldn't find the time or inclination to apply the same regimen to President Barack Obama's words as they have imposed on Trump's."

Johnson was impeached for violating the Tenure in Office Act among other things. He was the Democrat VP of Abe Lincoln and the Republican Congress was not happy with his actions against the newly establish federal rights of Black Americans. So fuck him.

The full House of Representatives passed (eleven articles of impeachment. In the Senate, the vote fell short of the 2/3 majority that was required to convict Johnson and remove him from office.)
RESOLVED, That Andrew Johnson, President of the United States. . . .
Article One: . . . did unconstitutionally [without the advice and consent of the Senate, as required in the 1867 Tenure of Office Act] issue an order removing Secretary Edwin M. Stanton from his position as the head of the Department of War. . . .
Article Four: . . . did unlawfully attempt to intimidate the Secretary for the Department of War [to cause his resignation from the post]. . . .
Articles Five, Six and Seven: . . . did unlawfully conspire with another government official to prevent the execution of the Tenure of Office Act and An Act to Define and Punish Certain Conspirators. . . .
Article Ten: . . . did, designing and intending to set aside the rightful authorities of Congress, attempt to bring into ridicule, disgrace, hatred, and contempt the United States Congress...by saying things such as..."We have seen a Congress in a minority assume to exercise power which, if allowed to be consummated, would result in despotism or monarchy itself. . . . "

        1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

Article Eleven: . . . did, in disregard to the Constitution, declare in a public speech that the Thirty-Ninth Congress of the United States was not a valid Congress for all of the people in the United States . . . thereby denying its power. . . .
The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson (1868) President of the United States

Nixon had Articles of Impeached drafted against him. We all know that story.

            Bill Clinton's impeachment:
            Introduced in House (12/16/1998)
Sets forth four articles impeaching William Jefferson Clinton, President of the United States, for high crimes and misdemeanors.

        2. mamabug   6 years ago

To be fair, the Tenure of Office act itself is probably unconstitutional which is why it ended up revised and abolished.

Johnson didn't commit actual crimes so much as continually flout the will of Congress. And article ten is basically 'we don't like him because he's rude'. He really didn't act much differently from Obama, the difference is that the Republicans had a much stronger majority and the political will to actually insist the president enact the laws they pass.

      2. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

So, yeah past impeachments were kind of legit.

The Constitution only says this about presidential impeachments.
US Constitution, Article II, Section 4:
The President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.

So, lie to a Grand Jury? That is SO ok if you are a Dem.

Lie to Congress? That is SO ok if you are a Dem.

Unsubstantiated rumors that you asked someone (a known liar) to lie to Congress? IMPEACH AND IMPRISON!! Well, only if they are Trump. Seemed OKwhen Obama did the same, after all.

US Army Releases Critical History of the War in Iraq Two-volume study

Years after its completion, the study "The United States Army in the Iraq War," has been made available on the US Army War College Publications website. Released in two volumes, the study is around 1,300 pages long.

    1. Conchfritters   6 years ago

It should have be 150 pages. We kicked their ass in a couple of weeks, found Saddam and his people hanged him, and should have left. But we had to stay for 10 years because of the sectarian civil war we created in the vacuum that was left when the Ba'ath party was wrecked, and it cost us thousands of lives and tens of thousands of wounded. Fuck you Bush family.

      1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

And fuck the Democrats and Republicans that voted for it.

Tlaib and Omar Co-sponsor Bill to Recognize Muslim Holidays as Federal Holidays

Freshman Congressmen Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib have wasted no time in shaking up the US House of Representatives. Early Friday morning, Omar and Tlaib introduced a bill adding Islamic holidays to the Federal calendar which has traditionally only recognized American holidays.

I could use a few more holidays.

The only federal holiday linked to a religion is Christmas and the only reason it's a federal holiday is because 90% of federal workers would try to take that day off anyway.

But if the federal government wants to be closed every Ramadan, I don't see a problem.

The teachers in LA are on strike, which hits me sort of like the Democratic Party striking against itself. Who are they striking against? The Teachers' union is entrenched in the Democratic Party both locally in Los Angeles and statewide in Sacramento. Now Liz Warren and Kamala Harris have weighed in--siding with the the teachers' union.

Isn't the LA Unified School District controlled by Democrats?

Isn't the LA City Council controlled by Democrats?

When these Democrats are siding with the teachers union, exactly whom are they siding against?

    The Democrat taxpayers?

Civil rights groups in LA County that want more money for charter schools?

The ship on that last group may have sailed, and I think it's because of Trump, generally, and "Heavens to" Betsy DeVos, specifically. I suspect that TDS has generally settled into the whole electorate like Spanish Influenza, and whatever support there was in the Democratic Party for charter schools and school choice has gone out the window because of its association with Betsy DeVos and her association with Donald Trump. That's the most reasonable explanation I can come up with for the unreasonable behavior we're seeing.

The teachers unions are striking against a school district and a city council that they control. The question isn't who's supporting them. The question is who's against them. Is it the TDS ghost of Donald Trump?

Taxpayers are the bulwark. Taxpayers are not going to tolerate pay increase after pay increase while schools are producing dumb young adults.

    3. wreckinball   6 years ago

Not just CA. It seems that the teacher's union lobby is just very powerful. Here in PA Wolf won the governor's office by pandering to teacher's unions. Our public schools here suck hard also. People are clamoring all over themselves to get into charter schools but somehow these idiots win elections baffling.

      1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

Its like saying something political against veterans. Its a political loser.

Being "mean" to teachers is a political loser.

What we have here is Shakespeare for idiot cunts. Trump never wanted or expected to win. It was a branding opportunity. But he is incapable of not fucking things up, so his sugar daddy Putin helped him win and now it's all going to fuck.

    1. OpenBordersLiberal-tarian   6 years ago

Trump never wanted or expected to win.

Tony, as a Koch / Reason libertarian I agree with you about pretty much everything except raising the minimum wage and raising taxes on billionaires. But you're wrong here. Remember, we in #TheResistance know Drumpf is literally Hitler. You can't call someone Hitler, then say he didn't really want to win. If nothing else, being Hitler requires a devotion to obtaining power.

Not only did Drumpf want to win, he wanted it so badly he colluded with a hostile foreign power to do it.

      1. FreeRadical   6 years ago

        So transparent. F.

Step it up! I would love to see Tony get into nice cock sucking session with you.

    4. Conchfritters   6 years ago

  33. wreckinball   6 years ago

Still missing the crime? You can do business with foreign entities while running for president. Once president you can;t have a conflict of interest but you can still own your businesses. Did George Washington have to sell his plantation? Nope.

Trump telling to Cohen to lie is what? Did Cohen actually lie? And lying for the most part is not a crime.

The new normal is to consider any dealings with the Russian government or just plain aid Russians as treasonous.
