Pelosi and Schumer to Trump: End the Shutdown Now, Argue About Wall Funding Later
The two Democratic leaders' comments suggest neither side is going to compromise on wall funding anytime soon.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D–Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D–N.Y.) offered a brief response to President Donald Trump's Oval Office address on border security. They emphasized the disruption caused by the current shutdown while arguing for reopening the government without any wall funding.
"President Trump has chosen to hold hostage critical services for the health, safety, and wellbeing of the American people and withhold the paychecks of 800,000 innocent workers across the nation," said Pelosi. She also said Trump must stop "manufacturing a crisis and reopen the government."
"Make no mistake, Democrats and the president want stronger border security, however we sharply disagree with the president about the way to do it," added Schumer, who accused Trump of governing by trantrum. "How do we untangle this mess? Separate the shutdown from arguments over border security."
Both Democrats also did their best to lay the blame for the shutdown on Trump's insistence on funding a border wall, something Pelosi descibed as an "obsession." The two also brought up Trump's oft-made promise that it would be Mexico, not American taxpayers, paying for any border wall.
Schumer and Pelosi also stressed their support for a form of border security that did not include wall funding, with Pelosi saying there was a need for additional technology and personnel that would "secure our borders while honoring our values."
Their position is unlikely to sway Trump, who has repeatedly pledged to oppose any effort to reopen the federal government that does not include $5.7 billion for the construction of a border wall. Postponing discussion on wall funding till a later date would both be a humiliating defeat for the president and eliminate whatever leverage the ongoing shutdown gives him to press for increased border spending.
This all means that the current federal government shutdown, now in its 18th day, will likely continue for the foreseeable future.

Do Schumer and Pelosi want to change the immigration statutes Congress passed? Do they think these laws are unconstitutional? The late Edward Kennedy helped update these statutes!
Or perhaps they think the laws are constitutional, but shouldn't be enforced until they are amended?
Or they think the laws should be enforced, but only with interior enforcement, not a wall.
Seriously, what changes do they wish to make to these statutes, and even with the amendments, would there still be need for enforcement? If so, wouldn't they want a nice wall?
Seems to me they just want to obstruct Trump however they can, no matter the cost to the country...
Umm, they want to strengthen border security, I'd give you the details, but you'd likely keep refusing to deal with facts and reality,

Umm, you're full of shit.

Shut up baby dick.
Okay Hihn
Any other dumbfucks TOTALLY unaware that Democrats are sponsoring six separate bills ... each to fund separate government agencies and departments .. except Homeland Security ... so negotiations can continue on border security ... WITHOUT Trump's shutdown.
Why six bills? Because each has a separate voter constituency!! As Pelosi CONTINUES kicking Trump's ass,
Here's the story, for anyone who does NOT want to be a fucking imbecile, like Sevo, Last of the Shitheads, and Fancylad Three socks of the same cyber-thug (smirk)
Yes, Pelosi is wily and very skillful at using her power in the most cynical and destructive ways possible. Trump is inexperienced in this government gamesmanship, so he makes many tactical errors. Trump thinks he can go over the heads of Congress and appeal to the people directly, a la Reagan, but he is clumsy at it.
More than that, he still has to have the votes! It would take a fair number of Democrats to turn against the party line, and vote for stuff, for it to actually happen. In practice this means he has to break the Dem leadership and get them to cave to get what he wants. Hopefully when welfare starts to run out next month they will!

The apple falls pretty far from the tree, apparently.
The only thing of worth associated with Dumbfuck Hihnsano that was ever removed from society was the tumor in his neck.
Seriously, what changes do they wish to make
This is the problem with their current position. They supported and voted for border enforcement up to and including a barrier and now it is somehow wrong and they are unwilling to appropriate funding for existing immigration and border enforcement law.
Nah, we've been down this road before. Promises unfulfilled no more
Exactly.
Too many times in the past, Democrats have 'promised' "If you give us what we want now, we will work on what you want later".
Fool me once... etc.
The word of a democrat has no value.
Yeah, Trump is stupid enough to reject their bills to fund all the government, except Homeland Security, and keep negotiating border security. Yeah, Trump, being strategically inept, will prove (again) that the shutdown is entirely his.
It's almost funny, watching Pelosi repeatedly kicking his sorry ass.

"It's almost funny, watching Pelosi repeatedly kicking his sorry ass."
Almost as funny as watching lefty fucking ignoramuses making some idiotic claims of 'victory' when there was nothing of the sort, lefty fucking ignoramus.
Any dumbfucks --- OTHER THAN SEVO -- too STUPID to know that Democrats are sponsoring six separate bills ... each to fund separate government agencies and departments .. except Homeland Security ... so negotiations can continue on border security ... WITHOUT Trump's shutdown.

lol.
Pelosi is a swamp rat. She is a very good swamp rat. What did her daughter say, something like " she will cut your head off and you will not know you are bleeding".
Trump comes from somewhere else promising to drain the swamp. That has not proven to be easy. He has fired or otherwise lost many of his guides in swamp life. He does not need them his "gut" is better than all the experts out there.
This is not the first shutdown or national emergency and it will not be the last.
So far as victory. C'mon libertarians know there are only degrees of losing.
Pelosi couldn't kick anyone in the ass. If she lifts her leg her face slips below her neckline.
Hihn, kill yourself.
MOAR ignorant psychos or Trumptards (same thing)
.... Rufus ... Echospinner ... Fats of Fury ... Last of the Shitheads)...

Eagerly brainwashed by Trump and Fox Pravda.
Here's the story, for anyone who does NOT want to be a fucking imbecile
But if they SNEER and talk like THUGS ... they can change reality!
Do they know what YEAR it is? (snort)
LOL

Trump will sign a budget bill as soon as passes a budget bill for all the government that contains the money needed to build the barrier and other border security needs.
Pass the bill and government shutdown is over. Don't pass the bill with the needed funds then the shutdown continues until the complete government is funded along with the border security funds. It is up to you how long the government stays shut down.
Every week Trump should demand another item to pass a bill.
Week 1 - Add $5B to the demand
Week 2 - Add reduce the amnesty for dreamers to the demand
Week 3 - Add eVerify to the demand
He could go on and on
"This is not what we agreed on!"
"I have altered the deal. Pray I do not alter it further."
Yes, I like that.
The wall is stupid; ask China.
What's more stupid is that Schdumb and Pldumber thinking they have the power to do otherwise. That act will fly in SF, Madison, Boston and Berkeley; the rest of the country seems un-impressed.
Where did the asshole rev go?
Or ask the East Germans.
Or ask the Soviets how well their air defense system kept a little Cessna (I think) from landing in Red Square.
But hey, it's only $5B $25B $55B AS MUCH AS IT GODDAM TAKES. Who's counting pennies?
When I was around 10 years old I saw all that in Berlin. It was the height of the Cold War although I did not understand all that then. Made a big impression which probably affects me to this day. We went through checkpoint Charlie on a bus to the other side.
Looked like the most evil thing I ever saw.
The base we lived in in Germany had a big chain link fence around it with barbed wire as did the motor pool which we wanted to get into.
So we just dug under it to play with the German kids who kicked our butts in soccer but we showed them baseball. The MPs found our tunnel to the motor pool eventually.
This was just kids playing and messing around. Adults are much more dangerous.
The president missed a chance. He walled himself into a corner.
The Berlin Wall was designed to keep its citizens in as prisoners. The border wall is designed to keep illegals out. Big difference.
There will be no tunneling under the system ive seen presented. It is much taller, deeper, and has multiple layers, each designed to counter different types of incursion and employs modern technology.
The bottom line is, most of you who are against it just don't like it and want porous borders.
Yet it is brought up as an effective example of walls.
The chance missed was as in the past. Nobody can come up with a plan to reform immigration.
We are down to concrete or steel.
Once the border is secure, we can sort out who is already here who shouldn't be and deal with that. Then we can look at real legal immigration reform. Which is what most people really want.
There will be no wall. Most people don't want it. Even if Trump finds some money and starts building a wall, most Americans want him out of office, so in a couple of years better Americans would tear down anything Trump constructs at the border.
After that, America's liberal-libertarian mainstream will really start to stomp on right-wing preferences, in some cases just for the sport of it.
Carry on clingers. So far as your betters permit, anyway.
Don't you have a glory hole to attend?
You are my favorite shitlord! Speaking truth to power. . . Whatever that means
The wall is stupid; ask China.
China doesn't have a problem with illegal immigrants from Central and South America.
Looks to me like their wall is working well.
What's Reason's take? Open the government because we all need our lives managed for us?
Trump is magic, he is able to get Reason "libertarians" to argue for government funding and to keep a bloated government open....
In other news, the UAW and the Detroit car makers blame each other for strikes, coal miners and mine companies blame each other for strikes, antifa and neo-nazis blame each other for strife in the streets, and the NRA and Bloomberg blame each other for murder.
None of them really want to solve their problems. They just want to blame each other for the problems because it increases their fan base and budgets.
Trump, actually wants to solve problems. He is not an inveterate politician, and has no stake in perpetuating this bullshit.
Trump wants to solve problems the way an eight-year-old want to be a fireman.
And a cowboy.
And an astronaut.
And a shortstop.
And he's just as likely to accomplish what he wants.
Yeah, look how he f'd up the Central Park skating rink!!
Oh, wait....
Or the way Arthur L. Hicklib wants to be someone other than an 85 IQ retard.
They look like they're an item.
They share the same bra cup size.
Except Nancy fills hers with crumpled tissues.
What critical services are blocked by the shutdown? I know this is just a bromide by the progressive twins, but why that wasn't addressed in the article is beyond me.
To that point, why isn't there a better challenge to the blame game quoted in the article? If we're all honest then we'll see both sides are to blame. Some "people" above point out that the Republicans weren't more staunchly prepared to pass the bill, but are we really on the side of leaving the sixty vote rule? I do recall how much everyone belabored Harry Reid for that action.
Not much. Last I saw IRS and the food stamp people said they have it covered.
Thing with this whole wall debate is we have been at it since before the elections.
Most of us have our minds made up.
"Wiggum: Okay, folks, show's over. Nothing to see here, show's? Oh my God! A horrible plane crash! Hey, everybody, get a load of this flaming wreckage! Come on, crowd around, crowd around! Don't be shy, crowd around!"
I've been saying that for weeks. Most people are barely aware of the shutdown and could give a shit. Only the beltway people and folks like us potentially care, and already k ow how we're going to vote.
Shutdowns don't swing elections.

Shutdowns don't swing elections.
The GOP could have done much better in years past, if they'd understood this. Instead they contrived to cave just as people started noticing that the shutdown wasn't hurting them. Right at the moment public opinion hit bottom and started back up.

I love this. Trump becomes more libertarian every day he lets this shutdown last, showing just how useless the federal government is. He also cuts regulations like a total boss, passed criminal justice reform, and is pulling us out of wars. Imagine how hard the editors would cream themselves if Obama did any of that.
And every day I get to come here and read from supposed libertarians that he's orange Hitler, that physical barriers that would guide immigrants to legal ports of entry are ineffective or immoral (pick one morons), and that he's threatening our democracy via tweets.
Look at that pathetic rebuttal from Schumer and Pelosi. Those are the two clowns the left "libertarians" want to side wide, over the guy being more libertarian than any president in decades? Do you really want to cry over 5 billion when Trump's fighting to STOP UNNECESSARY WARS?
Wake up haters and losers, because Libertopia ain't a fucking thing.
While Trump has done some good things, he's not remotely libertarian. He neither conducts himself nor his administration in what one would call a libertarian fashion. His trade war is about as anti-liberty as it gets.
He proved he wasn't a true Libertarian when he actually won an election.
Oof. Murdered by words.
LOL!
LOL!
No, he isn't. Trump is a pragmatist, not an ideologue. However, I'm sure he sees low productivity federal employees as layabouts that should be scraped off at the first opportunity. He is a businessman, and that greatly defines his world view.
Trump is accomplishing more libertarian things than any libertarian in my lifetime.
Why?
Because, as we all know, markets work, government harms.
Trump is a pragmatist. He naturally flows towards things that work. He also doesn't live in fantasy-land where every policy decision is decided by how it would theoretically work in libertopia. Trade, immigration, all of it is based on real life factors. His policy is do what works for the American people. Trump is making libertarians show their ass because libertarians are incapable of understanding the entirety, let alone the basics, of any system that isn't their ideal system.
Yup. He isn't doing most of what he's doing because of principle, but because it works.
Which has ALSO led him to some of his non libertarian positions... Those too often achieve ends most people find desirable.
But at the end of the day, he has done more things that overlap with libertarian positions than anybody else I can recall in a long time. And the non libertarian things he is doing happen to align pretty well with the areas where I don't believe in libertarian orthodoxy to boot! So he's doing pretty damn okay in my book. I really regret voting for Gay Jay instead of him actually... I've never voted for an R or a D for pres, but I will vote for Trump next time around. It's just a protest vote since I live in a solid D state, but it is a show of support.
There is nothing libertarian about demonizing and scapegoating an entire class of innocent people for the problems of a nation. It is antithetical to the values of liberty and individualism.
What about when that group of people, as a whole, are in fact responsible for a number of the problems in that nation?
The US would probably have a 30% lower murder rate if our Hispanic population was still around ~2% like it was in the 60s. ~16% of population = ~35% of murders according to the FBI.
What about swinging entire states to the left? What about being net negative tax payers?
None of these things are individually going to bring the whole country crashing down just yet... But they're all major fucking annoyances. And they need not be tolerated. So other than some bullshit moral play, what is the PRACTICAL reason one should subject themselves to a shit ton of problems? Granted, they have suppressed wages for working class people, which benefits the upper middle class on up... But that is a downside to as many Americans as it is an upside.
So again, other than a morality play, why should Americans slit their own throats... Even if it's not so deep a cut as to be lethal?
"This all means that the current federal government shutdown, now in its 18th day, will likely continue for the foreseeable future."
God, I hope so. I hope it lasts until Trump begins his 2nd term as prez.
Why only til then? He might as well ride it out until the end of his 2nd term!
begins completes

The TSA is conducting a sickin. Say hello to my little friend PATCO.
When will Chuck Schumer (D?N.Y.) discuss his previous support for the wall and the reasons he changed his policy? Until he does, what he says means nothing.
No, that history has been shoved down the old memory hole, and the MSM will cooperate in keeping it there.
Schumer and Pelosi favored a wall, when they knew that favoring it could be relied on not to result in one being built. The difference today is that, if they fund a wall, Trump will actually build it.
They haven't changed their minds, they never wanted a secure border. It's just that the stakes are higher now, and the price of pretending to favor border security are higher now that we have a President who isn't lying about wanting it.
Having read the transcript of both Trump and their remarks last night, I was impressed at just how weak their response was. Not that it has to be strong, when last night's 8 minutes are the last time the media will let anyone hear what Trump had to say.... It's relatively easy to refute arguments that you know will be silenced.

The usual Democrat compromise - give us what we want now and we'll talk about what you want later. And this is of course called reasonable and bipartisan.
We can negotiate after you give up all of your leverage.
It worked for Obama against his establishment R opponents. Against Trump, not so much.
...and this is part of the reason Trump became the Republican nominee. He would stand up and fight.
One of my favorite things about him.
Yup. The Rs being cucks is what really got this country to the point where it is now. If they'd been half as tough and stubborn as Dems this country would be far better off right now. I will NEVER forgive the establishment Rs for their betrayal over the last few decades.
End the Shutdown Now, Argue About Wall Funding Later
By later they mean never. Compromise only seems to go one way.
In any compromise with evil, evil wins.
So this will turn out to be win-win then
Trump should start sending DACA's back home.
YES! Their home countries need them a lot more than we do, what with them all being rocket scientists and engineers and such. LOL
Disagree. These ar3 kids whose home country is the USA. You can send the parents home as soon as the kids reach 21, however.
Well, technically DACA kids were all born abroad. If they were born here they don't need DACA protection. Some of them came here when they are well into their teens, others as infants. Either way, I'm find with sending them all back with their parents. The truth is they've just been a bunch of whiney pains in the ass.
I can go along with the idea that a wall built by the federal government may be a giant fail. After all, I'm a libertarian. My baseline assumption is that the feds are no more competent than a monkey trying to fuck a football.
But then the "progressives" say that what they want is to handle it with technology such as drones, because a wall is "immoral". Okay, so the drones spot illegals crossing the border, and the Border Patrol goes and detains said illegals. The "progressives" hate that last part a lot, they're always whining about it. That's "immoral" too. So what is the point of having drones or sensors at the border, in their scheme?
The great thing about active defenses is that they can easily be turned off.
Then you can keep importing voters, growing the welfare state, and creating ethnic enclaves.
Walls, which are (largely) passive defenses, remain even when the political winds shift.
And that's it. They know they can always just change priorities with active deployment of drones/people. A wall will just sit there being a pain in the ass that people have to expend great energy to get around for a LONG time.
How is tipping a pain in the ass? Since it won't block ports of entry, I fail to see a problem.
I made this exact point the other day with my Progressive aunt. I question how effective and how costly a wall would be, but at least a passive deterrent would usher people to a limited number of entry points. If they are being honest about wanting to enforce our borders then I don't see how relying solely on technological monitoring and active measures will be less costly or more humane. Without the wall we count on more guys with guns patrolling the border and capturing people.
I also hate how dishonest they are regarding deaths and injuries of people attempting to cross illegally. Why is it on our conscience that a person seeks to break the law and puts him/herself in danger rather than following protocol? Putting the recent deaths of those kids on border control essentially takes all responsibility off of the individuals. It also implies to me that they think we should not only keep the border open, but go into mexico and pick up everyone who wants to come in so they don't face hardships
So what was Schumer and Pelosi's plan to secure our border without a wall, again?
Free healthcare and other welfare benefits. At least that seems to be the proposal from Gavin Newsom.
I watched both sides last night and was disgusted. I don't like Trump, though I get the policies. I just don't like the soulless man, with the fear mingering crap. And then Pelosi and Schumer came on. To quote the other article's quote, "This strange spectacle was blessedly brief and, unbelievably, followed by an even less credible attempt at coming across like human beings from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D?Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D?N.Y.). Or, as Petri put it: "The Democrats responded, in a long hallway, looking like something out of 'The Shining,' that the Government Shutdown Belongs In the President's Lap." All blame game. No real truth from either side. Proof that government is always a shitstorm because people are assholes, especially politicians.
I watched both sides last night
I advise against that.
and was disgusted.
See?
What kind of negotiating is that? "Give us what we want and we can talk about what you want later." smh
Very common tactic. Both sides want to frame the issue on their own terms. Trump wants the wall. Dems will try and make it about funding the government. It is more of a standoff than a negotiation.
It is really all about power politics. The wall is just a prop.
Meanwhile there is no progress which is just fine by me.
Democrats are such TURDS. The Democrats have stated from the beginning that they do not want a wall so what is there to discuss?
They do not care that the American Tax payer pays 132 Billion for the "privledeged" to have people in this country
illegally.
That is over One Tenth of the Deficit. about 13.2% actually.
People who do not speak English and have no skills either male to little to pay any Income Tax or work under the Table.
Sorry, Trump is asking for how much ONE TIME verses the 132 Billion we spend every year?
This just proves there is no logic on the LEFT.
