GoFundMe Page Trolls Border Wall With 'Ladders' Campaign, Raises $80,000 for Immigration Nonprofit

The campaign isn't actually about ladders.

GoFundMe

What's the best way to climb over a wall? If you're thinking "a ladder," you're probably right. Hence a trolling GoFundMe page titled "Ladders to Get Over Trump's Wall."

Some background: On Sunday, conservative activist Brian Kolfage set up a GoFundMe campaign to pay for President Donald Trump's proposed border wall on the U.S.–Mexico border with private funds. The campaign has raised almost $12 million from nearly 200,000 people in just five days.

That gave one Twitter user an idea. "The MAGA dumdums are crowdsourcing money for the wall," @HoarseWisperer tweeted Wednesday. "Should we crowdsource money for ladders just to troll them?"

The tweet was a joke, but the Human Rights Campaign's Charlotte Clymer ran with it anyway. Clymer set up the "ladders" GoFundMe, which has since raised more than $80,000.

Last night, @HoarseWisperer joked about a GoFundMe to buy ladders in response to this border wall nonsense. I laughed but then thought: "Wait, why not?"

We've now raised $13,000 for, um, "ladders". (Actually going to @RAICESTEXAS). #GoFundTheWallhttps://t.co/CHMKJZqj25

— Charlotte Clymer (@cmclymer) December 20, 2018

As Clymer notes above, the money won't actually go to buy ladders. All funds raised will be donated to the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), a Texas-based nonprofit that provides immigrants and refugees with low-cost legal services. "This GoFundMe isn't really about ladders at all," the GoFundMe says. "It's about lifting people up."

Clymer says RAICES "loves" the idea, and that the nonprofit would be added as a team member to the campaign.

Clymer wants to draw attention to the fact that immigrants help the nation, not hurt it. "I've really been happy with how this has generated conversation on just the absurdity of the wall in general," she tells Business Insider. "Undocumented folks are not bringing crime or drug smuggling or any of this job-stealing nonsense to our country." Those who support the wall "know it won't help, but they would gladly spite themselves just to keep brown people out of our country," she adds to Newsweek.

Her criticism of the wall itself is spot-on. Click on this this link for a rundown of why it's such a bad idea.

This isn't the first time the wall has inspired some trollish citizen resistance. Last year, the company behind Cards Against Humanity announced that it had bought a plot of land on the U.S.–Mexico border with the goal of making it "as time-consuming and expensive as possible" for Trump to build his wall. As Reason's Christian Britschgi wrote at the time, their efforts were likely for naught, considering that Trump doesn't seem to care all that much for private property rights.

It was still an entertaining way to make a point. But I'm not sure it reaches the trolling heights of a ladders-to-get-over-the-wall fundraiser.

Hence a trolling GoFundMe page titled "Ladders to Get Over Trump's Wall."

It's not really trolling until they have more than the wall people.

    1. Chipper Morning Baculum   7 years ago

The wall idea is so retarded. The Iron Curtain had a fence with razor wire, then a mine field, and then giant rolls of razor wire on the other side of the mine field. Oh, also, the fence was electrified and there were guard towers with guards armed with machine guns. Guess what. People still made it across. They built ladders, petal-powered chairs to travel on power lines, hangliders, and even small airplanes.

This doesn't even address the huge coastlines of the U.S. through which people can enter on boats, or the fact that people can visit as tourists and never leave.

Trump's wall is just a dumb puppet show and reflects his personal obsession with building useless structures on which he can put his name.

      2. JesseAz   7 years ago

Which border had more people across? Germany or an open border between Spain and France? You probably spray for pests even though it doesn't get them all either. What a silly argument you make.

chipper isn't rational on this subject.

      3. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Notice people like Baculum discuss ad nauseam about how the wall wont work.

Its almost like they know it will work, hence the rants.

      4. JoeBlow123   7 years ago

This is largely a bunch of bullshit. You just made up a bunch of baloney to fit your desired narrative. Let me ask you, how many people do you see escaping across North Korea to South Korea across an armed border? Not so easy, ehh?

"In 1961, 8,507 people fled across the border, most of them through West Berlin. The construction of the Berlin Wall that year reduced the number of escapees by 75% to around 2,300 per annum for the rest of the decade. The Wall changed Berlin from being one of the easiest places to cross the border, from the East, to being one of the most difficult.[1] The number of escapees fell further to 868 per annum during the 1970s and to only 334 per annum between 1980 and 1988."
Escape Numbers Across East German Border

        1. Alive Free Happy   7 years ago

What do you mean escape? The Berlin Wall was built to stop corrupt westerners from taking advantage of the soviet paradise, and to stop corrupt western powers from disrupting the reformation of the economy.

      5. CE   7 years ago

yeah, how far out in the ocean will the wall extend.

the Coast Guard can't be everywhere

"?building useless structures on which he can put his name."

        The Trump Wall.

Someday it'll be more famous than the Berlin Wall. And equally infamous.

Ultimate trolling would be going after them for conspiracy to commit a crime.

      1. TGoodchild   7 years ago

Indeed. Oh, perhaps more easily, fraud. The money is going to pay "Ladders for Migrant Siblings" student loans.

There is NO FRAUD. You've been suckered, by the political elites.

GoFundMe Page Trolls Border Wall With 'Ladders' Campaign, Raises $75,000 for Immigration Nonprofit

People who hate America will have to try harder than that.

Even funnier is that the donations for completing the wall wont be cashed since the federal government needs to do it.

The morons who contribute for "ladders" will be charged since the nonprofit will need to buy ladders for it not to be fraud.

        Sociopath or Psychopath?

A psychopath doesn't have a conscience. If he lies to you so he can steal your money, he won't feel any moral qualms, though he may pretend to. ?

Both lack empathy .. But a psychopath has less regard for others. Someone with this personality type sees others as objects he can use for his own benefit.

It's not easy to spot a psychopath. They can be intelligent, charming, and good at mimicking emotions. ?
Sociopaths are less able to play along. They make it plain that they're not interested in anyone but themselves. They often blame others and have excuses for their behavior.

        Traits of Sociopath?

3 or more of the following qualifies for the diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy):

Callous unconcern for the feelings of others. Gross and persistent attitude of irresponsibility and disregard for social norms, and obligations.

        Incapacity to maintain enduring relationships,..

Very low tolerance to frustration, a low threshold for discharge of aggression ?

Incapacity to experience guilt or to profit from experience, particularly punishment.
        Markedly prone to blame others
or to offer plausible rationalization for the behavior that has brought the person into conflict with society.

Nations eject undocumented foreign nationals all the time. Canada don't give free stuff and residency to illegals, so they don't have to worry about kicking out millions of people. They can't settle in to begin with.

      5. Alive Free Happy   7 years ago

Actually, the Berlin Wall was built to keep westerners out... at least that is what Heinrich said in 1961. But to address your assertion: I live near the border. I know what immigrants look like very well. I happen to want them - any and all that wish to come. America is about work and thrive, not filter and pick. What you should be concerned about, if you really are an American, is that the Berlin wall, the Iron Curtain, and the Bamboo Curtain... all of these walls were built with the excuse of keeping out the unwanted. In reality, they kept in the slaves. You might want to remember that your personal share of the National Debt is over $100,000. I recommend that maybe you should contribute to the Go-Fund-Me page heavily, but request that ladders be place on both sides of the wall.

How about the really, really good ol' days of the nineteenth century Know Nothing Party? That was when a bunch of sleazy loathsome politicians convinced a bunch of not-very-bright dupes that all their problems were caused by (gasp in horror) Irish, Italian, and Catholic immigrants. Yep, some people allowed themselves to be led by the nose into frenzied fear over these sub-human groups. They were brutes and animals !!! They rape our women !!! Savage our towns !!! The power-hunger pols soon figured they couldn't lay it on too thick - their audience was that willingly stupid.

Of course I doubt even they could fall for something so imbecilic as Trump's Caravan Terror, but dupes are so less hardy these days.....

      1. Fk_Censorship   7 years ago

In all fairness, the US would probably be more libertarian had those Irish, Italian, Catholics not come in such large numbers.

    1. Tony   7 years ago

What if the thing is thousands of miles of a monument to a politician's ego that would require massive federal land grabs?

      1. Sigivald   7 years ago

Don't the Feds already have rights of way for the border even without a wall?

(And, well, remember, we're not all Rothbardian anarchists; eminent domain claims for the border are well within the Hayekian wheelhouse of "libertarian".

As policy, I think the wall is probably a waste of money and there's better ways to both turn illegal immigration into legal immigration, and keep actual bad actors out, and a bunch of other reforms around the issue.

But ... "eminent domain would be needed" is not an automatic DQ; eminent domain for actual public works that can't be achieved without it, of which "a border wall" is possibly the BEST example, is not axiomatically un-libertarian.)

        1. Agammamon   7 years ago

No. They have an easement for *travel* on private land within 10 miles of the border, but that's it. Well, along with ICE's 'custom's exemption to the Constitution'. But they can't just string barbed wire across your property even if your southern border is the US' southern border. They have to ED the property they need to do that.

          1. Agammamon   7 years ago

And that's just for property right on the border. There are lot's of places where its not suitable terrain to build a border wall at the border - in some parts of the country where there already are existing wall segments, those segments can be several miles north of the border. There are Americans, living in America, who are restricted from the rest of the US because they have to go through a border-wall checkpoint because their homes now lie south of the wall.

And then there are people - like ranchers - that have the value of their property destroyed because they can't get at half of it anymore.

        2. lafe.long   7 years ago

          Sig... you're talking to Tony.

Tony KNOWS there are no libertarians here... only cousinfucking trumptards. He proclaims this on (at lease) a daily basis.

Let alone any nuanced conversation re Rothbard vs Hayek.

        3. JFree   7 years ago

Eminent domain is needed but there is absolutely no reason for the feds to roll over and play dead as if the feds are dependent on those land owners. Those land owners are dependent on the feds for their title.

If a landowner wants to hold the feds hostage, then it is entirely reasonable for the feds to begin negotiating with Mexico to transfer sovereignty. You can bet Mexico will engage with that. You can bet Mexico will keep their own constitution that prohibits foreign land ownership near their border. And you can bet that the last thing those landowners want is to have the land title adjudicated by a Mexican court.

      2. Agammamon   7 years ago

Its still more libertarian to have private individuals putting up the funding for the Federal government than for the Federal government to do all these land grabs *and* take the money to fund them by force.

        Incrementalism, I guess.

Libertarians cannot possibly voluntarily pay taxes or agree to this Constitutional Democratic Republic.

Its very Libertarian to enforce national sovereignty.

Rejecting personal sovereignty for national sovereignty is very libertarian.

          1. DivineStrike   7 years ago

You cant have personal sovereignty without national sovereignty, because then the other nations, peoples and organizations of the world will just claim sovereignty over you. A small limited, but well defined, national government that enforces the nations borders, is what libertarians should be working toward. This open borders free for all nonsense just invites every other organization on earth to claim dominion over you.

            1. Agammamon   7 years ago

Personal sovereignty exists before collective sovereignty. You can absolutely have the former without the latter.

          2. Leo Kovalensky II   7 years ago

LC just hates it when individual actions get in the way of his collectivist ideals. He hates it so much that he embraces big government solutions to the problem. He's even willing to tax, spend, and land grab his way to his collectivist ideals.

But he's the real libertarian, just ask.

            1. Last of the Shitlords   7 years ago

You consider our constitutional republic to be collectivist. So you're not exactly a sane source on the subject.

              1. Leo Kovalensky II   7 years ago

No, I consider the idea of shared property rights to be collectivist.

For example, the idea that the people (aka government, the collective of citizens) owns all the property in America and gets to define who can and who cannot travel on it with a majority vote. That idea is collectivist.

                1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

The big flaw with anarchists. You cant possibly have volunteer shared property rights. You cant possibly have all people agree to have rule of law and a Constitutional Democratic Republic.

                2. Last of the Shitlords   7 years ago

As opposed to your anarchist whims? Thanks, I'll take our constitutional republic over your ramblings anytime.

            1. Fk_Censorship   7 years ago

The United Arab Emirates has pretty privatized immigration policies. A sponsor can bring anybody in, temporarily, and is responsible for that guest financially and in terms of liability. To me it's a really sensible solution.

            2. John Galt Jr   7 years ago

This is the clearest confirmation of your authoritarian nature. Juice is correct, except how he SEEMS to use "rejecting." It's "choosing" -- as in "the moral is the chosen.

Personal sovereignty = individual liberty, i.e. being sovereign over one's self.
A core principle in Jefferson's Declaration of Independence.

Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

              1) The people are sovereign.
              2) Thus, governments have JUST powers" unless the people consent to ... whatever they choose to.
              3) It's the consent which makes the powers just. A sovereign King has powers but they are not just.
              4) Also a core principle in libertarianism, which Juice got right.

Only one can be sovereign (supreme)
              a) the people or
              b) an unjust government.

Its very Libertarian to enforce national sovereignty.

That is blatantly authoritarian, so typical of the Authoritarian Right.

              THE PEOPLE ARE SOVEREIGN.
Libertarians enforce NOTHING (in that context)

This MAY explain your confusion about anarchy.
Anarchy is ONE example of not YOUR government.
Another example is a JUST government -- also not YOUR depiction of government.

(A libertarian/free society can have a government, but the exact opposite of YOURS)

              Any questions?

This is what drives me crazy about most Libertarians, you want this great free Libertarian society, but you all have hard ons for open borders. WHY? Hmm how are we going to get more votes, and libertarians in office, to start passing libertarian policies? Oh i know lets import several million socialists that will help us. You keep drowning libertarianism in the bathwaters of open borders.

    1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Open border people arent Libertarians. Theyre Lefties or Anarchists.

    3. John Galt Jr   7 years ago

You may safely ignore two responses from the VERY Authoritarian Right.

Oh i know lets import several million socialists that will help us

Can't fool me. Your "us" is not libertarian, as revealed by "several million socialists." -- since you seem convinced that we cannot show them a better way of getting what they want. Umm ....

The "caravan" are people who walked hundreds of miles, many risking their lives, to ESCAPE socialism
When the boat people came here from Cuba ... did they come to establish communism, or to escape it?
Likewise the VietNam boat people. We received over a million of them, and enjoyed the best economy of the late 20th century.

    4. Hank Phillips   7 years ago

"We" don't. Hostile ideologues have infiltrated and inserted bad planks (child molesting, coddling confessed murderers) and mangled the good one by turning the Migration plank into a welcome mat for germ warfare terrorists. We need votes to force the looters to repeal bad laws, rather than to turn honest folks into officeholding politicians--though electing a few is good for morale. Libertarian parties are banned in most of Latin America, hence the socialist refugees.

      1. John Galt Jr   7 years ago

        "We" don't.

That's my point! But you are NOT libertarian. VERY authoritarian

(child molesting, coddling confessed murderers) and mangled the good one by turning the Migration plank into a welcome mat for germ warfare terrorist

That's scary, but the next may be scarier,

We need votes to force the looters to repeal bad laws,

You need to thinkl WAY outside the (broken box)
Only Taxpayers can drain the swamp, How to empower them?
UNdelegating powers is both Jeffersonian and Randian.
The PRO-LIBERTY (not anti-gummint) notion of competing governments. But don't go ape-shit. NEW federalism would have state and federal competing for programs, power and revenue. At the lower level, counties and cities compete.

We cannot win inside a system which has been failing for at least a century. No less than Jefferson STRONGLY opposed the "perpetual" constitution we wound up with.

        1. DivineStrike   6 years ago

You will never reform that system if you keep importing people who overwhelmingly vote democrat, and for socialist policies. Sure the caravan people are fleeing their socialist country, but do they know it was socialism that made their country shit? No.

I was in California this last week and I asked them about their high gas prices, high housing costs, high taxes, poor schools, crime, poverty and homeless, and do you know what pretty much the only answer i got? Donald Trump did it. I couldn't believe it; these are all state and local problems that have existed for years, Yet somehow everyone seemed convinced that it all started once Trump took office. I said look we don't have these problems in other states, doesn't that mean it is a California thing? Nope its Trumps fault.

Why would they say this? Is it because that all they are told every time they complain about any issue, they're shown the great boogeyman Donald Trump? So they go through life never knowing that all the pain the government causes them is due to policies they vote for. Look at how clueless the people in Detroit have been for 60 years. They keep voting for the same people that destroyed their city.

So for you to say that just because the caravan is fleeing a socialist country means, they are not socialist. I find that laughable. I mean we see it all the time when people move from Blue states because of all the high taxes and crime, and then vote for those same policies once they get in a Red state.

If a North Korean escaped the gulag and whatever nation he fled to offered him asylum on the spot, do you expect him to stomp his feet and say "No no no, I want to go to America, where I can find a job and a better life, and they'll give me better food".

Stop this. Just stop it. These people are economic migrants, if at that. There would be no difference between the caravan and 7 thousand chronically unemployed Japanese citizens flying in and demanding passageway to the US. They bypassed legal asylum process and were assisted by an activist organization who has a vested interest in herding migrants to the United states.

Go fund me would slash 15% of their workforce with a flick of the wrist to remain solvent. No amount of "uplifting families" rhetoric would change their mind. They'll throw a hissy fit if SF slapped them with a 30% tax increase to support the refugees. They troll the wall funders but would kiss China's ring subserviently. Progressive corporate culture is a despicable cesspool.

If we can't be the world's policeman, then don't have to be the world's orphanage. Sorry, that's the deal. Just imagine, a government telling its citizens "We have to take in 7000 poor people from abroad every year, because they only want to come to our country, and we have to spend our own money to take care of them, sorry". It's just..... ridiculous. Outside of America and pars of the west they'll be tarred and feathered.

Land of the free. Home of the brave.

      It's just..... ridiculous.

      Would your ancestors agree?

P.S. Trump had the deal ... and walked away ... to please Coulter, Limbaugh, Levin. They own him, and it's his own blunder, his total lack of business management skills, and his own failures as a deal maker.

The Gee-Oh-Pee platform calls for a FENCE, a Coathanger Abortion amendment, jailing kids over plant leaves and lots of antipersonnel weapons. Maneuver the looters to where they have to delete some of that or get beaten by Dems eager to inflict carbon taxes and endanger electrical power, and poof... no more Amerikaner Mauer.

We have better things to spend $30-50 billion on than a vanity wall for an orange idiot.

Far too much time and energy has been spent on this silly idea already.

  19. Ellis Wyatt   7 years ago

FUCK YOU TRUMP ... YOU HAD THE FULL $25 BILLION WALL ... YOU BROKE THE DEAL

The immigration deal Trump should've taken, but didn't

... Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) met privately with Trump at the White House in January, and the two had what was described as the "Cheeseburger Summit." After the meeting, the Democratic leader seemed optimistic that he and the president had come up with the "framework" for an immigration deal.

... the basic contours of the deal were straightforward: Schumer was willing to accept funding for a border wall in exchange for DACA protections for Dreamers.

After Trump negotiated the terms, the White House balked: Chief of Staff John Kelly called Schumer soon after to explain the plan wasn't far enough to the right for Republicans. Trump himself declared that he'd need far more in any deal, including significant cuts to legal immigration.

[All Trump] had to do was accept a 10- to 14-year path to citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants brought to the United States at a young age.

Trump gives Democrats a path to citizenship for 1.8 million Dreamers; Democrats give Trump his full $25 billion wall funding request. [?]

    Deal-maker my ass.
PUSSY CANNOT KEEP HIS WORD, WHO COULD TRUST HIM?

  20. ShotgunJimbo   7 years ago

Maybe the various partisans interested in independently funding the wall (or "ladders") to get govt out of paying for it could, bare with me here, instead put some money into an HSA and retirement account so the govt doesn't have to take care of their health and retirement. That would be something to behold.

  25. Hank Phillips   7 years ago

About half of the ruin, cruelty and violence that destroyed the People's States south of the border was inflicted by agencies of the U.S. Kleptocracy exporting pseudoscientific sumptuary laws. The rest is traceable to superstitious altruistic collectivism emanating from European socialism and the Papal States--the ideology that signed the Lateran treaties with Mussolini to persecute everything jewish and to use government schools to brainwash children with mysticism. Welcoming the fleeing hordes will in no way improve their lot or our own. The uninspected entry sabotage on the LP platform will rightly alienate the voters who gave us a 328% increase--BEFORE the plank was mangled.
