If we're going to recognize *any* unenumerated constitutional rights, shouldn't one of those rights be the right of parents to direct the upbringing of their children, subject to regulations against *real* child neglect and abuse?

In fact, that right exists to the extent of parents being able to choose private schools for their kids, according to the Supreme Court.

But the right doesn't exist to the extent of parents being able to let their kids grow up normally?

Seems odd that you would rationalize this on the basis that children are parental property rather than children have a natural right to exercise liberty.

Personally - I've had enough of the constitutional arguments based on people are property. Wouldathunk our history discredited that.

As indicated by the very examples cited by the Free Range Kids movement, the alternative to parental authority is not kids being free, its their being wards of the state, with the parents as wardens carrying out the state's instructions.

...and if the state doesn't agree with the parents' childrearing philosophy, then it takes the kids away altogether and appoints new wardens.
