Brickbat: It's Not My Job

Leaders of London, England's Metropolitan Police have warned they may tell officers to stop trying to arrest resisting suspects unless they start getting support from the public. The remarks came after several incidents of officers being assaulted while people filmed the confrontations but did not intervene. "We don't come to work to get assaulted, and if we're not going to be backed up in what we're doing then what is the point?" said Ken Marsh, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation.

"We don't come to work to get assaulted. We come to work to do the assaulting. So make sure you only go after the weak ones. You know, the Twitter abusers."
Cops want to be lauded as heroic sheepdogs with all the privileges and immunities and benefits, while complaining of the risks that sheepdogs must endure while being a sheepdog.
Imagine all the ways a citizen intervening in a cop-scrum might suffer a negative outcome(s), up to and including death by friendly fire. A bed has been made by the new professionals. Let them lie in it.
"We kill anyone who fails to obey. Fucking pussies."

Meh, sound more like the drug dealers at the off-Broadway drug den. Paterson police try not to kill anyone, and they had a policy of not going near the drug den if they could avoid it. This is called "community policing", and statistics show that it greatly reduces reported crime.
if we're not going to be backed up in what we're doing then what is the point?
They seem to be dimly grasping the issue - if people don't support what you're doing, maybe you should stop doing it. But I'd suggest looking a little closer into the problem, maybe investigate what exactly it is the people don't approve of your doing.
Yep, most of the teachers at that Brooklyn school where I used to teach felt the same way. They figured that if the kids didn't feel like doing their homework, it's because their previous teachers failed to adequately prepare them for that grade or the standardized test is racist and the kids have a right to rebel. When the system reaches a certain point on the road to serfdom, a work slowdown is the moral thing to do.
I'm a little surprised by this. For a long time the mantra has been "let the professionals handle it" and goo-goo good government types always express horror at the thought of common citizens taking any sort of action on anything.
Exactly and now that the official message has sunk end the ramifications are starting to come into effect.
It's really mean of you to take them seriously when they fake competence.
"We don't come to work to get assaulted, and if we're not going to be backed up in what we're doing then what is the point?"
Don't say that: next thing you know, the right to bear arms in defense against a tyrannical government makes sense.
You've disarmed the people and done everything in your power to discourage self-defense. Now you're complaining they won't help you do the job you insist only you are qualified to accomplish? You can fuck right off..
Well put. ^
Logged in to comment but PeteRR already said it better. Great quote.
Yes, Amen, brother, preach it!
Agreeing very much.
This is what I came to say.
Britons aren't allowed to defend themselves, but they're required to defend cops?
Strange logic, isn't it? When, a long time ago, I lived in NY and was denied the right to carry, I would have run away from aiding an armed "Law Enforcement Officer" under attack!
