Criticize Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Her Socialist Views, Not Her Struggle to Find Affordable Housing in D.C.
This problem should inspire sympathy, not scorn.

A New York Times profile of newly elected Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez noted that the young democratic socialist was having some trouble finding an apartment in Washington, D.C.
"I have three months without a salary before I'm a member of Congress," said Ocasio-Cortez. "So, how do I get an apartment? Those little things are very real."
This comment was the hook for an odd segment on Fox News; the panelists sort of seemed to be mocking her while simultaneously agreeing that D.C. is unaffordable for renters. It sounded like they really wanted to accuse Ocasio-Cortez of hypocrisy, but there's nothing hypocritical about being a socialist who is poor.
Their callousness gave Ocasio-Cortez an opening.
"40% of ALL Americans currently struggle to pay for one basic need like food or rent," she tweeted. "The real scandal is that at the wealthiest point in our history, we are at one of our most unequal. Most Americans are barely scraping by."
As in other major cities, D.C.'s housing issues are partly the fault of government policy: most notably, zoning laws that make it difficult to build new apartment buildings. The city council even moved to restrict Airbnb type arrangements—the exact kind of short-term housing Ocasio-Cortez is currently in need of—to appease residents who are fixated on the downside of greater density (i.e., having more neighbors who occasonally make noise).
The free market could help alleviate housing shortages in D.C. and elsewhere, if only government would get out of the way. It's perfectly appropriate to criticize the kinds of anti-market policy prescriptions a socialist like Ocasio-Cortez is likely to recommend. But let's not beat up on her for failing to have as much access to wealth as the average member of Congress. This problem should inspire sympathy, not scorn.

We criticize her because:
1. She's a socialist
2. She's dumb as a box of rocks.
Do we need any other reasons?
Yep. Fuck this bitch. Possibly standing from behind, roughly.
What is wrong with you?
With a handle like yours, your reaction id very odd. She may be a socialist moron, but she's got a tight little figure and probably fucks like a wildcat in heat.
Has no one ever warned you not to stick your dick in crazy?
I mean, do you have any idea where she's been, or how many objects of what kind have gone into which of her orifices how many times by now?
All whores are dangerous, but Democrat whores can give you diseases with names you've never even heard before.
With those teeth, best to avoid blowjobs.
Hetero,
Last of the Shitferbrains pollutes nearly every thread with his Contard drivel. You'll have to excuse him, though. He's got Trump's cock shoved up his ass so far it affects his thinking.
No Yards Penalty....
THANK GOD.....we have YOU to elevate the discourse here on the comment boards...ya fuckhead...
(just trying to contribute)

NYP,
Your self-awareness meter is reading zero, Leftard-drivel-spewing thread-polluting Commie with your tongue up Nancy Pelosi's bung.
@Last of the Shitlords: Are you advocating rape?
Right, that's the point.
No, actually, it wasn't.
The command economy views she espouses are at the heart of the high housing prices. So, fuck her.
Never stick your dick in crazy.
When better Americans note that Trump's ardent supporters tend to be gullible, half-educated, ignorant, and backward, most wingnuts object.
Oh, look. It's the Rev with a non-sequitur.
I'm not a Trump supporter. Thanks for playing.
Your side voted for a waitress who said "unemployment is low because everyone has two jobs". She's essentially the Christine O'donnell of the left. An economic degree is not an indication of education or enlightenment.
You think borderline illiterate kids in the inner city are Trump fans?
You're arguing with a known moron.
Christine O'Donnell is far more intelligent than this dumb bitch.
The problem with Ocasio-Cortez is that her forest management is so poor.
Is she not trimming the hedges?
Some of us like that. I dated a girl called Muffy. It was an accurate description.
And yet she's going to be a representative for several hundred thousand people and you're going to be here in the comment section of Reason. Hmmmmm.
I'm not sure what you think that proves socko.
It proves that the idiots in her district would have voted for a pet rock if it were on the ballot as a Democrat.
A pet rock on the ballot would be preferable to having just about any Democrat in power.
Difficult as it may be for her to find affordable housing now, if D.C. will only enact some more rent control the way she doubtless desires, it'll be downright impossible!
Interviewer: "What's your plan for paying for College for All and Universal Health Care rent in DC?"
Cortez: "We just do!"
Amazingly she has a degree in economics. Must have been one of those liberal participation award type degrees.
Also, because as a Congress member she'd be in a position to protect private property rights in DC - allowing development, allowing short-term rentals, etc.
So it would be a good opening for someone with policy knowledge to say - "good thing she's in a position to address the anti-market policies which increase housing costs for people in her position." Something snarky like that.
(But...but DC Home Rule!)
"She'll let everyone else in D. C. engage in rent-seeking - why not landlords and homeowners?"
They already get to rent-seek. Effective prop tax rates are:
roughly 0.60% in DC
roughly 1.00% in both Fairfax and Arlington County VA
roughly 1.00% in Montgomery County MD
roughly 1.40% in Prince George's County MD
No surprise the most affordable housing is in Prince George's County (avg house price $250k v $450K+ in the other 4 - and rentals are cheaper too). While DC housing gets to be both a tax shelter on appreciation and doesn't have to pay for as much of the infrastructure spending that increases that value.
Of course Reason still keep spouting the nonsense that it is always about the regulations rather than the tax structure - because marginalist economics doesn't consider land as a separate factor so it doesn't understand the difference between taxes on land v taxes on labor/capital
I'm not sure I understand. What is your explanation as to why there is more affordable housing in the high tax areas?
Higher taxes on land drives down the price of land. It also makes it more expensive to keep it idle/vacant waiting to speculate on increased location value in future so more land is made available for development.
Higher taxes on labor/capital drives up the price of labor/capital and can distort them
Prop taxes are a combo of tax on land and on the property capital. But around cities, the land/location component is actually a LOT higher than people think looking at their prop tax assessments (which assume land is just a residual and that capital is always valued at replacement value rather than actual value). So assuming no huge distortions in the prop tax structure, a higher/lower effective prop tax mostly accrues to the land component.
DC's a good case study cuz there's 3 jurisdictions around one city. The best solution for creating affordable housing in DC (same with CA and NYC) would be jack up prop tax and offset that by reducing income/sales tax there. Older suboptimal land would come onto market which would make it easier/cheaper to assemble a parcel for redevelopment.
Prince Georges is more affordable than Montgomery, Fairfax and Arlington Counties because they have higher crime and poorer school systems.
Poor schools and high crime due to higher taxes? Probably the opposite. People willing to throw more money at cops and schools because crime up, schools bad.
I don't know the circumstances of Prince Georges, but where I live the poorer towns do in fact have higher tax rates, in an attempt to keep up revenues as property values fall.
allowing development, allowing short-term rentals, etc.
Allowing a building to be build taller than 130 feet.
Hey policy is going to be... "It's hard to be a congressman. Give me free shit, like rent and food and hair dids".
Or do what the rest of the poor free world does. Get a roommate.
I would also guess that living expenses in DC have something to do with the high population of bureaucrats, congressional hangers-on, lobbyists, etc. all looking for housing.
A problem she's probably not going to solve, to put it mildly.
If a panel of Fox people couldn't get milage out of her predicament, they should turn in their Fox commenter cards.
Sad.
The irony that private individuals, who would love to build more condensed housing, can't, because of flaming pieces of shit like her, escapes both sides.
...the high population of grossly overpaid bureaucrats, congressional hangers-on, lobbyists, etc...
Idiotic article written by an idiot.
Hey. Robby works very hard at being a useful idiot. You should have more sympathy for him.
He's just pointing out what stupid petty fucks the "journalists" on Fox are. Rather than talking about real news they pick on someone because they're poor. That's some pretty shitty journalism no matter how you slice it. So he is dead on right, and you are yet once again wrong.
Oh my god shreek shut the fuck up.
Somehow I'm sure the little dummy congresschick will be fine. Unlike the future victims of the policies she advocates.
Yeah this policy she advocates seems pretty scary: "a vision of a humane international social order based both on democratic planning and market mechanisms to achieve equitable distribution of resources, meaningful work, a healthy environment, sustainable growth, gender and racial equality, and non-oppressive relationships."
At least Robby is a useful Idiot. If you put in the effort that he does, you might be able to rise to the level of complete moron. Unfortunately, you just don't have his work ethic.
Petty... like the Democrats in Congress saying a 1000 dollar tax break is bread crumbs?
I have to agree. Robby's argument is that the "callousness" of discounting the inability of the poor to afford rent gives "her an opening". It's hard to argue Ocasio-Cortez can't afford 3 months of rent when she'll have a salary of $170,000+ plus some expenses, or that she's poor at this point. 731 apartments are available for $1,700/month in DC per Trulia.com. I'll bet she'll find it easy to go to a bank and borrow 4 months of rent plus expenses to move there.
Besides, since when has it become hard to argue that socialism fails? What Robby does get right is that government does contribute to housing shortages via its policies. He might add that socialist policies make it even worse.
So, are they going to put her on the Commerce Committee, or on the Subcommittee for naming Post Offices?
If she becomes the Democrats' Steve King, that will be just one more reason educated, reasoning, accomplished, socially successful, decent people want nothing to do with the Republican Party.
This is even more incomprehensible than usual, congratulations.
The NPC hicklib needs a reboot so his programming macro kicks back in.
Someone needs to take away your commas so you can take a shot at formulating a point instead of a list.
Educated =/= intelligent.
For example, look in the mirror.
How are all those educated, reasoning, accomplished, socially successful, decent inner-city people doing? How are they doing in Chicago? Or Camden? Or the ones that riot and set fires when their feelings are hurt or they don't like who is coming to their campus? Or do you overlook the flaws in people when they vote for the same trash that you vote for? If you want someone to blame for Trump, blame the life-long Democrats that voted for him.
Come on, Robby. The very tweet where you quoted her in the article is rife with inaccuracies. That alone desire or ire and ridicule. I guess we can only make fun of tweets from Trump though, left we not be invited to parties.
Deserves our, not desire. And later it should be lest not left.
I wish there was an edit button.
And I wish they had real libertarian writers. Neither of those things is likely to happen.
You're free to start you own libertarian site, and yet here you are bitching on one instead.
And you're bitching about him bitching. Well done lololol
Is Wise Old Fool Hihn, PB, or AmSoc?
Looks like PB.
You're probably right. A,Soc is wordier, and Hihn is just insane. Plus I haven't seen much of Hihn lately. Maybe he is finally getting the help he needs.
Bullets are cheap.
Are you pretending to be a libertarian, Last of the Shitferbrains.
That fauxbertarian shtick might work over at The Federalist, but not here.
If you'd learn to proofread your posts BEFORE you make them, rather than typing as quickly as possible the moment you have a knee-jerk reaction, maybe you wouldn't make so many mistakes, and you wouldn't need an edit button.
Just a thought.
Maybe it's the thought that matters and not the facial mistakes from typing on a phone that do. But you stay with your priorities.
If I had a nickel for every facial "mistake" I've made...
Sometimes you just have to take your best shot.
But if the thought gets mangled because you can't be bothered taking the extra few minutes to do it properly, then you risk making your oh-so-important ideas incomprehensible.
We'd probably all be better off if accuracy and thoughtfulness were not so often ignored in the rush to publish, whether it be in the comments section of Reason, or in the media more generally.
What was mangled by it? It was pretty obvious what the intent of his statement was. Maybe if you said which part confused you, we can try to simplify thoughts next time for you.
Or they could just include an edit button.
Just a thought.
I'm so sorry that on my tiny little mobile screen that I am less than perfect as I use a even more tiny keyboard. Heaven forbid I ask that the technology we are using grants a little leeway to combat or human nature.
But attack me even though no one was attacked in that passage.
Indeed, this Drumpf economy is absolutely terrible. Of course the solution to poverty and economic inequality is simple ? more immigration. But the white nationalists currently running the show won't allow it. So expect the economy to continue sucking, just like Paul Krugman predicted, until Democrats are back in the White House.
#DrumpfRecession
#LibertariansForOcasioCortez
Not one of your best posts. Needs something about more stimulus or something.
She's lucky NY didn't elect her Senator too. She'd be forced two work 2 jobs to keep the unemployment numbers down. Hopefully her first submitted legislation will be government provided food, rent, transportation, makeup and shoes for the single gals. That'll free up 40% of Americans to afford tats and Carribean trips.
More about deficit spending being the RIGHT kind of deficit spending is needed. Because we all know only one side of the ledger, the "revenue" side, is up for debate.
Maybe she shouldn't have quit her day job....
Maybe she could write a short book about the problems she's facing. She could call it "My Struggle".
Like a first-term congresswoman could afford to buy enough crayons to write a book.
"The audacity of (being) broke"
It's SOP for SJW's and the left. Intentionally put yourself in the poor house and then run around telling everyone why you should be given money for your "struggles."
Get a STEM degree and/or start your own damn company. Lazy fucking commies.
She almost certainly has campaign funds left over too.
jasa print kain & jasa cetak kain.
From what I understand, some of her former co-workers disagree with you.
"This problem should inspire sympathy, not scorn."
Not sure I can agree with that. While I have sympathy for people who can't find affordable housing as a whole, her support of socialist solutions to housing shortages helped create the problem in the first place. And, once she gets hers, she will push for policies that will make it harder for the next person to find affordable housing. I for one find it hard not to scorn that.
There's this thing called "concern trollling", and Robby seems to be an expert.
I don't understand why we can't make fun of someone for speaking out of both sides of their mouths.
BREAKING: Socialist complains about socialist policies, but be nice
"Socialist politician complains that socialist policies aren't doing enough for her personally."
Yeah, we're going to get a lot of mileage out of how dumb she is. Despite this, she'll have to do something blatantly criminal to avoid being re-elected for the next decade.
"...to avoid being re-elected for the next decade."
Yup, and I'm sure she will still be struggling to afford the most modest of residences when she leaves office too. Most politicians seem to struggle to make ends meet when they retire. Hell, the Clinton's had to borrow money from a friend to afford a place. Otherwise they would have been couch surfing don't you know. What sacrifices these progressives politicians make to stand up for the little guy.
That's because she'll be giving 90% of her income to the poor.
I'm sure. She's gonna crash on one of Bernie's couches, in one of his homes to save even more. I heard she thought about proposing a cut in congressional pay and allowances too. But, then she remembered she was donating it to the poor and they wouldn't get as much if she did that.
Comrade, surely you don't begrudge our selfless leaders their modest dachas? This is not the greedy personal enrichment of grubby capitalists. Such things serve merely to ease the burdens of those who serve The People's interests.
LOL. Great writing. Makes me want to go pull an old Clancy novel off the shelf.
I love him! Clancy at his best was a formidably engaging author. When I was a kid in college, I casually picked up a book belonging to my uncle in my grandmother's living room to read the back of the jacket. He didn't get it back again for another ten hours when I finally finished it the next morning. It was called The Hunt For Red October. I've been a Clancy fanboy ever since.
"Despite this, she'll have to do something blatantly criminal to avoid being re-elected for the next decade."
Menendez
There's everything to mock about a poor socialist, since socialism is all about stealing from the populace in general. A rich socialist is a hypocrite for remaining rich; a poor socialist is just a socialist. All socialists are hypocrites, just for different reasons.
And there's the typical socialist lies, coming from someone who is not poor and will have no problem finding an apartment in DC; all landlords know damn well that Congress Critters make enough to pay the rent.
Do you think landlords will let her live free until she gets her first Congressional paycheck in January (or is it March)? She could probably take out a loan to cover her immediate expenses, and repay it when she gets paid, but the interest rate may be steep.
You... don't think the DNC will just front it? Or a lobbyist?
Depends on her committee assignment, I suppose.
If it's the Committee on Cleaning Statuary, then no.
If it's Commerce, then they'll not only give her a loan, they'll "forget" to ask for it back.
She almost certainly has campaign funds left over too.
Soros will kick in to take care of his Useful Idiots.
Well he is one of her new owners.
SOROS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Keep shitting your pants, Contard hillbillies.
"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11"
Tara Gilesbie?
How many accounts do you have? And why don't you have a better hobby?
Landlords will rent to her as they do to all other new Congress Critters. She is nothing special. Just as 200+ years of incoming new Congress Critters have found and paid for rooms, so will she.
But the Kavanaugh hearings show us that anyone who goes into debt, even if they pay it off, is not to be trusted (or so say the Democrats).
There's not much she actually needs to be doing in D.C. at the moment. Staff search can happen from Brooklyn. Not sure why you think she has to have two places of residence at this point in time. And let's be honest, she's not going to choose her own staff, the billionaires who bought and paid for her will.
"There's nothing hypocritical about being a socialist who is poor"
There's something deeply hypocritical about a socialist politician who wants to implement an economic system that will make us poor.
Where is Just Sayin' when you need a good "be nice to socialists" rant?
Why is anyone here nice to any socialist? I mean Tony's a moron, so I get, it but at least he's not a writer on this site
"There's everything to mock about a poor socialist, since socialism is all about stealing from the populace in general."
Venezuela is full of poor socialists. They deserved to be mocked and scrutinized. The world doesn't give a fuck about your feelings.
There is not enough Dulcolax on the face of the earth to make me give a shit about a newly elected member of the House of Representatives who claims to be unable to figure out how to find a place to live in DC.
Why do I have a feeling that she's having a problem finding an apartment that she feels she "deserves"?
You know, modern, multiple bedrooms, stainless steel, in the best part of town.
Could she get some roommates?
Sounds like a great basis for a new dumb-ass reality show! I'm sure some idiot TV producer will be all over this idea.
God help us all.
For somebody who doesn't have any income, a cardboard box beside the dumpster behind the 7-11 is what's affordable and I'm pretty sure there's no acute shortage of cardboard boxes or dumpsters in DC. Are politicians also working on the problem of affordable Lear jets and affordable Rolls Royces and affordable 90-foot yachts? Because I sure as hell haven't been able to find any of those that I can afford, I have to fly commercial, drive a Ford Taurus and settle for a 14-foot jon boat with a 15 horse motor on it.
Her hundred thousand dollar closet should clue you in that having no income isn't a problem for her.
Those old things? Cast-offs donated by Tom Steyer's wife out of pity for a young, needy idealist.
It is possible to strive for false balance, and Robby seems to be an expert.
She left off "...in cities that are run and have been run by Progressives for years now".
Probably just an oversight.
And it's not true. Surely the most unequal time in terms of wealth was the early 19th century prior to the civil war.
The bigoted Republicans in Congress prevent the District of Columbia's residents from running the District of Columbia, you half-educated, disaffected slackjaw.
They utterly shat the bed when allowed to govern the city. They're lucky they are allowed to wield a piece of string in that shithole to end all shitholes.
Just odd how bad inequality is in places that are overwhelmingly Democrat...ain't it?
Which has noting to do with awful hellholes like Baltimore, NYC, Chicago, etc..
"I have three months without a salary before I'm a member of Congress," said Ocasio-Cortez. "So, how do I get an apartment? Those little things are very real."
So- you're announcing to the world that you applied for a job that requires relocation and when you got the job, you hadn't yet figured out how to manage that task?
Woman, you're too fucking stupid to be in charge of your own life, let alone making decisions for others.
Bingo.
+10
Savings?
A young idiot being in this position isn't as scary as all of the people who voted for her. If this is the best decision they could make, no wonder they're all fucked.
AND 98.69423% of all statistics are pulled directly from someone's ass.
If going to work counts as "struggle" then I would hope more than 40% are "struggling" to pay their bills.
Cite?
there's nothing hypocritical about being a socialist who is poor
What if it was socialism that made them poor?
Not criticizing her for having trouble affording housing in DC, mocking her. There's a difference.
Mocking her for it, because the kinds of economic policies she supports are a large part of why housing in DC and elsewhere is so expensive.
Ocasio-Cortez complaining about housing costs in DC is like someone who kills their parents asking for sympathy and mercy because they are now an orphan.
Menendez bros.
I found this footage of Occasional-Cortex at an early press conference:
Press Conference
Well here's her Victory speech.
Why do we have to explain this to you, reason?
I live in the Bay Area and have no sympathy for those who vote for economically illiterate ideas, then complain about the consequences.
You are free to move to an uneducated, yahoo-filled, Bible-thumping, can't-keep-up southern and/or rural backwater if you genuinely believe conservative-controlled communities are more attractive, you bigoted rube.
Still clinging, still barking, still incoherent.
At least those communities are free. Which they would not be under the socialist slaver yoke of you and your friends.
I absolutely love that everyone that doesn't ascribe to every minute detail of your philosophy is bigoted, uneducated, racist, incest loving, bigoted, Christian, racist, yahoo filled (whatever that means), bigoted, conservative, racist, and bigoted. It's almost as if you are devoid of any ability to be tolerant or see something from another perspective. No, it's exactly like that.
By the way, Hinh Jr, how do I get to be on your crazy list? I want to be there. I'll wear it as a badge of honor.
Also, are you still participating in Trump Group Screaming? Are they working yet? There are still two years left. I bet they'll work eventually.
Robby, your closing paragraph is a masterpiece of self contradictory stupidity.
Not to worry, though. Her cash flow crisis will be very temporary, and she'll be stealing the country's producers blind in no time. She doesn't need your sympathy or anyone else's. She and her ilk need only obedience, and you are falling all over yourself to give them yours.
As a useful idiot, you constantly outdo yourself.
He points out that it's her own fault that she and others are in this situation by supporting the laws that make housing unaffordable so why is Robby trying to turn this around on us?
After what everyone on H&R said about his hair?
I mostly agree, and maybe there should be some help along those lines for those transitioning to the job (I know they do a lot already, but I'm not aware of this specific kind of help).
That said, I'd have more sympathy if she wasn't being treated like the first person to be afflicted with this problem. How many Republicans have gotten criticized by Dems for sleeping in their offices? Also, she's not exactly aware of why the housing problem exists in the first place, so her cry me a river routine doesn't play as well as she hopes.
Maybe Nancy Pelosi could show us all how big her liberal heart is and put up three months' rent?
"Maybe Nancy Pelosi could show us all how big her liberal heart is and put up three months' rent?"
It's as good a place to start as any, I think....
Could you imagine renting an apartment from Nancy Pelosi? She'd refuse to give you any details about the apartment or probably even tell you where it's located until after you signed a lease. She'd say you have to sign it to find out what's in it.
Nice.
Someone who is:
1. an economically illiterate socialist (but I repeat myself)
and
2. takes a job with power over others
doesn't deserve my sympathy. They deserve nothing but my contempt.
Thanks for electing Senator Kyrsten Sinema, Arizona Guy!
It addressed me by name. The AI is improving.
But it forgot to call you a bigot this time.
"The real scandal is that at the wealthiest point in our history, we are at one of our most unequal."
Irrelevant.
"Most Americans are barely scraping by."
Bullshit.
I'll bet she could get a room at the Venezuelan Embassy for three months.
Oh I'm marching

As a socialist, she wants to find space for ghettos for whatever undesirable group there is.
Since she is Puerto Rican or Latin, its the black folks. Hispanics hate the blacks and vice versa.
Since she not actually a Congressperson yet can't she just do a Go Fund Me? She'd be a millionaire in a couple if hours.
No decent person would work for Fox News. It's much like being a drug warrior -- if you hold that job for any reason other than a need to feed children while you spend all of your free time searching for a decent livelihood, you're a lousy, deplorable person.
It is a scant surprise that the class of people willing to work the "No. 1 With Racists" shift would have the character consistent with mocking a better person for forgetting to be born to rich white parents.
Carry on, clingers.
NPC Hicklib's desperately trying to convince his betters that he's not an 85 IQ hayseed.
85? That seems high.
a hayseed who dropped out of high school and empties his conservative boss's trash.
Right, she was born to rich brown parents.
"Faux News! Racist! Uneducated! Bitter clingers!"
NPC confirmed.
It's like Rev is a huge Oprah fan. Handing out racists under everyone's chairs! For free!
She just got a job that pays more per annum than the entire principal of my mortgage, and she's got the gall to complain about making rent?
Send not to know for whom the world's smallest violin plays; it plays for thee.
This problem should inspire sympathy, not scorn.
You're conflating two different objects of sympathy and scorn. Nobody's laughing about the problem of finding affordable housing in Washington DC, we're all sympathetic to that issue. We're laughing at who's suffering from the problem because it's somebody we have zero sympathy for. Hitler blew his brains out in a bunker at the end of WWII, are you going to scold the people who applauded his suicide for being insensitive to the seriousness of mental health issues? Nobody was applauding suicide in general, they were applauding specifically Hitler's death. Context, man, context.
Upvoted for the astute observation.
I, for one, am laughing about the problem of finding "affordable" housing in DC. 21% of the GDP of the richest country in human history funnels into that place and is redistributed from there. People get rich by being present as that money changes hands and grabbing some of it on its way back out. It is one of the richest places in the wealthiest nation. Why expect anything to be "affordable" in an Imperial capital?
Am I the only one that gets a picture in their head of the Death Star with this comment?
I don't always agree with Jerryskids, but he is spot on here.
Excuse me, but what sympathy? She champions the various causes of skyrocketing housing cost. Sanders endorsed prop 10, which was radical that even CA voters rejected it. She's getting a taste of her own medicine.
If she never ran in any election (the win gets you a hefty salary and lifetime pension) she wouldn't have to worry about housing cost in Washington.
How many other new members of the house or senate would have this much trouble paying for their relocation? Cortez is a former waitress whose economic degree failed to translate to a stable career. She has no discernible skills, no management experience, and her only experience in government is a brief internship under Ted Kennedy. She has a tenuous grasp of even the basics of economy and government. She obviously had close to zero financial stability before the election.
THIS is the person a district in New York felt was competent enough to represent her. She's essentially a Twitter troll who'll parrot every lefty talking point like "we should go back to the 90% tax rate on the rich" and now she has clout in government. America would be halfway to Canada if the left could run government on just the popular vote.
Worlds smallest violin is playing. Forgive me for having no sympathy over her inability to currently move into an affluent area. Once in office, and making bank on the tax-payers dime while pushing insane policies that would lead to further increase in prices, she will be able to afford it. Screw this crazy commie.
"But let's not beat up on her for failing to have as much access to wealth as the average member of Congress."
Nobody's beating up on her for that. She's getting beaten up on for being so incredibly clueless that she apparently never even considered what would be involved in moving to DC if she somehow found herself elected. And for being stupid enough to share that fact with the whole world.
Lol.
So now we know what two degrees, one in Economics no less, from Boston College are worth. Can't even figure out how to change 'jobs'.
Remind me again, are there no coffee shops in DC?
" Most Americans are barely scraping by."
B.S. Anecdotal evidence from recent 9 day road trip in fly-over country: all the mid price chain restaurants were packed. Families, many speaking Spanish, were loading up on food and drink. All the adults and kids had expensive cell phones. Looks hardly like "scraping by" to me.
Usually when someone complains like this what they mean is they can't afford a one bedroom in a nice area close to work. I don't believe she has absolutely no means to move to DC. She'll just have to do what the rest of us do when first moving to a new city: stay with friends/family for a while, share an apartment off of Craig's list and/or stay far from the city. Just because she's in government doesn't mean she shouldn't live like the rest of us.
People go into government so that they don't have to live like the rest of us.
As she is making blatantly clear.
174K puts her in the top 5%.
Which is the whole point for her and every other progtard. Everything else is just words.
"Their callousness gave Ocasio-Cortez an opening."
And she wasted it by making up a bunch of shit. "40% of ALL Americans currently struggle to pay for one basic need like food or rent" and "Most Americans are barely scraping by."
Really? Sounds horrible. I suppose that's why so many people are renouncing their citizenship and leaving the US for more affordable locations- wait...no. That's not happening is it? What *is* happening is that people from all around the world want to come here, presumably, to get away from having to struggle to scrape by in their home countries.
Great point.
Why are people coming here, risking life and limb, to be in such squalor? It's almost as if this a great place to live and be free, and this is simply just a bitch whining like a bitch.
Great job defending her Robby, I'm sure you'll get a nice pat on the back at the next cocktail party.
In the name of no fake news, Mr. Soave should at least provide a cite for the "40%" figure, if he's going to quote it.
Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
A citation aahahahahahahahahah
From fruit sushit lololololololllollol
This is Reason, they're pretty consistent in being part of the problem. Hell, they even made Kav an alleged rapist before it was cool. They didn't even need a witness for that one.
But Robby did publish an article two weeks after the vote, basically parroting everything we've all been saying since the first allegation
So the bitch has no job and no income, and can't pay rent. But she has expectations of a cushy government monthly check. And she is whining about not having any other current assistance available until then.
Occasional Cortex is SO the symbol of the Progressive Movement.
And 1 interview on Meet The Press will cover her first month's rent.
Please show some sympathy for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She's a woman of wealth, and taste....
I guess she's already introduced herself.
She killed the Kennedy's? She hadn't yet been born in that crossfire hurricane.
I hear there's some newly available and affordable housing in Puerto Rico if this saltwater commie wants to return to her roots.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won with 79% of the vote. Upon hearing this, she replied, "that's only a C+, but still a passing grade!"
Why don't we just build a giant dormitory (or better yet, a barracks) for all the Congress critters to live in while they are in Washington? Sure, it would be a hardship for them not to be able to have their families with them, but maybe that would encourage them to spend more time in their home districts.
Texas is way ahead of Congress - providing one of its legislators with free housing.
LoL!
This is the modern left.
When I was arrested, I didn't have a dime
The sheriff said "Son, you're ridin' free this time.
Where you're goin' you won't need a cent,
'Cause the great state of Texas's gonna pay your rent."
"'Cause where you're goin'," ("I think he means jail.")
"You won't need a cent." ("Well, he knows I'm broke.")
"'Cause the great state of Texas's" ("Yippee.")
"Gonna pay your rent." ("I'm mighty grateful, fellers.")
Why do the critters have to go to Washington at all? There's this thing called the internet which would allow them to stay in touch with the other critters, should that be necessary. That way, they could stay home and, you know, maybe actually talk to the people they represent now and again. The government would pay for an office for them, with posted, regular hours that they will be expected to keep in case any of their constituents have a need to contact them. About representation, of course. Which is why they wanted the office in the first place. Right?
Perhaps they could take a short break (couple weeks?) from their "REAL J-O-Bs" to do the nation's business and use this inter-thingy to save on airfare?
Better hookers
Building a giant dormitory for Congress people is a great idea! Each one could have their own little bedroom, with a small desk built into the wall, a sink, and a toilet right nearby. (Very convenient for when you need to pee at 4am.)
They could be locked in there, for their own safety of course, except for meal times and one hour of daily exercise.
It's time we recognized our political leaders for what they actually are!
The source is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; don't you remember we have to always believe the woman?
But does she support the kind of policies that contribute to the hight cost of housing?
Only for you, not for her (example; how many congress-critters are on Obamacare?)
I don't know how to do this, but is there a way to get the left to try to run this woman as a presidential candidate despite the fact that she would not be of age in 2020?
If they believe that the nationwide "popular" vote has meaning in senatorial races and that Gerrymandering is a thing in senate races and they've shown no hesitation in being willing to eliminate the Electoral College, the Senate and the Supreme Court they should be perfectly willing to ignore the qualifications for a candidate for President.
The entertainment value of this would be immense.
Hey, if we paid attention to qualifications, we'd never have a President.
/America.
1. US citizen
2. 35 years old.
3. There is no three.
So both Trump and whats-her-name were equally qualified.
Incompetent, but qualified.
You can *run* as a Presidential candidate without needing to meet the requirements. You can even get on the Ballot. One of the (many) socialist parties once ran a candidate pair where one wasn't a citizen and the other two young.
Wait, she quit her other job *THREE MONTHS EARLY*? So, she's an exceptional moron. A true wunderkind.
Gave her an opening to flat out lie, I guess. Even if the above were true, it would be true *before you take into consideration the things we do to alleviate poverty*. Soave? Are you paying attention or are you looking at pictures o the crazy hot chick again?
"Gave her an opening to flat out lie"
Well she is a politician.
She's got to move to DC and get started on her new job, doncha know.
I suspect there are all kinds of networking events etc that she needs to attend.
All of which involve people writing checks. (or forgetting to take home to bag of cash they brought)
So the Saturday article is about the commie?
And not about the extremely obvious attempts to commit ballot fraud?
Reason's going to ignore that, huh?
Because there's nothing more libertarian than manufactured votes--as long as it's Democrats doing the manufacturing, amirite?
Well, you were all big on the 'don't vote' train. Guess we can see why now.
I will defend Reason here - they're not really investigative reporters. There's nothing for them to report on that wouldn't either be accepting that this is fraud happening or denying its fraud happening. With no evidence to back it up either way (right now).
What are they going to write? 'Hey, there might be something hinky going on down in Broward; or there might not'?
The woman overseeing the counting has already been busted for ballot tampering. Tried and convicted.
That's a whole truckload of red flags right there.
And yet, somehow, re-elected to the post.
Agammamon|11.10.18 @ 10:52PM|#
"I will defend Reason here - they're not really investigative reporters. There's nothing for them to report on that wouldn't either be accepting that this is fraud happening or denying its fraud happening. With no evidence to back it up either way (right now)."
Took me two reads of your comment, but I agree: If you have no specific information and you have no supporting evidence for the general BS floating about, you have nothing to report.
Are you anti-capitalism? Without posting stuff that has no reliable, verifiable, cited sources, how in hell will Reason sell ads?
Make stuff up and post; there are probably doctoral degrees in how to manufacture headlines from total fluff.
"Democrats, after crying about Russian election meddling for two years, openly meddle in election"
"That's different".
They are in resistance, so it's OK. Now if it was in a Republican county, it would be grounds to impeach Trump.
You know, it may be grounds to impeach Trump anyway.
It really is all about TDS. Still no article about the election disaster. Curious why
AOC should inspire nothing but contempt.
She's not required to take the job.
She's too young, and probably has not studied politics at the functional level in any event, to understand that she is going to become very, very rich through the use of her position and that these few months will not even be a major memory for her in a few years. Provided she is able to win reelection of course.
People younger than her are making life-or-death decisions in places like Afghanistan right now, and I sure hope they're a cut above her in experience and intelligence.
They aren't.
"Provided she is able to win reelection of course."
Irrelevant.
Once she is within the 'protected class', she no longer has to worry about those things that concern most of us. Pretty sure her medical care is now guaranteed for life and any concern about retirement is not hers.
Screw her with the asshole's dick for whining.
Bernie Sanders' largest campaign donors are largely owned & thus controlled by the same largest institutional shareholders as the other establishment politicians.
Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, IBM are among the largest contributors of B Sanders.
The largest money-management firms are the largest institutional shareholders of each, along with being the largest institutional shareholders of most of the remaining largest "competing" corporations".
? Corporations owned by these firms are among the largest political campaign donors, to politicians from both the "left" and "right" (even their "fringe" elements like the "Libertarians" and "Progressives").
? Corporations owned by these firms are among the largest spenders on lobbying activities, to politicians & bureaucrats of both the "left" and "right".
? Not surprisingly, corporations owned by these firms are also among the largest recipients of the over $110 BILLION given away ANNUALLY by the government in the form of corporate subsidies.
Politics is a sham.
"Partisan" politics is propaganda.
Those wealthy elite, the .001 percent, have the combined TRILLIONS in personal and corporate backing to make or break ANY politician.
ANY politician that becomes a true threat to the true ruling elite will be destroyed (literally or politically).
"Liberal" icon Al Gore was awarded with hundreds of millions in net worth for complying with the system, in conceding to Bush, whom also was a mere puppet in the system.
"Even despots accept the excellence of liberty. The simple truth is that they wish to keep it for themselves and promote the idea that no one else is at all worthy of it."
"The last thing abandoned by a party is its phraseology, because among political parties, as elsewhere, the vulgar make the language, and the vulgar abandon more easily the ideas that have been instilled into it than the words that it has learnt."
"A democratic government is the only one in which those who vote for a tax can escape the obligation to pay it."
"The surface of American society is covered with a layer of democratic paint, but from time to time one can see the old aristocratic colours breaking through."
-Alexis de Tocqueville-
Are you saying a degree in economics, AND a degree in international relations from Boston College did not impart that information? You truly believe she ran due to deep feelings of patriotism, with no regard for the vast fortunes made?
Maybe a certain political party with a dead certain district wanted to virtue signal, and to set up a youngster to pile up seniority and become the next Nancy Pelosi.
They get an office. She can sleep in it. She would not be the first
Maybe somebody should tell her. And then, she could invite some of those people struggling to pay their rent to stay there with her.
Apparently they're not allowed to any more. Seriously - seems like so many of these guys have been sleeping at the office (despite having homes there) that they had to make rules forbidding it.
https://nypost.com/2018/05 /01/these-politicians-are-sleeping -in-their-dc-offices-to-save-money/
https://www.congress.gov/bill/ 115th-congress/house-bill/5845/text
Can't she just borrow against the millions of dollars of future book deal royalties that she is bound to earn?
The reason they're mocking her?I thought, anyway?is because it's the very socialist policies that she supports that make housing scarce and unaffordable for so many people. Rent controls, government regulations, property taxes, mass uncontrolled immigration, minimum wage laws?all of these things ultimately make it harder for people to find places to live in crowded major cities run by left-wing politicians. And she supports even more of them. The humor is in the irony.
^This^
Additionally, Ocasio-Cortez was a shoo-in after winning the primary. A few paid speeches and she'd have enough to cover 2 years renting in DC. She had plenty of time to raise cash, and plenty of people willing to give it to her.
Ocasio-Cortez. It's not the heat - it's the stupidity.
Oh brother. This article shows why so many smart people dismiss libertarians the way smart people dismiss stuff like the HARRY POTTER books. You guys have one answer to everything: "the free market will fix it!" But in a place like Washington DC, where everyone wants to live in order to be close to power, the free market won't fix it. There will always be way more rich people who want to live there than there is housing, no matter how free the market is. To say "the free market would enable ordinary people to afford housing in DC" is like saying "the free market would enable ordinary people to own Stradivarius violins!" No, it wouldn't.
Yeah. Their ignorance about this is long running and probably best shown by a piece they published several years ago rhapsodizing about the resilience of the DC area economy when most other places were reeling from the recession. It attributed this to an influx of socially enlightened and professionally ambitious young people rather than, you know, being the imperial capital which demands tribute from the rest of the nation. Really wish I could find it now. It was perversely amusing.
In a free market, there wouldn't be ridiculous building restrictions begin controlled by the wealthy who already control most of the property, the building permits, the codes and the code enforcers. Does it hurt to be that stupid?
Do you always play chess by looking 1 move ahead?
No, you always lose chess by looking (only) one move ahead.
I do not follow you. You can build higher for housing it a matter of revenue over cost in a free market. A Stradivarius is limited because of a fixed for the most part supply therefore only people who can pay a high price can afford it.
So, you're trying to compare objects that are hundreds of years old built by a dead guy, of which there will for obvious reasons never be any more of, to... housing, which can be built pretty easily, if there aren't restrictions on doing so.
OK, then.
More broadly it's a logical fallacy, conflating the particular with the general.
The free market does indeed provide quite inexpensive violins of decent quality.
Much more so than in the days of Stradivarius.
USA growing more then world, Building also a part of housing, Nice post and thanks from https://www.tcswebmaillogin.com/ Keep it up
In a parliamentary system, it doesn't matter if the back benchers are morons. Her votes won't be any different from Pelosi's.
Actually, her vote will become Pelosi's. That the way it is for the Democrats. She votes as told, or two years and out.
I find it hard to believe there aren't a thousand campaign workers and lobbyists willing to let her stay in an extra bedroom. Or extra house.
Surely she understands the concept of servicing one's constituents?
Sympathy for a socialist?
/Looks at REASON masthead on napkin. Is this a libertarian publication or not?
Ocasio-Cortez is an illiterate twit. I'm appalled by not only her absurdly immature views, but that she can't even defend those views with any intellectual agility or competence. It boggles the mind she got elected. She's worse than Trudeau.
Callousness? Is this a joke?
Careful if you use the word 'retard' you may trigger someone. Even if it is being used properly.

In all seriousness, I accused him of concern trolling above, but that was giving him the benefit of the doubt. I doubt there was any intention behind it at all. Robby's not even wearing a mask that can slip. He's a non-libertarian writing about libertarianism like a journalist doesn't need to be a motorcycle to write about motorcycles.
The thing about Weigel was, when the journolist shit was revealed, it only revealed what we already knew. Not only did Weigel not believe the same things we did--he didn't believe that honestly believing the things we did was truly possible. I suspect Robby believes in common sense libertarianism the way that gun grabbers believe in common sense gun control.
It comes across as insincere, but, like I said, that's probably giving it the benefit of the doubt. What if he genuinely believes that he's a real libertarian and the rest of us are full of shit?
I'd be willing to bet it is more of a 'product of environment' scenario. If Robby weren't swimming in a sea of authoritarian commies, he'd probably write and act more libertarian. From his and most likely the vast majority of people he interacts with, he's a flaming conservative libertarian.
His 'issue' seems to be the same one with most of the media, they just don't interact with the plebes.
In a couple of weeks, they're gonna start asking us for money.
"But let's not beat up on her for failing to have as much access to wealth as the average member of Congress. This problem should inspire sympathy, not scorn."
The problem will resolve itself shortly, I expect; I'm sure Bernie can give her some pointers on how a socialist becomes wealthy on a government salary.
The powers that be at Reason must be so proud to know that Robby is down with (at least some of) the struggle.
Libertarian moment!
There's enough money behind her. She won't struggle to find housing. What she will do is exploit her "struggle" to cry for more free housing.
Guess what Reason and Robby Soave, "Socialism" is as idealistic and hypocritical as 'Libertarianism".
The essay "The Authoritarian Personality in the 21st Century" notes that:
"It is not the process by which authority is selected, but the authority itself that needs to be scrutinized".
In a similar theme, it is not the particular economic system (label), but the functions of that systematic economy itself that needs to be scrutinized.
"Capitalism, "Socialism", "Libertarianism", etc. as SYSTEMS can all be corrupted, or systematically manipulated to invoke inequalities, injustice.
The "Free Market" is but an ideology, not a "truth" in and of itself.
All markets are manipulated, if not by the government or central authority, by individuals.
Patent laws are evidence.
Patent laws are enforced by government, at the behest of "capitalists" looking to preserve their own self-interests.
Patent laws are wholly non-Libertarian concepts.
Patent laws are manipulations of the "Free Market" ideals.
Yet patent laws are often sought by those "Libertarian" individuals looking to exploit a market.
Consider this, in order to fully enact true "Libertarian" "Free Market" ideals, one would have to enact other market restrictions, in attempt to try to implement those "Free Market" ideals.
Example - To prevent individuals from engaging in market manipulations, the government (or other authority) would have to restrict those individuals from pursuing market manipulations (an individual seeking to buy all the properties in an area, to manipulate pricing, via supply/demand, would have to be restricted from trying to manipulate that market in order to promote a "free market"), thus true "Libertarianism", in itself is a contradiction - placing restrictions in order to prevent restrictions/manipulations.
"Libertarianism" is a "freedom for me, but not for thee" concept.
That being said, Ocasio-Cortez,via her "Socialistic" ideals is just as much a hypocrite.
She's pursuing her own self-interests in supposed attempt to allow others to pursue theirs.
She's spent over $1 million pursuing her political goals, yet that $1 million could have been used to feed & clothe the homeless/extreme poor.
The inherent problems of "socialism" are very similar to those of "libertarianism".....humans put their wants above the needs of others.
Most everyone values their desires over the desire of others.
I don't think you get the concept.
This is your brain on PoMo.
Hello indeed.
Jello
Fuckin g auto correct.

"Consider this, in order to fully enact true "Libertarian" "Free Market" ideals, one would have to enact other market restrictions, in attempt to try to implement those "Free Market" ideals."
Please note that this asshole has no idea regarding the subject of the post.
We, here, have read such bullshit for years, each one of the ignoramuses hoping to claim some new revelation on how a free market was not so.
And every fucking ignoramus claiming so has yet to provide evidence of that claim.
Hint, asshole: Fuck off.
"What the patent and copyright laws acknowledge is the paramount role of mental effort in the production of material values; these laws protect the mind's contribution in its purest form: the origination of an idea. The subject of patents and copyrights is intellectual property.
An idea as such cannot be protected until it has been given a material form. An invention has to be embodied in a physical model before it can be patented; a story has to be written or printed. But what the patent or copyright protects is not the physical object as such, but the idea which it embodies. By forbidding an unauthorized reproduction of the object, the law declares, in effect, that the physical labor of copying is not the source of the object's value, that that value is created by the originator of the idea and may not be used without his consent; thus the law establishes the property right of a mind to that which it has brought into existence."
"It is important to note, in this connection, that a discovery cannot be patented, only an invention. A scientific or philosophical discovery, which identifies a law of nature, a principle or a fact of reality not previously known, cannot be the exclusive property of the discoverer because: (a) he did not create it, and (b) if he cares to make his discovery public, claiming it to be true, he cannot demand that men continue to pursue or practice falsehoods except by his permission. He can copyright the book in which he presents his discovery and he can demand that his authorship of the discovery be acknowledged, that no other man appropriate or plagiarize the credit for it?but he cannot copyright theoretical knowledge. Patents and copyrights pertain only to the practical application of knowledge, to the creation of a specific object which did not exist in nature?an object which, in the case of patents, may never have existed without its particular originator; and in the case of copyrights, would never have existed.
The government does not "grant" a patent or copyright, in the sense of a gift, privilege, or favor; the government merely secures it?i.e., the government certifies the origination of an idea and protects its owner's exclusive right of use and disposal." - Ayn Rand
A right to property and property in your rights.
Liberty is only hard for people who have no interest in yours.
In a free market, no one would want to live in that swamp.
Socialists like this twit Robby wants us to feel bad for like to eat filet mignon while the rest of society makes do on lesser steak or worse - starves. "We deserve filet mignon because we need to be strong in order to advance The Project!"
And by the way, she'll figure out how to score some coin off the system. They all do.
I intend to do both. She Guevera is a dangerously stupid person and she should be ridiculed as such.
That her end will likely not be as fitting speaks to our providence.
Hey being a socialist political leech worked out for Bernie Sanders. He's getting a little long in tooth though.
We may get lucky and have found a two-fer replacement for him and Maxine Waters.
What happened to "just pay for it"?
Why the Hell not both?
Loads of people live in that area making a lot less than she does, with much stiffer schedules too. She can slug it in from a reasonably priced one-room-in-a-house arrangement. That is IF there is not some fatcat buddy of hers offering sweet digs for nothing.
First rule of Socialist political club: thou shalt not live amongst the plebes in Anacostia.
Of course, then she would need to worry about her safety and Lord knows a dangerous society is only for the proletariat.
She Guevarra apparently has never heard of Zillow.
Boo hoo hoo.
One of the ruling class has to live on their own dime for a few months.
I weep.
I may sell one of my kidneys and send her the proceeds.
as Annie replied I didn't even know that any one able to earn $8091 in four weeks on the
computer . why not check here?
My SO has lived in the DC area for a long time, and even though she never made anything like what a Congressthing makes, she never had trouble finding decent housing. She just doesn't live in the District. I look at Craigslist and Zillow for Northern Virginia, where she lives, and I can see a lot of very nice apartments for rent that this woman could almost certainly afford. If she needs a temporary lift, I daresay that a lot of banks would oblige her---she's going to be pulling in more than enough of a salary once she gets going to repay their trust.
Sorry, no sympathy here. DC has been run by democrats forever. She is moving to a city and needs to deal with the burdens of her own beliefs in action. DC is absolutely a city of the haves and have nots.
"This problem should inspire sympathy, not scorn."
Pathetic, Robby.
Only scorn for this snob. There is plenty of affordable housing in the DC area. But it's just not where she wants to live. Boo-friggin-hoo.
She doesn't seem to understand that she's going to be back in her district (not The District) pretty often. Plenty of members of Congress sleep in their offices or share apts with roommates.
https://tinyurl.com/y9gwtp84
She thinks she's starring in a reality show.
These people are barely scraping by. Most Americans are living quite comfortably.
It's a very valid point that she is making. But she has had months to figure this out. Like we are supposed to believe she will be forced to live in her car until she gets a paycheck. I'm sure there are measures in place to assure she has housing. One again she comes off as an idiot.

Are politicians also working on the problem of affordable Lear jets and affordable Rolls Royces and affordable 90-foot yachts?
What we really need is politicians who can conceptualize that it's not any government's job to make sure you have affordable housing. It's YOUR job to make sure you can afford it. That might necessitate learning and developing marketable skills, something that Buttercup has not bothered to do. I'm guessing that if she'd put the effort into becoming a licensed plumber that she has put into becoming a brain-dead socialist, she would have no trouble with affording housing.
Somebody should tell Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about Airbnb in DC.
