Six nutrition papers retracted from JAMA Network. The prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Network announced Wednesday that it has retracted six papers that included Cornell University food scientist Brian Wansink as an author.

Wansink made a name for himself over the past decade pushing research on small environmental changes that could majorly effect people's eating habits. His research was widely disseminated in major media and incorporated into government programs—most prominently, a program to encourage healthier eating in school cafeterias called the Smarter Lunchrooms program.

The Smarter Lunchrooms program was spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and designed by Wansink and his Cornell colleague David Just. As I noted here last August,

For the better half of a decade, American public schools have been part of a grand experiment in "choice architecture" dressed up as simple, practical steps to spur healthy eating. But new research reveals the "Smarter Lunchrooms" program is based largely on junk science.

The sham data behind the Smarter Lunchrooms program was exposed last year by PhD student Nicholas Brown and by University of Liverpool profressor Eric Robinson. From there, more of Wansink's work started being called into question. Now, the JAMA Network has announced the retraction of six Wansink articles published in its JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine and JAMA Pediatrics journals from 2005 through 2014.

In May, "notices of Expression of Concern were published regarding articles published in JAMA and the JAMA Network journals that included Brian Wansink," said a statement from the JAMA Network:

At that time, Cornell University was contacted and requested to conduct an independent evaluation of the articles to determine whether the results are valid. Cornell University has notified JAMA that based on its investigation they are unable to provide assurances regarding the scientific validity of the 6 studies.

A response from Cornell stated that "because we do not have access to the original data, we cannot assure you that the results of the studies are valid."

The six retracted papers include research into how serving bowl size effects the amount of food people eat in one sitting; how watching TV affects people's eating habits; why it's a bad idea to grocery shop while hungry; and how to get students to order healthier lunches. Here's the whole list of questionable Wansink studies that have now been retracted:

  • "Super bowls: serving bowl size and food consumption" (2005)
  • "Consequences of belonging to the 'clean plate club'" (2008)
  • "First foods most: after 18-hour fast, people drawn to starches first and vegetables last" (2012)
  • "Fattening fasting: hungry grocery shoppers buy more calories, not more food" (2013)
  • "Preordering school lunch encourages better food choices by children" (2013)
  • "Watch what you eat: action-related television content increases food intake" (2014)

FREE MINDS

Kennedy charity to bail out NYC women, teens. The Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights foundation "plans to spend millions of dollars to spring every bail-eligible city inmate that is 16, 17 or a woman in an epic move to promote jail reform," according to the New York Post.

The massive philanthropic move has New York City law enforcement upset, the Post notes.

"If a relative puts their house up for bail, the odds are pretty good that the arrested person will show up in court," fumed one source. "The odds are not that good if some rich person puts up the money. You won't feel as obligated to show up."

A high-ranking police source called the scheme "disgraceful."

FREE MARKETS

Small distilleries dragged down by regulation. "About 55 percent of the sale price from every bottle [of bourbon] Catoctin sells goes to the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority and state coffers," writes Eric J. Wallace at VA Growler, in a piece that explores how state regulations are thwarting a burgeoning Virginia distillery scene.

For Virginia's craft distillers, "a tasting room is essentially a break-even business," says Scott Harris, owner of Catoctin Creek Distilling Company. Harris says Virginia's hyper-regulatory spirits laws make it difficult to operate in the state. […] And while craft brewers and vintners can lawfully serve patrons to the point of visible intoxication, distillers are allowed to pour just 3 ounces of product per customer, per day. Exacerbating the problem are the drastically different tax structures. Excise taxes on spirits are presently $19.93 per gallon (the third highest rate in the nation). Beer is taxed at $.26 and wine at $1.51.

One distiller told Wallace that Virginia's regulatory environment for distillers is so bad that she opened her new facility in Pennsylvania instead. "We've tried talking to legislators and they don't want to listen."

Nearly half in top 5 U.S. cities don't speak English at home, record 67 million
Nearly half of the residents in the nation's five biggest cities do not speak English at home, choosing instead their native language, according to the latest Census Bureau data that details the impact of a decade of soft immigration policies.

Overall, a record 67 million do not speak English at home, said the bureau. That is nearly double in 27 years.

    1. Rich   7 years ago

      Another damnable census question?

    2. Conchfritters   7 years ago

No one in my family spoke English in the home until the late 1930s. They were dirt poor Scandinavian farmers. It took the next generation to go to school and and come home and teach the rest of the family how to speak it.

      1. Trainer   7 years ago

That's fairly typical. I've lived around quite a few immigrant communities and the original language is pretty much gone with the grandchildren. That even includes places like Mexican areas in Houston where there were whole neighborhoods that speak Spanish. The original immigrants don't really learn the new language because it's difficult to learn a new language as an adult. (I'm now living and working in an Eastern European country and even with language classes 4-5 hours every weekday and living with a non-English speaking family, I'm still learning slowly and I already speak several other languages). The next generation learns both but prefers English and their kids only learn English because it is spoken by their parents and in their schools.

There's a lot to like about the U.S. economy, which is enjoying its second longest expansion on record. Growth in the second quarter was the fastest in four years, while the unemployment rate of 3.9% is near its lowest since the 1960s.

China, by contrast, is showing signs of softness. Fixed-asset investment growth in the first eight months fell to the slowest pace since at least 1999. The yuan is down about 8 percent since Trump ordered tariffs.

"China should really wait another five years to stand up to the U.S.," said Jen.

China's economy was expected to slow as it relies less on debt and shifts to a growth model driven more by consumption, a shift touted Wednesday in a speech by Premier Li Keqiang. Beijing has already unveiled measures to shield itself against the trade war, including infrastructure spending and looser bank capital requirements. While high debt levels may constrain the ability to respond, Xi still has plenty of ways to ease the pain.

Yeah, an event that "everyone was talking about," but Ford supposedly never mentioned to anyone until 2012.

The new narrative that they're running with is that Ford "wouldn't be putting her idyllic life on the line" unless she was telling the truth--except her name was redacted in the letter that Feinstein showed to the FBI, and they chose not to pursue it when Feinstein didn't want to tell them Ford's name to begin with.

      1. damikesc   7 years ago

Why does anybody care about an allegation since the ONLY person not under oath here is the one making the accusation?

The Democrats are turning into a viciously anti-male party. Which I can buy given that their members are nasty skanks that no dude would touch without considerable amounts of liquor in them and a large dose of sheer desperation for any female companionship.

Perhaps dudes wouldn't "ghost" on them so often if they had anything worth sticking around for.

As of the most recent available moment in this episode, Ms. Ford's lawyer said her client would not appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee until there is a "full investigation by law-enforcement officials." Like the Mueller excavations, that could run to the horizon, unable to find anything but unwilling to stop until it finds something.

Let us posit that the one thing not at issue here is the truth. As a matter of law and fact, Ms. Ford's accusation can be neither proved nor disproved. This is as obvious now as it must have been when Dianne Feinstein and the other Democrats came into possession of this incident.

Surely someone pointed out that based on what was disclosed, this accusation could not be substantiated. To which the Democrats responded: So what? Its political value is that it cannot be disproved. They saw that six weeks before a crucial midterm election, the unresolvable case of Christine Blasey Ford would sit like a stalled hurricane over the entire Republican Party, drowning its candidates in a force they could not stop.

    What Democrats Have Become

Do liberal media notice the elitism oozing from their discussion of the credibility of Christine Blasey Ford?
I'm overhearing the television, so I'm not going to link to anything, but I keep hearing the indicia of elite status ? notably, that Blasey is a college professor.

I'm trying to think of how her allegations should be handled, and I want like cases to be treated alike. When will one allegation from long ago justify delaying the Senate confirmation process and the opening of new investigations?

The answer cannot be: when the accuser has elite status!

"There is no evidence that letting transgender people use public facilities that align with their gender identity increases safety risks," reports NBC on a large new study.

Most people aren't worried that actual transgendered people are a threat in this context. Most people are concerned about the jackass who just says he's trans so he can hang out in the women's locker room.

    1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

That and I am seriously concerned for Trans people's mental health.

They have really serious mental health issues, where even cutting off their own penises does not make them happy.

      1. perlchpr   7 years ago

Problems suffered by the actual trans people is a different thing. I'm just saying that once "locker rooms are effectively gender neutral" becomes a cultural norm, ladies are going to just fucking hate going to the gym or the swimming pool or all sorts of places.

But, yeah. I mostly feel pity for trans people. The way I figure, they either have massive mental health problems, or one of the worst birth defects in the world. (i.e.: Being born in a body of the "wrong" sex.) And neither one is particularly fixable with today's medical technology.

        1. mad.casual   7 years ago

they either have massive mental health problems, or one of the worst birth defects in the world. (i.e.: Being born in a body of the "wrong" sex.) And neither one is particularly fixable with today's medical technology.

Considering my having been born without beauteous wings, blazing feet, vorpal hand, dragon eyes, and tiger claw is a way worse birth defect and no more fixable with today's medical technology and I manage not to kill or mutilate myself, I'm going to go with the former.

I don't get the difference between a trans and an anorexic.

Both see their bodies as what they are not.

I just don't call anorexics "fatty". Because it'd be cruel.

But calling trans their "preferred" gender? That, apparently, isn't cruel.

That's why I always say you should just use the bathroom that would raise the fewest eyebrows. If you pass reasonably well as the other sex, use that bathroom. If you are having a "gender fluid" kind of day, but are still obviously of the biological sex you were born with, then use that one.

Guys dont care if women use their bathroom.

This is all about women's bathrooms.

        1. Zeb   7 years ago

And I bet women would care more if some bearded, butch looking person, dressing and acting like a man uses the ladies' room more than if someone dressing and acting feminine, but who has a penis does.

My point is if people just use some common sense and try to mind their own business, this shouldn't be a problem. As usual, it's activists fucking everything up and making an issue where there need not be one.

I don't care as long they do their business in a stall like they're supposed to. Other than that, it's just hand washing and makeup touch ups. There are a lot of public restrooms where I live now that are not designated for either gender. The stalls are more like little rooms (and often have squat toilets) and then everyone uses the sinks. I have yet to see a problem.

Some opponents of the nuclear agreement have argued that Obama's failure to seek Senate approval of the deal allowed Trump to unilaterally withdraw.

"They did not have the votes in the U.S. Senate so they found the votes in the U.N. Security Council. That is insufficient in our system of government if you want to have something enduring and sustainable," Hook said, adding that Washington hoped U.S. sanctions would force Tehran to negotiate.

Iran views the United States as acting in bad faith by withdrawing from a deal and has longed blamed Washington for stoking instability in the Middle East.

    Possible Iran-USA treaty

    1. I wonder if Lefties will now support a Trump treaty with Iran because the previous deal was 'good for the USA'
    2. Iran has been very aggressive for decades in trying to control the Middle East. Not excuse the USA's neo-con efforts in the ME.

"There is no evidence that letting transgender people use public facilities that align with their gender identity increases safety risks," reports NBC on a large new study.

I have no doubt this statement is true. I also have no doubt that individuals that NOW go to great lengths to video tape and otherwise spy on bathrooms will use these laws to spy on bathrooms, and a few new ones will be embolden to try if it is easy enough. It will happen, ignoring it will not make it go away and will only make the opposition look prescient when it does occur.

Nike has the right to feature whoever they want in their ads, and every individual person has the right to decide whether they want to support the company or not. And Paperneck is better at acting than he ever was at throwing a football on target.

As far as I have seen, they have never suggested that a private property owner or business should be required to allow trans people to use whatever bathroom they want.

The City passed the ordinance. The state threatened to pass the law. Reason's typical 'to be sures' were had about the ordinance that was put into effect but they were decidedly against the state passing the law that basically said private property owners were free to choose.

Reason themselves never came out and said they would require businesses to allow trans people to use whatever bathroom they please, they just took possibly the most mealy-mouthed, weaselly means of advocating civil libertarianism at the expense of liberty. It was their standard civil libertarian schtick where no one is forced to do something under the law but if they're widely and publicly shamed into doing so then liberty has been achieved.

Would you do anything at all? Maybe, instead, the "solution" proffered by so many here, who object to SJWs and who object to public shaming and who object to "Twitter mobs" and the like, is less about the objections to the mob actions themselves, and more about not really giving a shit about the injustices that they are protesting?

                    2. chemjeff radical individualist   7 years ago

There is a difference between opposing mob overreaction to a social injustice, and not caring about the social injustice in the first place. I think there are far too many libertarians who fall into the latter category. They are willing to condemn anyone who even expresses a concern about social injustice as a "filthy progressive" even if they advocate completely nonstatist and noncoercive means to try to alleviate the injustice.

Someone who wants to use the coercive power of the state to force individuals to obey certain rules in order to stamp out a social injustice is a progressive.

But someone who wants to alleviate social injustices as they perceive them is not a progressive per se. That is just a moral human being.

Too many people have become so anti-progressive that they are unwilling to even acknowledge or think about social injustices in the first place.

(It wouldn't bother you if it wasn't true)

          2. TuIpa   7 years ago

Jeff, you clearly haven't recovered from fucking up the Kavanaugh's mom thing, and your open slandering of the Duke lacrosse kids, so why don't you take another day off instead of putting the pedal back to the metal on stupid like you have here?

            It appears you learned nothing.

            1. chemjeff radical individualist   7 years ago

So what is your preferred method for enacting social change? Use the power of the state to force citizens to obey?

              1. TuIpa   7 years ago

What a strange place to put that question.

          3. Zeb   7 years ago

This is why I say the bathroom thing isn't a liberty issue, outside of property rights questions.

The question is whether this is desirable social change. People get to make up their own minds on that and I don't see how one answer is any more or less libertarian than another.

            1. chemjeff radical individualist   7 years ago

You are right. It is not an issue of liberty.

              1. TuIpa   7 years ago

There's that circle jerk I predicted.

                1. You and I   7 years ago

Tulpa and chemjeff look like the same poster. I think he's talking to himself because everyone else thinks he's not worth talking to.

      3. Azathoth!!   7 years ago

As far as I have seen, they have never suggested that a private property owner or business should be required to allow trans people to use whatever bathroom they want.

Then you haven't been paying attention. This whole thing started when the Charlotte city council passed an ordinance that made it illegal to not let people use the bathroom of their choice--in public or private spaces.

So it was EXACTLY what you said didn't happen happening that started all this.

The state government got involved by saying that cities could not make civil rights mandates stricter than those mandated at the state level and the transtorm exploded.

As always, I love how everything that Obama did during his presidency gets the label "Obama-era", as if he himself didn't actually do anything but was just some innocent, blameless bystander during his eight years in office.

Of course it goes without saying that you never have and never will see the term "Bush-era" or "Trump-era".

    1. Sarah Palin's Buttplug   7 years ago

Hey, Mikey! What do you think about Nike and Kap? Doesn't that just burn your ass up?

      1. Weigel's Cock Ring   7 years ago

See my response up above, Dipshit Dave Weigel.

Maybe you'll actually learn something about real libertarian principles, but I kind of doubt it.

      2. Fancylad   7 years ago

It creeps me out a little.

Not because of the kneeler, but because Nike hired him to provide lefty armor against new allegations of tax dodging stemming from the Paradise Papers, and #metoo accusations against CEO Mark Parker by several employees.
Now that the media have lionized the company as woke, there'll be less impetus to report on its grabby CEO and tax cheating.

        This has happened before.
Honey Maid parent Mondelez International was facing a huge lawsuit in California for misrepresenting how much transfat was in its products and Honey Maid was its biggest culprit.
So they came out in a big way for gay families with a "This is Wholesome" campaign. This made them Huffpo and NYT darlings, and allowed them to paint potential bad press as a homophobic attack on tolerance.

        1. DiegoF   7 years ago

Oooh good call! Why is no one reporting on this?

The Pepperidge Farm goldfish graham crackers are the tastiest anyway, if you can call such things that stretch the definition graham crackers. For more traditionalists there is one brand that has extra calcium that I remember tasting good. Or you can make your own; tasty!

          1. Fancylad   7 years ago

Why is no one reporting on this
Because you'll get called "racist" or "homophobe" as intended. Who's going to want to blacken the name of the latest woke darlings?

  31. mad.casual   7 years ago

There is no evidence that letting transgender people use public facilities that align with their gender identity increases safety risks," reports NBC on a large new study.

It this the part where we all pretend that this wasn't a straight up move to fuck over business owners?

I'm sure studies show that gay people do better when people bake cakes for them as well. People felt better when they get free insurance so the ACA made sense. Scientism at its finest. Thanks Reason!

Wansink made a name for himself over the past decade pushing research on small environmental changes that could majorly effect people's eating habits. His research was widely disseminated in major media and incorporated into government programs?most prominently, a program to encourage healthier eating in school cafeterias called the Smarter Lunchrooms program.

The Smarter Lunchrooms program was spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and designed by Wansink and his Cornell colleague David Just.

Goddamned Trump and all his fucking cronies! His placement of inept contrarian kleptocrats in top positions has got to make his administration one of the most corrupt in history.

Prediction: by this time next week, Brett Kavanaugh will officially be a U.S. Supreme Court justice, and the name Christine Blasey Ford will be on the way to being forgotten as the pathetic leftards are all like "never heard of her"!

    1. chemjeff radical individualist   7 years ago

When Kavanaugh casts the deciding vote to shred what's left of your Fourth Amendment rights, you can console yourself in knowing that at least that hussy Christine Ford was defeated!

      1. Weigel's Cock Ring   7 years ago

You're pathetic, and yes, when my prediction comes to pass I will be laughing at your lying dumb ass.

        1. chemjeff radical individualist   7 years ago

Yes we know. What is most important in life is (a) defeating the Left and (b) handing Trump a win against the Deep State. Who cares about that whole Constitution crap.

          1. TuIpa   7 years ago

So Kavanaugh should go down on the #MeToo crap... because he is bad on the 4th.

This is your argument, and Ken has pointed out why it's a loser.

            1. BYODB   7 years ago

Look, Kagan is on the court and she was literally never a judge. The fact is that the Supreme Court is already a joke institution, Chemjeff just protests anyone with a judicial record being confirmed perhaps because then you have a basis to actually review them.

Nevermind that people with zero record have been confirmed, and we had no idea how they might rule or if they were even telling the truth.

So, to protest now while Kagan is still on the court is literally a waste of time. The politicization of the courts has already happened, rather than it will happen at a future date.

I don't really a give a damn about Kavanaugh one way or the other, but the clown show surrounding the hearings should tell you everything you need to know about what state the Supreme Court is in.

          2. Azathoth!!   7 years ago

Yes we know. What is most important in life is (a) defeating the Left and (b) handing Trump a win against the Deep State. Who cares about that whole Constitution crap.

            Just (a).

We do that, permanently, and everything else will take care of itself.

Hell, the Constitution IS an attack on and defeat of the left in and of itself.

      2. Ken Shultz   7 years ago

The Democrats should have opposed him on that basis.

Make it about culture war horseshit and you lose.

        You lose to Trump.

You lose in senate confirmation hearings.

You make it about social justice warriors using unsubstantiated #MeToo allegations from 35 years ago to veto the norms of civil society--and you lose.

Make it about the Fourth Amendment, and I might even oppose Kavanaugh's confirmation.

        1. Weigel's Cock Ring   7 years ago

Kavanaugh of course is not perfect, because nobody is, and he wasn't my top preference (I was hoping the pick would be Don Willett).

"Chemjeff radical individualist" is a sad character who lies through his teeth here every single day, and he wouldn't be supporting Don Willett either, or anyone Trump would ever nominate. Because he wants more Sonia Sotomayors and Ruth Bader Ginsburgs.

        2. chipper me timbers   7 years ago

          ^ Exactly.

Kavanaugh is terrible on many things that are important to libertarians. Just terrible.

But this Ford accusation is laughable and makes me even half way root for him to get in. And I despise him.

Working in Nevada's legal prostitution industry can prevent a temporary legal resident from ever getting a permanent green card.

Is this going to be applied retroactively to all immigrant sex workers or does Melania get grandfathered in?

The Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights foundation "plans to spend millions of dollars to spring every bail-eligible city inmate that is 16, 17 or a woman in an epic move to promote jail reform," according to the New York Post.

Man, Progressives REALLY dislike men, don't they?

A clever conservative might highlight minority men who the Kennedys would prefer to rot in jail.

En banc 5th Cir. rules that prosecutors are not required to reveal exculpatory evidence to defendants before they plead guilty.

    1. damikesc   7 years ago

      God this site.

How the fuck is that court ruling remotely legal?

    2. Weigel's Cock Ring   7 years ago

NYC now has a great incentive to charge 16 year olds, 17 year olds, and women with any crime they came come up with and impose the absolute maximum amount of bail permissible on all of them!

  39. BYODB   7 years ago

Kennedy charity to bail out NYC women, teens. The Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights foundation "plans to spend millions of dollars to spring every bail-eligible city inmate that is 16, 17 or a woman in an epic move to promote jail reform," according to the New York Post.

Yeah, fuck those men in Prison! Women and children first! Yeah, gender and sex norms sure have changed all right.

These women should stay in jail to stick it to the patriarchy or something, shouldn't they?

In all seriousness though, I can't complain too much but I suspect they chose 'women and children' because, well, there are so few of them compared to the men that end up there. You do what you can, though, so ultimately I can't rib on them too hard even while no actual reform is likely to occur.

And, to the point, the police are actually right on this one. What incentive is there to show up for your hearing when you don't have any stake whatsoever in the bail? I know we reflexively dislike police around here but that doesn't mean a stopped clock can't be right twice a day.

The study finding no elevated safety risks from trans persons using bathrooms they prefer is so flawed. Safety is only one issue. The much much bigger issue is privacy. These policies are being applied (or they would like to apply them) to high schools. So a boy who claims he is a girl gets to use the showers with the real girls--what about their right to privacy? If the same boy exposed himself outside the school he would get arrested but in school it is ok? Claims that schools don't have locker rooms anymore are simply false--lots do. The same problem applies to places like beach locker rooms, YMCAs, etc.

"One distiller told Wallace that Virginia's regulatory environment for distillers is so bad that she opened her new facility in Pennsylvania instead. "We've tried talking to legislators and they don't want to listen.""

having worked in the beer business in VA, and having spent a tremendous amount of time in PA doing beer related events, I'm a bit shocked by this statement. VA is bad - confusing, arbitrary, and nonsensical. the joke among license holders is that if you want 4 interpretations of VA ABC laws, ask 3 ABC agents - one of them will provide at least 2 contradictory opinions. PA is similar, with the added joy of legislated arbitrariness like being required to buy beer only from distributors and only by the case (apparently to reduce drinking - no kidding!!). apparently, VA has gotten worse since I left the business - the idea that anyone believes that PA's insane and inane regulatory environment better supports a business case than VA's admittedly equally half-assed version just amazes me.
