Trump Confronts the Enemy Within
The president is a self-sacking quarterback.
Deep in the White House, someone is acting to subvert Donald Trump's policies, thwart his desires, and generally sabotage his presidency. No, not the anonymous "senior official" who wrote an op-ed for The New York Times. The name of the person making a relentless effort to keep the president from achieving his goals is well-known: Donald Trump.
Other presidents have occasionally shot themselves in the foot. Trump's lower limbs are riddled with new bullet holes every day. He campaigned as though he didn't want to win, and he governs—"governs," rather—as though he doesn't want a second term, or maybe even a full first term.
It would be only a mild surprise to learn that he has been a Democratic mole, scheming incessantly to covertly discredit the Republican Party by making it complicit in his ineptitude and sleaze.
For Trump to be a successful president would not be hard at all. He inherited a growing economy that has kept steaming along since he took office. He has thrilled the GOP rank-and-file with Supreme Court nominees Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
He has been able to roll back a host of federal regulations, to the delight of many business people. He has gotten a big package of tax cuts. He has avoided entanglement in a major new war.
Under ordinary circumstances, a Republican president with this record could expect solid public support and a flower-strewn path to re-election. That Trump has had approval ratings near record lows for the first 20 months of his presidency and faces the prospect of huge House losses in November is a testament to his talent for self-immolation.
Running a normal White House, after his volatile campaign, would have been enough to allay many voters' anxieties. Instead, Trump has made it his daily mission to generate strife and chaos. Bob Woodward's latest book, Fear, amply confirms what was already known. Revelations that would be shocking in any other administration are tediously predictable in this one.
Woodward is a formidable reporter with a matchless talent for getting insiders to talk. No one can seriously doubt his account of what White House chief of staff John Kelly said of Trump: "He's an idiot. It's pointless to try to convince him of anything. He's gone off the rails. We're in crazytown." Or Defense Secretary James Mattis' comparison of Trump to "a fifth- or sixth-grader." Or Trump's lawyer John Dowd's calling him a "liar."
Try to imagine senior members of the Obama White House talking about their boss this way. Or aides to George W. Bush. Or Bill Clinton. Every administration has malcontents, backstabbers, and foot-draggers, but not on this scale.
The Times op-ed, by a "senior official in the Trump administration," was additional proof of the unprecedented dysfunction he has created. Trump's "leadership style," the author reported with dismay, "is impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective." And: "The root of the problem is the president's amorality."
Such scathing assessments might be expected from the opposition party. But these come from people who work for Trump—former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson refused to deny calling him a moron—as well as from members of his party in Congress.
Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.)—whose voting record is more conservative than that of Ted Cruz—said the information in the Times op-ed "is what you hear from two-thirds of the senior people there." Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) agreed: "I am not a fan of anonymous op-eds, but I don't think those of us who have worked closely with people in the White House are surprised by the content."
They can only dream of how much Trump could achieve if he weren't always getting in his own way. Most of what is known about the president's malignant motives and brainless blundering comes not from anonymous sources but from Trump's public behavior and pronouncements. He's a self-sacking quarterback.
A conventionally corrupt president might privately criticize his attorney general because the indictment of two House Republican members means "two easy wins" are "now in doubt." To do it publicly, as Trump did, betrays not just sinister motives but monumental stupidity. To do it while under criminal investigation for possible obstruction of justice, though, is symptomatic of an irrepressible political and legal death wish.
Trump has created a host of enemies, outside and inside his administration. But his worst one is the man he sees in the mirror.

Obama inherited that growing economy from Booosh and Bill Clinton got that growing economy from Bush, Sr. When does the economy become the new President's, Chapman?
The reason that the Executive Branch has so many treasonous snakes is because Trump is doing a great job. Best president in 88 years plus some.
The bureacrats hate Trump and that is a good thing. Trump is rolling back their corrupt taxpayer payday as he can. Lefties have spent almost 100 years moving their socialist agenda forward incrementally. Trump is stopping that progress cold and rolling back so much that these bureaucratic scum are shitting themselves.
Cant wait for Chapman's many panty shitting articles after Kavanaugh is confirmed to the SCOUTUS before October 1.
The moment it turns to shit is when, of course. Which will undoubtedly happen one the Stable Genius' tariffs and super-duper budget deficits throw the monkey wrench, the sand and the termite on the works.
The budget deficits are far smaller as percentage of GDP than during the peak of Obama's years.
Furthermore, Keynesians claim that government spending acts as a stimulus and that we shouldn't worry about budget deficits. Apparently, that economic view depends on whether the president has an R or a D before his name.
"The budget deficits are far smaller as percentage of GDP than during the peak of Obama's years."
The thing is, though, that Democrats and Republicans have different opinions on the ideology of deficit spending. One of them campaigns on the premise of never, ever doing it, and the other party doesn't do that. So pointing out that they both do it, and happily, just means that one of the parties is violating its own stated (and repeatedly professed) ideology, and the other one isn't.
If you campaign on "deficits are bad and icky", and then create huge deficits, that's a bit hypocritical, as opposed to the bunch who say "deficits aren't that big a deal", and then create huge deficits. In a similar vein, campaigning on "marital fidelity is the primary way of gauging the honesty of politicians" and then supporting a serial non-monogamator, comes off hypocritical whereas campaigning on "marital fidelity is largely the business of the spouses, and not so much for everyone else" and then supporting a philanderer isn't as much.
Now, when you vote for the guy because you think he's been really successful in business, and it turns out that what he was mostly successful at was inheriting family money... that's not hypocrisy, but it's kind of foolish if the truth about the money thing was well established before the election.
Vote for me. I'll take your money, but I won't lie about it.
So, voting Democrat truly is "the death of hope".
How low can Trumpsters drag America?
Don't forget, Trump campaigned on paying off the entire debt in 8 years! From his tariffs!
Breitbart Do the math.
Tariff revenues of (19/8=) $2.4 Trillion per year ... vs Federal Revenues of $3.3 Trillion per year!
Tariffs are paid by consumers. So Trump PROMISED to increase consumer prices by the equivalent of a 73% tax increase! ... which says all you need to know about the "mental capacity" of Trumptards.
(smirk)
Well said, Kameradin.
Do you what the crazy thing is? You either believe this shit or you've pulled the greatest parody con in the history of the world. I stand in awe either way bro.
Joke accounts OMML and Horny Luizard have been activated for Sep 10, 2018.
What's the name of your LARP where Trump is a libertarian champion, it sounds like a nice escape from reality.
What is LARP?
LARP = "live-action role playing".
These are the nuts who bring their pretend world OUT of the basement, and into light of day. Usually with costumes.
That sounds like just about every progressive out there.
"Obama inherited that growing economy from Booosh"
revisionist much?
When was the economy good? When Republicans took control of Congress. When did it start sucking? When people voted for "the death of hope".
Seeing lovecon's (ha- what a username) posts every day it's not surprising. He/she's a cultist, and a proud one at that.
He is hoping you vill not notice he is Russian operative.
Yup. That is what we say about revising Obama's horrible presidency.
How low can Trump and his cult drag us?

*** Make America (debt) Great Again! ***
The author is very anti Trump but from a Libertarian perspective there are some positives. Less govt, regulation, lower taxes, judicial nominees. The alternative was Clinton, a disaster from a Libertarian perspective. Gary Johnson whom I voted for started well but then faded and of course had a running mate who is no libertarian at all.
Whining about it is no good all you get is an academic debate about libertarian philosophy. Take the wins and vote in more libertarian minded candidates in the house and senate. We would need 2 generations of wins to move things our way. Right now we are not close.
Johnson had NO platform and NO solutions. Because of the same folks YOU seek to think are libertarian.
Which is all we have. Slogans and soundbites.
Which is it? Does whining get elected or not?
We libertarians suffer the same fucked-up elites as the other tribes. Americans are open to even radical change, burt the entire libertarians establishment has NOTHING.but slogans for anti-gummint goobers. Nothing on taxes, the economy, jobs, health care, governance. Nothing at all
Progressives have been kicking our ass for decades, in the Court if Public Opinion. On EVERY topic.
Good lord- it's amazing that you can get off your knees long enough to find the keyboard.
Where do I send your trophy?
There's always lag time between policy and numbers adding up. The point of effectiveness/capitulation seems to occur between the two and three year mark of most administrations.
OMG ... what f*cking planet do you live on?????
Obama inherited a RECESSION, NOT A RECOVERY. ... the second worst since the 1930s ...
The recession ran from December 2007 - June 2009;
Obama took office in January 2009
MOAR ...
Obama's stock market had crashed and was still -46%
Obama began with THE WORST UNEMPLOYMENT (7.8%) SINCE 1984.
ht tp:// research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/data/ UNRATE.txt
OBAMA HANDED TRUMP THE LONGEST RECOVERY EVER, FOR AN INCOMING PRESIDENT.
June 2009 (link above) - January 2017. DO THE F*CKING MATH
Trump was elected on his promises to:
1) Pay off the debt in 8 years (He's already added $10 trillion for 8 years)
2) AFTER increasing spending AND cutting taxes (the $10 trillion after 8 years)
3) With NO cuts to Social Security and Medicare
4) And see that every American has health insurance.
Chapman is correct, Trump campaigned like a Democrat.
With a core base as totally unhinged as Trump.
PLUS .... Donald Jrt has witlessly CONFESSED to conspiring with the Russian government -- to elect his father -- who then lied about the meeting, making him a co-conspirator. THAT is the PROVEN treason. Which could sentence both to death.
P,.S. Trump has also FAILED to increase the Labor Participation rate he inherited
https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS11300000
Well, yes. Obama's broken economic and social policies caused millions to leave the labor force permanently, a horrific record for an administration.
Trump indeed has failed to fix that because once people have left the labor force, it's really hard to get them to work again.
So you blame Trump's failures on Obama.
Obama blamed Bush.
Tribalism would be amusing if it hasn't been so deadly.
Fior all his massive screwups Obama -- who inherited the 2nd worst recession since the 1930s -- somehow managed to hand Trump, the longest recovery ever, per Wyatt's official data.
On line charts, Trump has a steep upward slope on jobs and GDP. The angle is unchanged from Obama's. How long do you estimate that it will take Trump to achieve a greater slope than what he inherited from Obama. On anything? (Labor Force Participation
(Not defending Obama. As a libertarian I see both Trump and Obama as severe threats to individual liberty.)
P.S, You;'re totally wrong to blame the decline in labor force participation on Obama. The degree of loss was almost identical under Bush. Obama's down slope is a tad sharper but following the economic collapse. Go to my link. Adjust table tor 2000 - 2018 to see your error.
No, I blame Obama's failures on Obama.
You're hallucinating.
What that means is that, instead of recovering within 2-3 years, as we should have done, it's taken nearly a decade to recover from the recession. And that failure is directly attributable to Obama's economic policies.
You're no libertarian, you're a faker and a liar.
Proven as bullshit here!
The USA has never seen so many people leave the workforce like they did under Obama.
It would have happened under FDR but WWII came along and ground up 407,000 young men.
Obama Derangement Syndrome!
Why should anyone believe you, when you claim Obama's Great Recession was a RECOVERY (OMFG) ... in the very first comment on the page?
Now to THIS bullshit
1) The decline began under Bush -- technically Clinton -- in 1999
2) Obama's decline was virtually identical percentage, so he had a larger labor force. (Math blunder #1)
3) You actually compared Obama's 8 years to fewer than 2 by Trump! (That's a YUGE math FUCKUP)
I've seen everybody else posts PROOF of your bullshit, all down this page. Here's mine!
Trump said you people would defend him from even murder with witnesses.
So no surprise that you'd publicly humiliate yourself in service of your Master.
Nine times on this page. (I may have missed some)
"caused millions to leave the labor force permanently"
Why do you hate retirees?
Retirees have zero impact on Labor Force Participation, where the collapse has been steady since 1999.
Some were retirees. Most could not find work, so they quit looking.
Now we know that some found work since 2017 and unemployment fell to historic lows.
"Some were retirees. Most could not find work, so they quit looking."
People who can afford to stop looking for work are called "retirees".
Liar.
And ZERO IMPACT on Labor Participation -- those who have given up (at the margin) -- ACTUALLY at historic lows.
And the debt. Trump governs like a Democrat,. His own New Deal.
Despite all the bolded capitals, I agree with your key point: In what world did Obama inherit a growing economy from Bush? That's nonsense. But...
"OBAMA HANDED TRUMP THE LONGEST RECOVERY EVER, FOR AN INCOMING PRESIDENT."
Here's where you don't so much go off the rails, as descend into irrelevancy. We don't measure mountains by the horizontal distance you traverse to get to the top, but by the vertical; It was the "longest" and the shallowest recovery in history; Even the Great Depression averaged higher growth rates, Obama stretched a pathetic amount of growth out over 8 years.
Trumpsters are so funny. I checked Wyatt's data, and my own on Labor Force Participation.
Trump's slope is identical to Obama's for GDP and Employment. And, again, totally flat on Labor Force Participation. So as bad as Obama's recovery was, Trump is doing no better,
You're also laughably wrong on growth during the Great Depression, but many people are confused by GDP., so you've just shot yourself in he foot, Economic growth averages over 8% -- so you think that was a boom?
Its complicated, But government spending has a much greater impact on GDP, dollar for dollar, than private spending. That's how why had 8% growth in the Great Depression. The New Deal's public works and other "stimulus" (which did achieve 8% GDP growth, but failed as a recovery.
Trumpsters are so funny. I checked Wyatt's data, and my own on Labor Force Participation.
Dumbfuck Hihnsano thinks no one will notice him parroting his own sockpuppets.
I find it entertaining to watch him slip between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person all in the same thread.
I find it HYSTERICAL that you pull out that LAME bullshit ... and NEVER post anything on topic.
You don't have real discussions. So why should anyone oblige you?
Now go to hospice.
It's called "ridicule."
This was your turn.
Those charts ignore Americans that left the workforce pool entirely.
A lot of those people have,
Retired early.
Work independently.
Decided to live on less.
Live off their parents.
Macro economic cycles happen and I do not attribute them so much to who is sitting in the Oval Office. What can happen is the government can screw it up. Cutting corporate tax rates needed to occur and that was recognized even by Obama. One good thing was a republican congress had a president who would sign the bill. Cutting regulation was another good thing.
The employed wage earners will continue to work and technology will continue to generate wealth long term. Protectionism, nationalism and uncertainty are negative factors. I am concerned that things are too hot. Booms are always followed by big drops.
In his life Trump is like a day trader. He takes short term profits and walks away from losses. His empire is built on cotton candy. He makes nothing I can buy or use. He has no publicly traded companies. He is no Apple or Amazon. That should bother those of us who have invested a lifetime of labor and look to sustainable long term growth.
Libertarians know that the government is not the economy. We do that. Smaller government and freedom to move resources results in growth and better lives.
I am still in the workforce. I cannot predict the future any more than the next person. Trump is not my CEO if he were I would be looking for another arrangement.
Definitely. Presidents should not get the credit they do for economies. Even Congress has more impact on the economy than a president does.
Lowering regulations should be a point for a Congress and/or president. Raising regulations should a point against.
Trump is a business man like many others. Trump industries include hotels, casinos, real estate, golf courses, jets, TV.... If you consider those industries made up business, you would be wrong. They employ tens of thousands of employees and contractors to build and maintain those industries.
As to publicly traded companies being the pinnacle of business ethics or wealth, you might want to check your conclusion there. Public companies are owned by shareholders who can sell/dump all their shares on a single day and send a company into oblivion.
Enron is an example of that. In 2001, their stock went from $90.56 to pennies.
As to walking away from losses. The US Constitution grants the power for government to give everyone a second chance via bankruptcy. Go to bankruptcy court sometimes and see the hundreds/thousands of bankruptcies filed each year.
"Lowering regulations should be a point for a Congress and/or president. Raising regulations should a point against."
That's dumb.
Whether a regulation is good depends on what the regulation does. Removing a regulation is good depending on what the regulation did.
And, of course, both perspectives can be different for different people. A regulation that protects group A from group B is going to have different evaluations from individuals that are part of group A than from individuals from group B.
Please do not try and sell me a scam artist by talking constitution.
Right and for $800 dollars I can learn how to not pay income tax because it is unconstitutional.
Most regulations are worthless wastes of time and money.
Getting rid of as many as possible only helps.
Its a universal truth.
Once again, your stupidity knows no bounds. Amazing that you take advantage of protections everyday from regulations but are too dumb to realize it.
Educated people call them retirees and deceased.
On the reported data, there's no way to know which are permanent and which are not.
Again, educated people know that
So ,.. you'e totally full of shit again.
Because Galt humiliated you again.
Tell us again, why YOU say Obama's Great Recession was ... a growing economy!
What was the Great Depression ... a boom?
Should t you be in hospice waiting to die about now?
Why do you say Obama's Great Recession was ... a growing economy?
Was the Great Depression a boom?
Why do you REFUSE to see the proof?
Shouldn't you be in a home, waiting for dinner, when they remove your straitjacket?
Under Booosh, the economy was growing at above .01% each quarter. After Obama was elected, the market tanked and he never got the GDP average above 1.5%

You're the same guy who said Obama inherited a recovery!!!
I was gonna tear it to shreds, but Wyatt did it better than I would have.
And now you claim the exact opposite!!! And this bullshit is even funnier. You use Bush's average -- which is shameful -- since it ignores the collapse at the end -- that YOU say is a recovery.
Any intelligent person would see that your own data prove you VERY wrong when done properly, month-to-month.

First you say a recovery, then you show us the opposite,
And you may not know how business cycles work. It's not just GDP. The recession ended in June 2009, which makes your data useless.
Looks like Obama inherited a recovery AND a recession, depending which con job you're pushing at the moment.
Trump's base. My oh my.
P..S. Your data for 2009 is TOTAL bullshit Growth resumed in the 3rd quarter, which you call a 3.05% loss.
Is that why you provided no link?
As I said, Obama gets elected and the economy tanks.
The economy stayed stagnant for almost his entire 8 years as president.
F*cking liar,
Yiou sajid he inherited a boom,. Now lie because you were proven wriong And your GDP numbers are proven bullshit here
That's your third version. Also bullshit. And also proven at the same link.

Don't forget, Trump campaigned on paying off the entire debt in 8 years! From his tariffs!

Tariffs are paid by consumers. So Trump PROMISED to increase consumer prices by the equivalent of a 73% tax increase! ... which says all you need to know about the "mental capacity" of Trumptards.
"The longest recovery" is not a good thing. The economy should have recovered within 2-3 years, instead ten years later, we still haven't fully recovered. And Obama's economic policies are responsible for the slow recovery.
Same thing with FDR, he prolonged the misery of the the 1929 Recession into a Great Depression that lasted from 1929-1941. WWII got the USA out of the Great Depression.
Trump's tax cuts and push for America to be freer than before, got the USA out of the Great Recession.
Economic historians are broadly in agreement that WW2 did not 'get the US out of the Great Depression.'
Look at the data, the recovery lagged the ending of the war.
1930 $0.092 $1.015 -8.5% Smoot-Hawley.
1931 $0.077 $0.950 -6.4% Dust Bowl.
1932 $0.060 $0.828 -12.9% Hoover tax hikes.
1933 $0.057 $0.817 -1.2% New Deal.
1934 $0.067 $0.906 10.8% U.S. debt rose.
YEAR GDP ($T) GDP growth rate
1935 $0.986 8.9%
1936 $1.113 12.9%
1937 $1.170 5.1%
1938 $1.132 -3.3%
1939 $1.222 8.0%
1940 $1.330 8.8%
1941 $1.566 17.7%
1942 $1.862 18.9%
1943 $2.178 17.0%
1944 $2.352 8.0%
1945 $2.329 -1.0%
Granted, it was more a matter of FDR croaking.
Millions of military people were flooding back into the economy and the USA was still producing military hardware and supplies but scaling back.
Economic historians are correct in the sense that it wasn't wartime government spending that got the US out of the Great Depression.
What got the US out of the Great Depression was the defeat of fascism in Europe, which demonstrated to Americans clearly that free markets rather than fascism were the way forward in the US as well.
The SEVENTH time you are PROVEN a bullshitter.
As always, I'll call your babbling, and raise you the official data (again)
Dumbfuck Hihnsano's having another chimpout.
Silly Hihn, thinking his bullshit constitutes 'proof'.
Time to die Hihn. Hospice awaits.
You fucked up AGAIN!
THE DEPRESSION WAS OVER WHEN FDR TOOK OFFICE ... So THIS fuckup blows the best argument of all! That it was over before spending a dime on New Deal projects!
Proof is same link as Wyatt's Officlal dates for business cycles. http://www.nber.org/cycles.html
You'll probably be confused that it ended March, 1933. At the time, Presidents were still inaugurated in March, per the original Constitution
Will I now see ANOTHER massive blunder?
(I kinda like what you and Mark22 are proving about Trump supporters!)
THE DEPRESSION WAS OVER WHEN FDR TOOK OFFICE
Dumbfuck Hihnsano thinks no one will notice the double-digit unemployment rates in the 1930s.
Proof is officlal dates for business cycles. http://www.nber.org/cycles.html
Unemployment rates are one of MANY factors.that determine recessions and expansions.
il's described at the same same official source
In fairness, many share your ignorance on this.
A recovery began when FDR took office, before a dime of New Deal Spending.
Technically the word "Depression" was not applied until later, because the recovery was so slow.
Just as "Great Recession" was applied to Obama's recovery, because it was so weak.
Those terms have NOTHING to do with Contractions and Expansions, as shown in the data.
First recession/contraction: August, 1929 - March, 1933
Second recession/contraction: May 1937 - June 1938
All this is how we can have double-digit unemployment in a recovery.
This also happened in Obama's week recovery.

If the economy was humming along, why did FDR institute massive welfare work programs?
Government keeps getting involve in boom/bust economic cycles and makes them worse and/or last longer.
You have confused a recovery -- which I said -- with a "humming economy" (your error)
As you know, or should,. the economy was NOT "humming" when Obama's recovery began, June of 2009. Eh?.
A recovery means "growth" -- not the pace of that growth, for reasons which should be obvious.
P.S. As I explained to you elsewhere on this page, nobody knows when the recovery ends (at the time) because the date is announced much later, can be as long as a year later (George HW Bush's recovery). The delay is to make sure the recession is actually over, because -- at that moment it could be a "double-dip" recession, instead of two separate but close recessions (like the early 1980s)
(I have no idea why that matters, double-dip single or two separate ones.)

I can't begin to imagine what you're trying to say here.
If you mean recover to the pre-recession GDP. That was in 2011 (in real GDP) So you've blamed Obama for the depth of Bush's recession ... pulled "should have recovered" out of your ass ,,, and blew "recovered"by 7 years,
Check Wyatt's link for business cycles.
The only comparable recession was the one Reagan inherited was 16 month recovery
Obama's was 18 months -- and we all know Reagan had better policies,
This is GDP at the end of each year, Use the middle column, Real GDP (means adjusted for inflation)l
Trumpsters are famous for lying as badly as he does, Just inventing lame excuses out of thin air, whatever sounds good, on matters you don't seem to understand..

Like an old democrat - something more like the JFK era, but yes. So no wonder the blueblood crowd kicked back - they seem to be locked into a Nixonian mindset in congress and need to get a clue. Nixon tried identity politics, and he sucked at it. Virtually everything he put in place has been to the benefit of democrats over the decades.
49% of voters now say Trump should be impeached, and if his current rage remains uncontrollable, that number could skyrocket. I'm expecting Congress to flip. Impeachment commitments before the midterms,
The pundits are wrong about a "gutless" GOP Congress, Impeachment would make Pence President, which would be even more deadly to their party. Goldwater predicted, correctly, that the (then) Moral Majority was a major threat to his party. THAT threat stands next to the threat posed by Trump. Luckily, progressives have no clue what they're doing either!
Who today remembers (or ever knew) that both Reagan and Goldwater stood strongly against the extreme socons and so-called religious right. Goldwater ridiculed them repeatedly. Reagan crushed them at the ballot box, even bringing down the nationwide, anti-gay Anita-Bryant Crusade.
How times have changed!
"49% of voters now say Trump should be impeached"
At this point saying Trump should be impeached is just a way of identifying yourself as a Democrat. I'm not sure it actually implies wanting impeachment, it's just that publicly opposing impeachment would be equivalent to denying your party affiliation.
I hope they do impeach, honestly.
Makes all subsequent ones far easier. Rest assured, the next Dem would be raped as well. And the GOP would be wise to remember how this behavior seems to pay off and do it with every Dem forever.
Perhaps it's time for Sessions to be turfed and to investigate, deeply, such things as Comey's repeated false statements to Congress, Hillary's quid pro quo with Russia from 2008-2012, etc.
The American rollback of Socialism has started.
Even if Trump is impeached, any future Democrats or Socialist Presidents would get impeached in under a year. It would just show that impeaching president should be done immediately after the Democrats try and steal the election by using British spies.
Plus, the state will just be chipped away at until it is a small and limited government.
Its a win-win-win.
Everything to you is a win-win. Even when it makes no sense.
Crippling Socialism is a win-win-win.
Democrats are 27% of the voters.
You lose again.
"At this point saying Trump should be impeached is just a way of identifying yourself as a Democrat."
Not at all. Impeaching Trump does nothing if there aren't votes to convict in the Senate. And if you DO get a conviction, you just bring on President Pence, which, surprisingly enough, Democrats aren't clamoring for.
Trump being in office is WAY better for Democrats, long-term, than Trump impeached and removed.
There will be no Democratic Party left in 6.5 years.
You figure Putin doesn't want competition for his puppet-boy?
I don't believe the polls, and it sure doesn't look like anybody is denying party affiliation - except maybe old die-hard labor union rank & file that have gotten the short end of the stick for nearly 50 years. Purchasing power has yet to recover to it's late 60's/early 70's peak.
Which supports your ignorance!
You don't look at polls, so where are you looking.
Polls, pesky buggers that they are, show party affiliation collapsing -- faster from the GOP, with Democrats larger, and Independents much larger than both.
So Team Red and Team Blue, are increasingly dominated by goobers, who BOTH think THEY are the majority, and Americans are eager for their salvation.
In ideology, you get crushed even worse. Over 60% of Americans self-define as fiscally conservative and socially liberal, which means rejects both parties. Liberals and conservatives are 40%, combined, and shrinking.
The universe does NOT disappear if you close your eyes and refuse to see it,.
Who today remembers that Hillary Clinton had roughly the same positions on LGBT issues as Mike Pence: she supported Don't Ask Don't Tell and believed that marriage is between One Man and One Woman?
Who today remembers that the national debt tripled on Reagan's watch?
Do you know why?
I do.
You do not,
The debt did the same thing on Herbert Hoover's watch. Bert Hoover helped rearm christian nationalsocialism in Germany, Reagan mostly toppled international socialism.
" Reagan mostly toppled international socialism."
This will come as surprising news in China, and amongst people who have heard of China.
Plus the even greater screwup on the Grace Commission!
Marginally toppled is more like it. His successes [peeling back some of Carters aid and comfort] in central and south America were notable, but did not topple the international picture, only re-shaped it. The implosion of the soviet union seems to me more an issue of when not if on balance, so Reagan can't get 100% of the credit even if he did give them a shove off the fiscal and political cliff in an irrevocable moment in Reykjavic. It's worth noting that the one thing he's remembered for best: his "tear down this wall" moment was something that his staffers stripped from his speech multiple times, but he refused to abandon his instincts. Trump is not the first president to have to beat back jellyfish in the executive branch and he won't be the last.
But Reagan had ... character, which Trump lacks..
And Trump is literally owned by the Russians.
I'll call you out on bullshit. Even if your "tear down this wall" fantasy is true, it's revered to this day, and Trumps are ridiculed by all except his tiny cult.

Reagan LITERALLY crushed the nationwide anti-gay Anita Bryant Crusade, stayed neutral during his President, then resumed his attack on religious homophobe, with his own and Nancy's foundation for AIDS research.

I'll address your confusion. And prove it.
Hillary tried to get information -- but got NOTHING. We "idiots" keep hearing Trump saying that the dossier had NOTHING. Now you say she was conspiring with Russia. Which is it? It cannot be both!!
The dossier, from Fusion GPS, was originally financed by a wealthy Republican, to block Trump's nomination. When Trump was nominated, Fusion sold the same dossier to Clinton,. It had nothing, so they hired Steele to get more.
Michael Steel is not an not agent of the Russian government!, and nobody says otherwise., That kills the Hillary collusion lie.
Don Jr knowingly and willingly conspired with the Russian government, and we have rock solid proof! ... from Junior himself! (really stupid dumbass!)
Junior's email exchange, for the Trump Tower meeting, proves a conspiracy. By definition. He knew he was conspiring with an agent of the Russian government ... to help his father ... because he released the email invitation which says so!
Then Donald Sr conspired with Donald Jr., to lie about the meeting, claiming it was only about adoption. Nothing cam of tat meeting, but conspiring means planning together. Look it up. The emails were the conspiracy. Both Trump's were complicit. They will both be jailed. Full stop.

Who would have inflicted more damage to the nation at this point...HRC or Trump?
Question answers itself.
HRC would've faced a hostile Congress and Senate, something that very likely would not change with the first midterms, besides a political climate much better suited for a strong liberty momevement.
Trump, instead, gave us the totally unnecessary trade war and tariffs, a budget deficit the size of Ceres, a dysfunctional Executive branch, an immigration policy worthy of a banana republic's authoritarian regime, Capitalism under attack by both the left AND the right, racial division not seen since Woodrow Wilson... But at least, even with all the terror-inducing, ill-advised policies and deficits, well, he gave us Gorsuch... I guess.

"Tax cuts suck Ballz!"
Depends on who's getting them.
HRC would've faced a hostile Congress and Senate, something that very likely would not change with the first midterms, besides a political climate much better suited for a strong liberty momevement.
Not if the Dems had taken both the House and the Senate (as many "experts" predicted). With two Supreme Court picks under their belt and SCOTUS now leaning left the attacks on the First and Second Amendments would be starting about now. Hillary would have sucked up to the Paris Agreement crowd big time and started the US on the path of one of the biggest economy destroying schemes ever. HRC would never have called for a recalibration of NATO (long overdue) or even attempted to roll back any federal regulations.
As for the rest, I don't like his economic policies either and as for the supposedly dysfunctional executive branch, I don't place much stock in the truth of NYT editorials.
There's nothing authoritarian about wanting to secure our borders, something every other nation seems to regard as a priority.
Yeah. Who doesn't love a reduction in a suffocating regulatory state....
A hostile congress didn't stop Obama, why would it have stopped Hillary?
As an actual immigrant, I can tell you from first hand experience that you don't know what you're talking about.
Race relations deteriorated precipitously under Obama and actually have recovered under Trump.
(Of course, as a Mexican, you're the descendant of white imperialist European slavers anyway while pretending to be some kind of minority, so your concern in these matters is touching but not entirely genuine.)
It pretty much just follows existing trends, and we would have gotten the same budget deficits under Hillary... without the tax cuts.
Of course, as a Mexican, you're the descendant of white imperialist European slavers anyway while pretending to be some kind of minority, so your concern in these matters is touching but not entirely genuine.

"Race relations deteriorated precipitously under Obama and actually have recovered under Trump."
lolwut?
HRC took money from Russia to sell uranium to them --- and they, then, managed to export it overseas --- with an opposing party in Congress because she ignored all laws in regards to document retention so it was exceptionally difficult to learn of anything.
Hillary would've had the FBI and CIA on her side to spy on idiots like you. Keep that in mind.
"HRC would've faced a hostile Congress and Senate"
Trump has faced a hostile Congress; Just not openly hostile, because the majority dared not offend their voting base. But you can see that he's had very little cooperation on non-judicial appointments, for instance, and his legislative priorities have been largely ignored, where they haven't been affirmatively rejected.
Trump is basically a hostile takeover of the GOP, and the GOP establishment is NOT in any sense his friend.
The GOP establishment is mostly Progressive Republicans that agree with their Progressive Democrat tovarisch.
+1
"Trump has faced a hostile Congress; Just not openly hostile"
Yeah. The way they stonewalled his Supreme Court nominees...
"a dysfunctional Executive branch,"
Isn't this a feature not a bug?
Indeed it is.
God forbid we get all the government we pay for.
With Hillary you wouldn't have the decreased regulatory state that all surveys cite for increased wages and growth. You're pretty ignorant.
You also would have gotten more of the 'regime uncertainty' that held back development under Obama (and other presidential predecessors).
It would have been exacerbated by contention with congress under the 'opposition congress' scenario.
Sorry Viejo Chicano,
You're wrong but I have to give you credit for having the Progressive Plantation lies and propaganda memorized.
Now run along, back to your Progressive Elitist Masters and Uncle Tom Overseers like a good little Proletariat Serf.
If it was not for his two (especially Gorsuch) Supreme
Court picks, I would be hard pressed to find much of
value Trump has added. Reducing regulations of
course is always good.
The tax cuts will help me for a few years but then
go away and will drive the deficit to extreme heights (or it that depths?)
Tax cuts aren't spending. Trump didn't pass the spending budget.

IIUC HRC doesn't like males either.
His base loves him the way he is. His opposition would hate him if he had the brains of Jefferson, the charm of Reagan, and the speaking ability of JFK. It is the big independent middle that is put off by his persona and "leadership" skills even if they may largely like some of the policies he's championed. His base isn't going to be able to keep the GOP from being crushed in November, leading to two years of Trump frustration and, perhaps, more irrational behavior.
I have GOP operative friends who are openly discussing how to replace Trump on the ticket in 2020 whether he agrees or not.
We'll see... Every one of those things was ALSO true when he first ran... But he won. I honestly didn't think he had a chance, but I was wrong.
As far as GOP insiders wanting him out... Duh. They never wanted him in in the first place. He's an actual outsider doing what HE wants, not what the establishment consensus wants. That too we shall see about.
Trump has done a lot considering the Lefties hate him and fight him, the media hates him and fights him, the RINOs in Congress hate him and fight him, the Democrats in Congress hate him and fight him.
If Trump had a conservative Congress instead of RINO and Democrat majority, ObamaCare would be repealed and more rollbacks to socialist laws would have happened by now.
Sure, sure. On day one, he'd have signed that Obamacare repeal. If only.
It's all true. I've said it for decades, but the RINO types are why this country has really gone to shit. They lie about what they'll do in office, but people vote for them because the stuff the Dem says is even crazier... Then the RINO gets in and does NOTHING conservative. It sucks. If we'd had a real conservative congress and/or presidents in recent decades the country would be infinitely better off.
Are those the same GOP operatives that were so focused on Cruz to the point that Trump ended up winning the primary?

Libertarianism is Centrist. A little Social liberalism and fiscal discipline under Rule of Law.
Of which Trump is neither.
Trump is more Libertarian-ish than any GOP 2016 presidential candidates, except Rand Paul- maybe.
Even Rand Paul couldn't have pulled off so many Libertarian-ish things like trump has.
The only thing he has done that is "libertarianish" is cut the corporate and personal tax rate (and repeal obamacare mandate). It's also probably the only single event that may be helping the economy. Also glad he talked to little rocket man, although I'm not sure it accomplished anything. Any of the GOP candidates could/would've done the same with a republican house and senate (except talk to kju). Everything else is pretty much anti-libertarianish. The lesson for me is that intelligent people who know an economy cannot be centrally planned will still talk as if one man deserves the credit or approbation for the economic activity of 330 million people, apparently coz we're used to phrasing it in those terms.
When the economy is doing well and your TEAM is in charge, then of course your TEAM gets the credit. If the other TEAM is in charge, then the economy is doing good because your TEAM was previously in charge. If it is doing poorly and your TEAM is in charge, then it's the fault of the other TEAM that was previously in charge. If it is doing poorly and the other TEAM is in charge, then it is obviously their fault.
Heads you win, tails they lose.
The only thing the gov't can do is get the fuck out of the way. Lowering taxes and reducing regulations does that.
Also folks are resilient. Thus you can still succeed to some extent under higher taxes and more regulations. Its just harder.
The only thing the gov't can do is get the fuck out of the way. Lowering taxes and reducing regulations does that.
It also helps if government enforces property rights and contracts while providing non-violent means of settling disputes.
"The only thing the gov't can do is get the fuck out of the way. Lowering taxes and reducing regulations does that."
And build things, like roads and bridges, that link producers to markets. And develop new technologies, like space travel or interoperable Internet. And run schools that teach people how to build and maintain those things.
"Government" doesn't do those things, shitlib, people do.
Was "shitlib" on your word of the day calendar, or are you just misspelling the word that was?
That the economy can't be centrally planned, does not mean that a President shouldn't get credit for not tanking it. It can certainly be centrally tanked.
I... agree, and yet since central planning IS central tanking, this seems a matter of degree.

It's far more exciting to recline with a book by one of the great dead libertarian radicals than to read this sort of inconsequential crap in Reason. Even look to The American Conservative, rather than Reason, for diatribes against the US-backed slaughter in Yemen.
Look, I don't like his personality. I don't like a lot of his policies. I don't like a lot of stuff he does or says. But this article is pure TDS. It's 95% concocted by the mainstream media, which is ardently against him, and career politicians/insiders of various sorts.
If he was being TREATED like a run of the mill president, instead of being torn apart constantly, undermined, etc most people wouldn't be trippin' on anything, because nothing he has actually done has been THAT outrageous. Tons of our presidents were as bad or worse on saying crazy shit, it just didn't get put into the papers. Look up LBJ quotes if you want to see some sketchy ass stuff being said by a president! Fortunately for him his "We'll have these niggers voting Democrat for the next 100 years!" quote didn't make it on the front page of the New York Times when he first said it.
So yeah, it's mostly just TDS.
Except that LBJ was right?
I dunno... We're at the 50 year mark, and he's been right so far... Come back and see me in another 50 and I guess we'll know then :/
If Trump is playing n-dimensional chess, then based on the results of the last impeachment getting himself impeached may be his goal.
I thought, Trump was fine with being a single term president could get everything done that he promised on the campaign trial. He underestimated the treasonous bureaucracy that are fighting to keep the state of corruption.

Fuck off.
I'm sorry your hemorroids are bothering you again.
Credit where due to Chapman. He/she/it has provided the Progressive talking points like a good, little serf for his/hers/its Progressive Elitist Masters. Although I do wonder:
Does it hurt being this ignorant Stevey?
Or just normal for a Progressive Propagandist?
You're stuck in a loop. You used this one already.
"No one can seriously doubt his account of . . . "
This idiot Steve Chapman just called John Kelly and James Mattis bald faced liars. What an idiot.
Anyway, Steven Chapman misses the mark completely on the bigger picture. Yes, it is true that Trump's achievements have been excellent -- by the standards of an establishment Republican -- such that in recent history (or what Chapman calls "ordinary circumstances") Trump "could expect solid public support and a flower-strewn path to re-election."
But Trump never would have been elected as an establishment Republican, and the things he has achieved are very secondary and tertiary to the signature reasons he was elected -- the primary things he was elected to do. Those primary things are his agendas on immigration and trade. With all of the forces of the establishment and globalism around the world arrayed against him, he couldn't have picked a more difficult set of objectives, but that's what he did and why he got elected.
" Yes, it is true that Trump's achievements have been excellent -- by the standards of an establishment Republican"
Pardon the interruption, but... what achievements? Except for the tax cuts, his legislative agenda is... not achieved. That Obamacare repeal he was going to sign on day one, for example, has yet to be signed.
And that's all been because Republicans in the senate, like that shit bag John McCain, wouldn't vote for the stuff that was put in front of them?
He has managed to roll back the individual mandate, regulations, and a lot of other minor victories which add up to a decent amount of stuff overall. If he had a decent congress I have little doubt that Trump is the first president in ages that would sign off on MAJOR reforms at the federal level.
Make up your mind.
Does Donnie get credit for what the Congress does, or are they trying to thwart him?
On the one hand, it's not his fault that Republicans in Congress got so used to being the opposition party that they still can't agree on anything they're FOR, only things they're against. On the other hand, he DID run as a Republican, so he CHOSE to associate with them.
There is no mind to make up, it doesn't have to be one or the other.
First, he went Republican because the Democrats have gone off the deep end in recent years. In 1984 he may well have chosen to run as a conservative/moderate Democrat... But it ain't 1984 anymore.
As far as accomplishments, he gets some credit, and so does congress. He largely called the tune as to what things to push through... Which they mostly tried to do... But the crappier members, mostly in the senate, either shot down some of his plans outright, or only passed watered down versions because they're shit bags. If he could get his wish list passed without modification, I think he'd do some awesome stuff.
Trump is rah rah rah for military spending, but I honestly believe that if he was presented with a bill that cut spending 25%, or even higher, for all other non discretionary stuff... He would probably sign off. That's more than I would say about any other recent presidents. He'd probably cut taxes a ton lower too. And gut regulations like crazy. Etc. He just doesn't have a congress willing to do the crazy stuff, but they will play ball on minor to mid range importance things.

God ! guess Steve is Reason's Retard Affirmative Action program.
Sure thing this whole turn around was just a gestation period for Obama's brilliant economic policies of higher taxation and more regulation.
All it took was 8 years , tax cuts and reduced regulations , which by the way had NO effect, two years and then voila, sustained economic growth.
Why is this shill bot writing articles for Reason?

Can anyone point to a single thing Trump has done or said that is not copied straight out of the Republican platform? The guy is the Gee-Oh-Pee-in-a-Dixie-cup-or-be-fired President from central casting. Every bad mistake made by Herbert Hoover, Reagan or the Bushes he has perpetuated and amplified--including asset forfeiture looting--Trump is repeating. So what are the odds on another economic collapse similar to 1929, 1987 or 2007? Such a collapse could again make the Dems the Lesser Evil despite their pseudoscience and platform War on Electricity.
"Can anyone point to a single thing Trump has done or said that is not copied straight out of the Republican platform?"
Cozying up to Russia? Well, not so much to Russia, but to Putin, personally.
He hasn't started any new wars anyway... So there's that. But I fail to see how cutting back taxes and regulation is a bad thing. Obviously spending needs to be cut, but that shit ain't gonna happen without him having the house and 60 votes in the senate soooo...
"He hasn't started any new wars anyway..."
Well, not the shooting type, anyway.
Hasn't the cojones.
What other type are there REALLY? I'm pretty sure wasting trillions to achieve nothing, and killing tons of poor bastards overseas, is about the worst thing any president could do.
As for cajones, I think Trump would gladly lay waste to entire nations... If they had it coming, and if there was no other alternatives. I think he'd LOVE to be a war time president, they all do! But he's smart enough to realize it's not worth starting a pointless war to do it. He already inherited a couple, and seems to be happy with them for now.
You really do seem to have some TDS goin' on James.

What is lost on the author of this article is that this is about insiders looking to expunge the outsider. Trump has enemies on all sides. He is the disrupter of the status quo. Government does not like disruption. There is an entrenched working order that believes they know better than those they allegedly work for.
Trump was sent by those people to shake up that order, and work to put the power of government truly where it belongs. In the hands of the electorate. That frightens the that entrenched working order, and they will not go lightly.

"Me thinks thou dost see too many conspiracies about..."
That's the point. It's crazy, but it does just as good a job at explaining the President's choices as any other theory except "He just doesn't have a clue what the fuck he's doing, and what you're seeing is the effect of the 'just wing it' approach to governance."
Or, to attach the partisan spin, this is the logical end result of the Republicans' approach of the last several decades... "It's true if we say it is, and if it isn't true, we'll keep repeating ourselves until it IS true. Also, if the news tells you what IS true, and it differs from what WE SAY is true, it's because they're all biased."

This article is back asswards. The government- the D.C. swamp is the enemy of the people. OF COURSE they don't want President Trump, our very own agent tasked with draining the swamp (threatening their jobs and their way of life). They can never be anything but our enemies. For a bunch of supposed libertarians, this article strikes me as inexplicably naive. How do you think a real reformer is going to be treated?
If Obama hadn't strangled the economy with needless regulations (many of which have since been removed) during his last 4-6 years in office, recovery, prosperity and high consumer confidence might have happened sooner.
Trump is clearly nearing a total breakdown.
Along with all his trolls here. But he has them masterfully brainwashed. The more proof of his massive failures, THEY see more proof of a Deep State Conspiracy. Remember, virtually his entire core base are Birthers. They've been drinking his Kool-Aid for over a decade.
Only 32% of Americans think he's trustworthy
49% want impeachment to start now
56% believe he's unfit for the Presidency
63% of young people know he's a racist (they saw his disgrace with Charlottesville)
Only 40% think he's the change agent they wanted.
Don Junior CONFESSED to conspiring with the Russian government who SAID they wanted to boost dad's election. Then Donald LIED about the meeting, a cover up that makes him a co-conspirator HERE too.
It's now worse than his business failures.

So ... will he quit ... or commit suicide?
His tiny ego has the strong smell of doom.

You entrusted Trump with your total, blind faith. A puppet on a string.
He said you'd even lie to defend him from murder.
That may be exaggerated. But you frequently humiliate yourself, publicly, defending him.
And he betrayed you. I can sympathize with your pain and loss.
Work on your judgement.
So in short, he's polling about as well as he was WHEN HE WON THE WHITEHOUSE. I don't like him. I didn't even vote for him! Lots of centrists don't like him either... But DID vote for him anyway. Either because of the lesser of two evils thing, or they just liked a few of his policies. Either way I don't think Trump is going down in flames anytime soon.
I was POSITIVE Bush II was going down in flames for reelection... Yet he won. The media psyched me out with all their Bush hate. But he won anyway. And Bush was a lot more of a piece of shit than Trump. So we'll see Hihn. Hopefully Trump will still be giving you aneurysms in 2024!
I frequent 538, and that's one of my complaints about their graph of Trump popularity: They start the graph at the peak of his (very short) honeymoon, not election day. Which really serves to conceal that he wasn't any more popular when he got elected.
Makes the "He's doomed!" line easier to sell.
OTOH, he can't really count on Hillary getting the nomination again, it's at least theoretically possible that they won't nominate an aging unlikable criminal. Though that's the way to bet...
Well, an aging, unlikeable criminal on both sides again would be more fair.
Yeah, if they did pick one of the few boring, centrist Dems who isn't so unlikable, they might have a shot in 2020. Although I think the establishment is going to try to push somebody like that in, like they did with Hillary... I don't know if they can overcome the radical faction this next go around. The entire base seems set on nominating Stalin or something next time. LOL
I'm hoping it's Mad Maxine! That would be SUCH a fun train wreck to watch!
Maxine vs Pence would indeed be a laugh riot.
Even in Trump's prison cell.

"Deep in the White House, someone is acting to subvert Donald Trump's policies, thwart his desires, and generally sabotage his presidency. No, not the anonymous "senior official" who wrote an op-ed for The New York Times. The name of the person making a relentless effort to keep the president from achieving his goals is well-known: Donald Trump."
This list is now old, and (full disclosure) does not include Trump's idiot (supposed use of) tariffs (we'll ignore his attempts at stopping illegal immigration):
1) DeVos
2) Gorsuch
3) Ajit Pai, end net price fixing
4) Major reduction in the growth of regulations
5) Dow +30%
6) Unemployment at 3.8%
7) The US Manufacturing Index soared to a 33 year high
8) Got repeal of the national medical insurance mandate.
9) Withdrawal from Paris climate agreement.
10) Not sure about the tax reform; any "reform" that leaves me subisdizing Musk's customers is not what I hoped for. Let Musk run a company for once.
11) In the waning days of 2017, the Trump administration pulled its support for the $13 billion Hudson Tunnel project.
12) More than 16,000 jobs have been cut from the federal leviathan
13) MIGHT have a deal to de-nuke NK.
And finally:
14) Still making lefties steppin and fetchin like their pants is on fire and their asses are catchin'
To repeat, I did not vote for the guy; he's a blow-hard and a loose cannon, and I dunno if he has achieved his goals, but by accident or design, he's doing better than any POTUS I can remember.

While this article is presented in the standard them vs. us format Steve C doesn't fully accept that some of his readers simply like it when we can live freer, ave liberty increased no matter who is in office. Maybe that's the problem with Libertarians?
The reason libertarians aren't (and probably will never be) significant politically is that no two libertarians agree on much of anything, specifically including what exactly it means to be "libertarian". The existing political parties ARE effective because they unify and speak with one voice. That unity is why they get people elected.
1) Most libertarians -- who are over 60% of voters -- agree with you.
2) Libertarianism (ideology) is REJECTED by 91% of libertarians (values)
3) The entire libertarian establishment has NO policy solutions for ANYTHING. Nothing on taxes. Nothing on health care. Nothing on governance. Only anti-gummint gooberism. "Git Gummint Out" is NOT a policy. CANNOT restore free markets.
4) Cannot show how to do ANYTHING better than it's being done now ... even though the private sector once did 90% of everything government now does.
