FCC Fabricated DDoS Attack During Net-Neutrality Fight: Reason Roundup

No net-neutrality rooted attack on FCC servers. For a second time, David Bray, former chief information officer for the Federal Communication Commission (FCC), seems to have been caught fabricating stories about distributed denial-of-service attacks (DDoS) on FCC servers. Bray's most recent fable came in May 2017, as John Oliver of HBO's Last Week Tonight was asking viewers to flood FCC comments with support for "net neutrality" legislation, and is the subject of an upcoming Office of Inspector General's report.

"Bray had previously leaked baseless claims that the FCC was struck by a cyberattack in 2014," Gizmodo discovered.

The inspector general's report has not yet been made public, but FCC Chairman Ajit Pai and Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel have both commented on its contents.

"The Inspector General Report tells us what we knew all along: the FCC's claim that it was the victim of a DDoS attack during the net neutrality proceeding is bogus," said Rosenworcel. Here's her spin:

What happened instead is obvious—millions of Americans overwhelmed our online system because they wanted to tell us how important internet openness is to them and how distressed they were to see the FCC roll back their rights.

And here's Pai's:

With respect to the report's findings, I am deeply disappointed that the FCC's former Chief Information Officer (CIO), who was hired by the prior Administration and is no longer with the Commission, provided inaccurate information about this incident to me, my office, Congress, and the American people. This is completely unacceptable.

"On the other hand," Pai continued,

I'm pleased that this report debunks the conspiracy theory that my office or I had any knowledge that the information provided by the former CIO was inaccurate and was allowing that inaccurate information to be disseminated for political purposes. Indeed, as the report documents, on the morning of May 8, it was the former CIO who informed my office that 'some external folks attempted to send high traffic in an attempt to tie-up the server from responding to others, which unfortunately makes it appear unavailable to everyone attempting to get through the queue.' In response, the Commission's Chief of Staff, who works in my office, asked if the then-CIO was confident that the incident wasn't caused by a number of individuals 'attempting to comment at the same time . . . but rather some external folks deliberately trying to tie-up the server.' In response to this direct inquiry, the former CIO told my office: 'Yes, we're 99.9% confident this was external folks deliberately trying to tie-up the server to prevent others from commenting and/or create a spectacle.'

Internet companies cancel Alex Jones. On Monday, Facebook permanently banned the Jones-helmed website Infowars from the platform, YouTube removed all Infowars videos, and Apple deleted all Infowars podcasts from its store. A few perspectives…

Washington sees in Silicon Valley a chance to control speech in a way never before possible under the 1st Amendment and to roll back the clock to a pre-internet age of media gatekeepers. The way to achieve this is by continually leveraging the threat of regulation. https://t.co/xHTW5HQ5M6

Who said anything about private? The constitution guarantees the freedom to speak one's mind, not the right to a Facebook page. Alex Jones can scream in his basement all he wants. Nobody is obligated to give him a platform.

— Ben Grimes ? (@softreeds) August 7, 2018

Whether you hate Alex Jones is beside the point. Do you love the fact a handful of tech monopolists have the power to simultaneously purge him from the internet?

— Michael Tracey (@mtracey) August 6, 2018

Alex Jones interviewed politicians, activists, journalists, and all kinds of public figures over the years. Now those archives are simply gone. Too bad for researchers and historians. It was more important that we be protected from his bad speech

— Michael Tracey (@mtracey) August 7, 2018

First they came for Alex Jones, and I did not speak out

Because "they" were individual people and entities

And they "came for" him by making their own choices about how to exercise their own speech and association

And that's liberty, not tyranny

— QHatSecretMessages (@Popehat) August 6, 2018

1st amendment evangelists whine about private companies choosing to terminate the account of one who has repeatedly violated their terms. But the strangest rationalization is that "FB is a major source of where ppl get info", as if that exempts them from freedom of association.

Iran "faces a choice," said President Trump in a Monday statement announcing that the U.S. would reimpose economic sanctions on Iran, after lifting them in 2015. The country can "either change its threatening, destabilizing behavior and reintegrate with the global economy, or continue down a path of economic isolation," said Trump.

The Iran sanctions have officially been cast. These are the most biting sanctions ever imposed, and in November they ratchet up to yet another level. Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States. I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less!

The Hunger for a Bold Socialism
The political preferences of two college professors, writing in a prominent leftist journal, are informed by the belief that "making people's lives materially better isn't enough."

...Of course, bold socialists intent on destroying rather than reforming capitalism have brought about some rather unpleasant historical outcomes.

Lest anyone imagine that the authors are unaware, they include words nodding to potential pitfalls. Here is that unintentionally extraordinary passage: "Socialists don't just want to replace private ownership with state ownership," Desan and McCarthy argue. "In the same way we don't believe that capitalists should be able to have disproportionate control over economic resources, we don't think unaccountable state officials and bureaucrats should have the power to control investment and production through 'socialism from above.' In some cases, like the former Soviet Union," they add, "the failings of such a system are nearly as deep as those of capitalism itself."

France, Where Age of Consent Is Up for Debate
After May 1968, French intellectuals would challenge the state's authority to protect minors from sexual abuse. In one prominent example, on January 26, 1977, Le Monde, a French newspaper, published a petition signed by the era's most prominent intellectuals?including Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Gilles Deleuze, Roland Barthes, Philippe Sollers, Andr? Glucksmann and Louis Aragon?in defense of three men on trial for engaging in sexual acts with minors. "French law recognizes in 13- and 14-year-olds a capacity for discernment that it can judge and punish," the petition stated, "But it rejects such a capacity when the child's emotional and sexual life is concerned." Furthermore, the signatories argued, children and adolescents have the right to a sexual life: "If a 13-year-old girl has the right to take the pill, what is it for?" It's unclear what impact, if any, the petition had. The defendants were sentenced to five years in prison, but did not serve their full sentences.

    1. Longtorso, Johnny   7 years ago

In 1979, Liberation published another petition, this time in support of G?rard R., a man on trial for having sex with girls between the ages of six and 12. It was signed by 63 people, many of them well-known intellectuals like Christiane Rochefort and Pascal Bruckner. It argued that the girls in question were "happy" with the situation. "The love of children is also the love of their bodies," they wrote. "Desire and sexual games have their place in the relationship between children and adults. This is what G?rard R. thought and experienced with [the] girls ? whose fulfillment proved to everyone, including their parents, the happiness they found with him."

Wilber Ross .... Wasn't he the guy cavorting in a fountain with a stripper?

    2. TrickyVic (old school)   7 years ago

When I look at the Wiki page on him, I'm not sure what part of the swamp he's really from.

Ross was raised as a Democrat.[36] He served under U.S. President Bill Clinton on the board of the U.S.?Russia Investment Fund. Later, under New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Ross served as the Mayor's privatization advisor.[37] In January 1998 he put $2.25 million in seed money into the campaign of his then-wife, Betsy McCaughey Ross, who was seeking the Democratic nomination for Governor of New York.[36] Although he was an early supporter of Donald Trump's presidential campaign, Ross was previously a registered Democrat, served as an officer of the New York State Democratic Party, and held fundraisers for Democratic candidates at his apartment in New York City. Since at least 2011, Ross has been donating to Republican candidates and organizations. He became a registered Republican in November 2016.[38]

          Learned his trade under Clinton.
          Makes sense.

      2. Jerryskids   7 years ago

He's from New York City, where there's not much difference between a Democrat and a Republican and they're all swamp creatures. Witness Trump's shrugging off his donating to Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer with the "it's just the way the game is played." Well, sure - if you're just gaming the system, it's what you do. But some of us don't play the game because it's a dirty business. Just because something's not illegal it doesn't mean it's not unethical, immoral or unprincipled and once you start rationalizing and excusing playing dirty it's a slippery slope into outright criminal behavior. It's like a guy going around scooping all the change out of the "take a penny, leave a penny" trays at the stores - it's not illegal but it's a warning that this guy is probably not somebody you want to turn your back on.

        1. TrickyVic (old school)   7 years ago

          "" they're all swamp creatures."'

          Exactly.

What's sad is when people want to ignore parts of the swamp while complaining about the swamp.

      3. Happy Chandler   7 years ago

McCaughey only ran as a Democrat because she was dropped from the ticket by Pataki. She was Lt. Gov and tried to upstage the boss, so she was dropped.

Though she had always voted Republican in presidential elections and taken conservative Republican policy positions, McCaughey suddenly switched her party affiliation to Democrat and soon announced plans to run for governor against Pataki.[1] McCaughey was the early frontrunner for her new party's nomination process,[55] in part because of her statewide name and face recognition and in part because of the financial support of her wealthy then-husband.[56] During her campaign for governor, she was criticized for firing a succession of campaign aides and political advisers and possibly changing her core political beliefs in order to appear more electable to New York voters.[1] As her opinion poll numbers sank, her husband took away more than half of the funds he had pledged to her campaign.[12]

She's most famous for leading the charge against the Clinton Health Care plan in 93 and for inventing the death panel lie.

Tyler Joseph Schlosser Spotted Having Sex With Pony in Oklahoma: Cops

ccording to court documents obtained by Newsweek, a woman and her child recorded Schlosser on video during the incident and gave that recording to police. The woman told police Schlosser "looked like he was having sex with the animal," according to the affidavit. When he saw the woman recording him, he "stopped what he was doing and started walking towards them," police said.

The 29-year-old utility worker told police that his medication caused him to engage in such activity. Further details about what medication Schlosser may have been referring to were not made available. Schlosser's step-grandfather, James Hester, told Newsweek:

Well, the only thing we can figure out is someone had drugged him. I think somebody put something in a bottle of pop he had. He got sick after he bought that pop and he just lost it. I spoke to him and he don't know anything about what happened. He's feeling better now. He come around. Tyler's not that kind of guy. He's a good Christian boy. He's not the kind of person who would do something like that.

Sort of. Even lacking an explicit beastiality law, lots of places will prosecute a man that sexualy penetrates an animal under their animal abuse statutes.

Where it gets difficult to prosecute without beastiality law is when the human is the receptive partner.

And yes, such a case (dog dicking it's owner) is why Florida finally for a beastiality law in the last decade. Prosecutors were baffled that they had no law to prosecute the guy with, so the legislature changed the law.

    Let's Not Talk About Sex

A majority of millennials think that lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender people face a significant amount of prejudice in America. Most young people?whether gay or straight, gender-conforming or otherwise?think it's important to protect youth from bullying, and the larger LGBTQ community from discrimination in housing and employment.

At the same time, millennials are products of the world in which they live, and a surprising number of them say that "the increasing acceptance of homosexuality in our society is causing a deterioration of morality."

    Us millennials are human garbage.

    1. Leo Kovalensky II   7 years ago

I think the idea is that they may personally find it immoral, but they also think it's important to allow for the personal freedom. Millennials largely see freedom of discrimination as part of freedom, and see discrimination as not a right to be protected.

Sex dolls which 'go all night' could replace MEN ? as women 'can't tell the difference'

Men face being made redundant in the bedroom if women turn to silicone robots which "do not tire" or suffer from "performance issues".

It comes as the world's first Harmony sex doll owner exclusively revealed the "realism" of romping with the artificially intelligent android to Daily Star Online.

The male equivalent, dubbed Gabriel, is also programmed with unique conversations and stories to share with partners.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! BAN SEX DOLLS RIGHT NOW! BAN THEM! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

"MOSCOW?Sen. Rand Paul met with Russian lawmakers Monday and invited them to Washington as part of a growing outreach to the Kremlin, days after a bipartisan group of U.S. senators proposed tightening sanctions against Russia over findings of election interference.

"Russia shouldn't be considered our friend, but we have certain shared interests?regarding Syria, terrorism and energy," said Mr. Paul (R., Ky.) after meeting with lawmakers from the Federation Council, the upper house of parliament."

    http://www.wsj.com/articles/se.....533570858?

Working for the best interests of the United States means sometimes dealing with people who are not your friends.

Seems like something a parent should teach a child. It's amazing how many grown men and women find the suggestion mystifying.

Yeah, Rand Paul is acting like a grown-up, here--compared to a world of Democrats (and plenty of Republicans) who are acting like little girls in a snit. It's too bad that we live in a time where our leaders need to be congratulated for acting like grown-ups, but Rand Paul is absolutely right, here. The United States' best interests are not served by refusing to speak with Putin until he realizes what he did that made us mad and somehow finds a way to make up for it.

Not only is Drumpf leading a hate movement against marginalized groups like black and brown bodies attempting to cross our borders, he's leading a hate movement against journalists. It's right out of Hitler's playbook.

These "fake news!" attacks on the media are totally unacceptable. Do reporters sometimes get things wrong? Of course they do, since they're only human. However, on those rare occasions when mistakes are made, they are corrected ASAP. It's ridiculous to suggest that journalists have some kind of partisan agenda. In fact, people go into journalism because they sincerely believe in their mission to hold powerful people accountable and educate the public.

It certainly seems that there's a widening open space in the market for a social network offering unrestricted free speech to marginalized groups. Get all the "problematic" speakers in one spot and what would be the occasion for anybody to complain? It would be like the people complaining about what goes on in the back room at the strip club - you have to ask them what exactly they were doing in the back room at the strip club that they would be aware of what goes on there.

And then we would see which of our pols support free speech and which don't when the inevitable talk about shutting down the hate-mongers starts. The obvious solution to silencing the hate-mongers is to not listen to them and on the internet you actually have to take deliberate steps to hear what they have to say. Nobody's forcing you to go to sites you find offensive, you chose to go there so fuck off with the squealing about how offensive they are.

And you are clueless on social media. Once they obtained tens of millions of facebook contacts ... by fraud .. all the rest is free.

It's like me GIVING you 50 million pre-sorted email addresses. You could mail then as often as you needed, free (except for your own servers)

39,000 voters. Three states combined. Out of how many cast>

Sounds more like Clinton votes that knew she would be the winner, and are now blaming the Russians because their outcome was not what they wanted.

                  LAME. 39,000 votes.

                    CORRECTION: 39,000 voters

I doubt any of the facebook ads led to a single vote being changed.

                (lol)

                39,000 voters out of 139,000,000 = 0.03% = 3 100ths of 1 %
If barraging 50 million Facebook users did not change 0.03% of all votes, then you must be smarter than every advertiser and agency for the past 100 years.
                Or a Trump voter.

9.5% of popular vote voted against both candidates
22% of Trump's vote was anti-Hillary, NOT for him,, a record high. So Bernie would have beat him

                .

                  Funny you think that's proof.

                  1. David Nolan   7 years ago

                    Correct. Not proof.
                    Ridicule.

""The Russians spent a fraction of what just Media Matters alone did on ads, but they swung the entire election.""

What I find interesting is that people who believe the facebook ads gave Trump the win are doing so based on the ad hominem fallacy. They think some people are so dumb that a stupid facebook meme would change get them to vote a certain way.

        1. TrickyVic (old school)   7 years ago

Would get them to vote a certain way.

Proof reading. What the hell is it?

        2. David Nolan   7 years ago

That's not what ad hominem means. They weren't meme's
And their 50 million Facebook contacts were only part of what they did.

          1. TrickyVic (old school)   7 years ago

            Appeal to personal attack, No?

A contact does nothing. What was done to convince people to vote for Trump specifically?

            1. David Nolan   7 years ago

Didn't know what meme and ad hominem means.
Now doesn't know what contacts means.
Still ignores all the other things Russia did, like Wikileaks, plus Comey

              39,000 voters out of 139,000,000 = 0.03% = 3 100ths of 1 %

9.5% of popular vote voted against both candidates
22% of Trump's vote was anti-Hillary, NOT for him,, a record high. So Bernie would have beat him.

              1. TrickyVic (old school)   7 years ago

You're decent at personal attacks but you still have said what exactly convinced people to vote for Trump.

                1. David Nolan   7 years ago

Read again my second and third line.

It's not an attack, so more proof that you don't know what an ad hominem means. Or a meme. Or contacts. And (hysterically) refuse to grasp multiple contacts to 50 million Facebook users. To sway 0.03% of the vote.

Repeat: You now more than all the advertisers and agencies for the past 100 years, that advertising has NO impact at all.

A man who opened fire at a Florida park Saturday was thwarted with a shot from an armed bystander in the crowd.

Thanks for mentioning this type of story.

Many of these CCW crime prevention stories are not popular with mainstream media because it provides direct evidence that more law-abiding citizens with guns means greater chance of stopping criminal shooters trying to hurt as many people as possible.

So, last night as we discussed the facebook et. al. bannings, several folks here opined that including Alex Jones was a smoke screen to cover their ban of a list of right-wing groups and personalities. It sounded a little conspiracy theory - ish. Kinda nutty.

Then this morning I turn on the news and ..... they are only discussing Alex Jones. They play his nutty conspiracy theory stuff and opine that he deserved to be banned... because he's nutty. And he offended the parents of dead children. DId we mention that they were dead? And children? Well they were. And he offended their parents. And he's nutty.

That was the coverage. No mention of any other bans. Just that he violated their terms of service and they finally moved to enforce them.

    1. Cyto   7 years ago

Then I come to Reason, thinking that there will be a different take. Nope. Alex Jones is the story, the whole story and nothing but the story. No interesting angles. Nothing about collusion among all of the major internet players. Nothing about an ideological bent to the whole thing..... I mean, if there's only one case, how could you show a pattern? So let's not look at any of the other cases.

I'm a bit surprised. We libertarians have a strong contrarian streak. And sure, Jones is a nut-burger and adds little of import to the discourse. But this exists in a larger context, where a political movement is pushing on every front to shut down any speech that opposes them. It seems to me that there's got to be some nutty free speech advocate at Reason who is willing to take on this cabal of tech leaders and DNC operatives who are moving to ensure ideological conformity, if only in print form.

      2. Elilis Wyatt   7 years ago

where a political movement is pushing on every front to shut down any speech that opposes them.

There are two such movements, one on the right, the other on the left. No libertarian takes either side (on suppression). But fake libertarians do.

who are moving to ensure ideological conformity,

        Left and right.
You forgot to say proggie. Benghazi and MAGA.
