New York Inches Towards Legalizing Recreational Marijuana
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has appointed working group to draft a bill to legalize recreational marijuana.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has established a working group to draft legislation to legalize recreational marijuana. The group doesn't have a clear timeline, but they do appear to have a mandate: According to a Quinnipiac University Poll from May, 63 percent of the state's voters support "allowing adults to legally possess small amounts of marijuana for personal use."
The government has slowly been getting on board. In January, Cuomo asked the state's Department of Health and other agencies to study the "health, criminal justice and economic impacts of a regulated marijuana program." The resulting report endorsed legalization. Prohibition, it concluded, did little to combat the problems of drug use and only exacerbated existing injustices. The working group is the next step in the process.
The news out of New York is part of a broader trend. Thirty states and the District of Columbia permit the sale of medical marijuana, and nine states and D.C. allow for its recreational use. That would have been unimaginable just three decades ago when, according to a Pew poll, only a little over 15 percent of Americans supported legal pot. The number is higher than 60 percent today.
It's not just coastal elites and limousine liberals who are changing their views. Just this summer, voters in ultraconservative Oklahoma—a state whose governor once vowed to "do anything I can to prevent the legalization of marijuana"—gave medical marijuana a majority of 57 percent.
Meanwhile, the FDA recently approved the first drug derived from cannabis. Onetime drug warrior John Boehner now works for a marijuana lobbying firm. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson conceded some of the horrors of the drug war. And legalization has worked exactly like the prohibitionists said it wouldn't as Nevada drew in nearly $195 million in legal marijuana sales in the first half of this year. New York will soon give us another milestone—and that's good news, no matter what nonsense Jeff Sessions may tell you.

It's a trap.
"Of course, upon purchasing marijuana, you must turn in your guns. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation."
...and all male must turn in their testicles to show their support of sexual equality among the genders.
Maybe instead of NY suing Trump over perfectly constitutional actions, NY could push to decriminalize drugs since the US Constitution does not support a ban on any product or service.
Or maybe its interesting for NY to act like its a trailblazer to legalize weed after almost 50% of US states have legalized marijuana.
US Constitution does not support a ban on any product or service.
With one big exception.

S-Slavery?
Some dollars are more equal than others.
New Jersey Democrats promised to legalize recreational marijuana during their campaign last year when they faced a Libertarian running for governor. Now, New York Democrats are doing the same. Libertarians aren't Republicans who smoke pot. Libertarians are Democrats who want to legalize pot.
As the DEA says, the modern marijuana is much more dangerous than the older marijuana, and is a gateway drug to LSD, the most addictive drug ever.
A drug enforcement officer promoting drug enforcement!?!? Be still my heart!
Rockabilly joins the conversation to promote backwardness and authoritarianism (although no bigotry so far, at least not this time).
Right-wing goobers have speech rights, too!
Somebody doesn't know shit about LSD's addictiveness.
My first impression was that Rockabilly was being sarcastic though it is kind of hard to tell.
Yeah, Rock was being sarcastic. LSD loses its effect after two weeks of continuous use, max?your body gets acclimated to it quickly. I was pointing out that Kirkland doesn't know shit.
Gotcha.
Has anyone actually tried that? I don't see how you could drop acid for two weeks straight and come out of it normal.
Leary, Ram Dass, and some friends tried that, and this book was the result.
Whether that counts as "coming out of it normal" is open to interpretation.
Were Leary and Ram Dass _ever_ normal? I doubt that a normal person would want to be stoned for 2 weeks.
Rev. K joins the conversation to show that he has no sarcasm meter or sense of humor.
Plenty of conservatives are ardent drug warriors and fans of abusive policing, with positions sharpened during the Trump era.
The contention that Rockabilly bucks that trend is evidence-free.
Remind us again how much you hate bigots.
Remind me how libertarian right-wingers are.
Or claim to be.
This is the difference between Tony and the Rev.
No matter what anyone else says, I can't help but like Tony. His politics might be driving us to gulag nation, but on a personal level, he comes off as a decent guy.
The Rev, on the other hand, is utterly joyless.
Rev - are you a snake handler?
Did you know the modern marijuana is much worse than ever and is a gateway drug to hell, rock and roll, and loose women?
LSD is the bomb.
Fuck yeah!
LSD is the most addictive drug ever?
Gee, I thought it was nicotine.
I stand corrected.
There is nothing that says limited government more than increasing government into every aspect of your life, but keeping weed and abortion legal.
Libertarians are Democrats who want to legalize pot.
No, not really. Libertarians want to legalize pot because the government has no business telling free people what to put into their bodies and because of the drug war's record of complete failure.
Democrats who want to legalize and regulate and tax marijuana just see a nice shiny new revenue stream. That and they have to make sure that the regulations and taxes increase the price of legal pot enough that the black market dealers can still undercut the price of the legal stuff, thereby necessitating the continuation of the drug war and everything that entails (wouldn't want to upset one of their largest donor bases - police unions).
If Democrats like Cuomo really wanted to legalize pot on principles of increasing liberty, they wouldn't need to appoint a working group to study it. That gives away the game.
This cynical asshole gets it.
NYC Dems would never legalize if it took away a reason for the police to arrest anyone they want at any time they want and take their stuff. Unless they provide alternative means to jusify the arrest of deplorables and the seizure of property, this idea is DOA. The public employee unions will make sure of that.
How many grams of the good stuff would I need to smoke before Democrat Socialism sounds like a good idea?
Hey man, I don't need your permission
Just don't form it into loosies or have a magazine that carries more than seven doobs.
Thanks Fist for the Kindly advise .
Have a great evening and I'm smoking the marijuana right now and if you were here, and if you wanted some, why I'd offer it to you as a way of saying ' I enjoy reading your comments on the internets. '
Another victory for the liberal-libertarian alliance against the forces of authoritarianism and conservatism. It's the American way!
Libertarians: Let's see what's the next victimless crime we can abolish from the law books.
"Liberals": Let's see. Hmm. What else can we tax around here?
lol - but in 'liberal' CA, it's still a prescribed drug whereas in the more conservative CO, it's no longer illegal.
So as others have told you, the liberals in NY want more power and will use 'legalizing' marijuana to do so, as they are authoritarians, just as you are.
An old, racist, senile authoritarian. It's you - wear the label proudly and make all your progressive friends love you.
But in the end, you'll still be an old, racist, senile authoritarian.
Open wider, Michael S. Langston.
Progressives are not done pushing all of this damned progress, science, tolerance, education, and reason down the throats of conservatives.
Rev. Kirkland,
I'd advise you against smoking the modern marijuana as it is a gateway drug to rock and roll, loose women, and hell.
It's amazing to hear a Rev brag about his love of science. Different churches have different relationships to science. I think the publication of germ theory was a milestone in the split between progressives and conservatives. There was this researcher in France who invented a way to eliminate germs from milk so babies wouldn't get sick. Then there were the progressives that John Swift mocked in A Modest Proposal. When progressives learned that germs made babies sick, they figured that babies are storage tanks for germs and got to work justifying the elimination of babies from low income communities. Darwin's followers like Marx and Galton were progressive leaders in their generation, but I prefer Pasteur.

Pot is a gateway to harder drugs, addiction, crime and death. Is that really what you want, New York?
You're not funny.
Too late!
My gate seems to be jammed.
jammed full of something
Guarantee they're going to slap a HUGE tax on it just like California did (33% on top of the high purchase price). Most people will continue to buy from the black market. But hopefully they'll stop arresting so many people.
But hopefully they'll stop arresting so many people.
Fewer arrests. More choking/shooting deaths now that it's just tax evasion (like with loose cigarettes).
Fewer arrests
*Less* arrests, trash person.
*Fewer*, because you can count the number of arrests. I propose dueling at dawn to settle this.
But hopefully they'll stop arresting so many people.
Yeah... let's see how hard they fight the drug war when they're loosing out on tax revenue.
And legalization has worked exactly like the prohibitionists said it wouldn't as Nevada drew in nearly $195 million in legal marijuana sales in the first half of this year.
A better metric for success would be the number of lives not destroyed by the war on drugs.
Agreed. Unfortunately that metric doesn't sell for Statists. They don't care about how many lives they destroy.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has appointed working group to draft a bill to legalize recreational marijuana.
How many people does it take to look in the law book and find the law prohibiting something, write down the title and chapter, and say "this is the law that should be repealed"?
Please, Juice. Think of the JOBS!
Well. They can't just remove a law. They have to add a new law that narrowly redefines the existing law. With 300 pages of kickbacks and exceptions.
Yeah, Juice.
Accepting bribes, kickbacks and "campaign donations" is not as easy as it seems.
Cuomo's peeps not historically keen on "repeal"...give the little authoritarians time to figure some things out
"Apple does not tolerate hate speech, and we have clear guidelines that creators and developers must follow to ensure we provide a safe environment for all of our users," an Apple spokesperson said in a statement on Monday.
And then Apple stock plummeted, right? RIGHT?!
I haven't listened to an Alex Jones podcast in about 10 years. Has it changed that much? Is it now hate? Before it was all conspiracy theories, but that was starting to get stale. That's why I stopped listening altogether because he would just say the same shit over and over. But from what I understand he's very against Muslims now, which is pretty ironic, because he would go to great lengths to blame anyone but Muslim terrorists for 9/11 and other attacks. *shrug* I guess he figured out he could make way more money from hating Muslims than from spinning conspiracy theories. Or, the latter was a hell of a lot more work.
That douchebag Molyneux discovered the same thing. When he was an ancap, he was struggling. As soon as started spouting racialist nonsense, the donations started pouring in, no doubt.
Apple is simply showing the world how much tolerance and acceptance it has for people who disagree with them.

Marijuana causes mental illness.
That says a lot about a culture planning to legalize and normalize it.
Irresponsible people forfeit their freedoms.
