Brickbat: Handicapped Accessible

Evelyn Strahle, 91, says she is trapped in her home after Prince George's County, Maryland, officials forced her son to remove a wheelchair ramp he'd built in front of the house she shares with her 94-year-old husband. Officials say the son had not gotten the necessary permits.

Man what kind of assho-
Prince George's County, Maryland
Ah.
that wasn't the process and I had to go through the long route
Christ...
Happened in San Diego as well.
The local TV Expos? reporter ("The Turko Files") ran it on his show. The woman couldn't leave her house without it but it wasn't up to code; it had been built by volunteers from her church or something. Had a feel good ending though. Outraged viewers forced the County to change their attitude about it.
Ha ha no, people sent in donations to hire a "real" contractor who rebuilt it, naturally.

You had me going for a second there. This being San Diego CA they probably gave the code enfoercement official who insisted on the ramp being taken down a damn medal or something.
I'd be happy to given him a medal. Two medals.
Half-inch in diameter. Made of tungsten. Right in the kneecaps. Zzzzzzzzt. That's how the Provisional IRA dealt with idiots, and it's an idea whose time has come.
They would have ignored the violation if he had enough cash in the freezer to pay them off.
I'm surprised those smarmy bastards don't require a permit for the dismantling of the ramp.
They probably do. It's a lesson right out of Maduro's Venezuela: punish the folks either way. Maryland officials should take notes.
Example: a factory owner there was fined for not having toilet paper in the factory's bathroom (the nation wide shortage precluded that). So the owner got smart. He located a private source and bought a truckload to make sure there'd be plenty of toilet paper on hand for the foreseeable future. When the truck arrived with the delivery, government agents descended on the scene and arrested the factory owner for hoarding. See, they've refined screwing non-government people to a fine art down there.
"The production models we've tried so far have failed and the responsibility is ours, mine and yours," Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro told his ruling PSUV party congress, as Venezuela looks to tackle chronic inflation the International Monetary Fund predicted would reach one million percent this year.
"Enough with the whining... we need to produce with or without (outside) aggression, with or without blockades, we need to make Venezuela an economic power," he added late Monday, with the country grappling with a four-year long recession.
"No more whining, I want solutions comrades!"
Whatever you do you don't want to find yourself trapped inside Prince George's County, Maryland.
Any bet that it would have to be built by a ' approved " contractor ?
That's it exactly. Everything in Maryland is a racket.
The best part is that there are so many bureaucrats in this department that the direct had to find out about it on the news.
"Prince George's County mailed an order to the parents, demanding they show to District Court May 16th."
Amazingly the lowly inspector could get court order without the Top Men knowing about it?
The best part is that there are so many bureaucrats in this department that the direct had to find out about it on the news.
More likely he's just going into full CYA mode.
He learned it from Obama.
Didn't a wise person once say that government is just a name for the things we all do together?
I guess nothing says "team effort" like barricading some elderly folks in their own house!
Gotta cut the social security roles somehow.
It definitely was NOT a wise person. It was a left wing apologist.
Cops, man.

But this is a nation of laws! People who violate OUR laws are criminals! No special dispensantion! No amnesty to violators!
Exactly. The ramp was illegal. It was an illegal ramp because it didn't have the proper papers. Therefore it needed to be deported. No excuses. If the woman didn't want to be trapped in her home then she should have gotten permission and paperwork from the government. She's lucky her children weren't taken from her.
Nice play on Rule of Law where the Socialists in Commifornia have created such a non-Constitutional burden for even common things.
The USA should just try Anarchy, like Sarcasmic wants. You convinced us.
Show me where I have said I have said I am an anarchist. You claimed that I said it. Prove it, or admit that you are a liar.
You said you're a Minianarchist. That's anarchist.
Shut up liar!
That's not what I said and we both know it.
Yeah, you're a Nanarchist.
You're certainly not a Libertarian.
Everyone except the noobs know different. You are only embarrassing yourself. Keep it up.
Keep denying it and keep writing your little non-Libertarian attacks on here.
You dont fool anyone.
Luckily for you, most Libertarians like to discuss various political topics and are tolerant of other political views.
Says the guy who has never read Bastiat, Hayek or Hazlitt.
I never said that I haven't read those writers/economists/philosophers/painters.
You didn't have to. Your responses to people who have says it all.
What else havent I read?
You know just enough names to sound dangerous.
Its why you dont have discussions with people. Your responses to people who have says it all.
I have discussions with plenty of people.
It is easier when you share some common premises. Libertarian stuff. I don't know what else you haven't read, but I know you haven't read those things because when people come at you with premises based upon those things you start shouting names at them.
You want to have a discussion, try listening to what people actually say instead of shouting names like a child.
Oh young man, I know calling people what they are politically is considered calling someone 'names' for you.
You're an Anarchist and not a Libertarian.
I am a Libertarian and not an Anarchist.
Be the proud Narchist that you are.
Explain your political premise as much as possible, so everyone will agree to call you a Minarchist rather than an Anarchist.
Everyone who knows what minarchist means will have a good chuckle every time it happens. We have until he realizes it is a word and bothers to look it up.
So, practically indefinitely.
If he knew what the word meant he would probably identify with it. But the embarrassment would be to overwhelming.
Yeah, minianarchist means Anarchist to everyone else except that little group of Anarchists.
Why? Because Anarchists have never convinced anyone outside the Anarchist group that there are such things as anarcho-capitalists, Anarchist, and Mini-Anarchists.
I actually would love to discuss Anarchy related topics as I have questions and find certain aspects of Anarchy fascinating.
I actually would love to discuss Anarchy related topics as I have questions and find certain aspects of Anarchy fascinating.
There are plenty of anarchists on this site to have that conversation with. Unfortunately I am not one of them, so I can't answer your questions.
If you want to discuss minarchy, as in minimal rule, then I can have that conversation.
minanarchy is anarchy but I get it, you want to say you're Libertarian without Libertarianism.
Its very telling that you dont want to say that you're Libertarian but dont want a Constitution, Rule of Law, small and limited government under a Constitution, or a Constitutional Democratic Republic. You use "archy" in your term on purpose.
You want a volunteerist group to manage collective duties. Anarchy but not roaming hordes of Berserkers burning, raping, and pillaging.
Dude, you're being a yappy little dog again.
I've stated to you numerous times what I believe the role of government and law should be within society, and your response is to say "No you don't! This is what you really believe! Nanny nanny boo boo!"
Grow up.
Because you are talking out two sides of your mouth.
You lie and when you get caught, you change your tune temporarily.
Intentionally misspelling something as an attempt at argumentation just makes you look like an illiterate idiot.
Intentionally misspelling something as an attempt at argumentation just makes you look like an illiterate idiot.
A dishonest, illiterate idiot.
Yeah, you illiterate idiot. You misspelled Anarchy.
If you want to discuss minarchy, as in minimal rule, then I can have that conversation. -me
you dont want... small and limited government -you
Are you obtuse, dishonest, or stupid? Which is it?
You dont want small and limited government.
Government has legal power. You dont want government to have legal power because that messes up your Anarchy-land.
We all see that you're the stupid one, which is why you dont have discussions.
Embrace the Anarchy goober.
This comes from that conversation about the origin of law, doesn't it. You seemed almost rational until I made a distinction between the laws of society and the laws of man, and you went totally off the rails. Freaked right the fuck out.
I've seen others make the same distinction, and watched your head explode shortly after.
Yet I'm the one who can't have a discussion.
Tell you what, try looking up Hayek and spontaneous order. Or try some Bastiat.
I, along with those two authors, recognize a role for government in society. Especially in the enforcement of the law.
Hayek described spontaneous order as "from human action, not human design." (that's not an exact quote, but it's close enough) By that definition law emerges from how people interact with each other. Not from men in government. The job of government is to codify and enforce the laws that emerge from spontaneous order.
You can try to digest that and have a discussion like an adult, or you can continue to call me names like a child.
I will be pleasantly surprised if you decide to act like an adult.
I'm out for the day, but I will look this up later. See if you can be an adult and have a conversation, or if you'll continue to be a child and call me names.
I fully expect the latter, because that's what people do when they don't understand something. Rather than admit that they don't get it, they shout down the other person. I've seen it a thousand times.
"I don't understand, so that means you're stupid."
Yeah, sure.
I already blew your argument out of the water with a simple example. Since you are a little kid and dont understand easy concepts, I will explain it again.
-You are okay with volunteer courts hearing cases on property rights.
-You are not okay with this volunteer government making laws based on society and enforcing via force.
-How does a judge keep order in the property rights hearing without rules on basic court etiquette?
You cannot use force to keep people quiet so a court hearing can take place.
I already blew your argument out of the water with a simple example.
Um, no. Actually. You never blew anything anywhere. Well, not that I know of. NTTAWWT.
I explain my beliefs, and you say "Nuh uh, this straw man is what you really believe! Watch me demolish it! Goober! I win! Yap yap yap yap yap!"
You're just a yappy dog. Nothing more.
Just what you complain about.
You dont answer questions or discuss things...
You resort to name calling.
Be proud to be the anarchist that you are.
And which political party are we talking about there?
Is it one that claims the other party is the one that hates the elderly?
Is it the one that claims only government can care for the elderly?
Is it the one that claims it does not want to take permit fees from 90 year old handicapped - - - - -
Never mind.
Welcome to the revolution
You think nominal party matters, or even differentiates?
This sort of thing is done by the un-named '3rd party' of American politics, the Bureaucrats.
The Ds and Rs are merely enablers on the grift. The Bs are now the core problem.
They are legion.
As well as petty, authoritarian, privileged, and nearly untouchable.
My job used to take me into a federal building on a regular basis. I got to know some of the drones. One day the building got a new head honcho, so I asked one of the drones if they expected any changes. The reaction was uncontrollable laughter. They do what they want.
You should see how people laugh at Minarchists Anarchists.
I guess the pivotal word is party. Or is that Party?
If we ever get time machines, we need to make sure we put bullets, bronze swords, flint arrow heads, etc. in the heads of any people who claim they have jurisdiction over others.
But that would've started pre-humanity! Probably pre-vertebrate.
I agree that both Democrats and Republicans are not as good as Libertarians on fiscal restraint, freedoms, free market, property rights, and butt sex.
This story was about the Socialists in Commifornia creating an overly burdensome Socialist state. Even under public pressure, they still look for ways to avoid responsibility or change the Nanny-State.
That was an example of Democrats not Libertarians or Republicans.
Just some local government jerks. All they needed to do was send out an inspector and let them know if anything was not up to code. Then process the permit.
This is not about democrats, republicans or any of that. Local government can be the worst. Give someone a little power and this stuff happens.
