A grim picture of privacy and civil liberties at the airport. Under the "Quiet Skies" program, federal air marshals are targeting people who "are not under investigation by any agency and are not in the Terrorist Screening Data Base," according to an internal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) bulletin from March.

These agents "have begun following ordinary US citizens not suspected of a crime or on any terrorist watch list and collecting extensive information about their movements and behavior," reports The Boston Globe. The memo says the program aims to catch threats "posed by unknown or partially known terrorists," but insiders say there's little consistency or criteria for how or why travelers get tracked.

TSA officials would not confirm to the paper that the program exists. But documents reviewed by the paper show that "thousands of unsuspecting Americans have been subjected to targeted airport and inflight surveillance, carried out by small teams of armed, undercover air marshals," writes the Globe's Jana Winter.

Signs of suspicious behavior include:

  • being "abnormally aware of surroundings" (which apparently includes things like boarding last or watching the boarding area "from afar");
  • exhibiting supposed "behavioral indicators" of up-to-no-goodness (including sweating, having body odor, rubbing one's hands together, face touching, or "other"); and
  • sleeping on a flight, either "briefly" or "for most of" it.

Federal agents are also instructed to take notes on whether a traveler has lost or gained weight, changed his or her hair style, shaved, grown a beard, or gotten any tattoos or piercings since last being spied on; whether a traveler checked baggage; whether a traveler possessed a phone and or computer; whether a traveler left the airport via tax, bus, private vehicle, public transit, or a rental car; and how many times he or she go to the bathroom. Winter adds:

Deploying air marshals to gather intelligence on civilians not on a terrorist watch list is a new assignment, one that some air marshals say goes beyond the mandate of the US Federal Air Marshal Service. Some also worry that such domestic surveillance might be illegal. Between 2,000 and 3,000 men and women, so-called flying FAMs, work the skies.

It's not just federal employees who are spying while you're flying. The Department of Homeland Security has been training airline and airport staff on how to "spot the signs" of human trafficking, with a list about as asinine and broad as the above TSA criteria. So far, this has led to an array of travelers getting harassed and detained because some airline attendant had a "hunch" that interracial families are probably human traffickers.

The latest example, told in full absurdist splendor by the Daily Mail, involves Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant Wesley Hirata informing the authorities that there was an Asian man with three Caucasian girls on a flight. The Mail calls Hirata and her colleagues "heroes" for "alerting cops to [a] human trafficking suspect who boarded a flight with three young girls."

Two of the "young girls" were adults. The FBI investigated and found no evidence of anything bad going on. "Regardless," the Mail reports, "Hirata has said he's pleased" with himself for calling the FBI on some totally innocent travelers.

Why you can't download 3D-printed gun plans in Pennsylvania. After Texas nonprofit Defense Distributed published plans for 3D-printing an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, Pennsylvania authorities filed a lawsuit trying to block residents from downloading the it. In an emergency hearing least night, a federal court agreed that Defense Distributed should block Pennsylvanians from accessing the plans, at least for now.

"In New Jersey, officials also had sought to block downloading of the plans for that state's residents by means of a cease-and-desist letter," notes The Inquirer. "But Defense Distributed challenged that effort on Sunday by filing a federal lawsuit in Texas."

Defense Distributed Director Cody Wilson told the paper: "Americans have the right to this data. We have the right to share it. Pennsylvania has no right to come in and tell us what we can and can't share on the internet."

New lawsuits accuse federal immigration facilities of quashing freedom of religion. Public defender Lisa Hay filed the suit on behalf of 123 asylum-seekers intercepted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on May 31 and taken to the Sheridan Federal Correctional Facility in Sheridan, Oregon.

The suit claims that the prison is refusing to allow religious accommodations for Sikh and Hindu detainees. "The Sikh detainees have not been allowed to wear turbans and instead have either been uncovered or forced to make do with towels, t-shirts, hats, or other inadequate coverings," states the suit, and Hindu prisoners are reportedly being denied religious texts.

Hay has also filed petitions on behalf of many of the asylum seekers, alleging a litany of abuses and poor conditions at the facility.

"Here we have come to save our lives but I think we will die here in jail," one asylum-seeker is quoted in an affidavit.

New lawsuits accuse federal immigration facilities of quashing freedom of religion.

I'm getting whiplash on which side is for religious freedom at any given time.

    1. Bee Tagger   7 years ago

Try to relax the neck muscles as much as possible, there should be enough whiplash from all directions to keep it stable.

      Hello.

      What's that popular prog-speak phrase?

If you have nothing to hide...

    3. Modus Pwnens   7 years ago

Keep in mind that the supposed "religious freedom" being "quashed" in this case is the freedom to get free shit at taxpayer expense. There is no constitutional right to have the government help you practice your religion. Indeed, I would think that providing Hindu texts on demand would violate separation of church and state.

      1. Shirley Knott   7 years ago

If they provide Christian texts, they must provide the others.
Either equal support or equal lack of support ? equal protection under the law.

        1. Modus Pwnens   7 years ago

          What about Pastafarian texts?

Also, who determines what constitutes a religious text? What if I want the Roman Missal instead of a Bible?

        2. Rhywun   7 years ago

Yeah so don't provide any texts.

We all know this is an attempt to #resist anyway, it has nothing to with religious freedom. They could treat them like kings and accommodate every last peculiarity and the lawyers will find something else to sue over.

      2. Sometimes a Great Notion   7 years ago

That maybe true of the Hindu text but presumably a Sikh would have traveled with their turban. The government probably confiscated them as unapproved contraband and gave them a Trump Tower towel, because people are saying they are the greatest towels ever.

    4. SQRLSY One   7 years ago

      Mental whiplash, you say!?!?

THIS is one of the applications where trans-species GMO into the germ line of humans is called for! WHY do I say that, you ask?

I am told that woodpeckers have had to evolve very special quadruple-plus or who-knows-what, padding around their brains, to protect them from their constant jack-hammer-like high-frequency, high-amplitude wood-pecking activities. If there really are Government Almighty supporters who support Government Almighty in all things, at all times, I must wonder, have they had themselves genetically engineered to steal some brain-padding genes from Woody the Woodpecker? Or would they like to do the same?

I personally have stolen some some genes from Woody, truth be told, but they are NOT for the brain padding!

Pro-lifers won't advance their cause if they insist on depicting abortion as murder:

    1. Rev. Arthur L. Kirkland   7 years ago

Authoritarian right-wing bigots prancing about in unconvincing libertarian drag, believing they're fooling anyone other than each other?

      That's funnier.

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   7 years ago

What's funnier than that are solipsistic hicklibs who think their views are the only ones that exist.

    2. Red Rocks White Privilege   7 years ago

What precisely does she believe they should depict abortion as in order to advance their cause? Even the majority of people who consider themselves "pro-choice" want abortion to be restricted, a plurality to the first three months. The majority still consider it to be morally wrong, even if they support keeping it legal. So what exactly does the pro-life faction lose by holding the line that abortion is murder? Doesn't that show a dedication to "principle," regardless of whether it's better for their cause in the long term, that some people here are always going on about?

Support for abortion at any time in the pregnancy, up to the point that the baby is in the birth canal, is a distinct minority and probably limited to cat ladies and dangerhairs who think having a kid will get in the way of their daily wine consumption and superficial bucket list chasing.

    3. Rhywun   7 years ago

This magazine is dead-set (oops... poor choice of words?) against the possibility that not all libertarians are "pro-choice". There is one writer here who isn't and she isn't around much anymore but otherwise it's kind of the default position around here.

Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort goes on trial starting tomorrow over his consulting work in Ukraine.

The bad job he did there was criminal.

    1. Rev. Arthur L. Kirkland   7 years ago

If Manafort flips, he likely gets leniency (probably after disgorgement) but his information could be invaluable.

If Manafort refuses to cooperate, he likely spends most or all of his remaining years in prison and has his assets seized and forfeited.

I expect to be content either way. And it's a tough call on preference.

      1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

        When he is acquitted?

I fully expect Lefty claims of Russians hacking the jury's minds to steal that conviction.

      2. UnrepentantCurmudgeon   7 years ago

This Russian agent stuff is the new lefty porn. It remains almost hysterically ironic that the purveyors of the modern "red scare" are the left itself.

I bet Scalia thought he would be on the bench for many more years too.

      1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

I hope she has a long happy life....just not on the SCOTUS.

She is entombed proof that Supreme Court Justices should have term limits of 20 years or max age of 75 or 80. She cannot even stay alert during State of the Union speeches.

If Congress had any balls, they would impeach her for incapacity.

Funniest thing is that because of her selfishness, she will croak soon and Trump will get to replace her. Same thing with Breyer.

Scalia was gullible enough to believe a lot of dopey things.

Scalia was a fat, slovenly, male smoker.

Ginsburg is a thin, fit, disciplined woman.

A reasoning person would have bet on Ginsburg against Scalia, and her prospects continue to seem strong. Average life expectancy at her age approximates seven years. She exhibits good judgment and habits and has access to the best medical care.

Regarding Trump, an average 72-year-old male's left expectancy is nearly 14 years. A fat, undisciplined, sedentary male with a bad diet and stress-inducing lifestyle? That one might be similar to the life expectancy of a spry, careful 84-year-old woman, making Trump and Ginsburg close to a pick-'em.

Trump And 'New York Times' Publisher Clash Over Their Private Meeting

"That drew a sharp response from Sulzberger rebutting the president. According to a statement from the Times, the July 20 meeting was off the record at the request of White House aides. But when the president disclosed the meeting via Twitter, Sulzberger said the off-the-record deal was no longer in effect. "

"I told him that although the phrase 'fake news' is untrue and harmful, I am far more concerned about his labeling journalists 'the enemy of the people,'" Sulzberger said. "I warned that this inflammatory language is contributing to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence."
NPr covers meeting between trump and NYT Publisher

This is worth Trump being elected by itself. The media is now scared that Americans dont believe their crap propaganda anymore. The media still is fooling itself that they dont lie.

If she can't demand a husband then how do we expect her to demand salvation?
Whether I have or have not gone to college, had sex before marriage, aquired debt, gotten a tattoo, etc. does not make me any less worthy of the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ, so what right does any earthly man (or woman) have to call me less than worthy to simply be his wife due to the same criteria?! Christ > humanity. Be careful that you preach Christ and not your own ideals.

    1. Modus Pwnens   7 years ago

So that means she'd marry an unemployed, impoverished weakling who smells like dog shit, because Jesus loves him.

    2. Enjoy Every Sandwich   7 years ago

She can demand anything she wants, but she's in for a big disappointment if she thinks the entire world is going to change to eagerly meet her demands.

    3. Red Rocks White Privilege   7 years ago

It's very telling that these women are demanding salvation the same way they demand partners, as if they are entitled to it simply for being born. Look how they invert the meaning of "the pearl of great price," which is about God's kingdom, inward towards their own narcissistic impulses.

The whole point of being "saved" in the Christian religion is that you throw away your pride and humble yourself before God, admit you're a sinner, and that you will constantly strive to follow Christ's direction, not claim that being "a child of God" automatically qualifies you for the blessings of Heaven.

    4. Chipper Morning Baculum   7 years ago

You read some weird blogs, Longtorso. I think it's kind of cool when Christian women try to mask their love of BDSM into some kind of "honor Christ by obeying your husband" ethic.

I used to live next to a guy who was on the job with Philly PD. No snitches because the deceased usually "deserved it" and the community was glad some vigilante finished off the mugger/rapist/whatever. Cops didn't really try too hard to solve many of the murders of these low lifes.

      1. Weigel's Cock Ring   7 years ago

And of course it goes without saying that if the cops get overly aggressive in trying to solve the crimes, that's more proof of how much they hate black people and want to punish them.

Signs of suspicious behavior include being "abnormally aware of surroundings" (which apparently includes things like boarding last or watching the boarding area "from afar")...

    From here:

TSA reminds summer travelers to be prepared for security

Stay Alert and Aware. TSA reminds passengers that they can play a role in keeping our nation's transportation systems safe. An alert and engaged public is one of TSA's layers of security. TSA encourages the traveling public to report suspicious bags or behavior. By remaining aware of their surroundings, the traveling public can help TSA ensure transportation remains safe and secure.

Burger King raises awareness of the pink tax with 'Chick Fries' that cost $1.40 more

Another decrepit brand gets infested with SJWs (a la Miss America, Marvel Comics, Hollywood studios). Nobody investing in BK in 2018 expects to make money, so it makes sense for them to virtue signal.

    1. Rhywun   7 years ago

So the fries are longer and take more time to prepare or are made out of special materials?

      1. Modus Pwnens   7 years ago

No, they just come in a pink box (snicker snicker).

        1. Rhywun   7 years ago

    2. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

One proposal on the House floor is H.R. 5464, the Pink Tax Repeal Act, which would give state attorneys general the authority to take civil action on behalf of aggrieved consumers. At the end of the Burger King spot, the company announced its support of the bill.

These companies virtue signalling that Capitalism is their enemy are making HUGE mistakes.

Capitalism is the only thing keeping a crappy burger joint like Burger King from bankruptcy.

      1. Modus Pwnens   7 years ago

Actually the free market is what drove BK toward bankruptcy. Creative destruction and all.

Pretty sure this is an attempt to (a) gain investment from wealthy leftists who expect no monetary return, and (b) raise the CEO's status among the elite community.

        1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

I thought the Chicken parts fries saved the company for now.

      2. Rhywun   7 years ago

would give state attorneys general the authority to take civil action on behalf of aggrieved consumers

I have no idea what that means but it sounds like it could put an awful lot of hairdressers and dry cleaners out of business. Yay, equality!

    3. BYODB   7 years ago

Remember when many women prided themselves on getting good deals? Well, the 'Pink Tax' means women, in general, are terrible at it now.

It's a gimmick that literally only works when your target demographic is bad at math and/or refuses to compare similar items.

Feel free to tar and feather me now, but this has been going on for decades and apparently someone just noticed yesterday. Don't like it, don't buy the product. That is apparently too simple even though the items are usually on the same aisle in most retail establishments.

Operation Chokepoint updated for the Trump era? Bank of America citizenship questions are causing alarm

Heh. Some of us have long warned the Left that the authoritarian programs they favor could come back to bite them if they fell into the wrong hands, which is inevitable in our political system. But did they listen? Fuck no. Will they learn their lesson from the Trump era? Fuck no.

I mean, he is not exactly wrong.

  39. Michael Cook   7 years ago

I once had a conversation with an airplane security analyst (not hard to do here in Boeing land where all my neighbors were aeronautical engineers) who declared: "If a major government sponsors terrorism against commercial air travel, it is over. We would be forced to a two-plane system for every trip. Passengers would have to surrender all the clothing they wear to the departure airport and change into coveralls and slippers that they will be issued. Then they would be X-rayed and in some cases would have to be quarantined for a day or two until any suspicious tubes passed through their digestive systems. All their carry-ons, electronic devices, and baggage will fly in a separate, cargo-only aircraft. At the arrival airport, hopefully all things will get re-united."

"We will be forced to that because of the impossibility of defeating the miniaturization of bombs and other weapons if enough money is put into their development."
