Presidential summit between Trump and Putin today. Displaying an interesting diplomatic tack ahead of his Monday morning meeting with Vladimir Putin, President Donald Trump opined that America's relationship with Russia "has NEVER been worse"—cold war, schmold war, amirite?—and that this situation is all our fault. These historically strained U.S.-Russia relations come "thanks to many years of U.S. foolishness and stupidity, and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!" Trump tweeted at 2:05 a.m.

Reactions from folks across the political spectrum were full of disbelief and scorn for Trump's statement, which comes on the heel of a new indictment of Russian intelligence officials for alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. election. Here is The Guardian's Moscow correspondent, for example:

Daring negotiating position from Trump before today's big meeting with Putin: It's our fault relations are bad and we're now too dysfunctional to fix them. https://t.co/aHfdWzRrjj

— Andrew Roth (@Andrew__Roth) July 16, 2018

And Cato Institute policy analyst Julian Sanchez:

This is profoundly embarassing. What could be more servile than blaming "U.S. foolishness" on the heels of an indictment meticulously detailing a Russian attack on us? https://t.co/hDG1aPlwPg

— Julian Sanchez (@normative) July 16, 2018

But at least some stakeholders—like, uh, Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs—seemed satisfied with Trump's assessment:

We agree https://t.co/7l087Qwmj3

Putin made Trump wait for him, arriving in the country around the time their meeting was supposed to start.

A classic Putin power move, showing he is the one who's time is most important. https://t.co/93nLrKAhXq

— Julia Ioffe (@juliaioffe) July 16, 2018

The very fact of the meeting taking place has raised suggestions of impropriety, though this has more to do with everyone's feels than the meeting per se taking place.

Every president in modern history has held formal meetings with Russian/Soviet leaders. It would be surprising for it *not* to happen. Yet because the US political climate is so crazed, this meeting tomorrow will be portrayed as deeply unusual -- when it's utterly ordinary

— Michael Tracey (@mtracey) July 16, 2018

Trump told reporters at the start of the meeting: "I really think the world wants to see us get along. I think we have great opportunities together as two countries that frankly we have not been getting along very well for the last number of years."

FREE MINDS

Newspaper must pull details about mob-linked cop's plea agreement. After failing to file plea-deal documents under seal, prosecutors found details about detective John Sara Balian's alleged ties to the Mexican mafia now running in the Los Angeles Times. On Saturday, a judge granted Balian's motion for a temporary restraining order, which means the Times must remove any details from the article that were gleaned from the published plea agreement. "To the extent any article is published prior to issuance of this order, it shall be deleted and removed forthwith," ruled U.S. District Judge John F. Walter.

This is unusual. "Typically, courts take into account if information was already published," Times attorney Kelli Sager said in a statement. "Where it is no longer secret, the point of the restraining order is mooted. To order a publication to claw it back doesn't even serve the interest that may be intended."

FREE MARKETS

Overzealous regulators quashing entrepreneurship. What happens "when the city comes for your home-based business?" An increasing number of people are finding out, note the R Street Institute's C. Jarrett Dieterle and Shoshana Weissmann in a new Wall Street Journal op-ed.

As more people work from home in fields that traditionally required office space, U.S. municipalities are increasingly turning their attention toward these home-based business owners. Without seeing clients at home, putting up advertisements, etc., freelancers and small-time entrepreneurs seldom see themselves as people in need of special licenses just to do the work they do from desks tucked inside their primary residences. But officials often see things differently.

"In 1992 there were about 16 million home businesses in the U.S., according to census data," report Dieterle and Weissmann. "By 2012 that number grew to 27 million. Today about half of all American businesses are home-based, according to the Small Business Administration. At the same time, local governments have become more aggressive in cracking down on home-based businesses."

...and that this situation is all our fault.

Finally, a president who has the guts to go around and apologize for America.

    1. Rufus The Monocled   7 years ago

      Hello.

      "Make human rights great again."

Says the people who kept quiet while Obama drone killed Americans without due process while Trump signs a law punishing sex trafficking.

      1. Allen Garvin   7 years ago

Sex trafficking is the 2010s equivalent of satanic rituals in daycare--something so vanishingly rare it doesn't really exist, but no amount of money is to big to spend combating it.

Or, I guess it really isn't so rare, when law enforcement redefines sex work and topless dancing as sex trafficking, and then throws the "victims" in jail.

      2. Chinny Chin Chin   7 years ago

Hey! Secret meetings between the Pres and a team of lawyers who nod and clap like trained seals at his kill list IS due process.

        1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Obama got to murder Americans via drone, so Lefties think trump wants to do that too.

          1. Chinny Chin Chin   7 years ago

Unfortunately, the 8-year-old daughter of Anwar al-Awlaki (one of the US citizens Obama killed... little Nawar was also a US citizen) was killed in a SEAL raid last year.

So it seems that the Left's fear isn't entirely unfounded.

  2. Fist of Etiquette   7 years ago

Trump told Piers Morgan at the Daily Mail that he understands fears about Roe v. Wade being overturned but that "It could be a long time before a case ever gets up there."

So find something fresher to freak the fuck out about.

Have you noticed that the media has moved away from calling white nationalists "Nazis" or "Neo-Nazis"?

The media is scared and aware that Americans know that Nazis are Socialists.

              1. Happy Chandler   7 years ago

So the fact that the Republican party has been nominating actual, self described Nazis this cycle means that Republicans are the real socialists?

                1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Major Political Parties in the USA dont have a track record of kicking candidates out of the Party.

Democrats had Nazis run under that party banner and Republicans had Nazis run under that party banner.

The GOP is becoming the big spending Nanny-State and absorbing Democrats. The Democratic Party is becoming the 100% Communist Party.

Nazis and Communists always fought to see who was the most powerful Socialist.

                  1. Happy Chandler   7 years ago

Right. The Nazis showed their socialist bona fides by executing trade union leaders, right?

                  1. Happy Chandler   7 years ago

Socialism works, is getting more popular, and wins elections.

                    Socialism isn't communism.

                    Fascists aren't socialist.

                    1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Oh Happy, Socialism is getting less popular and more fringe because its toeing the Communist line.

Historically, Lefties twist their monikers to avoid what they are. Some Marxists called themselves Progressives. Progressives then called themselves Liberals. Liberals then called themselves SJWs.

In the end, its Socialism and if they want all to belong to the state, then its Communism.

                    2. Happy Chandler   7 years ago

                      That's not actually true.

Although that poll is flawed because socialism and capitalism are compatible.

Remember the lesson of Bernie. Well, that, and Bernie had a push from the Russians.

My position hasn't changed on this for years - poor relations with Russia are absolutely the fault of the US and the UK. We imposed Yeltsin and drastic economic changes so that our oligarchs could loot their country, we continue to expand NATO to their borders, we start trouble in Georgia and a coup in Ukraine, we bomb Serbia, and do literally nothing but disrespect and talk shit about them while threatening their survival.
Russia is a natural ally, but TOP MEN want to keep Europe propped up.

      1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

I would never say Russia is an ally. They are not the enemy that they were as the USSR.

Russia has a fetish with re-incorporating all former Russia territory back into Mother Russia. Putin is a strongman from the KGB era who uses force to remain in power. Russia wanted to use corruption to get Ukraine back into the fold. Ukrainians hate Russians. The Russians have treated Ukraine horrible for over 100 years. Ukraine is in the Russia sphere of influence though.

It cannot be tolerated for countries to invade other nations. Its bad for business and ultimately drags the USA into the conflict sooner or later.

Playing these fools is really the only US choice. Let Russia waste resources on acting tough instead of reinvesting back into their economy.

Europe is also not an ally. They are not our enemy either.

    1. EscherEnigma   7 years ago

      It's mostly about Putin.

From 2008 to 2012, he wasn't in charge, and the country's international affairs were different. He got re-elected at the end of 2012, and that's when the relationship started taking a nosedive again.

We aren't the only the government where elections change our international behavior in drastic ways.

      1. Just Say'n   7 years ago

"From 2008 to 2012, he wasn't in charge, and the country's international affairs were different."

He was prime minister, while Medved was the president. But, Putin was clearly in charge, as even President Obama told Medved on a hot mic to tell Putin that he would have more flexibility once he was re-elected.

There was no change in Russia's foreign policy between 2008 and 2012. And there has been no change in America's foreign policy since the end of the Cold War.

        1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Exactly. Putin waited to be super aggressive until Obama could have his back in late 2013.

It's almost as if these people are all ignoramuses.

Here's a story about why Putin hated Hillary, from July of 2016--before TDS set in with the chattering classes..

    http://www.politico.com/story/.....tin-226153

As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton's behavior towards Putin was remarkably stupid. Obama deserves his share of the blame, too. If Trump's work with Putin since he was elected has made anything clear, it's that working together with Putin to fight ISIS, etc. was not impossible. It's just that Obama and Hillary Clinton cared more about gay marriage in Moscow and being prudish towards Putin than they did about America's security interests. We wouldn't have won World War II or the Cold War the way we did with an incompetent team like Obama and Hillary in charge.

Suffice it to say, the current sad state of affairs with Russia is in no small part a direct consequence of the stupid things Obama and Clinton said and did, and anyone who believes otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about.

  36. Ken Shultz   7 years ago

I find myself wondering if anybody really believes that TDS is winning libertarianism new friends we wouldn't have otherwise.

This site used to be rife with legitimate open borders libertarians. I don't think that's changed because the people have changed so much. Rather, I suspect a lot of that is a reaction to people like Dalmia making the case for open borders so badly, that people who used to be open borders have abandoned the position after reading her terrible defense of open immigration (and her TDS attacks on Trump).

I think it's the same thing with TDS generally. Spewing it doesn't make people want to become more libertarian. It just makes people increasingly disgusted by TDS. Yesterday, I wrote that there's no libertarian substitute for persuasion. Maybe I should have added that there isn't anything persuasive about TDS.

    1. Robert   7 years ago

That's true. TDS deflects att'n from important libertarian criticism of the state of affairs (including complaints about specific Trump policies) onto thinking that if only we would get rid of or neutralize Trump, things would be OK. Trump's an easy target because he's uncouth, but being couth wins you no points.

It's like the complaint I had about Steve Mahlzberg: that he picked soft targets to attack on his talk show. But at least they were somewhat legit. Attacking all things Trump because Trump(!!)...who needs it?
