D.C.'s 'Families Belong Together' March More About Midterms Than Migrants
What was billed as a single-issue protest felt more like a Democratic get-out-the-vote drive.
It was a day of of mixed emotions and mixed messages at D.C.'s Families Belong Together demonstration, one of several hundred rallies held around the country today to protest the Trump administration's practice of separating immigrant families detained at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Thousands of demonstrators poured into Lafayette Park, right outside the White House, to chant, sing, and listen to a slate of speakers organized by a coalition of labor groups, civil liberties organizations, and progressive campaign outfits.
Most were clearly shocked and horrified by the separation of families at the border. For some, the issue had a personal resonance. Dina Potter, for example, tells Reason she immigrated to America with her mother from Guatemala when she was just 12 years old.
"I could easily have been one of the DACA kids," says Potter, who suggests the roots of our current immigration woes can be found in U.S. interventions that have destabilized her home country. "I could easily be one of those folks who just showed up at the border seeking asylum. They come here seeking a safer way of life, and to have their children ripped from their arms is unconscionable."
Most attendees, however, seemed to think the problems they were protesting began and ended with Trump.
"We need to get this administration out. We need to abolish ICE. We need to go back to the immigration policies we had before," said Jane Ellis, a recent immigrant from the U.K. who received her citizenship on June 12.
Alongside the official "Keep Family Together" posters and homemade "Abolish ICE" placards were pride flags, pro-choice signs, and a ton of "Trump = Nazi" posters.
Many demonstrators wore March for Our Lives shirts, Fight for $15 tees, and paraphernalia bearing the slogan "Nasty Woman." Union swag was everywhere, as were Black Lives Matter shirts and signs. Other protestors waved AFL-CIO placards saying "Solidarity Forever!"
A block north of the rally was a man selling political buttons from an "Anti-Trump bandwagon" cart. He said his "Mueller Time" buttons done up in Miller Lite font were selling the best, followed by those bearing a picture of Trump surrounded by bricks with the inscription "Better to Build This Wall."
Elsewhere, demonstrators' attitudes were almost festive.
Scores of college-aged attendees showed up carrying both protest signs and iced coffees, chatting happily and snapping group photos. Hundreds of people took a break from listening to speeches about the specter of white nationalism to dance around a fire truck that was shooting its hoses in the air. Naturally, there was a drum circle.
This mix of rage about family separations, standard progressive rallying cries, and pure entertainment was replicated onstage. One speaker, a child of illegal immigrants, spoke of how her community lived in fear of law enforcement every day. Another speaker condemned Trump for pitting workers against each other as he took away their food stamps and dismantled their health care. One Protestant clergywoman spent several minutes accusing the current Supreme Court of racism. Musical acts performed in between speakers. One man led the audience in singing a lullaby.
Few immigration-policy specifics crept into the pronouncements. That the family separations needed to stop was clear. Everything else was a bit of a blur. Almost without fail, the speakers urged the assembled crowd to show up to the polls in November, with repeated, enthusiastic chants of "vote them out! Vote them out!"
Driving turnout in November was clearly a primary goal of the rally organizers. Their website asks attendees to "RSVP" for the rallies by giving their name, email, and zip code (all useful data points to have with a midterm election on the horizon).
At one point a speaker asked attendees to let Congress know how they feel by texting "families" to a number they flashed up on electronic screens. How this would let Congress know much of anything was beyond me, but it's a great way to harvest phone numbers.
I'm not suggesting the organizers were insincere. Everyone who spoke with Reason expressed a desire for more open, liberal immigration policies. But the consensus seemed that this could be achieved solely by booting Republicans out of office.
There was almost no recognition of the role the Obama administration played in building the border-enforcement apparatus or in deporting record numbers of immigrants, nor any disappointment or irritation for Democrats who failed to prioritize immigration reform when they controlled Congress and the White House.
This inability to hold their own side accountable will no doubt leave many of today's demonstrators disappointed when and if power changes hands again.

I hope there was a medical booth offering treatment for TDS.
I need to market a set of noise-cancelling earmuffs with "TDS Vaccine" on them.
Well, it could have been "her." We would still be reading articles about how the giant circle jerk of how woke we are for now having a madame president and the government would continue to have grown to epic proportions unchecked.
Hell, this midterm I'm sure her daughter would've ran and won for a federal senator position. Loo on the bright side, Trump is very much a point of contention. he's also an asshole. But at least the media is being critical of the government again and the zombie plod to communist oblivion has been slowed down a little.
I do not share your optimism. Numerous polls reveal majorities that support "big government" and "more government". Just not this government.
My best friend's ex-wife makes Bucks75/hr on the laptop. She has been unemployed for eight months but last month her income with big fat bonus was over Bucks9000 just working on the laptop for a few hours. Read more on this site..... http://easyjob.club
Nice try, but the media is not at all critical of the government.
It is solely and exclusively critical of the results of the last free election. The major complaint against Trump (after the fact that he is Trump and not Hillary), is that he is not expanding the government fast enough.

The best I hoped for on 11/17/16 was a SCOTUS appointee better than we'd have gotten from the hag. Well, dog my cats! Gorsuch looks 'way better than that.
And now she *might* have had another opportunity to screw the country for many years; 'it takes a village' and all that bullshit.
Yeah, it looks like Trump can't find his ass with both hands regarding trade, but that's a scant price to pay to avoid the hag's damage.
Then the daily obsessive online commenting around here about "progressives" is PDS.
"Then the daily obsessive online commenting around here about "progressives" is PDS."
Nope.
Trumps biggest crime is beating that hag in November 2016. Proggies really are scumbags who need to get their butts kicked, scumbag.
No, progressivism is just another brand of Marxism. Which is a horrible thing.
"TDS" is a thing because people literally think he is the second coming of Hitler, even though he hasn't DONE anything and, most likely, the country will be no different when he leaves than when he was elected....just like most presidents. Whereas progressives actually do things that make all kinds of people worse off. Their horribleness goes widely unrecognized.
I remember talking to my mom right after Trump got elected and having to reassure her that everything would be OK. "But I'm so scared!" "I promise, there will be very little change to the country after he leaves office. He'll be just like any other president" "*traumatic sigh* I hope you're right..."
It was like having to reassure a small child after they have a scary dream, but she's 30 years older than me. People who should know better have lost their minds.
"People who should know better have lost their minds."
RESIST!
Resist what, exactly?
Uh, something, something, some other thing, and TRUMP!
Yep, shame on him for winning.
"Resist what, exactly?"
Math, to start with. Then everything else just kind of falls into place.

TDS is nothing more than political rhetoric being ratcheted up to the next level.
Started with Bubba. Rs made him out to be evil. Then the Ds bumped it up a notch with W. Another notch with O. And now we've gone to 11 with Trump. I'm sure the next guy/gal (Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho?) will be even worse.
Started waaaaay before Clinton...
So the anti-Goldwater ad with a cute little mushroom cloud wasn't ratcheted up at all?

Why are they ONLY seeking asylum in the us? Venezuela has free everything. Go there.
Shocked, shocked that this is about the midterms.
This inability to hold their own side accountable will no doubt leave many of today's demonstrators disappointed when and if power changes hands again.
Nope.
They'll remember this day but they won't remember the issue. Who cares what the issue is? It's angels versus Nazis and all that matters is that you're on the side of the angels. The Nazis favor tearing babies from their mother's arms and the angels favor tearing babies from their mother's wombs, it should be obvious which is worse.
"This inability to hold their own side accountable will no doubt leave many of today's demonstrators disappointed when and if power changes hands again."
Hmm. I remember frequent anti-war demonstrations by the side of the road until 2008, and then all of a sudden the demonstrators disappeared. Were they disappointed? Don't know, but the demonstrations stopped, even as the war(s) continued.
The left must secretly be Trump lovers as they seem determined to ensure he gets re-elected.
There's ways to have discourse without the shallow exploitation of a current tragic situation on the border. Most Americans can see through the propaganda of the Democrats and left-wing activists.
FASCIST!
RACIST!
NAZI!
Wait, sorry. You were saying?
Sorry, most Americans--at least at critical times--are idiots and cannot see through the average TV or YouTube ad.
I blame the Russians.
The only thing they got right was vote them out.
Vote everyone out, every time.
No more career politicians.
I disagree. Look how fast the Democratic Party changed its official position on marriage equality. In 2008, Obama claimed to hold the bigoted belief that marriage was only between one man and one woman. These days, expressing such nonsense would be career suicide for any Democrat with presidential ambitions.
I predict a similarly rapid shift on immigration. The 2020 Democratic nominee will probably pretend to reject open borders. Within a couple years, he or she or they will "evolve" on the issue, and soon unlimited, unrestricted immigration will be an official plank in the Democrats' platform. This is the outcome libertarians should hope for, and is the main (though of course not the only) reason we should always vote Democrat.
#AbolishICE
#BlueWave
" unlimited, unrestricted immigration "
Are there real, influential people saying this or is it just a strawman? I know Hunter Carlson has been trying to get various immigration advocates to say "how many" but they duck the question. Which group of loons actually thinks America should let in 100 or 200 or however many million refugees who can scrape up plane fare or boats or cars to come here?
Look, clearly the importation of 200 million illiterate peasants would be of massive benefit to the country, and you're a racist if you think otherwise.
That's a number that you pulled straight out of your ass, isn't it? What else is hiding up there?
Why don't you take a look?
Then the left will create a PSA showing a state or states that have the highest inequality without stating the fact that the state or states have the highest amount of immigrants.
Hahaha.
The "loons" who think that are the same people who write for the very website you're on right now. It's the principled libertarian position, after all. Libertarianism is all about minimizing the use of government force whenever possible, so government saying "Sorry, nobody else can cross this arbitrary line" is the antithesis of our philosophy.
Did you go to this march, OBL, and get your Mueller Time buttton?
Indeed, the Libertarian Party's Platform seems welcoming of all non-violent immigrants, (and never mentions things like "they shouldn't be eligible for welfare") so I guess the upside number to immigration is literally the entire population of the planet who isn't here already. The Platform is open to revision at the coming National Convention, so we'll see if sanity prevails.
Except the Asians. Democrats hate Asians.
Japanese Americans fought back in the courts when democrats put them in internment camps.
Their self-reliance, work ethic, and math skills render them "problematic."
A good "ally" knows his place in the hierarchy of victimhood.
OBL, you are such an armchair progressive. You aren't one little bit woke. If you were, you would challenge everyone here to abandon their residence in favor of the immigrant and offer up your own home to as many undocumented guests as possible, going on to live in a tent in your own yard, or the street (like it Matters where a white person lives, right?).
So check your white privilege, and give up everything for undocumented people of color! Anything less, and you're just some racist Drumpf ball licker.
Not hardly. The left needs to "evolve" to rational thought.
There's nothing rational about the "feelz." There's a wall of guns around this country. Sadly, there's also a metric fuckton of people inside those walls who think the rest of the world is like them or wants to be like them.
I was about to write a snarky response, assuming that this must be sarcasm, but then I looked at your name. OBL, you are a constant light in the darkness that is the Reason comments section. Your posts are always well thought out and hit the target dead center. You carry the torch for left-libertarians everywhere, and you are quite possibly the most intelligent commentator on these forums. If more libertarians were willing to follow your lead and carry forth on your well-reasoned arguments, libertarianism might move towards being more than simply a fringe movement.
Would you two get a room? (And of course share it with at least 10 other recent arrivals.)
Can we start with unlimited home construction? I favor increasing the number of visas we offer, but I only have so many hours in the day. Immigrants have many advocates in the USA. The YIMBY crowd is much smaller. Good luck getting the number of visas increased. I'll focus on YIMBY so we won't be a nation filled with homeless immigrants.
Bullshit that "true libertarians" favor an open border. "Suicidal/idiotic libertarians," maybe.
I'd think that free movement of people is the natural end of libertarianism, but morally and practically you can't safely go that way very far until the state's powers must be truncated across the board and the welfare state dismantled. Allowing easy and widespread migration fucks over your own people if you have a welfare state and the demographic shifts are dangerous if the democracy isn't suitably constitutionally constrained (and none are).
If we had limited government, strong and broad individual rights, and no welfare state then there's no reason to oppose to free movement of people. Reason rarely qualifies their support with those observations which seems disingenuous given they will invoke those concerns other where.
The problem for libertarians is the open borders is only prudent and ethical without the welfare state. That the Democrats want both isn't any better than the GOP wanting neither.
My prog roommate went to the march in SF Today, carying ridiculous signs about how he thought Muslims would be interned first BUT HE WAS WRONG.
When I asked why he didn't go to the march in San Jose, he said he didn't like the group and jogged my memory:
Last year they used to have weekly/monthly meetings, etc. And they were trying to entice people to go. They literally thought up trying to give people tickets for every meeting they went to and then they would raffle off prizes (books, etc).
Me: ".... a freakin' raffle??? No wonder you guys lost."
There are two reasons (drink) for this example of doublethink.
1. That's different.
2. History started when Trump was elected.
3. We have no meaningful principles.
4. Obama was a man of conviction and had the right intentions
(seriously, I was grilling a prog friend about how Obama didn't do crap about Guantanamo even though he could have ended it whenever he wanted, and he looked like he was going to cry while saying 'hey, he's TRYING')
5. Did you make him cry?
6. Too painful to watch
7. I am now fully erect.
8. I hope you didn't go to any of the circle-jerk protests today
9. Nein!
Only one reason...
1. TEAM!
Gay rights did not advance until there were enough people who changed their internal thoughts and feelings about gay people in general. Gays went from being sick, mentally ill, disease spreading sinners, the subjects of jokes, to just regular people who happen to be a little different. Not for everyone but enough that politics changed.
Same needs to happen in immigration but will not while we have a populist president saying what he does. When people see immigration and immigrants as a net positive instead of an infestation to be controlled then we will see changes.
When people see immigration and immigrants as a net positive instead of an infestation to be controlled then we will see changes.
The vast majority does see immigrants in a positive light, as their ancestors were similarly immigrants. It's the illegal variety they take issue with, especially when coupled with the welfare state.
Importing low-skilled, marginally educated people from over there to over here has the long-term effect of turning over here into over there.
Were the approved ancestors low skilled and marginally educated? Mine were.
Did they turn over here into over there? Oh for sure they did along with many other over elsewhere people.
I do agree about the welfare state. Milton Friedman explained all of that.
We're all full of immigrants. Try back in 10 years.
Yep, the U.S. doesn't have any space at all. Nosirree. Especially not in Nevada, or Wyoming, or Montana. Nope. No space left for anyone.
Yup montana and wyoming are exactly where illegals are moving too.
*Moving to.
Ever notice how immigrants these days dont homestead their own land or share land with other immigrants? They mainly move to existing large areas of existing farming or mega cities.
Yeah there are tons of jobs available to people in Wyoming or Nevada. Real business and industrial hubs there.
Sure there he swathsfCinatat are empty too. So? Fact is we have no real need for millions of future welfare recipients with minimal job skills who are of little eduction and have ow job skills. Who are also likely to swell the democrats voter rolls..
But hey, let's flip Texas blue for the next fifty years. That big libertarian moment will happen right after.
A country can sustain either a welfare state or open borders.
Pick one.
Earth, Hitler, 1938.
Still shilling for National Socialism.
You mean to say that Trump is Hitler?
Why, bless your heart!
Minus the artistic flair.
Hey Echospinner I have an idea for you, a thought experiment.
WHAT DID AMERICA HAVE LOTS OF 100 YEARS AGO THAT IT DOES NOT HAVE NOW.
I will give you a hint, it rhymes with "loads of low skill factory jobs, a much less efficient farm sector, and free land you can have the title too as long as it is improved upon." Think you can make it all the way to the finish line and guess the answer?
Tell you what: you eliminate the welfare state first, and then come back to talk about immigration.
Agreed.
Do you really think so?
I saw ample anti-capitalist slogans too.
I'm just glad that we finally care so much about children.
All the children?
Can I not like those little bastards next door that scream all the time?
Only if the scream in English.
If they scream in other languages, you cannot hate them.
"This inability to hold their own side accountable will no doubt leave many of today's demonstrators disappointed when and if power changes hands again."
Adorable.
I understand why it's so necessary for refuges to sneak across our southern border. Mexico is like our Syria. Israel's army recently delivered tents and supplies to Syrian refuges on the Syrian side of the border. Why don't we just have the US army core of engineers build a new city on the Mexican side of the border that can house a few million immigrants, since so many libertarians are indifferent to the existence of borders?
There are 1.4 million Syrian refugees in Jordon next door. About 20% in camps. Jordon is saying they just do not have the resources for more.
Israel is in a very precarious and delicate situation which may yet end in war. They have quietly been providing some relief and medical care for those who show up at the border for some time. That is for humanitarian reasons. They must avoid getting sucked up into the war by choosing sides. At the same time they need to keep Iran and Hezbollah from establishing military bases in Southern Syria.
Israel does have an immigration issue more similar, the African migrants who came over through Sinai. Like here it is a big social political deal and the debate is just like ours.
"Israel is in a very precarious and delicate situation which may yet end in war." You left out war again.
Israel is in a very precarious and delicate position because Arab nations in particular, and the world in general refuses to accept the UN resolution that created that nation. And war is a daily part of their lives. They have chosen their side. That side is survival. Never again!
Might want to check your history books again, not the ones printed by the Izzies...
Actually, the Izzies are a large cause for the refugee situation in the ME...
The resolution reads that the Arab states were to absorb any who chose to leave the new nation.
So, by not complying, it is on them.
Just say, "the jooz."
You'll be just as wrong, but at least you'll be more honest.
"Just say, "the jooz."
You'll be just as wrong, but at least you'll be more honest."
Or (s)he could use the USSR code: 'cosmopolitans'.
Same bigotry, different label.
I checked the UN resolution.
This goes up one level - squirrels work on Sunday.
It's tough when hundreds of millions of Muslims favor genocide of your people.
Why do you want to build places for them to live, exactly where they don't want to?
Has there been a march since Trump took office that hasn't been a circle jerk for generic prog butt hurt? Nope. Do these progs ever stop to ask themselves why European countries they seek to emulate with their free health care, college tuition, and paid leave, have long had much more draconian immigration policies than the US?
Big news out of Europe. Something about the EU slowing the hordes of immigrants because USA is successful at doing it.
Reuter eu immigration deal
suggests the roots of our current immigration woes can be found in U.S. interventions that have destabilized [Guatemala]
Obviously the solution is to have the CIA find new homes for the immigrants.
So people are saying, with a straight face, that something America might or might not have caused 64 years ago is still America's fault?
I would then ask, if America is so mean that it causes coups that wreck a society in purpetuity, why would you want to go to that country?
I grew up with the ussr wanitng to nuke me and my fellow americans into the stone age and after 27 years, I still dont want to immigrat to russia.
I would then ask, if America is so mean that it causes coups that wreck a society in purpetuity, why would you want to go to that country?
Revenge? That would certainly explain why immigrant and refugee neighborhoods are so trashy and end up being the target for urban renewal gentrification schemes.
Here is my rejoinder: I don't care. Not my problem.
"Elsewhere, demonstrators' attitudes were almost festive."
Well, of course.
Look, I'm sure there were people there who were totally focused on the immigration issue, but let's face it. An awful lot of the Political Left is composed of 'Hobby Protesters'; people who protest the same way some people go to SF conventions or Civil War Reenactments. It's their hobby. It's what they do for fun.
I like to fuck for fun. I can't imagine being so fucking bored that going to a political rally is something I would seriously entertain.
Het, people WATCH golf. For fun. Seriously. I can understand PLAYING golf, but WATCHING it?
The older I get, the clearer it is to me that a huge number of people do, for fun, things I would pay cash money to avoid doing.
Lots of gullible chicks there.
Not only that, some budding capitalists follow the protest calendar to hawk the T-shirts and other wares that customers want to buy. And I wonder if they report all their income for correct Progressive taxation.
"I realized some time ago that I'm not separate from nature just because I have a primate brain ? an upper brain ? because underneath the primate brain, there's a mammalian brain, and beneath the mammalian brain, there's a reptilian brain; and it's those two lower brains that made the upper brain possible in the first place. Here's the way it works: The primate brain says, "Give peace a chance." The mammalian brain says, "Give peace a chance, but first let's kill this motherfucker." And the reptilian brain says, "Let's just kill the motherfucker, go to the peace rally and get laid."

The anticipation of the apoplexy on the Left in the run-up to Anthony Kennedy's replacement is simply wonderful: the consistent drumbeat by leftists on some other-worldly scheme (and their optimism that it'll work this time) to frustrate the mechanisms they had a hand in putting in place.
It is surprising that they never bother to ask themselves whether their efforts at injecting policy making in the court to make up for losses at the ballot box had a hand in the crushing defeats they are not dealing with.
Critical thinking skills and honest self reflection are in short supply among our leftist brethren. Surprising? Not really.
It isn't just them. When a social movement like Progressivism (or Social Darwinism, or Planter Aristocracy) moves toward the end of its run, things get decidedly odd. From the election of FDR through the early 1960's the Hearst Papers were the outlet for the opinions of a superseded Conservativism, and they got stranger by the month.
And should Libertarianism follow on the heels of Liberal Progressivism, it too will eventually come to the end of its run and resort to conspiracy theories and name-calling.
The LP's rise to 4 million votes graphs out nicely on a logistics replacement "S" curve. Here's a curve fit for recent elections: https://preview.tinyurl.com/ycu6qacj
One or the other of the entrenched looter parties is about to go the way of the Federalists and Whigs.
We need to go back to the immigration policies we had before," said Jane Ellis, a recent immigrant from the U.K. who received her citizenship on June 12.
You mean back to the policies of 1924-1965?
I love this "we" designator from an immigrant whose capital city in her home country is turning into the stabbing center of the world.
We need to go back to the immigration policies we had before
I honestly couldn't tell you when we last had immigration policy that she (or I) would be happy with.
It was a nice summer day in the park.
The young men went because there would be young women there.
The young women went because there would be young men there.
The vendors went because there would be consumers there.
The reporters went because somewhere they could find someone to validate their editorial position.
The common political thread, if there was one, was 'we refuse to accept the results of a free election'.
Well, to quote their hero, Emperor Hussein, "Elections have consequences".
Democrats aren't going to break any laws to protest this shitpile of a presidency and the grotesquely evil policies his party wants to impose on us all, so stop pretending to be shocked by their incivility.
Steve Scalise begs to differ.
I suppose it's okay to politicize gun violence now that we finally have a victim.
What victim do "we" have, paleface?
Rational thought is the victim, and FOX News is the perp.
Jim Acosta Asks When Tony Will Apologize To The Media
It must be very difficult for you Tony. The idea that at least one news network reports things that were not approved by the DNC.
I think it's okay to take every opportunity to remind you that you're a one-dimensional brainless turd.
The Democrats have apparently ALREADY broken laws protesting Trump's Presidency; they may bot be much enforced (and may be Unconstitutional) but most places have laws against turning up at a public event masked, armed, and looking for trouble.
The Antifidiots really should try harder to NOT resemble the National Socialist Sturmabteilung, circa 1930.
Trumps totally like hitler, that's why democrats want complete gun confiscations !!
Nothing says #Resist! like unilateral disarmament.
Lefty logic at its finest.
Readers will observe with some schadenfreude that jingoistic Republican infiltrators--the folks who urge bombing civilians on the other side of the planet--live in pants-dirtying fear that survivors may come hither to retaliate by seeking out the ringleaders.
Do you really believe that terrorists by Islamic fundamentalists is caused by the US? Really?
Which bypassed the simple fact that WERE Trump in any way like that despicable Austrian, the Lefties would be far too scared of him to say so.

"This inability to hold their own side accountable will no doubt leave many of today's demonstrators disappointed when and if power changes hands again."
If it were me, it would also be frustrating that they can't hold the Republicans or Trump responsible for the policy of separating families, too, since . . . you know . . . the policy has already been reversed.
Our world is being assaulted by delusional people, and the media is the source of these delusions.
Protesting a policy that was reversed a long time ago is one example. The "trade war' that hasn't happened yet is another.
Here's a story from today:
"SHANGHAI?China fulfilled a pledge to slash tariffs on imported cars Sunday, but the respite for auto makers who export to China from the U.S. will be brief as Beijing prepares to slap an additional 25% tariff on U.S. auto imports this Friday."
http://www.wsj.com/articles/au.....1530435604
In a concession to Trump's demands, China slashed their tariff on cars imported from the U.S. from 25% to 15%. Yeah, if Xi and Trump don't come to a comprehensive agreement before Friday (July 6), then those tariffs will go up again, even higher.
"Meanwhile, the European Union's initial duties worth $3.2 billion took effect June 22. Most of the duties amount to 25 percent, and include a variety of U.S. products, including motorcycles, boats, whiskey and peanut butter. "
Canada's tit for tat tariffs begin Sunday
I have more faith in China negotiating a reasonable solution than Trudeau. Trudeau's poll numbers were in the shitter before he stupidly shot his mouth off ahead of Trump's summit with North Korea, and now I'm not sure he can back down without looking like Trump's lapdog. Too bad for Canada.
As far as the Europeans go, it's more or less the same thing--with a twist. If the Europeans want to get into a trade war with the U.S., we should reassess our military commitments to their safety. One of the reasons they can afford to bail out Greece, pay for an influx of refugees, and engage in trade wars with the United States is because with a few exceptions (UK, Estonia, Poland), they've been spending less on their NATO commitments than the treaty demands, under the assumption that the U.S. will protect them if and when necessary. Bring a trade war into the discussion, and I can't think of a better reason to pull back on our military commitments to France and Germany, especially.
With regard to China, despite all the billing to the contrary, there is not yet a trade war between China and the United States, and I remain hopeful that one can be averted ahead of Friday, July 6. If the fit hits the shan come July 6, all bets are off, but the closer we get to that date, 1) the more pressure there is for Trump and Xi to negotiate a compromise, and 2) the more concessions we're seeing materialize, with the two I've mentioned above being emblematic of that.
Given this and Trump's . . . um . . . concession not to go after Chinese investments in technology companies late last week, the weather vane seems to suggest that the wind is blowing in the direction of concessions and a negotiated settlement. But you wouldn't know that talking to your average . . . hell, even libertarians around here seem to be confused about the whole thing, thinking that a "trade war" started months ago.
It's like a bunch of Democrats protesting an immigration policy that's already been reversed. The noble lie has never been more relevant. With fact checking now at our finger tips by way of our phones and the digitization of information making lies vulnerable to things like Wikileaks, I thought perhaps the days of the noble like were numbered. It isn't about the control of information. It's about people picking their own lies and believing the ones that reinforce their preexisting biases. Once we get a Democrat in the White House, immigration really won't be an issue for a lot of these people anymore--because the issue isn't really immigration. It's their own preexisting biases, and once there's a Democrat in the White House, those preexisting biases about Republicans will no longer be an issue for them.
Ken, its biases and lies and emotions all the way down...
... thereby demonstrating that legal white European immigrants are often as ignorant, evil, and fascist as those from South America.
I work with a British expat who often extols the superiority of the EU's progressive model of governance, the British NHS, and European style social democracy in general over our vulgarian, heartless republic of unsophisticated rubes.
I can't help but notice that she's been here now for over twenty years.
"Naturally, there was a drum circle"
Wouldn't be a proggie circle jerk without one
Hey, no jerking without written consent! (And no patriarchal sexism, either--you gotta jerk and get jerked by whatever the central jerk committee assigns adjacent to you.)
Morning paper (can no longer link; they have that fade-in, cut-off like WaPo)
1) Willie Brown's column on how, if Trump does X, the Dems might win! Same column, last 20 weeks or so, change X for something else.
2) Doonesbury has Trump as the theme, same as the last 75 weeks, this one claiming new software allows better image changes, meaning that *IF* Trump was in the Russian hotel with the prostitutes and *IF* Putin had vids of that, Trump could claim 'fake news'.
FFS!
Mueller Lite.
Tastes great. Less Filling.
Looks like all the anti war Bush protesters who evaporated when O'Bummer got elected have rained back down to protest immigration policy Trump.
Caring about politics is unseemly. It lacks civility, one might say. Practically divisive.
Total waste of time.
Yet another Useful Idiot Festival.
What fun.
#ResistMath!
I hope everyone was able to get all their facebook/instagram selfies at just the right angle to show how socially woke they are.
As a security officer in a courthouse I frequently took children, even babies, away from mothers who had brought their children along to their court appearances hoping it would soften up the heart of the judge. That never worked.
The defendant would be remanded into custody, I would babysit the child until a CPS team showed up to take them off to foster care.
If "keep families together" were an absolute, we could not have jails or prisons at all, now could we?
I feel bad for the kids, but matters of law shouldn't be decided based on whether a small child with big sad eyes is present. Think about it, should a childless defendant have a harsher sentence because they didn't think to reproduce beforehand?
"We need to get this administration out. We need to abolish ICE. We need to go back to the immigration policies we had before," said Jane Ellis, a recent immigrant from the U.K. who received her citizenship on June 12.
Who let that bitch in? Does she mean Operation Wetback as an example of previous immigration policy?
This is an opportunity. Naturalized immigrants can vote libertarian, and holders of permanent resident visas can donate money to political parties and candidates. I recommend voting for and donating to the LP to all immigrants. I specifically address Brazilians in their own language. Every such vote or donation leverages powerfully to cause the entrenched looter parties to repeal bad laws--or risk losing on account of libertarian spoiler votes.
Unfortunately, a lot of,the, come from socialist dumps and want the bennies. You're kidding yourself if you think any of the, are voting LP.
Wow!
Made the mistake of visiting Reason via Edge rather than Brave. Realized my error.
Much easier to deal with the content without having to deal with Planned Parenthood ads.

"This inability to hold their own side accountable will no doubt leave many of today's demonstrators disappointed when and if power changes hands again."
They won't be disappointed. This is just a game to the protesters who wanted something to do on a hot summer day. Some people go to a baseball game to root for their team and "boo" the bad guys, others go to political protests to root for their team and "boo" the bad guys. They don't actually care about policies.
Perhaps they were properly educated and informed citizens. Perhaps they were part of the liberal-libertarian mainstream.
Perhaps they weren't intolerant, ignorant, authoritarian conservatives.
The march to keep families together is less about anything more than 'We Need To Get Rid Of The Petty Screwup and Dictator Out Of Office' because it's clear the GOP Congress doesn't have the spine or inclination to do so. After a year and half of his terrible policies, why would that surprise anyone?
