Campus Leftists Attack Free Speech
Shut up, they explained.
I'm not surprised that mobs shriek at Trump administration officials in restaurants and that Maxine Waters wants more of that. I've watched this happen at American colleges.
One example:
Heather Mac Donald is a Manhattan Institute scholar who wrote the book The War on Cops. She argues that Americans are less safe today because police, for fear of being called racist, back off. I sometimes disagree with Mac Donald, but she is a thoughtful researcher whose ideas deserve to be heard.
At UCLA, when she was allowed to give her "Blue Lives Matter" speech, many in the audience applauded.
But then "they stormed the stage," she explains in my video interview with her.
The protesters, both white and black, shouting "Black lives—they matter!" drowned out any possible questions.
Watching video of the event, I was surprised to see what looked like a party atmosphere. Protesters smiled as they got out cameras and recorded each other.
"It's almost an expectation that if you're a minority student on campus, you're there to protest," Mac Donald told me.
Eventually, the UCLA protesters took over the stage. No further discussion was possible.
From UCLA, Mac Donald went to Claremont University, where she was met with posters that said her speech should be "shut down" because she is an "anti-black fascist." I asked Mac Donald about that.
"This is preposterous. I have spent enormous amounts of time in high-crime, minority neighborhoods talking to good people there who are desperate for more police, who have a right to expect the same freedom from fear that people in safer neighborhoods take for granted," she replied. "My agenda is to try to give voice to these people. To say that I'm anti-black is ridiculous."
Nevertheless, Claremont activists blocked the entrance to the lecture hall where Mac Donald was scheduled to speak so that no one could enter.
Mac Donald gave her speech to the empty room, and that was recorded for the internet, but no students could ask questions because they couldn't get in.
Even a school newspaper reporter who tried to get opinions from protesters was shouted down.
"I'm with the Claremont Independent, and I'm wondering if you might be willing to tell me anything at all," he pleaded with the mob, but they were more interested in stopping speech than in arguing any points.
"The protestors are the ones engaging in what is clearly historically fascist behavior," said Mac Donald later. "In the case of the Berkeley riots, vandalizing, breaking glass, setting fires, beating people up. But they go under the moniker 'anti-fascist' … They called me a fascist. But I have not tried to silence anybody."
Years ago, California Governor Ronald Reagan called Claremont "a place that fosters discussion and debate … where a student could learn to deal with controversy."
No more, wrote Mac Donald in a City Journal article titled "From Culture to Cupcakes."
"College once promoted an understanding of Western culture," she says. "Today … there is an enormous bureaucratic infrastructure dedicated to teaching students that they're victims."
She calls that the diversity bureaucracy.
"UCLA has a Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (who) makes $445,000 a year. The Berkeley Division of Equity and Diversity Inclusion has a $20 million budget."
She warns, "There's a co-dependency between the exploding diversity bureaucracy and these narcissistic, delusional students who act out little psychodramas of oppression before an appreciative audience of diversity bureaucrats."
Really? I pushed back. "Psychodramas of oppression?"
"Do we believe in objective reality?" she replied. "These students … are among the most privileged human beings in human history. To be at an American college with educational resources available to them that the Renaissance humanists would have killed for. (Yet they) think of themselves as victims. That, to me, is a very sad state of delusion."
These "victims" now feel entitled to censor other people's speech, but differences won't be resolved without debate. Politicians don't help when they encourage their supporters to get rough, as Trump did on the campaign trail and as Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) now has.
At least the college kids may outgrow this behavior. We're stuck with the politicians.

I agree she's an anti-black fascist. But yes, the kids are fascists too. I think this controversy is ginned up by both sides to justify a police state, which they can then fight for control over. We need to resist the urge to give in to this. Because the problem isn't too few police but too many. We need to wind down the war on guns, which is what creates the violence seen in the inner cities. The paradox here is that the older generation of blacks is dependent on the police state, whereas the kids tend to be the victims of it - sacrificed upon its altar. It's quite an epic struggle.
This is a very important point, too rarely made.
Most, arguably all, current public controversies are over who should be in control rather than whether control is necessary or warranted.
I'm making over $7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life. http://easyjob.club
Why do you think she is an anti-black fascist?
Is she shutting down debate?
Is she storming stages preventing others from hearing what speakers are saying?
Is she cheerleading the on-going democrat / progressive war to keep black people dependent on the welfare state?
If you think someone should quit stealing and committing acts of violence and that someone happens to be black, that makes you an "anti-black fascist" according to the anarchists and the leftards.
Remember when that Michael Brown guy in St. Louis blatantly shoplifted those cigars from that store with the clerk right there, and then he attacked the clerk for trying to stop him from stealing, and then he was walking right down the middle of a busy street (probably high as a fucking kite) and thus (not surprisingly) got into a confrontation with law enforcement that became violent?
Brown did nothing wrong and if you think he did you're an "anti-black fascist" according to these shitheads.
""Is she cheerleading the on-going democrat / progressive war to keep black people dependent on the welfare state?""
I think the progressive democrats are looking to make us all dependent on the welfare.
Police are predators, and like all predators the last thing they want is a fair fight. So they pick on those who are least able to defend themselves: The young and the poor.
Of course they are predators. That is why we (I assume I can speak for you on this point) barf whenever we hear some cop or cop apologist say that those who become police officers do so because "they want to help people."
I think some really do want to help people. And they can be helpful on rare occasions. Like one time I was driving with a friend who was new to standard transmission, and he stalled in the middle of the road. A cop came along, pushed us into a parking lot, and drove away. I was shocked that it wasn't used as pretense to run us for warrants and search the car. He wanted to help, and did. Unfortunately cops like him are exceedingly rare.
True. I have a good friend who is now a police officer in Tuscon, AZ, and I hope I never have to read about him on this website.
Cop culture changes people. I would be very cautious about trusting the guy.
There is an 80-20 rule. Just not sure which end are the good ones.
Life experience should teach any rational, sentient being that not all barrels have just one rotten apple. Some types of barrels have a plethora of rotten apples.
TUCSON
To the tune of the old Dr. Pepper jingle:
I'm a fascist
You're a fascist
He's a fascist
She's a fascist
Everybody can be a fascist too
That term is becoming almost as over used as "Nazi" and "racist".
It's kind of a riff on the Iron law of euphemism, also known as the euphemism treadmill: Any word chosen as a euphemism rapidly adopts the same connotations as the original term, (Because euphemisms don't actual change peoples' opinions.) and becomes useless as a euphemism, so one term after another after another gets adopted and thrown away.
In this case, any term used as a dysphemism (The opposite of euphemism.) for some idea that doesn't actually offend people. itself ends up ceasing to be offensive, and must be replaced by another in turn.
Since most of the population aren't offended by conservatism, the natural result of the left calling every conservative a "Nazi" is that "Nazi" loses its sting, instead of conservatives becoming unpopular.
I agree she's an anti-black fascist.
OK, so... opinion is protected speech and all, but... assertion made without evidence.
I don't know anything about this person and whether she's an "anti-black fascist". But what I do know is that this antifa behavior only serves to legitimize the speaker, because next to these college kids she looks like the only sane one in the conversation.
Rather than yelling or screaming someone down, it's much more fruitful to debate and let her try to prove that she's not the monster that they purport her to be. If she's really the racist that they claim she is, it will be apparent.
I would rather that were true. Unfortunately, humans are herd animals with remarkably short memories for facts. It is frequently far more important to be seen as part of the crowd than to do the right thing.
Anecdotally, I am reminded of the Dixie Chicks. At one time, near the top of their game, one of them openly criticized President Bushes war in the Middle East. At that point, much of their audience forsook them. Now, much of their old audience have maintained their position on that matter, and as far as I know, the Dixie Chicks didn't reinvent themselves and become a rock group, but Bushes war has lost much, if not most, of its popularity, and I have yet to hear of a Dixie Chicks comeback tour.
The progressive media complex stopped caring about the Dixie Chicks after giving them their participation trophy Grammys. The Chicks are a country music group, and progressives don't listen, and will never listen, to country music; after the left got their mastubatory "spite Bush" jollies out of them, the Chicks stopped being useful as cat's paws in the culture war.
Ginned up by both sides?
There is Antifa who violently attacks speech they don't like. Like for example a Ben Shapiro speech.
Who is the other side? And what are they ginning up?
"UCLA has a Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (who) makes $445,000 a year. The Berkeley Division of Equity and Diversity Inclusion has a $20 million budget."
Fuck me.
If you make $445,000.00 per annum, let's get busy!
If I made that kinda of money, I could do better then a Reason commentator. I'd tried to land me one of those elites at Salon or Slate. They get invited to the better cocktail parties from what I hear.
If you were a greeter at Walmart, you could do better than a Reason commentator.
If you were a greeter at Walmart you would be contributing more to society than a Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
One of my best buddies who lives in the West Palm area recently nabbed a sales job.
He had been out of work for the past 10 years, and, after blowing through most of his inheritance, he was getting nervous and actually went to Walmart to see about getting a job as a greeter. He was told to complete the job application and he would be contacted for an interview. He was never called.
Recently, he was told by a former Walmart manager that Walmart would never hire someone like him because he was too young and too old and too white and too educated. He's my age, 55, and he is a college grad, though he flunked out of law school.
Most of the WalMart greeters I see these days tend to be middle-aged cat ladies, especially in the poorer parts of town. The days of kindly septuagenarian greeters likely stopped when they started putting WalMarts in the hood on a larger scale.
How are these administrators earning their ridiculous pay if dissenting speech is allowed to be shouted down on their campuses?
These idiots celebrate diversity of everything but thought.
Diversity means celebrating sexual orientation, skin color, place of origin, and things of that nature. Things that are not a choice. Everything else, like thought and choice, must be homogeneous. Diversity of choice and thought can only be explained by hate, so it must not be tolerated.
Diversity means celebrating sexual orientation, skin color, place of origin, and things of that nature.
As long as that sexual orientation isn't straight, skin color isn't white, and place of origin isn't America, because celebrating those things would be racist.
How are these administrators earning their ridiculous pay if dissenting speech is allowed to be shouted down on their campuses?
I'm pretty sure their actual job is to enable the shouting down of dissenting speech by an extremely vocal minority. That's why they get paid so much - they're doing exactly what they're supposed to and very effectively from the sounds of things.
its not dissenting speech anymore its all violent speech and has no right to be heard
that is their tangled interpretations and many are swallowing it.
There is no way in hell that someone who starts getting that salary for such an easy job will ever want to give that up.
"What I learned now was that the LSD retreat and inward plunge can be compared to an essential schizophrenia, and the antinomianism of contemporary youth to a paranoid schizophrenia. The sense of threat from every quarter of what is known as the Establishment -- which is to say, of modern civilization -- is not altogether a put-on or an act for many of these young folk, but an actual condition of the soul. The break-off is real, and what is being bombed and blown up outside are actual symbols of interior fears. moreover, many are unable even to communicate, every thought being so charged for them with feeling that in rational speech there is no name for it. An astonishing number cannot bring forth even a simple declarative sentence, but, interrupting every attempted phrase with the irrelevant syllable "like", they are reduced to mute signs and feeling-loaded silences, pleading for appreciation. One feels, sometimes in dealing with them, that one is indeed in a lunatic asylum without walls. And the indicated cure for the ills that they are shouting about is not sociological at all (as our news media and many of our politicians claim) but psychiatric."
Joseph Campbell, "Schizophrenia -- the Inward Journey" (1970)
As true now as it was then.
In the past they used to grow up and grow out of it. Today the kids are stuck in neutral.
Politicians don't help when they encourage their supporters to get rough, as Trump did on the campaign trail and as Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) now has.
Silly 'stache, it's okay when the right team does it.
Bears poop in the woods, too.
At least the college kids may outgrow this behavior. We're stuck with the politicians.
You're naive John. These kids will go on to be politicians like Maxine Waters.
So, I know it would be "bad", but damn, I have to admit that my schadenfreude engine would love to see some mob that rushes the stage and shuts down a speech, in turn get rushed by the audience and thrown the fuck out of the building. (OK, I actually want to see them all get beaten for being asshats, but just being forcibly ejected would really be sufficient.)
Can we add some lions?
There is a significantly higher than average probability of members of that sort of crowd being 100% grass-fed vegans, so I guess it wouldn't necessarily be cruel to the lions by feeding them unhealthy prey.
I completely disagree with MacDonald defending out-of-control cops, although BLM also has its head up its ass if it thinks the cause is racism and not a public sector union that shields the worst cops from any personal responsibility.
That said, MacDonald makes a great point: a Renaissance scholar would have killed to get within a mile of what these "victim" kids not only take for granted but make it a point to not gain anything from. If your goal is to shout at everyone and act like a fool, you really don't need to take out student loans to do that. They really are irredeemably idiotic.
If your goal is to shout at everyone and act like a fool, you really don't need to take out student loans to do that.
No shit, just go downtown in any major city and watch the homeless people, you'll see plenty of them doing that for free. Of course, if you want to be taken seriously as opposed to ridiculed for the lunatic that you are, college probably is your only recourse.
You are conflating two problems.
The problem in a lot of bad neighborhoods has been that they have been both underpoliced and heavily overpoliced. People get arrested all the time for everything from loitering to drug possession, but near-routine murders go unsolved and even uninvestigated. This fosters an attitude of distrust for the police, which causes people to turn to gangs for protection, and cops don't enter those areas except in force, and the gangs protect and cover for each other's violence, which in turn makes all of the violence worse. It's a vicious cycle.
Police abuse of power and even outright corruption is another significant problem, but it's separate from the problem that MacDonald is trying to discuss.
In defense of the police, investigating a murder requires assistance of the community, which is not always provided. If nobody saw anything, it becomes much more difficult to investigate anything.
The hood makes "snitches get stiches" a community cornerstone and then wonder why the cops don't give a shit when gangbangers kill people in drive-bys.
I'm not gonna hold my breath. These are the future members of the "diversity bureaucracy." They'll be working their way up university administration or corporate HR departments after they graduate with their Victimhood Studies degrees.
Parents may be as much to blame as the students in this. I knew a guy who was a construction contractor that made it big. He sent his son to college (a place he never went) and, being a multi-millionaire, paid for everything. The kid did nothing but party and flunked out his first year.
Instead of bailing the kid out, the dad told him to get a job and pay for any further education himself, but that he was done flushing his own money down the drain.
After a year or so wouldn't you know the kid did a 180, worked a job, and went back to school with a whole new attitude.
More parents need to do that to collegiate fuckups, whether they're reenacting Animal House or PCU.
Maybe we should ask the 9th Circuit to treat Guest Lecturers the same as Abortion Clinics - no Free Speech within 100yds or so. Maybe we could also apply the same standards to Trump Admin Officials and Elected Republicans. Somebody should ask Auntie Maxine about this
Does one suppose that Libertopia will contain more or fewer such disruptions? More freedom is inherently more chaotic. Will Libertopia restrict people's protest rights even more than America does?
"America" isn't rushing the stage and stopping people from speaking - leftist extremists are.
Rightwing extremists are putting children in concentration camps.
You mean the cages in the detention centers that were built in 2014 by Obama that were used to detain illegals until their hearing. Those cages.
Oh, is FOX News still blaming Trump's family separation policy on Obama? Takes a while for bullshit to get out of your system, huh?
Trump's policy recently changed and now does not separate. Were you in a cave the last week?
Who was President in 2014 who built the "inhumane cages" and used them to detain illegals and their kids in 2014?
Quit being such a dumbshit
I was not in favor of Obama's migrant policies either. His actions do not excuse Trump's.
His actions are near identical and you are lying about Trump's enforcement of immigration law that has been around since the 90s. Partisan hack's gotta partisan.
"I was not in favor of Obama's migrant policies either. His actions do not excuse Trump's."
And you never found reason to comment on it. How...
pathetic.
I was not in favor of Obama's migrant policies either.
Funny how you guys didn't foment a national media chimp-out about it until a Republican was in the seat.
Takes a while for you to realize what a fucking idiot you are?
Fuck off, idiot slaver.
You are a pointless, inane, retarded, useless, idiotic twat.
Does everyone suppose that you're a fucking retard? Yes.
Do you ever tire of being a fucking moron?
This is not a "both sides" thing. Antifa and Antifa wannabes violently stop speech they disagree with.
There is no "other side".
where she was met with posters that said her speech should be "shut down" because she is an "anti-black fascist."
The irony is lost on them.
"The protestors are the ones engaging in what is clearly historically fascist behavior," said Mac Donald later. "In the case of the Berkeley riots, vandalizing, breaking glass, setting fires, beating people up. But they go under the moniker 'anti-fascist' ... They called me a fascist. But I have not tried to silence anybody."
Because anyone who disagrees with them on any particular matter, no matter how small, is a "fascist". Leftist continue to destroy the language.
Personally, I want to build the Golgafrincham Ark "B" and put all these leftist pigfuckers on it.
The leftist is pro choice.
They choose what's best for you
and you must comply
or face the wrath
of central committee
"The leftist is pro choice."
I think if Ayn Rand were here, she would reply,
"Define pro-choice."
"Pro choice for whom?"
To go further, consider Ms. Mac Donald's reply to Stossel, "Do we believe in objective reality?"
The notion that such an objective reality could be discerned, and that we would suffer if we ignored it, was central to her thesis. Now, not just the left but much of the Trump cohort would rather live in separate alternate universes than deal with the one that actually exists.
Further clarification: in that last paragraph I was specifically referring to Rand's thesis, not Mac Donald's (although they might overlap). Sorry for any confusion.
Re: "her speech should be "shut down" because she is an "anti-black fascist."
No, she's not. Here are real people with real anti-black practices:
"Why affirmative action failed black families where it matters most" http://malemattersusa.wordpres.....-families/
This is not what you may think it is.
Ouch, particularly painful for me, since I am a happy UCLA alumn. They gave me a great education in mathematics and science, I ignored the occasional protests. No blood for oil. That's from 1990. Lol. I guess that was a while ago. Read a great article the other day that I'd like to share. http://www.latimes.com/opinion.....story.html
Double ouch.
