Trump Pisses off GOP Lawmakers With Petty Mark Sanford Jokes
The incident says a lot of things about the president's character, none of them good.
On Tuesday evening, President Donald Trump held a meeting with GOP congressmen on Capitol Hill where he reportedly made some wisecracks at the expense of outgoing, conservative lawmaker and former South Carolina Gov. Rep. Mark Sanford (R–S.C.).
According to Trump, his jokes brought the House down.
"Had a great meeting with the House GOP last night at the Capitol. They applauded and laughed loudly when I mentioned my experience with Mark Sanford. I have never been a fan of his!" he tweeted Wednesday afternoon.

Trump, you'll recall, helped sink Sanford's reelection chances by endorsing his Republican primary opponent via Twitter on Election Day.
That the president would feel the need to rub salt in the outgoing lawmaker's wounds is petty in of itself. Making it worse are the comments coming from lawmakers who were present for Trump's remarks, and who report a very different reaction to his jokes.
"House Republicans had front row seats to @POTUS's dazzling display of pettiness and insecurity. Nobody applauded or laughed. People were disgusted," tweeted Rep. Justin Amash (R–Mich.).

"Categorically false," said Rep. Ryan Costello (R–Penn.).

Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R–Tenn.) told Politico that only "crickets" were heard following the president's jabs at Sanford.

Trump seems compelled to alienate everyone except his kool-aid drinkers...paving the way for progressive victories and everything that won't make America great. Sad.
I'm just upset that Amash didn't troll the president by Tweeting: "Not Classy. SAD"
So, what did he say?
"Sanford can go back to living in a Junkyard."
"But, not his son. He's been detained at the border"
Someone spends way too much time looking at the MeTV channel.
Better yet, why does anyone care about Mark Sanford, the lying sack of adulterous shit that he is?
Trump ripping on him is pretty ironic though. Dude who fucked a pornstar while his wife is pregnant. Scumbags abound.
RINOs hardest hit!
Well, them and the tortured immigrant children Trump was beating with a rubber tube to separated them from their Familias.
If it wasn't this, they would find some other banal behavior to work themselves into a lather about.
True. There is much to choose from. Not everything can be on the front burner.
I'm not sure why they bother with his actual behavior any longer, the level of outrage hasn't aligned with it for quite some time.
Disagree. The outrage on the behavioral stuff seems to have mellowed as it has been repeatedly been proven impotent. The critics have resorted to merely catalog it now.
Of course you can find the outliers like Fonda and DeNiro, but I see the proles suffering from outrage exhaustion.
Yeah, sorry about your recent coma.
"I'm going to take a dump on this conference table and I want you all to eat it" the president said as he began to lower his pants. Representative Scalise gripped Speaker Ryan's jacked sleeve, "I'm scared, Paul" he said. The president squatted over the conference table and proclaimed "It's coming. And it's so classy." "I'm not eating shit!" Justin Amash exclaimed. "You'll eat it." Trump said with a winced face as he struggled through his dump. "And you'll like it." Speaker Ryan stared off into the distance and dreamed about simpler times when he was throwing grandma off a cliff. Nothing matter to him anymore. He was dead inside and there was nothing anyone could do to change that. "Bon appetite" Trump said as his feces slapped down onto the table.
+1 hot lunch
Sloppy Joe Tuesdays
Your cafeteria sounds awful
I don't work at the White House.
Well done
Well done, with ketchup.
Not Heinz, either. It's that off-brand "fancy catsup" where the vinegar separates out of the tomato paste.
Trump is just a comedian playing to a room that's afraid to laugh.
Yeah, the ancient Romans hated it whenever Caligula decided he wanted to take the stage and do his standup routine instead of sticking to the fiddle.
That was Nero.
Far be it from me to decry new blog content, but this is an odd thing to warrant a post. Both men would seem to be proven liars and philanderers.
Trump is a vulgarian. No surprise there. However, this seems to be pretty weak sauce and the GOP isn't exactly covering itself with glory by overreacting to every slight.
Thinking that Trump's shit is glory, wallowing in it as some type of baptism, are the ones doing a disservice to the GOP. I hope they succeed in the destruction of their party.
Sorry I struck a nerve by talking about you, but I appreciate that you have a group to irrationally hate.
Keep rubbing that shit all over you. It's doing wonders for your complexion.
Oh wow, you're so stupid and deluded that you come after me even though the posts you're replying to contain "Trump is a vulgarian. No surprise there"
That is some top shelf TDS.
Perhaps you're the Aspy type that understands mathematical equations better than the written word. I hope the following makes is easier for you to understand:
"Trump is a vulgarian. No surprise there. I love Trump" = wallowing in Trump's shit.
The fact that you had to lie about what I actually wrote says more than I ever could.
It seems to be easily inferred. Do you deny it? There are a few things with which I can agree with Trump. Is there anything on which you can disagree with Trump? Is there any critique of Trump policy I could make that you would not respond with 'TDS!'
I agree TDS causes thought disorders.
I sure do.
Try not lying about what I wrote.
I agree TDS causes thought disorders.
I sure do.
Try not lying about what I wrote.
It takes a special thinness of skin to consider any and every response an overreaction.
The irony of you posting this cannot be overstated.
Trump is petty, boorish and vindictive.
In other news, dog bites man.
Don't tell Roger that, he'll bark something stupid about being a "Trump-hugger" or something.
I'm pretty comfortable with this remark. But not nearly as comfortable as you are with Trump's petty, boorish and vindictive behavior.
I'm not surprised you are comfortable with it, it's why you're being made fun of for thinking everyone is a "Trump-hugger"
Your such a bully UC. Quit making fun of me!
Stop lying and you might get what you want.
Who gives a shit? Lots of very effective people were not necessarily people you wanted to meet or be friends with. People's characters are complex and varied things. History is filled with rogues and raconteurs who did great service to God and country and wonderful people who did great harm. We seem to have forgotten that fact these days and instead have embraced what amounts to a Marxist view of character that says character can be defined as entirely black or white depending upon whatever single criteria are important to that day's politics.
"Raconteurs"?
In John's mind he was probably thinking of raccoons that run restaurants.
Cutest restaurant ever!
No. I knew exactly what I was saying. It just went over her head.
John's just jealous somebody picked all the corn out of Trump's shit before he got a chance to get some.
I am just jealous that I can't spend my life obsessing over whether people are nice enough to politicians. You called it Jerry. If only I could be like you guys and understand how evil Trump is!! He just has no respect for anything decent.
a person who excels in telling anecdotes
http://www.merriam-webster.com...../raconteur
It is a polite way of saying bullshit artist. The term "rogues and raconteurs is an idiomatic phrase meaning people who skirt the rules of ethics and propriety.
I guess my post went over your head. I hope this helps you understand it better.
I guess the part where nobody laughed at Trump's anecdote went over your head. As well as the part where Trump lied about how much everybody loved his little joke, and the part where even telling the joke shows how petty and insecure Trump is (as if we didn't already know this) and then doubled down on the pettiness and insecurity by braying about what a witty thing he said. It's just sad and pathetic, like making a bad pun and then digging somebody in the ribs and saying, "Get it? I made a joke!" Yeah, they got it, they just didn't think it was funny.
I guess the way I used the term in a sentence went right over your head. I said history is filled with rogues and raconteurs who did great things. The point was not to say anything about Trump in particular. My point was that people with otherwise lousy characters have often done great things. So, the fact that Trump is thin-skinned or not a nice guy is really irrelevant.
I really need to remember just how unsophisticated some of you people are. I don't see how my point wasn't obvious. But I guess it wasn't. I need to remember to use smaller words and avoid using any but the most common references if I want some of you to understand what I am saying.
/shrug
Mark Sanford started it, Trump finished it. I don't pity the guy. Sometimes you get kicked while you're down when you start a fight you can't win.
I realize that he and Amash are good friends, so I'll give him a pass on the outrage.
Trump made some jokes... Sanford abandoned his family and his responsibilities as Governor to chase some foreign tail.
Obviously Trump is the bad guy in this situation.
Didn't Trump get divorced twice, abandoning his family? Didn't he bang a hooker/porn star months after Melania gave birth to his son? Not that either Sanford or Trump's family life has anything to do with anything. Just kinda of hard for Trump to take the family values high ground when he is starting out at the banks of the Dead Sea.
Did he do moral high ground or "dude abandoned his job, lied about it, all to chase unattractive Argentinian pussy"?
He could've mentioned him violating the restraining order Jenny (his wife and the brains of their political outfit) had on him.
"Didn't Trump get divorced twice"
Ya
"abandoning his family? "
Dunno. They aren't hand in hand you know.
Clearly not since they all work for him
Given Trump's predilection for chasing foreign tail while married, you'd think they'd have a lot to talk about.
Trump made some jokes... Sanford abandoned his family and his responsibilities as Governor to chase some foreign tail.
Obviously Trump is the bad guy in this situation.
Two midgets in a pissing contest?
Reason is now all about showing proper respect to politicians. If the reason staff had an ounce of integrity and were actually libertarians, this kind of stuff would be the one thing they liked about Trump. Jesus tap-dancing Christ, I am pretty sure insisting on everyone respect the dignity of office holders like they are some kind of royalty or something is not exactly a good way to ensure liberty. Fuck Stanford. Politics is a dirty business. How about we stop acting like it is some kind of noble profession?
Contrast Trump with Reagan. Lots of libertarians liked some of their policies and hated others. Liberals thought the same too. But Reagan disarmed many of his critics with good humor, charm and self-deprecation. People who hadn't voted for him the first time, supported his re-election. Trump seems to be deliberately alienating everyone who isn't his base. Guess what? The base is too small to decide national elections. The proggie base is also too small to decide national elections. The future of our country is going to be decided by those 20-25% who don't follow the intricacies of political issues like we do, but get a sense of who is a good guy or girl from the media. And who just might believe that their economic well-being was due to Obama's groundwork. And if Trump continues to act like an asshole, or keeps being portrayed as an asshole even when he isn't, then America will be ruled by Democrats for a long time to come.
It is not 1980. Progs can no longer be disarmed by good humor and cheer. People are tired of Washington pushing them around. It is a different world. The last thing that is going to hurt Trump is being mean to someone in Congress.
Agreed; progs can't be. But they are hopeless and can't swing election victories. As I said, it is the 25% who pay little attention who are the ones who swing elections and are susceptible to "good humor and cheer."
Fuck Stanford
I thought it was Fuck Duke?
Yeah, John we get it, Trump is your little Orange Jesus and you'll stand no criticism of Him. Your faux outrage would be a little bit more believable if you didn't so predictably leap to his defense Every. Fucking. Time. while at the same time failing to leap to defend any other politician - like say Sanford when he started talking shit about Trump. What about that, John? Did you applaud Sanford for talking shit about politicians when the politician in question was Trump?
Why do I have to defend Stanford? Yeah, I really don't care what politicians say about each other. You don't seem to understand how this works.
I don't applaud Standford. I don't fucking care, just like I don't care if Trump is mean to him. What about that do you not understand?
Trump rubs it in the faces of those who went against him?
Oh noes!
This doesn't do much for the site's credibility.
Isn't TDS about people (especially journalists) not being able to see the issues clearly because of their personal hatred of Trump?
Now you want to tell us why we shouldn't like Trump--personally? You mean he isn't the kind of guy you'd have over for poker and pizza?
TDS may be worse now than Reagan Derangement Syndrome ever was.
The journalists of today are starting to sound like the hardcore bands of the Reagan era.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYlbWKtoEmg
Why would it harm their credibility to report accurate information?
What are we supposed to do with this information?
You don't like Trump personally. He's an obnoxious jackass.
So what?
Because Trump is a narcissistic asshole, . . .
Go ahead and finish the sentence with anything rational. I dare you.
Because Trump is a narcissistic asshole, I don't like him or the way he acts, would never vote for him, and wish other people wouldn't reward him with praise.
And this requires columns about him being mean to another politician...why?
Poor Mark Sanford needs his feelings protected?
Keep in mind, his wife --- whom he did cheat on --- was the one who got his aides to get his aides to drag him away from the microphone while he was politically committing suicide.
Yes, she called them and told them to get him out of there. AFTER she had already left. He was THAT pathetic in that press conference.
And this requires columns about him being mean to another politician...why?
I thought this was a column about how he's a liar.
Considering your limited vocabulary, can we really trust your understanding of the article?
You think a phrase with fewer than 200 Google results is an "idiom."
Most people are poorly read Cathy. It is not my fault I am not. If you don't like it, get smarter.
Idiom - a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words (e.g., rain cats and dogs, see the light ).
Google results - About 125,000 results (0.36 seconds)
Get your Google machine fixed.
"Rogues and raconteurs"
About 125,000 results (0.36 seconds)
This is where you put your money where your mouth is.
Now try it with quotation marks around the phrase. 154 results.
Ah, so you don't know how to use google, and it's not your fault.
I knew you'd make stupid excuses.
You sound like John defending his "pissed on" post, what the fuck is it with you clowns who can't just admit you were wrong.
How I am I defending my post? I said it. And Obama did piss on the country. I don't really see how that applies here. Not going to a funeral is a bit different than calling some congress creature a poopy head. And Obama was an asshole. Maybe Trump is too. Obama wasn't a bad President because he was an asshole and neither is Trump.
One of us definitely doesn't know how to use Google, but it's not me.
That big stinky link I posted says otherwise, linkless.
So, because you suck at Google, it makes John wrong?
Keep doubling down on it. Please.
Perhaps she needs more monosyllabic words to keep up?
Trump Pisses off GOP Lawmakers With Petty Mark Sanford Jokes
I don't think you did, I think you are covering because you realize it's a silly article.
WHAT?!?
A POLITICIAN TOLD A LIE??!?
GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!!!
I am now cynical about our political establishment.
"Because Trump is a narcissistic asshole, I don't like him or the way he acts, would never vote for him, and wish other people wouldn't reward him with praise."
I don't care whether Tom Brady is a nice guy. I'm not looking for him to be my kid's piano teacher. I want him to be a good quarterback. I want him to make the plays so that our team wins. I want him to make the plays that all the experts on TV say are wrong because they're insufficiently progressive.
You don't pick quarterbacks based on whether they're nice guys. You shouldn't pick a pediatric surgeon based on his bedside manner. Sometimes colonels order their men on the ground to do things that will get some of them killed. Sometimes, the last thing you want in a boot camp sergeant is a nice guy. His job is to turn nice guys into killing machines.
And please consider the other view. Oprah Winfrey is not a nice person. She's a narcissistic terror. All our politicians are narcissists. The ones we think of as nice people have merely fooled us. If a nice guy wants to raise my taxes, does that make him better or worse than a narcissistic asshole who wants to lower my taxes? Whether politicians are nice people is completely beside the point.
I have no faith in a politician's character anyway. That's one of the reasons why I think their power should be severely limited.
What harms their credibility is acting like this kind of thing is important enough to report. The whole thing is just a long virtue signal by the author.
Remember when you said Obama pissed on the american people because he didn't attend Scalia's funeral?
I have no idea how you feel comfortable talking about the lack of credibility of someone else.
Did I ever say that? I don't recall ever saying anything like that. If I did, show me where and I will admit i was wrong. Most of America no doubt didn't give a shit if he did. And I doubt Scalia would have wanted him to anyway.
So, provide a link to my saying that or admit you made it up. I don't remember saying any such thing. So, I think you are just talking out of your ass and can fuck off. Seriously, if you can't make an honest point, don't make one.
That wasn't hard to find AT ALL
http://reason.com/blog/2016/02.....nt_5912258
I don't think Obama did give a shit. Did he piss off the country? No. But he pissed off his enemies, which meant nothing because they were not going to vote for him anyway.
Trump is the same way. It didn't hurt Obama and I doubt it is going to hurt Trump.
Way to admit you were wrong.
It didn't piss off the country. It pissed off his enemies. That part was wrong. The rest is true and just shows how little this matters.
Piss on. You said he was pissing on the country. Exactly like jcw claimed, and you said he was wrong and that you would apologize if he could point to your words. I provided a link. He didn't make it up.
He was pissing on the country. He refused to go to a Supreme Court Justices funeral. I don't see how Trump calling out one Congressman is in any way analogous to that. In that sense, I was more right than I remember. Good catch. I didn't say he was pissing off the country. I said he was pissing on the country, which is exactly what he was doing.
Anytime you want to apologize to jcw is fine by me.
Does that mean you're going to apologize to John?
For knowing how to use Google better than you? No.
You do understand, you didn't actually use it properly? And you're pulling a Buttplug now?
No one is surprised you have no integrity.
Cathy, you don't need to apologize to me. It was my fault for using words and concepts that were unfamiliar to you. I need to use smaller words and speak in terms that you can understand in the future. That isn't your fault.
She isn't going to apologize anyway, she has all the integrity of a Buttplug.
Why do I have to apologize? What I said was not wrong and not analogous to this. I was ready to say he was right. But you made the excellent point that I said he was pissing on the country, not off it. I had long forgotten ever saying that and assumed I was saying pissing off. But you correctly pointed out that I said Obama was pissing on the country, which is completely different.
Thanks a lot. It isn't often that someone scores an own goal on your behalf like this. Don't think I am not grateful.
Why do you have to apologize? Gee, I don't know...
And jcw initially said you said "pissing on." He was right. He didn't make your comment up. But instead of searching for it yourself, you acted like a huge asshole.
I did say it. So what? But it doesn't show what he says it does. You are the one that made that point. And I thanked you for it. What else do you want me to do?
John, she lied, I caught her, and she made excuses. She has no qualms about lying and you should see now that you're wasting your time.
I honestly thought the term "rogues and raconteurs" was something commonly known and that its meaning in this context was obvious. I really don't think it is some obscure phrase. But maybe it is to some people.
It is, she's just an imbecile with no integrity.
Holy fucking shit. A real live cripple fight!
Maybe not live (it looks like It happened hours ago) but the remnants are something to behold.
It's all attacking Trump personally--which is mostly a non-issue and may go in his favor.
Fighter pilots, NFL quarterbacks, heart surgeons, . . .
When I worked in the hospital, there was this surgeon everybody hated. The guy was a narcissistic asshole. He treated everyone around him like shit. Party of my job was to keep him happy--and make him do his paperwork. I could hardly stand being in the same room with the guy he was so obnoxious.
He was a hell of a pediatric surgeon. He'd take children, slice their chests open, break open their rib cages, and cut into their organs. Sometimes, they'd die on the operating table. He couldn't let that bother him for long, though, because there was often another child getting anesthetized in the next OR, waiting for him to break open their rib cages, too. He'd come out of the surgeon's lounge, say the terrible things that needed to be said to the screaming mothers of the child who'd died, scrub up, and get back in surgery.
To do that job well? You may need to be a narcissistic jackhole.
The last thing the next kid on the operating table needed was the kind of guy you'd invite over for poker and pizza.
You know who the real phonies are? The people who act like they care--kiss babies and puppies--and then turn around and treat us to shit like the drug war and ObamaCare. Yeah, Trump is an unrepentant narcissistic asshole.
So what?
Where does he stand on the issues?
Intolerance, ignorance, backwardness, and authoritarianism, mostly.
Oh, he speaks to your heart.
+1
The left can't even understand the question of where he is on the issues.
Those who dislike a libertarian site's content can always head toward Breitbart, FreeRepublic, and Stormfront.
And miss you showing me that yes people with 70 IQs are allowed on the internet? No way.
I'd take Amash's side over Trump
Trump is going to need help from right-wingers in Congress if he is to accomplish any substantial part of Republicans' intolerance-and-ignorance agenda.
He is alienating the people whose help he needs if he is to do anything other than cave and fail, as he did yesterday. Being a great "dealmaker" was his ostensible strength (everyone understood he was not much on reading, insight, or experience). So far, he has been mostly bluster, with few or no "deals" to show for more than one year in office. No wall. No payments from Mexico. The only one locked up so far is his campaign manager. No repeal of Obamacare. No international deal.
I am content. Faux libertarians, bigots, and other right-wingers probably should not be.
Do tell us about the Republican agenda to cut the federal govt, we could all use a good laugh.
Yes, the Republicans refused to cut a fraction of 1% of their recent budget.
The loss of their support for budgetary concerns has to be crushing.
Anyone who reads your posts can see that this isn't true. You have this weird, pathologcial need to drag people down as a way to elevate yourself.
Why do writers so often quote a tweet in "" and then immediately follow it with the tweet itself? It ain't just here, it's everywhere. WTF is wrong with these people?
WTF is wrong with these people?
The most 2018est statement ever made.
Yes, the tweet shortly before the polls closed was the deciding factor. Sure.
Hey Russian social media campaigning out Trump over the hump. /derpaliciousness
I am touched, though, to see Reason come to the defense of the feelings of Republicans. It is always needed.
MAGA
Lol. Mark Sanford is "libertarian" now. Other than having a taste for brown pussy what else is required? Do you just have to be a disgraced Republican party washout like Gary Johnson and Bill Weld?
Mark Sanford was/is a conservative who at least appears to have become more libertarian over time, if his votes against NSA spying are to be believed to have originated from libertarian principles. Like Jeff Flake in Arizona, he was a less than "perfect" advocate for our ideals. If he is missed it will only be because his successor ends up being worse.
In any case Justin Amash and other libertarian leaning congressmen should focus more on how to be effective legislators for liberty in the Trump era, and help elect more liberty advocates, leave the pissing matches with Trump to the NeverTrumpers.
"Trump lies, aggrandizes self."
Can't we just record that and let it be the lead story every day? Then move on to new news in minute 2.
