Mark Sanford Loses Primary, the Nightmares Continue for Trump's Republican Skeptics: Reason Roundup
Plus: a new survey of students' opinions on due process rights, and why it's wrong to reflexively hate all men

Tuesday's primary results were bad for Republicans in general, but even worse for those on the right who dare to criticize President Donald Trump. Rep. Mark Sanford (R–S.C.), a fiscal conservative whose libertarian leanings made him skeptical of Trump, lost his re-election bid to state Rep. Katie Arrington. (Arrington will face Democrat Joe Cunningham in November.) Sanford conceded late Tuesday night, admitting that "the numbers indicate I am not going to win this race."
The fact that Trump issued a tweet Tuesday afternoon imploring primary voters to pick Arrington over the "very unhelpful" Sanford probably didn't help his chances.
Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA. He is MIA and nothing but trouble. He is better off in Argentina. I fully endorse Katie Arrington for Congress in SC, a state I love. She is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes. VOTE Katie!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 12, 2018
The former governor is best known for disappearing for several days in 2009. It turned out he had flown to Argentina to spend time with his girlfriend, with whom he was having an extramarital affair. Trump's tweet is a reference to the infamous episode, though the president is certainly in no position to criticize other married men for such mistakes.
Aside from the visit to Argentina, Sanford is remembered for vetoing pork-barrel spending and rejecting stimulus funds with the zeal of a Ron Paul groupee. And he's been increasingly at odds with Trump as of late, frequently voting against the president.
Also in Virginia, Republican voters chose Corey Stewart to challenge Sen. Tim Kaine in November. You may or may not be surprised to learn that Kaine was Hillary Clinton's vice presidential pick in the 2016 election. (Seriously, he's quite forgettable.) You also may or may not be surprised to learn that the challenger, Stewart, was previously pals with some white nationalists and is a big defender of Confederate monuments.
Elsewhere, Democrats picked up a Wisconsin state senate seat in a district that Trump won by 16 points in 2016. All in all, it was a pretty good night for the Democrats, except in South Carolina's 5th Congressional District, where admitted wife-beater Archie Parnell routed his primary opponents to clinch the Democratic nomination. He recently lost all support from the party, and his campaign staff, who resigned en masse.

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) finds that a majority of students support due process protections for those accused of underrage drinking, sexual misconduct, or otherwise breaking rules on campus. The poll, which was released this morning, was conducted by YouGov:
The survey reveals that many college and university policies do not reflect student attitudes toward due process on campus. American students think their classmates deserve many of the procedural protections outlined by FIRE in the 2017 Report. In fact, in all but one situation described in the survey, a majority of student respondents supported the ten fundamental elements of due process highlighted in the 2017 Report….Not only do the vast majority of students think their classmates should have due process rights, but they also feel that these rights are important: 98 percent of students think that it is very important or important that students have due process protections in college.
The key finding: "A majority of student respondents support nine of the ten fundamental elements of due process." Respondents were less supportive of due process when it came to sexual misconduct cases, but solid majorities still backed fundamental fairness.

The AT&T merger with Time Warner is happening—the Department of Justice lost its bid to block the sale on Tuesday. Reason's Scott Shackford describes the federal government's attempt to stop the merger as "ill-advised" and notes that the outcome is undoubtedly good news:
AT&T is a service provider buying up a content producer, making a single, stronger company that's better able to compete. This doesn't produce less competition in the marketplace.
The decision is also a blow to Trump, Berin Szoka tells Politico:
"Trump's meddling in law enforcement actions, his attacks upon particular companies, and his utter unpredictability have created the kind of legal uncertainty common in 'banana republics,'" said Berin Szóka, president the libertarian group TechFreedom. "At least in antitrust law, the courts, not Trump officials, will have the final say on what the law really is."

We can all hate Bill Clinton, though.
Am I going to have to start to sympathize with him now?
Only cucks hate Bill Clinton or something
People really care about a raccoon stuck to the side of an office building in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Raccoons try to get my hens on a nightly basis. Let it drop.
These euphemisms!
For god sakes, someone help the raccoon!
Everyone knows that animals crave gestures of love and concern from people, as well as assistance in the tasks of their lives. Animals die left and right in the wild, and isn't it the least a fully-featured homo sapien can do, to see where they can help, and to intervene?
That's compassion, people: getting involved with helping others, even animals. Because we understand.
"When raccoons try to get on our back porch, mama just chases them off with a broom."
9.8 meters per second squared should take care of that.
I don't know. That's a lot of fur, and a lot of drag. Plus those suckers are tough.
One night back in the 80's one walked out in front of my car from behind a shrub. Was doing around 35 mph and didn't even have time to touch the brakes. Nailed it front and center, heard it thump thump tumbling beneath the car. I stop, get out and look back to see it lying in the road, then walk around to check out the damage. While I'm looking at my front bumper the damn thing walks by, right down the other side of the road, like nothing was wrong. I looked back to where it was previously lying to make sure it was the same one, and it was. No limp, no hunch, nothing to indicate it was significantly injured. I wanted to shoot the SOB, because my car clearly got the worse of it., but it was a residential area.

EXCLUSIVE: NEW USCIS OFFICE INVESTIGATING THOUSANDS WHO GOT US CITIZENSHIP THROUGH IDENTITY FRAUD
That story reminds me of my friend from high school who had a habit of slipping drugs into people's food. Last I heard, he was still living in Boston. Come to think of it, many of the recovering junkies at the rehab centers near me feel no guilt about slipping something into a person's food. It's like spiking the punch to them. Oh, and don't get me started on the nurses who see involuntary drugging is part of their job description.
Exponential cultural enrichment!
The statistics are not with you, Longtorso.
The government is also forcing them to discuss the issue on an upcoming episode.
This is the EPA under Trump. Reality TV Ratings Uber Alles.
They should probably force them to decorate a cake dedicated to lead paint awareness.
I didn't see a date in the article but i have already seen the episode where they make a big deal out of lead cleanup and considering they quite the show last year the episode may have occurred some time ago possible before Trump took office. Maybe someone can clarify dates
Californians May Have to Choose Between Showers and Laundry with New 55-Gallon Water Limit
...Wealthy California residents, however, got a special dispensation from the legislature. There are to be special provisions for swimming pools, spas, "and other water features" that use a lot of water....
Not to worry. Those enviro-conscious Californians are already showering with their clothes on, aren't they?
Those enviro-conscious Californians shower?
Good catch. It's not called "sunbathing" for nothing.
Baby wipes, brah.
Dude wipes, brah.
Never nudes are good for the environment.
There should be a special dispensation for anyone who didn't vote for that idiot Brown.

My favorite Rage song
He barely beat Colbert's sister in 2013.
Barely won in 2015.
In a RELIABLY Republican district, he seldom hit much above 50% of the vote.
Yeah, it was Trump that caused him to lose, not that a lot of voters don't forgive him for his meltdown that killed his governorship. A lot of voters here do not forgive him, just that he was better than the alternative. Trump endorsed his opponent YESTERDAY. It didn't swing the election, FFS.
I agree. Sanford's biggest problem is that he is an asshole.
We can all hate Bill Clinton, though.
He really does NOT want Hillary to get the nomination in 2020, does he.
What DOES Bill want these days? You think his junk still works? Cause without that, what could possibly motivate him?
I'm sure that his Chinese sailing vessel is in fine working order, why?
Wonder pills work wonders.

What EXACTLY was wrong with what she wrote?
#MeToo is the belief that women are too stupid to assume men might want something when they invite you, alone, to their hotel room. It was also, largely, women fucking men for jobs and being dissatisfied with their choices later in life.
Yeah, her comment seems pretty reasonable. There is no contradiction in saying that people like Harvey Weinstein did terrible things and that women need to stand up for themselves and say something when people do stuff like that.
Weinstein's antics were excused and deliberately ignored for decades by the entire entertainment industry. The last people we should be looking to for moral direction is the mass media complex.
Yeah, that's a think no one wants to say. Any of the women who Weinstein pressured into degrading themselves for jobs could have said something and stopped it. It's not as if no one was concerned about that sort of thing 10 or 20 years ago.
And their careers would have been destroyed like Brendan Frasier's.
Any of the women who Weinstein pressured into degrading themselves for jobs could have said something and stopped it
I'm not going as far to blame the women he went after; the real enablers are the people who knew he was like this and not only let it go, but continued to star in, fund, and distribute his company's movies. They sold out for money, prestige, and awards. It's not like Weinstein is some special unicorn that's unique in his predatory behavior, this shit has been going on for decades. Quite frankly, the entire movie industry is culpable.
And anyone who says they "didn't know" is lying their fucking ass off to protect themselves.
I know people have a hard time resisting the urge to jump straight to freakout mode regarding the Readon writers, but try reading what you quoted again.
What EXACTLY was wrong with what she wrote?
Nothing is wrong with what she wrote. That doesn't mean she didn't call the #MeToo people weak and stupid. Calling people weak and stupid is maligning them.

Why do you think Robby wrote this? He was quoting Ben Shapiro yesterday with his whole "facts don't care about your feelings". Shapiro isn't a big fan of Owens or Turning Points. Robby's going after her to please his god emperor, like a good Jewish Nazi or something.
The former governor is best known for disappearing for several days in 2009.
Exactly. Not sure it was a Trump tweet that did him in.
Oh, don't let that get in the way of the narrative.
It had to be Trump. Nothing Sanford did....mind you, before 2009, I thought he'd be a fine President. Hell, he made our state DMV quick and efficient. Trips taking more than 10 minutes are the exception now.
Except, known Trumpalo Corey Stewart also won against a fiscal conservative in Virginia, so there are multiple data point for the continuing Trumpalization of the GOP.
GOP primary voters never made questionable choices before the Trump?
Akin, was apparently pro-Trump after the fact.
Perhaps the GOP should figure out why their base hates them.
Hint:the discharge petition thing. That is one reason.
Can the GOP Establishment Stop Being Idiots Just Once?
...We get why the Chamber of Commerce types want amnesty. They love the idea of a serf class whom they can pay pennies and then let us make up the difference through the social spending we have to shell out because these robber barons won't pay their coolies' full freight. Five years ago, illegals cost us taxpayers over $134 billion with a "B," all so the Paul Ryan Party can please its corporate masters, and so Chuck Schumer's crew can get some more votes and its elite members can get some cheap housekeepers. Basically, Republicans want you to dish out more dough in taxes so check-writing fatcats can get docile laborers and so a liberal couple in Santa Monica can pay meager wages to that nice Guatemalan lady who is raising Kaden and have their lifestyle subsidized by you.
How do you say "hard pass" in Spanish?
Let's not even mention the crimes the Normals endure and the elite avoid living behind the guardhouses of their gated communities, from fender benders by uninsured illegals to MS-13 mass murders. At the end of the day, the people pushing illegal immigration cash in on votes or, well, cash, and we get handed the check....
You sound disaffected and committed to law and order, Johnny, so here is the good news: Soon enough, most immigration will be legal!
Most immigration into the US is already legal, you ignorant bigot.
It's just that there are hurdles and bureaucracy, perhaps too much, but not unlike almost every other aspect and responsibility of being a citizen of the US.
Unfortunately, too many non-citizens feel that they can ignore these hurdles and bureaucracy and bypass the laws of the land.
We call these people 'illegal' immigrants, because they have broken the law and fail to comply with what is asked of them to remain in the country.
If you wish to change the laws, you can vote. So can I and our neighbors. If you don't like the outcome, too bad.
You are talking out your ass as usual, MikeP2. How many "illegals" do you personally know?
How many "illegals" do you personally know?
Relevance?
So you have nothing specific to argue or add? What part of my comment do you disagree with...because largely it is just a statement of current reality.
Or is all you have the general childish negativity?
Most immigration into the US is already legal, you ignorant bigot.
You believe America has open borders, you half-educated yahoo?
Did you pull that from a discount homeschooling outline your substandard mother used?
Open borders is not equivalent to legal immigration. Let me explain it to you with a simple analogy.
Driving on public roads...
Public roads are not open to everyone. But there are legal avenues to drive on public roads. You need to work through the bureaucracy and comply with the laws of the land. You need paperwork and routinely need to update this paperwork. It can be annoying and wasteful, but most people choose to comply. However, if you choose to not follow the laws and bureaucracy of the land, you are forbidden from driving on public roads. You are considered a "illegal" driver and if caught will be cited and/or arrested.
People can argue about what level of bureaucracy and laws are necessary for society to control public roads. Perhaps it is too much. But most people do not believe roads should be open to anyone free of oversight.
Since there are only estimates of illegal immigration whereas there are concrete numbers for legal immigration, it would seem your viewpoint is unverifiable.
Arthur L. Hicklib once again demonstrates his lack of reading comprehension skills.
Re: JL,
--- We get why the Chamber of Commerce types want amnesty. They love the idea of a serf class[sic] ---
Now that we're on the subject of Trumpista detachment from basic semantics (serfs aren't paid employees, no matter how much Trumpistas want to spin it) it's interesting how Trumpistas conflate 'fender benders' with MS-13. If Trumpistas were really serious about the bullshit they peddle, then they have to argue that the woman who hit my wife's car from behind had to be a member of the Bloods and not the wife of a veteran.
Trumpista imbecility. It's as awful and grating to intellect as Marxian imbecility. Making America Grating Again, one genetic fallacy at a time!
There is the fact that a legal immigrant would be deported for some of the same crimes that illegal immigrants are protected from being deported on due to sanctuary cities and the whole fact that the government doesn't know where illegal immigrants reside, which is not true for legal immigrants.
So, I wish people would just acknowledge that their position is to protect illegal immigrants at the detriment of legal immigrants. At least be honest about it
"Rep. Mark Sanford (R?S.C.), a fiscal conservative whose libertarian leanings made him skeptical of Trump, lost his re-election bid"

Shame on them for succeeding!
I read the most adorable article in the Washington Post about this. The writer was complaining that the administration was not defending Obamacare in court and how this was dangerous and unprecedented. Then near the end of the article the writer admitted that the action is not unprecedented as president Obama began the practice of not defending laws that he didn't like in court, but, according to the writer, that was different for reasons.
I shit you not, a supposed adult acknowledged at the end of his article that his entire premise was untrue, but that we should avoid that just because. That was a grown-up. It wasn't some high school freshman who wrote that. That was an adult. Think about that
That's some sharp legal insight. Is that a Regent law degree talking, or just something you remember from an off-brand homeschooling outline?
(For anyone interested in additional legal analysis, the Volokh Conspiracy has an item or two addressing the severability issue. As always with the Conspiracy, checking Balkinization or another non-movement-conservative website for additional perspective would be worthwhile.)
Hell yes, it's Reverend Retard!
"That's some sharp legal insight."
What legal insight was offered? I just noted that a writer at the Washington Post wrote a hypocritical article where he noted that what the administration is doing has precedent, but he liked when the last guy did it so that's different. It's fun to watch people who applauded an expansion of executive authority now taste the fruits of their folly.
"That's some sharp legal insight."
That's some real ignorant comment; to be expected.

Putin hacked the election to install Drumpf, and he's getting the most of his investment. How much longer can the US continue with a foreign intelligence asset in the White House?
#Impeach

Can we blame the Republican's bad results yesterday on the Russians or is that different for reasons?
Bad results = Trump's fault
Good results = Russian meddling
Have you not been paying attention?
I suck at understand things and stuff. I blame the Russians
You fail again. Your lack of understanding is clearly a bad result, so... Trump's fault.
Same difference as Trump is Putin's agent and only a prostitute imprisoned in Thailand knows the truth or something totally not insane, but clearly insane. Gotcha!
special provisions for swimming pools, spas, "and other water features"
like immaculately groomed lawns?
Hmm. Wouldn't golf courses that are never watered be more challenging?
in Virginia, Republican voters chose Corey Stewart to challenge Sen. Tim Kaine in November
It did NOT help that for some of the NoVa counties and cities such as Alexandria where I live, the dem primary was also essentially the election for city/county council. It could have helped Nick Freitas win if more moderate repubs had the opportunity to vote in the GOP primary (he only lost by about 5000 votes the last time I checked). He would still lose to Kaine in November, but with the turd Stewart on the ballot now, it will be all out carnage.
On the other hand, this could be good for the LP senate candidate Matt Waters
"On the other hand, this could be good for the LP senate candidate Matt Waters"
5% here we come!
Hey, don't knock it. Five percent is distinctly spoiler territory, and the only way the GOP neutralizes that is by becoming more libertarian.
If they are going to spoil Stewart from becoming a Senator that's probably a good thing. Libertarian moment?
Or by worse legal bias against third party candidates, of course.
I keep getting robocalls from Matt Waters where he just rambles on and on. I'm probably gonna vote for you already, dude, i don't need to hear about your fifteen kids and how you're from Virginia.
There's an interview with a Richmond TV station on his website. He seems somewhat intelligent and articulate, which is a big deal for an LP candidate, but they've run better in Virginia (Sarvis and Hyra). The fact that he is socially conservative isn't going to help attract many crossover voters.
15 kids? I thought you would not vote for anyone that has more kids than you have cats.
Considering his opponents are Tim Kaine and Corey Stewart, i might have to bend my principles a bit.
Or get some more cats.
Freitas was a good candidate. The Pauls have no clout in Virginia. Every time they back a candidate in that state he loses
Moronic TDS again evident here, blaming outcomes on Trump that he had little to no impact on. Correlation, not causation.
A significant majority of the center-to-right is deeply frustrated with DC and business as usual. This is not new and electoral impacts date back to before the Tea Party.
Trump is a symptom of this, not the cause.
Sanford is a tool, and has been a tool for a long long time. His ouster is a symptom of this same frustration.
The Atlantic article wasn't "eloquent", it was the usual male apologist, I can't find my testicles (check the little votive box with the pink ribbon in your desk drawer?) failure to call radical feminism what it is, a hate movement. It's sexist and racist, first blaming "men" and "toxic masculinity", then excusing "men of color" to blame the worlds "problems" on white men. The irony is that these "oppressed" white women in America have the highest standard of living and longest life expectancy of any class of people throughout history as they go about being oppressed and looking for a more autocratic and intrusive government to "fix" the problems these 'independent women" seem unable to overcome themselves. The standard of living women enjoy is provided by men, at the expense of men's health and well being.
I'd like to know how you don't get fired from your teaching position after publicly declaring hatred for half of the population.
Looks to me like what she teaches is equivalent to what she put in her article. Not sure why she'd be fired for it at this point.
Yeah, my comment was one of those feigned ignorance things.
What perk does Longtorso get from using the 'Recruit a Friend' feature?
He gets a coupon for a half-price fedora, with the purchase of another fedora of equal or greater value.
*goes looking for a friend*
Sanford is just the sort of Republican Reason,/i> otherwise seems to hate for talking like "a fiscal conservative" with "libertarian leanings" while voting with the DC crowd for ever more government.
--- Virginia, Republican voters chose Corey Stewart to challenge Sen. Tim Kaine in November. [Stewart] was previously pals with some white nationalists and is a big defender of Confederate monuments. ---
Yes but those were the decent white supremacists president Trump alluded to like a year ago. You have to give Stewart that!
What an embarrassment when they could have chosen Freitas. I don't think Stewart defending Confederate monuments isn't all that bad, though. I think the abusing women and being buddies with Nehlan are what makes him bad. Also, he's probably really dumb
Also, he's probably really dumb
Well, the folks in PWC seem to like him enough to keep re-electing him over the past decade, which helps prove your point. Whenever something fucked-up happens in NoVa, its usually in PWC-its like a mini Florida.
Meh I don't think either have a chance in hell of beating Kaine. Stewart is such a unapologetic rube he cracks me up. He's the caricature of a republican straight out of a Grand Theft Auto radio spot.
Corey Stewart is what you get if you draw a really hateful cartoon of Donald Trump in an Indian graveyard at midnight.
Wait, is the cartoon of Trump in the graveyard at midnight, or is the cartoon of Trump drawn in the graveyard at midnight. I don't want to risk raising evil spirits.
In case it's not clear, that first sentence really ought to have a ? at the end.
The act of drawing takes place in the graveyard at midnight. If you do it the other way, all you get is published in the Washington Post.
The rubes don't like to be called rubes.
It's very likely Democrats crossed party lines to vote for weakest candidate, as they did with Trump in open primary states.
Chances are Freitas would not have beaten Kaine either, but whacknut Stewart seals the deal.
Bigots never do.
Wow, so 'bigot' can be someone who's family fought and died in one of the bloodiest wars in American history?
That sounds about your speed.
There are bigots in every group, but some people think the Confederacy wasn't such a bad idea minus the slavery issue. I wouldn't say that was necessary true at the time, but views change and it seems to me that stronger states rights isn't a bad thing compared to overreaching federalism.
I had family who fought on both sides. I don't know if that noble part of my past cancels out the bigoted part or vice versa?
"Last week, Suzanna Danuta Walters, a professor of sociology and director of the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at Northeastern University, posed the question, "Why can't we hate men?""
(she says)
"If you really are #WithUs and would like us to not hate you for all the millennia of woe you have produced and benefited from, start with this: Lean out so we can actually just stand up without being beaten down.
"Pledge to vote for feminist women only. Don't run for office. Don't be in charge of anything. Step away from the power. We got this. And please know that your crocodile tears won't be wiped away by us anymore. We have every right to hate you. You have done us wrong. #BecausePatriarchy. It is long past time to play hard for Team Feminism. And win."
Yup, this is how you got Trump.
Remember when some horrible people suggested that feminists were man-haters? And this was rejected as a false, misogynist myth?
Al Bundy was right all along?
Yeah, but even then that excuse didn't hold much water.
First wave feminism had it's bad spots, but overall made sense. Whatever wave we're on now has clearly lost it's fucking mind and has become exactly the thing they claimed to be against in the first place.
"feminist women"
Again, feminism is the most discredited ideology in our modern times. If they hadn't been so apt to defend Bill Clinton and smear his accusers or if they hadn't so brutally attacked every female candidate that was not extreme on abortion maybe people wouldn't roll their eyes every time they speak.
When someone says "I'm a feminist" now all they really mean is that they take an extremist view on abortion and that's about it.
There's a tremendous amount of obnoxious feminist philosophy riding on the coattails of a very good ideal.
I think most people are willing, and in fact want, women to be treated as equals in the eyes of the state. Seems like much this other crazy shit is just hanging on to this underlying beautiful principle.
all the millennia of woe you have produced and benefited from
That's another common theme that needs to be pushed back. The vast majority of humanity was living in abject poverty for most all of those millennia. Men were just as suffering and oppressed as women. Specialized gender roles were necessary for survival. Women have babies. That's really important and a big burden. And you can't equally share parenting duties when men need to hunt or perform back-breaking labor to keep their families alive.
And even if they weren't, it is turpitude to suggest that people in Group A are justified in oppressing people in Group B because of something that happened long before either was born.
This too. The whole group identity thing breaks people's minds, it seems. They are talking about it as if the historical experiences of women are the experiences of women living today. And as if things like the average pay women get has anything to do with the particular compensation any individual woman receives.
They don't want to look at individual incomes because that explodes their narrative, nor do they want to acknowledge that the individual choices of actual women are the primary reason for any 'disparity' that exists.
if women as a group wanted to close that gap, they would take jobs with a higher chance to die on the job as one simple example. Or go into extremely difficult and competitive fields like mechanical engineering.
Unfortunately for feminism, women tend to choose employment that does not pay as much combined with other lifestyle choices that simply lead to less average pay. However, that average isn't a useful metric in the slightest which is why they push that number. It's the only one that reflects what they want it to, no matter how useless it actually is.
One unintentional outcome of that is that it feeds the narrative that women are shitty at math somehow, since this reflects a grave misunderstanding of how data works or is a straight up purposeful lie. Needless to say, I don't blame 'women' for that at all. I do, however, blame the idiot feminist leaders for their patent bullshit.
The screed was written by a bitter lesbian who knows the only legacy she'll ever leave is the hundred wine bottles they'll find throughout her cat-shit infested apartment after she hangs herself in a depression-induced fit.
Nice to see I have something in common with someone.
It's the little things that make life what it is.
The vast majority of humanity was living in abject poverty for most all of those millennia. Men were just as suffering and oppressed as women.
Not to mention; fuck Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, Queen Elizabeth, Catherine the Great, Marie Curie, Amelia Earhart, Grace Hopper... etc., etc. Also, doubly fuck the generals, commanders, soldiers, miners, glaziers, mechanics, etc. who, possibly despite personal objections, either supported them directly or knowingly supported them indirectly, in many cases to the death. Those shitstains should be honored to be collectively wiped from history.
Meh. Trump had the same kind of grievances, except directed at the powerless.
Remember, in the warped minds of progressives coal miners and unemployed factory workers are "powerful", whereas wealthy urbanites are "powerless" because of the color of their skin.
These people are not smart
Yeah, he didn't base his campaign on scapegoating wealthy urban people of color. You know who he picked on. I was there, were you?
"Rep. Mark Sanford (R?S.C.), a fiscal conservative whose libertarian leanings made him skeptical of Trump, lost his re-election bid to state Rep. Katie Arrington."
I admit to not knowing the guy; what qualifies him a 'a fiscal conservative' and libertarian leaning'?
He took a cheap flight to Argentina?
Libertarian leaning is code for doggie style.
I'm serious here in that Trump has actually, you know, DONE things which libertarians ought to like, while the 'libertarian leaning' guys taking it in the shorts seem to be 'libertarian leaning' since they said some magic words with they 'sat down' with Welsh.
Has this guy done anything? Or did he just say he'd like a smaller government?
It's amazing to me that we eat our own for not being 100% pure on whatever issue (wedding cakes for Gary Johnson, for instance) but then we claim that because Trump has done a handful of things to advance liberty we should ignore all the things that we don't agree with.
That being said, Sanford is much more of a centrist than a libertarian. His libertarian bona fides are based mostly on being a deficit hawk when he was governor and being for free trade.
FWIW, I will take what I can get.
When it comes to the accepted political wisdom of today you say what will get you by to get into office.
Being a deficit hawk and being for free trade is a whole hell of a lot more than you'll get from damn near anyone else these days.
So, will we hear media obsession over the abuse issue of Archie Parnell, the SC Dem candidate? Sure, the party disowned him...but the GOP disowned Akin and it did not matter.
But that I had to look up his name explains that.
Yeah, Welch is working on a breathless article about how unsavory Parnell is and there will be wall to wall media demanding that Democrats denounce him.
You already know the answer to this. Stop being cheeky
"Trump's meddling in law enforcement actions, his attacks upon particular companies, and his utter unpredictability have created the kind of legal uncertainty common in 'banana republics,'" said Berin Sz?ka, president the libertarian group TechFreedom. "At least in antitrust law, the courts, not Trump officials, will have the final say on what the law really is."
How is that any different than Obama blocking whatever mergers he tried to block?
TechFreedom's website is bursting with claims about being pro-innovation and remove barriers to techological progress, which makes it surprising that they support media consolidation and vertical integration.
Unless you think TF is just a front group for tech corporations, that is.

Most tech organizations are libertarian only insofar as it directly benefits them. They're more than happy to violate principles of privacy and free speech while attempting to grow and consolidate their market influence.

You hear this sort of crap, look at the market. Nothing is more skittish about uncertainty.
Well, well, look there. Maybe Mr. Szoka is hyperventilating a bit?
?Chip and Joanna Gaines, stars of the HGTV home improvement show Fixer Upper, have been ordered to pay $40,000 to the Environmental Protection Agency for failing to follow proper lead paint safety protocols. The government is also forcing them to discuss the issue on an upcoming episode.
Yay, compelled speech!
Trump's tweet is a reference to the infamous episode, though the president is certainly in no position to criticize other married men for such mistakes.
Trump may not be a model of marital chastity, but when was he ever so led around by his johnson that he abandoned his job and went incommunicado for several days so he could chase some foreign tail?
Re: Mark Sanford
It was an anagram.
If you rearrange the letters from "I was hiking the Appalachian Trail" you get "I was chasing a piece of Argentinian tail"
Really, you do. 🙂
Was Trump ever "missing in action" for the sake of some illicit nookie? He was criticizing Sanford running out on his job responsibilities, not the nookie in itself, and IMO Trump is just the kind to be carrying on multiple illegal affairs and yet never miss a significant meeting.
