A school shooting this morning in Santa Fe, Texas, has provoked an outpouring of grief, condolences, and ideas about how to prevent these tragic events from happening in the future.

What comments that are available from students express shock and disbelief.

President Donald Trump promised action earlier today while offering few specifics. "My administration is determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools, and keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others," he said at an event this morning.

Conservative commenters have been arguing that schools need to be made more secure to prevent these kinds of shootings.

"We need to harden these targets, these soft targets with school resource officers," Rep. Michael McCaul (R–Texas) said on Fox News this afternoon. Similar thoughts were expressed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, who told Fox that the United States should replicate the Israeli model of armed school security.

Gun control groups have called for more firearm regulations. "It's time for America to find the courage to take on the powerful and fight for our own safety. We can't wall ourselves off from the threat of gun violence—it doesn't work," said former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. "Nor can we simply arm ourselves against one another—that makes it more dangerous still."

There still aren't many mass shootings at schools. On average, there is 1 mass shooting at a school that kills 10 students in the US in a given year. There are just under 100,000 public schools in the US. They educate 50 million students. So that's a 1 in 100,000 chance of any given school coming under assault and a 1 in 5 million chance of any given student getting killed. Those are insanely low odds.

If every person was forced to go through a comprehensive background check every time the purchased a car, to ensure you do not have any DUIs, excessive number of accidents, no convictions for reckless driving or speeding, people would go nuts. If the government suddenly decided to ban all cars capable of driving faster than 90 mph people would go nuts. The real issue no one wants to discuss is why do our children think this type of violence is an acceptable response to frustration? I would argue it begins with the stupidity of every child getting a trophy so no one gets their feelings hurt. Kids were not told in the real world there are winners and losers, and you learn the most from your failures, not you wins. But since they are never allowed to fail, when they do they have no tools to cope with the loss and some unfortunately, so things like shoot their classmates. It's easier to focus on guns than on people, but if you think (like I do) that people are the fundamental problem, then we have to address the people problem. But it's not sexy and does not admit of seemingly easy responses under the guise of "DO SOMETHING!" (as long as it is what the gun-grabbers want done) And I don't really want the federal government sticking its grubby paws into our families.
