Gun Rights, Gun Control Advocates React to Texas Shooting
Politicians, activists rehash calls for increased security, regulation of guns.

A school shooting this morning in Santa Fe, Texas, has provoked an outpouring of grief, condolences, and ideas about how to prevent these tragic events from happening in the future.
What comments that are available from students express shock and disbelief.
"I shouldn't be going through this. It's my school. This is my daily life. I shouldn't have to feel like that," one student told Fox News.

President Donald Trump promised action earlier today while offering few specifics. "My administration is determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools, and keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others," he said at an event this morning.
Conservative commenters have been arguing that schools need to be made more secure to prevent these kinds of shootings.
"We need to harden these targets, these soft targets with school resource officers," Rep. Michael McCaul (R–Texas) said on Fox News this afternoon. Similar thoughts were expressed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, who told Fox that the United States should replicate the Israeli model of armed school security.
Gun control groups have called for more firearm regulations. "It's time for America to find the courage to take on the powerful and fight for our own safety. We can't wall ourselves off from the threat of gun violence—it doesn't work," said former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. "Nor can we simply arm ourselves against one another—that makes it more dangerous still."
I will not stand for this and neither should you. Parents shouldn't have to hug their children in the morning and worry whether they'll see them at the end of the day. We don't have to live in a country where politicians let this happen again and again. https://t.co/0dG76Gp5fb pic.twitter.com/H9LeY7sBAK

Sigh...
I make no excuses for my progressive views on gun control. I think firearms should be permitted under the 2nd amendment but HIGHLY regulated.
Posting armed officers at high schools is simply not acceptable. Yeah maybe in Israel where terrorists were a daily occurrence it made sense but not wrt the 20+ school shootings already this year. NOT ONE was a terrorist AFAIK. It was confused and mentally sick high school students. "The Donald" and gun supporters are severely over-reacting in a totally inappropriate way

And you are overreacting in the right way, I guess. Or you lack a sense of irony.
"I make no excuses for my progressive views on gun control."
You should.
"I think firearms should be permitted under the 2nd amendment but HIGHLY regulated."
If you think "HIGHLY regulated" and "right" aren't mutually exclusive, you're an idiot.
"Posting armed officers at high schools is simply not acceptable."
The solution to the consistent failure of politically controlled schools is to eliminate that political control, returning educational liberty to the people. Then you can send your kids to whatever school you want, while I send my kids to the schools I want.
""The Donald" and gun supporters are severely over-reacting in a totally inappropriate way"
False. As always, dumbass gun grabbers severely over-react in, yet, ANOTHER attempt to deny Americans our basic human rights because of the failures of government and the criminal actions of one person.

Thresholds of Violence
We misleadingly use the word "copycat" to describe contagious behavior?implying that new participants in an epidemic act in a manner identical to the source of their infection. But rioters are not homogeneous. If a riot evolves as it spreads, starting with the hotheaded rock thrower and ending with the upstanding citizen, then rioters are a profoundly heterogeneous group.
Finally, Granovetter's model suggests that riots are sometimes more than spontaneous outbursts. If they evolve, it means they have depth and length and a history. Granovetter thought that the threshold hypothesis could be used to describe everything from elections to strikes, and even matters as prosaic as how people decide it's time to leave a party. He was writing in 1978, long before teen-age boys made a habit of wandering through their high schools with assault rifles. But what if the way to explain the school-shooting epidemic is to go back and use the Granovetterian model?to think of it as a slow-motion, ever-evolving riot, in which each new participant's action makes sense in reaction to and in combination with those who came before?
"He was writing in 1978, long before teen-age boys made a habit of wandering through their high schools with assault rifles"
You are young.
I went to school in the 70's and 80's. You could bring guns and knives to school back then and not get into trouble in 'till about 1985 if I remember right. Then the anti gun groups got all the schools to be gun free zones. When this first happen the pro gun groups pointed out that in the end it would mean that this would make schools a mark for gun attacks, since their would be no one who could defend themselves their.
"I shouldn't be going through this. It's my school. This is my daily life. I shouldn't have to feel like that," one student told Fox News."
Two things.
1) Why? You're not special, this is shit we all deal with.
2) You don't, take some fucking control of your life and your emotions. Stop reacting like a fucking herd animal.
You're not special, this is shit we all deal with.
Unless you spend most of your day in a Gun Free Helpless Victim Zone, probably not. People who spend their days in places that don't ban the most effective tool of self defense don't seem to get shot at.
Yeah, no, we all live in a place where unexpected violence can occur at any moment.
Not really. The vast majority of the time these shooters choose places where they can be confident that anyone who follows the rules will be unarmed. Places with a sign that says "Gun Free Zone."
Yes really, cops, who carry guns with them, get shot at all the time.
And all this is really beside the point, you are literally talking about how we "deal with this" so you don't even really have a point beyond a pithy one liner and a non-sequitur.
Actually I do have a point. Before people put up magical signs to protect schools from mass shooters, there weren't many mass shootings at schools.
Take down the signs. The magic doesn't work.
Cool, then I should have said, your point has exactly nothing to do with mine, so why are you replying to me.
Oh it works alright. Just not the way intended.
There still aren't many mass shootings at schools. On average, there is 1 mass shooting at a school that kills 10 students in the US in a given year. There are just under 100,000 public schools in the US. They educate 50 million students. So that's a 1 in 100,000 chance of any given school coming under assault and a 1 in 5 million chance of any given student getting killed. Those are insanely low odds.
Why do you limit mass shootings just to schools? Apparently, you want to detract from the mass shooting problem in the US. In December 2012, a gunman walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and killed 20 children, six adults, and himself. Since then, there have been at least 1,686 mass shootings, with at least 1,941 people killed and 7,104 wounded. The US makes up about 4.4 percent of the global population but possesses 42 percent of the world's civilian-owned guns. "Guns do not make us safe. They endanger everyone of us. All gun violence is caused by gun owners."
Since then, there have been at least 1,686 mass shootings
Since the Sandy Hook shooting, there have been 1982 days. The idea that there have been almost a mass shooting a day for the last five and a half years is absurd. So you must be including group photos and billiards tournaments in your definition of 'mass shooting' to come up with a number that high.
It's sad that we are less than 20 weeks into a new year and there have been 22 school shootings...that's basically one a week.
You're just as likely to be killed in a drunk driving wreck as you are by someone with a firearm. You're more than twice as likely to die of an alcohol-related cause as you are by a firearm-related one, including suicide. But I don't see you rending your garments over our ubiquitous alcohol culture. Guess your dedication to "public safety" only applies to things you don't indulge in.
No, we haven't.
Cab drivers are more likely to get shot at than cops.
So what? No one but you said anything about likelihood.
Which has what to do with mass shooters? And no cops don't get shot at all the time. It's barely in the top 20 most dangerous jobs.
"Which has what to do with mass shooters?"
They can happen anywhere at any time, your bleating about it being less likely in carry areas aside
"And no cops don't get shot at all the time. "
There are hundreds of thousands of them, statistically, it does happen all the time.
" It's barely in the top 20 most dangerous jobs."
Nobody said being a cop was dangerous, just that they carry guns and get shot at all the time. The sheer number of them makes this a fact.
Cops also initiate violence for a living. So it makes sense that they would get shot at. In self defense.
Seems like you're more interested in defending cops than in making schools safer.
Whatevs...
Ars you fucking retarded? Pointing out the difference between frequency and probability is "defending cops?"
Fuck off.
sarc, have you made a new friend?
No, it's just Tulpa.
Yeah, that's definitely Tulpa.
Children are easily frightened, that isn't really much of a story.
Oh, it's a great story. People eat it up. It's just not that useful to a public policy debate.

Since the modus operandi of bureaucrats is to punish people whom had nothing to do with this, via eroding the rights of the innocents, I suggest that this time, we disarm the taxpayer paid security of politicians.
And ban gun free zones, they're death traps.

Gun Rights, Gun Control Advocates React to Texas Shooting
"I'll have the usual, please."
"Guns do not make us safe. They endanger everyone of us. All gun violence is caused by gun owners."
This little prick didn't own a gun.
I don't know anything about the shooter, so if I'm wrong that it was another unhappy student, shoot me.
Assuming it is, I bet they said something similar to "I shouldn't be going through this. It's my school. This is my daily life. I shouldn't have to feel like that".
When are we going to stop forcing kids into one size fits all schools and start treating them like individuals? What kind of world have we created where some kid can get so whacked out that they feel shooting is their best option and no one notices till it's too late?
I blame the public school system as it's currently implemented. We need to get everybody out of our schools but the kids and the teachers, and we need to make the schools small enough that there are good relationships and numerous enough that you can go somewhere else if it isn't working out where you are.
Hence my comment to previous article about this situation. Why is this constantly occurring at government ran "indoctrination camps" but never, to best of my knowledge, at private or charter schools?
Possibly because public school students outnumber private school students 9 to 1. Maybe it's your thing tho.
TXMex,
By your own logic and statistics, you should expect these shootings to occur in private schools 10% of the time. Does that happen? If it doesn't happen at all, this clearly indicates yet another failure of government.
Actually happened at a military school in 1981.
Actual news footage
Students like that tend to get drummed out of private schools. If given the choice of whether to put up with freaks in trench coats who dig murder and Nazis, most parents are a hard "no".
Bingo. But that's not the narrative you're going to hear from the media because questioning public education = literally worse than Hitler.
So basically, close all the government run schools and let small groups of parents hire teachers directly.
This is the only reasonable, and decent, action to take. Politically controlled indoctrination centers in the land of the free is an abomination.
"I blame the public school system as it's currently implemented."
It doesn't matter how you implement politically controlled indoctrination systems. It still is the denial of educational liberty and the depravation of wealth to fund those centers. The real solution is to completely eliminate political involvement in education systems at all levels, returning wealth and educational liberty to the people.
If the shooter isn't already dead, he should get the death penalty if only because he made Mr. Hogg relevant again. What's even worse is he now probably thinks he was a prophet.
No they captured the shooter. Police in this country cannot arrest a black man in his backyard with nothing but a cell phone in his hand without shooting him 20+ times (Sacramento), but can manage to capture an armed mass murderer with relative ease.
Maybe you shouldn't be race baitinracbut instead should be pointing out how bad Cali cops are.
I expect the usual "A attacking B gives C the right to attack D" fallacy from "liberals" while ignoring that the bloodiest. most rapacious gunslinger of all time is their beloved State.
Amazing how many occur in gun-free zones. When will criminals learn? Oh wait, they already have.
Yes. This is just one more random person who was pissed off at his own place where he spent a lot of time but instead shot up a completely different place because it was a softer target.
-"We don't have all the facts yet, but we know a gun was used, so therefore, I've prepared a list of new laws we need immediately."
-"But shouldn't we wait for all the facts before we make this political?"
-"We know a gun was used in a school, don't we?"
-"But absent any other information, doesn't that actually lend credibility to the idea that you really do want to ban guns?"
-"You just don't care about dead children! We need to have a debate about common sense gun control in this country so we can prevent this from ever happening again!"
-"Yes, but isn't a debate impossible if you label your position "common sense"?"
-"You really do want children to die, don't you?"
I will not stand for this and neither should you.

Yeah, because the old solid blue or black was totally trivially easy to see in water, unlike blue digital, which is utterly invisible, right?
(Nobody does daily tasks in dress whites.)
Overboard situations aren't the Navy's biggest problem.
Or the top ten.
Or honestly the top hundred.
A handful happen every year, some of 'em suicides.
(I found a claim from the Navy that from '06-'17, there were "over" 110 MOBs, of which 8 were fatalities.
That's ... ten a year, and not quite a single death per annum.
Not something to design uniforms around, especially since the new one really isn't any worse than the old blues.)
Ask the sailors what they think of their work uniforms.
Fight for our own safety by disarming the law-abiding? How does that work?
End the killing fields called "gun-free zones".
Allow teachers and school administrators to pack heat if they choose to.
Texas does but it is up to the discretion of each school district. There are over 100 districts in Texas that allow armed teachers and school personnel.
We need to put an end to Gun Free Zone Soft Targets that have become killing zones for the disarmed and defenseless. We need to train and arm selected and vetted teachers and staff to carry concealed firearms in secret. The American public is coming around to this point of view.

"Parents shouldn't have to hug their children in the morning and worry whether they'll see them at the end of the day. " - Gabrielle Giffords
Yet parents have done this throughout history, and will continue to do so, guns or not. Well, parents who actually give a shit about their children that is, which is surprisingly, not all of them.
Considering many, many more children are killed in car accidents each year than by guns, maybe Ms. Giffords should turn her attention to vehicle safety. How about we start by banning the use of vehicles for anything other than essential services (fire/police, food delivery, etc.) and eliminating private vehicle ownership altogether? For the children, I mean.
How about common sense traffic laws? No street needs more than 2 lanes. And no one needs to drive over 45 miles per hour. And how about not letting anyone drive until they turn 19?
45 mph? Are you crazy? You can get killed driving that fast. You are safety minded at all.
true. NO ONE needs a 700 hspwr , 210 mph automobile to do 65 mph speed limits. if 16 y/os can't own or buy guns they shouldn't drive, have cell phones or be considered for voting till they have reached 25 years old and either served 4 years in the military or supported them selves for 4 years. that includes all you equal opportunistic females also.
So he used a shotgun and a .38 Caliber revolver; both were legally owned by his father. So how is "gun control" going to address the fact that you don't need an AR or a semi auto pistol with a high capacity magazine to shoot up a school?
"Guns do not make us safe. They endanger everyone of us. All gun violence is caused by gun owners."
"Alcohol does not make us safe. It endangers everyone of us. All alcohol deaths are caused by alcohol consumers."
"Laws do not make us safe. They endanger everyone of us. All violence is caused by law breakers."
Yet another failure of government. Government run schools won't, not can't, WON'T protect you or your kids.
Can we all start profiling again? Like how all animals do with threats.
When the angry loner white kid with no friends walks around in a trench coat, can someone, anyone speak up and intervene? I don't know, like maybe his dad? Any of his 6 teachers, any school staff, anyone?! Bueller, Bueller...

If every person was forced to go through a comprehensive background check every time the purchased a car, to ensure you do not have any DUIs, excessive number of accidents, no convictions for reckless driving or speeding, people would go nuts. If the government suddenly decided to ban all cars capable of driving faster than 90 mph people would go nuts. If the government decided you were only allowed to purchase a specific car because in your state, there is an excessive number of people committing illegal acts with that type of car, people would go nuts. However, the one statistic gun grabbers over to use is how guns kill as many people as cars each year. Yet, no one has proposed a single law to address the issue of traffic deaths and in regard to DUIs, we only punish the person who commits the crime, not every person who wishes to purchase alcohol or a car.
The real issue no one wants to discuss is why do our children think this type of violence is an acceptable response to frustration? I would argue it begins with the stupidity of every child getting a trophy so no one gets their feelings hurt. Kids were not told in the real world there are winners and losers, and you learn the most from your failures, not you wins. But since they are never allowed to fail, when they do they have no tools to cope with the loss and some unfortunately, so things like shoot their classmates. Parents are just as much to blame as shown by the idiot mom in NJ who threw a fit because her daughter didn't make the cheerleading squad. Now everyone who tries out makes the squad regardless if they are actually able to perform the tasks necessary. If you look when these school shootings began in the US, you will discover they began about the same time PC and social justice garbage began to infect our public schools. When children were no longer expected to follow rules, grades were no longer given, there are no due dates for assignments and you can take a test over and over until you pass. All of this crap denies the simple reality that every decision has consequences and as a result, those consequences often mean the difference between winning or losing. Kids today, do not understand how to lose and that it is not the end of the world.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: it all begins in the family; most descriptions of the shooters depict dysfunctional families in the background. So I always ask as my first question: tell me about the family. Which nobody really does beyond the initial sketches. It's easier to focus on guns than on people, but if you think (like I do) that people are the fundamental problem, then we have to address the people problem. But it's not sexy and does not admit of seemingly easy responses under the guise of "DO SOMETHING!" (as long as it is what the gun-grabbers want done) And I don't really want the federal government sticking its grubby paws into our families.
