Andrew Cuomo Knows What Must Be Done About School Shootings: Something
None of the usual gun control proposals seems relevant to the massacre at Santa Fe High School.

Andrew Cuomo, New York's governor, instantly knew what needed to be done in response to the shooting that killed 10 people today at a high school in Santa Fe, Texas: something. "DO SOMETHING," Cuomo tweeted to Donald Trump early this afternoon. Cuomo elaborated in an open letter to the president and Congress:
Columbine. Virginia Tech. Sandy Hook. Las Vegas. Orlando. Parkland.
And now, Santa Fe.
When is enough enough? How many more innocent people have to die before you act?
You were elected to lead — do something. Your first responsibility is to the people of this country, not the NRA — do something. My heart breaks for the families who have to grieve from this needless violence — DO SOMETHING.
Upon reflection, elaborated may be too strong a verb for what Cuomo did, which was more like repeating the same vague demand over and over again. Congress and the president must do something, preferably something that pisses off the NRA, but exactly what is not quite clear.
One reason Cuomo was not more specific may be that none of the usual gun control ideas seems relevant to the horrifying crime committed today. The suspected shooter, a 17-year-old junior at Santa Fe High School, used a shotgun and a .38-caliber revolver, so clamoring for a federal "assault weapon" ban hardly seems appropriate (assuming it ever is).
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott told reporters the guns belonged to the suspect's father, adding, "I have no information at this time whether the father knows the weapons were taken." Background checks, no matter how universal or comprehensive, cannot stop a mass shooter from using firearms purchased by someone else. Nor can a higher purchase age for guns.
If the point of doing something is to make mass shootings less frequent or less deadly, it is not at all obvious what that thing should be. But if the point of doing something is to flaunt your compassion and courage while differentiating yourself from those evil bastards on the other side, almost anything will do.

Sticking pschopath teenagers into institutions is something. And unlike any ideas Cuomo has, it might actually work.
And might I add-- Christ, what an asshole.
That he is. Not a whisper of the idiotic Promise program erected by Eric Holder at DOJ that helped break the gun check system which proved pivotal in making the Florida massacre happen. When kids aren't dealt with over small stuff, some will keep going until they arrive at something an apology will never fix.

There must be an element of copy cat, throwing kerosene on the fire to all this, too.
Kids went around scribbling pentagrams on everything during the Satanic scare of the '80s because in the media, that was like the worst thing you could do.
Mass shootings have become the new pentagram or killing cats on Halloween. The gun grabbers might as well paint giant signs for psycho-kids that say, "If you want to make society pay attention to you, here's what you do: mass shooting".
Not sure about that. I think most kids, no matter how put-upon by society they feel, have a real clear sense of the difference between scrawling a pentagram on their desk and killing their fellow students. Something's going on that's changed the bar, raise the bar, lowered it, however you want to measure it, where young fucktards feel the need to kill a bunch of people.
I'm not saying that scribbling pentagrams is like mass shootings in every way.
I'm saying that they were both driven by moral panic and that kind of reaction inspires copy cats seeking to do likewise in order to be similarly transgressive.
Some kids used to go goth.
Some kids used to go black metal.
Is there anything more transgressive than a mass shooting these days?
It's like the term "banned in Boston" but for psycho-destructo kids who tortured animals for fun as wee children. You might never know you wanted to see a slasher movie until you saw it advertised as "banned in Boston".
Every time someone like Cuomo makes a huge emotional reaction, it shows the psychos what to do to get our goat--and, yeah, they want to get our goat.
If people didn't overreact so spectacularly to these things, fewer people would do this sort of thing to get famous and try to provoke a big reaction.
Some kids used to go goth.
Some kids used to go black metal.
Is there anything more transgressive than a mass shooting these days?
Maybe I wasn't clear. What I was saying is that if you fast-forwarded those same goth/pentagram/black metal kids from the 70s/80s/90s to today's world, they wouldn't necessarily become mass shooters. I mean, they could have been mass shooters in their own time. I do think that something else is going on-- somehow an extreme form of angry narcissism has raised its head and I don't have the beginning of the answer.
Every time someone like Cuomo makes a huge emotional reaction, it shows the psychos what to do to get our goat--and, yeah, they want to get our goat.
Cuomo's an idiot. He apparently doesn't realize that it's Congress that passes the laws. Unless maybe he wants Trump to executive-order "something".
His buddy Obama had a phone and a pen ...
I think it's the attention we give these people. It's a bit like the trolls here. They just want the attention. They just want to be important and for the world to make a big fuss over them.
Back in the day, it was assassinations. If a nutjob wanted to be important, he would assassinate John Lennon, shoot the pope, shoot Reagan, shoot George Wallace . . .
The assassinations of JFK and MLK, understandably, got a tremendous amount of press, and the next thing you knew, every nut job wanted that kind of attention and notoriety.
The nutjobs started going for mass shootings instead when that started getting the kind of attention they wanted. If the media and the moral panic all-stars started obsessing about arson, or something else, I suspect the nutjobs would move on to other pastures.

I believe that there is a relatively constant number of sociopaths but how they express there remorseless proclivities depends on circumstances and personal abilities. A smooth talker will con old ladies out of their retirement funds. A socially inadequate loser will torture and kill small fuzzy animals. Some will never do anything harmful to other people but become daredevils doing insanely dangerous stunts.
Gun free zones coupled with notoriety will attract a certain kind. Take away guns and they will use explosives. Take away explosives and they'll use cars. Take away cars and they'll poison the drinking water or slash throats. It's the thrill of the kill and the bigger thrill of seeing an entire society helpless to stop them.
Reason doesn't have a "plus" feature, but you got one.
It ain't the arrow, it's the indian.
Agreed. Would add, the population of pychopaths, constant in relatation to growing national population, is growing. May not have needed to be said.
What is going on is the news media abetting them.
You're implying that deaths from school shootings have somehow greatly increased recently; they haven't.
I just got paid $6784 working off my laptop this month. And if you think that?s cool, my divorced friend has twin toddlers and made over $9k her first month. It feels so good making so much money when other people have to work for so much less.

"None of the usual gun control proposals seems relevant to the massacre at Santa Fe High School."
That's because they don't want to prevent mass shootings.
They just want to take our guns away.
Just ramp up the witch hunt against autistic and homeschool kids and then act surprised when they magically turn your schools into prisons/fishbarrels. It's easy!
Because school shooters are all autistic and home schooled?
Because trying to shoot up a home school will get you real dead real fast.
Those fools teach and practice the second amendment.
Because trying to shoot up a home school will get you real dead real fast.
Even if you do manage to shoot some schoolkids, the ratio of 'resource officers' to students as well as the "resource officer's" motivation to engage is biased against success at the same level.
Let's throw more money at the teacher's unions, that always seems to solve every school related problem
Yes and school resource officers. To ask the autistic kids if they've taken their meds but in a way that doesn't come off as bullying or insulting.
Thoughts and prayers are something.
FEELZ
The letter is a perfect encapsulation of the Left's complete inability to confront reality with anything other than emotion.
I *demand* that someone do something, about everything.
It took a lot of courage to take that stand....where do I pick up my Nobel Prize?
After you use the government to spy on political opponents and ride off into the golf course.
You were elected to lead ? do something. Your first responsibility is to the people of this country, not the NRA ? do something. My heart breaks for the families who have to grieve from this needless violence ? DO SOMETHING.
Err....Isn't the governor of NY also elected to lead?
More gun registration would surely stop the madness. Or something.
To be fair, in this particular case, it literally is out of his jurisdiction by 1500+ miles.
Which does not keep Cuomo from being an ass, which he seems determined to prove over and over (and over and over and over and over and...). It's just a defense that he wasn't elected to lead in TX.
Nobody ever voted for Cuomo to be their leader. He was voted in to be the warden of the second worst lunatic asylum in the US after California. Every New Yorker (that's the whole state not merely NYC) wants to be protected from the other inmates and votes for protection, not leadership.
No, he's elected to read.
Cuomo needs to have a talk with his brother about that - it's my understanding Trump wasn't elected, he was finagled into office by Putin. #NotMyPresident. Hillary really won, the popular vote proves who the people's choice was. And besides, Trump wasn't put into office to lead, he was put into office to make it ok for the KKK to lynch black people again.
As an advocate of diversity, I'm not thrilled with the idea of the next President being another privileged straight white able-bodied cis-male. However, I could see myself voting for Cuomo if he beats out my top choices Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Elizabeth Warren for the Democratic nomination. He'd certainly be a better choice than whatever Republican runs after #ItsMuellerTime kicks Drumpf out of office.
Now I'm definitely sure that you're a parody account.
Dude, we were sure 1,700 posts ago. Xe does a pretty good job sometimes, but like all acts, sometimes you go too far, like an Aaron Sorkin screenplay.
Cuomo is seriously developmentally and intellectually handicapped. Does that count?
And while he is clearly privileged, how do you know he is a "straight white able-bodied cis-male"?
"Icould see myself voting for Cuomo if he beats out my top choices Kamala Harris, "
Cool expect gun ownership to go form 60% of Americans to 70% of Americans, and guns to go from 425 million to 600 million
The phrase "we have to do something" is the signature phrase of an incompetent person.
They don't know what to do, but doing "anything" is better than nothing.
Would punching the Good Governor of the Empire State in the face count as "doing something"?
Please say yes.
Would punching the Good Governor of the Empire State in the face count as "doing something"?
Please say yes.
The best response that I have heard when the demands to "do something" pop up after a mass shooting was this:
Everybody get together, travel to Arizona and throw flaming accordions into the Grand Canyon.
That will not stop shootings you say, but I reply "At least we'll be doing something!"
"Flaming accordion" was my nickname at band camp.
That makes me sorry that I never went to camp. I'd like to have seen what you did to get that nickname.
She set an accordion on fire.
(You kinda had to be there).
If it stops one kid from desperately and recklessly joining a polka band it will be worth it
*that killed fewer than.
I'm never using Copy-Paste again.
Too true; copy-past is an assault post tool
DO SOMETHING.
How about repealing all the laws that have no effect on such murderous rampages?
Alt-text: "DO SOMETHING. PULL MY FINGER!"
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick understands the problem: guns don't kill people; doors kill people. USA needs door-control, not gun control. "Had there been one single entrance possibly for every student, maybe he would have been stopped."

"Had there been one single entrance possibly for every student, maybe he would have been stopped."
Well yeah. You don't shoot anybody. It's a waste of bullets. You stop at the front door and light a fire there so that *everyone* is trapped inside and burns to death.
You cant tell me that guy doesn't have some dead hookers in his past.
I suspect he has a lot of dead orcs or Paladins from his 24th level Chaotic Evil Wood Elf.
If you want to do something, I'd suggest that these high-strung kids should be advised to calm down, smoke a cigarette, relax. Smoking cigarettes has been a tonic for stress and jangly nerves for generations. Notice, cigarette smoking amongst teens has gone down, school shootings have gone up. Coincidence? Maybe, but I don't think we should take any chances. If it saves just one life, after all.
You want to weigh in on this Governor Cuomo? Or do you want to continue to sit there doing nothing while some of us are willing to try something?
I definitely think that the downfall of smoking is directly related to kids not being cool anymore.
This is a real belief I have, that people think I'm joking when I say. Smoking was rad as fuck. I miss smoking. I hate that it makes you die a slow and painful death, but when I meet kids who are almost shocked at the idea of smoking, I think less of them.
can't even
How about 'do something' that would work?
Abuse the first amendment, not the second.
Out law all reporting about school shootings, regardless of the number of victims. Just issue a mass injunction/gag order preventing anyone anywhere from ever speaking of school shootings.
'something' has been done, and there will never again be a school shooting. Tree/forest, you know - - - -
TA-DA!
I second this motion. All in favor, submit your secret ballots.
The obvious answer is to outlaw public schools. No mass gathering of students means no chance for mass shooting of kids in school. This also has the benefit of being able to be implemented immediately and it does't violate the Constitution.
The idea of shoving a bunch of kids going through puberty into one building with very little adult supervision, not that they're even really adults supervising them anymore, is a HORRIBLE idea.

"This mouth is big enough to eat a Big Mac in one bite"
I'm sure you guys (and gals) have other suggestions...
"Those men tried to have sex with me!"
#repeal2A!
When six shooters are outlawed, only outlaws will have six shooters. Oh, the humanity!
Nothing more than a virtue-signaling whine fest.
I think this has more to do with modern medicines ability to mask major psychological issues through medication. There are a lot of people out there who take medication and breed that in prior generation would not have found a mate. Then the offspring, while going through puberty, experiences extremes of mental disorders and the disorders haven't been identified or medicated yet.
Just like his loathsome father, this garlic-smelling goomba, greasy from the olive oil, is out making a sphincter of himself.
Jesus, what a whop-daggo animal, in the spirit of Antonio Gramsci.
More Greek than Italian.
These gun control freaks know exactly what to do about shootings: blame, denigrate, and punish millions of innocent gun owners while ignoring, downplaying, or excusing the actual murderer.
What's Trump supposed to do? This didn't fit the defined mass shooting hysteria profile. A .38 caliber revolver and a shotgun? Are you kidding? How are politicians and the media supposed to work with that? What we ought to be talking about is how we can convince potential mass murderers to use weapons on a regular basis that better fit the narrative. Do you know how long it takes to make a new class of weapons scary in the eyes of the sheeple? Years, people, years!

Most of the worst laws ever passed in this country were immediately preceded by widespread calls for "someone to do something".
Hey, Governor Cuomo, since you're so smart, why don't you do something about the 4.4/100000 murder rate in your state?
Hey Guv, I expect nothing less from the one who lays in the street with teenagers.

How does this go, how do libs say this? It would go something like "Not my governor?"
Cuomo burnt his brain out on drugs as a kid, along with his vapid brother, fully "protected" by all his father's men.
Cuomo is a pure puppet - amazed how little attention this gets from NY citizens.
Western NY a threat to his incumbency? Hey, let's play obama and throw $billions at Buffalo to buy off that vote.
Do you wonder where that $billion goes - "all the governors men."
Racketeering at its finest with Cuomo as the mob boss.
NY govt is so far removed from the reach of the common citizen is has become a hell.
Twisted NYC brains have a stranglehold on control.
Rampant corruption and manipulation.
You can't do business in NY if you don't pay to play.
Ask me how I know - it doesn't matter which party.
That psyche is so embedded, NY govt is a crime family.
All the counties have been bought, the latest of which is Sullivan with the doomed to fail casino.
How are the other NY casinos doing = too big to fail.

The Feinstein bill is largely without substantive (as opposed to optical/political) merit, but it is not totally absent of food for thought. Forget, for a moment, the term "assault weapon," along with the various proposed criteria. Is it not likely that, if federal or state law had imposed upon the owners of ANY firearms at least some of the the obligations and restrictions Feinstein's bill would imposed on owners of the "assault weapons," and which already apply to fully automatic firearms, sawed-off shotguns, etc., the Texas boy's father would have better secured his guns, and would not have allowed his son ready access to them, except under his direct supervision? That sort of law might have prevented some previous individual and mass shootings, at schools and elsewhere, though it certainly would not have prevented all. At least it would be a measure that would be both consistent with the 2nd Amendment (the right to bear arms doesn't necessarily include the right to bear someone else's gun), and actually substantive.

Fine, let Cuomo do whatever he wants about guns in NY. He can ban them in his state as far as I care. My issue is when people like Cuomo decide not only are they going to make decisions for their state, but all the other ones as well. No where in the Constitution does it say one state can dictate to another what is legal and what is illegal but that is exactly what morons like Cuomo want to do.
Something must be done to stop all these school shootings, but make sure what you do is only what I propose and approve because any other idea or solution is unacceptable.
