Conservative Student Accuses Liberals of 'Emotional Attacks,' Liberals File Retaliatory Complaints
A pox on all the snowflakes

When Nicole Miller took a turn at a campus group's open mic night last month, the Republican student read a letter denouncing the left-wing bias she said she'd found at the State University of New York at Oswego.
"I've been on this campus for almost 3 years now and let me tell you it's been hard to show my beliefs here," said Miller, according to Campus Reform. "I've heard horror stories from other conservatives on this campus about the brutal mental and emotional attacks on them. I've had them myself. It sickens me to death that the people that preach tolerance and acceptance of all people are so openly against us and our beliefs." (Emphasis mine.)
I suppose Miller would prefer to attend school inside a safe space where no one ever challenged her beliefs or made her feel bad for holding them. In that way, she resembles the delicate snowflakes of the left who so many in conservative media (including Campus Reform) like to criticize.
SUNY-Oswego's leftists lived up to expectations as well: Last week, an administrator informed Miller that multiple students who had witnessed her reading had filed formal complaints with the administration.
"It was brought to my attention that students were uncomfortable with the letter that Nicole read during open mic last week," wrote Trisha DeWolf, a SUNY-Oswego administrator, in an email. "Anytime I receive a complaint, I have to follow up."
So liberal students were offended by a conservative student. The conservative student was offended they were offended, and said so. This offended them all over again. Thus the cycle of "brutal mental and emotional attacks" continues. No one learns anything—especially not to act like an adult.

You want to see offended conservatives? Wait a few minutes for their comments to start rolling in.
I can't wait to hear how this conservative's complaint is different.
You honestly don't see the difference or are you being factitious?
I do. I am just poking fun at the predictable responses. Look how many comments below begin with "there is a difference....".
Maybe because there is a difference. Are you brilliant because you can foresee the predictable?
I can't wait to hear how this conservative's complaint is different.
At this point, who are the conservatives anymore?
The left is more abjectly and across the board puritanical than the conservative Christian right has been since at least the founding of the Republican Party if not the Nation.
Ha! So true!!
I like how you tried to pre-emptively quash this.
To make the people who noticed that getting the authorities to punish someone for their observations isn't the same as making those observations less likely to post.
I'd like to say that it was strange to see someone so eagerly participating in the dismantling of the culture of free speech here.
But it's not.
Not anymore.
The self-describted conservative here stood up and told their peers she didn't like the treatment.
Progressives she was addressing ran to the administration to file complaints and were rewarded by their elder with a promise to act.
The first acted as an adult, the second acted as a child. The elder should have told the complaining progressive snowflakes to grow up.
Snowflakes never grow up.
It took all the way to 2:09 to get just about everyone in. I know you can do it faster next time, Rico.
My last month paycheck was for 11000 dollars... All i did was simple online work from comfort at home for 3-4 hours/day that I got from this agency I discovered over the internet and they paid me for it 95 bucks every hour...
This is what I do.... http://www.onlinereviewtech.com
It sickens me to death that the people that preach tolerance and acceptance of all people are so openly against us and our beliefs.
Tolerance and acceptance doesn't mean tolerating or accepting intolerance. Conservatives are by definition intolerant. Therefore tolerant and accepting people have a duty to be intolerant and unaccepting of conservatives.
Duh.

THIS ARTICLE WAS SO TRIGGERING I CAN'T EVEN!
There is a difference in this story. Nicole Miller had 3 years of strife and responded by making a speech.
The leftists had a few minutes of Nicole Miller's speech, which was not directed at them personally, and immediately filed a complaint with the administration.
"3 years of strife"
lol
"it's okay when the right people act like snowflakes"
"3 years of strife" is hyperbolic. But, if there is no difference between complaining and using administrative authority to silence the complainer.
If there is no difference there than clearly there is no difference between someone protesting and people trying to use the law to prevent protests.
Well, 3 years of strife is how Miller described it. Who am I to say it isn't so? Especially if it was dished out by her faculty.
Okay, 'alleged strife'.
Doesn't really change the point I and Just Say'n made.
Why are you so willing to accept the legitimacy of the conservative's feelings, but not those of the liberals'?
Why are you only able to equivocate? Discrimination is perhaps a human's most valuable mental tool.
Why are you only able to ask questions and not answer them?
Who am I to ask you why you do what you do when you do that thing that you do do?
Why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near?
Who is John Galt?
A character in Atlas Shrugged representing the spirit of innovation, spurred by capitalism and the ability to better yourself, who has withdrawn from the world as the grifters and spirits of forced charity have taken control of the economic and political spheres.
Who put the bop in the bop do wop do wop?
Charlie Parker.
In what way did he indicate any such unwillingness? He didn't. He compared the extent/timeframe, the fact of voluntary participation in activities that caused the feelings, and the actors methods of sharing their feelings (stupid admin complaint versus public discussion).
Why did progressives take the "liberal" term when they are not pro-social freedoms?
Who let the dogs out?
Who let the dogs out?
Who let the dogs out?
Who let the dogs out?
And why did they do it four times?
Because liberals have repeatedly abused the privilege?
There's a difference between publicly lamenting the tenor of debate and engaging the system to discipline the lamenter.
lol check out mr triggered right winger
Fuck off, slaver.
That is the core of this particular difference. Did the conservative speaker ever file a complaint about what she perceived as harassment? If she did, she's no better than the lefties. But if not, then she went three years without invoking the threat of Big Brother's guns, while that was the very first choice of the snowflake lefties.
Her words make her sound pretty snowflakey. I don't doubt she has experienced ostracism due to her ideology especially seeing how the other side reacted when she stated how stifling the culture they create is.
I'll call both sides snowflakes for being so emotionally effected by people holding different views. As per usual, the worse ones are the ones who try to use power to eliminate their opposition from even speaking.
She is pretty whiney, but she might also be somehow disciplined, suspended, censured, or expelled. I tend to be more on her side just because her being a whiner hasn't caused the triggered snowflakes in her audience a moment's inconvenience or loss. They, on the other hand, have more than likely cost her something tangible (e.g. thousands in tuition if she's expelled) with their spinelessness and complete absence of coping skills.
Liberals libbing. Nothing to see here.
No doubt. But Robby is talking about their emotional responses, which are very similar. This is the root of the problem.
Is it possible Miller presented in her speech an accurate portrayal of a campus mostly hostile to her?
Let's play analogy:
1. Person is abused by cops, has an emotional response and gives a speech describing the abuse.
2. Cop has an emotional response to the speech and tries to sic the authorities of Person.
Both had an "emotional response" and so both are equally yucky?
In fact, the response to her complaint supports the complaint's veracity in the first place.
Today's new top story: The decades long Victim Olympics continue!
If this is the Victim Olympics, where's Bob Costas and his insufferable commentaries? Why don't we break away from an Antifa riot to cover a wage gap protest, just when things are getting good?
"Anytime I receive a complaint, I have to follow up."
Is *that* a complaint?
There is a difference between voicing your opinion at an open mic night and using the punitive arm of the faculty to punish dissenters. Your "both sides" argument here, again, fails horribly.
Does it mean this hot take was in the libertarian oven too long or not long enough?
You copied my thoughts up above.
I'm going to start going to threads and writing "FIRST" before you get there. That'll teach you to steal my thoughts
But you copied my thoughts. May I suggest we both gang up on Fist?
Agreed. Fist's reign of flippant, yet insightful, comments must end
Can't we all just get along?
"Can't we all just get along?"
Now he's playing the race card. Shameless.
/Tom shakes head and skates away with the Stanley Cup
No doubt 'flippant yet insightful' was his nickname at space camp.
The false equivalency is intentional.
It is Soave. He seems tempermentally incapable of criticizing Leftists without swiping conservatives. Note that he does not seems to have such a block on the reverse.
Nicole Miller's LinkedIn
Not impressed.
She's probably 20 years old. What were you hoping for?
Someone who wasn't butt fugly.
Good point. Probably explains why she was ratted out to the authorities.
Don't mess with Serleena. Tentacles you know.
Conservatives need to keep turning the other cheek until they are pummeled to the ground and the boot of the fascist Left is on their neck.
What is happening? Why is Reason gone stupid in so many articles?
There is an important difference between harassing someone for their opinion and critiquing that opinion. Why doesn't Reason give us enough information to tell what is going on here? So they can make the dumb false point that someone sharing their feelings about a political disagreement is the same as somebody calling in the authorities to coerce their point? These are totally different things.
Wake up, Reason.
They have.
Reason is super woke now.
As are all progressive publications.
Soave was doing a really easy set-up for the commenters, maybe it was deliberate.
Maybe too deliberate. This only got 50 comments as of 12:00 5/11/2018.
Probably this. It amazes me that so few people have figured out that he and Shika are both trolls. His mistake here was posting so close to the time when the AM Links (or whatever they're called now) is posted. He'll only get half the number of comments that he would have otherwise. Rookie mistake, he should be ashamed.
It amazes me that so few people have figured out that he and Shika are both trolls.
And Richman. Also, ENB on occasion. And occasionally Gillespie writes a couple trolling/clickbait pieces. Welch too.
Come to think of it, sometimes it's like the whole magazine is just trolling libertarians!
I don't think Richman writes for Reason. His articles get picked up. So it wouldn't make sense that he would be "trolling". The people picking up his articles might be.
But it's also possible that since he's a left libertarian his articles just don't fit with the conservative readership here.
There similarly is no such thing as a right-leaning libertarian. The bigotry, backwardness, and authoritarianism of today's conservative-Republican-right-wing electoral coalition is fundamentally incompatible with libertarianism.
Some sheepish right-wingers saunter about in unconvincing libertarian drag, masquerading as libertarians, but they fool only themselves.
Those faux libertarian goobers tend to be the members of Libertarians For Cruel And Bigoted Immigration Policies, Libertarians For Government Gay-Bashing, Libertarians For Right-Wing Military Belligerence, Libertarians For The Drug War, Libertarians For Micromanagement Of Health Care Facilities That Treat Women, Libertarians For Race-Targeting Voter Suppression, and the like.
Carry on, clingers.

You are absolutely correct.
It is impossible to be a libertarian and lean right.
Republicans lean right.
Libertarians see Republicans as to their left. Closer than Democrats, occasionally actually stepping over the line into the right--but not quite doing much more than leaning.
The bigotry, backwardness, and authoritarianism of today's conservative-Republican-right-wing electoral coalition are all examples of left wing collectivism and statism that have seeped in and tainted the GOP.
Social conservatives, like social justice warriors, favor the 'social' over the 'conservative.
And doing so is leftism plain and simple.
Stating your grievances is exactly the same as seeking that someone be disciplined for making such a statement.

The first mistake was giving anyone of college age authority and gravitas. The second was allowing students to set policy. The third was endless media attention.
Haha so true. Fortunately, we mostly hear about the students bitching and moaning and the vast majority of the time the colleges don't "follow up", even when they pretend that they're treating these concerns very seriously.
Yes, Bob, one student gave a speech criticizing behavior of others. Others WENT TO AUTHORITIES to punish her.
Same thing. Yup.
It's snowflakes all the way down.
Since this whole safe-space nonsense started I have contended that it is not an ideological or a political issue, but a generational one. But because it plays up conservative stereotypes about progressives, it has been shoehorned into the partisan dichotomy. The general absence of progressives mocking conservative snowflakes isn't due to the latter's non-existence, but because of the political awkwardness it raises for them.
THERE'S A DIFFERENCE BETWE
Liberals are free to complain all they want. Anyone is. Who cares if Miller talks about her emotions while complaining about her treatment? Who cares if liberals do either? The authoritarian move is to invoke authority and force to protect one's feelings or ideas, on either side.
A private person should have the right to say "I no longer wish to participate in this discussion" and be left alone, assuming that they didn't just issue a personal attack, in which case they should shut up and weather the response, and then be left alone.
Public figures making public pronouncements can't expect the exactly the same, but responses should be responses to their statements, not attempts to ruin their lives. If your best response to someone's ideas is to hurt them, emotionally or physically or economically, you don't have much of an argument. However, hurt feelings happen as a side effect of fair arguments and that is not a problem to be fixed by bringing in the nanny state. Nor are stupid attacks, but there is a big difference between a moron spouting hurt and someone who hurts feelings as a side effect of thoughtful discussion.
It's called a telephone. A great piece of 19th century technology that allows you to interview people like Nicole. You don't even have to be in the same room!
When somebody says "Anytime I receive a complaint, I have to follow up", that usually means they're just going through the motions. This is kind of a non-story. Obviously nothing is going to happen to Nicole Miller and she can continue to live in fear of the emotional abuse.
What ever happened to "See something, say something" and "Advocate for yourself"? When did turn-about become not fair play?
More precisely, what do you think Miller should have done instead? Sat there and endured the hostility, abuse and bigotry without saying anything? Would you have said the same thing to blacks in the 1950s and 60s? Should women just take it because speaking up creates a scene?
From the minimal snippets quoted, Miller wasn't asking for "a safe space where no one ever challenged her beliefs". It sounds more to me like she was asking for a minimum of civility and tolerance so beliefs actually could be discussed and debated.
So I ask again, what exactly should Miller have done instead? If no one ever complains, if no one ever challenges their bad behavior, how are the bigots to learn how truly bigoted they really are?
The conservative student got up at an open mic and said she didn't like the way liberals treated conservatives. The liberals responded by filing a complaint which got the conservative student reprimanded by the administration. And Robby thinks they are both snowflakes? WTF?
Why is it wrong for the conservative student to stand up and tell liberals to fucking lay off? Worse, Robby lies about what the woman said. Here is the full quote from Campus Reform
I've heard many stories from others like me who were attacked for their beliefs," she wrote. "People had their personal property destroyed, their own lives threatened, and administration has done nothing because [we're] 'Trump lovers.'
She is asking that liberals not destroy people's property and threaten other people's lives. But Robby quotes it as
"I've heard horror stories from other conservatives on this campus about the brutal mental and emotional attacks on them. I've had them myself. It sickens me to death that the people that preach tolerance and acceptance of all people are so openly against us and our beliefs." (Emphasis mine.)
Robby takes the part about the threats and the property account and makes it sound like she is just talking about mental and emotional attacks. What a lying sack of shit. There are no excuse for this.
So sad that everything on this site needs to be fact checked. I'm kinda new here, and I stay for the pithy comments.
I'm mostly a lurker, but if this is true it's certainly disappointing.
If so, my thought is, does this guy and his editor/supervisor still work for Reason.com? Perhaps a position as assistant to the assistant for Jim Acosta would be more appropriate.
Oh shit. This writer should be fired.
Editing the quote like that completely changes this story from snowflake to actual oppression (violence and systemic bullying)
Short story: anyone can complain and get an audience these days.
I like the phrase my daughter uses to make fun of these snowflakes: "I'm offended that you're offended."
It's kinda weak sauce to complain... But there is a difference between being the aggressor and the victim. Everybody knows the leftists are the ones attacking people. Is ut wrong for someone being bullied to call out their bully? It's not like they're allowed to actually fight back. Lord knows any conservative or libertarian would be physically assaulted and then expelled if they actually got militant about voicing their opinions...
This is a total bs story Robbie conveniently left the second part of her quote
"I've heard many stories from others like me who were attacked for their beliefs," she wrote. "People had their personal property destroyed, their own lives threatened, and administration has done nothing because [we're] 'Trump lovers.'"
But Nick and the Reason crowd are forever searching and trying to find the " both sides do it" story. But only in very rare instances is the both sides meme true
At least print the entire quote

"The conservative student was offended they were offended, and said so"
Offensitivity
http://www.cedarwrites.com/201.....nsitivity/
So conservatives and liberals were offended by each other's speech. The constitution gives them the right to say what they wish and also gives them the right to say they were offended. No legal obligation for either side to response nor change. Hope it stays that way forever. Maybe one day they will understand why that is the best policy enshrined in the 1st amendment.
