Duke Students Who Hijacked Alumni Event: Punishing Us Would Hurt Us Mentally
Activists who stormed the stage were shocked when alumni in the audience dared to heckle them.

Two dozen student activists crashed an alumni event at Duke University on Saturday, using a megaphone to make their demands and drown out the speaker, Duke President Vincent Price. The students were surprised to discover that their interruption had irritated many alumni in the audience, some of whom heckled the activists and turned their backs while the demands were read.
Now Duke's administration is considering whether to discipline the students, whose behavior unquestionably violates university policy. That doesn't sit well with them: Protest leader Gino Nuzzolillo accused administrators of aggravating the mental health problems of student activists. The administration's letters informing students that they are under investigation have had the effect of "exacerbating any pre-existing mental health conditions," Nuzzolillo told The Duke Chronicle.
The protest happened during an alumni event reflecting on the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Silent Vigil at Duke, a series of student-led sit-ins on campus. Nuzzolillo and his comrades sought to channel the spirit of the Silent Vigil, although their protest was anything but silent. About 25 students stormed the stage inside Page Auditorium while Price was speaking and chanted, "President Price get off the stage," and "Whose university? Our university," until they had command of the room. Then they read a list of demands, which included raising the university's minimum wage to $15 an hour, hiring more faculty members of color, and spending more money on counseling services.
The Duke Chronicle reported that some in the audience supported the students, while others did not:
The protesters received mixed reactions from the alumni in the audience. Some alumni did nothing while others booed loudly or clapped in support. Many alumni stood up and turned their backs to the stage, some shouting vulgarities—the protesters reported hearing racial epithets.
The protesters noted that they were surprised by the extent of the alumni's negative reactions. [Student organizer Bryce] Cracknell added that he was disappointed that the administrators focused more on stopping the students than angry alumni, Cracknell said.
"Instead of actually going to the alumni and saying 'that's not appropriate' or removing them from the space, they were more worried about us," Cracknell said.
This was not an uncommon opinion among the protest's leaders. Nuzzolillo expressed disappointment that the adults "whose job it is to care for us" failed to do so.
Readers may find it remarkable that these students expected the other people in the room to applaud and validate them for derailing the event. The students also think the university should refrain from punishing them, because any punishment would contribute to their mental health problems. According to Nuzzolillo:
I think we are particularly concerned that the University knows that by sending these conduct letters out that they will be concerning the students and that they will be exacerbating any pre-existing mental health conditions and, like Bryce said, traumatizing and starting new ones, especially after Saturday's issues. I think that among the many things that we share in common with the administration, the number one thing is that we all want to see this University be better and be more accommodating and make changes. We're not sure why they're not taking that approach too and reaching out to us in good faith rather than initiating a conduct process.
These students want to have it both ways. They want to fight injustice, engage in civil disobedience like the activists of yore, and thumb their noses at the administration. At the same time, they want administrators to make them feel safe and comfortable, shield them from criticism, and play the role of the protective parents. They want to be celebrated as resistance fighters and treated like trauma victims. The student activists of 2018 require a lot of hand holding as they overthrow their oppressors.

"Two dozen student activists crashed an alumni event at Duke University on Saturday, using a megaphone to make their demands and drown out the speaker, Duke President Vincent Price. . . ."
I can't believe I have to say this again: don't EVER fuck with Vincent Price.
Seriously. Has NO ONE seen "Masque of the Red Death"?!?
I'm making over $7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life.

God, how I hate the argot of the SJWs.
Are you othering them? Because I can't even with you if you are othering them. Can you even? Because I can't even with all this violent hate speech.
Little down, Cyto. Little down.
LOL!
Unstated: why were the alumni reactions inappropriate? How were their actions different from the students? Every difference I can think of shows the alumni actions less inappropriate than those of the protesters.
They were upset that administrators didn't rush over and shush the alumni. Super affirming as to the accuracy of the snowflake epithet. JHTDC how are they gonna handle it in the real world when they get fired for not showing up to work on time to fold shirts at The Gap or whatever.
"The student activists of 2018 require a lot of hand holding as they overthrow their oppressors."
Tasty.
I find it hilarious that people who interrupt a group's event are surprised to find out their interruption isn't appreciated, and that a participant in the event (the administration) didn't rush to protect them from speech denouncing them and their actions.
Soave is exactly right - these snowflakes found that getting into the heat of thumbing their noses at the administration and alumni, caused them to melt. Seems they've never experienced debate with opposing opinions and thought everyone would agree with them. Which also says a lot about how much Duke has worked to open their minds to different ideas, say as opposed to making the university a political indoctrination camp.
Good people (SJW) = all allowed, even invading a stage.
Bad people = nothing allowed, especially not disagreeing with good people.
Are you even woke, bro?
Sure, everbody hates a crying baby but something the people who complain about SJWs seem to be crying the loudest of all.
Sometimes not something
^7th-year sophomore at Duke probably
Ohhh, doctor
Nah, just a guy pointing out there's a lot complaining around here and very little awareness.
I'll give you this, DanO, your comments are always "lit". Dumb, but definitely "lit"
I think you mean "...a lot of complaining around here and very little agreement that these protesters are sane, have any valid points, or are capable of reason."
FIFY
Awareness of what, exactly?
"there's a lot complaining around here"
He complained.
For real. If you want a circle jerk, go to the Glib site.
Do they also offer reacharounds? I'm asking for a friend.
You know who else was "asking for a friend..."
If you read a little more closely you will see that much of it is mockery, not complaining. We have plenty of awareness but it's of the adult variety.
Graham Chapman vocce:
"Dear Sir,
I wish to complain strongly about people complaining about complainers.
Yours sincerely etc., Git lit."
Yeah. Back in 1968, old farts knew exactly what to do with the damn snowflakes. Send em a letter informing them that they are no longer deferred from the draft and pack em off to Vietnam
That's the problem with kids today. They just don't know how easy things are nowadays.
You think your being snarky, but there is more truth to your statement then you realize. The truth is that life is far easier for these kids then at any point in history. That is why their constant whining is so counterproductive.
Far more truth. Those 'alumni' WERE in fact the draft-dodging snowflakes of 1968. And now they've grown up to be 4Yorkshiremen snowflakes
And personally - I think kids today are complete wusses. They SHOULD stop pretending that the older generations can be talked to or persuaded. That they are in fact entitled thieves and are the enemy of those kids and are, successfully so far, enslaving them. They should start killing us older folks. Because right now there is intergenerational war - and it's the voters who declared it on their own kids.
If they were willing to accept the punishment, I'd listen.
Even Dr King knew that some things were worth going to jail for.
There is a reason Buddhist Monk self-immolation is one of the most powerful protest in history. If someone is willing to die to get a message forth, it is worth hearing.
The problem is that protesters these days want freedom to break laws and have no punishment at all. They get offended that they would be punished for their actions because they were for "a good cause". They simply do not understand why anyone would object or oppose them.
Let's see... they want the University to raise wages for their employees... and spend more on mental health counseling (which, when I was at Duke came free with student health care, so I don't know exactly what "more" they are looking for)... and recruit more minority professors (which presumably comes with some cost as well).
.... but I thought that the rising cost of college and the burden of college loans was the problem.... maybe they haven't thought this all the way through?
Not only have they not thought it all the way through, they haven't thought it even part way through. Thinking requires effort, and thinking too much can exacerbate their mental health problems (good for them to admitting they have those, by the way!).
Plus these student 'activists' are huge pussies.
They can demand pretty much any salary they want, given they are the most sought-after thing at every college - so yeah.
maybe they haven't thought this all the way through?
One group of these University students that thought about it a little harder (maybe Duke) also wanted to lower unfair standards that were preventing minorities from attaining professorship. Which made the obvious solution to fire all the professors above any arbitrary pay level, hand all the pay to the janitors +1 and change their titles from 'Janitor' to 'Professor'.

Actually this might work as Professor Janitor PHD will make them clean dirty toilets. Thus they may get some real world skills and work ethics.
Basic economics is a tool of oppression used by the patriarchal cis-hetero shitlords to keep the Woke down.
You spelled "Wookiee" wrong.
How does Michelle Obama enter into this?
The demands of the original Silent Vigil were: to raise wages for their employees and recruit more minority professors and access to Duke for black students from a nearby segregated college.
I have no idea how 'silent' the original vigil - but I'll bet it wasn't as silent as some of these alumni want to pretend. And golly - the alumni/trustees back then were apparently also pissed at the vigil then - because they forced the resignation of the President.
Plus ?a change, plus c'est la m?me chose
Reminds of this airheaded bimbo that used to work for me when I ran a retail mortgage company. She constantly complained that we charged her clients too much. So i gave her clients a break. Then she complained that her commissions were too low when i paid her. She in no way grasped the causal relationship between gross revenue to the company, and her commissions.
The only reason I held onto her for any length of time is that she had terrific tits and brought in a lot of business with them.
"These students want to have it both ways. They want to fight injustice"
No. That's not what they want. They want to be told they are special. Then they want to be given a participation prize, eg., a college degree and a job. Then they want to be told they are special.
Reports like this would lead some to believe there is no feedback mechanism at the university. It's been a few minutes since I was an undergrad, but one would be hard-pressed to convince me that these students are being actively silenced and forced to use guerilla tactics to get their so-called voices heard. They've turned the relationship between students and faculty into a fucking zero-sum game.
More than that, they want power. They want to set up their own little communist utopia and run it.
As long as somebody else pays for it and provides protection and support (and free mental health care).
What's up with all the mental health stuff. If they have that many mental health issues how did they get into Duke?
If they have that many mental health issues how did they get into Duke?
People will mental illnesses can still do things. They still exist and live lives and such.
Though these kids are full of shit and are almost certainly proclaiming mental illness because it gives them protections rather than actually knowing about the fucking struggle.
Yeah, pretty much that--I'd honestly go with slapping them down for trivializing the experience of those with actual mental health issues. (I'm fine with using that term, since some of them actually aren't due to mental illness but the body screwing with the mind--yes, this is worth distinguishing, because this tells you a lot about how to treat and the expected outcomes.)
If they're serious, their mental health issues would be such that it would be unethical and exploitative to let them stay in college--they need to focus on dealing with their issues, or at least getting to where they understand that other people are other people and that's OK. This also is key to having a student body whose diversity is not purely cosmetic--you don't want people being not comfortable not subscribing to the groupthink.
That's a mighty fine question. It appears that student selection is based on if they are upright/have a pulse, and signed the dotted line for a student loan that bankruptcy cannot erase.
It never occurs to them that once revolutions are complete, the revolutionaries reward is customarily quality time with the OGPU, or a date with Mademoiselle Guillotine.
Yeah, just Google "Robespierre".
I think we can all agree the protesters have mental health problems. The best solution is to unilaterally withdraw them from the University so they can focus on their mental health needs.
the protesters reported hearing racial epithets.
Of course they did. It's totally believable racial epithets were used in a setting which would have resulted in immediate firing and permanent unemployability and only the protesters (but not the much closer allied alumni and recording devices) heard them.
Nobody ever confronts a SJW anywhere without using racial epithets. Don't you know nothing?
SJW's are racial epithet magnets, particularly the white ones who seem to hear them everywhere.
The protesters were likely the ones using the racial epithets.
University stages and podiums need shark cages around them to keep the animals out! And maybe some pepper spray would help, too...
These people are so much worse and insidious than the alt-right internet trolls.
*more* insidious
Because most of what the alt-right does is for juvenile shits and giggles, raising eyebrows, popping monocles, etc. The ctrl-left on the other hand believes that they are holy warriors and their insane ideas are part of Gaia's divine plan.
I'm not sure it's necessarily Gaia's divine plan, but they're definitely much less tolerant of dissent than Fundamentalist Christians in my experience.
It's nice to have a good laugh first thing in the morning. I love this story.
It would be even better if the school hired a bunch of surly Pinkerton for event security, and a series of savage beatings of all the students ensued.
Here's hoping the disciplinary regime includes a good spanking.
No, they might enjoy it too much.
What he said, except change spanking to caning.
Or paddling.
A good, old-fashioned bastinado. Unless you're Quentin Tarantino.
"The students also think the university should refrain from punishing them, because any punishment would contribute to their mental health problems. According to Nuzzolillo:" Well I do have to agree with her here. They obviously do have mental health problems, and this will contribute to them....which is pretty funny.
Now Duke's administration is considering whether to discipline the students, whose behavior unquestionably violates university policy.
There is the problem definition is one sentence. What's to consider? You got pictures and everything!
Side notes; send all of them for a 72 hour mental health observation and gun free time out. It will not only focus their (assumed) minds, it will set them up for life as documented wackos. After all, they stormed the stage with clear intent to do harm, and only the grace of God kept them from committing a massacre. By their own beliefs, words are violence, right?
Great story. Audiences need to do a better job of booing. It's very effective if people work together. It would shut down this nonsense in seconds. The students would be chastened and would learn their lesson and not do it again. At least at Duke. Of course they'll do it elsewhere but often people have to learn their lesson the hard way. But they will. The worst thing you can do is overly punish them because that will only radicalize them and convince them that they are being shut down because they speaketh the truth.
Of course there is a larger issue here which is that kids want something to fight for and socialism seems like a juicy option. Libertarian groups should be on hand in such cases to march in with their own signs. And would require only 2 or 3 pithy messages to spin the entire spectacle rapidly into absurdity.
I was taught that, if it wasn't a ball game, you did not boo a speaker. Today, however, when tv audiences break into uproarious applause at a comedian's or guest's remarks about a GOP person, it might be time for those in the audience who disagree to start some booing or hissing at the mention of Hillary's or Nancy's or Barack's name.
Absolutely. But also a reason why 'disruption' should not be criminalized. Because the blue wave dems will be spoiling to use their new powers against their mortal enemy - the libertarians.
Spoiling? Nah, it's always been that way. I remember a Goldwater speech where LBJ's supporters raised hell in the audience. Then, we went to an LBJ event and merely held up a Goldwater sign and were quickly escorted from the building by cops and secret service.
Once the message gets out that disruptive activities get you expelled, few students will have the martyr-spirit to risk expulsion, so the actual number of expulsions doesn't need to be that great to make the point.
They may be (by their own admission) crazy, but they're not stupid.
True except the one who does have the martyr-spirit could be the next Hitler.
I guess I can't disprove that.
Christ, what assholes.
I'm a Gen Xer, and assume these kids parents are mostly also Gen X.
What must it feel like to be way cooler than your kid? That's never happened before sonfar as I know. When I we were college students (late 80s and early 90s), you couldn't have paid students enough to demand being coddled and cared for by the adults, for fear of damaging their fragile mental health.
Back then, the big thing was divesting the university endowment from any company doing business with Apartheid South Africa. That was half a world away, but actually more relevant than what the crybabies of today demand.
As a parent, I would hang my head in shame to know my 19-22 year-old is mentally still in his or her terrible twos. I would feel like a total failure as a parent, and it would be weird to know I was cooler than my own kid.
Yah I went to school a decade earlier and it was all about evading your parents' and the administration's intentions.
Part of the problem is that, despite their whining, the level of real injustice in the US and globally has declined. Getting hyperbolic about trivial issues requires a mental detachment from reality, which in turn might lead to more bizarre thinking. And those of us outside the SJW bubble can't help but judge the whole modern movement delusional.
I'm willing to bet that these kids have parents who've largely encouraged this kind of behavior. So they're probably not cool either.
What must it feel like to be way cooler than your kid? That's never happened before sonfar as I know.
If you think believing yourself to be way cooler than your kid has never happened before, you haven't met a Boomer. Maybe you mean less whiny, but I'm pretty sure at least one generation has been less whiny than their parents.
Spoiled brats. They go to one of the best schools in the world. Gino needs to get his butt kicked and get thrown out. The rest should get tossed, too. I stopped donating to my alma mater when they allowed liberal idiots to bring shame upon the university I was so proud of. If they don't get bounced, stop donating.
You missed something. Once Obama had the government take over student loans, administration is now all about selling the next loan because its all to easy now. The 'customer' no longer exists, and alumni have been relegated to being potted meat. The progs that toppled the ivory tower no longer need their alumni to continue functioning: they have the treasury [and its seemingly limitless ability to borrow] just a few forms away. Education has been demolished, except where it is exclusively privatized. If there is any hope, it's that schools might get sued in states that have sufficient usury laws on the books. This is loansharking on a scale the mob only dreamed of - ignore the rates, and instead note these debt instruments are off limits just as if the "student" had suffered a prior judgement without ever being a party in court.
"They want to fight injustice, engage in civil disobedience like the activists of yore, and thumb their noses at the administration."
Let's not forget that the activists of yore were protesting against a foreign war and state sponsored discrimination. The activists of today are protesting against misused pronouns and other make believe grievances.
On the plus side, the apparent scarcity of real problems to be worried about might be a good thing. That's what i tell myself, anyway.
I dream of a world where these kids are demanding the president's impeachment for illegally bombing Syria. A man can dream
The problem is that this action is entirely within precedent set by the two previous presidents. If Congress would actually reclaim use of war powers, then it might have grounds to impeach based on illegal aggression.
Congress is just worried that each of them might get called to task if they ever authorize something that they later regret (see: all the Democrats who voted for the Iraq war and then spent years trying to blame Bush for it). As it stands, they don't have any responsibility and can always just sign a protest any time they think something wrong happened to demonstrate their right-thinking.
Cognitive dissonance.
Straight to victimhood:
"...they will be exacerbating any pre-existing mental health conditions..."
Is that what it is? I took it as a self-directed putdown, or an admission that he, and others in the group, do indeed have mental issues.
Yes, this looks like the next incremental advancement in the cult of victimhood.
How the fuck did we let things get this far? Once upon a time, and for pretty much the entire history (and pre-history) of humans, rewards and status went to those who could do things. At least among adults, in order to get stuff, you had to be able to do stuff.
For the past few decades, we have tolerated the concept that those who can't do stuff are more entitled to stuff. Is this just an expansion of childhood? Or is there some spreading mental illness?
It's encouraged by bad science. For instance, getting a bachelor's used to be a filter, and maybe 10% of the population got one. Then some statistician noticed the correlation between degrees and salary, and presto college becomes an entitlement. Of course, the correlation between having the degree and higher lifetime pay then erodes and disappears, because it was rarely about what you would learn, but more about class signaling. With the signal gone....
Not saying that some won't get something out of their bachelors, but not these kids. Put them in vocational school if there are any anymore. Instead the'll have a lifetime of debt thanks to government subsidized education! Remember kids, the government isn't really here to help you, and collectivism just means you have to bend over and take it from all comers.
This student protest at Duke indicates there may be hope for conservativism and the Republican Party after all, despite the demographic trends that disfavor the right-wing electoral coalition.
These young complainers resemble Tea Partiers and Gadsden flag-wavers -- sense of entitlement without self-awareness, boorishness, social awkwardness. Maybe they'll grow up to be Tea Partiers.
You're half right. I've been rough on them in my comments, but they will probably go on to brilliant careers in public office ? in either party!
I mean, what characterizes a politician (left or right) better than a whiny, self-absorbed crybaby that just wants his or her way, and it doesn't matter if others have a different opinion because the politician knows best.
Maybe so, Rev. I DO know that over a long lifetime, every simple "extrapolation from existing conditions" has failed to predict the actual course of events. Right now, with their stranglehold on the media (less secure than they think) and lockstep political unanimity in academia (perhaps less a blessing for them than it seems, as now THEY are the people in charge of, you know, literally doing things amirite?), current year trends would seem to predict a steady march to the Left (along with the importation of a blessedly non-white mass of reliable voters that also serves as a 'marginalized group' to pretend to care for).
That clear trajectory almost guarantees things will not turn out the way they envision.
As for demographic trends...I once heard Richard Pryor open a show this way:
"Oh! Got some white people in here tonight. Don't see many white people nowadays. Whatsamatta, y'all stop fuckin'?"
I expect those who prefer reason, education, progress, tolerance, science, inclusivity, and modernity to prevail and those who prefer intolerance, ignorance, dogma, insularity, superstition, and backwardness to continue to falter.
Wow! Me too. How about that?
I certainly *hope* you're both right and that the secular Left fails.
Arty, if you feel that way, then why are you a progressive?
Go away, Rev. We've already got OBL, and xe's way more clever.
Rev's not satire, he's completely serious. So, you should compare him to Hihn, and that would be a toss up.
The hecklers got heckled, and that's not fair? Well, there's the problem: they threw all their forces into the fray and didn't keep any in reserve to heckle the hecklers' hecklers. Better planning next time.
The hecklers want their hecklers punished, but punishing the primary hecklers would exacerbate their mental problems? If they had kept some reserves, who would be getting punished now?
They're probably not used to getting any push-back, and were caught by surprise.
These students want freedom for their actions but to be shielded from the consequences. Reminds me of Kathy Griffin, Colin Kaepernick and others. They were absolutely free to say and do as they wish but blamed everyone else because there was blowback.
Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from P.J. O'Rourke
"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences."
O'Rourke also admitted that his motivation for playing protester in the 60's was more about drugs and pussy.
Why I love the guy to this day, as that describes my strategic approach back then too. I transported people to more than a few protests, always heavily weighted toward female passengers. "Oh, sure, I can drive some of your friends to the big march Saturday. No problem."
You couldn't make up stuff like this & be believed.
And yet I'll bet most of them are perfectly willing to aggravate the condition of other mentally ill people by cruelly denying them the right to buy guns.
Let me get this straight. The anti-establishment students of 2018 went to disrupt a celebration of the anti-establishment students of 1968. And the young hippies were disappointed that the old hippies were not universally welcoming.
If I could re-write the script for this event, I would have some of the 1968 activists charge the podium and retake the stage from the modern whiners, tell them to STFU, and to go get their own real issues to protest.
And also to grow a pair.
They see the '68 alumni as sellouts. I hope one of them said:
I didn't sell out son. I bought in. Keep that in mind.
Taken from the obscure movie title, SLC Punk!
So you're saying these protesters have mental health issues?
Good to know!
Yeah, mental health issues and a definite cynicism deficiency:
1) Taught Critical Race Theory by PoC (Professors of Color)
2) Demands INVARIABLY include "More jobs for PoC at higher wages."
3) Complete failure to make a connection there, woosh...
How it must look to them:
Step 1: Learn Critical Race theory.
Step 2:
Step 3: Justice?
Anything but "profit".
These SJW appear pretty fragile and easy to defeat. All you need is an authority figure to express disagreement and they're running off to their life coaches and psychiatrists.
Remember, in their protected little world, the real currency is grades and academic standing. The are (unfortunately) free to protest things like money and political power, mostly because they do not have or need those yet. But threaten their grades and they suddenly get all selfish and greedy--and spineless.
I have often wondered about how to challenge the SJW students to put up or shut up about inequality, by proposing those with A's and B's in their course work to "donate" those to students with C's and D's, so that the mean GPA stays the same, and all GPAs are more "equal".
I was on campus at the time although not in attendance at this particular event. My reaction when this sort of thing happens at Duke is to remember that the university has excellent economics and engineering departments. It is no coincidence that you never find these indignation fetishists in those majors.
I can't speak for econ students, but engineering students don't have the time for it. And (at least when I was a student), most engineering majors came from the middle class - I'm betting the protesters mostly come from above/below this group.
That was my college experience in the early 2000's. The campus outside the engineering and science schools was a different world. There was some dipshit 'activist' with a bullhorn on 9/12/2001 screaming that our upcoming response was racist.
We experienced the same kind of thing '91 during the lead-up to Gulf War I.
Likewise during the anti-apartheid divestment shantytowns of the early/mid 80s.
All business on the engineering quad.
I went to college after I was in the gulf in 91. I took zero shit from budding campus SJWs. Occasionally had to threaten a few in my dorm with grievous bodily harm. Fortunately the hall director was also a vet. So he had my back, and told the little losers to back off and leave people like me alone. Which wasn't a hard sell as the guys next door to me we're both naval submariners, and let's face it, all that time at the bottom of the ocean made them a little wacky, even by my standards.
Same. I literally slept in the building during crunches. I did leave once to go stand around and block a Westboro Baptist Church demonstration.
Sometimes we'd study in the library for a change of scenery. Turns out normal people have fun in college!
You won't find it in most Animal Science, Forestry, Range Science or Agronomy majors either (though might be more likely in forestry or range, though still rare).
But this is because a good portion of those majors tend to be kids from rural America, the off spring of farmers, ranchers or loggers. Although, in animal science departments you often have a lot of pre-vet majors from urban centers but they tend to washbout early.
Nuzzolillo expressed disappointment that the adults "whose job it is to care for us" failed to do so.
The future never looked so fucked.
Hate to be clicked but I had graduated basic training and AIT when I was this kids age. I didn't need anyone to take care of me.
*cliched
""Nuzzolillo expressed disappointment that the adults "whose job it is to care for us" failed to do so.""
That says a lot right there. You're in college. Grow up.
How embarrassing to think yourself an adult yet consider it the responsibility of some unrelated person to care for you.
en loco parentis seems to be coming back around.
I wonder if it's from helicopter parenting, or the fact these students grew up in the shadow of the security state.
The natural state of humanity is abject poverty. Humans evolved in poverty. Even 300 years ago, when the first glimmerings of the industrial revolution were peeking through, life was poverty, injustice, misery.
Even one hundred years ago, with cars and airplanes and radio in place, life still was not very much to write home about, unless compared with 50 years before that. President Coolidge's son died in an infected blister from playing tennis, 90 years ago, that's how miserable life expectancy was.
The human race is simply not used to the idea of not having to fight for every scrap of food and shelter, and so must find something to struggle for, no matter how innocuous.
So the next SJW cause: protesting not having any good issues to protest about?
This. You also see it with their insistence on stupid shit like organic farming, anti-GMO and anti-vaccine nonsense. Yeah, lower yield, labor intensive farming was so great and having your kids die from whooping cough, mumps, measles etc was also wonderful. I am sure Jefferson had no problems with 4 of his 6 kids dieing before they reached the age of 5.
You're on to something here. With the Moore's law fueled rise of the machines on the horizon, and the Pareto principle being stretched to it's extreme, the vast majority of people are going to be bitter, resentful and mostly ... useless. They will spend their days, functionally indistinguishable, as either SJW's or trolling white-supremacists.
This is on the horizon. I believe it is the reason for the meteoric rise of Jordan Peterson - people are feeling this, and desperately want to know how to not be useless.
It all started going to hell when the high schools stopped teaching Latin. 🙂
in loco parentis, please!
The students of `68 fought against ILP for 18+-year-olds at college, back when most states had full majority at 21, and only a few states allowed anyone younger than that to vote. Uncle Sam would draft your ass, though.

You can't blame Unicorn, Google was down yesterday. #notHisFault
"accused administrators of aggravating the mental health problems of student activists. The administration's letters informing students that they are under investigation have had the effect of "exacerbating any pre-existing mental health conditions,"
The first step to getting cured is admitting you have a problem.
Slightly OT:
Does anyone else find the whole "19th Anniversary Of Columbine" exceedingly morbid and grotesque? Like it borders on sanctifying or even celebrating the shooting? I certainly get that it was a tragedy, but we weren't exactly targeted as Americans or even really as HS Students. We don't observe the 19th Anniversary of Waco, Oklahoma City, or Ruby Ridge. Dozens of Church fires and shootings won't be observed and nobody's going to remember Eric Garner or Freddy Gray in a couple of scant decades. Even 9/11 hasn't generally been solemnized on seemingly random years and it's usually referred to as the memorial or remembrance on the anniversary rather than just the anniversary.
Like saying it's OK to stand on people's graves and piss on your enemies because you're not actually pissing on the graves.
It's OK to stand on their graves when there's a concerted push to ban guns. This is an attempt to tie Columbine to Parkland.
Principals, not principles.
Plus, the number 19 is such an ungainly number.
The only people who should commemorate the shooting this year are people who had a digit shot off.
I just get the impression that had Harris and Klebold lived, when they heard about the "19th Anniversary of Columbine" they'd start wringing their hands and licking their lips or at least Harris anyway.
It gives me the willies the way Faith Of Our Fathers (the book) does.
(the book)
Or rather, short story by Phillip K. Dick...
Just media sluts.
I really do wonder if these moronic and immature students go on to get jobs, and if so, where ?
Anybody with a whiff of SJW activism on their resume would be circular-filed by me. In my bubble everyone feels the same.
My guess is silicon valley and perhaps the HR departments of large, "woke" companies everywhere.
I really do wonder if these moronic and immature students go on to get jobs, and if so, where ?
Perhaps the only thing these fragile students have going for them is that they will get to compete economically with homeschooled students, graduates of conservative-controlled backwater religious schools, and Trump supporters.
I'd rather hire, but also spend time with any of the latter groups than these SJW dimwits.
In that case, move to a backwater southern or rural community, become part of the depleted human residue that has been on the wrong end of bright flight for generations, get a job in a declining industry, join a megachurch or start tuning in to a televangelist or two, develop a taste for street pills and roll-your-owns, sign up for whatever group Matthew Heimbach is running these days, homeschool any children, and enjoy yourself.
You enjoy your strawmen, don't you ?
No, they have to compete with other students at Duke who are busy now getting more marketable degrees.
At one time I had an entire mortgage origination team composed of home schooled Mormon kids pretty much fresh off their missions. Those little Rucker's could sell, and were all well networked. They were also extremely literate, albeit a bit sheltered. Quite a number of faith based cultures have strong educational values like the Mormons. Jews and jesuits certainly come to mind.
Npnut I guess those could msideratjs go out the window when one is an anti religious bigot.
Agree, and similar experience (though in 1s and 2s, not a whole team).
A lot of things in life aren't dependent on whether you believe in evolution or that god created everything 5,000 years ago.
Show up, work hard, be able to work with others, be able to take criticism, and one can do pretty well. I doubt many (any ?) of the students in the video will exhibit these qualities.
This has to be an Onion article... just has to be...
When do the alumni get to crash the student govt meetings to "share" their demands?
We should all crash the student meeting and share our opinions.
"I think we are particularly concerned that the University knows that by sending these conduct letters out that they will be concerning the students and that they will be exacerbating any pre-existing mental health condition..."
...that affects each and every one.
They want to be celebrated as resistance fighters and treated like trauma victims.
The Social Justice Warrior in a nutshell.
Yep, I keep saying: the SJW's of 2018 need to meet some real Nazis.
"Punishing us would hurt us mentally"
"Good"
Yeah, it sounds like they need to develop some mental calluses.
Dear Sweet Jesus, Duke is an embarrassment.
I used to think that Brown was the world's most exclusive mental hospital-looks like Duke has them beat
Um...Oberlin
Evergreen State College.
Evergreen by a mile. I've been to their campus, and it is a fixing SJW hippie freak show.
You go in and disrupt someone's event and the people who are there for that event insult you and you think they are out of bounds for doing that? How does anyone come to think like that?
The protesters didn't pick the right target to play aggrieved with... Pick some person or group you can effectively marginalize, but don't pick alumni who constitute the bulk of Duke's donors. What a bunch of morons.
The Duke president likely gets measured on one simple metric... how much cash he/she brings in each year. These protesters are negatively affecting that metric. These protesters need to learn the pecking order of things: discussing and fighting racism, sexism, classism, minimum wage, homo-whatever, etc. are all well and good, but if any of that sh*t starts negatively affecting donations, you'll see just how fast the school is willing to shut down that discussion.
I'd like to think the protesters will have learned something, but somehow I doubt it.
So - what you are saying is that the snowflakes of 1968 (aka Duke alumni who managed to dodge the draft) will get huffy if a different generation of snowflakes dares to make them upset?
Usually the alumni have to read about the idiocy of their alma mater's student protests in order to be annoyed by them-- these students managed to do the one thing that would make it worse: subjecting the alumni to it directly.
On a slightly related note, Fresno State is now considering more actions against the professor who tweeted shitbag stuff about Barbara Bush dieing. I guess they have started losing donors, according to their statement. Oh and they told the press she was wrong, she can be fired if they so choose, pretty sure that was a shot across her bow. Now, we will see if she lowers her colors or not.
aggravating the mental health problems of student activists.
You can't make this shit up-I thought only non-progressives were mentally ill
I'm picturing a troop of fierce Crusaders charging toward the enemy castle, each holding tightly to the leash of his therapy dog.
You mean cuddling their therapy Chinchillas
I am not really worried about these little shits rebelling, because the first time they'd come under fire they would call for a safe space. Which we will gladly provide them, albeit it will be filled with claymores.
Were you in the military?
If so, that would begin to explain why America hasn't won a war in our lifetimes. Settled instead for a series of vague draws with ragtag irregulars from one corner of the globe to the other, despite remarkable taxpayer-provided resource advantages.
I hope we do better than your record if we are ever in genuine danger.
Whose record, Artie? The medic you see fit to mock with your pathetic gibe has neither started nor lost a war. No soldier, Marine, sailor, airman has started, or lost a war. These actions are the responsibility of Congress, and the 'somebody must do something' crowd. The voices loudest to blame fighting men & women, much like after Viet Nam, are those ignorant and blinded by their hatred. As for the ragtag irregulars, many of them are amazing people, with the courage to fight for their homelands. A courage strikingly lacking in the population you dearly love to elevate as intellectually and ethically superior to the 'clingers' and 'gun nuts.' The latter two qualities, also strikingly not quite as strongly defined as you claim, but, as you're a zealot, one expects dishonesty, and now apparently immature attacks as well. I await your ad hominem, straw man, and false equivalence.
Who needs shock and awe when you have whimpering and excuses?
Carry on, clingers. Chickenhawks, too.
Arty, the on,y reason we have difficulty in wa ris because of faggoty pieces of shit like you getting in the way of exterminating the enemy.
Expel the little shits without refunds.

I'm curious how this is going to affect the alumni donations this year.
I'm also curious how, if you can afford to go to Duke, you can't afford your own not-school-provided counseling. Last I checked psychiatrists do still operate practices that are open to the public and will listen to the mental issues of just about anyone with the means to pay them.
At least they admit they have mental health issues.
Fucking morons. Go play in traffic.
Fuck Duke.
Carry on.
'Nuzzolillo expressed disappointment that the adults "whose job it is to care for us" failed to do so.'
Bad mommy issues here.
I think it would be nice to offer those protesters a special university tuition rate that included free mental health care and a $15 minimum wage clause if they choose to work on campus. Given the typical university markup, I'd guess a bump of $10,000 / year would sufficiently cover the students desire for free stuff.
Like how the writer interviewed every protester he could find but no audience members.
Looks like the GetOffMyLawn Brigade is out in force in the comments section
I don't yell, however I have taken some advise from Louis L'Amour and posted a sign that my yard has been ranged for a .270 wsm and an AR-15.
They should be punished -if only for the stupid response letter about mental health- but they won't be.
""the protesters reported hearing racial epithets""
Yes, but they also admitted having mental-health problems, so maybe double their meds.
I welcome global warming, if it will melt these snowflakes away.
Here are a few of the "insanities" I used to unseat the establishment at university 50 years ago. MAKE LOVE NOT WAR. NEVER TRUST ANYONE OVER 30. POWER TO THE PEOPLE. BLACK POWER. POLICE ARE PIGS. BAN THE BRA. I have protected my seat ever since and won't be giving it up.
"Protest leader Gino Nuzzolillo accused administrators of aggravating the mental health problems of student activists."
Does that even need a comment?
Pampered snowflakes. How will they survive in the real world?
"Punishing Us Would Hurt Us Mentally"
And this is a Bad Thing because....?
I think it is a wonderful idea. Hurt them so bad they kill themselves.
They should all be expelled and blacklisted so none of them ever gets a job.
"Protest leader Gino Nuzzolillo accused administrators of aggravating the mental health problems of student activists."
So the Protest leader acknowledged that these protesters had preexisting mental health problems. At least that's a start.
Bounce the little bastards out on their ear. It is not THEIR school. . They just purchase education there. Once they graduate, then they can claim some modicum of ownership and donate some of their hard earned money to support the school.
I suspect that allowing the kids (and these are petulant children) to crash an alumni event, such donations will rapidly decrease, rightfully so.
One suspects they have mental problems already, and maybe should be in a different kind of institution vs. Duke.
Question: Is this David Duke U. we're talking about?
When students disrupt a university function and chant "Whose university? Our university!," the best answer is "Not anymore. You are hereby expelled."
And please, university staff, publish the names and home addresses of the protesters. We want to make sure they never get clearances, performance bonds, licenses, responsibilities, mortgages, ...
Hey kids, if you want more stuff at your school somebody's gonna have to pay for it. Enter the alumni boosters.
Anyone want to take a guess at why alumni donations have been falling precipitously at schools all over the country?
Everytime I see one of these ridiculous protests complete with self-serving demands, I'm blown away. My youngest is just 3 years out of undergrad. Just a few short years ago, students understood everything they did would potentially impact their future job prospects. What happened in such a short space in time?? I do notice that several of the students have removed all their social media account, but the inevitible google search that comes when they either apply to grad/professional schools or for a job will turn up what autocratic, intollerant little twits they are. Who would want that in their work/academic space???
My Buddy's mom makes $77 hourly on the computer . She has been laid off for five months but last month her check was $18713 just working on the computer for a few hours. try this web-site
+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+ http://www.Jobpost3.tk
These kids seem to have enrolled in a university when they needed an asylum. They clearly admitted to having mental problems several times.
Asa a condition of their student status, each other me of the protesters must submit to an involuntary 30 day commitment for observation. Release ultimately at the sole discretion of the university.
"Instead of actually going to the alumni and saying 'that's not appropriate' or removing them from the space, they were more worried about us," Cracknell said. Do these idiots hear themselves when they speak?
Somebody has to rethink the application process for a top school, educating top students who will be our future leaders. Hey kids! When you act like an asshole, people will treat you like you're an asshole. Junior High 101.
Perhaps if these idiots took out their cell phones and Google "Punishment", they might discover that punishment is supposed to hurt.
About time alumni pushed back against some of the insanity sponsored by key administrators.
Close. After beating the shit out of them, they should have been handed over to the cops, who would further beat them before processing them into the local pokey.
