Black Panther Actor Bambadjan Bamba Is a Dreamer
He came to America unable to speak English.

The cast of Black Panther, currently the biggest movie in America, includes at least one beneficiary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA allowed people who came to the country as kids to avoid deportation and apply for work permits—allowances the Trump administration is now working to end.
Bambadjan Bamba, 36, has only a small role in the film. But the part still feels like a major accomplishment, given his background: When he was 10 years old, he and his family fled the politically unstable west African nation of Ivory Coast. Arriving in the U.S., Bamba didn't speak any English.
CNN reports:
Bamba spoke French and the Mande language Jula when he arrived in a South Bronx school as a frightened 10-year-old, but he didn't speak a lick of English. Teachers put him in an all-Spanish class, where, he recalled, he felt more lost than ever.
"The African kid who spoke French was tricking me all day," Bamba said with a laugh. "I asked him, 'Hey, I want to go to the bathroom. How do I say that?' And he goes, 'Kiss my butt.'"
Bamba's family eventually left the South Bronx and settled in Richmond, Virginia, where they opened up a hair-braiding business that they still operate today.
Eventually, his parents were successful in their application for political asylum. But by the time they got asylum Bamba was 21, too old to share in his parents' newly won status; underscoring how lengthy and complicated the immigration process can be, even when would-be legal immigrants follow the rules.

I only make note of this story because it underscores just how hard DACA recipients, and immigrants more broadly, have worked to obtain the American dream. We're lucky to have them in this country, making our society more prosperous.
For more on why Republicans should give permanent citizenship to DACA recipients, read Reason's Shikha Dalmia on Rush Limbaugh's proposal to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants if they agree to forfeit their voting rights for 20 years.

I can't wait until ICE puts the hurt on this lawbreaking scumbag terrorapist. It's called obeying the law for a reason, lawbreaker.
Bamba spoke French and the Mande language Jula when he arrived in a South Bronx school [...]. Teachers put him in an all-Spanish class, where, he recalled, he felt more lost than ever.
What's worse, ICE or the public school system? Discuss.
The difference is that under Trump, ICE seems to be doing the job it was created to do.
Its amazing when government employees realize that if they don't do their jobs, they will be fired and their agency cut almost to nothing. That is what should happen if we didn't need ICE agents to enforce immigration law and secure the border.
You might say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.
Fun fact: I also couldn't speak English when I came to America.
I'll bet it took you longer to learn it that this guy.
*than (fudge)
It also took Sparky more than a decade to get a job after he arrived. It's welfare leeches like him that made America not-great in the first place.
Most newborns can't speak *any* language, right? RIGHT?!
Pshh. I was born fluent in English AND Mandarin. I forgot most of the Mandarin, though.
English too, by the looks
Whatever, brah. I speak English real good.

For all you need to know about why the Republicans shouldn't enfranchise a single DACA / DREAMer today, tomorrow, 20 years from now, or ever, research voting patterns by race.
That's right. Because as we all know, human beings are nothing more than a collection of statistics.
The most important statistic, of course, being how likely they are to vote Republican.
I know, right?
By Kivlor's own admission, the Republican Party only cares about people insofar as they are voting Republican. And that includes Kivlor too. Neither Republicans nor Democrats give a damn about him as a human being. And yet he endorses this same crass collectivism on others.
I'm more than happy to adopt Wakanda's policies.
--No immigration
--Galt's Gulch-style camouflage and a massive fucking wall to keep away outsiders
--Ethno-nationalisitic culture that puts high-trust homogeneity above balkanized diversity
So you want Fortress America and keep out all of the scary furriners?
Where does this extreme xenophobia come from?
Where does this extreme xenophobia come from?
Personal observation of life in the barrio.
By Kivlor's own admission, the Republican Party only cares about people insofar as they are voting Republican.
I said nothing about what the Republican party cares about, I said something in regards to how they should act. They won't because they are cucks.
Neither Republicans nor Democrats give a damn about him as a human being. And yet he endorses this same crass collectivism on others.
Neither party cares about me as a human being, nor about the concerns of people like me as a group, so thinking I endorse either of them is retarded. I spoke about what the smart and self-interested move would be for the Republican Party. That is all I said.
The most important statistic is whether they vote for gibs or not. And they vote for the gibs at a very high rate, as a bloc.
Statistics so racist
Further, brown people cannot escape their genetic and cultural programming, unlike white people, who are more enlightened and can express their moral agency.
It's not what people theoretically can or can't do, it's what the statistics show they actually do on a population basis.
I would not expect a collectivist like you to understand the difference.
"Math class is tough!"
-- Teen Talk Barbie
Cultural, it seems.
The Republicans aren't much of a party, but they are pretty much the only thing keeping the country from turning into Venezuela. I mean, right now, Bernie Sanders is the darling of the party. They are only going leftward from here.
Are you kidding? Who are the ones spending our inheritances into oblivion? Immigrants? No it's our current native-born big spending population which wants low taxes and high spending. If this country "turns into Venezuela", it will not be because of brown people, it will be because the native-born population demands it through their big-spending representatives in DC on both parties.
Also, Republican ideas are just so awesome, they have to resort to manipulating immigration law in order to disenfranchise people whom they believe they cannot possibly persuade to adopt their viewpoint.
We need to stand up for small government. Even if that involves enacting tremendous government action and creation of gigantic police forces!
Not even considering the gigantic police forces that Republicans want to create in pursuit of hunting down every last illegal immigrant. Do they really think that immigration restrictionism is a long-term winning strategy? How do they expect to gain more converts to the Republican cause?
Considering how conservative on many issues many foreigners are they'd probably vote more Republican if the party didn't come off as entirely against them.
^ This. In fact, 20 years ago Asians of all stripes were far more likely to vote Republican than Democrat. Especially Arabs. That all changed, for some reason.

Here's a couple that came up with a quick Google search.
I wasn't aware that this was controversial.
Democrat house organs like WaPo and the NYT have been telling minorities and immigrants that the GOP hates them ever since the Dem's ditched the Klan.
After fifty years of constant agitprop, minorities, immigrants and the GOP started to believe it and act accordingly.
Be fair, chemjeff. If Republican voters who were born into this culture reject the ideas of freedom, how persuasive can those ideas possibly be to immigrants?
You know, enabling vast amounts of immigration and refusing to deport illegals is also manipulating immigration law.
I'm confused Jeff, are Republicans manipulating immigration law as this comment or they using a gigantic police force hunting down every last illegal immigrant- aka enforcing the law.
Jeff, since Republicans are so evil...how come Democrats didn't change the laws when they had all 3 houses. Is it they don't care for these people actually and only see them as a vote so they can stay in power.
How to explain that legal immigrants (of 90% of the country is), want the laws enforced too? Do they hate themselves because they are brown?
I'm confused Jeff, are Republicans manipulating immigration law as this comment or they using a gigantic police force hunting down every last illegal immigrant- aka enforcing the law.
It's a little bit of this, and a little bit of that.
Jeff, since Republicans are so evil...how come Democrats didn't change the laws when they had all 3 houses. Is it they don't care for these people actually and only see them as a vote so they can stay in power.
Oh you must have confused me for a Democrat apologist. They don't give a damn about individuals either.
How to explain that legal immigrants (of 90% of the country is), want the laws enforced too? Do they hate themselves because they are brown?
No, it's because they're not libertarians.
Any other questions?
Oh you must have confused me for a Democrat apologist.
Easy mistake to make when you are literally engaging in apologetics for Democrats in every single post you make on every possible topic and reject basic libertarian ideas like the non-aggression principle.
Uh huh. Your every comment here is "BUT HILLARY" or "BUT OBAMA" or some other type of shitposting.
"disenfranchise people "
Foreigners don't have the franchise in the US. Well, they increasingly do where Dems rule, both illegally and legally.
You make note of this story as an anecdotal appeal to emotion. That's two logical fallacies in one. Way to go "Reason" --
Yup.
I find it telling that the current Reason push on immigration always stays lax on ... reason, and big on emotion.
(The funny thing is, I keep calling them out on this, but I'm pretty big on immigration; myself, I'd both tighten border security, and basically hand out green cards like candy, to keep the same number of immigrants.
Just, you know, all above-board and legal.
But that's a principled position I can give rational argument for, instead of appeals to emotion and Sad Puppy Eyes.
One can give principled, rational arguments for what Dalmia supports - I just wish she was doing it, since she's pushing for it.)
The "taller walls, wider gates" position on immigration - wholeheartedly agree.
And they have published numerous articles appealing to our emotions when someone or their dog is shot by a cop, or has their business taken away by the gov't.
Getting traction for a policy involves showing people the true cost of prohibition in human terms, which means anecdotes that appeal to emotion. In this case it's people instead of drugs, but the principles are the same- if you want gov't to prohibit something, you're inviting the monsters into your home, because for some people the ends always justify the means.
Bailey's post on Enlightenment Values is rather amusing when compared to how Rason promotes its pet issues.
I'm not sure why I'm supposed to give a shit.
He's here illegally. I wouldn't applaud him if he accidentally murdered somebody and got away with it.
Totally the same thing. And how do you accidentally murder someone?
Manslaughter?
Murder 1.
"procedures were followed"
You do it with a computer server.
It's impossible to have criminal intent if you use a computer server.
In what universe do you believe "arriving with his parents as a 10-year-old child without the correct papers" and "committing premeditated murder" are even in the same ballpark of immoral behavior?
Or accidental murder, even.
Or accidental murder, even.
Better than double posting.
One isn't even immoral.
I certainly give no shits about sob stories.
I certainly give no shits about your sobbing about immigrants and their children.
Continue to have fun feeding those kids because the parents are too fucking lazy to do it themselves.
Because immigrant parents are just inferior compared to native-born parents. Got it.
Pretty sure that's you, actually.
Oh boy...an immigration link.
Still not good enough. Anybody in this country, immigrant or not, should begin voting immediately after turning 16. Yes, I said 16, not 18.
(Black Panther is the best movie of all time by the way.)
^^^sneaky Russian^^^
OBL, I want to commend you for your unabashed praise of Palin Buttplug's command of economics.
His posts inform me that the Drumpf economy generally sucks ? but that if anything about it doesn't suck, Obama deserves the credit.
Why 16? Why not 6?
Did you read the link?
Lowering the voting age to 16 is the science-based position. If you can produce a scientific study proving that 6 year olds have brains fully capable of cold cognition, I'd like to see it.
How... "science-based" is that? Because, love is love and science is real.
"Science says whatever it's convenient for science to say at the moment for my purposes", obviously!
One might note that the CNN piece links the "study" to an LA times opinion piece with no specific links to any other studies.
OBL would do well to read his own links before using them as "Science is real" manifestos.
It's totally unlibertarian to use statistics about populations of people to limit individual rights.
Every individual must be judged individually, and given full rights, including political rights, until convicted of a crime justifying limitation of their rights.
Babies should be able to vote in utero.
"Every individual must be judged individually, and given full rights, including political rights, until convicted of a crime justifying limitation of their rights."
Good for you, you're learning.
"Babies should be able to vote in utero."
No, this is silly. I believe every citizen should have full rights upon finishing highschool (or equivalent GED), not some magic age of majority that does not apply to everyone anyway.
What crime have babies committed in utero justifying limitation of their rights?
Apparently a whole bunch of them have done something heinous enough to justify murdering them.
One of the most common arguments against lowering the voting age is that 16- and 17-year-olds are not mature enough to take on the responsibilities of choosing our elected officials. Studies of cognitive brain development prove otherwise, showing that brains are fully formed for "cold cognition," or reasoned, deliberate decision making, by age 16, which is the kind of thinking needed for voting.
Too bad it takes another 5 years for their brains to reach the level of cognition necessary to decide if they want to smoke tobacco or drink alcohol or buy a lottery ticket.
Bambadjan Bamba, 36, has only a small role in the film.
Was it in Atlanta or S. Korea?
Also, *spoiler alert*(?) are we really going to let the emotional horror of Killmonger's death be used to promote this immigration agenda?
From my understanding of the synopses, the whole black civilization was culturally appropriated from Ayn Rand and Northern Illinois.
[Spoiler Alert, I suppose]
Ayn Rand advocates choosing the head of government by seeing which of two men can throw the other off a waterfall?
That's about as sensible as a watery tart throwing swords at people.
If they give the job to the loser, I'd agree.
I skipped that part of Atlas Shrugged but it sounds like something she'd be into.
All people seeking political office should be thrown off a waterfall. If they survive, they shouldn't be given the job.
Ayn Rand advocates choosing the head of government by seeing which of two men can throw the other off a waterfall?
No, I meant the part where wealthy English-speakers deliver shitty 'dialogue' and do whatever they like, including blow tons of shit up, because poor people don't matter.
I think you just delivered the official Marxist synopsis of the entire MCU.
Assuming I took the movie as some sort of serious social commentary.
If I did it would be bizarre that, apparently from the previews, that the African-English speakers are 'good' and American-English speakers are 'bad' in a way that both highlights conventional 'intra-racial' divides and poorly emulates literal Western-style black/white hats.
where they opened up a hair-braiding business that they still operate today
Careful. If they're not licensed you may bring down the wrath of bureaucratic regulators on them. They hate it when people earn a living without permission.
Why didn't his family move to Wakanda?
I just received the following email from my kids' school superintendent:
Good morning Douglas County School District families,
It has come to our attention that some of our students may be participating in a school walkout today to show solidarity for the victims of last week's tragedy in Parkland, Florida. There is talk that these type of walkout events could happen at schools across the country.
Douglas County School District is not endorsing, nor hosting these walkouts, nor are we endorsing any particular viewpoint or advocacy group. However, we do respect the right of our students to express themselves as long as it is done safely. As always, school staff would ensure the safety of our students. If a parent wishes to excuse their student from school, they may do so.
The job of our staff is to facilitate the safety of our students, to minimize disruption to the learning environment and to get back to educating students as soon as the events have ended.
You school leader will follow-up with you if this happens at your specific school.
Should you have any questions or concerns about these walkout events, please contact your child's principal or feel free to reach out to me directly.
Meanwhile, elsewhere around the world children are being learning calculus with their nose to the grindstone.
We're an empire in decline.
children are being learning calculus
Jesus fucking christ on a stick.
Edit please!
No no, I think it works as-is.
That learning calculus is more important than learning how to write well?
I do wish professional educators would proof-read before sending out notices reassuring us that they'll be back to "educating" our children real soon . . .
Thank god my kid's school is on winter break and being spared this nonsense.
He has to go back.
Too late. He's already made the damn movie. Now we'll have to hear about it non-stop for the next year or two.
Winner!
And if he was Hispanic this might mean something.
I only make note of this story because it underscores just how hard DACA recipients, and immigrants more broadly, have worked to obtain the American dream. We're lucky to have them in this country, making our society more prosperous.
Obviously I'll hold judgment on this until I see his acting.
But he's not the only one.
Not by a long shot. Puff pieces like this will keep Robby and Shikha busy for a couple millenia.
I guess America is not so racist after all?
Of course Robby gets the Black Panther beat.
not sure what the fact of this guy's immigration status has to do with anything. i completely support Hollywood hiring actual African actors to play Africans. where he lives is immaterial.
The only thing about the movie (which i have no plans to see) that struck me as mildly-interesting is the idea of a super-properous and well governed african country. Why is it so? because they vigorously exploited natural resources to their own competitive advantage. Haven't seen any lefties (who mainly seem to want to cheerlead the fact its "black", as tho this is some great achievement never before seen in film history) yet comment on this horribly capitalist and environmentally-exploitative angle.
or note that the only place Africa is prosperous and well-governed is in fantasy films.
And suddenly I'm curious where you think outside of fantasy films is "prosperous and well-governed". I'm pretty sure saying "USA" would make you a big-government statist slaver.
White folk gave us communism, progressivism, socialism, and all of their progeny. Notwithstanding the foregoing, would you rather reside in Nairobi or Newport, RI?
I didn't say "what place is a lesser evil". I said "what place is good". Quite a different question.
Indeed, it is an altogether different question.
Nonetheless, without hesitation, the answer is Anarchatopia! Some of my black and brown brothers might offer Wakanda.
Well, you're not Gilmore, but that's about what I suspected.
Which is to say, if you can't (or won't) name a "prosperous and well-governed" place that actually exists anywhere, it seems odd to make a point that no such place exists in Africa either.
I'm trying to figure out what you're actually asking me, but i can't get past why you added [sic] to a sentence where nothing was incorrectly spelled.
My point, if it was not clear to you was, roughly:
"africa is almost entirely filled with shithole countries, many of which combine the worst aspects of socialist ideas with petty-dictatorships and ethnic/tribal mutual oppression; and despite both colonialism and cold-war interference having receded either decades ago, or in cases up to half-a-century ago, many have actually managed to end up worse-off without said outside-interference."
The movie's theoretical depiction of a thriving, prosperous, enlightened, utopian African society is probably the least-plausible aspect of it. The super-powered cat-person thing is easier to believe.
My comment had nothing to do with countries outside africa.
Apparently the fictitious culture is a weird mix of supermodern and primitive tribal. I expect in a decade this film is going to be all.kinds of problemstic to the intellectusl successors of those praising it with great praise.
A brown person told me that Blaxploitation films don't count as motion pictures which feature an authentic representation of black and brown people.
A lover of black and brown people insisted that the Black Panther pic is the very first motion picture to (a) feature an almost all black and brown cast AND (b) truthful portrayal of black and brown people.
A race realist told me that black and brown people and their SJW apologists, defenders, fans, handlers, and manipulators either are too dopey to remember the pics set forth below or they like to lie:

Tyler Perry has a film studio in greater Atlanta area and produces all sorts of black-centric movies and tv programs.
Anyone who says Black Panther is some unique film because of some blackness is a dumb shit.
lc1789 -
Thanks, I had forgotten all about Tyler Perry.
He's big here in Georgia.
I laughed because you had roots twice. Original and new version? Any black person worth their salt would know roots because it was a big deal in 1976 with the book and then mini-series in 1977.
It had OJ in it.
BTW, for all of you race baiters and race pimps out there, some of my favorite films featured a cast of mostly black and brown folk. Examples, A Soldiers Story, John Q, School Daze, and The Nutty Professor.
The Nutty Professor.

I'll take Eddie Murphy's Sherman Klump, thank you.

Did not see those two.
Black Dynamite, quite possibly, the greatest cinematic achievement of the 21st century.
oh, but the superpowered cat-person thing is cool. I see now.
Maybe Marvel and DC can negotiate a marriage between him and Catwoman.
Or better yet a relationship with Wonder Woman resulting in an alliance between Themscyra and Wakanda to fight some evil force. That would be a story you could go anywhere with.
Comics are all about creative story telling. I am looking forward to seeing Black Panther. My son just saw it and loved it and he has seen them all.
" (b) truthful portrayal of black and brown people."
The world has waited forever for a truthful portrayal of black and brown people in a secret magic literal kingdom with king with super powers from magic plant and world surpassing technology from mountain of magic asteroid metal.
What is Wakanda's immigration policy again?
"DACA allowed people who came to the country as kids to avoid deportation and apply for work permits?allowances the Trump administration is now working to end."
Translated for Honest People:
Trump, while offering to grant legal status to 1.8 million DACA eligible illegal aliens as part of a deal on immigration law, has not yet said that he will agree to *further extend* Obama's illegal executive order granting temporary license to violate US immigration law with their continued presence in the absence of such a deal.
"Black Panther Actor Bambadjan Bamba Is a Dreamer"
Wakanda would have murdered him and his family when they tried to pierce Wakanda's borders.
The cast of Black Panther, currently the biggest movie in America, includes at least one beneficiary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA allowed people who came to the country as kids to avoid deportation and apply for work permits?allowances the Trump administration is now working to end.

Umm ... yeah. The big problem is that someone can stay in the US for a quarter of a century without gaining the full rights that come with citizenship. My greatest priority is streamlining the process so that a new arrival gets citizenship in 2 or 3 years. Deportations of illegal aliens don't bother me. I would like us to grant 500,000 to 1 million more visas though a lottery system that is open to residents of all countries so that we're not using immigration for social engineering. The other visa options we have are problematic, but I won't make the perfect the enemy of the good.
Eventually, his parents were successful in their application for political asylum. But by the time they got asylum Bamba was 21, too old to share in his parents' newly won status
Naturally this is a total and complete lie. When they were granted legal status his parents immediately became eligible to sponsor their parents, their siblings and all of their children. He just would have had to leave the country and go through legal channels the same as every other legal immigrant who he jumped ahead of in line because he's just so fucking special.
"Bamba's role in "Black Panther" is small. His character, not prominent enough for a name, is credited as 'Militant Leader.' When he spoke to CNN the week before the film opened, Bamba wasn't certain if he made the final cut of the film.
"But he did. He even has a line."
You can't make this stuff up.
Obviously no American was qualified to give that line
