Behold the Work of Russia's Evil Advertising Geniuses
Satan is on Clinton's side, and check out this coloring book featuring a buff Bernie Sanders!
Today members of the House Intelligence Committee released some of the election-related ads placed on Facebook and Instagram by accounts linked to the Russian government. The sampling published by Politico seems inconsistent with the way politicians and journalists generally portray "Russian disinformation," which they describe as a plot to "reshape U.S. politics" and undermine our electoral process by sophisticated operatives who know how to manipulate American voters. In fact, the ads are so lame that I initially thought the Politico story was a prank.
Here is an October 2016 Facebook ad placed by "Army of Jesus":

According to Politico, the ad, which targeted "people age 18 to 65+ interested in Christianity, Jesus, God, Ron Paul and media personalities such as Laura Ingraham, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Mike Savage, among other topics," generated 71 impressions and 14 clicks.
This April 2016 Instagram ad, aimed at "people ages 13 to 65+ who are interested in the tea party or Donald Trump," did much better, generating 108,433 impressions and 857 clicks, although it is not at all clear how it might have influenced the election:

Politico also has an August 2016 Instagram ad, aimed at "people ages 18 to 65+ interested in military veterans, including those from the Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam wars," suggesting that Clinton is insensitive to the grief of Gold Star families. It generated 17,654 impressions and 517 clicks.
An anti-Clinton, anti-establishment, pro-secession ad placed by "Heart of Texas" in October 2016, aimed at people who liked that Facebook group, generated 16,168 impressions and 2,342 clicks. A March 2016 ad sponsored by the Facebook group LGBT United featured a "Buff Bernie" coloring book, "full of very attractive doodles of Bernie Sanders in muscle poses." Aimed at people who liked LGBT United, it generated 848 impressions and 54 clicks.

In addition to these crude and clumsy efforts, The New York Times has noted a hoax that anyone familiar with American politics would recognize as utterly implausible, language on the DCLeaks website that described Clinton as "President of the Democratic Party" and referred to her "electional staff," and a tweet promoting the website that said, "These guys show hidden truth about Hillary Clinton, George Soros and other leaders of the US." Such misfires suggest that the ability of Russian propagandists to destroy American democracy may have been exaggerated.

Uh I think I might have been exposed to Russian propaganda online. What should I do?

Lather, rinse and repeat, lather, rinse and repeat.
Tomato juice?
WHO DOESN'T WANT JESUS TO WIN?
Although, now that I look at it, that just might be Paul Rudd in a fake beard and mullet. Seems like a cold front moving in, too.
I can't tell Ron Paul, Paul Rudd, Rand Paul, or Paul Ryan apart anymore! Wat do?
I just hope Russia has a good lawyer when BUCS sues them for ripping off his van mural.
My feud with Russia goes back way longer than that, ever since I was sold a shitty pierogi outside of Leningrad. Said it was a beef one, was actually chicken. This was back in 2000 or so, but obviously I couldn't let that stand.
Every since then I've been secretly placing millions of ads on Russia social media and in Russian newspapers supporting Vladimir Putin. Let's just compare the supposed Russian's results towards mine and you'll see that I outwitted those commie fucks.
Blaming the Russians for Trump is like blaming the Drumpfenc?cken on oxycontin.
Everybody's fahrfrumpuken. Say the word, and the oxys will flow like the energy from a thousand fuhrer's sons.
Um, the target is people so fucking stupid they would consider voting for Donald Trump for president. I think the Russians knew their audience quite well.
The first bit is true. But they still did not plug into the rationale of the Trump voter at all.
The Trump voter ethos was more of giving the middle finger to the establishment, the elites, and the party operatives. I have avoided in-depth conversations with Trump voters about politics, but it still seems to me that the only consistent thing I've heard anyone say they like about him is that he did not back down and he did not apologize.
I seriously doubt that anyone who views themselves as a Christian, even a bunch of straight up Moral Majority theocrats, is going to enjoy that ad. It is almost an atheist parody of what a Christian voter would like.
Come visit the Bible Belt sometime. You think you know stupid? That kind of thing might be framed and placed in someone's dining room.
The target would be people who were on the fence, and that's why they pushed Hillary Is Evil and Bernie is Magical stuff less than Trump is So Great stuff.
These are the ravings of someone who is absolutely desperate.
Fence sitters are not going to be turned by lame ass crap like these examples.
The effect of these, assuming they even have any sort of effect, is the true believers get a little bit of rah rah out of them.
DaveSs|11.1.17 @ 5:44PM|#
"Fence sitters are not going to be turned by lame ass crap like these examples."
Well, it seems people who were going to vote for the hag were influenced by them. At least according to Tony and others.
Oh, and he therefore calls Trump voters 'dumb'.
Well, Reason is renowned for its thorough and objective assessment of things. Definitely no cherry picking of the worst examples, not at all like a Ron Bailey global temperature update.
It's just that every time a fence sitter explains why they went for Trump what spews forth is a bunch of the same inane Hillary Is Evil conspiracy horseshit. It doesn't really matter who made it up in the first place, whether it be a Russian teenager or Alex Jones. If you are saying people didn't believe that stuff, including like probably a majority of the people here, then you're lying.
If you click through to the politico link you can see other examples.
They all look like your average everyday idiotic meme, little different than the leftist memes that float around about how socialism is so awesome, or the Kochs want to murder brown babies in their cribs or other such stupidity.
Good fodder for the true believers. Useless at convincing anybody of anything.
Or for that matter, political ads about rednecks in F250s driving around looking for brown children to run over.
Never change, Tony.
None of it was as true as Piss Trump!
Tony:
"It doesn't really matter who made it up in the first place..."
And I see what you did with the goalposts.
Jonathan Gruber was right.
Was he Jeremy Irons character in the 3rd Die Hard movie?
Right,
To me it looks like the propaganda campaign was actually more about making sure the citizenry was at each other's throats by providing things to fight and stereotype others overthan it was about getting any one person elected.
Yeah, it seems like "Russian trolling" is probably a lot more accurate than "Russian meddling".
I have myself spent a little bit of time in OK, and yes - I can see why you feel like a big a fish in that tiny, tiny mental pond.
Oklahoma is one of the most Republican-dominated states, so by the logic of almost everyone else here, that means it's one of the smartest.
I sincerely thought this place would switch away from its anti-Obama/Hillary hysteria now that Republicans control everything. Guess it's is even more useless than I thought.
Someday you'll realize this is a libertarian site. And someday, long, long, long after that, you may start to understand what that word means.
Tony on his death bed will scream 'I GET IT NOW!" just before he passes on.
Tony|11.1.17 @ 6:08PM|#
"I sincerely thought this place would switch away from its anti-Obama/Hillary hysteria now that Republicans control everything."
Given that pathetic losers like Tony are constantly inventing new excuses and lies about how the hag lost, griping that they keep getting attention is more than a little hypocritical. But what's a little hypocrisy to some adolescent in denial?
I know stupid, I just replied to his/her/xis comment.
"Come visit the Bible Belt sometime"
Pretty sure your time in the "Bible belt", Tony, consists of four hour increments at 39,000 feet.
The only possibly valid argument is that a few thousand people were convinced by these ads to change their vote and that swung the vote in the swing states with small margins (although all three of them is hard to believe).
However, the press's and the Democrats' implications and constant hysteria keeps implying not only that every single Trump voter is a die-hard Trumpster (incredibly wrong) but that every Trump voter was convinced to vote for Trump from these ads.
The only possible way Hillary lost is because people believed lies about her. They're still in denial.
Thus ensuring Trump's reelection.
Btw the economy is growing at 3%. Obama had it down to 1.6%. Soviet level growth.
I suppose you don't realize the irony of giving the govt (Trump or Obama) credit for the private economy. "You didn't build that"
The hacked emails won the election. These ads made a smaller difference. Every motherfucker in Russia from the Kremlin to the street corner believes Russia elected Donald Trump. This place was slow to even acknowledge the Russian influence campaign and many of y'all here have been belittling it ever since. Y'all were wrong initially denying it happened and you're off base now dismissing the little you do acknowledge occurred.
Question: Would you feel better about the DNC hack if it was Anonymous that hacked them? Does the source of the hack delegitimize the released information? Honest question for you.
I think that Obamacare actually won Trump the White House. The election was a referendum on Obama, after all, and enough people didn't want to continue with those policies. Everything else was just noise.
Other than the 2.86 million more people that voted for Hillary than Trump.
Please reread what I wrote. "Enough people" not "the vast overwhelming majority of people".
Um, the target is people so fucking stupid they would consider voting for Donald Trump for president. I think the Russians knew their audience quite well.
If only stupid ads had been thought of in 2008 and 2012!
I think the Russians knew their audience quite well.
Better than Clinton did, that's for sure! Zing!
"Um, the target is people so fucking stupid they would consider voting for Hillary for president but then were swayed by stupid ads. "
FTFY
And thank you Tony for illustrating the typical Hillary supporter. No wonder she lost.
They really don't get that unbridled arrogance and sh*tting on people don't inspire them to vote for you.
The people are corrupt/lazy/stupid and easily manipulated/exploited/poisoned by the propaganda/hacking/facebook ads of the foreign country/race/cyber force which is why we must bomb/round up/regulate them and stamp out any internal dissent/sympathy/trolling by our own pacifists/psychotics/libertarians.
- The Modern Autocrat/Despot/Congressman's Manifesto
Powerful stuff. DNC brought down by conservative memes from the 90s that look like they were made by someone with mediocre artistic skills.
Yeah - if this is all it took to take the Democratic Party down, well that's just . . . sad.
That's the embarrassing thing that no one wants to talk about. Voters that WOULD have voted for Hillary absent these ads, swung for Donald Trump. Tony conveniently skips by this point even though he's implied it about a hundred times.
Dems copied Green econazi platforms to make electricity a controlled substance. They could've copied the LP legalize-it plank. The GO-Pee imitated the libertarian gun and energy planks. Voters favoring those platform planks made the popular vote come out dead even. Some of the Dem electors could have cast multiple electoral votes for Libertarian candidates. Roger MacBride did that in 1972 and La Suprema Corte, promptly used the LP plank to legalize abortion in Roe v. Wade. But noooo...
So now I want to know if Bernie's plan for government healthcare includes subsidized access to bodybuilding drugs. Asking for a friend.
Just one and it's halotestin. Turns out, Bernie's physique is mostly genetics and his understanding of steroids is actually on par with his understanding of healthcare and economics.
As subtle as Rosie O'Donnell at Golden Corrall.
I'm sure that flipped a lot of would-be Hillary voters to Trump.
Just got to the part in Legacy of Ashes where the US ambassador to Chile looked at the propaganda campaign of the CIA to prevent Allende from taking power and called them a bunch of morons for completely misunderstanding the Chilean people. Apparently, the Ruskies went to the CIA propaganda school.
Hey, that's as good as my joke yesterday about a Russian ad:
"Study is show people that vote Trump have big penis."
In fact, the ads are so lame that I initially thought the Politico story was a prank.
Exactly my thoughts. The stuff the so-called "Russian Ads" are made of is hilarious.
although it is not at all clear how it might have influenced the election:
NPR skipped past this burning question at least a dozen times this morning. Apparently, it was about eyeballs. At one point, they claimed the ads reached over 300,000,000 eyeballs, which by my rough estimation would be every American over the age of like 6.
It's like the Manchurian Candidate, but with millions of voters instead of a lone assassin.
eyeballs so if ten people see something you count the eyeballs to get twenty and if half have glasses thats another twenty making for forty or is it fifty now, it doesn't matter since liberals are all about science even when they can't add. maybe thats how they get global warming numbers
"This is Izzy. He is Jew. He votes for Hillary. You are genital, so vote for Trump."
I always somewhat suspected that Izzy was jew.
http://the-site-that-rhymes-wi.....1922508800
"We still have vodka left over from Yeltsin's stash. It's free for anyone who votes Trump."
And the hag's voters fell in line!
Smart bunch right there.
hell, that would probably persuade Hillary to vote for him
"Your interests indicate that you are a Brony. Vote for Trump and I promise not to make fun of you, you decadent Western weirdo."
"Have we been mentioning the vodka?"
"Look, Putin says if we don't get Trump elected he will make send us to Siberia to hunt polar bears. Just vote Trump and say that Russian propaganda made you do it, I'll really appreciate it."
"Look, here is Bernard Sanders dressed as cowboy, police officer and Indian. He has penis unlike Hillary (we think). Plus he was fan of Mother Russian in good old days."
This April 2016 Instagram ad, aimed at "people ages 13 to 65+ who are interested in the tea party or Donald Trump," did much better, generating 108,433 impressions and 857 clicks, although it is not at all clear how it might have influenced the election:
The other ads are stupid, but I'm not sure what is supposed to be wrong with that picture. Is the kid's gun even real?
The Jesus one got only 14 clicks? That ads hilarious. How did it not get a million likes at least. Sounds like fake news.
I might have shared that just to pass on the cringe factor.
Why would Russia want Americans to grow up learning how to shoot? More fake news.
"So we can have Cold War again! Fun times, full employment for secret agents!"
The Devil went down to Russia
Looking for an election to steal
He wanted to use Russian servers
To make an overseas appeal
He met the Archangel Michael
And said "Mike, you don't have a clue.
I can seduce all the American souls
'Cause I hack elections better than you."
Michael said, "I kicked your ass once, devil
And I can kick it again
I'll try to hack the election for Trump
And you try to hack it for Clinton."
So the devil campaigned for Clinton
He used the MSM
He had all the progressives
Working to help him win
The devil said: "No war on women!
Vote for her and get free stuff!
She'll leave the Treasury unlocked
Just loot until you've had enough."
Michael said "my candidate is partly with you
But you bet I'll still win
Stand back and watch me make the case
For putting the lesser evil in:
Michael took out his sword
And wrote a message in the sky
It was a very simply message:
"Trump isn't Hillary."
The devil screamed and lashed his tail
'Cause he knew that he'd been beat,
So he switched to making up excuses
For Hillary's defeat.
He said: "I've done some deep soul-searching
And anyone can plainly see
That the cause of Trump's win
If misbehavior by someone other than Hillary."
Where can I download the full choir version? The one with the fiddle solo?
I can't seem to find it, will this do instead?
Is there a yodeling edition? Just asking... for a friend.
Watch him folks, cuz he's a thurly dangerous man. You may not know it but this man is a spy, he's a undercover agent for the FBI, 'n he's been sent down here to infiltrate the Cue Klux Klan.
Would you believe this man has gone so far as tearing Wallace stickers off the bumpers of cars? And he voted for George McGovern for President.
Well he's a friend of them long-haired hippie type pinko fags. I betcha he's even got a Commie flag tacked up on the wall inside of his garage. He's a snake in the grass I tell ya guys, he may look dumb but that's jus a disguise. He's a mastermind in the ways of espionage.
I don't know which is more hilariously fucked up; your 'original' piece, the fact that the original lyrics to Uneasy Rider play or fit as well today with Rednecks and Coastal elites, or that it all makes Charlie Daniels seem like a goddamn genius.
"But I couldn't believe it... I just had to find out for myself and I couldn't conceive it because I never did listen to nobody else!"
Apparently, they're closet libertarians.
Nice:)
Keep those eyes on Russia folks. Nothing to see here
True, nothing to see with your link.
Try again
None of those people had Russian names, what's the relevance?
What are we looking at here?
Nobody looks at the Dem energy plank or the energy and gun planks the GOP copied from the LP. So as long as we're being silly, the ads look exactly like government-subsidized ads and artwork for communist and fascist looter parties anywhere in Latin America. 2. The talking-about-other-people comments here are less clumsy than the ones over at conservative and progressive websites. (They never mention the possibility of voters reading the platforms either).
"...ads placed on Facebook and Instagram by accounts linked to the Russian government.."
And what are these "links"? Some analyst's "educated" guesses like with the hacking stories?
So.
Hillary gave the farm to Russia on the uranium deal.
Hillary gave in on every foreign policy issue the Russians wanted.
The Russians hated her so much they gave half a gazillion dollars to her 'charity'.
They hated her so much they paid ol' BIlly Jeff a million dollars for a 'speech'.
And we are supposed to believe that they made a real concerted effort to elect Trump?
mesa be thinking no.
Everything you say is Russky fake news. It's the circle of untruth.
Here's what I heard from a progressive friend yesterday: The Russian uranium deal is a fake scandal because the deal had already been approved at several levels of expert bureaucracy and Hillary was just signing off on what the experts decided, no corruption involved.
Thoughts?
Sure. Fake scandal.
When George W. Bush accused Iraq of having WMD, he was citing information that also had already been approved at several levels of expert bureaucracy and Bush was just signing off on what the experts decided. That was a fake scandal too, right?
Well, GW Bush hadn't taken a Kurdish donation to his Foundation so I don't think it's quite the same.
That's so hillary-us! And Hillary-us is just the name for things we do together!
The Clinton uranium conspiracy is the perfect example how loose you motherfuckers are with facts and how poorly you reason from said facts. I don't know how some of you feed yourselves.
I don't think I've ever seen anything as weird as the comments on that Politico story. People talking trash to each other over how the Russians turned them against each other. Apparently, the Russians are making them talk trash to each other in the Politico comments section. They don't seem to realize that they can simply stop calling each other names.
Them Russians are damn insidious, aren't they?
ARGH! THOSE GODDAMN RUSSKIES
I think the PizzaGate propaganda/disinfo op was much better, it even had the editor of the New York Times commenting on his refusal to cover the story when it was hot, if I recall. I'm sure the King Brothers learned some valuable lessons.
King Brothers = KGB, an old Soviet secret service, like a civilian GRU, or our own CIA.
I would vote for Bernie if Frank Zane was his VP. Best bodybuilder Evah.
Why is Putin wasting his time being dictator of Russia? Surely, if he could swing the U.S., election with $100,000 ad budget, he could head up the most successful and lucrative Madison Ave. firm of all time. He could sell Edsels to everyone and convince us Lena Dunham is Playmate of the Year.
"aimed at people ages 18 to 65+"
#Blunderbussmarketing
And at those who live on earth! And who can fog a mirror!
The only color I see is green. And social security numbers start at zero.
PIZZAGATE FOR THE RUSSIAN WIN!
Give it up for the Reason web-site crew!
Tony asked for examples of the hag's baggage, and I gave him a link to a 2015 WaPo article dealing with that exact subject, along with comments regarding later hag sliminess.
It all seems to have disappeared into the Reason "Hole of Incompetence", which is the reason, Matt, that my contributions over the last couple of years have totaled $0.00.
Hope you have a good time in London; did you ask anyone to mind the store? Or is that too much to ask of a "celebrity"?
Hey, those ads convinced Republicans
Just the rethuglicans aka white trash flyover basic bitches
We talking about the people who voted for Obama or the people who always vote republican and hence don't need to be convinced to do so?
That Jesus ad cost $1.10. When are we finally going to get money out of our elections?!
Apparently the assault against democracy is silly hamfisted doodles.
If these type of ads actually control the outcome of democracy, then how much respect am I supposed to have for it, really?
The argument that these are stupid and thus had no effect requires quite an assumption. Either they had no effect, or they had some effect. If they had some effect, perhaps they had a large enough effect to change the outcome. Americans are very stupid, after all. To claim that this propaganda effort changed no minds is not credible. Thus it changed some minds.
"The argument that these are stupid and thus had no effect requires quite an assumption. "
But it's nothing new. It's important for us to maintain the pretense that money spent on campaigning/electioneering has no effect on voters.
Democracy is the highest value we can embrace.
Except when we lose. In that case, God, why are people so stupid? We need censorship now.
But, when we win, well, democracy is awesome, and the decision-making ability of the people is sacred.
That's how you know how much we love democracy!
"Except when we lose."
You should consider a career in finance. They've never yet 'lost' an election.
I assume that it was Hillary's turn now. And that means she's a victim. And any influence that wasn't pointed in her direction can be blamed.
I bet we could write a book about all of them. Maybe we should call it What Happened to my Whiny Bitch Victim Ass?
Tony, the FBI has already said these ads and other Russian "fake news" sabotage had no discernible effect on the election outcome. James Comey, the Trump hating truth teller who has a book out, said as much in a hearing. Why do you keep ignoring this? Less than 5% of voters even saw these ads.
Notice that these transparently amateurish ads got like 500 likes? And pro democrat ads (BLM, Bernie) would offset the other "right wing" ads.
Americans, including super smart liberals on the media, sometimes fall for Onion level parody articles. But that's because the writers actually make the effort to mimic real life reporting and the "fake new" being peddled is handled in a plausible way. No one fence sitting voter was going to make a final decision based on any of these ads. Most stupid people are already partisan and made up their minds.
I think you're making some rather shallow assumptions about these ads. The "Army of Jesus" Facebook group isn't aimed at Conservatives if you ask me. It's red meat for the atheist left (and even Libertarians) to be the actual manifestation of their straw-man Republican. It's actually a gross caricature of exactly what the left hates, and what independents may find objectionable, about Evangelicals/Southerners. It's actually not "lame" but quite sophisticated, and subtle enough that many here (including the author) still clearly misinterpret its intent. I think the assumption that Russia would be so "clumsy" or "lame" in their manipulations is quite naive.
Has no one noticed that the Russians have a whole cable channel? RT (Russia Today) is a propaganda cable network. If you listen to their commentaries it is hilarious because they have such a weird perspective on US politics and the US in general that their commentaries don't make any sense. This also applies by the way to the online ads everyone is freaking out about: they promote all kinds of odd things and certainly don't support Trump. For example, some point out racism in America and support BLM.
I really like the Buff Bernie one.
What's hilarious about these is that it's so obvious they were troll pages. They also give a good insight as to how Russians view American political ideologies.
