The House narrowly passed a budget that cuts federal taxes but also scales back state and local income tax deductions, prompting a small group of Republicans in high-tax states to vote against it.

  • Twitter has announced it is banning all ads from Russian-owned news networks RT and Sputnik. Call me dumb, but I don't think it's the advertising from news outlets that are obviously and openly connected to Russia that was the problem on social media here. RT responded by claiming Twitter had attempted to sell it election-related ad packages last year.
  • Today the National Archives is releasing a bunch of previously secret files about President John F. Kennedy's assassination. Twitter has already beaten me to jokes about Sen. Ted Cruz's dad. Also, they might not be released.
  • Former President George H. W. Bush has apologized again for apparently patting or grabbing women's butts when taking photos with them after a second woman came forth to complain.
  • The Catalonian separatist leader in Spain has put the question of independence before the area's parliament, which might vote on Friday, even as Spain's senate votes to use emergency powers to take direct control over the region's government.
  • A fireworks factory in Indonesia exploded, killing at least 47 people.

A fireworks factory in Indonesia exploded, killing at least 47 people.

But what a way to go.

    1. Chinny Chin Chin   8 years ago

All right, move along. Nothing to see here. Please disperse.

      1. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Is there anyone who didn't picture this when reading that headline?

      Hello.

Twitter. Putting the Twit in Twitter.

  2. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

The House narrowly passed a budget that cuts federal taxes but also scales back state and local income tax deductions...

    Libertarian moment?

    1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

Great. States should not rely on the Feds to cover up their own overzealous taxation.

      1. Rat on a train   8 years ago

Also kill the mortgage interest and charitable donations deductions.

        1. CatoTheChipper   8 years ago

          Just kill Schedule A.

          1. CE   8 years ago

So I have to pay more? How about just cutting spending, and eliminating the income tax?

        2. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

I'm okay with the first, iffy on the second. Beyond on all else, we should have to pay for our excess. If we're going to go drunk and hog wild with our budget, we need to be willing to pay out.

          1. CE   8 years ago

And by "we" I assume you mean a per capita tax where everyone pays the same dollar amount.
Let's see, 4.147 trillion divided by 325 million Americans equals 12,760 USD per person.

            1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

I am fine with that. Hell, that's LESS taxes for me. The only point is we need to pay for it somehow and it is hubris that we want it both ways.

  3. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

...prompting a small group of Republicans in high-tax states to vote against it.

Or prompting high-tax states to rethink their taxing schemes?

    1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

      Nah.

    2. CE   8 years ago

The high tax states are controlled by people who like high taxes.
But there are a few gerrymandered congressional districts with Republican incumbents who can't vote to stick it to their own voters.

  4. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Former President George W. Bush has apologized again for apparently patting or grabbing women's butts when taking photos with them after a second woman came forth to complain.

NO ONE IS SAFE. Not even the infirm.

        Exactly.

  5. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

Former President George W. Bush has apologized again for apparently patting or grabbing women's butts when taking photos with them after a second woman came forth to complain.

      1. Juice   8 years ago

As long as no one ever tells me, I'll be ok.

        1. Rich   8 years ago

"I'm here to give you super sex!"

          "OK, I'll have the soup."

      2. CE   8 years ago

        It's mostly saline solution anyway.

  7. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Twitter has already beaten me to jokes about Sen. Ted Cruz's dad.

And in turn to us. Stupid twitter.

    1. Chipper Morning Truthjammer   8 years ago

Never go for the obvious joke. That's my motto. Make some obscure reference that no one will get, and then feel smug about it.

  8. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

    Shackleford, you're dumb.

    1. Juice   8 years ago

  9. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

...I don't think it's the advertising from new[s] outlets that are obviously and openly connected to Russia that was the problem on social media here.

Shackelfrod, you dummy, don't you understand just how stupid the American voter is? Their vote is directly tied to their gullibility, which means democracy in the United States be doomed.

The U.S. government was in danger Thursday of missing the deadline to release a trove of previously classified records from the assassination of President John F. Kennedy

The danger, of course, being the mandatory death penalties for missing the deadline.

    1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

I don't think the word "danger" means what they think it means.

    2. CE   8 years ago

The Catalonian separatist leader in Spain has put the question of independence before the area's parliament, which might vote on Friday, even as Spain's senate votes to use emergency powers to take direct control over the region's government.

Meanwhile, because of the senate's inability to do anything more than talk, the Trade Federation in orbit of Naboo is fighting with Jedi Knights for control of the Death Star plans.

The House narrowly passed a budget that cuts federal taxes but also scales back state and local income tax deductions, prompting a small group of Republicans in high-tax states to vote against it.

Those deductions should never have been put in in the first place. Let the people in the shitty-ass blue states experience the consequences of their decisions; congress shouldn't be giving them special treatment.

    1. John   8 years ago

It will be interesting to see if this causes real tax revolts in the blue states. I am skeptical. But there must be some chance of that or else they wouldn't be screaming like stuck pigs over the prospect.

    2. CE   8 years ago

There's a whole lotta shells to hide that pea-sized tax cut under.

    3. Adam330   8 years ago

This headline is completely wrong. The budget isn't a tax bill, and doesn't cut taxes or scale back state and local income tax deductions. It's just a required procedural step in getting to the tax bill. A lot of Rs voted against it because they fear that the tax bill will ultimately scrap the deduction.

First of all, have you seen me without makeup? Secondly, aside from that unfortunate trick of catching someone in a scowl at the moment the shutter snaps, I'd say she looks damn fine-- like it looks like she rolls out of bed that way, which is awesome.

Keeps that person's face in the mags. Also, lots of the manufactured news comes planted suggestions from agents. In other words, much like what happens in the political world.

While RT's Russian ownership (and, frankly, obviously-run-by-the-Kremlin-ness) is not secret, you might be surprised how many people in the US simply don't realize it, on the assumption that the rest of the world is like the US - free media and no state-run outlet.

(I do not, note, think this means Twitter should ban their ads, just that "everybody knows they're just a mouthpiece" is sadly not so commonplace.)

    1. Juice   8 years ago

Thanks Scott! Assassination buffs will be thrilled to know that Gutenberg.org (where contributions are welcome) has been quietly converting the entire carload of Warren Commission documents into reliably-vetted text files for download. Most, if not all of the material is already posted. Naturally there are questions about how autopsy notes were deliberately destroyed and how the gal who interviewed Jack Ruby promptly turned up at the morgue. Oswald's friend George Sergius de Mohrenschildt's suicide shortly after a letter to CIA Director George HW Bush--as reporters knocked on the door--is the whipped cream topping befitting a Sherlock Holmes mystery. Sequels, please!!!
