Hospital Won't Let Dad Donate Kidney to His Sick 2-Year-Old Son Because of Gun Arrest
Parole violation means dad has to wait three months to donate

A.J. Burgess, a 2-year-old boy born without functional kidneys, is in desperate need of a transplant. His father, Anthony Dickerson, a perfect match, was prepared to undergo transplant surgery until he was arrested for violating his parole.
Dickerson was "in possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies," according to WGCL-TV. He's been released from prison, but the hospital won't perform surgery until his parole officer gives the okay.
That could take three to four months—the hospital wants to revisit the issue in January. Of course, there's no guarantee Burgess will live that long. He has to undergo dialysis every day. His body is failing. He has to have bladder surgery. He needs a kidney now, and a highly motivated donor—his father—is willing to give him one.
What dad's criminal record has to do with it is anyone's guess. The hospital has declined to answer reporters' questions, citing patient privacy laws.
Dickerson has made some bad personal choices in his life—he's been in and out of jail for years. Now he's trying to do something positive, and the hospital won't let him, primarily because he was involved with a weapon when he shouldn't have been.
Not to put too fine a point on this, because there's plenty else going on—it sounds like Dickerson was involved in criminal activity, independent of his illegal gun possession—but I suspect liberals like to imagine stricter gun control means a peaceful and voluntary gradual disarmament of a gun-weary citizenry.
Maybe that's gun control in theory. In practice, stricter gun control means giving the government more reasons to interfere in the lives of black and brown people who are already wary of the police. It mean rap sheets of low level offenders become lengthier—they did something bad, and they happened to have a weapon while they did it, even though one had nothing to do with the other. It means more people in color getting caught up on technicalities that ruin their lives and endanger the lives of their children.
Burgess's mother has set up a GoFundMe page for him here.

I have no doubt that the parole officer will make sure that the child dies, and take great pleasure in doing so. People who seek out that job exist to spread pain and misery.
Sounds like you have some personal experience with this. Care to share?
The wonders of bureaucracy!
Rule of law........................LOL.
Yeah, for Reagan, Thatcher, and American exceptionalists.
You know who else was an exceptionalist?
Hmmm. Leave a comment.
Uh... I'm having a tough time coming up with one.
How about "Holy Shit!"
No, that doesn't seem to cover it. Eh....
I kinda have a box for "parole officer doesn't give a rats butt about the harm caused". So that could make sense. But a hospital that would jeopardize the life of a kid over something like this?
No. I got nuthin'
the hospital makes more money maintaining the kids life until he can get a kidney. win win for the hospital

Progs never look at it that way. They always see gun control as something that will be used against those icky redneck people in flyover country. Surely our government, the source of all justice and light, would never turn its guns on our little brown brothers!
No.
Progs want *everyone* controlled. Including themselves.
They yearn to be the domesticated animals of the state, and demand that you be made one too.
True, although I wouldn't totally count on it, given the racist history of progressivism.
Too bad a similar phenomenon seems to be increasingly infecting certain types of right-wingers. They're outraged over new ID laws and other government intrusions, and they insist that all them dang dirty illegal furriners must be rounded up and sent back where they belong. Trying to get them to see that these two things might be linked is like trying to explain quantum physics to a Labrador retriever.
Personally, I observe that the UK, Canada, Germany, etc have fewer guns than we do and thus have far fewer gun deaths. The people in those countries don't seem like "domesticated animals of the state" and seem to be able to overthrow their governments just about as easily as we can.
Sorry to bring my racist progressivism to the straw man party you guys are having.
Speaking of straw men....

In the old days of Kidney dialysis, when the procedure was rare an expensive, there was a 'community ethics' board (I'll try to google later to remember what it was actually called) which picked who got to get dialysis based on a long questionnaire which essentially tried to suss out your moral compass and worth as a human being. The committee was colloquially called "The Life and Death Committee".
This kind of crap may be a holdover from those times.
Found it.
Seattle. Of course.
Well, it was the 60s and Swedish Hospital was at the cutting edge of care. It's just interesting to see how healthcare ethicists construct their moral codes.
If that one sentence doesn't make you hulk out, it's like you've never had a single gamma ray ever.
"Children were also excluded because, it was felt, they might be traumatized by the procedure."
thats BS gold there. I had mine removed as a child and no harm was done, no harm was doen, npo ahrm was done.......
All joking aside mine was removed and I'm good

They just have to work a kidney transplant into gender reassignment surgery. Then they can make the taxpayers foot the bill and it's a liberal/cultural libertarian win/win/win.
Hospital Won't Let Dad Donate Kidney to His Sick 2-Year-Old Son Because of Gun Arrest
I fail to see how the two are related.
Because, as Rebel scum, you are not capable of group think, and attempt to inject logic and reason into everything.
IT SAYS GUN!!!
That is all you need to know. Evil incarnate. The kid might inherit some kind of gun gene that cannot be edited out during the transplant.
Maybe some of the Atlanta Falcons players ought to go take a knee in the parole officer's office, or the judge, or the hospital? That would be far more effective, possibly, than taking aim at the national anthem for injustices that occur at the local level where their input can be valuable.
The hospital should do the surgery anyway. How are they going to stop it?
That's what I am thinking. Is the hospital in danger of breaking any laws, or is some hospital administrator just being an asshat?
Is the hospital in danger of breaking any laws, or is some hospital administrator just being an asshat?
My guess would be both. There's probably some obscure law that prohibits felons from donating organs (because evil can totally be transmitted this way /sarc) and some pencil pushing prick who's "just following procedures."
By not paying for it.
Remember, it is the government who dictates who gets paid what, either directly or thought fascist control of the healthcare industry.
This is local to me, and from what I've seen explained, as far as how it relates to his being arrested. My understanding is that it is a rule of the board that controls transplants, not the hospital. And it has to do with the fact of him having been in jail (or going to jail) and exposure to things in jail. So they can't confirm that he does not have communicable diseases, or won't have at the time of the transplant.
So test him.
It's not necessarily that simple, some illnesses require a certain timeframe to show up on tests but I'm no expert.
it has to do with ... exposure to things in jail. So they can't confirm that he does not have communicable diseases
Anybody who has set foot in a jail had jolly well better not be donating blood.
I would assume (yes, I know) that "perfect match" includes being disease free.
Nation Of Lawz? bitches!
Remember when the GOP ran that attack ad where the "rats" part of "bureaucrats" flashed up on the screen before the rest of the word, and a lot of people got mad? That ad was extremely offensive to rats.
I suspect this relates to Prison as a hotbed of various illnesses that could complicate the procedure, but really who knows. That, or it relates to immunizations that are given to Prisoners complicating the issue. Those are the only factors I can think of offhand that might be pertinent.
If that were the case the hospital could have simply stated "we are waiting for test to be completed" then no mystery but like the buarucrates they are they have to make iot into something it isn't
Well, obviously the child is better off dead than having a kidney from a dirty gun toting criminal. /sarc
You think the gun grabbers don't know this? They do. They just figure that's a small price to pay to criminalize their political opponents.
Every law, every rule, every regulation is a gun pointed at our heads.
Eric Garner is dead because selling loose cigarettes is illegal in New York.
So the dad had funds in hand to pay for these procedures and they won't take his money?
Hi. We're from the government, and we are here to help you. Now die kid, and end the bad press.
Reason making this about color. You know white people get charged the same for commiting crimes while armed
To be sure, donating kidneys had often been used in the past to stage Shawshank-esque jail breaks, and one can only speculate about the father's ulterior motives...
I also saw an update with this story that the dad was violated for drug test violation and Emory medical center does not want to give the kid a drug tainted kidney.
Not sure this is fact but that would seem like a reasonable reason for delaying the transplant. The transplant has been delayed not cancelled.
If the father dies in the meantime, that probably greases the skids for getting his organs.
