Well, it seems to me that the only difference there is that the law and constitution say it's not allowed for California to stop a person from Nevada known to be likely to commit a crime from crossing the state border and say that it is allowed to stop someone from Somalia from crossing the national border. The question is what justifies that distinction? And if borders are good and necessary for security, why wouldn't restrictions and searches when crossing state borders also be good and necessary for security?

I'm not taking a strong position here. I think that in the imperfect world we have, it's probably rational and good to have some control over international borders. And that restrictions on state borders would be an unreasonable restriction of liberty. But it is an interesting question for those who think that tightly controlled national borders are a necessity and pose no dilemma when it comes to individual liberty.

As nearly half of all gun deaths are suicides, mental health care must become a top national health priority and must be properly funded. And by making it more difficult to purchase a gun - and requiring its storage outside the home - easy access during a suicidal moment is denied.

I have a hard time articulating how unreasonable I think that is. We talk about suicide as if it is something that should never happen. By doing we completely remove maybe the one type of ownership we as humans have, our choice over our own lives. People claim that when someone commits suicide they are mentally unwell and thus are not competent at that time. I think that is a horrendous statement, removing people of their inherent will and volition.

I hate that shit.

It's just a topic that elicits some very emotional responses. Kind of like drug abuse, ultimately it comes down to an individual making a decision(s) over their own life. However, there is a lot of collateral damage, as far as suffering and grief, for friends and family. So, naturally, people insist that something be done to prevent that individual autonomy.

I believe it is, Thou Shalt Not Kill. Suicide is Self-Killing. Therefore it is a mortal sin. Do many traditions make a big deal out of suicide other than Catholics? I know Catholics take issue because you die in a state of mortal sin and are unable to either confess or receive Last Rites.

Most translations go with 'Though shalt not Murder' (Exodus 20 - 13); so I guess it becomes a matter of interpretation and whether it would be considered self-murder. I don't think it's as big a deal with Baptists as it is Catholics, but its definitely... frowned upon, if that's the right phrase.

The basic premise that scripture returns to on the issue is God's authorship of life and death and our usurpation of such power (seen especially in the Old Testament). Also, for the Christian, the importance of how our lives (and deaths) and united with Christ's (a central tenet of Paul). That might be a start to find Baptist writings on the issue.
