    Tom Petty, R.I.P.

Are we certain? Are we sure he's not going to come around here anymore?

    1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

Sorry, Eugene. We got all the Petty puns out of our system yesterday.

Fist is a Johnny-come-lately? Oh how the links have fallen.

Equifax now says that the personal information of an additional 2.5 million people was affected by the data breach of its systems.

Now includes all of the non-existent people eligible to vote in Chicago.

To put it in perspective, that's a fraction of the number of people who attended this year's inauguration.

The penis and butt surgeries went way wrong. And a fake doctor will pay for it

Former South Florida plastic surgeon Mark Schreiber, notorious for botched plastic surgeries over decades, is headed back to prison ? this time for butt enhancement and penis enlargement procedures gone awry in Miami.

Schreiber agreed to spend 44 months behind bars on two counts of practicing medicine without a license.

When he gets out, the 62-year-old ex-doctor will also have to pay $145,000 in restitution to the victim of the butt implant, according to the plea deal struck last week in Miami-Dade Circuit Court.

    1. Crusty Juggler - Lawbertarian   8 years ago

Schreiber also pleaded guilty in the separate penis case, although the case was hampered because the victim was reluctant to testify in public. He operated on a man in 2015 who had received a botched "penis filler" operation from another suspected illegal doctor.

When the man regained consciousness at home, he discovered "blood-soaked bandages" and that his penis has been "mutilated," according to court documents. The victim sent text-message photos of his mangled genitals to Schreiber, police said.

      Just jelq, bro.

      1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

They should be kicked out of the United States. When the French Foreign Legion tried to overthrow De Gaulle, they were banned from the country - they were too much of a threat to their sovereignty. We should shut down Langley and for them to move to any other country stupid enough to host them.

How Betsy DeVos is quietly erasing Obama's education legacy

Vox unintentionally shows that Betsy DeVos is the most bestest ever.

the proposed cut to Title II could impact the professional development of 2.4 million teachers. Cuts to the class size funding would result in more than 8,500 teachers across the nation losing their jobs, according to analysis from the National Education Association, the nation's largest teachers union.

Title II has not been without criticism over the years; many people, including Obama Education Secretary Arne Duncan, have said the program needs more data to show that professional development benefits teachers.

"If you can't answer that question in a clear and cogent way, you've got a problem," said Mike Soules, president of Corwin, an education publishing company that provides professional development materials to many of the nation's schools. "It's an absolutely critical moment ? it's the moment of what do you believe in, where do you think dollars should be spent and why."

Money should be spent to teaching lazy teachers how to use ipads in classrooms!

When it's burrito day at the Cleveland Metropolitan School District in Ohio, the district's executive director food and child nutrition services Chris Burkhardt has to plan things out carefully. The premade salsa has a lot of sodium, so his staff cut it with diced tomatoes and pair it with low-sodium taco meat, to make sure the burritos aren't too salty. Then he has to make sure he's not putting too much fat or sugar into a meal to compensate for the lack of salt.

"You could get one side correct, but you could get other side wrong," he said. "A lot of times we hit the mark, and sometimes we don't."

Burkhardt said the whole-grain pasta was fine if it was served right after it was cooked, but "if you hold it for any length of time, it becomes a gelatinous mess. Whole grains tended to be more mealy; they had a different mouthfeel."

When kids don't like school lunches, districts lose money. For instance, in the Los Angeles Unified School District, the nation's second-largest, students threw out at least $18 million worth of food per year, the district's food service director told the LA Times in 2014.

A lot of this "professional development" stuff is a pointless racket that's designed more to separate teachers from their money than to improve school curriculums or student performance.

Well, it is a mandatory employment type (as in the Government has ensured that it is a field where there must be warm bodies, no matter the cost) so it's hardly surprising a vast and wasteful cottage industry has grown up around it.

I mean, just take a gander at textbooks for college classes and tell me I'm wrong. Hooray, subsidy! It definitely doesn't distort markets!

The funny thing is that she is an entertainment lawyer. Her whole career is based on keeping her clients from saying stupid shit on social media. I would love to hear her explanation of why she thought posting that was a good idea.

I'm being a little facetious but not much. People like her don't like rural folk, don't know them, and don't want to know them. It's another example of why the media was so shocked by the results of the 2016 election.

Conservatives don't like liberals and progs. There is no denying that. But progs seem to have an outright bloodlust towards their enemies. It is gone well past the point of being disturbing.

          1. lap83   8 years ago

The comments in that article are exhibit A to your point. One basically said that what she said was fine because conservatives are anti-PC. Because being glad that people were murdered is the same as being against the idea that everything you don't like is racist or Hitler

USC professor's 'episode' led to campus scare, LAPD says

A USC professor suffered "some sort of an episode" that caused students to believe there was an active shooter at school, triggering the campus scare and police response on Monday, police said.

LAPD Deputy Chief Phillip Tingirides said the professor, who was not identified, told her students to lock the doors and get on the floor. Then, she began yelling, "active shooter."

The students became fearful and began texting and calling friends, telling them there was an active shooter on campus, Tingirides said.

Many even alerted police, who responded to the campus immediately. This all unfolded around 12:17 p.m. in the 3500 block of University Avenue.

I bet the students wished they could have changed the channel!

Skipping breakfast tied to higher risk of hardening in arteries

People who skip breakfast may be more likely to develop atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, than individuals who start each day with a hearty meal, a new study suggests.

Even after researchers accounted for diet and other risk factors for heart disease, people who routinely skipped breakfast were significantly more likely to develop atherosclerosis compared to individuals who normally had a morning meal, the study found.

"A greater percentage of energy consumed earlier in the day may favor cardiovascular health," lead study author Dr. Valent?n Fuster of the CNIC in Madrid and Mount Sinai Heart in New York City said by email.

Breakfast is like sex in that something - whether it is a bow of oatmeal, a Denver omelet, or your very heavy neighbor who smiles and waves seductively - is better than nothing.

Another entry into the "Police are monsters" file: Two La Crosse residents arrested for having sex in car; suspect says cop was 'blocking' him

Bailey Puttkemery, 21, and Emily Scott, 20, both of La Crosse, were nude in the backseat and engaged in sex, the report stated. The officer asked the couple to stop, then stood at the back of the vehicle and waited for them to dress.

When they didn't emerge from the backseat after five minutes, the officer found the couple resumed sex.

The officer opened the door, which Puttkemery tried to shut before telling the officer that he was "blocking" him, according to the report.

"You're a man. You should understand. It's Oktoberfest weekend," Puttkemery told the officer while standing nude outside his car.

Guns are banned in the UK and even saying that you think people have a right to self defense gets you run out of society. I guess Trevor didn't notice that.

I was at an event at the Kennedy Center this fall and he was playing in one of the other theaters. The crowd was like night of the living dead. You could almost feel unthinking conformity and smugness in your eyes.

Between John Oliver and Trevor Noah and whoever this other new Aussie guy is, I have to wonder what other country you can go to where foreigners can come in and start talking shit about the country and they get rich and famous doing it? Is there a British or Canadian or Australian late-night TV show hosted by Ted Nugent talking about what a bunch of loser pussies there are in those countries?

      1. John   8 years ago

I keep seeing commercials for some guy trying to be the new Stephen Colbert. He has some new fake news show where he gives some grotesque caricature of anyone who questions any sort of leftist dogma. I never found Colbert to be that funny, but he did have his moments. But this guy, holy shit, it is just awful, painfully unfunny. He seems to actually be less funny than Oliver and Noah, who were, in turn, less funny than Stewart and Colbert. Where does this end? How unfunny will the next guy be?

        1. Rhywun   8 years ago

Not as unfunny as Samantha Bee.

          1. John   8 years ago

He has some new fake news show where he gives some grotesque caricature of anyone who questions any sort of leftist dogma. I never found Colbert to be that funny, but he did have his moments.

It's The Opposition with Jordan Keppler and for about 5 sec. I thought Comedy Central had recovered from it's TDS and finally figured it out, then the commercial kept going. Colbert walked an edge where he would occasionally score an 'own goal'. The Opposition seems like exactly the sort of political comedy that would come from a mind like Lena Dunham or Anita Sarkeesian. Like if you just mashed Stephen Colbert together with Ron Burgundy, you couldn't possibly miss.

          The Infowars parody guy?

        4. BYODB   8 years ago

None of those individuals were actually 'funny' is one problem. Were they, at one point, hilarious? Sure, that's how a career gets made. After you 'arrive' as a host, you're allowed (forced?) to drop any pretense of comedy and just repeat the religious dogma of the left.

Compare this to guys like John Cleese, who's politics I almost entirely disagree with, and you'll see the difference. While they disagree, they also recognize that Comedy shouldn't have politics.

Then, when you compare to a guy like Mel Brooks, you really start to see the difference. Guys like Noah, Colbert, and Stewart are just mouthpieces for other interests masked as entertainment that is masked as news. It's like a nesting doll of lies.

          1. CE   8 years ago

    7. mad.casual   8 years ago

Trevor Noah: 'I Have Never Been To A Country Where People Are So Afraid To Speak About Guns'

OK, I've been quiet for too long on the subject. It's obvious after the events of this past weekend that the human mind or psyche or whatever is frail. That even the most composed and seemingly well-situated man can, at a moments notice, lose all rationality and commit completely repulsive and heinously murderous acts for no other reason than his broken mind can generate in the moments he is compelled by it. I'm convinced that we can no longer sit idly by while a lone individual takes it upon himself to take the lives of other people on an unprecedented scale. That to remain inactive while tens, hundreds, or even potentially thousands of lives are lost simply because of the heartless actions of one man is a terrible and morally reprehensible crime.

All of this is why in this moment of ongoing national tragedy, I renew my call for reviving and expanding The War Powers Act to include not just boots-on-the-ground conflict but drone assassinations, missile strikes, and nuclear attacks as well. These decades-long tragedies that claim far more lives than any mass shooter ever could have got to end. The far-reaching and egoistic brinksmanship needs to be reigned in once and for all.

Cut off their funding, start investigating their (unconstitutional) outside sources of funding, start sending people to jail. And that's not just the CIA, that's all of them that are operating as a law unto themselves.

Why it's creepy: Samuel Chew was a respected man, a Chief Justice in the state back in the Colonial days. Still, even in Colonial America, bullies latched onto his name, constantly proclaiming "ah, Chew" as if sneezing. He apparently hated it so much that his spirit still stalks those who mock him, showing up in his robes and powdered wig to scare the ever-loving crap out of people who can't resist the easy joke at the expense of a centuries-dead legislator.
Where it came from: Chew was very much a real man, serving as Chief Justice of the Three Lower Counties until he died in 1743. Things got so unsettling that people eventually held a "funeral" for the ghost in Dover's Green, laying his spirit to rest in an ornate grave. He seemed to be placated, though he's still known to mess with smartasses who sneeze at the mention of his name. -- AK

Delaware sucks. Let's sell it to Canada or Puerto Rico or some other useless hellhole.

I'm now seeing reports that Paddock transferred a significant amount of money to "someone" in the Phillippines before the attack.

Well gosh golly gee willikers, I wonder if there's any chance that "someone" could possibly be his girlfriend/likely accomplice given that she oh-so-conveniently just happened to skedaddle off to the Philippines ahead of time!

The woman whose address he shared and whose casino credits card he used sure seemed to look Filipino. Could still just be chance if she's been gone for months and that's when he started his plan. Wouldn't be unusual for a millionaire to send his girlfriend spending money.
