Las Vegas Shooting Updates, Singer Tom Petty Dead (UPDATED): P.M. Links

The latest information on the Las Vegas mass shooting:
- At least 58 people have been killed and more than 500 injured when a gunman identified as Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire on a country music concert from a hotel room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas. Police say he then killed himself before authorities could bust into his room.
- Some of the victims of the shooting have been identified and a GoFundMe page has been started to help families.
- Members of Paddock's family say they have no idea why he did this. His brother said he was gambling tens of thousands of dollars on video poker on a regular basis.
- The Islamic State is attempting to claim responsibility for the shooting and says Paddock had converted to Islam before the incident, but officials say so far they don't see any ties to international terror.
- Investigators tell the Wall Street Journal Paddock had between 18 and 20 guns, some of which were fully automatic, in his hotel room.
- Hillary Clinton says we all must "put politics aside" in the wake of the shooting, and then immediately in the very same tweet politicizes it by blaming the National Rifle Association and warning about gun silencers.
- And of course, incidences of mass violence always bring out the hoaxes.
In news unconnected to the Las Vegas shooting:
- Rocker Tom Petty is dead at age 66. He was rushed the hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest Sunday. (UPDATE: TMZ says Petty is actually still clinging to life and police reports that he had died are currently inaccurate.)

Quite the accountant.
Hello.
Come on Petty. Pull through.
Hillary can go fuck herself.
RIP to Vegas victims.
Warning: it's nothing but petty puns below.
Rocker Tom Petty is dead at age 66.
Only a crass opportunist would make a "won't back down" comment right now. RIP.
What happened to his heart??
It don't come around here no more.
"Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" is all I know about Tom Petty.
Well, that and the cause of his death.
Yer so bad.
Sadly, he won't come around here no more.
Don't do him like that.......
Yer so bad.
RIP TOM.
Damnit, how did I not see this.
Well, there's no backing down from the gates of hell at this point.
Heart broken?
He had his Last Dance With Mary Jane.
Doing the Wilbury Twist?
3 Traveling Wilburys down. 2 to go.
LEAVE JEFF LYNNE ALONE.
Who was the most musically gifted in that group? Could be Lynne, maybe Harrison or Orbison. Sorry, but it's not Petty or Dylan.
Orbison or gtfo.
Depends on what you mean by that. Petty had the most hits, so I vote for him.
Madonna has even more hits, therefore...
Madonna wasn't in the Travelling Wilburys. Unfortunately for everyone.
But she's clearly more musically gifted than all of them.
At self promotion maybe, nothing else...
At self promotion maybe, nothing else...
I don't think that's really fair to Madonna, although not knowing how much she actually contributed to the songwriting during her heyday, I could be wrong. Her singing voice was never all that good, but her influence on singers like Lady GaGa is undeniable, and for a while there, she had some monster hits that are still major earworms.
Petty is a genius.
That's kind of a broad question. Lynne's compositions were arguably the most creative, Orbison had the best voice, Dylan had the track record on writing influential lyrics, while Petty had a strong track record of iconic hits from the 70s all the way into the mid-90s. I'd actually put Harrison as the least talented overall of the five, a guy who was obviously skilled but was clearly milking his time in the Beatles for hits well into the late 80s when Boomer nostalgia was at its peak.
TOM PETTY LIVES?
Thanks for the fake news, Shackfored.
I'd say he's learning to fly...
Rocker Tom Petty is dead at age 66. He was rushed the hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest Sunday.
Don't do me like that.
That sucks man, I was just the right age for cruising around listening to Damn The Torpedoes all summer long when that album came out, I really liked the guy. Some people said he sounded like Dylan (whom I can't stand) but there's a world of difference between whining and sneering and Petty sneered. "You got lucky, babe, when I found you" is classic Petty. That ain't no whining.
Some people said he sounded like Dylan
Some people say lots of stupid shit that's wrong.
I think some of that comes from SNL characterizations of them. I remember they did a parody of LiveAid or one of the other "We are the World" type of ensembles that passed as virtue-signaling for singers back then, and they always had the Petty/Dylan impersonators sing back to back to hammer home the joke.
I'd say he sounded more like he was trying to sound like Roger McGuinn trying to sound like Dylan.
Ironically, I did used to live in a two room apartment.
Hillary Clinton says we all must "put politics aside" in the wake of the shooting, and then immediately in the very same tweet politicizes it by blaming the National Rifle Association and warning about gun silencers.
Silencers? I'm with her.
I think this is an example of why Hillary lost. When she mentions current legislation she is not putting politics aside. She's making it front and center. Her "put politics aside" is a lie.
Not like that's a dealbreaker. Look at Obama.
Every word she says is a lie, including "and" and "the".
[Ah, the old insults are the best.]
If someone could convince her to shut the fuck up, that would be great.
Investigators tell the Wall Street Journal Paddock had between 18 and 20 guns, some of which were fully automatic, in his hotel room.
So he had 19 guns in there?
Close. 18.7.
That was actually two different super soakers, which under federal law are 35% of a gun.
Wait, do black rifles count as 3/5?
It was hard to tell which were his and which were their plants.
I've never understood that type of numbering there is a real number and it takes less news time to give the real number vs the four words to say between 18 to 20 guns just say 19 guns. they do this for all sorts of things and its confoundingly stupid
Nobody brings that many guns with them anywhere unless they're planning to take out a shitload of people. Like at a major concert, for example.
Says you, pussy. I carry 30+ in my car just because I have a constitutional right.

Reverkin? Like a merkin bald wig.
I drive a Subaru Leone, thank you very much.
I want to see the video of how get got the guns to the room.
get got
I'm going for a new southern phrase I guess.
News reports indicate that he made "many" trips over the preceding days "in and out of the hotel." So, presumably, he took them in in small, easily concealable numbers.

Breakdown.

Are they doing the Mormon thing now of converting folks for them without permission?
It's Becoming Frightfully Easy to Make Untraceable Guns at Home
What it always comes down to is that these autoritarian think trained government agents are the only people that should be allowed access to guns.
Maybe making police accountability a race issue rather than a power issue is the authoritarian's way of dealing with the cognitive dissonance.
The government is the only moral authority I trust or need.
Can you imagine a 3D printer on a ship in international waters?
How about in outer space?
That's just the plot of Jason X.
Save this story for Halloween. Too scary!
I've debated gun control with a variety of people. They usually propose all of the typical gun control policies first. I counter by describing how universal background checks are unenforceable, how concealed carry laws don't lead to increases in shootings, how waiting periods don't have any scientifically demonstrated effect on domestic violence or suicide rates, how storage laws won't stop stupid people from accidental shootings, how efforts to register guns are usually ignored by the public, how assault weapons bans are ineffective and easily thwarted, etc. Unable to refute this, they always respond by suggesting full confiscation and prohibition is the only effective policy. It never fails.
You know who else suggested full confiscation and prohibition of firearms?
Michael Bloomberg?
Your mom?
No, definitely not.
Lt. Gorman?
"If there are no guns, there will be no shootings!"
""they always respond by suggesting full confiscation and prohibition is the only effective policy""
Let me guess, this comes after they said no one was coming after your guns at the top of the conversation.
I just say, "so only the police should have guns?" And then after they pause, I called them a statist cunts and kick their shins.
The Crusty I know would never violate NAP like that.
If you knew me you would know I have no principles.
The N.A.P? More like the B-O-R-I-N-G, am I right?
I usually respond by suggesting that if they want the government to enforce strict prohibition against illicit items, then they have to live with the consequences.
Of course, it won't be educated, middle-class, white-guys like me who get penalized by these laws. The hammer will fall hardest on the poor and minorities. The black guys who gets pulled over for running a red light and the police find an unregistered pistol in his car? Yeah, now he's a felon with a draconian prison sentence. The Latino guy who doesn't speak English and keeps an old shotgun in the corner of his room because he lives in a bad area? Yeah, when he gets evicted for not paying rent he'll also get arrested now. You think the American carceral state is bad now? Just wait until we prohibit some of the most commonly owned items in the country. The War on Drugs worked so well, I think what we really need is a War on Guns.
Prohibitionists don't know how to square their belief in prohibition with the probable effects of such a policy. Usually they clam up and stop arguing with me.
Prohibitionists usually double down when you point out that prohibitionn isn't working.
You know what else is frightfully easy to make at home? Babies. People make those little monsters all the damn time without any supervision or permission from the government, no training, no certification, no oversight for that kind of stuff all the time. It's long past time we keep baby-making out of the hands of amateurs and put it in the hands of the professionals I say.
Oh, it's just a matter of time.
Are you talking common-sense baby control?
100% of shooting deaths are committed by babies or former babies.
What about that one time a monkey got a gun?
That monkey was also a former-baby!
It will be a brave new world.
Yeah, and they don't have to pledge allegiance to the state until they're like 5 years old.
...opened fire on a country music concert from a hotel room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas.
Well, there's no way around it. The Mandalay is going to have to be razed now.
Why? Is everyone going to want to stay in that guy's room?
I already booked my trip on Expedia.com
The room will be permanently shut down and walled off, no doubt. Because evil spirits.

"Easy"?
It's a helluva lot more easy to buy a .38 revolver in a back alley of Chi-Town for 50 bucks than it is to spend the thousands to 3D print a 1911
Fact: it literally costs more money to buy a new book than it does to buy a new gun.
Gun runners from Indiana would switch to running books but we're talking the South Side of Chicago, where book-running will get you killed.
No market for Readin' on the South Side ...
Unless it's a Hillary Clinton biography.
Doesn't everyone already have a 3D printer to make Bootleg Precious Moments figures to sell out of their van?
... down by the river?
Didn't know there was such a market for Precious figures. Seems like they would take a lot of ink.
People who think they can control guns are as they always have been, pissing in the wind.
If you look at their political views in aggregate, it becomes obvious that they'd prefer to control people.

People upset that Obamacare didn't work voted for the other party? Why? How? That can't be.
The good news is that most of them will have died before 2020 and thus won't vote Republican again. (They may vote Democrat though)
Uh, so the people who weren't well served by eight years of the landmark governmental health legislation of the Democratic party voted against the Democrats? STOP THE PRESSES!!!

"(UPDATE: TMZ says Petty is actually still clinging to life and police reports that he had died are currently inaccurate.)"
Come on, Tom, get lucky!
currently inaccurate
I like it!
You can say that of any false report of someone's death.
"The fact that I will die in forty-nine days is currently inaccurate."
That's true of all of us one day. Wouldn't it be amazing if you could be aware of that fact?
He won't back down!
Hey medical professionals: make it better!
Now look at what you made me do ...
Come on, Tom, get lucky!
The waaaiting...
By the way,
"police reports that he had died are currently inaccurate"
TMZ says the inaccuracy is attributing such a report to the LAPD - that is, the LAPD didn't say it according to TMZ.
The LAPD twitter account says:
"The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertantly provided to some media sources"
"However, the LAPD has no investigative role in this matter. We apologize for any inconvenience in this reporting."
He was "clinging to life", if you call being hooked up to a machine living. They shut off the machines and he's gone.
I obviously don't know the details of his condition. If we believe TMZ, a chaplain was called in - it doesn't mention the denomination.

Defiant fan gives Las Vegas shooter the finger.
Members of Paddock's family say they have no idea why he did this. His brother said he was gambling tens of thousands of dollars on video poker on a regular basis.
Perhaps *that* might give you an idea?
Brother also says he was a multi-millionaire real estate investor.
http://twitchy.com/samj-3930/2.....-investor/
I am starting the think the brother is full of shit.
Unknown to anyone else, he was a multi-millionaire real estate investor?
If you can't trust a guy whose close family member just committed a mass-murder-suicide to be reasonable and informative, who can you trust?
Melissa McCarthy?
And it is not like the family has any psychological need to say there were no signs of him doing this or anything. Maybe they might feel guilty about not noticing their brother was about to go nuts and murder people and thus have some confirmation bias going on with the whole "we have no idea why he did this routine. Just a thought.
it's always either..."we don't know why he did it" or "he was just turning his life around"
Just like Walter White.
Now, look at what you made me do ...
A while ago I watched a video showing that gun silencers don't make guns shoot "psshhht" like they do in movies. In fact, there's no real discernible difference. Why is that an issue again?
It's still loud, but there's a big difference in loudness.
Suppressors on rifles make them as loud as normal pistols.
Suppressors on normal pistols make them as loud as small pistols.
Suppressors on small pistols make them as loud as pellet guns.
Only the last are quiet enough to go unheard in most crowded potential mass shooting targets, and the weakness of the round and/or requirement for frequent reloading to compensate for it balances out whatever "delayed police response" that might be gotten for it.
To say nothing of the fact that suppressors can be manufactured quickly and easily out of generic metal parts. Small caliber suppressors (again, the only useful ones) can actually be 3D printed out of plastic on 500$ commercial models; I saw one tested that lasted 100 rounds with no damage (it was overbuilt).
Oil filter suppressors.
Not that I would ever advocate such a thing ...
Won't last very long. Be a man, make a can.
The device that you thread onto the barrel and onto the oil filter is actually a legit product. With of course the $200 stamp and 6 months bureaucratic wait time.
Of course if you tried to use it on anything more substantial than a small caliber rimfire it would probably not be all that effective.
No; pistols are often just as loud or louder than rifles. Typical gunshots are between 150-170 dB, depending on variables such as barrel length (longer is quieter), cartridge, type of gunpowder, etc. Also factored in is the speed of the bullet; a supersonic bullet creates a sonic boom, while subsonic bullets do not. Magnum pistols are often much, much louder than rifles, even though the rifles are more powerful. For instance, .357 magnum out of a S&W Model 586 will have a report of about 169 dB, while .30-06 out of a 22" barrel will be between 160 and 163 dB.
http://www.caohc.org/UserFiles/file/Shot of Prevention extra handout.pdf
A standard suppressor on most firearms will reduce the noise by about 20-30 dB, depending how good they are made. In other words, it reduces it from being immediately damaging to your ears to something about as loud as a jackhammer.
A Gun can be made to be almost Hollywood quiet, but it requires a much larger suppressor than is normal or a suppressor that is integral to the barrel and subsonic ammunition. Subsonic ammunition means the guns will be less powerful ( K.E. = 1/2 m v^2), and will have less useful range, because their ballistic trajectories will be rather rainbow-shaped. TANSTAAFL and all of that.
I will grant you that I'd forgotten about .300 BLK, 9x39 and such like. Still, I never noticed my dad's .44 as being louder than our WWII bolt-actions.
I can however personally attest that a Mosin-Nagant carbine is... *significantly* louder than full-length rifles of similar caliber. So I guess a pistol has a short enough barrel to compensate for its lower powder charge, noise-wise?
Pretty much. Also, with revolvers you have the cylinder gap to take into account, which also doesn't help.
I'm guessing that the S&W 586 that produced the 169 dB measurement was either ported or had a snub-nosed barrel. A big .44 magnum with a 6 or 8 inch barrel likely wouldn't produce quite as much noise.
So all we have to do is legally require all guns to be 30-06 or higher caliber with 6-inch or shorter barrels, and Hillary & Co. will be satisfied.
Fine by me. Sounds like fun.
Yeah, from what I've heard (npi) the absolute highest quality suppressors reduce the sound by 30 decibels or so. So it's like handing everyone around you a good pair of earplugs before you shoot. Thus going from "sound that ruptures your eardrums and breaks bones in your ear" to merely "loudest sound you will ever hear in your life without going deaf".
That's...overstating things by quite a bit. You'd have to have the muzzle right next to your ear when the gun went off to get that level of damage.
Why would you shoot any other way?
WHAT? YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO SPEAK UP.
Depending on the calibre you may still have to wear hearing protection. There is a major difference in the amount of noise produced however. the only time you can really get it down to how Hollywood portrays silencers, is very small calibre weapons with subsonic rounds.
the only time you can really get it down to how Hollywood portrays silencers, is very small calibre weapons with subsonic rounds.
Even then, Hollywood will frequently demonstrate a complete lack of understanding by demonstrating that hand-cycling the action without any discharge produces a 'Cha-chink' noise but somehow, when being cycled by explosive discharge, the cycling quiets down.
Racking a shotgun can be heard throughout pretty much any building but (admittedly some of this is the limitations of storytelling or for effect) silencers somehow limit the mechanical noises of the gun itself.
Why is it an issue today? Would it have mattered in apprehending the shooter? Didn't the broken hotel windows give away his position?
This is spurned by a comment from H-to-the-CLInt, where she said people wouldn't have been able to respond to the guns and run if a silencers had been legal.
As if they could hear the fucking gunshots from 200+ yards away over the crowd and traffic. Much less need to, compared to the significantly more arresting sensory input provided by "people dropping and dying everywhere".
Are you questioning Hillary's firearms expertise?
Nyet, Tovarisch Kommissar!
Mass murders and assault rifles are statistically negligible. Over half of our murders are with illegally obtained handguns.
Can we have a presidential stand-in for Trump the next time some nut decides to shoot up a concert or school. He's completely awful for these types of things and is only really good at talking about his brand and trolling Hillary Clinton. He should stick to what he's good at.
Reports of Tom Petty's death are slightly exaggerated.
