I think it's a bit different than that. The Rs can't raise the debt ceiling themselves because there is a big chunk of conservatives who won't vote for it unless they get a bunch of spending cuts, and the Ds won't go for the spending cuts. So the Rs need some Ds to come along. And to do that, they need to give the Ds something. If the Rs get an 18 month debt limit extension, they only need to give the Ds something once, and they can probably minimize how big that thing is now with the whole Harvey/Irma emergency. But with a 3 month extension, they have to give the Ds something at least 2 times. And in December, they won't have the Harvey/Irma emergency, so that something is likely to be DACA, or spending increases, or no border wall.

The problem is that the legislative branch, dominated by Republicans for quite a while, has refused to do much of anything regarding the millions of people who live and are building their lives in America without any legal right to be here. After venting publicly about Obama, and privately about Trump, Republican lawmakers should blame themselves for the toxic politics of ending DACA. This mess is partly their own making. Famously, J. Paul Getty said that if you owe the bank one hundred dollars, that's your problem; if you owe the bank $100 million, that's the bank's problem. A similar dynamic is at work with immigration. If you've been in the country for a few months or years without legal status, that's your problem. If you've been in the country for two or three decades without legal status, that's the government's problem.

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach wants the families of Dreamers to be deported as well.

"They came in presumably with a parent or parents, and so the correct policy is for us to enforce federal law and deport the whole family to the home country," Kobach told CNN of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients.

Our immigration system exists in its current form to supply the beauracracy with taxpayer dollars.
