The interesting thing is that there was no such thing as an Australian citizen until Australian citizenship was created by the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 which came into force on 26 January 1949.

When Australia's Constitution was written, it only recognized British subjects, thus pretty much anyone from Britain or any any British colony or dominion (Canada, New Zealand etc*) could enter and establish residence, vote and run for office. All such people who resided there when the Act came into force became citizens automatically.

*Non-whites were excluded hence most people from British Africa and India were not welcome.
