Professor Bret Weinstein Files $3.8 Million Claim Against Evergreen State College

Weinstein was berated by student demonstrators and forced to leave campus last May over an innocuous email he wrote to a student group.

The Evergreen State College

Among the many student-led inquisitions that have swept America's college campuses recently, this one from Evergreen State College stands out as especially egregious and ridiculous. The standard elements of these now-typical incidents were all there: outrage over microaggressions, demands for safe spaces, and some students behaving like cartoonish caricatures of social justice activists.

Now Bret Weinstein, the professor at the center of this episode, is filing a $3.8 million tort claim against the school on behalf his wife and himself, saying in part that The Evergreen State College (TESC) "consistently has failed to set and enforce necessary boundaries in the workplace on campus, selectively has chosen not to enforce its student Code of Conduct, and sent the unmistakable message that the school will tolerate (and even endorse) egregious violations (and even crimes) purportedly to advance racial social goals, diminishing the collegiate experience for all, and fostering a racially hostile and retaliatory work environment for faculty and staff."

If that sounds overblown or exaggerated, it's worth remembering that the local police chief told Weinstein to leave campus because it was not safe for him to remain there. The video evidence of the student mob speaks for itself.

I first covered Evergreen for Reason back in early June as the school was still reeling from student protests. Nearly two months later, the school's graduation came and went (albeit off-campus for safety reasons) and the administration is grappling with how to move forward and salvage the school's reputation.

The shift in tone from the school's leaders over the course of these two months has been remarkable. Evergereen State President George Bridges initially said that he was "grateful to the courageous students who voiced their concerns." (If by "voiced their concerns" he meant "angrily shouted and took over the school," then that statement might be appropriate). Now Bridges says he is "immensely disappointed" with the student demonstrators and that some may face disciplinary action.

This complete reversal almost certainly stems from the massive backlash the school received over its handling of the protests. A Washington state lawmaker proposed defunding the school, and the university's Board of Trustees condemned the behavior of the student mob.

It remains to be seen what the long-term effects of the protests or Weinstein's impending lawsuit will have on Evergreen, but the future does not look bright. Even if Weinstein doesn't get the money he's asking for, the school will still endure the cost of all the bad PR. The University of Missouri experienced massive protests in 2015 that ended in the resignation of both the campus chancellor and the university system president over accusations of administrative indifference to racism on campus. Since then, freshman enrollment has fallen by 35 percent and budget cuts have resulted in the elimination of around 400 positions.

As I said before in my original article, the Evergreen students who wanted nothing to do with this nonsense in the first place are the ones who truly suffer. For their sake, let's hope the administration can get its act together before the school's reputation as a "Social Justice Warrior PC Indoctrination Compound" is complete.

  1. The Evergreen State College (TESC) “consistently has failed to set and enforce necessary boundaries in the workplace on campus, ….”

    HATE SPEECH!

    1. Let’s be clear that any “speech” involved here is merely incidental; the crucial factor is the serious offense given to certain fundamental rules which everybody knows cannot be violated with impunity. The same is true for other, related infringements which all of us must work together to suppress, stamp out, and thoroughly eradicate from our college campuses. Surely no one here would dare to defend the “First Amendment dissent” of a single, isolated judge in America’s leading criminal “satire” case? See the documentation at:

      https://raphaelgolbtrial.wordpress.com/

  2. “As I said before in my original article, the Evergreen students who wanted nothing to do with this nonsense in the first place”

You don’t attend a University like Evergreen if you want nothing to do with nonsense.

    1. I thought you attended Evergreen because you applied too late for anywhere else.

      1. I they had serious entrance requirements including, a pulse, at least a room temperature IQ, an opposable thumb & forefinger (though I understand this requirement can be waived) to mention a few…

        1. I assume they measure room temperature in degrees Celsius.

          1. Kelvin

            1. Kelvin was suspended over a Title IX rumor.

              1. They decided on renaming it genderless Kel, because science is the newest patriarchy that needs to die.

        2. I they had serious entrance requirements including, a pulse, at least a room temperature IQ, an opposable thumb & forefinger (though I understand this requirement can be waived) to mention a few…

You forgot the crucial “exact change” requirement to pay for tuition.

      2. I thought it was someplace you go if you’re too fucking stupid to get a real degree anywhere, but your parents still think it’s worth getting your ticket punched.

        -jcr

    2. There was that one guy with the “Limp Bizcut” graffiti. Which I guess is another kind of nonsense. But nonsense that I find amusing, which means it’s good.

      1. Limp Bizkit! Come on, Zeb.

  3. I think it would be great if he won his lawsuit and bought a Lamborghini (or some similar “Look at me” supercar) with the license plate: “THNX SJW” and did loud burnout/drive-bys around the campus whenever they were holding their Sweat-Lodge Struggle-Sessions.

    1. Or, at the very least, bought a copy the new Burnout and named his Steam account Thx SJWs.

    2. I always liked the idea of putting up billboards.

    3. If I recall, he was one of the professors endorsing/promoting SJW before it came back to bite him in the toucas. He doesn’t deserve a Le Mans.

      1. ^This.

The best result would be for Weinstein to totally win the lawsuit, then find out that, since no parents are sending students to TESC any more, they don’t have any money to pay the judgement.

        Real life is a bitch.

    4. Do they even have collegiate wrestling?

      1. Only under the covers.

  4. There have been suggestions that there will be a college bubble burst much like there was a housing bubble, due to loans guaranteed by the government. As a result, prices have skyrocketed. It think Mizzou and Evergreen is the start of this bubble bursting.

    1. There have been suggestions that there will be a college bubble burst much like there was a housing bubble, due to loans guaranteed by the government.

IMO, a ‘bubble burst’ not in the cards. Attendance and tuition were slowing (arguably) before the current crop of SJW-fests. Certainly, there are plenty of forces striving to put traditional 4-yr.-degrees and institutions in their place, but unfortunately, a clearly popped bubble with which to smack SJWs in the head with seems unlikely.

Turns out, when Libertarian/GOPer deride University admins salaries and Democrats shriek about all the student debt and the various ways that they’re going to handle it, it generates some uncertainty in the marketplace.

This is really where the progressive university claque can be subverted and ultimately destroyed, IMO.

There’s still a great deal of belief in the middle class that a college degree is the only means of securing a stable future for yourself. But as college tuition continues to escalate, that belief is going to be eroded as college students accumulate increasing levels of debt for an increasingly lower rate of immediate return. It’s one thing to pay about $200-400 a month for $10K-25K of debt; it’s another to try and make that note when you owe $1000 a month or more.

Most of the problem isn’t even the dessicated Boomer professors, it’s their virtue-signaling-addicted Gen-X intellectual progeny that now make up most of the current professoriate and enable this behavior to take place. Once normies begin to view the violent, reactionary SJW horde as the true face of America’s universities, they’ll do the calculation and refuse to support such institutions with their money, which will effectively cripple these places’ ability to sustain themselves.

        1. There’s still a great deal of belief in the middle class that a college degree is the only means of securing a stable future for yourself.

After SCOTUS effectively barred aptitude tests to get jobs, employers didn’t have much to work with.

        2. Yeah, I consider Mizzou to be a bit exceptional in this regard. Harvard, Berkeley, Evergreen… we aren’t talking about the traditional middle-class and Harvard grads being on either side being ashamed for life or even a decade from now over the ‘Halloween Costume Incident’ or Anti-Trump/Milo riots..

Mizzou, OTOH; white people will avoid it to avoid the racist label, black people will avoid it for it’s racist reputation, and the decades-old endowments are generally less willing to overlook such kerfuffles. I don’t see a catastrophic collapse/death. Certainly a diminishing, but the socialism/SJW mentality won’t go away any more than the centralized learning and certification does.

        3. There’s still a great deal of belief in the middle class that a college degree is the only means of securing a stable future for yourself.

          Unfortunately, we’re getting there.

The theory was that getting a college education made you more competitive for higher-income jobs.

This led to the theory that if everyone got a college education, everyone could get a higher-income job. Unfortunately, that doesn’t work without increasing the supply of higher-income jobs.

The “unexpected” result, a glut of college graduates, means employers now require college degrees for middle and lower-income jobs.

        4. Perhaps to state the obvious, this is a classic case of confusing correlation with causation. Once upon a time, a small percentage of adults held college degrees. And most of them fared better economically than the average schlub. But, as is now forgotten or politely ignored, most of them were either much smarter than average, or had much better family connections and status. So no surprise they did better in life.

The push for everyone to “go to college” is an unholy alliance between the misguided do-gooders and the higher ed-industrial complex. And it already is not ending well.

      2. I wouldn’t be so sure about that with States like New York guaranteeing a college education for everyone on the public dollar with no requirement to repay it as long as you live in the state for ‘X’ period of time afterwards and maintain a fairly low GPA requirement.

If anything, they are doubling down on fucking the cost curve. We’ll see how those retarded little experiments work out though.

    2. In this case more like a dope/soap bubble

  5. the school will still endure the cost of all the bad PR.

Bad publicity is still publicity; and it’ll attract as many as it repels.

    1. A bad restaurant review is still a restaurant review and will attract as many is it repels. Yep, that works.

    2. Repel normal people, attract SJW drama queens. That’s doubly bad.

      1. No. Actually having them concentrated allows for the remote possibility of some college somewhere, re-instituting logic and reason.

      2. Dude, you can’t say “queen”.

      3. Except you can’t say ‘queens’ – – – – –

    3. I doubt that. Look at Mizzou.

Even at an SJW asylum like Evergreen, the hardcore nutjobs are a minority.

      -jcr

  6. As much as I should be sympathetic, I’m really not. I’m sick of these far left types getting all surprised when the SJW spawn they’ve created turns on them. Reminds me of the communists in the gulags who still thought “oh this is a giant mistake! If only Stalin knew about this”. See, everyone else in the were guilty, except for them.

    1. He said in the Vice video that he wanted to have a dialectic with the protestors. That’s not necessarily a reference to Marx, but a far lefty throwing that word around is suspect, especially since he was already at this clown college for years in the first place

      1. a far lefty throwing that word around is suspect

sure the term has marxian overtones, but ffs its still just him saying that the point of argument is to eventually get to some synthesis of ideas and go from there – not just yell at each other like some endless “tastes great!”vs.”less filling”

he’s actually challenging them to work out their ideas together with him. whether you think “dialectic” inherently results in more left-wing nuttery, or whether you pretend its socratic dialogue doesn’t really matter, he’s still appealing to the liberal idea that people should be free to disagree in order to get to some unknown third place.

        1. In order to have a “dialectic” he first has to teach SJWs that the process includes some part of them listening while he states his side. That’s going to be difficult with the “listening to anything but my voice is an aggression” folks.

          1. True enough. And the sad fact is that the SJWs are really just level-one thinkers. Challenge them to take their “thinking” beyond the first kneejerk and watch the tantrums explode

            1. Ready for a giant time-out?

  7. nice if he wins and all but it’s not like the idiot punk students will learn a lesson…damages won’t be paid by them

    1. Who else is going to pay for it? Where does the college get its money?

      1. Cancel that. I was sure Evergreen was private, but I googled it and it is public. The horror.

        1. even if private it’s gotta be mostly the ‘rents paying the kids’ tuition…

          1. No, it doesn’t. Its just as likely the kids took out student loans.

      2. From federal loans which are forgiven.

      3. Seriously? None of you think the establishment has insurance?

    2. Even if these punks were expelled, its not like they would care-it would just boost their SJW cred and maybe help them get a transfer to a more prestigious SJW school like Hampshire or Brown. Its not like they have to worry about it affecting their career goals.

      1. I disagree. It wouldn’t ‘boost’ any cred. They’d find themselves out of school and working at a convenience store. SJW cred doesn’t work in the real world unless you play in a band or pretend to be someone on TV. Sometimes it works in politics, sometimes not.

        1. It depends on how they spin it and who their parents are. If they are some rich trustifarian brat-mommy and daddy will make sure they get to carry on their antics someplace else, along with a lawsuit against Evergreen State for victimizing their precious little ones. They can then look forward to a long career in academia, government employment, or a diversity officer in the private sector.

  8. students behaving like cartoonish caricatures of social justice activists.

SJW’s have been beyond parody for some time now.

  9. Evergereen State President George Bridges initially said that he was “grateful to the courageous students who voiced their concerns.”

He should be thrilled by the lawsuit then.

    1. Bridges is an idiot and academic cuckold.

  10. Can one write an innocuous email to a student group? Just curious before I hit ‘send’.

    1. Nope. There will be someone in the group triggered by whatever you send.
If you offer free pizza, the gluten police will get you.

      1. If you offer free pizza from a panel truck, the Backpage police will get you.

  11. Since then, freshman enrollment has fallen by 35 percent and budget cuts have resulted in the elimination of around 400 positions.

That’s interesting. I wonder how to interpret that? Is that a good sign? That most college students find this shit abhorrent and when they see it running in high gear at a school, they strike that shit off their list?

    1. Or the parents see it and say “Fuck no I’m not paying 65grand for you to come back an even bigger idiot piece of shit than you are now”.

      1. Ultra progressive colleges are a luxury good for affluent white liberals. Having an idiot SJW child is not an embarrassment to them, but a status symbol. It signals to others that you can afford to throw your money away. God Bless Obama!

    2. If I remember the SJW Missouri analysis, the drop in enrollment is due to enlightened students not wanting to attend a college that has been exposed as a hotbed of racist, white supremacists. Ha! I shit you not.

      1. That poop swastika really did its job huh?

    3. Look at it like this, most of the students will realize that if they go to that school getting laid is far more dangerous and far less likely.

You don’t pick a school with a high density of ugly lesbians if your a heterodude, for instance. It’s just common sense. All the news stories and photo’s regarding Evergreen showed both the male and female students that there was no real hope of finding sexual nirvana at that school. Unless, of course, you’re into short green haired chicks that look like guys and who weigh only slightly less than a neutron star. We’re talking very niche interests.

While there are always those few who choose a school based on it’s actual ‘adult’ criteria, there are far more who choose it based on…more ephemeral standards. And why not, it’s not like they’re paying for it.

  12. The best and quickest fix is to pull accreditation from all the campus cops that report to the college administration instead of legitimate governments. That way when the protests turn into riots, the real cops go in and arrest the criminals, instead of the fake cops telling law abiding citizens to leave ‘for their own safety’.

    1. When the fake cops pull that crap, it’s time for a company of MPs from the nearest NG unit.

      1. Yeah, that always turns out well.

      2. NG will never be involved on a college campus until everyone forgets Kent State.

The Sun should last that long.

  13. This proves that he was merely a fellow traveler and not a true believer, trying to cash in against the struggle.

  14. “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

    1. “Hello. My name is Sanity Decency. You killed free speech. Prepare to retreat to your safe space!”

    2. You’re aware that the SJW brigade recently went after him, too, right?

      http://variety.com/2017/legit/…..202510044/

  15. Frankly, Weinstein was just reaping what he sowed. You don’t chum the water and then whine when the sharks bite you. SJWism wasn’t the result of space aliens, it was created, nurtured, and encouraged by professors like Weinstein. Not him personally, alone, all by himself, but as a lefty prof at Evergreen, he was definitely an active participant in that culture.

You can’t be for the liberal ideal of free inquiry and also be for the progressive goal of viciously suppressing ideas.

    1. Actually, Weinstein appears to be a lefty liberal and not a lefty progressive, very much supportive of free inquiry.

      1. Yet he works at Evergreen…

  16. Where is the poor taxpayer in this whole story?

    1. Are there poor taxpayers?

      1. Plenty of poorish taxpayers, but in Oregon there is no sales tax, so those without property or labor income are not having to support the salaries and office space of state functionaries like this Weinstein guy.

But next time I’ll use the term ‘abused taxpayers’.

        1. Oregon?

        2. It’s in Olympia Washington

        3. How about a tax on flannel shirts and hoodies?

      2. Nope. They pay no income tax.

    2. The taxpayers were sold the following “Bill of Goods”:

Higher education will broaden our minds, teach us useful skills, teach us how to think critically, and how to civilly converse among diverse people, batting ideas around critically but civilly.

Instead, what we have now, is students having self-righteous hissy fits, until the “instructors” (even liberal ones) recite the exact doctrines as espoused by these young Maoists… Or at least, the Maoists who yell and scream most loudly.

So in answer to your question, the taxpayer is being raked over the coals, and then butt-fucked on top of the wood pile, out behind the woodshed.

  17. The Maoism seen on college campuses worries me a lot more than the trolly internet neo-nazis in sectors of the alt-right.

    1. Maybe they should deal with radical Maoist students the way Mao himself did: Send the Army, a rifle butt to the face and 20 years of hard labor.

  18. For their sake, let’s hope the administration can get its act together before the school’s reputation as a “Social Justice Warrior PC Indoctrination Compound” is complete.

    Too late.

    1. Exactly.

Thank the baby jebus that I got my degree in the 70s.

Maybe they’ll go the way of Antioch College in Ohio, which was killed off by Antioch University in 2008 and had to be revived as a separate institution by its alums, restarting in 2011.

  19. I would never hire an Evergreen grad.

    1. That would include Matt Groening?

  20. Now Bridges says he is “immensely disappointed”? with the student demonstrators and that some may face disciplinary action.

Throwing the book at ’em, eh?

Not sure what would generate the possibility that they WOULDN’T face disciplinary action. They seem to have earned it.

  21. If I remember the SJW Missouri analysis, the drop in enrollment is due to enlightened students not wanting to attend a college that has been exposed as a hotbed of racist, white supremacists. Ha! I shit you not.

  23. Had a friend graduate from TESC with a degree in “post-colonial French culture”. he hung out in Leon and partied with French hip hop artists in the 90’s. make of that what you will, seems like a good deal to me! This place used to be an interesting study in alternative approaches to education that are not the typical pedagogical methods, but it seems to have devolved into a Marxist training camp.

  27. Look at some of the interviews Bret Weinstein has had. It’s pretty easy to see that he was perfectly fine with the bear trap he and the rest of the gang at Evergreen had fashioned, well, until he accidentally stepped on it himself and found it bit off liberal legs just as neatly as conservative ones. He is a disgusting little hypocrite.

  28. The Police Chief who’d only been there 6 months resigned. She’d previously argued with the administration over not having access to rifles for active shooter situations which other colleges do and given that her swearing in ceremony was disrupted by the same bunch of air-wasters, she clearly saw the writing on the wall and decided to get out before things got bad.
