Trump Encourages Police to Brutalize Suspects
Law enforcement audience applauds Trump's suggestion that they rough up suspects.

President Trump encouraged police to rough up arrested suspects in a speech in Long Island, New York, Friday afternoon, prompting cheers and applause from the audience of cops.
"When you see these towns, and when you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon, you just see them thrown in, rough," Trump said. "And I said, 'Please don't be too nice.'"
"Like when you guys put somebody in the car and you're protecting their head," Trump continued. "You know, the way you put their hand over, like, don't hit their head, and they've just killed somebody. Don't hit their head. I said, 'You can take the hand away, OK?'"

This usually doesn't bear clarification, but since the president of the United States suggested otherwise during a nationally televised speech: It is illegal for law enforcement to beat or otherwise use excessive force on suspects, who are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
For example, in Suffolk County, New York, where Trump was speaking, a police chief was sentenced last year to four years in prison for orchestrating the cover-up of the beating of a handcuffed heroin addict who had stolen several items from the chief's SUV, including a bag full of sex toys and pornography.
The Huffington Post also reported that Trump said current laws "totally protect the criminal, not the officers."
"We're changing those laws," Trump said.

"People seem to be pretty mad about those tranny tweets. I'd better do something to distract them."
I thought he was there to talk about the Central American criminal gang that was reconstituted here in America by the refugees who were ostensibly fleeing it and are now amassing a body count in Long Island. Well, I guess that theme has gone down the memory hole.
Don't worry, if they turn up the cops will be sure to bonk them on the head and throw them in the wagon now.
Whew - problem solved!
Definitely avoid the theme of amassing a body count. Don't want to give the boys in blue any ideas!
Makes little difference to the argument/narrative, but I think it (MS13) is actually Los Angeles gang that spread to Central America and then to other North American cities.
I think you are wrong. I believe it started in El Salvador. I'ma Google
You are right and I am wrong. According to wiki:
"MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha; also known as simply MS or Mara) is an international criminal gang that originated in Los Angeles, California, US in the 1980s. "
LOL.
Libertarian snowflakes.
No, no, no! When I said "more government" I meant socialism, not strongman!
This ^^
The progressive Left just doesn't understand what government is. They hate Trump but fully support the power structure that enables Trump to do bad things. They may not have voted for Trump, but they did vote for and praise representatives who gave the presidency that power.
Without that power, Trump is a just a rude guy with a microphone.
He just trolling. You're not supposed to take his words seriously, lol.
I love the back and forth from Trump supporters between "He's a straight shooter who means what he says and tells it like it is!" and "He doesn't really mean that, he's just playing 4D chess!"
Funny how the cops get so bent out of shape anytime someone on the BLM side acts provacatively. Yet, here they are cheering on the lines that encourage them to treat suspects(not necessarily guilty) like crap and reinforce the bad rep the cops are building with their tactics getting exposed to the public via video footage.
So should civilians condemn all cops now becuase of these jokers not just laughing along politely but actively applauding such tactics while denying whenver they get caught that they condone brutality by their peers? Fucking pigs wonder why they get the rep they do. They lack the ability to deescalate situations. If all they did was cross the line occasionally with gang bangers , you think they would be under much criticism by even the BLM movement and other likeminded individuals?
And for every provocative utterance by a BLM supporter, I can bet cops say much worse in law enforcement related forums.

Yes.

I believe that a number of police forums have made it impossible for non-members to see the discussions because people were catching on to exactly that.
Yep, I used to copy and paste some of the rhetoric from Police 1 a few years back. It was never hard to find reprehensible vile quotes.
Seems like someone should be able to crack in there and let us know how *our* employees are discussing how they feel about us.
Well, is Dunphy still around? Totality of circs and all that?
Yet, here they are cheering on the lines that encourage them to treat suspects(not necessarily guilty) like crap and reinforce the bad rep the cops are building with their tactics getting exposed to the public via video footage.
I would *love* to see the video of this lead off every evening news tonight.
Probably won't happen, but it might at least open some eyes.
What an asshole.
He's going to repeal state laws against assault and battery?
Yep.. Just like he repealed Obamacare.
That was really more of a rhetorical question to point out what utter bullshit he spouts.
It almost makes me want to root for MS-13.
The worst part is the reaction he got from the cops, and the reaction he'd get from a lot of people on the right for saying this. A lot of conservatives would enthusiastically applaud this. I'm not saying all, but it's not a tiny fringe either. It's sad, as it seemed like a few years ago, support for criminal justice reform was increasing among conservatives, but that's pretty much collapsed completely since then.
A lot of conservatives would enthusiastically applaud this
That's because everyone who gets arrested is a murdering rapist.
Don't kid yourself. The left is in favor of this as well, not just the right.
Do you need to tell yourself that? Because it's a fucking lie. Not one liberal or Democrat in the country supports the criminal justice status quo or increasing its brutality.
You're right. The Chicago cops in the Daley era were well known for taking suspects to a secluded resort where they would be totally insulated from everyday life among the riff-raff.
And the cops in LA treated Rodney King so well that he literally had to ask them to stop.
It is interesting how blue states and cities have the most brutal cops
But anyway, yeah the left wouldn't cheer on this statement. I give them credit for that. Their language is still worrying and displays an affection for the worst parts of the status quo, i.e. the very system itself
"It disproportionately affects minorities" vs. "It's wrong for anyone to be shot by a cop"
"It's racism we need to fight" vs. "Cops have different moral and legal standards from the rest of us"
"They need better training and body cameras" vs. "Let's take a look at these unions"
"We just need to keep the bad eggs from getting through" vs. "This job will always attract bad eggs"
"It is interesting how blue states and cities have the most brutal cops"
Yeah, it is. Didn't even bring up Austin, Texas - the liberal jewel of one of the most red of states. They've got a long-term track record of police brutality against citizens. If you want to get pissed off some day and have a little spare time, google Hector Polanco just for one small example.
Both sides are terrible on criminal justice and control of the police. In the blue cities, I suspect that a lot of it is related to not wanting to cross the police unions because votes!!!!. Conservatives think that government is a clusterfuck as to everything it attempts to do, except of course for police and the justice system, where government is a finely tuned Swiss watch.
I imagine some of it is simply the fact that their policies create a permanent underclass. Those cities also have high crime rates. Surely there might be social unrest if you're in the projects because their zoning laws price you out of everywhere else, and are jobless because their minimum wage went up and your limited skills you acquired from your mediocre public school aren't worth anything close to $15/hour
Yep - under the leadership of that notorious bleeding-heart liberal Daryl Gates.
The mayor of LA at the time was the fire-breathing conservative Tom Bradley. Gates "served" at Mr. Bradley's pleasure.
Ah - I guess when I looked at the immediate commanding officer in charge of the day-to-day operations of the department, I was committing the folly of not looking hard enough for the closest-by Democrat to blame!
Thomas Bradley, obviously, campaigned on not doing anything about the LAPD's reputation for brutality!
Dude, Bradley was IN CHARGE OF THE ENTIRE FUCKING CITY.
I don't know what he campaigned on regarding the LAPD's reputation for brutality, but I know what he did about it - during his two fucking decades in charge. What he did was diddly squat.
You can play the "my team good other team bad" card all you want, but the simple fact is that both political sides in America are awful when it comes to control of the police.
Yes. Bradley ruled as a dictator. If there's one thing LA was known for in the 80s, it was City Hall and the LAPD operating in tight lockstep.
And I find it hilarious that you defend your desperate attempt to blame all bad urban policing exclusively on Democrats by accusing me of TEAMism when I point out that you're being simplistic.
Gates and Bradley hated each other.
Note that you didn't come up with any examples of what Bradley did to correct police behavior in the two decades he had the chance.
And WTF is wrong with you? How the hell can you equate "both political sides in America are awful when it comes to control of the police" with "blam(ing) all bad urban policing exclusively on Democrats"? I've explicitly said in two separate posts that both sides are appalling while you keep defending one side. What you're doing is classic TEAMism.
"And I find it hilarious that you defend your desperate attempt to blame all bad urban policing exclusively on Democrats "
What the fuck are you talking about?
Because I read his post, and he never said that.
Not one, Tony? Not even the Democrats that ARE cops?
Statists are on left and right and statists rule by force and fear.
They do want to change the status quo..such as arresting "climate deniers". It doesn't matter to me if they are rough or all smiles when they are arresting me for a thought crime.
Yes, your tears for LaVoy Finicum simply drown me...
Right - not the liberals that have run Detroit, Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, not a single one of them supports the criminal justice status quo.
Not the CA pols that voted for 'three strikes'. Not the national level pols that voted for mandatory minimums and for crack cocaine sentences to be 18+ times what the same weight in straight cocaine would get you.
None of them.
Its all those ebil republicans.
I'm not saying Democrats, particularly their leadership, are great on criminal justice reform. But I do think you'd find a lot less people cheering this statement, even if it wasn't coming from Trump.
That many on the left are in favor of violence against the wrong people does not mean they're in favor of this kind of violence.
It's sad, as it seemed like a few years ago, support for criminal justice reform was increasing among conservatives, but that's pretty much collapsed completely since then.
Well...yeah. Obama isn't in charge of the government any more.
We'll always have tax cuts for billionaires. Maybe.
Not if "alt-right" Bannon has a say in it, we won't.
We vote for parties more than people.
And Tony, as is his habit, sometimes gets one right.
That is part of the problem: voting for team. Which is ridiculous. For instance, voting for Rand Paul and voting for John McCain are two entirely different things.
They'd have the same Congress and special interests to deal with.
Trillionaires. Trillionaires, the basterds!
Yeah, America seems to have elected the loud-mouth, ignorant tuff guy drunk at the end of the bar in the local taproom.
Yeah, America seems to have elected the loud-mouth, ignorant tuff guy drunk at the end of the bar in the local taproom.
"Bush the lesser!"
Did I guess correctly?
*Readies*
There is also this - do not in any manner associate creech's comment with my response to her or him. I think creech's comment was appropriate to many Presidents, Senators, Representatives, and various other elected individuals who are loud-mouthed, ignorant, and who manage to be elected.
To be fair, I think Trump's point (or what he was trying to convey, in his usually inarticulate manner) is that cops shouldn't go out of their way to accommodate dangerous criminals - like putting their hands on top of the heads of criminals when putting them inside transport vehicles. They can lower their heads by themselves. Which goes to show Trump's belief that police are unfairly treated by the media, vilified by activists and forced to endanger themselves to protect criminals.
He does say you "see" guys being thrown roughly inside paddy wagons and you don't have to be too nice to them, but I think he's playing some Clint Eastwood movie in his head.
Except that pesky little detail of a trial: they're not dangerous criminals when they are being put in a police car, they are innocent until proven guilty citizens accused of being dangerous criminals. Not really a minor point.
Fair enough, but in Trump's mind "these people" are just caught dealing drugs or having shot at cops or something. Dangerous criminals.
He had a point to make, it just didn't come through that well.
"It is illegal for law enforcement to beat or otherwise use excessive force on suspects"
That's only true if the cops are caught on tape forgetting to yell "stop resisting" during the beating.
Oh, please. Maybe all the laughter should clue people in when Trump is being tongue-in-cheek. If any officer suddenly decides to go against department policy, the law, and their sworn oath because of a joke like this, it's not because of the joke. It's because that officer is an idiot. I work in education, and it's the equivalent of a teacher saying "I wan't to strangle this kid." Maybe the author can also view 12 Angry Men and study the "I'm gonna kill ya" scene. Also, the "example" you provided for demonstrating the law at the end is absurd in this situation. Trump didn't say to "beat up handcuffed heroin-addicts." Reason needs to be a little more reasonable. This is not newsworthy.
Trump already did his routine for kids. You know when he regaled them with tales of the sex yacht?
Yeah, they sort of made too much of a hyperbole. To be fair, he has.... encouraged or implied violence on some people in the past.
Can't imagine why all these ambush killing of police officers take place.
Trump's just playing to his audience, he's got a great line for every occasion. It's how sociopaths operate. It says a lot more about his audience than it does about Trump.
Which is the point: his audience is law enforcement officers, and they liked the idea of abusing handcuffed and legally-still-innocent citizens that they have sworn to "serve and protect". Fuck those Jack booted thugs.
I don't see any problem with the words that are quoted in this piece. At most he is saying it's ok to give some off these guys a shove, even if they might get a bump on the head. A little humiliation would have a salutary effect on them, and on any onlookers with similar criminal ideas.
Yes, because if a cop arrested you, you must be guilty. Why even bother with a trial?
"At most he is saying it's ok to give some off these guys a shove, even if they might get a bump on the head."
Yeah, who gives a shit that they may be, you know, innocent? Or they're being arrested for Photography Against a Cop or Contempt of Cop? Or that an eyewitness was confused or lying. Or that the cops arrested the wrong guy who's unlucky enough to have the same name as the right guy. Doesn't matter. A little humiliation is good for the innocent as well as the guilty. Just to make sure that they continue on the straight and narrow, amirite?
Would anyone really even give a damn about police brutality if the only thing they did was pursue crimes against persons and property? And not some flavor of the era crime?
We will have people alive who will witness cops arrest gays for being gay and arrest business owners for not serving them. Arrest people for possession of marijuana, arrest people for selling marijuana without a license.
I've gotten into arguments with family members who are police and I always try to point out how nobody would protest you if all you did was police crimes that have victims. You'll never see a protest against a cop who was too rough on a burglar caught in the act.
Fuck the police and Trump being Trump. This is filler news.
The cops are a boot in the face not a helping hand. They exist to protect and serve the State not the People. They are nothing but a criminal gang.
And yeah--the fact that NK can probably hit EVERY US STATE EXCEPT FLORIDA should scare the living shit out of us all--yet--the WH is so immersed in juvenile antics and insults and putting paste in the girls hair they haven't even noticed.||| EARN MONEY JOB -
If Obama had uttered those same words the media criticizing Trump would have been fawning all over him with praise.
The left is criticizing Trump because he is scoring points with law enforcement who are potential voters.
Obama was no friend of law enforcement, Remember Prof Henry Louis Gates the Harvard professor who was detained by a Cambridge police Sargent in 2009 who observed him attempting to break into a residence, later proved to be his own. Gates had no identification on his person. Obama got involved by accusing the officer of "acting stupidly" for doing his job.
I'm getting so fucking tired of the right-wing trolls around here.
Can we go back to having only left-wing trolls so that I can go back to just hating left-wingers, instead of both left and right wingers equally?
I am really interesting to read this admin thanks for this.
