Two important Supreme Court decisions came down today upholding citizens' free speech rights. The court ruled that the federal government cannot reject trademarks just because they use "offensive" language. The court also ruled that states cannot ban sex offenders from participating in social media sites.

  • The Supreme Court also agreed to hear a case on gerrymandering in Wisconsin.
  • After the United States downed a Syrian warplane, Russia is threatening to target aircraft flown by the U.S. and its allies over Syria.
  • A driver crashed into a police vehicle and died in Paris in what authorities believe was an attempted terrorist attack. Nobody else was injured.
  • Seattle Police shot and killed a 30-year-old pregnant woman who had called police to report a robbery. Police said she drew a knife on them. Family members say she was struggling with mental health issues.
  • Outgoing Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) says he doesn't think President Donald Trump's administration is going to be any more transparent than Barack Obama's, and he's disappointed. Well, we have all those leaks, though.

The Supreme Court also agreed to hear a case on gerrymandering in Wisconsin.

Gerry's not gonna like this. Neither is the GOP, I assume.

    1. Rufus The Monocled   8 years ago

      Hello.

      Good on SCOTUS!

    2. JFree   8 years ago

If the SC made the right decision, both parties would be the losers. Since they most likely won't make that decision, only the American people will be the losers.

    3. Lord_at_War   8 years ago

"Gerrymandering" is all on Dems. We have two legally ordained "minority-majority" districts in OH that will elect any black Dem by a 75-25 margin. We also have metro Toledo and Cleveland that will also regularly elect a Dem... and Repubs win all the rest 55-45 or 53-47.

      1. JFree   8 years ago

I have no idea whether Ohio is gerrymandered - but its pretty clear you don't really understand what it actually is. Because what you are describing is called packing and cracking - and with those results it would be the R's doing it.

Good stuff from the USSC today.

    1. Tom Bombadil   8 years ago

Unfortunately, good news is bad news according to Welch in the next article.

  3. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

...Russia is threatening to target aircraft flown by the U.S. and its allies over Syria.

Hey! The U.S. has dibs on No Fly.

    1. Mithrandir   8 years ago

Who's fucking idea were no-fly zones?

  4. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

Still bracing myself for the massive nutslap the universe is surely preparing in order that balance may be restored.

    1. Rich   8 years ago

Something like "hate" language is legally a separate category from "offensive" language?

    2. Chipper Morning, Now #1   8 years ago

Like beaver alarming mate of danger with loud slap, universe smack Citizen X scrotum with police abuse story.

    3. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

What is the Trumpocalypse, chopped liver?

      1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

That's just some trifling shit that way too many people won't stop whining about.

Lena Dunham's dad taught her how to use a tampon

"? It was late August and I was hiking at sunset with my father when I felt something trickling down my leg. My first reaction was, naturally, that I had peed myself a whole bunch," the "Girls" creator recounted on Instagram. "When I realized it was blood I shrieked wildly ? my first suspicion is always fatal injury ? as my father looked at me, misty-eyed. 'This, this mountain, is where we were the moment you became a woman. In many cultures you'd have to start birthing children now.' I was like 'can we please get home right f?king now and off this mountain?'"

    1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

      What a dreadful anecdote.

    2. Rufus The Monocled   8 years ago

She's all dreary banality this chick.

    3. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

I should have Lena Dunham sign my trash can.

    4. BearOdinson   8 years ago

Crusty, you have finally gone too far!!

This cannot stand, man. This aggression cannot stand!

      1. Chipper Morning, Now #1   8 years ago

Crusty always offers his penis as a tampon.

    5. Chipper Morning, Now #1   8 years ago

Still better than dreaming of being abducted by aliens and then waking up to a blood-soaked bed to the arrival of your menarche. This happened to someone I know.

The anesthesia used by the Greys often causes people to assume those were dreams.

If this were true, we'd have known about it long before now. Her first period? First anecdote, for sure. Sounds like instead she finally watched Armageddon.

    7. Juice   8 years ago

Yeah, she had NO IDEA what was happening.

      1. BearOdinson   8 years ago

Every fucking day I thank Freyr (the god of fertility) that I only have sons and no daughters!!

        Fucking "misty-eyed"??

More like "Here is a piece of my shirt. Stuff it in there until we get home!"

        1. mad.casual   8 years ago

More like "Here is a piece of my shirt. Stuff it in there until we get home!"

Fuck that! Shirts cost money. Unless you're going to bleed to death, rub dirt on it until it stops bleeding.

Do you have a newsletter I could subscribe to?

    9. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   8 years ago

Everything Lena believes or has experienced is a social construct.

    10. Meh.   8 years ago

So her dad taught her how to use a tampon, she molested her sister... I hate to ask what kind of a messed-up relationship she had with her mom, but I'm sure she'll tell us all soon!

      1. Square = Circle   8 years ago

Well, her dad specializes in crude "art" cartoons of naked women, mostly with really prominent hairy vaginas as the focal point.

Her mom could be totally normal, in other words, and all would still be explained.

  6. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

After the United States downed a Syrian warplane, Russia is threatening to target aircraft flown by the U.S. and its allies over Syria.

Wouldn't it just be easier for Putin to call Trump's cell?

    1. Tom Bombadil   8 years ago

Not pr effective. Don't you see the ongoing conspiracy? Trump tells Putin he needs an anti-Ruskie act to boost his cred. Putin says, you're not fucking with one of our planes. They agree on Syria. Nobody likes him anyway. Trump gets a kill. Putin cries fake tears and makes some threats. Everybody wins.

Guarantee that will be mainstream libtard talking point within 24 hours.

  7. WakaWaka   8 years ago

"Well, we have all those leaks, though"

    Which have mostly blown-up spectacularly

  8. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

A driver crashed into a police vehicle and died in Paris in what authorities believe was an attempted terrorist attack. Nobody else was injured.

    No virgins for you!

    1. BearOdinson   8 years ago

If I get to Valhalla, I am going to laugh my ass off when I see that all those Islamist terrorsists who thought they were getting 72 virgins are nothing but target practice for the Einherjar!

      1. PurityDiluting   8 years ago

Or as Robin Williams once explained, it's a typo ... 72 Virginians are waiting to pummel the terrorists

    2. Chipper Morning, Now #1   8 years ago

Haha, imagine if the Soup Nazi is the gatekeeper in Muslim heaven.

Vous avez eu un seul travail!

  11. Illocust   8 years ago

Wait, does this mean the redskins are no longer in danger of losing their trademark?

    1. Rich   8 years ago

      Excellent.

    2. The Last American Hero   8 years ago

      Yes it does.

    3. Bubba Jones   8 years ago

Ironic because they wanted to consolidate and take over the cases. This seems to have worked out well enough for them.

    4. Tom Bombadil   8 years ago

"Wait, does this mean the redskins are no longer in danger of losing their trademark?"

Only until the next ruling which will state that cultural appropriation is hate speech which is a crime.

  12. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

Seattle Police shot and killed a 30-year-old pregnant woman who had called police to report a robbery. Police said she drew a knife on them. Family members say she was struggling with mental health issues

    Medals of courage incoming.

    1. Zeb   8 years ago

      Don't bring a knife to a gunfight.

      1. B.P.   8 years ago

I think the gunfight traveled to the woman in this instance.

  13. Crusty Juggler - Elite   8 years ago

    Tripping Up Trump

Commentators are expressing shock ? and in many cases pleasure ? that President Trump and his associates could face criminal exposure not for original wrongdoing but for their reaction to accusations of wrongdoing. Nobody who has paid attention to American criminal justice for the last generation should be shocked. It is routine ? mundane, even ? for federal investigators to convict people not for the subject of the investigation but for how they reacted to it.

Ken White with a good read.

    1. Bubba Jones   8 years ago

      Mike Pence will outlaw abortion.

  14. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Outgoing Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) says he doesn't think President Donald Trump's administration is going to be any more transparent than Barack Obama's, and he's disappointed.

WRONG. Obama didn't tweet every fucking thought.

  15. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

Outgoing Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) says he doesn't think President Donald Trump's administration is going to be any more transparent than Barack Obama's, and he's disappointed. Well, we have all those leaks, though.

Really? I feel as if I'm on the President's cabinet as a yes man proofreading every tweet.

  16. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

The court ruled that the federal government cannot reject trademarks just because they use "offensive" language.

But the court is part of the government. Way to own goal it, dummies.

  17. Aloysious   8 years ago

Seattle Police shot and killed a 30-year-old pregnant woman who had called police to report a robbery.

    fta:

"Officers were confronted by a 30-year-old woman armed with a knife," the department wrote on its web blotter. "Both officers fired their duty weapons, striking the woman.

    'Duty weapons'?

    1. Zeb   8 years ago

Cop talk is really weird. That seems to be a quote of the police department's record of the events.

      1. Aloysious   8 years ago

It is weird. I understand why they speak that way (controlling the narrative. I think of it as marketing; selling the version of the story they want us to believe), it just comes across to me as alien, inhuman.

    2. Rich   8 years ago

As opposed to their Dirty Weapons.

    3. BearOdinson   8 years ago

These fucking assholes in "law enforcement" have seriously taken the "warrior" (and I use that term with my tongue firmly in cheek) attitude way too fucking far. A person is not a fucking "hero" if their safety takes precedence over that of the people they are ostensibly trying to protect.

I know who ISN'T ever getting to Valhalla!

    4. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

      'Duty weapons'?

Those are the guns they shoot, as opposed to the 'drug busters' which are for planting on black folk.

    5. Illocust   8 years ago

Cops have the guns they are given, and then the ones that they prefer to use. Same with handcuffs. Many police departments will allow a cop to bring their own equipment as long as it meets certain standards.

      1. Tom Bombadil   8 years ago

It's still a duty weapon. This police report wasn't trying to help the reader who was wondering if they shot their own gun or the PD supplied gun. This police report was trying to avoid using the word "gun".

    6. Tom Bombadil   8 years ago

      " fired their duty weapons,"

They threw feces at the woman?

  18. Crusty Juggler - Elite   8 years ago

Sofia Coppola Faces Backlash for Saying 'The Beguiled' Is About Gender, Not Race

However, in the wake of that article being published, the response online hasn't been great, seeing as how many are mystified that a story set during the Civil War would completely eschew race. The valid point was also made that by focusing this film exclusively on the dynamics between white men and women ? during a war that was rooted in very serious race issues ? it comes across as erasure.

    1. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

Sofia Coppola has my eternal support for Lost in Translation, fing love that movie. Also a total babe.

      1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

If she were still facing a backlash for her performance in Godfather III, though, i'd understand.

        1. Crusty Juggler - Elite   8 years ago

          "Joey...*fires gun*...Za-Za!"

        2. Chipper Morning, Now #1   8 years ago

The Godfather sequels are ever so thankful for Highlander II.

          1. BearOdinson   8 years ago

They did NOT make a sequel to Highlander. Do you understand??

THEY DID NOT MAKE A SEQUEL TO HIGHLANDER!!

            1. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

What do you xenophobes have against magic alien swordsmen?

              1. BearOdinson   8 years ago

          2. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

            Wait. There's another Highlander?

        3. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

Pops instructed me from a young age to watch Godfather I and II but never watch three. I still haven't seen it to this day.

          1. The Last American Hero   8 years ago

            Pops was wise.

I don't think III is THAT bad, but compared to I and II it's just not that good.

            Don't waste your time.

    2. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

Pfft, not even the war was about race.

The 50 Best Good Bad Movies

Come for the list, stay for the virtue-signaling contortionist writing to explain away plots. Also, eff all y'alls, Roadhouse is epic.

That's just like, your opinion man.

THE CHINAMAN IS NOT THE ISSUE!

    2. Rich   8 years ago

I can't believe Bug (*fantastic* ending) and The Food of the Gods (Golden Turkey Award for "Worst Rodent Movie of All Time") didn't make the list.

    3. lap83   8 years ago

I hate that list. It's like the writer has never seen any movie made before the 80's

      1. Crusty Juggler - Elite   8 years ago

Excuse me, for us coastal millennial elites the past begins with the 80s.

Good news for cops, because they're going to get OT funds to follow these people around on the social medias.

The King County Prosecutor's Office also will review the incident and likely call for a coroner's inquest.

I guess I'm cold-hearted, but I have trouble mustering much sympathy for a college student who for some reason voluntarily put themselves at the mercy of the North Korean government and then discovered that's a bad idea.

I prefer to reserve it for the millions of people who are suffering similarly through no choice of their own.

      1. Bubba Jones   8 years ago

Unless he was a CIA agent.
