'Star Trek'

In Winnipeg, Nick Troller has had a personalized license plate on his vehicle that reads "ASIMIL8" for the past two years. Around it he has a frame that says "We Are the Borg" and "Resistance is Futile." But now, Manitoba Public Insurance has demanded he return the license plate. It says two people have complained the word "assimilate" is offensive to indigenous people.

History quiz: who gets to decide how far back to go in political correctness?
"we" are criticized for our abuse of "native americans" because we came in here and whipped them and drove them off the part of the country where they happened to be when "we" showed up. But a few generations before "we" showed up, they came here from somewhere (best guess Russia over the land bridge) and whipped the people who were here before them and ran those guys off. And those guys probably came here and ran off whoever was here before them. Why is it only the current winners are the bad guys?

Good job putting "we" in quotes. I hate it when people talk about stuff that happened hundreds of years ago as if it had been done by people living now. No one is the bad guy (whether or not the people in the past were). We're all stuck with the world we were born into. And none of the Indians of the past were bad guys either, except maybe the ones who took land from earlier occupants. The whole idea of inherited guilt for things like that is responsible for a ridiculous amount of the violence in the world.

On a related note, I always think that the Canadian "first nations" designation for the indigenous peoples is a bit silly. They aren't the first nations. They were the last nations before Europeans completely dominated the continent. Plenty came before them, I'm sure.
