About two years ago, a young doe showed up at the Mcgaughey family farm in Kansas. The family fed and it, and soon the deer was playing with their pets and knocking on the door when it wanted to come into the house. Then one day, game wardens showed up at the house and shot the deer in front of the family. Even though the family had never confined the deer, the wardens said the deer was "unlawfully possessed" and state law does not allow people to keep deer as pets.

What is troubling about this incident, and the ensuing comments, is the presumption that the State of Kansas is somehow a rational and functional State. Kansas is so extreme in beliefs and political fervor that, were the continual stream of right wing insane blatherings just that, it would be amusing. The reality is that their leaders have crippled their economy with bizzare austerity measures, but left intact a heavy military/police thug force, that will show up with heavy weapons and backup, and kill a deer. Granted, that's easier than chasing their scourge of meth labs and users. But hey, it's a deer. The deer lovers are fortunate the weapons weren't turned on them...

Apparently emotion counts more than science at reason and little Charlie felt bad the deer died. The lack of understanding of wildlife management in this coverage is amazing. It is illegal in most states to possess live wild animals (as was this) and agencies have standards and protocols put in place by biologists for handling these animals. Chronic Wasting disease is spread between domestic deer (deer farms) and wild animals. When it got into New York there was a widespread culling of the deer herd in the infected area (hundreds of deer had to be killed) because someone wanted to allow the back and forth interaction between wild and domestic animals. One sided "they shot my baby deer" articles is not journalism, it is tree hugger propaganda.

Perhaps the deer was mistaken for a dog and the game warden was merely clearing the property of dangerous animals so the police could bust down a few doors, flash-bang a toddler and serve a warrant for an unpaid parking ticket in Topeka?

My mom had a pet deer growing up, where she lived in the hills. One day a hunter drove by and saw the deer, and shot. Good mountain girl that she was, my mom immediately started chasing after the hunter with a rifle. My grandparents were scared to death she would kill him. But not even mountain girls can run as fast as a car with driver driving for his life.

If they were letting the deer into the house they were "in possession," and at risk. Deer are wild animals, and no mater how acclimated to humans they are, they can be dangerous when cornered or startled, or during breeding season.

No, the warden shouldn't have shot it in front of the kids. But the parents seriously need educating, and the deer relocated..

That's the bottom line. Kill the deer somewhere else. I get why they killed it. However, just what did they teach the family? That in no way will The State use any common sense, tact, or show of actual good will.

My guess, they're all hoping to become bouncers for United.
