Who Posted Racist 'America Is a White Nation' Flyers? The Diversity Council
At Gustavus Adolphus College, racist posters were intended to start a dialogue about race.

Posters bearing the messages "America is a white nation" and "it is your civic duty to report any and all illegal aliens" have appeared at several campuses across the country in recent weeks—including George Washington University and the University of Maryland.
Are these racist screeds the handiwork of white supremacists? Perhaps. But not at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, where these exact same signs appeared all over campus.
This time, at least, the campus Diversity Leadership Team was responsible.
According to Campus Reform:
In response to the outrage over the flyers, the Diversity Leadership Council published a statement the night the posters surfaced admitting that members of the organization had "posted these signs" in "an effort to help educate [their] peers and campus community about issues of bias, and the importance of being an active bystander.
"We want to help put an end to bias-related incidents that happened on our campus, social media, and in our communities by forcing individuals to have dialogues about forms of hate and bias," the statement continues. "We hope that members of the campus community will reflect on today's events and join us in ensuring that no one student or group of students are ever a victim of this form of discrimination."
Needless to say, students were outraged.
"Sometimes I walk around crowded theaters yelling 'fire!'" said one person in an online comment. "I do it because I want to create awareness; thus no punishment is warranted."
Of course, posting an offensive flyer is not like shouting "fire!" in a crowded theater. Hate speech is free speech, and if student social justice activists want to post obnoxious flyers—for whatever reason—they should be free to do so, as long as they respect campus rules about flyering.
Same goes for the people behind the posters at GWU and Maryland. Officials at Maryland said they were investigating the incident, but there's nothing to investigate. It's a stupid and obnoxious stunt that should be ignored—no matter if the perpetrator is a leftist student, an alt-right troll, or just some prankster.

Who Posted Racist 'America Is a White Nation' Flyers?
Free Society? Tony? Unmourned ex-commenter black blood?
Shikha? SIV?
Reason's broken-ass commenting software?
You've managed to post three times already in this thread. How did you manage that? Bribe the server skwerrels?
Persistence, my friend. As well as a strong pimp hand on the mouse. And a fanatical devotion to the Pope.
Strong Pimp Hand On The Mouse was the name of my college gospel band.
The Diversity Council
Oh.
The Diversity Council was my nickname in college.
Robby Soave?!?!
What happened to Irish, anyway?
He is gone where the woodbine twineth.
Hitler?
The "America is a white nation" part makes me suspect that they are all fake. Not that there aren't people who say that. But the whole thing just sounds like some SJW's fevered conception of a typical Trump supporter.
Fevered Conception was my nickname in grad school.
Mine was Gustavus Adolphus.
Mine was Maculate Conception.
It'd be like hardcore temperance devotees putting up signs saying "We do so love the reefer" and blaming it on the pot legalization advocates.
At least figure out how your opponents sound before trying to mimic them.

Sure, in theory. In reality the "alt-right" perpetrators would be facing serious consequences.
And there would definitely be candle light vigils.
No one has ever been prosecuted for yelling "fire" in a crowded theater.
Unless that's a masturbation euphemism, in which case Paul Reubens would like to have some words.
This is also why Crusty was fired from his North Korean firing squad job.
Well, he was also too drunk to operate the anti-aircraft gun most days.
Little known fact: Crusty was the guy who missed with the mortar.
Schenck v. United States was such a bullshit ruling even the guy who 'crafted' the test eventually realized that he had made a massive mistake. Any time someone uses this example, I ask them why they're so in favor of the draft that my 1st amendment rights need to be curtailed.
Ironically it was a socialist who was prosecuted in that case too. Progressives are using an analogy made to justify prosecuting an anti-war leftist for speech to justify proposed speech restrictions.
They're being anti-ideological. Totally consistent.
forcing individuals to have dialogues about forms of hate and bias
And I'm sure they're all about "dialogue". Like when your boss wants to dialogue with you about your showing up late and drunk and wearing no pants, again.
You are allowed to shout fire in a crowded theater. You are not supposed to yell fire *falsely* in a crowded theater
I think of it the same as other crimes you can commit via words. Like hiring a hitman to kill someone or knowingly claiming a product you sell is something other than what it really is. What matter is what you knowingly/recklessly caused to happen by your behavior and whether others have a legitimate right to justice as a result.
Whoa. Really makes you think.
And if the diversity council is pushing this kind of rhetoric, just imagine what real racists are saying!
So... they were hoping a passerby would have punched the Diversity Person putting up the sign? That's what you're supposed to do, right?
Correct, because, as we have all learned, words we don't like are hateful and thus actual violence, and knocking the shit out of people saying things we don't like is self defense.
I'm not sure I understand how posting this flyer is "not like shouting 'fire!' in a crowded theater"... it created a sense of alarm and maybe even a real threat of danger to undocumented immigrants. According to the quote from the Dean in the National Review article that Mazakon posted in the links comments this morning, this was "invisible theater". I guess my question is, how are we supposed to determine what is invisible theater, especially since it seems to take a while for the "actors" to reveal that's what it's been this whole time? Since there's no way of knowing for sure, it seems like the reasonable response would be to react as if it were an emergency, just like when someone shouts "Fire!" in a crowded theater.
I agree that these students have the right to free speech, no matter how disturbing, and I don't mean to nitpick, but I think yelling "Fire!" is a perfect analogy and we shouldn't just shrug off The Diversity Council's behavior.
"We" should definitely find a way to blame it on Trump, though!
Trump is so evil that he did not order his deplorable minions to post these flyers so concerned students had to step in and do it.
The yelling "fire" thing has never been tested in court. It's a pure hypothetical, not a legal precedent.
And this really is nothing like that. The posters don't falsely claim that there is an immanent danger or falsely alarm people in a way that is likely to create an immediately dangerous situation.
Most people are going to see "America is a white nation" and ignore the rest. Anyone who is going to believe that it's their civic duty to turn in illegal immigrants doesn't need a sign to tell them.
Ah okay, I thought that was an actual law... and those are good points.
This seems like a good opportunity to bring up the fact that Oliver Wendell Holmes was an asshole.
You know who else wanted to start a dialog about race?
Hanna-Barbera Productions?
Almost Batman and Robin level homosexual subtext in that show.
Michael Jackson?
Ricky Bobby?
Speed Racer and Chim-chim?
Paul Walker and Vin Diesel? "Race Wars" lol
"At Gustavus Adolphus College, racist posters were intended to start a dialogue about race"
Are you suggesting that, had it really been white supremacists, they would not have wanted "a dialogue" to spread their own racist perspectives and goals? God I hate that stupid SJW jargon.
If your "problem" requires hoaxes to show how bad it is, then perhaps your "problem" really isn't that bad.
That Reichstag isn't going to just magically set itself on fire you know.
It's a stupid and obnoxious stunt that should be ignored
Yet here you are, not ignoring it.
"I don't understand the difference between administering a college and writing an opinion article" - Tony
One gets the impression that the antics of college freshmen are a particular fixation for you people, as if it might be the biggest problem society is facing right now.
Let me assure you, just in case--it's not.
"I don't understand the difference between a person writing an article on a website and a person making flippant comments on said article" - Tony
Lighten up snow flake and get on board the trump train!
Just as it's heading into a ravine?
At this point, my base assumption is that all instances of racist flyers, poop swastikas, anti-semetic death threats, burning crosses, burning churches, un-filmed "guys in a truck yelled racial slurs at me" are lies, false flags, etc.
ALSO JESUS FUCKING CHRIST REASON FIX YOUR FUCKING COMMENT SYSTEM.
Come on. Alt-right yokels don't go around posting flyers on college campuses. They troll libertarian message boards instead.
It's okay, Hazel, there's room for more trolls under your bridge.
Ahh yes, I forgot the mainstream libertarians are now the trolls, and the alt-right yokels are now the mainstream libertarians. At least on this website.
If you don't think working class white people deserve to have their jobs specially protected from trade and immigration, you're a racist! You hate white people! Everyone knows that being a national and a people means protecting your ethnic purity of essence by keeping out Spanish speaking Catholics.
"Mainstream libertarians" like you who support hate speech laws, welfare, price controls, wage controls, single-payer healthcare, free college, public accommodation laws, and racial quotas?
So is the SPLC going to add this to their statistics to show that white nationalism is on the rise in the US?
I'm less inclined to ignore something that is done for the sole purpose of making someone else look bad. The Council got called out but anyone outside of the Tony crowd can figure out that this was done to make it seem as though that nefarious "alt-right" group was the perpetrator.
By the way, whatever happened to that 'epidemic' of trashing Jewish cemeteries? For some odd reason, it seems less and less plausible that anti-Semites on the right were behind it.
Not something one wants to google but I know the one in Brooklyn where a bunch of tombstones were knocked down was determined to be caused by poor maintenance and weather.
And in philadelphia, if you read the actual news story about the vandalism (rather than just headlines or bias-pushing "analyses"), it mentions a large number of tombstones had also been knocked over nearby a couple weeks earlier in a catholic cemetery.
Hate speech is free speech, and if student social justice activists want to post obnoxious flyers?for whatever reason?they should be free to do so, as long as they respect campus rules about flyering.
Did what was on those flyers count as hate speech? Is hate speech definable? Is it an actual thing? Do the Philadelphia Flyers suck?
The answer to only one of those questions is yes.
FTFY
racist posters were intended to start a dialogue about race
Of course. It's been hours since there's been a dialogue about race.
Hate speech is free speech
There is no such thing as "hate speech". There is no such thing as "free speech". There is only the "freedom of speech", and you either have it or you do not.
What difference, at this point, does it (who made the signs and for what purpose) make? Awareness has been raised!
And, more importantly, we have video proof of people just ingoring the flyers being posted. This is indicative of the real problem. Corrective coercion is clearly called for.
