Calif. Officials Deny Reports on Dam Safety Warnings, Trump and Trudeau Trade Valentines, Dems Don't Think They Need Changes: P.M. Links

  • Oroville Dam
    William Croyle/ZUMA Press/Newscom

As more than 180,000 Californians are ordered to evacuate an area that could be flooded by the failure of Oroville Dam, state officials are denying reports that they ignored safety warnings about the dam more than a decade ago.

  • President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have vowed to work together on growth and jobs.
  • The wife and stepson of a Ku Klux Klan leader found dead in Missouri over the weekend have been arrested and charged with his murder. Someday I'll have to share with y'all the time in college I and several gay and multiracial friends decided to go camping and canoeing one holiday weekend in rural Missouri and ended up essentially surrounded by skinheads ("White Power" tattoos and Nazi salutes and all). Rest assured that when you're around actual Nazis in the wild, there's no discussion about whether you should punch them.
  • Officials believe that North Korea's latest missile launch shows advances in their technological capabilities. Also, a guest at Trump's resort at Mar-A-Lago took photos of the president being briefed out in the open about the missile test and posted them on Facebook.
  • New Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's first major international trip may be to Mexico in coming weeks.
  • Democratic Party leaders seem to think that they lost because they didn't sell their platform hard enough and talked too much about Trump, and a reporter attending a weekend retreat saw little suggestion of changes in policy proposals.
  • The Department of Justice appears to be stepping back from President Barack Obama's push to force transgender accommodation in school facilities. The DOJ is withdrawing a motion to try to scale back an order that blocked nationally orders from the Obama administration to accommodate. That's, like, a triple negative there. To explain: A federal judge previously put an injunction blocking the administration from enforcing an order that public schools accommodate transgender students in facilities. The previous Obama administration was attempting to request that the block only apply to the states legally resisting the order. The new administration is withdrawing that request.

I watched Deliverance for the first time last week. I used to spend most of my summers in North Georgia, and I’m now in the middle of snowmageddon II in Nova Scotia, so I think I got the wrong things out of that movie. I would love to be tooling around the woods with friends from Atlanta right now.

        1. John   8 years ago

The funny thing about North Georgia and Western North Carolina is that it is nothing like that now. It is all vacation land for rich people from Charlotte and Atlanta.

          1. Feminist Killjoy   8 years ago

It was starting to get like that even when I was there in the 90’s. For every weird lot with a tiny trailer surrounded by 5 sheds and pieces of dead cars, there’d be a new “rustic cabin” with a paved road. The girl scout camps even got fancy upgrades and toilets and shit. It’s just all so close to Atlanta.

            1. Robert   8 years ago

Well of course if the Girl Scouts got toilets, you didn’t have to list separately that they got shit.

Nah, the German stuff never had clever names. Now Czech porn…Double Czech (twins!), Czeching In (hotel themed), Czech Point (military themed), etc.

            1. Rhywun   8 years ago

That country is some sort of hotbed, isn’t it.

              1. jesse.in.mb   8 years ago

Late ’90s/early ’00s they were dominating the foreign-made gay porn market. Folks from other countries were pretending to be Czech just to get in on the money available. I think there was an uptick in economic opportunity there because that market dropped precipitously moving into the mid-’00s.

                1. DiegoF   8 years ago

I have read pretty thoroughly up on this, and am surprised to hear that. If I remember correctly, the Czech Republic was the hotbed of male-male porn production and Hungary the male-female. (The studios were almost always American owned.) But models in both countries always adopted names and personas from other countries, even though they were mostly locals. And the videos (this was when this was actually important) were unavailable for sale in their home countries in both cases, and the models were consequently able to keep a good deal of privacy in those days. (For the dudes, it mattered also that the Czech Republic had almost nothing in the way of either homophobia or a gay community–they were just generally uninterested in sexual identity and what people did behind closed doors.) One Czech model was actually able to have a burgeoning and very prominent career as a TV spokesmodel (for food products and such) and later professional MMA fighter and fitness personality, and only got exposed when he went on Big Brother!

So long story short I’m surprised there would be any profit in actually claiming to be Czech or Hungarian.

                I said “etc”

But yes there was a Czech Mate. A website called Czech Hunter came out in 2015 and reused a bunch of the puns and it’s impossible to find some of the older titles now. It might’ve been Czech Mates.

There was also a hockey themed one whose title escapes me.

    3. Bacon-Magic <3 Hayek   8 years ago

Scott probably went to Bass River. It has a campsite their that is a bit wild. I’ve never seen Nazis or KKK there though. I used to go canoeing down there all the time(read canoeing as mainly drinking/smoking/whatever).
Now I did live a block away from a real Skinhead. We used to go over there and get druuuuuunk. Me and my black friends. The Skinhead got his ass kicked…a lot. The best time was when he puked on a friend of ours shoes.

      1. Bacon-Magic <3 Hayek   8 years ago

Amend that. It was one black friend, the rest were white. NO he was not a token.

        1. Not a True MJG   8 years ago

          1. Bacon-Magic <3 Hayek   8 years ago

Will it be black and shiny? It was part of the skinhead theme so…fuck off.

            1. DiegoF   8 years ago

I assume he was having a bit of fun with you! But I do find this story intriguing but am a little unclear. Were you and your friends doing the ass kicking? After the poor guy had invited you over for beer? Or did he just generally get his ass kicked throughout his life?

              1. Bacon-Magic <3 Hayek   8 years ago

His house was a party house. We were under age at the time. We shall call the skinhead Zed, he enjoyed inviting people into his home then would stage sjw(he did this before it’s current popularity), petty, aggressive, cruel, drama rich, attention seeking outburts usually involving the weakest member of the groups that would socialize there at the time. The fights were usually someone sticking up for himself or others. The puking incident is a case in point; Zed puked on some 105# kid’s shoes intentionally after he was warned not to. One person kicked his ass. I really do believe Zed’s whole schtick was simply to make as shitty a mark on humanity he could.

                1. Not a True MJG   8 years ago

(to be clear, I was making a joke by channeling John)

Cool story. I wonder if Zed’s dead, baby.

Beware exploding whales: New Zealand issues warning after mass stranding

Beachgoers in New Zealand have been warned to steer clear of exploding whales after the mass stranding that left hundreds of whale carcasses rotting on a beach in the country’s South Island.

Reuters reports that authorities are cutting holes in 300 decomposing pilot whale carcasses, popping the dead animals “like balloons” to prevent them from exploding on the remote beach on South Island’s Golden Bay. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation cordoned off the carcasses and issued a statement warning of the risk posed by exploding whales, according to Reuters.

It’s like prom night in Louisiana!

      1. Chipper Morning Wood   8 years ago

I think these are pilot whales, so they are not huge. Still, there are many of them. For some reason, pilot whales love to commit mass suicide by strandings. No one knows why.

Harvard has created a ‘liquid’ battery that could last for more than a decade

The team has developed a so-called flow battery which stores energy in liquid solutions. This solution modifies the molecules in electrolytes, ferrocene and viologen to make them stable, water-soluble, and stop them degrading over time. Dissolved in water, the molecules lose just one per cent of capacity for every 1,000 charging cycle. The battery is non-toxic, non-corrosive and lasts for far longer than current Lithium-ion models ? estimated at a decade, rather than months.
Batteries of this type are often used as a storage solution for renewable, unpredictable energy sources such as wind and solar, but require regular electrolyte maintenance.
“Because we were able to dissolve the electrolytes in water, this is a long-lasting battery that you could put in your basement,” said Roy Gordon, professor of chemistry and materials science at Harvard University who co-led the research. “If spilt on the floor, it wouldn’t eat the concrete and since the medium is noncorrosive, you can use cheaper materials to build the components of the batteries, like the tanks and pumps.”

    1. StartSpreadinTheFakeNews, Jr.   8 years ago

Translation: a new smartphone will need a new battery in seven weeks instead of six.

    2. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

That’s interesting, hopefully that can lead to improvements in energy density. That’s the real issue bottleneck of batteries.

      1. ant1sthenes   8 years ago

I think flow batteries are intended for industrial-sized storage, where the location is fixed and density matters less than efficiency and lifespan. Could be useful for peak shifting power, or at least more useful than a million banks of Tesla batteries like some companies want to try.

Someday I’ll have to share with y’all the time in college I and several gay and multiracial friends decided to go camping and canoeing one holiday weekend in rural Missouri and ended up essentially surrounded by skinheads (“White Power” tattoos and Nazi salutes and all).

Damn you, you can’t just leave it hanging like that! The suspense is too incredible! All I can imagine for now is the “white power” guys from HBO’s Oz and a spoon.

    1. John   8 years ago

The “mutliracial” part was a nice tough. Scott would never lower himself to camping with white people much less straight white people. Scott is a regular Milo Yinaoppolis in that regard.

Awkward as fuck phrasing or not, there IS a bit of a story difference in the implications of a bunch of white dudes out in the woods suddenly finding themselves in contact with a bunch of skinheads and a bunch of non-white dudes out in the woods suddenly finding themselves in contact with a bunch of skinheads. The implications of both situations are markedly different, enough to make the mention of his friend’s races relevant to explaining why the story might be interesting.

        1. John   8 years ago

It is not that it isn’t relevant. It is just how is that everyone he was with was either multiracial and or gay? The gay part I get. But it reads like there was some requirement that you either be gay or multiracial to go, which is pretty funny.

Pepper spray ‘prank’ leads to evacuation at Hamburg airport

Emergency services temporarily evacuated Hamburg airport Sunday and treated almost 70 people after an irritant gas was released in the building – probably by a “prankster” using pepper spray, firefighters said.

The northern city’s airport was closed and 13 flights delayed or diverted between 11.30am and 12.45pm after people reported an unusual smell, respiratory ailments, nausea and stinging eyes.

Firefighters later said they had found an empty cartridge that was thought to have contained pepper spray, which is sold in Germany for personal self-defence.

A spokesman of the Hamburg fire department told media that an unknown “prankster” was thought to have released the gas, which then spread via the hall’s ventilation system.

The Department of Justice appears to be stepping back from President Barack Obama’s push to force transgender accommodation in school facilities. The DOJ is withdrawing a motion to try to scale back an order that blocked nationally orders from the Obama administration to accommodate. That’s, like, a triple negative there. To explain: A federal judge previously put an injunction blocking the administration from enforcing an order that public schools accommodate transgender students in facilities. The previous Obama administration was attempting to request that the block only apply to the states legally resisting the order. The new administration is withdrawing that request.

A sort-of biergarten I visited recently has a giant unisex restroom with nothing but a dozen or so stalls and the sinks. I thought it was an elegant solution.

The worst solution is when there are two single use bathrooms that were previously gender specific and they turn them both into anyone can use them.

As long as there are enough stalls I don’t mind, but I do think the urinals add a level of efficiency.

              1. Wash or wipe your hands clean with a moist towellette.
              2. Adjust clothing. Pants should be pulled down in front a few inches. Skirts should be lifted. Underwear should be pulled down at the waistband or move the fabric at the crotch to one side.
              3. Wipe your labia area clean.
              4. Using either hand, make a “V” with your first and second finger and spread the inside of your labia minora. (the INNER lips) Beginners may want to try using the fingers from both hands for better control.
              5. Lift to the desired angle, then pee. (If you don’t spread and lift, it could run down your leg.)
              6. Wipe your labia if necessary.
              7. Wash your hands and you’re done!

She was born with both sets of organs and the parents chose to amputate the penis, which was the wrong decision apparently. Please don’t excuse violence, because it’s hip.

I once once found myself at a skin head St. Patrick’s Day party on the South Side of Chicago and my first response was not “I’m going to punch everyone, because of feelz”.

I got this in an email for the meetup app. Wtf? What is up with lefties in creating realities that dont exist

Meetup has always served as an organizing platform for a wide range of political views, welcoming everyone from the Howard Deaniacs to the Tea Party. Meetup will always welcome people with different beliefs.

But after the recent executive order aimed to block people on the
basis of nationality and religion, a line was crossed. At a time when core democratic ideals feel under attack, we feel a duty to spark more civic participation.

Last week, we created 1,000+ #Resist Meetup Groups to act as local hubs for actions on behalf of democracy, equality, human rights, social justice, and sustainability. Already 50,000+ people have joined.

These #Resist Meetups are open to anyone who want to create a bright future that’s rich with opportunity and freedom for all.

Meetup exists to connect people so they create opportunity and make the world they want. We hope members take these Meetups forward to be powerful together.

To explain: A federal judge previously put an injunction blocking the administration from enforcing an order that public schools accommodate transgender students in facilities. The previous Obama administration was attempting to request that the block only apply to the states legally resisting the order. The new administration is withdrawing that request.”

As more than 180,000 Californians are ordered to evacuate an area that could be flooded by the failure of Oroville Dam, state officials are denying reports that they ignored safety warnings about the dam more than a decade ago.

CA DWS officials were relying on the scientific consensus regarding the consequences of anthropogenic climate change. See, for example, this paper from the National Academy of Sciences.

Why waste money on maintaining emergency overflow systems for a reservoir? The State of California needed that money for choo-choo trains, alternative energy, and transgender restrooms, Something like 97% of all climate scientists agreed that California is in a permanent drought, so there was very little risk in neglecting maintenance on systems that were rendered unnecessary by climate change.

Many Democrats think they lost because they didn’t get the Bernie bros because they elected a moderate white woman instead of a non-white radical. (Never mind Bernie is about as white as you can get)

Also helps to energize the base because they love Islam and hate Christians and Jews (practicing Jews anyway, the semi-atheist ones they love)

Trump was so worried about ‘protecting’ us from a terrorist attack that he didn’t realize the country was falling apart. Fortunately he hasn’t squandered a lot of money on the wall yet.

Apple’s Tim Cook says fake news is “killing people’s minds”. Anything to avoid talking about the fact that he is running a once great company into the ground I guess.

    1. EdWuncler   8 years ago

My new iPhone 7 is a piece of shit. It constantly freezes on me or turns off automatically. If he actually stopped talking politics and focused his energy on making a good product, a lot less people would be dissatisfied with his company’s products.

I got a 13″macbook in 2006. It was a freebee from work @ a consulting firm. I liked some things about it, but it very quickly started to melt itself because – from what i learned from talking to tech support – Adobe Flash made its CPU overheat, and its shitty self-ventilating was just no good. by 2009-10 i was no longer really using it, but it was retarded; if you tried watching youtube videos, it would overheat and shut itself down. that’s pretty piss-poor engineering for what was an over-priced laptop.

Cook called on information companies to create messaging campaigns to counter fake news. He also said governments need to take the lead with their own campaigns.

      I… just. wow.

No matter how much you hate Trump, statements like this have *got* to convince you that him or some equally detached moonbat were at *least* 1:45. Probably closer to 1:15, maybe even 1:5.

      1. DRM   8 years ago

Me, I’d like for Tim Cook to notice that for the next four years any US government anti-fake-news campaign would be run by a Trump appointee.

Gay man in New York makes the mistake of coming out as a Republican. His tolerant gay friends show him what leftist tolerance really means.

“And I hope that New Yorkers can be as open-minded and accepting of my new status as a conservative man as they’ve been about my sexual orientation.”

Dad is so proud of his son for putting a gay twist on his race-manic manifesto fantasy. I’m shveltzing.

    3. EdWuncler   8 years ago

I’ve said this many times on this board but some of the most racist shit that I’ve ever had said to me were by liberals.

The moment they find out that I am a libertarian Republican, is the moment they stop seeing me as an individual who is a black man. Instead they see at best a misguided black person and at worst an Uncle Tom.

      1. John   8 years ago

Look at the nasty horrible shit they say about Clearance Thomas or Condi Rice. And they don’t just say it, they enjoy saying it. Its like they have all this racist energy pent up inside them waiting for the proper chance to let it out.

        1. dajjal   8 years ago

Rugers for the gays and starpoints for the blacks. You with us, John?

        2. EdWuncler   8 years ago

Whether you agree with Thomas or Rice, these two lived remarkable lives and are some incredibly intelligent individuals. To see them denigrated by the Left shows their intellectual and philosophical decadence.

          1. The Fusionist   8 years ago

            “denigrated”

            Doesn’t that mean “blackened?”

            Racist!

          2. A Thinking Mind   8 years ago

Similarly Sara Palin. You’d think feminists would line up to congratulate her on what she’s accomplished in her career. To the left media, she’s a bimbo. It started off as a joke that came to be passed as reality that she’s some ditz who lucked into everything.

What a way for the tolerant left to attack a person they disagree with.

      2. waffles   8 years ago

But that means they never really saw you as a individual in the first place. You were just part of the diverse progressive collective until they found out you weren’t.

        1. EdWuncler   8 years ago

Exactly. I remember having Ayn Rand’s quote, “The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights, cannot claim to be defenders of minorities,” as a status on Facebook and a Progressive friend of mine went nuts.

He basically said that if the majority feels as though an individual does something they don’t like or agree with, then the majority is allowed to force their will on the individual. I kid you the fuck not. Oh and that the majority is always right.

The ironic part is that he is this guy who always constantly talks about racism from whites against blacks. So I asked him, “If you believe that the majority is always right, then slavery must have been okay because the majority of whites had no problem with black folks being enslaved.”

He fuckin’ lost his shit. It was great witnessing him dealing his cognitive dissonance.

          1. DiegoF   8 years ago

They might be a lost cause. I am these days a little more concerned with “libertarians” (or self-described small-government conservatives, or whatever) who treat Federalism/decentralization like anything more than a possible practical good, as something with inherent worth. I always tell them, yeah, I believe in local, decentralized government. In fact, I’m way more extreme than you! I believe in devolving power to the ultimate local authority, the individual citizen! Any lesser devolution is only to be measured by how much it furthers that goal, period.

      3. american socialist   8 years ago

Damn. Yea it is all projection on their part.

Part of me wonders if they only “care” for black people as long as they vote democrat and can give liberal an ego boost

        1. EdWuncler   8 years ago

They don’t give a shit about black folks. Just ask them about their opinion on school choice. Despite the black community overwhelmingly endorsing school choice, they do whatever they can to prevent choice from happening. Their reasoning is that the parent’s aren’t mentally or intellectually equipped to choose a school for their children.

          1. american socialist   8 years ago

Yea this was always bizzare to me and you bring up a point i had thought of.

When they say white privilege…what i have noticed it means is really white power and used to justify being paternalistic towards black people

          2. BigT   8 years ago

Their reasoning is that the parent’s aren’t mentally or intellectually equipped to choose a school for their children.

This is the nub of most of the prog positions. You aren’t smart enough to figure out for yourself what to do, so the gubbamint will just have to do it for you. (see Obamacare, Soc Security, etc) Blacks are of course a special case because of the history of slavery, Jim Crow, etc. so the progs really bend over backward to ‘help,’ but rarely see if the help is really helping. As long as they feel good about it they are satisfied.

I lived in Northern Arkansas (very close to Missouri), and I’ve seen a few actual real anti-Semite racist types. They were called The Covenant, The Sword, and the Arm of the Lord. They used to steal some of our cattle. Eventually the National Guard ended up breaking them up (in late 1984 or early 1985, during my freshman year in college). My parents and sister had a few harrowing stories of civil liberty abuses by the military during those couple of weeks.

    Wait a second…

The Government Has a $100m Lawsuit Against Lance Armstrong? And it involves the *postal service*?

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? A federal judge on Monday refused to block the government’s $100 million lawsuit against Lance Armstrong, putting the former cyclist on course for trial in a 2010 case stemming from his performance-enhancing drug use.

The lawsuit was filed by Armstrong’s former U.S. Postal Service teammate Floyd Landis. The federal government joined in 2013 after Armstrong publicly admitted he cheated to win the Tour de France seven times from 1999-2005. Armstrong was stripped of those titles and banned from competition…

Landis, himself a former doping cheat who was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title, sued Armstrong under the federal False Claims Act, alleging Armstrong and his team committed fraud against the government when they cheated while riding under the Postal Service banner….

The law allows Landis and the government to sue to get that money back and for “treble” damages, or triple the amount, and Armstrong could be forced to pay all of it. Landis stands to receive up to 25 percent of any damages awarded. ….Armstrong’s lawyers have introduced internal studies for the agency that calculated benefits in media exposure topping $100 million.

I saw on the news that some KKK recruitment literature was found on lawns in some NJ town. Of course, police were called, they are “investigating” and want anyone else who gets this shit to contact them. So, question, is upsetting literature now supposed to be reported to the cops in New Jersey? If I get some crap from Christie or Booker, am I allowed to make a big stink about it with the cops? Doesn’t the Klan have 1st amendment rights in NJ?

    1. waffles   8 years ago

There was a bit of NPR I caught yesterday where an ACLU representative gave a full throated defense of freedom of speech citing Illinois Nazis while her interviewer gave mealy-mouthed quibbles about hate speech. I’m completely fucking perplexed this is even a question. When acquaintances state “the first amendment only applies to governments” I am quickly reminded many people do not give a damn about liberty.

They always give that quote when they’re busy silencing people, either through heckler’s veto or social media piling on, etc. “First Amendment only keeps the government from restricting speech, individuals can silence whoever they want! If you say something ‘bad’ then me and all my prog friends are going to harass you until you do a proper mea culpa or flee the internet.”

      3. Ceci n'est pas un woodchipper   8 years ago

But it’s true. The 1A only applies to the government. It most certainly does not apply to private parties, and thank god for that. As it is, it, like virtually all of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, limits the powers of the government. It protects negative liberties; it does not grant positive liberties. Can you imagine a world where the Constitution imposed on the government a positive obligation to ensure that everyone’s speech was adequately heard by whatever concerned parties were determined to be relevant? Remember assemblies in high school? Imagine those in your neighborhood, enforced by police.

        1. A Thinking Mind   8 years ago

Actually no, to some extent, the government is supposed to guarantee the right of free speech for the people. They’re not supposed to force an audience for the speech, nothing like that. But if someone advertised they have a meeting or forum to discuss an issue, be it as petty and local as discussing ways to alleviate traffic around school zones, or something more formal, like a meeting of a local NAACP chapter, they need to be allowed to have that meeting.

If rioters or dissidents want to shut down the venue, the law must support it. Either they’ll take their own measures to remove the toxic element or they’ll call in law enforcement to perform the same task.

“As more than 180,000 Californians are ordered to evacuate an area that could be flooded by the failure of Oroville Dam, state officials are denying reports that they ignored safety warnings about the dam more than a decade ago.”

I was in Chico, CA (just north of the Oroville area) this morning. Driving home I was listening to the radio and was heartened to hear about all the groups and places that are offering assistance and/or temporary shelter and not just for people. There is a casino near Corning, CA that has an equestrian center and said that it can accept up to 300 horses and other large livestock. It is also has space for several hundred RVs in their parking lots. Many churches and Sikh temples in the area from Chico down to Sacramento have opened their doors; some providing food and also allowing people to bring small animals.
