Watch 84 Lumber's Pro-Immigration Commercial that Was Too Hot for Super Bowl
Donald Trump is fearful of the world, and that's a big problem for America.
During tonight's Super Bowl, 84 Lumber, a chain of building-supplies stores, ran a teaser ad about Mexican migrants moving north to the United States for work and opportunity. The first part of the ad is here and the final portion of the ad is up on YouTube and is well worth watching:
Like his full-throated embrace of trade protectionism, Donald Trump's considerable contempt for immigrants and immigration should be recognized for what it is: evidence that he fears America's best days are behind us. He may bitch and moan about so-called globalists who put everyone else's interests ahead of America's own, but only folks fighting over a static or shrinking pie think that way. As conservatives shed their reservations about Trump's lack of principles and embrace his nativist agenda as their own (see, for instance, National Review's cover story on "nationalism"), expect zero-sum thinking to proliferate on the right. Michael Moore and other lefty progs are already struggling with the fact that they agree with Trump on trade; they share a common mind that one person's gain is another's loss. Left and right have effectively given up on growth and innovation; they are arguing instead over strategies to manage decline.
Bluster aside, Trump's obsession with shutting out newcomers (including Iraqis who aided the misbegotten American adventure in that country) and renegotiating NAFTA (which actually created a level playing field among Mexico, Canada, and the United States) springs fully formed out of Christopher Lasch's The Minimal Self: Psychic Survival in Troubled Times. That is, Trump's brittle and perpetually aggrieved sense of identity isn't a sign of strength but a sign that he feels everything in the world is escaping his ability to control it. Lasch, who also wrote The Culture of Narcissism, believed that lack of economic growth in the 1970s and constant Cold War fears of annihilation had created society-wide withdrawal on both psychological and cultural levels. Americans were retreating inward, the better to pretend we could still control at least some aspects of our lives. There are many reasons to be critical of Lasch's methods and conclusions, but I think he helps explain aspects of Trump's agenda and appeal.
One of the main goals of libertarianism over the coming months will be to revive an Enlightenment belief in universalism and cosmopolitanism, and of the belief that one can (and should) be a citizen of the world and a citizen of a particular nation, culture, tradition. Trump addresses the world from a defensive crouch, one that is obsessed with fucking over the other guys before they screw you over. It's a cramped and backward-looking way to be, and it will not make America great again, though it may well take us to dark corners of our past, when we banned large swaths of the planet from our shores in the name of preserving a mythic purity.

I like how the coommercial painted coyotes as caring individuals who will accept lower payment to help the noble cause. In real life, they would be sold into the sex trade.
I remember back in Spanish class, we saw about movie about illegal aliens.
Their coyote had them hide in the engine compartment of an old pick-up truck
Was it El Norte?
Don't they catch plague from the culvert rats?
Only the sister, and only because of eeeeeeevil California ballot initiatives.
Exactly. "Reason" magazine would have us believe the coyotes are humble public servants and that no ILLEGAL ALIEN ever breaks another law after becoming and ILLEGAL ALIEN.
My last month paycheck was for 11000 dollars... All i did was simple online work from comfort at home for 3-4 hours/day that I got from this agency I discovered over the internet and they paid me for it 95 bucks every hour... This is what I do

I like how you generalize and lump all coyotes into one category.
"They're just benevolent transporters trying to make a living!"
"One of the main goals of libertarianism over the coming months will be to revive an Enlightenment belief in universalism and cosmopolitanism, and of the belief that one can (and should) be a citizen of the world and a citizen of a particular nation, culture, tradition."
The Enlightenment didn't invent that idea that you could have a local allegiance at the same time that you had a more...what's the word...universal allegiance.
"1883 Socialization also presents dangers. Excessive intervention by the state can threaten personal freedom and initiative. The teaching of the Church has elaborated the principle of subsidiarity, according to which 'a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to co- ordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good.'...
"1885 The principle of subsidiarity is opposed to all forms of collectivism. It sets limits for state intervention. It aims at harmonizing the relationships between individuals and societies. It tends toward the establishment of true international order."
Jesus, Eddie, next you'll be telling us there's nothing new under the Sun!
People have an natural affinity for preservation of themselves and others they perceive as like them. Only the privileged elite think everyone ELSE should embrace the world. Most people who agree with Reason Magazine on these issues are strong proponents of NIMBYism and practice it daily. Note that Obama did not import any "refugees" anywhere near where HE and HIS FAMILY might possibly live in the future.
Trump's a total globophobe as demonstrated by his world wide business empire (which progs like Gillespie are constantly saying creates huge conflicts of interest); his tough talk to other world leaders (omg he told are bestest friends in Australia to keep their proto terrorist refugees) and his attempt to build an alliance with Putin to thwart ISIS.
Do not confuse them with facts, their mind are made up. In order for their rhetoric to work, they have to believe that Trump is "afraid of the world". They cannot rationalize his global business network so they must ignore it.
What do I tell my daughter? That inane super bowl commercials won't alienate 70% of the customer base? That strawmen are an appropriate rhetorical device? What do I tell my daughter?
Tell her to tune out progressive bullshi if she wants to lead a happy life.
Whether progressive bullshit or conservative bullshit, it's all still bullshit. And yes, let's teach our kids that the way to make the world a better place is to tune out what the other side is saying.
Are they saying anything worth saying? Men and women are equal is what they said. Not that men and women should be treated equal or men and women should be considered equal in the workplace.
Nope. Men and women are equal. Men are not stronger on average than women. It does not matter that women can carry a baby to term inside them. It does not matter that men and women tend to tackle problems from different perspectives.
Its a bold faced lie and they expect people to accept it without any dissent.
The article mentions some kind of "diesel scandal"...are they attempting some kind of damage control?
Read the replies
Jesus, it's like a Robby article comment thread in there!
84 Lumber tweeted about how the ad represented a legal path to citizenship. The story in the ad was not.
Maybe it's a metaphor for "First secure the border. Then, increase legal immigration."
Tall fence, wide gate was the phrase I saw on forum, and that's literally what last ten seconds was about...
The whole thing was hilarious, but I lost it when the moppet pulled out the tattered US flag to cheer her momma up! That's the kind of initiative we welcome in our orphan mines. Sold!
NAFTA (which actually created a level playing field among Mexico, Canada, and the United States)
See, that's why Nick gets paid big bucks - he can write a thing so stupid not even Big Robby would think of it!
Now excuse me while I drink my milk imported from US, I have a load of soft lumber that needs driving down south!
Fucking hell, someone should take Old Man Gillespie and drop him off with the Zapatistas so they can explain to him what a 'level playing field' NAFTA gave Mexico.
Repost, but this pretty accurately sums up a lot of what's damaging Reason (and the media's) credibility at large.
Yeah. I can't even.
Of course, in reality, they wave Mexican flags every chance they get.
Yep, that Enlightenment, where everyone wanted everyone else in their countries and didn't demonize other cultures.
To be fair, French Revolution is a great marker for end of Enlightenment and beginning of Romanticism.
When, you know, worthless savage peoples invented nationalism because they couldn't appreciate how great the enlightened rule of their racial betters was. Just like today's Europe - all the problems are the fault of Slavic subhumans and Attila's demonic descendants, who just won't take directions for Germanic ubermensch.
I swear to god, had I read shit Gillespie writes in early 90s, I'd have been pro-Milosevic!
I can excuse a cosmopolitan educated in America for not knowing much about what went on and why it happened in the Balkans or 19th Century Italy--fault the education system.
But there's no excuse for someone who grew up in the home of the American Revolution for writing the crap the Gillespie just did.
Jaysus wept.
For an outfit all fired up about markets,
The groundhog ate my homework.
Best commercial was the American Petroleum Institute one. I love seeing Oil and Gas commercials that aren't apologetic or emphasizing their investments in renewables.
This was the ad.
Wow I like it. Probably more exciting than the game.
the game was pretty good. Not my hoped-for results but that's how it goes.
Yeah. I hated that those assholes ones, but you couldn't script a better game to watch (given all the twists and turns, the crazy shifts in scoring, and the historic overtime).
Darn, no sports antagonism for me this week. Shucks. There are ample opportunities in Atlanta though.
@wareagle when I watch the Pats, I say to myself...this must be how non-Bama fans watch Bama games.
Yeah, a championship game that went to overtime was totally boring.
Hooray for sport.
Oh, I see. You're one of those kind of insufferable assholes who has to let everyone know about your high horse. Let me guess, you don't own a TV, you've never been to Walmart, and the only REAL football is played on a pitch.
I love Walmart and watched TV today.
Hey, at least he didn't call it "sportsball."
Also, antisports snobs of this extreme variety are incompatible with soccer-fanship-as-cultural-signalling of that extreme variety. Very close cousins, of course, but not the same.
Some of us like both football and soccer.
Murrrkkaaaa!
Well, shit. I gotta go out and buy me some oil.
Doesn't count unless you burn it.
Fucking Pats!!!!!!!
Lol Super Bowl
Here's the thing - I want equal pay for equal work. I want it to be easier for people to immigrate and work towards a better life. But I also want to have an escape from politics, and it's becoming damn near impossible to find one without completely disengaging from popular culture, and even many friends and colleagues.
And goddam it Atlanta.
it wasn't Atlanta fault. They deflated the balls for the second half.
Atlanta deflated themselves in the second half.
What the hell happened at halftime?
Bill called Lucifer
Belichek and the Devil had a Bad Romance.
I thought Bill WAS Lucifer.
Not as powerful but more evil
You're thinking of Nick Sabah.
Fucking autocorrect
yes, I am aware of Nick Satan. I almost went with that but stayed with the Belichik theme.
Pray to the Dark Lord, Pray the your pitiful program on da Plains dies easily.
Mike M. hardest hit.
That, or we just saw proof of multiple universes, one where the Falcons played exceptionally well and the Pats sucked, and the other where the opposite happened.
At least someone else saw the inverted pentagram during Gaga's performance.
Russian hackers.
I don't know. I'm focusing on hockey. If the NFL gets fun again let me know
The worst thing is, my better nature demands I respect what New England has done. I mean, that catch by Edelman was a thing of beauty. I wish I could Judy hate them.
That catch was the intersection of preparation and opportunity. Julio's catches were things of beauty.
Google News has a new-ish "Executive Orders" news heading. Aren't you excited?
T-Mobile had the best ads. The Martha Stewert/Snoop Dog pot one and the S&M ones.
Those S&M bits were awful.
They were unexpected. I'm sure they'll get shit about them. Can of Bisque was hilarious.
The 50 Little Pieces spoof was OK, I thought. The phone sex one was shite. Beating a dead horse and not vivid enough in its message. Maybe the worst ad Super Bowl in years. (They brought Spuds's ghost back after 30 fucking years for that mediocrity?) Celebrity ads mostly shit too. Everything came across like some sort of halfass hack job, written on the cheap by a bunch of chicks and Mexicans.
Kristen Schaal is proof that women can be funny.
There was a distinct shortage of 'titty' in that.
But the muffin top doth overflow.
So, just like in The Empire Strikes Back, the bad guys soon in the end. But, just like Return of the Jedi, a new hero will emerge and lead to the defeat of the Empire (looking at you, Broncos).
*won
This one time the Rockies had the opportunity to win the World Series. I understand that ultimately it wasn't meant to be.
I've gotta say, some of you people are getting boringly predictable. Gillespie says something you don't agree with and you start whining and crying about how unfair he is and what a stupid loser poopyhead he is for saying mean things that totally aren't true. Sad.
I stand by my demand for 'more titty' in future "Too Hot for ______" videos.
Not as predictable as Gillespie.

You guys heard the man! Mix it up better! You been slacking on the Robby hair jokes lately! The proper balance is delicate.
...there was a meeting? Did anyone take notes? i feel like i should have seen a memo or something. or a sidebar on C-Span.
Papal Bull is coming, Nick was just kind enough to give us a sneak peek.
Papal Bull, wasn't he the chief of that Catholic Indian tribe?
(why yes, yes I am going to burn for that one.)
Interesting. I don't imagine 84 Lumber's customer base skews left.
Though construction companies probably do favor illegal labor.
it's a bit like the stupid Bud commercial, because back then one group of white people was always telling another group of white people to "get out of our country." I'm sure the white wine and brie crowd is, as we type, rushing the stores for Bud.
...which makes no sense. The US has been heavily German since the founding. A lot of Americans historically were native German speakers. That bullshit was made up out of whole cloth.
A/B don't care. They are simply trying to chase the hipster/virtue signalling crowd because they have no one else.
That little girl is old enough to swing a hammer.
You give your orphans hammers? Does that work better than tears at polishing monocles?
Have you ever had any construction done? Who do you think builds houses in this country?
Hitler?
My white, redneck, independent contractor father in law and his white redneck payed under the table underlings.
Mexicans aren't the only people who will work under the table.
White, black, latino, asian....
Who do YOU think builds houses in this country?
I don't know where you live, but around here it is predominantly Latinos. At least 80%, I bet.
You know, back when Virginia Postrel was in charge, Reason wouldn't give out free advertising to a lumber company without getting some money in return.
Let's let the whole freakin' world in!
Agreed. America should have more people in it who think women are basically property, that gays should get thrown from atop tall buildings, and that honor killings are totes legit. Freedom! Liberty!
Oh, and I haven't ever really payed attention to Lady Gaga, but that was pretty good as Super Bowl halftime shows go.
I think a lot of people told her to avoid politics. Those people didn't count on the commercials to pick up the slack...
Yeah but it was so obvious that they were avoiding politics that it felt political. Gah!
She was the musical quest on SNL once. She did a nice little number while playing the piano. I enjoyed it. She was great on American Horror last season as well.
Bill Clinton y Juan Valdez estan narcotraficantes
You mean it's not coffee beans in the saddle baskets Juan's little burro?
Here comes the flood of butt-hurt conservatives who don't understand what a libertarian is.
They loved Reason when they criticize Obama, but not Dear Leader Trump.
To be fair, it's hard to figure out what a libertarian is from this Gillespie article.
Its officially Sunday now! with less than an hour to spare.
Welcome to every article ever, Jahgro.
Since when is trump a conservative?
I've made $64,000 so far this year working online and I'm a full time student. Im using an online business opportunity I heard about and I've made such great money. It's really user friendly and I'm just so happy that I found out about it. Heres what I do,

The world is full of totalitarian regimes and dictators. European social welfare states are falling apart. Immigrants wanting to come to the US often don't speak English, have no job skills, and no understanding of democracies and markets.
Yes, Donald Trump is fearful of the world, as well he should be. Take it from an immigrant: I came to the US because it's different, and I don't want the US to deteriorate into the kind of shitholes that you find almost everywhere else on this planet and that I tried to get away from.
Nor do I want the US to squander its wealth and power in a futile attempt to democratize and liberate the rest of the world, and attempt that will not succeed, and will likely cause more harm even to the people it intends to help.
Pretty much. It's amazing the number of immigrants I have met in my life, or read/seen interviews with who are completely unashamed to say stuff like this that many native born Americans are too terrified to mention. Aside from fearing socialist tendencies a bit from some places, that's why I am 110% ok with opening up the flood gates to people with:
1. SOME sort of decent skill set for employment. Whether it's an engineering degree, programmer, medical doctor, or even just skilled labor like being a welder or whatever.. SOMETHING. The USA has LITERALLY ZERO use for more unskilled labor. We can't even employ the native born slackers, let alone importing millions more from abroad. It's just idiotic when we have a welfare state, but even if we didn't we STILL wouldn't have anything productive for them to do. Open borders are a great utopian idea, and I don't think government will manage immigration well (they fuck up everything), but some things like "We don't need millions more illiterate janitors for the labor force" are pretty easy and obvious to figure out.
2. They're from a semi-decent country of some sort, with some semblance of decent social order, and that they have a basic understanding of democratic/republican ideas. Even Europeans with all their wrongheaded ways of doing things essentially get the idea, they just need to be done learned all 'bout that there Constitution and the limits it places on our government here.
That's about it. I think if we allowed almost unlimited skilled immigration from non dodgy countries it would be fine. Let's keep the brain drain flowing into the USA by all means! But unskilled labor from sketchy places, not so much. Let the Mexican doctors or programmers in, but we don't really need millions more people with 6th grade educations.
I don't want to sound like a dick or whatever, I feel sorry for these people... But it's not really going to help anybody, least of all the 300+ million people already here, to turn America into a 3rd world shit hole. The rest of the world is coming up anyway, so if they just sit tight and bust ass in their own countries their standard of living is probably going up at a great clip anyway.
If we were being flooded with white shoe lawyers, tenured college professors, upper management types, ersatz celebrities, and media talking heads/pundits all willing to work for 60% of the going rate then rest assured the story lines would be different.
Yeah I imagine a lot of people in said professions WOULD be a bit peeved... But I think the overall results for the economy would be great! Well maybe not for THAT mix of people, but certainly for doctors, engineers etc, which would still piss people off. Look no further than IT guys bitching about the imported Indian programmers.
The way I think about it is like this: The world is not zero sum... But it isn't infinite sum either. Low skill labor just doesn't help much with making the pie bigger in America in the 21st century. We here all have a lot of faith in the market to sort things out, and on a global scale I think it perhaps is in fact ordering itself in a way that is creating the most global prosperity... But on the national level I do think there are winners and losers in many areas. Hence people have always been ok with top down planning of things to a certain degree.
While I don't like the idea on principle, I think in some areas like immigration certain aspects can be soooo obvious for what needs to be done that perhaps something should be done. Try to keep it minimally invasive, but it's reaaally apparent we don't need any more unskilled laborers in this country... So maybe just "have some kind of skill" versus none as the criteria. Make immigrating legally easier, and enforce the laws to keep out the rabble like the chick and her kid in the stupid video that's supposed to tug at my heart strings.
" But I think the overall results for the economy would be great!"
Guess you missed the whole principles vs outcomes discussion.
I think I did actually catch that one... But I'll take what I can get. Also open borders are not one of the principles I am really 110% behind anyway. I've never claimed to be a totally principled hard line libertarian. I agree with 98% of it in theory, but in practice I don't think some things are that practical either in the world that exists, or in some cases even in an "ideal" world. For a truly hardcore libertarian world to exist basically everybody would have to be on board... And that's never gonna happen.
At the end of the day it's no different than a pinko dreaming about the perfect communist system that will never exist. The main difference being the closer you get to liberty in the real world the better things work, but the closer to get to communism the more f-ed up. That's why I'm libertarian-ish instead of a stupid commie.
I'm all for moving the vast majority of laws very far towards the libertarian end of the scale, but I can accept plenty of fluff and/or compromise if need be... Which looking at the world as it exists it would NEED TO BE. I'd be happy with a USA that's just a lot closer to its small government roots as that seems like about the best case realistic scenario to me.
Between now and then I'll take what I can get, principled or not. At least I'm man enough to admit it.
I suppose I should add that there are times where the principled argument should be made, but there are times where I think it can be ignored too. It's a case by case decision for me based off of what I think might actually fly in the real world as it presently exists.
I think gay marriage was one of the things discussed in the other discussion. I'd say on that one getting gay marriage made legal is the way to go, despite that one is not fighting the principled fight that the government shouldn't be involved in the first place. Why? Because realistically government isn't getting out of marriage anytime soon.
Now if we're talking about fighting to abolish all licensing requirements for hair braiding... I say take the principled stance because I think that is a winnable fight.
The real world is messy, and 99% of people don't operate off of strict universal principles... So do what you can in the best way that's feasible on a case by case basis. That's the way the left has eroded liberty, so I don't see why it couldn't work going the other way.
Way I figure it the worst that could happen would be not very bad (I honestly can't think of any "downsides" other than driving up the wages on the low end a bit, but just admitting there could be some), and the best that could happen would be putting millions of low skill Americans back to work while growing viable parts of the economy with the skilled immigrants. If enough skilled immigrants created enough new wealth we MIGHT even begin to have a shortage of unskilled labor again and could start letting in half illiterate Mexicans once more while still not having millions of Americans on the dole!
As for the gripes of the high skilled American workers about their pay being cut/stagnating? I'd say it's the breaks. American labor is already really expensive, and if you're talking about knocking 10-30% or whatever off of 100-500K a year salaries it's really not so bad, especially since IMO it would be a "making the pie bigger" type of situation. It would probably help the country be more competitive globally, and I wouldn't shed too many tears over somebody's salary going flat for a few years at 150K or whatever. It's a lot less of a concern for the national economy (if it's a growing pie scenario) versus millions going on the dole for not being able to get ANY employment.
Cosmopolitanism is fine, among people who have accepted, and live according to, the Enlightenment ideals, and as long as it is voluntary.
It doesn't mean "let anybody who wants to into our social welfare state".
It doesn't mean "let anybody who wants to into our social welfare state".
Paranoia about rare treasures is fucking ridiculous. Everyone knows the goddamn planet has been free of oppression for centuries. Liberty's so fucking cool and grand she'll gangbang a dark alley swarming with nobodies with nary a goddamn concern about her shit being fucked up.
Freedom is like oxygen and just as plentiful. Let it ring itself silly like a Pollyanna belly-dancing her jiggly parts into the oncoming glow of raggedy duty, submission, and political penance. Fuck yea!
Fuck political awareness! Fuck situational attentiveness about the state of liberty flustered at the yawning span of massive organizational plunder! Nothing about the macabre of history proves a thing in the now!
Praise blindness, lack of awareness, and the anti-conceptualism... and praise be-to-fucking-gods and Zorro that qualms about the gentle clever closing of freedom doors is something no rational man or woman should ever think about. Whew! It's 2017 and Reason's on the job taking care of the goddamn liberty business and all.
Reason lacks the conceptual objectivity to accurately assess dominant authoritarian bellwethers that exist with proven potential to ravage individual and national autonomy.
Trump's kingly endeavors are as much a cause for alarm as the vast wholesale osmosis of uncatalogued immigrants who seethe with minds inculcated with political/religious conditioning anathema to the mores of a free society.
It truly is one thing to commit to a personal and social empathy toward the plight of many refugees and immigrants who are indeed crushed between the granite disregard of collapsing existence.
However, it is an outrage in a world burgeoning perpetually with despots and religious/political violence that empathy towards the suffering plunder objective understanding of existential threats to a free society.
As long as blood pours from innocent bodies shattered by the ultra-murderous, borders without accountability are a festering wound succulent to the frenzy of violent organisms.
And so it goes- Reason's obedience to corporate interests reigns supreme to the cause of liberty.
Both poetically written AND accurate! 🙂
Nick's gone full-retard for open borders and the AEI form of "Free Trade", you'd never know this guy spent a day in Buffalo from the nonsense he's now offering up on regular basis. Other than his recent interview with Randy Barnett (who unlike Nick, has the courage and balls to admit how sadly wrong he was on Trump) Nick's off the rails and a long way from ever coming back.
Come back to your senses Nick, we miss you!!
The commercial is nothing more than pandering to leftist anti-Trumpers, much like Nick and crew have been doing since the election.
America already has enough Illegal immigrants in the last 30 years, and certainly don't need more. It will take years to assimilate them, in a world with decreasing need for agricultural and service workers due to mechanization, and computerization. Too many American minorities don't need more competition. California alone spends over $25 billion dollars directly on them. American kids going to school, getting a substandard education because too many resources spent on kids of Illegals not speaking English.
Reason comment threads have been infected with Trumptarded cons nearly as obnoxious as The Federalist's comment threads.
Anybody else remember when this used to be a libertarian hangout?

I do all my own 'handyman' stuff around the house. As a result I'm at the home-improvement stores at least a few times a month. In SE PA, the customer base is over 50% Hispanic at Home Depot and Lowes....and well above that if you limit it to the 'raw material' sections of lumber, pipe fittings, and roofing. I haven't been to an 84 in years, but I suspect that commercial was a direct play to their customer base.
From my perspective the handyman/contractor areas are majority Hispanic these days. 84 is just playing to that.
Facebook gives you a great opportunity to earn 98652$ at your home.If you are some intelligent you makemany more Dollars.I am also earning many more, my relatives wondered to see how i settle my Life in few days thank GOD to you for this...You can also make cash i never tell alie you should check this I am sure you shocked to see this amazing offer...I'm Loving it!!!!

Open borders would destroy America....Imagine if we allowed 750,000,000 Muslims to immigrate and 500,000,000 South Asians and another 500,000,000 Chinese and 750,000,000 Africans
it would not be a libertarian paradise.
