In an interview on Hardball Thursday evening, Trump counselor Kellyanne Conway defended his executive order on immigration by citing Barack Obama's response to the "Bowling Green Massacre," an incident "most people don't know [about] because it didn't get covered." It was not covered, however, because it is not a thing that actually happened.

  • White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told a press briefing Thursday that Trump was putting Iran "on notice" because Iran had attacked a U.S. naval ship; in actuality, suspected Houthi rebels in Yemen (a group loosely linked to the Iranian government, but definitely distinct from it) attacked a Saudi naval vessel.
  • U.S. Senators voted 52-48 Friday morning to cut off debate about whether Betsy DeVos should be confirmed as the next education secretary, clearing the way for a final confirmation vote next week.
  • A man with a machete was shot by a French soldier as he attempted to enter the Louvre in Paris, in what police head Michel Cadot called "an attack by a person … who represented a direct threat and whose actions suggested a terrorist context."
  • Uber CEO Travis Kalanick has quit Donald Trump's economic council, according to the Associated Press. Kalanick told Uber employees Thursday that "joining the group was not meant to be an endorsement of the president or his agenda but unfortunately it has been misinterpreted to be exactly that."
  • The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) finds that teen cannabis consumption "has not changed since legalization either in terms of the number of people using or the frequency of use among users."
  • Eleven people were arrested after protesters stormed a room on the New York University campus where conservative pundit and former Vice editor Gavin McInnnes was speaking.
  • A Georgia bill would ban universities from initiating sexual assault disciplinary hearings unless a criminal investigation had been launched.

I just saw this in one of my feeds and thought of you:

"What's the greatest thing about Switzerland?"

I left for a while. Between being super-busy at work and just getting fed up with the hyperbolic Trump pants-shitting, I found that my time was better spent elsewhere. I pop back in from time to time (now, for example) but plan to spend a lot less time around here.

Still appreciate the commenters, of course. But the staff here has almost entirely lost its mind.

The dismissive tone on the response to Sloopy is what pisses me off most.

The TDS stuff will calm down, but that was a kind of a "Fuck you guys, you don't matter."

          1. Mr. Flanders   8 years ago

Kalanick told Uber employees Thursday that "joining the group was not meant to be an endorsement of the president or his agenda but unfortunately it has been misinterpreted to be exactly that."

The only way to engage Donald Trump in dialogue is broken windows and a dumpster fire. Duh.

    1. Fire Dalmia (DoM5k)   8 years ago

Anything short of that will be interpreted as a vigorous endorsement.

    2. prolefeed   8 years ago

Apparently leftists will boycott a business if their CEO tries to give economic lessons masquerading as advice, to a president who is functionally illiterate about economics and who is threatening to start a disastrous trade war -- and if said trade war happens, will blame it on their political opponents who didn't do the boycott.

Have the Cosmo's deigned to write a post about the beat down Sloopy's mom took from some local cops yet?

    1. tarran   8 years ago

No. And it's not happening according to an email from KMW to Sloopy because "it's not right for Reason".

Count me among the people bailing. Because I want to read a news magazine that it *is* right for.

      1. Swiss Servator   8 years ago

You too, tarran? Tonio is looking at a place for us to go to that might be, you know, libertarian. Others are working on another one too.

I look forward to seeing it. I really don't like the idea of losing touch with some of you guys.

But I think Reason and I are through. I've been getting better writing from FEE for a long time anyway.

              FEE?

There's still Mises.org, but the comment section isn't as good since it's Discus based.

              1. Chipper Morning Wood   8 years ago

Kinsella single-handedly wrecked the mises.org forum. It's an echo chamber mostly. And considering the old Christian fuddy-daddies associated with that organization, I seriously doubt they would tolerate the sort of crass humor that is required to maintain sanity in this unfree world.

                1. Not a True MJG   8 years ago

That's unfortunate, CMW. For an insular institution, the Mises forum was quite diverse and interesting for several years. You could get into actual debates that weren't just Rothbardian or Hoppean circle-jerks.

          2. Groovus Maximus   8 years ago

            I'm done too, tarran.

For all the Reasonoids seeking second opinions, and the three I've treated in meatspace, I thank you for the privilege of doing so. If I am needed, don't hesitate to email me.

Paraphrased from my favourite movie and a shout out to a Reasonoid of old, Hercules Triathlon Savinien:

Final report of the commercial starship Nostromo erstwhile Reason, Dr. Groovus Maximus reporting. The other members of the crew Commetariat , RC Dean, Banjos, Sloopy, Lord Humungus, Riven, Hamster of Doom, Los Doyers, and tarran, are gone. Blog and threads destroyed. I should reach the United States in May to meet with the board, provided the Russians don't invade Odessa and otherwise stay in the Eastern Donets'k Oblast'. With a little luck, Dr. ZG will love the USA so much we will apply for her to have medical residency and maybe practice medicine in the USA with her husband. This is Dr. Groovus Maximus DO, last survivor of the Nostromo The Commentariat, signing off.

Come on, cat. And take care P Brooks.

Just visiting. I have to appear before the medical board, and Mama Maximus can finally meet her grandchildren in person instead of on Skype, before she passes on (her health is declining).

It's just for a couple of weeks and a family vacay to boot. I hope to meet Reasonoids in TX, AZ, and CA. Maybe MA, but not likely.

          Long-time lurker, first-time commenter here.

Sorry to see so many of the commentariat leaving, although I can't say I blame them. For the past year, they've been the only thing keeping me coming back. I was another one of those people who thought reducing my annual contribution might make the powers that be reconsider their pants shitting. I know they are beholden to the primary patrons of the Reason Foundation, but they should know they aren't winning any hearts and minds by becoming "Vox light: now with Disqus!"

If Tonio or the others do get another place going please do link it publicly. The SugarFree stories alone are too valuable to be limited to private eyes only.

      2. VG Zaytsev   8 years ago

Sounds like an admission that they on,y care about police abuse stories to the extent that they benefit Thr Narrative.

A long time commentarian's mom who got a public beatdown from a cop for trying to give emergency medical care at a high school basketball game. It's the kind of thing Reason would have covered in the past, before they came to the conclusion that the only newsworthy police brutality stories worth their time are ones that further the Black Lives Matter program.

U.S. Senators voted 52-48 Friday morning to cut off debate about whether Betsy DeVos should be confirmed as the next education secretary, clearing the way for a final confirmation vote next week.

Seems like a party line vote, but wait!

    1. Konima   8 years ago

Claiming that there was a Bowling Green massacre is pretty hilarious. When it comes to PR, the biggest difference between the Trump and Obama admins is that the Obama admin seemed to at least attempt to make their lies believable. I think the lesson that Trump and co took away from getting elected was that you don't have to put much effort into lying. The people who are fall for the lies are going to fall for them regardless of whether they're well thought out or not.

      1. Konima   8 years ago

        Ooops, wrong place.

      2. Fire Dalmia (DoM5k)   8 years ago

Nah, Barry's lies were just as transparent. It's just that the media took any and all proclamations from him as the word of God.

        1. Konima   8 years ago

I dunno. Talking about a fake massacre is a high bar. If the Obama admin said something as silly, I'd like to know about it because it would be pretty hilarious and I like funny things.

            1. Konima   8 years ago

But the YouTube video existed, right? At least that becomes a he said, she said type of deal. That was also said as events were unfolding, so it's a smart move to deploy a lie during that time period. That's still not as impressive as making something up that happened months to years ago.

Imagine how wrapped up in politics people would be if it was actually exciting in even the smallest of ways.

    1. UnCivilServant   8 years ago

Politics isn't supposed to be exciting. Politicians are supposed to be so restrained that nothing within their purview can cause agitation.

The higher the stakes and the more rushed the judgement, the worse things are.

      1. Konima   8 years ago

I think that almost every other Republican candidate would have won by a large margin. I think the Democrats would have won by a large margin if they nominated someone else as well. Trump fell into the perfect storm. Sad!

          Larger*

        2. prolefeed   8 years ago

I don't think that's necessarily the case. Trump won the critical Rust Belt states by pandering to economic illiteracy and promising to start a trade war. The other R candidates mostly seemed too sensible to steal that from the D playbook. Dunno what states they could have picked up in place of PA, MI, and WI.

          1. Konima   8 years ago

You underestimate how many people were "choosing the lesser of two evils." A lot of people really, really disliked Hillary. A lot of people really, really disliked Trump. It's just that more people disliked Clinton, at least in the states that mattered.

    A grown man wrote this:

    The Darkest Super Bowl

It starts with a story about him going to church because he feels bad about Trump, but then he snaps at his daughter and cries outside of church because Trump.

    Continuing:

Things are NOT going smoothly right now. Right now everything is deeply fucked, and to willfully ignore it is either impossible or irresponsible. The last thing I need is the NFL trotting out a showy display of allegiance both to the flag and to its own, relentless tunnel vision. The whole thing feels tone deaf at best and passive-aggressive at worst ? a tacit demand that you sit there and adore all this pageantry, or else.

Again, I'm sorry about all this. The last thing I want is to sit here like some goth nihilist dipshit and lecture everyone, and douse a seemingly festive occasion in cold piss. I wanna snap out of it. I want EVERYONE to snap out of it. I want America to wake up in a fevered sweat and realize what it's done and rush to un-fuck everything before it's too late, if it isn't already.

    What Is the Democratic Party?

The popular progressive understanding of the Republican party and conservative movement is something like this: It is, at heart, a conspiracy of corporate oligarchs who use a collection of so-called social issues ? religion, bigotry, racial resentment, anti-immigrant sentiment ? to stir up the rubes in support of its own parochial economic agenda, tricking them into "voting against their own interests" in the popular progressive phrase. Wall Street guys pulling the strings and writing the checks, foot-washing snake-handlers manning the barricades. This isn't really true, of course, as anybody who ever has spent any time around actual Republican politicians or conservative activists knows. But might something similar actually be true of the Democratic party?

The phone base had been wired to unexploded bombs buried in a nearby road."

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told a press briefing Thursday that Trump was putting Iran "on notice" because Iran had attacked a U.S. naval ship; in actuality, suspected Houthi rebels in Yemen (a group loosely linked to the Iranian government, but definitely distinct from it) attacked a Saudi naval vessel.

The White House press corps wanted to know what being put "on notice" entailed, and Spicer responded by claiming that Iran's government took actions against a U.S. naval vessel, which would be an act of war. "I think General Flynn was really clear yesterday that Iran has violated the Joint Resolution, that Iran's additional hostile actions that it took against our Navy vessel are ones that we are very clear are not going to sit by and take," he said. "I think that we will have further updates for you on those additional actions."

Major Garrett of CBS News quietly corrected him, saying "a Saudi vessel," and Spicer then responded almost inaudibly: "Sorry, thank you, yes a Saudi vessel. Yes, that's right." He did not in any way address his false claim that it was an Iranian attack, however.

    They all look the same.

Yale keeping its "preferred first name" policy, despite misuse. Somehow the school seems shocked that students are treating it as a joke.

The new policy ? which was announced in a Jan. 17 email to the Yale community and met with widespread approval from the student body ? allows students to alter their first names on email addresses, student identification cards, online directories and other official Yale documents by completing a short form on the Student Information Systems website. Students can complete a name change regardless of whether they have legally changed their name.

Following the implementation of the policy, Yale College Dean Jonathan Holloway told the News that he was aware of instances in which the policy was misused, adding that administrators were "surprised" by some of the name-change choices people were making.

One student, Karl Notturno '17 changed his preferred first name to "God Emperor," attracting criticism on the Facebook group "Overhead at Yale." Several students viewed his actions as mocking a policy widely regarded as a step toward greater gender inclusivity on campus.

"We expected better from Yale students," Holloway said. "We expected more maturity."

When it comes to PR, the biggest difference between the Trump and Obama admins is that the Obama admin seemed to at least attempt to make their lies believable. Howard Stern says presidency will be 'detrimental' to Trump's mental health

During Wednesday's episode of his eponymous radio show, Stern said he doesn't think running the country is "going to be a healthy experience" for Trump, whom he considers a longtime friend even though their political beliefs are very different.

"I personally wish that he had never run," Stern said. "I told him that because I actually think this is something that is going to be detrimental to his mental health too, because he wants to be liked, he wants to be loved. He wants people to cheer for him."

Your obsession with turning his appearance into an indicator of mental health issues says more about you than him.

You're either a part of Trump's PR team, or simply deficient mentally.

Yes yes, childish strawman about how you're either stupid or a Trump supporter if I don't accept your idiotic argumentation. You've done this enough times, guess what, it's just reflective of your inability to actually make a coherent point. You make an idiotic argument, then scream that if people don't accept it unquestioningly they're "THE OTHER" or stupid.

I don't need you to personally talk to your shitty Canadian psychologists, friend. We have a wealth of more accurate information at our fingertips, and it's only seconds away if you're interested.

Maybe this is a matter of life experience. I've been exposed to people who deal with issues, such as body dysmorphia, and have had conversations with them regarding it.

Now you've moved the goalposts. I'm supposed to employ diagnostic techniques? It sounds as if you can only be swayed by me hiring a psychologist to go and diagnose him in person.

Nativist condescension, the quality of your statements continue. The fact that you think unsourced, not peer reviewed WebMD articles are 'more accurate' than licensed professionals (who are *gasp* dirty foreigners) says a lot.

I'm actually saying do this amazing thing called "make an actually good argument". Your entire argument is based on a shallow, lazy analysis of his appearance, where you openly admit an emotional bias. And then you demand that everyone accept it or they're all stupid or Trump supporters. That's a bad and unconvincing argument, and could easily be improved, but you insist that it's the only one you're going to make.

                    1. Konima   8 years ago

This is no longer challenging. You don't know what you're talking about, but you're too dim to realize it. This phenomena is known as the Dunning-Kruger effect. You would think that, being the one frothing at the mouth for sources, you would be volunteering your own. No, you think the solution is do go down the road and speak to a licensed professional whose opinion you think the authoritative one for some arbitrary reason.

I openly admit an emotion bias where exactly?

People who stick their necks out for Trump to the extent that you do are generally sycophants of one shade or another. I can't even imagine what it must feel like to be compelled to expend as much energy as you are defending a politician as you are. I admit, your form of mental illness is one that I have little knowledge of.

Also, your masked slipped without you realizing it. You trust a "licensed professional" over the bevvy of knowledge available to you. You're no libertarian.

      2. prolefeed   8 years ago

For our earliest presidents, the longevity effect was especially pronounced. The first eight leaders of the U.S. lived on average 79.8 years, yet life expectancy at birth for men in the 18th and early 19th centuries was under 40. Some presidents survived an exceptionally long time: Gerald Ford died at 93.5 years, Ronald Reagan at 93.3, John Adams at 90.7, and Herbert Hoover at 90.2. All currently living presidents have already exceeded their life expectancy, or are likely to do so.

If it wasn't for that "pissing off crazy people enough that they want to kill you" thing, being president is actually quite good for your health. Best health care ever. They ain't being shoved into the Obamacare or VA plans that the peons get.

        1. Tyler.C Sloopy's mom matters   8 years ago

Those are using wrong life expectancy stats. It was so low due to infant mortality. Life expectancy given that you made it past infancy (a pre req for being president) was much much higher

          1. Gadfly   8 years ago

True, and while I don't have the exact stats I know that life expectancy at the age of majority before the advance of 20th century medicine was generally somewhere in the 60s, so the Presidents still did outperform expectations (of course, for a true comparison you would have to compare life expectancies of the rich, not the average person, but I don't think they have those stats).

Another coworker said Branham once threw a cheeseburger at Suttner after he made it incorrectly.

Trump to take steps rolling back financial regulations

In two executive actions, Trump plans to direct his administration to evaluate regulatory action taken by his predecessor, Barack Obama, with an eye toward eliminating what his advisers say are burdensome rules on financial services firms and consumers.
He'll also force the delay of an Obama-era rule that required retirement advisers to act in their clients' best interests.

And before you hem an haw about how that "just isn't so", think a bit about where the money to pay for filling out all the forms to comply with the regulations comes out of.....customer profits.

Former Norway PM held at Washington airport over 2014 visit to Iran

Bondevik, who is the president the Oslo Centre, a human rights organisation, said he was placed in a room with travellers from the Middle East and Africa who were also facing extra scrutiny.

Federal utility TVA going to trial over pollution claims

In 2015, state environmental officials informed Albert Hudson, whose home is near the plant, that his well water met U.S. Environmental Protection Agency drinking water standards. But they also said the water showed levels of the harmful chemical hexavalent chromium ? typically resulting from an industrial process ? were slightly above EPA risk levels.

But Brooks said monitoring data show no impact on river water from plant operations.

Additionally, he said, the utility tested Hudson's well again and it met drinking water standards for Tennessee, save for unrelated fecal coliform. He also said there are other potential sources of the hexavalent chromium, including natural occurrences.

Will Lady Gaga's politics take center stage at the Super Bowl?

Lady Gaga says performing at the Super Bowl half time show has been a lifelong dream. But the buzz surrounding the performance lately has been all about whether or not the singer will allow her politics to take center stage at the show.
A petition posted on Change.org, which has garnered about 2,400 signatures, calls for the pop superstar to be removed as the halftime entertainer because of her political outspokenness. Creator J. Stephen writes that because of Gaga's involvement in another petition that called for the Electoral College to reverse course on Trump's presidential win, the 30-year-old singer is "completely undeserving of such a platform as the Super Bowl."

I'm more concerned that she won't wear a meat suit and have crazy set designs that make no sense. Which is what made Katy Perry's show so entertaining with the sound off.

The only good that comes from Trump being in charge is that some focus is going into how the war on terror is fought, however it is very disappointing how, because Trump is a dirty twat, how it seems like everyone instantly believes the grandfather's recounting of the events.

It's not really about what we are doing but who is doing it.

    3. Fire Shikha   8 years ago

Oh my God. Stop being a Trump apologist. When Obama killed civilians it was done in a humane way. The drones were super 'woke' and before they killed anyone they checked their aerial privilege.

Either way, shut up! He's not president anymore so citing the media's double standard doesn't count because this is literally fascism or something, etc.

      1. Tyler.C Sloopy's mom matters   8 years ago

At some point it does get trying to cute the double standards because it doesn't change anyone's mind, because in the end it isn't supposed to. All you are doing is calling someone out for being a hypocrite, and they can then easily say, "I've changed" and boom you can't argue against them because the underlying point you agree with. All you feel now is frustration that a group of like-minded hypocrites are going to be okay with the contortions these people make. Then you realize that we live in a main of hypocrites and media bud does not matter to change people's minds.

Yeah, I find it really ironic that they're suddenly super-interested in 1984 given (1) the most harrowing part of the book was the appendix about Newspeak, which bears striking similarities to the PC movement, and (2) Barry was the king of Orwellian quotes (Kinetic Military Action, anyone?) and shoving unfortunate details down the memory hole.

Personally, I expect they'll draw all the wrong lessons from it.

    Nordstrom Dumping Ivanka Trump Brand

Gregg Popovich opens up on Black History Month, white privilege and 'our national sin'

As has often been the case of late when asked for his view on political and social topics beyond the boundaries of the hardwood ? like the election of President Donald Trump in November, last month's Women's March following Trump's inauguration, the administration's introduction of "alternative facts" into the national discourse and the chaotic rollout of the executive order banning refugees and immigrants from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S., for example ? the San Antonio Spurs head coach spoke freely, and at some length.

    1. american socialist   8 years ago

Wtf is up with him? Good coach but dear lord give the preening a rest

    2. Free Society   8 years ago

His views are so well thought out and original, no wonder he can't keep silent. These views need to be heard, I've never seen anyone argue that Donald Trump is racist and society is racist and the barista at Starbucks is racist and your dog is racist. I HAD NO IDEA THIS WAS SUCH A PROBLEM OMG

    3. Basketball Uber Alles, Jr.   8 years ago

I've been a Spurs fan since I'm seven years old, and I can't wait until that douche is gone.

Great, great coach - but I suppose he's yet another person who assumes his mastery in one area makes him wise in others.

Hawaii Republican Leader, Vocal in Trump Opposition, Ready to Leave GOP

"What ended up being very problematic for me was that my caucus and others said, 'If you want to stay in leadership, then you need to make a commitment to not criticize the president for the remainder of his term,'" Fukumoto said. "And with what we've been seeing in the news with the different executive orders coming out every day, I didn't believe I could make that commitment."

    1. prolefeed   8 years ago

She's in a swing district (to be fair, almost every Republican in the Hawaii House not from Hawaii Kai is in a swing district), and is probably thinking of joining the list of former Republicans who switched parties and had a much easier time getting reelected from then on, such as Mike Gabbard.

  52. The Late P Brooks   8 years ago

Somehow Obama being presented with a planned raid and saying "go" is entirely different than Trump saying "go". They make it sound like the President is out there with the boat crew giving orders to SEALS.

Some fucking jackass on PBS was whining about how the briefing (which "normally" would have been held in the situation room) was conducted during some sort of dinner meeting. With, of course, the same cast of characters who would have attended in any case.

"Now, it's impossible to be certain, but what if they had held that briefing in the proper manner and setting? Would the outcome have been different? We'll never know."

    *shakes head sorrowfully*

    2. paranoid android   8 years ago

So what is the worse crime; Trump continuing to illegally deploy the military in countries we are not at war with, spilling American blood and wasting American treasure for questionable gains with no regard for the cost to human life, or the media being big meanie hypocrites who wouldn't criticize Obama the same way?

      1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

        Can both be worse?

      2. american socialist   8 years ago

The post above has nothing to do with what you brought up ....which is a valid point.

        However

The post above was talking about pbs lamenting how briefing was in a different room which may have affected mission.

So not sure why you are posing this question here

        1. paranoid android   8 years ago

It wasn't specifically to criticize Brooks. I've just been seeing a somewhat odd trend in comments about this story to the effect of "Why is everyone on Trump's back about it?" as if the damage caused by these military actions is no longer the President's responsibility.

          1. american socialist   8 years ago

I think it has to do with at the annoyance on what the media focuses on.

What YOU brought up is what the discussion should be about imo.

What the media is focusing on is a distraction...whether in a particular room or civilians killed which is a part of war.

The issue should be on why even there in first place like you mentioned

Florida Man parks truck on top of car to prevent (other) Florida Man from retrieving gun in road rage case.

The victim's girlfriend screamed that there was a gun in the truck in an attempt to stop the attack when her boyfriend was unable to grab Aponte's hand. The girlfriend did not actually have a gun, police said.

Aponte told the family, "I'll show you a real gun," and then started to walk toward his vehicle. Traffic prevented the truck driver from moving forward, so instead, he backed up his truck and parked it on top of the Camry, so Aponte wouldn't get the gun and cause further harm to his family, police said.

I'm thinking of starting a GoFundMe to buy this young father a pistol.

Kristen, since you specifically asked the other day, Family Maximus is fine in Odessa which is much further west of all the fighting and bombing (though the occasional demonstration in the city can be a little wild).

Donets'k is a war zone now, we were there until 2015. If you see in the news that ports on the Black Sea are being overrun or bombed into oblivion, then you should worry. Otherwise, all is well.

      Take care, Kristen.

"White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told a press briefing Thursday that Trump was putting Iran "on notice" because Iran had attacked a U.S. naval ship; in actuality, suspected Houthi rebels in Yemen (a group loosely linked to the Iranian government, but definitely distinct from it) attacked a Saudi naval vessel."

He quickly corrected himself about it being a Saudi vessel.

"Linked" but "distinct" may or may not make much sense in the case of the Iranians and their proxy armies.

Since elements of what eventually coalesced into Hezbollah attacked our Marines in 1983, Hezbollah has generally avoided specifically targeting the United States. I don't believe anyone thinks that is because of the warmness in Hezbollah's heart or because they don't think of the United States as their enemy. The reason Hezbollah hasn't specifically targeted the United States is because they're a proxy for Iran, and Iran fears that if Hezbollah attacked the United States, the United States would rightly retaliate against Iran.

Hezbollah--and certain Houthi rebel groups--may be "linked" but "distinct" from Iran, but that doesn't mean Iran shouldn't be held responsible for what their proxies do. For honesty's sake, Iran is engaged in a proxy war in Yemen with Saudi Arabia.

I've just been seeing a somewhat odd trend in comments about this story to the effect of "Why is everyone on Trump's back about it?" as if the damage caused by these military actions is no longer the President's responsibility.

I agree. I'm not defending Trump, I'm just pointing out the gross malfeasance of the media's suddenly rediscovering their horror at the thought of the death and destruction which is the inevitable and inescapable result of military adventurism.

Also, didn't "Obama" bomb a fucking Doctors Without Borders hospital with nary a peep of opprobrious chinscratching?

    1. Fire Dalmia (DoM5k)   8 years ago

IIRC, he apologized and said we'll do our best not to do it again, and that was enough for CNN.

As I said above, for me personally, the issue is that it's just really hard to believe that this criticism is made in good faith and to take it seriously. I appreciate the increased scrutiny of our illegal military actions in Yemen and other nations against whom we are not lawfully at war, but the fact that this has been going on for the past eight years with nary a peep tells me that they are less concerned with what we are doing than with who is doing it.

Say the negative coverage manages to get Trump booted from the WH in 2020 and replaced by a Democrat. They won't hold that individual accountable if the illegal military actions continue; they'll just stop covering it again.

Precisely. Along with the "have you no decency?" bullshit.
