Trump Wants to Let Nonprofits Get Political, Senate Advances EPA Nom, About that Easing of Russian Sanctions … : P.M. Links
-
President Donald Trump said at the National Prayer Breakfast that he wants to get rid of the Johnson Amendment, the regulation that prohibits nonprofits—churches in particular—from getting involved in the campaigns of political candidates.
- Senate Republicans again suspended committee rules in order to advance the nomination of Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency.
- What went wrong with Trump's first anti-terror raid, an attack in Yemen that killed civilians (including an 8-year-old American girl who was the daughter of terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki)? Almost everything.
- Trump overreaction watch: The U.S. Treasury today scaled back sanctions against certain tech business transactions between American companies and Russia's Federal Security Services. This is not some sort of payoff from Trump to Russia but a complicated correction of an unintended consequence under President Barack Obama's administration. This nuance is, of course, obviously lost in social media.
- Sen. John McCain wants Australia to know that America loves it a whole bunch and to please not be upset about Trump's awful phone call.
- Berkeley students say it was masked outside agitators who came in and disrupted what would have been a peaceful protest of a visit by Milo Yiannopoulos yesterday.

Hello.
You are my rock. You keep me planted. *takes a toke of bc bud
There’s a new Fist in town. LONG LIVE FIST OF BACON!
Meet the new fist, same as the old Fist.
Hello
What the….this does not compute.
Tonio, if you are out there, I saw your AM links post after the links died. I am interested in whatever you set up. If you can, could you send me an e-mail? dgroves140 AT gmail DOT com.
I’m here. Will email you later.
Can you post the info conspicuously as well. Don’t want to send out my email info if at all possible.
I will when I have something. Right now I’m in the figuring it out stage.
Thank you!
By the way, in the AM links when you ambiguously said “we lost RC” I thought he had died at first. Thanks for that rollercoaster of emotions.
He was eventually found in the couch cushions. I don’t know why we didn’t look there first.
It’s always the last place you look…
Thanks! I’ll check later this evening.
Tonio you mentioned cost yesterday in your post.
Please give some though to having all us kick in and get you to make us something nice. You could possible even allocate ownership portions in the event that it turned into something. I would kick in.
If all of us here disappeared at once and went somewhere else I don’t think it would go unnoticed.
Deg,
Don’t put your email out on the net sir. You are now on the list for Warty’s Dungeon.
That list is so long that you’ll have died of old age before he gets to you.
One should be so lucky.
You think being dead will keep you safe from Warty?
I’m just baffled why anyone would want to be kept safe from Warty.
It’s the rape, Jesse. It’s the violent rape.
I’m still not following.
STEVE SMITH OFFER FREE DEMONSTRATION!
President Donald Trump said at the National Prayer Breakfast that he wants to get rid of the Johnson Amendment, the regulation that prohibits nonprofits?churches in particular?from getting involved in the campaigns of political candidates.
They don’t already do that?
They can’t specifically endorse or oppose political candidates.
Unless they are black and running for President.
We need a Gary Johnson amendment.
For the garden?
If they do, does that mean my minister friend can finally give the sermon I wrote for him in which it details how voting democrat undoes salvation?
You have been Fisted.
I’m so confused.
Shhhh, just let it happen. My fist is lubed with bacon.
Fuck Shikha.
Crusty’s not here, man.
Agreed
Word.
WOULD
Senate Republicans again suspended committee rules in order to advance the nomination of Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency.
The world weeps.
The sea level resumes its rise.
Its salty, salty rise…
Euphemism
Lots of ham tears?
Mmmmmmmm ham.
Apropos
One of my favorite things about the commentariat is the constant references to IASIP. Thank you Riven.
Make Reason less Fascist Again.
Fascism might attract women?
wow
*British women
Sloopy’s mom has got it going on.
I was wondering how long it would take to drop to that level. 🙁
Risible behavior, that.
Hey there Bret, I see you looking down.
Don’t want to see my little buddy there with a frown.
Just because I get more women than you, well that’s only because they don’t know you like I do.
Sure, you’re weedy and kind of shy.
But some girlie out there must be needy for a weedy, shy guy.
They want you as the needle when they’re rolling in the hay.
Just hear me out when I say…
Bret, you got it going on.
The ladies will get to know your sexuality when they get to know your personality.
I said, Bret, you got it going on.
Not in a gay way, just in a “hey mate, I wanted to say that you’re looking okay, mate.”
Why can’t a heterosexual guy,
Tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly.
Not all the time, obviously, just when he’s got a problem with his self esteem.
Don’t let anybody tell you you’re not humpable.
Because you’re bumpable.
Well, I hope this doesn’t make you feel uncomfortable.
If I say you’ve got a boom ow-ow.
Come on Bret, help me out now.
Hang on, Sloopy’s mom.
President Donald Trump said at the National Prayer Breakfast that he wants to get rid of the Johnson Amendment, the regulation that prohibits nonprofits?churches in particular?from getting involved in the campaigns of political candidates.
Good news for free speech and the first amendment, although I’m almost certain that’s not how it was intended to be read.
Milo was totally asking for it, right Shikha?
And what the fuck will you say when the violent terrorist left starts going after Libertarians? You think they see us as any different than Milo?
No, you and all of us would be like that women peppersprayed for giving an interview to the press while wearing a Trump hat, or the dude beaten unconscious
Dalmia will make some snarky comment about how Libertarians were asking for it by not standing up to Trump enough. Remember, Dalmai doesn’t worry about the let going after Libertarians because she is not a Libertarian.
She’ll be fine cause she ain’t one.
It cannot be deleted. It cannot be denied.
Wow
Yikes.
Jesus.
3 likes. Huh.
What a cunt.
Holy shit. Remind me what the qualifications are to be a ‘Senior Analyst’ with the Reason Foundation are? I’m beginning to regret my donation this year.
(other than a grasp of English grammar, which I clearly lack).
Ability to write and to let their EEOC compliance officer tick some boxes?
+1 EEO-1?
*sharpens blade*
Rock-solid principles there.
I see she’s a fan of “mini-skirt” rape logic.
You can’t condemn people blowing up abortion clinics without first condemning the doctors who perform the abortions.
See, that’s how a false equivalence works.
And Reason sees it fit to publish her rubbish.
You can’t honestly condemn stalin for the Katyn massacre without first condemning the polish intelligista for going to the forest in the first place.
They were begging for it with their inflammatory anti-Soviet rhetoric!
Honest condemnation of a 250 lb cop that smashes a 67 year old nurse’s face into a basketball court must also condemn 67 year old nurses for
Having the temerity to try and stop a game so a semi-conscious kid can get medical attention.
I applaud your restraint sir.
Your new handle makes it sound like the incident took place in Texas.
Honest condemnation of #RedWedding violence must also condemn Starks who went to Twins. What’s point except baiting n inciting in Joffrey’s Westeros?
I mean, not to justify anything, but Rob did make a promise.
You cannot condemn the Army of Darkness for attacking humanity after Ash said the words mostly right.
And what the fuck will you say when the violent terrorist left starts going after Libertarians? You think they see us as any different than Milo?
Nothing, considering that even people on the left but disagree with the way the Left is going (has gone) are deemed alt-right.
Even though Milo specifically denounces white nationalists and violence.
Even if he were a ‘white nationalist’, it’s not an excuse. There are tons of ethno-nationalist groups whom are just as wrong or right in their nationalism as white nationalists. Jewish ethno-nationalists are called “Israelis” for example. It’s just that white nationalists are deemed particularly wrong for their beliefs since white people are so particularly awesome or so particularly awful, I’m not sure which they mean.
Never suggested it was. This is literally Shikha sticking up for people who committed acts of violence for political ends. That is terrorism by definition.
They beat people bloody, one into unconsciousness, committed arson, smashed store fronts and ATMs, looted a Starbucks, and pepper sprayed a young woman wearing a red hat that said “Make Bitcoin Great Again” on it. They did all of those things to stop a single man from peaceful exercise of his free speech rights.
Shikha demands that acts of terrorism are justified by acts of speech.
If Shikha’s ideas are libertarian in 2017, with friends like her, who needs enemies?
She should go write for Vox
Anthony beat her to it.
What will you say when the Trumpkin commentariat demands to fight over insults to their honor?
Same thing as ever:
Fuck off Tulpa.
Fail Rataxes
Fuck off, Tulpa.
It wasn’t a demand. It was an invitation, fuckhead.
And it’s open-ended.
What do you say to a coward unwilling to back his insults with his person?
That he sounds like a well-adjusted person who doesn’t think violence is an appropriate response to embarrassment.
Throw a couple more hissy fits Hail, show us how well-adjusted you are, coward.
No, you and all of us would be like that women peppersprayed for giving an interview to the press while wearing a Trump hat, or the dude beaten unconscious
I didn’t listen to the audio portion and don’t know what that girl’s politics are, but she wasn’t even wearing a MAGA hat. It was a parody that read “Make Bitcoin Great Again”. I guess the lesson to take away from it is that you should avoid wearing any sort of red hat wherever leftist goons congregate.
Unless it’s got a sickle and star on it amirite?
#bringbackourcommenters
WTF is going on here?
It seems a fair number of commenters, some decade + regulars, are getting fed up with the proggie bullshit that Reason has been cranking out lately and are leaving. Thinking about it myself.
Don’t. Weather the storm of inanity, please. If you folks bail, Ratass and Tony will rule the roost.
Seriously. We need to stick together on this.
We are sticking together. That’s the point.
Solidarity if only for Sloopy’s mom!!!!
Do it here. Don’t leave us alone in the dark with the leftists.
We aren’t breaking up it’s just some are considering moving.
My bags are packed I’m just waiting for my new address.
We lost RC Dean, Lord Hummungus and Hamster of Doom the last couple of days. They bowed out after the two straight days of freak out (ie. TRUMP KILLED GRANDMA!!!!) and the ongoing lack of coverage of the 67 year old nurse Beatdown, but putting up a post on a deputy who gets all threaten-y – with no violence or arest.
I think the Trump Killed Grandma was the final straw. And it was Fisher who normally avoids that shit. It wasn’t so much that it turned out to be a false report, it was the whole bullshit of standing on a dead body to make a point.
Trump overreaction watch
Shackford: you needed to be doing that here the last few days.
Knarf Yenrab and a few others I don’t recall right now hit their limit a few months ago. Something something millennials something something libertarian moment, I guess. It used to be that Postrel and Chapman were the odd ones out and no one could understand why they were published by Reason. Now it’s Chapman, Rico, ENB, Fisher, Dalmia, Suderman and others. They’re putting together an all-star roster of hyperbolic panderers to the left.
Did Episiarch leave as well? And when did Dean quit?
Episiarch left quite a while ago; about the same time Nicole left. But that had something to do with a pretty vicious argument among commenters I believe.
RC Dean, HoD, quit yesterday after the Grandma post. LH posted today that he’s out.
Fuck. Quasi-leftists is all we’ll have left soon. This is shitty.
I’m out when the Trump ‘killed Kittens in a tree by cutting fire dept budgets’ stories break out.
Stick it out together, and fight these fucks.
The readership abandoning Reason is returning fire in it’s own way. Not the way I’d like to see, but it’s one way. I think a steady barrage of criticism from the commentariat like we’ve seen in the last two days would be preferable. It’s become a sort of commentarian revolt, they won’t be able to not take notice if it keeps up. Especially when they fail to meet their next fundraising goal.
I think a lot of you are overestimating how many clicks and donation dollars us regular blog commenters produce for them.
Going off my own personal anecdotal experience, about $100 per year.
I have given far more than that over each of the last few years (I get invited to the Reason Weekend, etc.), but made a significant reduction last time around. Even with that, I’m feeling like I gave too much.
Maybe. Losing a ton of daily views from dedicated regulars would seem to impact the site’s value to advertisers.
Oh, I’m sure it’s overblown. Evidently.
But I never saw it that way. I saw our weight was more philosophical with some financial attributes to back it up.
Perhaps so, but it is first and foremost about principles and freedom of association – not wanting to associate with an organization that post increasingly un-libertarian articles by writers who are hated by libertarians. It is our ball and we may take it and go home. Any negative effects that Reason incurs the result of Reason’s choices.

I thought Episiarch started working on a political campaign?
Oh, I could well be wrong. I’m pretty sure Nikki left after the argument and I read something that made me thing Episiarch went for the same reason but I may have misunderstood.
What argument? She’s the prickly sort to have had a lot of those. The last time I saw her on here, she was catching shit for declaring that laws mandating that people shovel “their” sidewalks were just because it was super annoying for her to walk through snow.
I wasn’t here the day it happened so I was reading other commenters reports about it. Pretty sure it involved John and a few others.
Rumor, but not verified.
I really do think they believe they will draw all the disaffected Democrats/progressives/far-left to the Libertarian Party. Sounds like the Jacket wants to create a Libertarian Moment?. They don’t realize or seem to care that they could be drawing from both sides. I’m from the right(kind of) side, but you guys and Reason(to some extent) are making me think about my own views and possibly even changing some of them.
If they let those yahoos in, that will be the end of Reason.
That pack are a virus.
That side doesn’t want debate. The ones that do want to argue in good faith should be welcomed. The very few.
Murray Rothbard for example, said that he terribly regretted trying to make inroads and alliances with the left. They’re sophists at best and antifa vigilantes at worst. (the left has not reached peak awfulness).
Reaching out to leftists is a mistake. Libertarians need to make their arguments as best they can and whoever joins… joins. Explicitly pandering leftwards isn’t just futile and counter productive, but also detrimental because it makes libertarians more leftist and does not make leftists more libertarian.
Indeed.
You’d think that the goings-on during the Obama administration would have utterly shattered the Bush-era dreams of a left-libertarian alliance, but I guess trying to appeal to people who have repeatedly demonstrated their rejection of moral principles qua principles and that are literally calling everyone who disagrees a Nazi and a fascist right now, and that violence should be applauded against such, still seems like a viable path to some.
Libertarian moment!
I don’t think that the TDS by the writers here is anything like the lofty goals you ascribe.
I think it boils down to the fact that the Kochs are #neverTrump and I think I remember that some lefty billioniare ( Bezos ? ) has become a big contributor recently.
Money talks and bullshit walks.
Hamster was an elusive female libertarian.
And the thing with Sloopy’s mom. See today’s AM links or yesterday’s PM links for more info.
Sloopy’s mom was the nurse to whom Switzy refers above. I’m thinking about putting up an alternative site.
People who would prefer their libertarian periodical to be at least vaguely libertarian instead of staffed by Weigels and progressive virtue-signalling ?ber alles hacks.
Holy shit, that tweet actually really pisses me off. Deport to Vox or Salon or somewhere else, please.
She’s getting ripped in the responses – including some by commenters who post here.
Nonsense like that deserve no platform on a supposed libertarian publication
I was gonna leave the other day for opposite reasons, and now I’ll just look like a biter. So I’m stuck here for at least another few weeks.
I noticed someone asking earlier today about reasonable for Safari.
There is a pretty good chance that greasonable (see username link) will work on Safari, you would just need to install Tampermonkey first. I tried testing with a version for Windows, but unfortunately it is too old to support Tampermonkey (2012). Greasonable is supported on Firefox and Chrome )and its derivatives (ie Opera)), so most of the browser specific stuff has been removed.
Also of note, there is support for changing the fonts, so the recent spate of uppercase i’s can be detected easily.
I’ve never said thank you for greasonable.
Thank you.
You are welcome! And thanks for your support.
I didn’t realize it worked on Firefox. Testing as soon as I get home, thanks!
It should even work, now! (Apparently the newer Greasemonkey doesn’t like ‘match’ syntax anymore)
Thanks for your support.
It’s all fancy now 😮
Many thanks. Wish I could put it on the work computer.
Thank you!
Thank you for your support.
and its derivatives (ie Opera)
*Lights Ted signal*
You cheeky monkey!
Haven’t used Opera since I switched to Linux.
I’m beginning to think about leaving, but more because of how badly the mobile site is sucking. I can’t comment from Chrome, and it’s crashing Firefox. (Pages routinely load to about 80% and hang for a long time before finishing.)
I know you’ve moved on, Ted, but you’ll always be a stalwart Opera user in my heart…
Which distro of Linux are you working with?
Greasonable rocks! Thank you.
Thanks!
Florida man wanted for $400 deodorant and body wash theft
Anybody that needs that much deodorant that badly should just be allowed to keep it.
Probably does not disqualify most men in Florida right?
It’s Florida Man. He’s going to use it to either get high or build an improvised explosive device, which will detonate prematurely and kill a large number of non-native wildlife.
minus 100 Burmese Pythons?
Supposedly Nile monitors are the new hotness.
“Now how do I turn this shit into meth….?”
non-native wildlife
New Yorkers?
Did he steal lots of varieties, because nobody needs 23 kinds of deodorant… supposedly.
Bernie Sander’s does not approve – nobody needs $400 worth of deodorant.
I surprised a guy burgling my garage one morning and he ran off and left his bicycle in my driveway. (High school students are quick learners!) On the handlebar was a grocery sack containing about 10 cans of Axe body spray. For reasons I cannot explain, nor even care to learn about, apparently kids these days use Axe specifically as a sort of currency. So I’ll bet the “hundreds of dollars worth of hygiene products” in this story was essentially the same thing.
Step 1: Tape down spray button on top of Axe can.
Step 2: Quickly, throw can into room where someone is studying.
Step 3: Close door, run away.
College was fun.
Based on the ads, that room was about to be filled with smokin hot 20 year old chicks looking for satisfaction NOW. Why would you run away from that scenario?
For reasons I cannot explain, nor even care to learn about, apparently kids these days use Axe specifically as a sort of currency.
Smelling like a perfumed toxic waste dump get ALL the bitches, MS. Barring that it causes them to pass out, which in the mind of an AXE wearer is just as good.
Nobody needs $400 worth of deodorant.
STEVE SMITH HAD HOT DATE NEED SMELL
I see street vendors and flea markets selling products like that. I’m sure it was for resale.
STEVE SMITH?
President Donald Trump said at the National Prayer Breakfast that he wants to get rid of the Johnson Amendment, the regulation that prohibits nonprofits?churches in particular?from getting involved in the campaigns of political candidates.
I guess I’m for stopping the under-the-table billions and letting citizens and organizations put their money where their mouth is. I feel like a true democracy, people could go as hard or soft as they want on politics.
people could go as hard or soft as they want on politics.
If your politics last longer than 4 hours, seek immediate attention?
*golf clap*
Of course, a megachurch sermon might last longer than four hours…
(the benefit of being Catholic: we bitch to the priest if the homily is longer than five minutes, because we need to be home in time for the pregame show!)
masked outside agitators
Or just a bunch of gutter punks who took BART from Oakland.
Or the Mission, or Market Street… BART connects all the gutter punk neighborhoods.
Part One
Somewhere in America?
Pushing open the door, I entered the headquarters of the Danger Five, the deadliest, most effective group of spies and clandestine operatives the world had ever known.
“All right, team, fortunately for you we’ve got a new mission,” I said to them, accepting a cocktail from Robot Pierre. “Unfortunately for me, you lot are the weakest, least effective group of spies and clandestine operatives the world has ever known. But since the original Danger Five are all either retired or on some sort of time-travel-related mission, I can’t remember, you are the best I’ve got so I’m stuck with you. Just don’t expect me to learn any of your names.”
I gobbled some of my drink, an excellent concoction that Robot Pierre had labeled The Perfect Libertarian Moment. Just the right amount of bittersweet. “Also, you’ll still be called the Danger Five, because I don’t want to get new business cards.” That would probably be fine. They were at the very least dangerous to themselves, and I assumed there were five of them; the eagle part of my brain can’t count past three.
A pink-haired young woman in the back loudly asked, “We’re gonna go punch some Nazis, right? That’s what I signed up for. Punching Nazis.”
“Shut up,” I said. “No.”
“Are we stopping the hippie riots in California?” asked a middle-aged yokel carrying a shotgun.
“Shut up,” I said. “No, I wouldn’t trust any of you to stop a lynch mob of apocalyptic hamsters. Progressives are far beyond your skill level.”
“Well what’s our mission then?” inquired an insightful, witty, ambiguous character, perhaps a stand-in for the reader, who’s to say.
“Shut up,” I said. “I’ve got a story here you need to deliver to Reason Magazine, about a lady being beaten up by the cops. Maybe she’s even somebody’s mother.” I handed the ambigous one the manuscript. Humans all looked the same to me but statistically speaking this one was probably male, so mentally I edited that previous sentence to contain the appropriate pronoun. I didn’t actually edit it, though, because the only thing less possible to me than editing is mucking about.
[stands and applauds]
[sees Tonio stand up for his applause, decides to follow suit]
“And,” I added with urgency, “as always: kill Hitler.”
The pink-haired one whipped out a pistol and started shooting wildly, destroying a lamp, the record player, and one of the paintings.
“What the fuck are you doing?” everyone else shouted. My attention was on the cocktail.
“I was shooting at Hitler,” she said triumphantly.
*Cut to commercial*
Baby Hitler?
Shut up. I mean, TUNE IN NEXT WEEK TO FIND OUT.
Keep it coming. Where’s my decoder ring? If I ask a bunch of question will you believe I’m Judge Nap?
“D….R…I…N…K….. .M…O…R…E…. .O…V…A…L…T…I…N…E”
“D….R…I…N…K….. .M…O…R…E…. .V…O…D…K…A”
*pokes eye out*
My book is missing a page.
Fixed sorta. Didn’t realize how short the character limit is here.
10/10, would totally watch!
I’ve got newfound respect for SugarFree. This has not gone smoothly for me…..
GAH! Don’t let him see that! It will go to his head.
It will go to his head if we’re lucky.
Nothing is smoother than the puss-and-offal parfait that is Sugarfree’s prose.
“The university [Berkeley] blamed “150 masked agitators” for the unrest, saying they had come to campus to disturb an otherwise peaceful protest.”
And all those cops couldn’t stop 150 people?
Ok. Maybe they aren’t students. Doesn’t change what took place.
OK. Or maybe they are students, because they wore masks, and nobody from Berkeley actually took attendance.
Couldn’t, didn’t want to, same difference.
This is why militarized police departments need to invest in Voltrons!
Virginia brewing company releases Oreo-flavored beer
I like Oreo cookies, but not beer.
I like vanilla Oreos.
How about Oreo infused rum?
In either case, this sounds like a recipe for projectile vomiting.
But how does it taste coming back up?
Malibu with Godiva chocolate liqueur tastes almost exactly like a Mounds bar. Of course, as a dude, you can’t order one anywhere in the vicinity of another dude.
I’m drinking Black Butte porter, which is already pretty much liquid cookies.
Delicious liquid cookies! I’m a fan.
Huge fan of Black Butte. One of my go to when I buy an actual six pack instead of craft singles.
Oh, for sure! If I’m back in the beers looking for a nice seasonal dark beer and I can’t find a new fun one to try… Black Butte Porter is always there for me.
I used to enjoy Black Butt, but then she went back to South Africa.
Delicious.
THAT is a fantastic beer. I’m sitting on a bottle to see how it matures.
You should take the cap off. It’s a bit scratchy.
Even styles I don’t really like are pretty good when Deshutes makes em.
I’m not a big fan of sweets in general, but Wren House has had a Halloween lineup that’s fun once per year. Candy apple sour (which I’d be more than fine drinking all the time, actually), pumpkin pie, and a Kit-kat stout that had so much ground-up Kit-kat that they kept having to flush the tap head because it was clogging. I like cloudy unfiltered beers so that was rather amusing for a different take on that style.
ATTENTION ALL OTHER REASON AUTHORS – Scott is running away from you, in first, in the alt-text category.
Ed, you might be able to catch him.
2chilli was pretty good too, IIRC.
Scott’s been crushing alt-text for months (years?) now, all they can do is compete for 2nd place. And, I guess, how distant said place is.
A pink-haired young woman in the back loudly asked, “We’re gonna go punch some Nazis, right? That’s what I signed up for. Punching Nazis.”
“Shut up,” I said. “No.”

Damnit
“Well what’s our mission then?”
Kill Hitler?
Full story upthread. I didn’t respond to myself properly.
I’m day drinking too boycott Reason. Six beers, bitches. Try and catch up.
Yeah? I smoked my lunch.
Get on my level!
Berkeley students say it was masked outside agitators who came in and disrupted what would have been a peaceful protest of a visit by Milo Yiannopoulos yesterday.
That they did absolutely nothing about.
Can you blame them what with all that violence?
That, judging from Twitter posts, they actively supported until they realized everyone else in the world hated them for it.
Yep, and by claiming that it was “outside agitators”, they give not only them, but their entire protest an out. After all, by claiming that they were outside agitators, what’s to stop them from claiming that it was a false flag?
What went wrong with Trump’s first anti-terror raid, an attack in Yemen that killed civilians (including an 8-year-old American girl who was the daughter of terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki)? Almost everything.
A plan is only good until the first arrow flies. Maybe this isn’t Trumps fault you asshole, oh my god, why don’t we blame the US SOLDIERS?? Maybe that fucking dude who DIED should have shot better, seal team six sucks balls maybe? If they had been better soldiers the battle would have went off without a hitch, right?
Since Christopher died, everything goes off without a Hitch.
*narrows gaze*
Got hot there for a moment but I find it to be incredibly dishonorable for Reason to stand on corpses just to take potshots.
Get used to it. This is only week two of about 200.
Possibly 400 if the media keeps it up.
Having recently watched a lot of video from Berkeley that shows that the progressives want to progress back to 1968 and give him an early start on reelection, I wouldn’t be surprised at all.
It’s been reported that women were using weapons against the infidel and that the Al Queda badboys were using the kids as shields to fire from.
Read about it on instapundit.
If a man hides behind children while he is shooting at you and then blames you for the children’s death he is not an honorable man.
So…the commander in chief of the military bears no responsibility for the people killed by the military he commands? Is that what we’re going with?
I suspect he didn’t tell them to go kill 8 year olds. Or get killed themselves.
I guess we will have to see if he learns anything from this.
I also suspect he didn’t come up with the plans by playing Rainbow Six or Call of Duty and saying – here, do it like this. Just like the Lightworker didn’t tell Seal Team Six he’d OK them going after Osama if they’d bring 2 extra snipers, equip each member of the team with an extra flashbang, and bring one more squad of guys to guard the exit to the compound.
@ Paranoid, (the following isn’t about Trump) I do believe the President of the United States should bear the full weight of any military action he or she has ordered. But to say the President is responsible for each shot, each confirmed kill, each dead soldier, each dead civilian, each misstep, each friendly fire where one US soldier blow the brains out of another US soldier, or the infinite happenstances for everything between heaven and earth on the battlefield is plain wrong.
And to claim all that while waving around the decapitated, bloody, skull of an a dead child makes me sick and angry.
So in my anger I posted something like, sure we could toss the child’s skull in the lap of the president, or we could toss to the man who fired the bullet that ended her life, or the C.O. who ran the op, or hey why not toss that child’s ruined face at the feet of her parents cause where were they when their baby got killed? But it does seem pretty retarded to play hot potato with child’s skull — so I’ll just bow out and let Scott do whatever he wants with the skull — which I guess is throwing it at Trump.
But to say the President is responsible for each shot, each confirmed kill, each dead soldier, each dead civilian, each misstep, each friendly fire where one US soldier blow the brains out of another US soldier, or the infinite happenstances for everything between heaven and earth on the battlefield is plain wrong.
I’d have much, much more sympathy for this line of argument if every single President didn’t jump up out of his chair to take full personal responsibility for every military operation that could be deemed success. Victory has many fathers but defeat is an orphan, and all that. And of course it is factual to point out that none of these people would have died without the president giving the order so…why is it crazy to paint him as responsible for what happened, again?
No man, you are right, the President is ultimately responsible for the life and death that follows in the wake of their obligatory orders.
I’d like to apologize to the Commentariat and to Mr. Shackford. I got triggered by the dead child thing and spoke words in haste and anger, I take no pride in that, and the sum of my claims fall well short of meaningful critique.
Stop the presses! Someone on the internet just admitted they were wrong and apologized! This is no doubt a first!
While this website is still named “Reason,” we are all human beings. Even the most consistently rational of us have our breaking points – whether that is the killing of a child, or the beating of an elderly nurse tending to a patient. I admire that you apologized, even though I would have totally given you a mulligan on that. That you chose to own your anger and apologize is truly commendable.
Damn, son. Now that’s how to give a heartfelt apology.
*takes notes*
I wish there was a like button (or an edit button) on this commentary site. First apology I’ve ever seen on the internet. Also, I’m right there with you. I’m pretty detached and reasonable about most topics, but kids and safety/harm is the one thing that will get me all riled up.
we could throw the child’s skull in the lap of the Islamist who was using it for a shield while trying to kill the infidel.
Uh, I’m not sure I’m entirely interested in anyone at Reason’s attempts at tactical or strategic analysis of military action. Unless you happen to have a full account of everything that happened, second-guessing is just playing civilian Armchair General.

Sen. John McCain wants Australia to know that America loves it a whole bunch and to please not be upset about Trump’s awful phone call.
Isn’t this just politics in a nutshell?
Is what Trump did any worse than Obama and the Churchill bust or the wrong-region DVDs?
Did Trump hurt the feeling of a guy trying to dump his unwanted crap on us? That’s just awful.
America would like John McCain to know that he has a nice lawn at home, and if he would go home to take care of it, we’d all promise to stay off it.

Milo Yiannopoulos is trying to convince colleges that hate speech is cool
Note to Robby.
Clearly that was not supposed to be a reply :\
by associating me with people who have odious and disgusting opinions
Tsk, tsk. What tedious social signaling, am I right?
Yiannopoulos “serves as a gateway” to more dangerous ideas.
I…parody…brain locking…
Fuck it. I’ve done it. I’ve learned to love Big Robby.
But Oren Segal, director of the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism, believes Yiannopoulos “serves as a gateway” to more dangerous ideas.
I hope all of Oren Segal’s teeth fall out – except for one, so he can still have a toothache!
May he grow like an onion with your head in the ground!
(yiddish curses can be weird)
crap: “May he grow like an onion with his head in the ground!”

A mind is a dangerous thing.
Milo is Marijuana?
Trump on Goodell: “The commissioner is a dope. He’s a stupid guy.”
I often think this too. Then I remember Goodell makes something like $50 million a year. Then I don’t know what to think.
That makes the owners collective unwise?
Or maybe they want a goof in charge…?
Yiannopoulos trying to convince colleges hate speech is cool
Is CNN this reliably derpy? Hate speech, really? Man, my alma mater paid Malik Zulu Shabazz to come tell me I was the devil and beyond redemption due to the color of my skin. At least Milo is funny.
And that ain’t new. In the early 90s at my High School we had a guest speaker (music professor from local college) who showed us the video for “Jeremy” by Pearl Jam and told us we were all a bunch of little Nazis. Fun times. Did I mention most of the kids in the class were Jewish?
Holy shit…what did the parents say about that?!
Sounds exactly like when I was a senior in HS and a group of white people from Wisconsin came to lecture us about how insensitive we all were to Native Americans.(Our mascot name was “Indians”).
Yes they are that reliably derpy.
Annnnd scooped on top of it all. This link is giving me hemorrhoids.
Was Tim Wise not available, or was his speaking fee too high?
I still remember Dick Gregory’s inspirational message when he came to Penn State. “Drink lots of water.”
President Donald Trump said at the National Prayer Breakfast that he wants to get rid of the Johnson Amendment, the regulation that prohibits nonprofits?churches in particular?from getting involved in the campaigns of political candidates.
It would simplify the tax code, and most are already doing it anyway, so sure, why not
Most is a real stretch if you’re talking about nonprofits. Most of those do not touch political campaigns for fear of pissing off their donor base and incurring income tax liabilities.
Some engage in the more mundane grass roots lobbying, which is permitted. This is issue advocacy type stuff, but doesn’t involve endorsing a particular candidate or party.
A few engage in actual political activity and go through the process of registering.
Now if you’re talking about churches, that’s a whole other kettle (or basket) of fish. Many congregations have made it quite clear from the pulpit who they support and why. Churches have always been in a weird space and had a distinct advantage over other NFP’s in this regard.
Weird. Mine pretty much just reminded us that politics is secular nonsense, and not to hate each other over it. I do like my church.
Berkeley students say it was masked outside agitators who came in and disrupted what would have been a peaceful protest of a visit by Milo Yiannopoulos yesterday.

One of my favorite things from the book Good Omens was the part about the demon’s big project making the highway around London miserable.
I’ve been listening to a prog go on about Trump being awful, etc.
And she said she’s glad that NPR is getting less government aid, because with voluntary donations NPR can better go after the administration.
Well, that’s a little bit of self-awareness there… I mean, not like it’d stick in a Dem government, but it’s something.
New Statesman The Furred Reich: The truth about Nazi furries and the alt-right
This is easily the strangest thing I’ve read today…possibly this week. The article doesn’t really *go* anywhere, but it’s interesting.
“Ich bin der furrier!”
I was a furry for three days once. I’m willing to believe anything about them. I’ve seen things.
Go on…
Go on…
I ended up at a furcon in Reno once. Was on a road trip with a friend to hunt Bunyans and stopped in because both of us had family there. Having your aunt decide everyone is going to a furry convention is weird.
I went to anthrocon, the largest furrycon, in Pittsburgh because I lived a 5 minute bike ride from the convention center and I knew I was leaving the city within the year so I considered it a Steel City bucket list thing to do. I wore my regular clothes but compensated with psychedelic drug use. I insisted I was a deer named fenix the whole weekend. Furries are not normal people by any stretch of the imagination. But they were incredibly friendly, passionate, and open about their bizarre fandom. I guess I could be snide about it, but nah.
Yeah, our experience in Reno was that everyone was super friendly and totally comfortable with the gawping looky loos. I was impressed by the level of effort some of them put in to their fursuits.
Hit all your fetishes, did it?
+1 public fleshlight
I’m not entirely sure that could be done all at once.
Not even in Germany?!
*does quick mental inventory*
Well yes, you could probably hit all the right spots in Berlin.
I assume you’d still need 48 hours. 24 if you don’t care about survival.
That’s just silly. If I can check off all of my boxes in one go, I want it to be my swan song. I don’t think I could go back to normal life after that.
I’ve always had a thing for girls with rabbit ears. Does that count?
Hassenpfeffer?
To be honest, not really seeing the strategic objective of our being in Yemen.
It would seem like furries would not last very long in Yemen, for obvious reasons.
Change is hard. What else would we do?
We need to fight them there so we don’t have to fight them here.
And Reason would rather us IMPORT the Yemenis to NOT fight them here!
We have to fight Saudi Arabia’s transparent proxy war with Iran for them because otherwise we might have to pay attention to how closely connected the Saudis are with terrorist groups.
We’ve always been at war with Eastasia.
And that !11!!! my good Sir, is why Trump causes TDS !
He threatens the money flow.
Milo Yiannopoulos is trying to convince colleges that hate speech is cool
Repost in the right place
At least the journalist had the balls to print Milo’s response (with asterisks).
“”When you see white supremacists hanging outside of Milo’s events to poach potential recruits, it speaks to exactly why Milo is potentially dangerous. Milo is bringing his misogyny and hatred and racism onto campus, and people (are) sort of maybe considering it, ‘Oh, this is just ironic. He’s just being — you know, pushing the envelope.'” Segal said.
“”And so it enables his ideology, his messages to sort of seep in. The next level is maybe an openness to more white supremacist ideas, more hardcore believers. I think that’s fundamentally dangerous.””
Wait, now we’re holding Milo accountable for weirdos who hang around his speeches?
By that reasoning, he’s a gateway to communist ideas.
Let me see if this article actually catches Milo Y saying something racist or sexist…
Ah, a whites-only scholarship.
It isn’t racism if you’re helping a group that’s the victim of institutional discrimination. Affirmative action is discrimination, carried out by institutions, therefore white people and asians can’t be racist.
By that logic, Jeremiah Wright should have been banned, and by extension Obama for being one of his acolytes.
No, Ted, how can you not get it by now? If a conservative has crazy followers that he’s never met and explicitly distances himself from, it means that he’s secretly a white supremacist neo-Nazi homophobe misogynist. If a Democrat regularly spends time with former terrorists or radical preachers, that just means the people pointing it out are white supremacist neo-Nazi homophobe misogynists.
U.S. eases cyber-security sanctions on Russia
I’ve just heardun confirmed musings that the mayor told the police to stand down, his motivations variously painted as either acting out of sympathy with the protesters or fearing that the Berkeley police force was too small for the job and would escalate the situation further rather than restoring order.
I have yet to see directly reported evidence for this, however.
If he didn’t order the police to stand down, why was no one arrested? I have not heard where a single person was arrested during this. Have you?
Not that I’m aware of, plus his public and verifiable tweets very obviously show what side he’s on. I’d find a stand-down order eminently plausible.
Whew, I thought you had broken the comments again.
Rotherham defendants yell ‘Allahu Akbar’ as they are sentenced for sexual abuse of minors.
But Reason, in their one article they published on this, assured me it had nothing to do with Islam. How can this be?
They have been radicalized by prison, clearly.
Followed the link to the Telegraph article and came across this:
Convicted rapists have supporters. smdh.
Take the convicted and hang them with their nuts cut off and stuck in their mouths out in front of the court house leaving them to rot for a few months, and I bet they would have a lot fewer supporters. Or at least fewer vocal ones.
And thanks to Britain being effectively disarmed, they basically got away with it. At some point they will try that shit over here and find the response a bit different.
Lose your shit and you get arrested.
And it’s not like the picked on the girls with the best home lives. Or, you know, unnecessary luxuries like “having a father who cares”.
“Allahu Akbar”. Like that makes it okay.
According to widely-held views in Islam, it does.
No, you feed them to feral pigs.
Horrible death for pedos and no trip to Muslim Paradise for you.
STEVE SMITH NEVER CONVICTED. SASQUATCH PRIVILEGE.
NO PLACE FOR PROSECUTION OF RAPESQUATCH IN COMMON LAW!
Let me guess, their rationale is that it’s not the men’s fault that the little sluts were not kept chastely in purdah but were out there for the taking, knees apart.
Too complex.
Our guys vs foreign women = our guys are in the right.
If you want the intellectual version, add “Sluts lied, and racists prosecuted us, because whites stick together”
Scumbags.
I think for this sort of stuff you have to go to the conservative sites who are willing to report on this. I’m afraid Reason is a little ambivalent still where this is concerned. I’m still no clear what their stance is.
not
This should be a stain on the UK for eons to come.
They fucked up. Badly. I wish the victims could sue the fucking MPs and constabulary out of existence. With or without them, the results are basically the same.
“Berkeley students say it was masked outside agitators who came in and disrupted what would have been a peaceful protest of a visit by Milo Yiannopoulos yesterday.”
But who do they blame for Robby’s pathetic coverage?
“Yiannopoulos’s old Breitbart boss, Steve Bannon, is now a top advisor to President Trump. I wonder whether Bannon would rather Yiannopoulos’s speech go off without a hitch, or be shut down by violent protesters? Which outcome is better for the law-and-order policy positions of the Trump administration? It’s not actually a question: the president’s narrative is obviously better served when irate students resort to violence to silence an alt-right speaker.”
https://reason.com/blog/2017/02…..pus-on-fir
We can go to Salon for that level of stupid.
I’ve seen dumber stuff on Twitter, but what’s that say about Robby–that his “work” is Twitter level pathetic?
You’re hurting your brand Reason.
Go over to the thread on the Dalmia article and read what she had to say on twitter. It is even worse.
Honest condemnation of #Berkley violence must also condemn those who invited him. What’s point except baiting n inciting in Trump’s America?
~Shikha “Somehow a Senior Analyst for Reason” Dalmia
Holy shit.
That’s indefensible.
It really is. She uses the moniker as Senior Analyst for Reason. That is more or less an official account. They should fire her ass for that.
You hypocrite! Firing people for exercising free speech! She has freedom to say what she wants, without consequences!
Etc.
Also starting to regret donating money to the Reason Foundation last December…
Hey, they got our money. I thought I was so clever by cutting my donation in half, and then I fell for KMW’s honeyed words and resubscribed to print edition couple weeks later.
Oh well, frog, scorpion etc.
Remember when we used to have “Everybody Draw Mohamed” Day?
Today I found out there’s a whole topic tag on the subject!
It’s “Charlie Hebdo had it coming” all over again.
Reason’s take on Hebdo was that PC culture and the refusal to honestly criticize Islam was to blame. Islam was in now way to blame and exactly what criticisms of Islam should have been made but were not because of PC culture was left unsaid.
It’s worth pointing out that this is at least a tacit acknowledgement that the left is dominated by savages lacking in agency or rational decision-making capabilities.
It’s worth pointing out that this is at least a tacit acknowledgement that the left is dominated by savages lacking in agency or rational decision-making capabilities.
Definitely worth pointing out twice.
Most of Reason’s current staff have severe Trump Derangement Syndrome. Those who were terrible to begin with (Rico, Dalmia, etc.) are pretty much unreadable at this point.

“Ultimately, and unfortunately, however, it was impossible to maintain order given the level of threat, disruption and organized violence,” UC Berkeley said in a statement.
One of the largest state universities in the country and a city of 116,000, both with police departments and they just had no idea what to do about a bunch of masked douchebags beating people up?
Question, how many arrests were made? There is film all over the internet of people openly assaulting people and vandalizing things. And wearing a mask in public is a crime in California. So, how many arrests were made trying to keep order? Not a single one that I am aware of.
This is real fascism. The fascists show up, beat the shit out of people and the authorities look the other way. I guarantee you had someone defended themselves and knock the piss out of one of those little bastards, Berkeley and UC police would have suddenly appeared and decided to maintain order by arresting the person who fought back.
Maybe the authorities will only step up when College YRs decide to recruit informal goon squads to protect their speakers?
Yes, they’ll arrest the goons.

Mel Gibson, Vince Vaughn under fire for upcoming police brutality film
Hollywood conservatives Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn are set to star in the upcoming thriller “Dragged Across Concrete” about two police officers who are caught on camera using strong arm tactics.
Already, the social mediaverse is buzzing about the film, which hasn’t even been made yet, with some speculating that the movie will lean right.
“‘Dragged Across Concrete’ sounds like Conservative porn,” one Twitter user wrote.
Vaughn has openly identified himself as a conservative during a radio interview with Adam Carolla in 2015. Meanwhile, Gibson’s been discussing his conservative views for some time, telling Barbara Walters in a 1990 interview regarding abortion, “One can’t decide for oneself who comes into this world and who doesn’t. That decision doesn’t belong to us.”
So are these A-listers receiving criticism for a movie no one has even seen just because they’re conservatives?
“When actors interject themselves into political debates, or are mired in public controversies, it alters our perception?” said branding and communications expert Scott Pinsker. “It’s a far greater challenge for right-of-center actors because Hollywood and the media veer left, and all the criticism is amplified.”
‘Hacksaw Ridge’ was spectacular, either way.
If the movie shows police guilty of actual brutality, isn’t that a good thing?
I think the Twitter commenter is implying that the movie is going to justify police brutality.
Kinda like the way people trot out Heather MacDonald to justify police brutality.
Mel Gibson is automatically wrong like Trump is wrong.
If Trump denounced antisemitism tomorrow, Hollywood would call him a Nazi for it.
Mel Gibson is like that.
“Consider the source”, that’s their prime directive.
Vaughn is an A-lister?
He’s an A-lister in my heart.
Shame that True Detective season 2 was such a mess of bad writing, though.
For about a week…
FFS, by today everyone knows that Gibson is crazy Catholic. If you’re going to suggest he’s politically conservative, try to find a position other than abortion.

Who knew there were so many homophobic, racist xenophobes at Berkeley
The birthplace of the free speech movement has become its graveyard.
Hundreds of liberals rioted at the University of California Berkeley Wednesday night — burning stores, throwing Molotov cocktails and clashing with police.
The rampaging mob forced the university to shut down an event featuring gay conservative firebrand and Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos.
“I’m outraged that Milo has been given a platform at UC Berkeley, and there should be no place for him here,” visiting assistant art professor Samara Haplerin told the Daily Californian. “He should be scared that people aren’t going to stand for this.”
Ironically, Milo had planned to deliver remarks defending free speech.
“One thing we do know for sure: the Left is absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down,” he wrote on Facebook.
Halperin’s just jealous that Milo’s a better looking gay person than she is.
We should all take seriously the opinion of a “visiting assistant art professor”.

well now I know who’s funding the Keep Our Crap Superintendent of LAUSD (president of the school board, whatever his fucking title is) campaign. Sarah Silverman calls for military to overthrow President Trump
Sarah Silverman has called for a military coup against President Donald Trump.
The comedian posted in all-capital letters Wednesday night to her nearly 10 million followers to “wake up & join the resistance.”
She added, “Once the military is w us fascists get overthrown. Mad king & his handlers go bye bye.”
Silverman tweeted amid the violent riots that broke out in Berkeley, California, over Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos’ now-canceled speech at UC Berkeley.
Director Judd Apatow, known for “Knocked Up” and “Trainwreck,” said in a now-deleted tweet about the riots, “This is just the beginning. When will all the fools who are still supporting Trump realize what is at stake?”
Filmmaker Lexi Alexander chimed in, defending the riot on Twitter telling her followers to “punch Nazis,” “riot when your college invites a Nazi,” and “set it all on fire.”
They’ve gone completely insane.
What an original idea!
Hmm, using the military to overthrow “fascism” is a good thing? I mean, wouldn’t a military coup open the door to real fascism?
What, you think these badass revolutionaries have even fired a pistol before?
Yeah, the military will totally get on board with Sarah Silverman. The average service-member’s political views line up with hers exactly.
This is getting awfully close to fighting words. Like a no-shit incitement to violence. This gets worse before it gets better.
LOL you sound like a leftist
Yeah, the rhetoric has taken a decidedly violent bent in the past few days. I do not like where this appears to be heading.
Well.
I’ve just about had it with this “free markets/free mind” farce, I think.
For those seeking #justiceforsloopysmom… You should know that KMW came out about ten minutes ago and said that they won’t be covering her case because… “it’s not quite right for Reason.”
So it’s been fun and all that… but very sincerely fuck those guys.
If you want to stay in touch with me, get yourself a Steam account or stay in touch with the Reasonoids because I’m out after today.
Wow.
A current and on-subject story with a deep connection to the loyal readers and “not quite right”? Too many editors not enough journalists.
Yep. Not sure where I’m going, but I ain’t staying here.
If you’re not hip with Steam, you can find me on twitter, as well.
You guys can’t jump ship. That’s, what, seven sane regulars departed now? =(
Incentives, incentives, incentives.
When this commentariat is nothing but Tulpa/Shriek/Dunphy types and mouth breathing trolls… Reason will have no one to blame but themselves.

Don’t wait up. That’ll be a long wait for a train won’t come.
Nice ALIEN reference. Very sorry to see you go.
Wow….now I am going to have to ponder sticking around.
I periodically go on little breaks from Reason, but I always end up coming back, only because all of the other libertarianish sites with open comments are either poorly trafficked or even more WTF than Reason.
I’m starting to think the lefty tin foil hatters bitching about the Kochs might have been on to something. Every organization taking their money has really gone to shit in the last couple years.
Just to clarify… this isn’t going to be a little break. When I leave work today in an hour or so (4:23 MDT), you won’t be seeing anymore comments from me. Ever.
Can’t blame you. We haven’t always agreed on everything, but it’s sad to see you go. I was just saying I’ve tried unsuccessfully to quit. The commentariat is the only reason I always end up returning. With so many regulars swearing off, I don’t know. Maybe next time I take a little break there won’t be anything worth coming back to.
The commentariat is the only reason I’ve been coming back for the last year or so.
I’m going to miss you guys… but this is really the last straw to me. If Reason won’t run a current piece that’s squarely in their wheel house that’s about the mother of one of their active supporters… I just don’t know what kind of place this is anymore.
In case anyone really wanted to know…
This is the real reason why there are no female libertarians…here.
Ill be adding on steam when I get on my computer.
I’ll keep an eye out for you.
Yeah and I’ll keep an eye out for the nudes I’m owed.

We agreed quid pro quo!
Cosmotarian Cocktail Party Magazine. Because, gosh, what is truly best in life is being accepted socially by increasingly left and increasingly authoritarian Beltway peers, instead of sticking to moral principle.
Reason has definitely fallen from grace in my eyes.
That’s disappointing. As has been said before, this publication was happy to use pictures of the wee Reason Spicer in their fundraising drive, but they won’t make a few calls and write something up on Reason’s grandma being roughed up and imprisoned by the cops?
Expect a friend request from “comet” in a few hours.
I’ll keep an eye out for it.
Don’t tell anyone else… but you’re one of my favorites. No homo.
I’m feeling both pride, and embarrassment at the implication that I’m a woman.
Either way, *blush*
I’m done too, and I’ve been here since sometime in the early 2000s. The only reason (drink!) I’ve hung around the last several months is because of the commenters. The hyperbolic stories about shit no one gives a fuck about has caused me to find better things to do with my time. Lately, the PM links were a draw for the comments only, and with so many of the commenters I enjoy reading leaving, what’s the point anymore?
Catch you on the flip side, Riven.
I hear that.
See you there.
I’ll bring the whiskey!
You should know that KMW came out about ten minutes ago and said that they won’t be covering her case because… “it’s not quite right for Reason.”
What? That would have warranted a Balko nut-punch easily before he left and came down with a bad case of Stockholm Syndrome.
I’ve stayed away from this topic so far, but this is on the nose. Balko’s work was a major high point for Reason, and the absence of a writer hitting this beat really hurts the publication.
Perhaps there are some missing details that support the “not quite right for reason” conclusion? Because if you take the case as described, it is right in the Reason wheelhouse. At least it would be for the reason I’ve been following for the last couple of decades.
What is the ‘Fascism Forever Club’ Supreme Court pick Neil Gorsuch founded in 1980s?

I would say I’m surprised that Reason didn’t write about this, but that would distract from their Trump Derangement Syndrome
I would say I’m surprised that Reason didn’t write about this, but that would distract from their Trump Derangement Syndrome
I would say I’m surprised that Reason didn’t write about this, but that would distract from their Trump Derangement Syndrome
That tweet that’s linked to your name is a fucking embarrassment.
That’s just Reason’s new path, I guess.
Senate Republicans again suspended committee rules in order to advance the nomination of Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency.
Entitled. Rules. etc. etc.
The committee’s procedural rules allow them to be changed or suspended “by vote of a majority of committee members at a business meeting if a quorum is present.” Barrasso said the Senate parliamentarian had ruled Thursday’s procedure proper under those rules, though the Senator added that the Democrats’ boycott had “put us in?uncharted waters.”

Hey, is that not a valid point?

Heh.
Woman, 26, posts video on Twitter of herself performing oral sex on a man INSIDE a Florida courthouse before she faced a judge on drugs charges
Classy!
Yeah, classy. But why in the hell are the police bothering to “investigate” anything here? If nobody complained at the time, what is the point? That it was seen on the internet?
What a waste of time.
St. Paul woman pleads guilty to smothering her baby to death in 2015
!!!!!!!!!!!!! PUT BURMA ON THE LIST
Nutpunch of the Day. Note from KMW to sloopy:
Because cops beating a woman, then jailing her to cover up their assault isn’t Reason’s beat. Nope. It’s not Trumpy.
Next up: incisive libertarian commentary by Dalmia and Chapman. That’s Reason’s beat.
How is it “not right for reason”? Reason has covered all kinds of local stories like that. And it covers minor bullshit that happens on college campuses all of the time.
Because idiots like Dalmia have paid their dues for Reason while slapdicks like me haven’t, I guess.
That is indeed the begged question.
Exactly. That’s the part that’s not sitting well with me.
I’m not one to say ‘I’m not eating here anymore’ but I *was* going to subscribe to the print.
Now, I’m just gonna sit back and see where this publication goes.
Commentariat didn’t hit the donation goal, so fuck them this year?
You should know that I asked KMW that myself.
Want to know the response?
Crickets.
She’s not interested in your titty pix. Try Gillespie.
Hey, you’ve seen my pix. You should know that *everyone* is interested.
Considering you’re really a thirty-four year old fat, virgin male NSA honeypot I pity the girl who’s pictures you’ve stolen.
I don’t. Because that girl is still smokin’.
Hey, it was an equitable exchange of goods and/or services!
Great, now everyone is gonna send her dick pics. Not me, though. I have class.
You also have a small dick.
Your mother is a known fake news maker.
If only my mother were a fake news maker. Then they’d see fit to republish her writings. But being a victim of serious police abuse doesn’t get you shit here anymore.
It’s laughable. Too bad it’s making me weep for what was once an organization that gave a shit about police abuse.
Reason is the reason we know each other. Hell, if it weren’t for meeting up with you in DC that one summer, I’d have ended up in Pelosi’s dungeon, naked and afraid. It’s sad to see an organization that’s brought so many like minded people together coldly brush off a very relevant story from one of its most loyal readers and supporters. I guess we can blame this one on Trump too.
OT: in Pelosi’s dungeon, naked and afraid
Damn, that’s an awesome book title.
Well, it’s not Trump’s fault and there’s no food truck or Twitter rage involved… so, of course not, I guess… because Fuck us that’s why?
Right, Katherine. Because more Dalmia and Chapman are ‘quite right’ for Reason.
Riven wrote her as well and got blown off with a one-sentence reply.
Good luck with the donations this year, y’all.
And another thing…if I catch ONE Balko police abuse article that remotely resembles this one…man, am I gonna give a tongue lashing.
I don’t understand why making a few calls using their actual journalistic clout is a bridge too far for them. At the very least they can say they made some inquiries, gave it the ol’ college try, etc. It’s just disappointing.
Damn. The optimist inside me wants to say she’s in charge of the magazine, not the blog, so maybe… but I assume she’s talking about the outfit as a whole. Unless there are details about the incident that we haven’t heard about, it sounds exactly right for Reason, but I’m not that kind of editor.
I did have the opportunity to meet KMW last night; I really wish I was able to go, as I would have asked her about this face-to-face. Politely and not at all pushy, of course.
Tell the story here. All I’ve heard is that Reason won’t cover it.
Been done repeatedly over the last day or two.
A reasonable (drink!) summary
I had the chance to partake in our free Canadian HealthCare TM today. I spent more time talking to the old lady at the front desk than to the doctor. I just have a common cold, as I expected. I’d normally work it off, but I currently work in the food business and I don’t want to poison anyone. The good doctor decided not to give me time off work, even if I get into coughing and sneezing fit. Enjoy your fries, would you like some mucus with that?
And then they have the nerves to ask you 25$ for a piece of paper to tell your employer you were there…. Fuck single payer.
I would normally ask for some second medical advice here, but don’t worry, I won’t be poisoning anyone, as I learned I got fired; I was reaching the end of my trial period, no union for you! Oh well…
And here’s the funny thing….AMERICAN PROGRESSIVES THINK IT’S GRAND AND WANT IT!
Stupid, ignorant fucks.
I get the most preferential medical treatment in the country outside of the political class and I still think it sucks.
Get a load of ‘1%’ over here.
The 0.003% actually. 8 million military age males in this country and that’s what we’ve got.
Due to current circumstances, I want to punch US progressives on that subject. Just, hit them with the bat till they cry for Robby.
“Save me, O Glorious Finely Shampooed One! Save me from the Slavic fascist!”
God damn, JT, you say the sweetest things…
“I don’t know why it happened officer, my girlfriend and I were at the vegan cat cafe talking about how great universal healthcare would be, when suddenly Russian Rush Limbaugh burst through the door and headbutted her. Then he ran out into the street, flipped over a kebab stand, and rode off into the sunset yelling something about Bosnians.”
Sorry bout the job :/
Well, I’ll have to admit that I’m actually kind of glad I was sick this week. Reading the comments, it seems like it was shit all week long. I’ve been noticing a decline in the quality of the reasoning (drink!) behind some of the articles (just a lot of lazy re-posts), and I’ve noticed a lot of interesting commentators simply going away. It’s a sad thing.
Thanks for your support. But don’t worry, I think they messed up real bad when they fired me, so, being a libertarian, I’m at least going to enjoy being a litigious asshole for the next few weeks (I’d normally wouldn’t do that on a small business but the owners are really assholes that abuses of their employees; my manager literally told me they had nothing against me but were just letting me go because they wouldn’t be able to once I was unionized.) So the union might like to learn that.
Add that to the fact that if I hadn’t served on jury duty back in November, I would have accumulated enough time to be unionized. So I’m getting retaliation against me because I served on a jury, which is, well, quite illegal. I don’t really care about that job, but heh, why not raise a little hell every now and then?
P.S. : Sorry for your mom Sloopy. I think I can speak for everyone when I say we miss Balko.
Let me just precise that I’m far from being pro-union but they forced me to pay for the god-damn thing so I might as well use it.
While also enjoying the wonderful treatment of the often cited Canadian system… I recommend getting an actual Dr. Not a clinic… If you have one that is shit, fire his ass and get a new one. Oh and pay extra for a private plan, yes they exist! Mostly to cover prescriptions. I fired three before I hired Dr Al. dude’s pure gold. He knows that if I book an appt I’ve already mostly diagnosed myself and I’m in to confirm and or get a referral. Also get a better job. I’m never sick but I do call in from time to time. Sunny day, Superbowl Monday etc. I just call me receptionist… “Hi Cyth, I’m not coming in, clear my schedule and give my apolgies”
I know I haven’t been very active on here, but I’m just letting everyone know I’m officially done. My 67 year old mother-in-law was fucking body slammed and arrested by a thug cop and the news outlet I rely upon to shine the light on police abuse has written Ken to tell him that they will not help her. You can email me if you need to reach me.
Don’t blame you guys.
Good luck.
Sorry to see you go. Reason really shit the bed. I think it’s fair to lay the shitty direction of this publication at the feet of it’s editor-in-chief.
I am very sorry for what happened.
Maybe there’s somebody at Pajamas or maybe even Breitbart who’d be willing to one-up Reason here?
Alternatively, claim she’s a trans-minority and go for the Vox/Salon/MoJo/etc. gold.
I haven’t been a regular here, never having involved myself enough to be classified as one, but I’ve lurked for many years, and I honestly hope you, your husband, and the several others who’ve left in the last few days (and earlier, in fact) reconsider and return to the commentariat. Fuck the writers for their inanity. Let’s stick together her, and keep them honest, or keep trying to.
Me, too. I understand the frustration, but the good guys should stick around.
Apparently that isn’t as important as some guy in Canada who got a ticket for a cracked license plate.
Man, this fucking sucks.
Echoing the others. If it were another commenter, I wouldn’t be so critical of their decision. But you two named your daughter Reason, and they know that and celebrate it, for crying out loud. And what info that is out there makes this a classic HnR nutpunch story. Maybe when Trumpmania settles down and your MiL wins a million or two in damages, we’ll see a post.
From the Shikha tweeter feeder:
So a 90 day travel ban for certain indisputably high risk countries completely and totally outweighs the appointment of a libertarianish legal mind to sit on SCOTUS for a generation.
Yea she is nuts. Other than the immigration visa and green cards, it appears the order was on the up and up. Shika seems to forget immigration is a legitimate function of the federal government. I am not sure of any nation that has absolutely no restrictions on how or who comes in
regarding Ivanka Trrump:
True Marie Antoinette: Her dad is spreading havoc and suffering in the world and she’s partying!
Hey, we all saw those articles and tweets from the esteemed staff here lamenting Malia Obama smoking a fatty and twerking (in our tax dime) while her dad bombed the fuck out of every nation in the Middle East, ran a guns-for-terrorists program in Libya and completely destabilized Syria.
Wait, no we didn’t see them. Because they never existed. But Trump is spreading havoc and suffering.
Don’t forget that the cruelty in his first 12 days of the presidency doesn’t outweigh a libertarianish originalist on SCOTUS deciding cases for thirty or more years.
or does outweigh, rather*
libertarianish legal mind
lolwut?
libertarianish legal mind
lolwut?
Believes the Constitution means what it says and there are limits to government power; that’s as libertarian as we’re gonna get, I’m afraid.
i get why some folks don’t like school choice because they are worried it will go to a “religious” school and violate church/state. I don’t really agree with that notion but i can at least see where coming from
However the folks that say school choice is bad because it will ruin the public education system (these are proponents mind you)—> doesn’t this argument suggest the proponents think the public school system is not in great shape? Otherwise if those public schools are good/top notch, what exactly are they worried about?
Also there aren’t enough private schools to take in all public school kids (at least now).
School choice will be immensely beneficial to kids/parents that care about learning/education which are currently in a public school where most of student body/parents don’t give a chit
The Reason staff’s varieties of partial libertarianism are becoming subsumed under the progressive umbrella in the eyes of the readership, and understandably so. Countless different stances the writers of this publication have heretofore espoused are practically indistinguishable from the noxious blather outright progressives spew.
Progressivism is by its nature an irredeemably degenerate, diabolical ideology, and this magazine’s incremental transition to its tenets has condemned it to being but one more nondescript, stagnant pool of leftist claptrap.
Dalmia demonstrated a new and astounding moral decrepitude with her latest Tweets. How many more of you will cross the line?
Given that it’s Ayn Rand’s birthday, it certainly brings to mind her thoughts on this very same issue.
Progressive cognitive dissonance 101:
Prog: we need singlepayer because are healthcare costs too much and it would lower the amount spent
Me: (very condensed) making it free would mean more spending since it is free –> means massive tax increase, otherwise they will have to price/wage control and ration which is not a good long term strategy
Prog: we can’t put a price on healthcare
The Great H&R Commentariat Die-Off continues. You’d think the donation run would be an indicator to respond to market forces but it looks like they’ve decided to double down.
Moneybomb donations are a relatively small portion of the Reason foundation’s budget. What you’re seeing is a reflection of what the important donors want. For better or worse.
I hate to sound all tinfoily and leftist, but perhaps the Kochs have a little too much input?
I had the same thought. Cato, Heritage and AEI aren’t what they used to be either.
Wow. A strikingly similar thought, down to the lefty tin foil hat and everything. Now I’m having an existential crisis because I think I might just be one of your sock puppets.
At least we still have the Mises Institute.
What about the Messrs Institute?
Wait, are you suggesting they’re turning into a… kochservative outlet?
And probably what plays well on facebook and Twitter. I’m pretty sure facebook gets Reason and other sites way more hits than they used to get, hence the prevalence of hot-takes and churning out commentary over finding stories.
A race to the bottom (feeders).
While I still like this place well enough – I simply don’t read or comment on posts that don’t interest me! – I am bummed at what this mentality has done to my other favorite web places. My other main work distraction was the AV Club, which would put out some interesting film or TV features and had a fun community. Over the last 2 years, both have gone to shit in the way many of you see happening here: the content is needlessly and super-aggressively political, raising alarms at all times, and the commentariat has gone crazy to match it. Even when there is no political context to something, there will still be some comment making a super-weak Trump or Bush joke, and then they’re off.
I’ve also seen the same kind of shift in resources. They had built a pretty extensive TV wing, reviewing a lot of lower-rated shows and tracking down writers or directors for features. Now they’ve pared back their list of reviews, and focus instead on recycling content. Hot-takes and commentary.
And now iowahawk and popehat and all them are stepping back a bit on Twitter. Perhaps the ultimate legacy of Trump will be getting us to come to terms with how awful much of the Internet has gotten.
I’m going to go with worse.
Post the 990 for some fun too while you are at it:
https://www.reason.org/files/2015-reason_990.pdf
Does the staff actually care about the commentariat? I have been lurking for a while but can only afford to skim comments on slow days so there are large gaps in my knowledge.
I know some of them read and even respond, but I wonder if some wouldn’t consider it an improvement if regulars whose view don’t align with theirs leave in favor of more prog-flavored bleeding heart types.
We’re an annoyance, but we generate clicks.
We’re an annoyance.
Truth. However, a girl who was used in their recent fundraising effort had a grandmother who was assaulted by the police, so that is less “random commenter guy who is pointless and annoying because he uses adblock and refreshes 400x a minutes” and more “The one guy who is important? You’re not that important, but please, give us money and read another piece on police brutality tomorrow.”
I am interested if think a more lefty atmosphere or a more…decorous commenter base will replace the clicks, or whether they perceive the regulars as being enough of a financial plus to care one way or the other.
No, no, no. free markets.
The begathon didn’t work too well last year. Perhaps they’ll have more luck when they do so without using my children or me and my wife’s story every year going forward.
Yes. This is the important part. You are not some strange.
“”””prohibits nonprofits?churches in particular?from getting involved in the campaigns of political candidates.”””
How about instead we get rid of the idea of non-profits and instead if you don’t make a profit you don’t pay any taxes on that non existent profit. Everyone is in the same boat.
Get rid of charitable deductions as well, if you want to give money to Reason, why should you get a tax deduction. If I want to give money to Sally Big Boobs down at the strip joint I don’t get a tax deduction
Salli Big Boobs down at the strip joint I don’t get a tax deduction
You had a typo there.
This sloopy bullshit is terrible. What the fuck is the point of Reason if they don’t give a shit about police abuse? Is it just because the cop wasn’t wearing a Make America Great Again hat?
I already let my subscription expire but had been planning on donating next fundraiser but no way.
Hmmm sad day, I dedicate this to all the commentators who are leaving us, you will be missed.
That’s kind of you to say.
You all will also be missed.
See you later, Space Cowboys.
SEE YOU COWGIRL,
SOMEDAY, SOMEWHERE!
Goodbye, Riven.
It’s getting a little dusty in here these last couple of days.
This is more appropriate for our commenters
Shikha has certainly crossed a line with her “Milo made them do it!” defense of the Berkeley rioters.
I am astounded that Reason, with a years-long fetish for outrage every time a cop somewhere shoots a dog, would not find the public assault on the mother of an H&R commenter, a nurse doing her duty, to be worth coverage.
I agree that Reason seems to have gone off the rails, on open borders (for years, as I regularly complain) and now on Trump.
I am sorry to read about so many commenters leaving. I hope they return someday.
Fuck these budding pinkos. I’ll be damned if I let them chase me away, and I truly hope that’s the same attitude the likes of Sloopy, Lord Hummungus, Suthenboy, and the rest of them adopt, and return.
Eh. I’ve seen similarly chummy forums die before. When you can get a good bit of the gang together again somewhere else, it’s usually an unstoppable death spiral.
So those guys went and got their cylinder of steel back from its watery grave
Oh good. Shame to waste such a huge hunk of metal.
I figured they’d go back in the spring.
It’s Finland. That was mid-summer!
It’s hilarious to me that a number of the regular commenters seem to have got it into their minds that they are personally critical to the Foundation’s success.
We’re not. We’re just a bunch of barnacles that Reason has magnamiously chosen to humor for the last decade plus. We’re not actually important to pageviews. We’re not actually important to fundraising. We were allowed to remain because, we didn’t seem to hurt the actual work of the foundation and well, we “really seemed to care (about what I have no idea…)”
I suspect that the Foundation’s perception that we’re harmless has begun to change recently and the usual suspects crapping the bed under every single article is increasingly becoming an issue with the people the Foundation actually cares about.
I wouldn’t be suprised if the hinted at WordPress site is going to eliminate commenting all together.
Stop, stop, you’re killing me!
Barely a paragraph later, you do exactly that:
A couple dozen commenters is not “a lot of people”. You’re a rounding error in this site’s traffic. We don’t “hold it together”. Who will remain is the 99.999% of readers who could care less about the comments and probably won’t even notice you left.
Don’t worry, Stormy – you will get to keep Tony, Palin’s Buttplug, Original American Socialist, dajjal, et al to keep “Free Speech” Dalmia, Chapman, Richman, and company with faux Tweet based stories and dead grandmas.
Omnia transeunt et id quoque transibit
Like trolls are going to stick around when there’s no one left to pay attention to them.
I believe this is incorrect. Commenters bring in a lot of extra traffic from lurkers who like to read the comments.
True, Reason doesn’t “owe us” anything, but when part of your base revolts, that’s something to pay attention to.
I enjoyed the comments for a long time before posting.
Long Time Lurker here. Quick point of clarification. There are articles?
Just consider them long posts designed to get the conversation rolling.
Just registered to confirm. This long time lurker has almost solely visited reason because of the Commentariat. The site has long left me ideologically, however I could always count on the members here providing far better insight to a news piece than anything most of the writers here lately could come up with. You and your fellow commentators are easily some of the most intelligent people I’ve come across in any space such as this. If Reason had any sense they’d do better paying at random any one of you to write a story on a selected topic than letting another one of these ‘professionals’ waste our time and digital bandwidth. I do selfishly hope they come back and the rest of you stay on otherwise I know others like me won’t have any reason for coming back either.
I was lurking here when the baby Reason naming was going on and cannot express any further loathing upon this publication for using their person and child for donations they never actually needed, and then proceeding to tell them to kindly f*** off when a relevant story comes around that could give them some sorely needed PR within the community.
Maybe Reason will finally listen to their readership for once instead of continuing to turn into another sycophantic arm for the Regressive Left. I doubt it though, unfortunately as Stormy said, you guys make up such a tiny portion of the revenue they won’t think there’s any reason to pay attention.
Certainly doesn’t look good that, when the Editor At LARGE checks one of his posts to promote a media appearance, all he sees are shitposts about how he’s a cuck and SJW. It would be sad if they revamp the blog to eliminate comments, as manic as they can be and as bad as they might look to Serious People. Though I would prefer that to switching to facebook comments. *shudder*
I never use Facebook comments. Who can speak their mind on anything political, knowing that employers and prospective employers will be able to read it?
(I admit I am regularly surprised at the vitriolic, offensive partisanship that many people seem fine with putting online under their real names.)
I use to have a fake facebook account for commenting but eventually deleted it. I certainly wouldn’t trust facebook to not hand over information when the DoJ requests it.
Agreed. It’s mind-boggling. But then, judging from what they post, those people tend to be very, very stupid.
A fake account like Krabappel mentioned is one work-around, but that just sounds unhealthy to me.
On the Grandma thing….
PNAC might publish a writeup of the story if you send it.
Well. This blows. The only reason I still come here is for the commentaries, and now that KMW has given the middle finger to sloop they’re going to lose that too. I wish I had been a more active commenter, I’ve always kind of lurked. I’ll miss you guys.
I only come for the comments, so I’m done. I used to read an article or post now and again, but lately they’ve all been crap. Even last night’s lynx were just a bunch of ‘waaaaaahTrump’ nonsense.
It’s day drinking, man. I’m already giving up. I’ll make like Moobs and cry about it.
“You went full Schumer. NEVER go full Schumer.”
*drops gloves and grabs man-tits*
Moobs are genetically linked. If you have one of those square, “barrel chested” bodies you can have a quite high BMI and never get moobs. Other body types start getting moobs at or near the “obesity” level. And then there is gynecomastia (Schumer) where you get moobs even with a low BMI.
I know. *hangs head but bounces off of moobs
I’m broad shouldered and tend toward trim. No problem getting my pecs to pop. Truly, I am an Adonis.
*grabs another beer*
Pics?
M ( . Y , ) bs.
Someday. I tend toward trim but I need to make the effort. It’s funny how insanely eligible I am but I’m still single. I chalk it to to perfectionism.
