A federal judge in New York in temporarily halted portions of President Trump's executive order suspending entry to the U.S. from seven "countries of concern," ordering that legal permenent residents and others already approved to enter the U.S. be allowed to do so. Later on over the weekend, John Kelly, the secretary of homeland security, issued a statement that all legal permanent residents from the countries of concern would be permitted. Democrats in the Senate say they will introduce legislation to overturn the order; some Senate Republicans have also criticized the move. Trump spoke with the king of Saudi Arabia and the crown prince of the United Arab Emirates, and according to the White House they agreed to set up safe zones for refugees in the Middle East. Uber turned off surge pricing during protests against the order at JFK Airport, where taxicabs had joined protesters. It was called a strike breaker for extending the courtesy and is now the target of a boycott for its CEO sitting on an advisory council for Trump.
A U.S. commando was killed in the first counter-terrorism raid in Yemen since 2014, and the first operation ordered by Trump. The U.S. says it killed 14 militants while local reports say about 30 people, including 10 women and children, including the 8-year-old daughter of Anwar al-Awlaki, were killed.
Two suspects are in custody after gunmen opened fire in a mosque in Quebec City, killing at least six and injuring more than a dozen.
Police in the Philippines are suspending the drug war to combat corruption among their ranks.

  All versions of the all-star games feel even less exciting than preseason to me. The skill competitions can be kind of fun, but in a "on in the background way", not something I'm going to actively watch.
  
  Give me a game with actual consequence. On that not, I've still got some Super Bowl squares left. $10 per square to win prizes of $100 for the score at the end of the first 3 quarters, and $200 for the final score (with the remaining money going to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation). So even if you're not a fan of either team at least you'll have something to root for during the game!

    I don't know how you could assign consequence, other than giving home ice advantage in the finals to the winning conference, but you'd have to go back to the old East vs West game. The current scheme is marginally more interesting. But as for making the games mean something, no one wants to put all their stars in one basket if that basket might demand actual checking and shot blocking.

Why them and not , say,Thornton, Ciccarelli, Chara, Iginla, Hawerchuk? Shit, Perry or Getzlaf too. It's so dumb. And why cap it at an arbitrary 100 anyway?

      Yeah, I agree - there's a lot of questionable choices there and I don't disagree with anything you've pointed out. I've got a particular hard on for Fuhr though. I started watching hockey right in the middle of his prime and he was already below average. It's like looking at a GOAT list and seeing Mike Smith on it. Most of the guys there were at least top-5 at their own position for an extended period.
      
      Generational bias is my guess. The bulk of the living HHOF and the league admin grew up watching or playing with the guys that dominated the list.

      I always liked Shanahan - one of the most complete all around players of his era. But 100 is a small number and this is an old sport. As usual, I'm sure the ancient players on the list were truly great, and the more contemporary ones more questionable.

282) (Part I of II) When I was a kid, I had a friend who could never let any contradiction pass him by. If he stated a fact, and somebody said, "That's not true," or, "You don't know what you're talking about," he would argue and argue, no matter how obvious it was the other kid was just trying to bust his balls. It didn't take long for other kids to catch on and every day at recess they would rile him into a crimson-faced sputtering rage. He was constantly in and out of the principal's office for screaming at other kids, which they had driven him to. It was pretty sad, because he was bright, creative, and funny when you weren't pushing his buttons. I actually liked hanging out with him after school.

    Oh, but they do, JATNAS, they so do. First, outrage over Trump prevents them from asking their leadership tough questions about their drubbing in the recent election. Second, they've stated that they are going full opposition to the President; see point number one, also payback for the perceived snubs against Obama. Third, they have convinced themselves that if they fail to oppose any one action they are giving in; but they will not be able to maintain this momentum over the coming weeks and months.

    What's funny is that Trump is using pace to keep them in a permanent state of outrage. By doing 5 or 6 things they hate a week, they can't even decide which to protest next Saturday. When the protests become just a weekly event - regular people will simply ignore as they live their lives.

Bucks County Authorities Make Arrest In Fetish-Themed Child Predator Sex Ring

Authorities in Bucks County make an arrest in a fetish-themed child predator sex ring they say was going on for the better part of a decade.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said for the last seven years at least four men sexually abused a young boy at sex parties where the men would dress up like different animals.

"This child victim was repeatedly abused by a group of criminals who cared only about their gratification, they cared nothing about this young boy," he said. "This is a horrendous case."

Police find man who said he was 'too high' surrounded by Doritos

The Youngstown Vindicator reports that on Friday police responded to the 22-year-old man's home in Austintown around 5:20 p.m., where they could hear the man groaning from a room. That's when officers found him lying "on the floor in the fetal position" and "surrounded by a plethora of Doritos, Pepperidge Farm Goldfish and Chips Ahoy cookies," the police report said.

He also claimed he couldn't feel his hands because he had smoked too much marijuana. The man gave police the keys to his car where he said he had smoked the marijuana and they recovered a glass pipe, rolling papers, roaches and a glass jar of marijuana.

Report: Quebec City Mosque Shooter Yelled 'Allahu Akbar'

Canadian media are reporting that one of the shooters at a Quebec City mosque shouted "Allahu Akbar" while killing as many as six people.

La Presse is reporting that police are considering the mass shooting a terrorist attack. Quebec's premier, Philippe Couillard called it a "terrorist" act on Twitter.

The report seems, on the face of it, confusing, since the target was a mosque. The mosque has also been the subject of hate crimes in the past; for example, a pig's head was left at the mosque in June. The motive has not yet been released by authorities, and the identities of the suspects are not yet publicly known, although two people are under arrest, Reuters is reporting. Some media reports said there was possibly a third suspect. A report on Quebec TV said one shooter has an Arabic origin name, and a second has a Quebec origin name, but this was not confirmed by authorities.

  That story was breaking when I went to bed last night. On Twitter lots of tweets from Canadian MPs and other prominent figures decrying bigotry and expressing solidarity with Canadian Muslims and refugees. One guy explicitly blamed Trump for the shooting.

    We've had a few side threads on it over the weekend. Short version: she's a nurse (RN). She was at a high school basketball game where her husband was coaching. A kid had a severe asthma attack and collapsed near the sideline. She went to his aid while the EMTs were called. She tried to get the ref to pause the game while she rendered aid and to allow the EMTs access. When the ref refused, she got... assertive, because of her duty to the patient. Cops tackled and beat her.

Trump's heartland voters shrug off global uproar over immigration ban

A senior Trump administration official said political considerations had little to do with the executive orders. They rather represent a reaction to the 2015 mass shooting in San Bernardino, California; the Boston Marathon bombing; and multiple attacks by radicalized groups in Europe.

"The reality is that the situation that exists today in parts of France, Germany and parts of Belgium is not a situation that we want replicated inside the United States," one official told Reuters.

Candace Wheater, a 60-year-old retired school cafeteria worker from Spring Lake, Michigan, also referenced the attacks in Brussels and Paris.

"Look at what's happening in Europe," she said. "I don't dare travel there, out of fear."

Steve Hirsch, 63, from Manassas, Virginia, drove to Washington's Dulles airport on Sunday to pick somebody up, rather than to protest as hundreds of others did.

He said he supported Trump's order. "A country is not a country if it doesn't have borders," he added.

        Yeah, I remember there was a flap about Trump wanting to raise the standard deduction high enough that most people would no longer need to itemize their deductions and the flap was that Trump wanted to eliminate itemized deductions for the middle class, i.e., raise taxes on them. Itemized deductions, like the AMT, were supposed to be something aimed at the rich with complicated income streams, not something the average paycheck earner would ever get involved in.

        There's not much too elaborate on. The landlord (usually an LLC or LP or S corp) can deduct the cost of operating the business. This includes interest on the debt financed property. No different than Ford deducting interest on a debt-financed factory.
        
        On personal returns, tax deductions are more restrictive than on corporate returns. Mortgage interest on personal residences is currently deductible. But perhaps not for long. If you own six homes, you don't get to deduct the interest on all of them.

    My brother-in-law called me Saturday to tell me he got his W-2 and wants me to come over and do his taxes. Which I'm dreading because his taxes are a real simple short-form but he always wants me to figure them both ways and when I explain to him - again - that he doesn't have enough deductions to itemize he wants to argue about it. And again I'll have to explain to him that it's not a mortgage deduction, it's a mortgage interest deduction. Yeah, we used to file long-form and take the deduction but once you've got the mortgage paid down to the point where you're paying principal instead of interest, the deduction is no longer valuable so stop asking me why we're not itemizing your deductions to take off the house payment.

For the government, it means you're going to stay put in one place where they know where to find you - and you're going to have to be working hard to stay gainfully employed at generating tax revenue like a good little cash cow.         Isn't this more about the price of financing? I'm not sure how the home price going up or down really changes the fact that 'not giving' isn't 'taking'. Is it necessarily bad if home prices fell by ten percent if that is the case? If reducing taxes changes the price of something, I dare say the price of that thing is more reflective of real value than the presence of a tax would produce.

Botox treatments for those 19 to 34 years old shot up by 41?percent between 2011 and 2015, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The use of Botox tends to rise and fall with the economy. It peaked prerecession in 2005, fell off dramatically during the downturn and now has returned to high levels, with more than half a million procedures a year in this age range.

At Minneapolis Plastic Surgery and Carillon Clinic in Maple Grove, Golden Valley and Woodbury, Botox business among millennials has doubled in five years.

Young women are getting the message that fillers and freezers will keep them in the fountain of youth longer and delay the need for more invasive procedures down the road.

"Botox is being marketed in a preventive sense, rather than a treatment sense," said plastic surgeon Richard Tholen, of Minneapolis Plastic Surgery and Carillon Clinic.

This was the best possible humanitarian outcome from the beginning. For the same cost of putting one migrant in the west, they could help 12 migrants in the Middle East in this way. Plus we get the added benefit of lower terrorist risk and fewer gang rapes.

OK, so the latest on this "secret" derpbook group, March for Science, which I've been invited to join. Much delicious infighting over the weekend about the dearth of "minority" viewpoints on their feed; IOW, they are paralyzed by their own perceived over-whiteness and over-maleness. While I find this particular group silly and inconsequential, it's a fascinating tutorial on how the intersectionality people worm their way into any prog cause. Because you totally cannot say anything about CAGW without an accompanying manifesto on racism, transphobia, etc.

It is going to be very interesting when these people encounter a 1A or 4A issues and try to co-opt libertarians and independents to help. You know they are going to try to be in-charge and control the message. They will then be shocked and angry when people don't want to play along with them.

Ohio teen zaps cop with stun gun to fulfill bucket-list wish

NEWARK, Ohio ? Police in central Ohio have helped a teenage leukemia patient cross off a bucket-list item that was seriously shocking: She wanted to use a stun gun on someone.

Sixteen-year-old Alyssa Elkins got to do that Sunday. After a bit of training from Newark police, she zapped Sgt. Doug Bline as her supporters watched.

Bline winced and fell onto a mat, guided by spotters. He says being hit with a Taser is an unpleasant experience but it was worth it to help fulfill Alyssa's wish.

She had made her bucket list when her leukemia returned and she decided not to undergo further treatment. The Columbus Dispatch reports she added the stun-gun item half-jokingly, after seeing video of her uncle, a state trooper, being hit with a Taser during his training.

Changing the Guard Ceremony At Queen's Windsor Castle Axed Due To Security Fears

A Changing the Guard ceremony at Windsor Castle has been scrapped because of concerns that tourists could be a target for jihadists carrying out a truck attack.

The popular 45-minute guard ceremony at Windsor Castle, in which troops dressed in a bearskin hat and a red tunic are replaced by fresh sentries led by a regimental band, will no longer take place on Saturdays. So Trump's seven countries are Syria, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.

Which is pretty much what I expected. Trump doesn't have the balls to even consider Saudi Arabia. Nevermind the fact that this supposed act to prevent terrorist attacks ignores the people behind the biggest attack.

This is just a law (well not even a law, an executive proclamation) designed to make people feel safe, without (heaven forbid) ~OFFENDING~ the worse allies we have who are behind much of the terrorism in the world.

    Maybe. But the media isn't. There have been other big shootings or terror attacks up there and there was no delay in saying who they had. They got the guys leaving the scene. So if there is a larger group, they know the shooters have been arrested. So not saying they have them doesn't help capture the rest of the group. It is very interesting.

I was just thinking about something the other day. George HW Bush was President when I started college in '91. One of my girlfriends had a roommate with a poster comparing George HW to Hitler. Not W, mind you, his dad. It said something like, "Hitler killed millions with rifles, gas chambers, etc... Bush killed millions with AIDS, just AIDS." So, hyperbole is not exactly new with the left. Every new Republican President brings about some sort of nostalgia for past Republican Presidents who were "not so bad". Just make me wonder, who's coming after Trump?     If things don't change, at some point, something like that is going to happen, especially in Europe. People are not going to be terrorized and not take matters into their own hands.
    
    You don't know much about European history, do you? Europeans have off and on been terrorized by marauding hordes of invaders for centuries and they just shrug it off. Keep your head down and don't make waves and maybe the axe will fall on somebody else's head.
    
    There are a few places - Great Britain, notably - where they have a history of taking matters into their own hands when they've taken all the crap they can stand, but other places have a long history of assuming their rulers rule by Divine Right and what can you do about it?
