Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has canceled his trip to Washington, D.C., over that whole border wall thing and who will be paying for it.

  • The media-starved Doomsday Clock is back and says we're more doomed than we've been since the 1950s.
  • Senior leaders at the State Department have resigned. So has Border Patrol chief Mark Morgan, who had clashed with the union.
  • A San Diego high school student who sued over being forced to urinate in a bucket by a teacher will get $1.25 million from the school district. (A nice reminder that it's National School Choice Week!)
  • A federal judge has blocked the use of lethal injections to execute three prisoners in Ohio as unconstitutional, citing evidence from other states that the drug cocktail didn't adequately sedate people as it was killing them.
  • The share of American workers who belong to unions fell to its lowest level on record in 2016. Only 10.7 percent of workers belong to unions.

Failure to cite a link - DQ.

Would have lost more points for being a reply instead of an original comment.

I'm still rather puzzled over how he thinks Mexico can be compelled to pay for it.

The only suggestion I've heard is doing it by stealing money from people who want to send money to Mexico.

        1. Pan Zagloba   8 years ago

"Border Wall: 0.5%" charge on everything coming from Mexico?

              1. Zeb   8 years ago

Maybe he'll take a cue from the mayor of Philadelphia and complain when companies have the audacity to pass the new taxes on to their customers.

            3. thom   8 years ago

This will hurt both the USA and Mexico. Trump has to have been advised of this. Maybe he is hoping that Mexico realizes they're going to lose either way, so would be better off just going splitsies?

              Lindsey Graham? @LindseyGrahamSC

            That's a lot of chiclets.

        2. C. Anacreon   8 years ago

Exactly. Impose a 2% fee on any money wired or otherwise transferred between the US and Mexico. This often comes from under-the-table pay that was never taxed in the first place, so a 2% imposition wouldn't be unreasonable.

          1. Zeb   8 years ago

I suppose it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. But a lot of that money has been taxed too. And a decent amount comes from American citizens and legal residents.

Seems to me that a country is responsible for securing its own borders. Maybe that's just me.

          2. PapayaSF   8 years ago

That, plus zero out foreign aid to Mexico, and increased border-crossing fees.

        3. ant1sthenes   8 years ago

Next time Mexican soldiers take shots at Border Patrol, he'll threaten conventional military retaliation, and exact the wall fee as a toll?

      3. Bobarian (Would Chip Her)   8 years ago

The wall is gonna go up so fast; he was worried he'd be caught on the wrong side!

        1. Zero Sum Game   8 years ago

"At EPA headquarters, the mood remains dark," ProPublica reported Wednesday. "A longtime career communications employee said in a phone interview Tuesday that more than a few friends were 'coming to work in tears' each morning as they grappled with balancing the practical need to keep their jobs with their concerns for the issues they work on."That level of impartiality says a whole lot about the functioning of the EPA and why maybe it was a great idea to muzzle the fucks.

        "Dream on white boy...."

    4. Curt   8 years ago

      Just because.

There are 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day. We'll call that about 1,440 minutes in a day. So, let's assume that 1,440 minutes to midnight is Adam chillin' in the garden of Eden without that nag bothering him or any concerns about snakes and eating magic apples. Zero minutes to midnight is four really creepy horses riding across the sky as the entire world's nuclear arsenal explodes while a comet strikes the earth because Bruce Willis and Jack Bauer couldn't save us.

So, at 2.5 minutes to midnight 99.8% of the way to the apocalypse. If we assume we're working on a one hour timeline instead of 24, we're still 96% of the way to the apocalypse.

Ain't really much room to go forwards. What will they do if something bad happens? Or even something really bad? But, I guess over-exaggerators gotta over exaggerate.

"Die!" High school teacher stages mock assassination of Trump

A Texas high school art teacher has been placed on administrative leave after video surfaced showing her "shooting" President Donald Trump inside a classroom while screaming, "Die!"

The Secret Service field office in Irving tells me they are aware of the incident, but declined further comment.

The teacher, at W.H. Adamson High School in Dallas, posted the video to her Instagram account along with the following message: "Watching the #inauguration in my classroom like?#no #stop #denial #squirtgun #hypocrisy #powerless #saveusall #teachthembetter #atleastitsfriday."

Voices can be heard in the background ? but the school district would not say if students witnessed the teacher's disturbing demonstration.

    MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD

Turn your passive participation into active resistance. Facebook likes and Twitter retweets don't create the change you want to see.

Spend 5 minutes, make 5 calls.

There's one simple and straightforward way to influence the Government that is supposed to represent you: Call them on the phone.

Calling is the most effective way to influence your representative. 5 Calls gives you contacts and scripts so calling is quick and easy. We use your location to give you your local representatives so your calls are more impactful.

Busted: Feds charge cashier with stealing $9.5 million

(CNN)What would you buy with $9.5 million?
Luxury cars? High-end jewelery? Designer purses? That's what authorities say Cynthia Mills did with the millions of dollars she embezzled from her (now former) employer, Matthews International Corporation.

Federal prosecutors in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, claim Mills -- a former cashier and treasure specialist -- stole $9.5 million from the company between 1999 and 2015.

Matthews International is a publicly traded company that specializes in cemetery products, ornate engravings and manufacturing cast bronze plaques for memorials and monuments.
From homes to fine furs, Mills is accused of funding a lavish lifestyle that authorities are calling one of the largest embezzlement cases in western Pennsylvania history.

Yeah, it was originally to be a march of scientists, for science. Within the first twenty-four hours it became a march for anyone who fucking loves science. "Science" defined as marching in lock-step with the CAGW alarmists. Unknown whether they've been bludgeoned into going anti-GMO and anti-nuclear energy.

Years ago, I exchanged a couple emails with a libertarian anti-war activist, asking her if her group was planning on participating in a large national march in DC. She brushed me off, saying she was only interested in organizing on a national scale, not a local DC scale. I didn't bother to argue with her that it was a national march, taking place in DC.

Shia LaBeouf arrested at his anti-Trump art installation

(CNN)Actor and performance artist Shia LaBeouf has been charged with misdemeanor assault and a harassment violation after getting in a scuffle during a rally against Donald Trump early Thursday morning, according to New York Police Department spokesman Sgt. Thomas Antonetti.
LaBeouf was arrested and has been released, according to Det. Christopher Pisano.
LaBeouf and a 25-year-old anti-Trump protester got into a verbal exchange in front of the Museum of the Moving Image, and then police say LaBeouf pulled on the man's scarf, scratching his face while doing so, according to Antonetti.[...]

LaBeouf is planning to protest President Trump for the next four years with an art exhibit that will run continuously outside the museum.

The installation consists of a white wall with the words "HE WILL NOT DIVIDE US" on it and a camera beneath the words.

The teen was told that after she was done, she could pour the contents of the bucket in a sink in the storage room.

That's the problem with our public school teachers right there in a nutshell. Why the unnecessary steps? Why not instruct the student to urinate directly in the slop sink? smdh

Please, no: My foster daughter received a pet fish at a birthday party

ranted on Facebook, and a work acquaintance confessed to giving hermit crabs to the attendees at her nephew's birthday. She said the kids thought she was the greatest. Last year, a neighbor found herself the unwitting recipient of two aquatic turtles when her child celebrated her fourth birthday. They died a few months later, bringing more trauma to a kid who was already struggling to cope with her parents' divorce.

And that was my fear. The Toddler had already suffered so much in her short life ? what new ordeal would the death of a pet be? My Facebook rant ended with: "I'm not religious but please, God, don't let me kill this poor critter."

Here's why the American Psychological Association weighed in on Trump's Standing Rock decision

"Given our skills as psychologists, we stand ready to participate in constructive problem resolution, as well as provide support for those who were and remain in harm's way ? physically, psychologically and spiritually," APA President Antonio E. Puente said. "We ask that the new administration not repeat the mistakes of the past, and that it respect the sovereignty, welfare and culture of our native peoples."

Move over, The Avengers, The Psychologists are here!

    1. Crusty Juggler - #2   8 years ago

Native Americans have greater psychological distress and higher suicide rates than other racial groups in America, data has shown. They're prone to mental and behavioral health issues, ranging from post traumatic stress disorder to depression to substance abuse. One reason for this, research suggests, is historical trauma ingrained in their culture since Europeans began taking over their land and killing their people more than 500 years ago. The resulting low socio-economic status coupled with feelings of lost identity creates a hopelessness passed on through generations, said Teresa LaFromboise, a Stanford University psychologist who studies American Indian adolescent suicide prevention.

What the fuck insane generalization is that.

First, I'll accept that some of the Indian nations were legitimate nations and we screwed them, though I don't know the history well. But other regions of the country were either ruled by, or in constant danger from, the worst sort of bloodthirsty savages, and we did everyone a favor by getting rid of them.

Second, making generalizations about the mindset of a large diverse group of people based on ancestry is ordinarily considered racist -- why is it not with the APA???

      3. creech   8 years ago

Maybe I'm wrong but it seems to me that the generic American Indian has been the most celebrated and admired ethnic/racial group for the last fifty years or so. Honest, brave, stoic, respecter of the earth, nerly always the sympathetic character in film and tv.

Thousands of Criminal Illegal Immigrants Sent Home After Apprehension at Southwest Border

Nearly 4,000 illegal immigrants apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol at the southwest border over a three-year period were allowed to return to their home countries despite having past criminal convictions and connections to criminal networks.

The statistic is included in a new government audit exposing shortcomings in the way Border Patrol agents deal with illegal immigrants caught trying to cross the border into the United States.

Border Patrol agents use the Consequence Delivery System, or CDS, to classify apprehended aliens using seven criminal and noncriminal categories. They then decide which of eight consequences the apprehended aliens should receive, based on how effective the consequences are in preventing the individuals from trying again to illegally enter the United States. [...]

However, Border Patrol agents incorrectly classified roughly 15,000 criminal alien apprehensions between fiscal years 2013-15, according to a Government Accountability Office report issued this month. Twenty-four percent of these aliens, or 3,717, were allowed to voluntarily return to their countries of origin. Voluntary return is rated as the least effective and efficient of the consequences. More severe consequences include criminal prosecution.

Re: Trump and incrementalism regarding taxes and regulations.

    A. Status Quo.

    or

    B. 75% cut in federal regulations/ plus the Trump tax plan of 4 brackets and clearing low earners off the rolls/15% tax ceiling on business/eliminating marriage penalty and death tax/simplifying tax code.

However this comes with the 20% tariff.

I personally would swap B for the status quo, but I'm curious what people here think.

    1. DOOMco   8 years ago

I don't know. B sounds better till the tariff part. Our government was using tariffs as its main source of funding for a while there, so it at least worked in that era.
I saw something recently that even though most people want to buy american, less than 10% of americans can say they only buy products made here.
If B does happen, I would hope that the resulting expansion in jobs and money and buying power would outweigh the negatives from a tariff that high.

I just read the Wikipedia article about the Doomsday Clock... It sounds like a bunch of overpaid dinguses sit around in a room and come up with numbers based on their emotions about the current political climate.

I thought it was some "mathematical model" that claims to predict the nuclear apocalypse based on a bunch of different metrics, but it's not even that. It's just people making shit up.

Five States Are Considering Bills to Legalize the 'Right to Repair' Electronics

The bills are squarely aimed at the "authorized repair" model that creates aftermarket monopolies dominated by the manufacturers themselves. For example, Apple has never authorized an independent company to repair iPhones, even though hundreds of companies do so every day (its authorized repair program is only for Mac computers).

Many of these independent repair shops exist in limbo: Acquiring parts usually means going on the Chinese grey market or salvaging parts from recycled devices. In the past, the Department of Homeland Security has raided independent repair shops who have unknowingly sold counterfeit parts (itself a confusing distinction, considering many of the internal parts of the iPhone have been commoditized).

    1. flye   8 years ago

A few years ago I went to a local shop to get my iPhone screen repaired. Small storefront in downtown, cash only, just the owner and his wife working there. He had to keep it overnight to fix it.

Last month I visited the same place for another screen repair, this time he had at least 8 people working, a fancier computerized check-in and payment system, nice lobby, professional signage, and a 1-hour turnaround. He had himself a going fucking concern there.

      I love America.

Sometimes I think Dave Chapelle wasn't joking with that whole, "well, just sprinkle some crack on them" thing that cops do.

Prosecutors have ruled that the shooting by an El Cajon officer was justified. Authorities say Olango pointed an e-cigarette device at the officer that could have been mistaken for a gun.

    1. Juice   8 years ago

People around here do it all the time. I overhear people speaking, say, Ahmaric in a restaurant, but 1/4 of the words coming out will be English. I'm talking about just throwing English words and Ahmaric words into the same sentence for some reason. I've also seen tons of foreign commercials that throw in English words for some reason. You'd think they'd have their own word for it, but I'm guessing English sounds cool or something. Asian countries do this the most. I think.

      1. But Enough About Me   8 years ago

Was just in the bank this afternoon, and the lady ahead of me was talking to the male teller primarily in Cantonese. They kept dumping English words into their back-and-forth, so I was able to follow the gist of the conversation. Interesting.

Speaking of the Avengers, it may be time to institutionalize Joss Whedon.

We have a dictator. Wow. We're THAT country now.

I don't mean to be meddlesome, but sometimes it's warranted.

    1. Kurmudgeonly Kristen   8 years ago

I'm always amazed that he's the person behind Firefly. But then again, tribal folk always suffer from massive cognitive dissonance.

      1. Pan Zagloba   8 years ago

Tim Minear, too! There might be something about collaboration that brought the best out of them both.

Also, Firefly wasn't as good as people claim. I was there, watching it every Friday in first run, so I get to say it!

        1. Not a True MJG   8 years ago

I think Minear is a legit libertarian, or libertarianish. Supposedly he's the one who pushed that angle in the TV show, but the movie is the most radical of the franchise, and Dollhouse and Avengers both had similar sentiments.

I remember watching a few episodes when it originally aired, and thought it was pretty lame. Airing it out of order and inconsistently probably had a lot to do with it.

        2. Kurmudgeonly Kristen   8 years ago

Also, Firefly wasn't as good as people claim.

This is sacrilege in my household! The only episode I didn't like was the one with the pregnant whore. Although Jayne was in rare form.

          1. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

Omg that was a great episode. Mal lets down the gruff exterior and bones the red head, even though we were all pining for Mal and Inara to hook up. Ohhhh Season 2 whhhhhyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!! Gah there would have been a great Mal backstory ep.

            1. Kurmudgeonly Kristen   8 years ago

It was pretty much that that episode was the most "Western" one, and I hate Westerns.

The Message (Mal gets his buddy in the mail, Mal gets buddy killed by being a dick, villains don't shoot witnesses who just told them they know their secret) made me angry. Jayne hat or no.

Ariel was best by far and it didn't use half the cast.

Deadpool proved what I always suspected, Whedon totally fucked up by not giving Morena Baccarin more funny stuff to do.

            1. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

villains don't shoot witnesses who just told them they know their secret

              eh?

That episode was the weakest cause they kept replaying that dudes Message

              1. Pan Zagloba   8 years ago

So dudes come in, shoot the idiot, and Book says basically "You're a dirty lawman out of your jurisdiction."

Somehow that cows them into leaving without blowing up the Serenity and everyone inside it.

Then Mal is like, "Yup, I wasn't gonna hand you in, idiot, but I wasn't gonna tell you that, no matter how agitated you got. Because I'm a dick and fuck people who don't do as I say." (that part was at least in-character)

Then the idiot dies and it's supposed to be sad, because writing.

                1. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

                  No, no, no.

Mal shoots the idiot cause he is holding Kaylee hostage.

And the dirty cops leave because of the implication that Serenity knows they are dirty, they are chasing them in a off the books missions, and if they don't leave Serenity's crew was going to leave them as corpses in the canyon cause the rat fuckers didn't have any backup, didn't tell the alliance they were there, and thus, Serenity could fly away scot-free after killing them.

                  1. Pan Zagloba   8 years ago

Right, but idiot took Kaylee because (outside "we need him to not be sympathetic when he dies") he thought Mal was gonna hand him over. Mal could have told him "we're not handing you over, idiot." Then shot him if he was still being an idiot. Or could have told him plan straight from the start - this ain't the army no more, Cap'n.

Serenity ain't got weapons. Cops should know that. Still see no reason not to blow Serenity up the moment they undock.

                    1. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

I agree it was retarded of Mal to not just say, "Bro I ain't turning you in." That has always bothered me.

Once the dirt cops send the away team to Serenity though the getting blown away bit is off the table, especially cause Boss Cop went down in person. Which they only did because they thought their cover as cops was still intact. Enter Shepherd Book with the expert knowledge.

            1. John Titor   8 years ago

I watched the special features of the DVD a long ass time ago, but the thing that always stuck with me is a bit where they're interviewing Whedon about doing the movie, and he says something along the lines of "I wanted to make one more thing to see if it had a shot, a sort of mouth-to-mouth. Anything after this is just necrophilia."

          2. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

They are not acting out of reason, but a pain that cannot end.

          3. Kurmudgeonly Kristen   8 years ago

They were building up to some really great storylines when they got the axe. That's the part that grinds my gears. But I agree that it's way too late for a re-do. And I wouldn't be in favor of getting new, younger actors for a reboot, either.

And the chicks kicked some serious ass last night.

    1. John   8 years ago

I am watching the recording of it tonight. I want to see Ivar finally do in Largatha. I loved that character but it has run its course. When she whacked the other chick, the die was cast. Ivar must kill her and kill her brutally.

      1. Pan Zagloba   8 years ago

Of course, the only man who could muster the resolve to kill Lagertha would be "The Boneless".

      2. Kurmudgeonly Kristen   8 years ago

I'm OK with killing off Lagertha. If you do a little Wikipedia-ing on these people, you'll see where they're going with the story, and for it to advance, peeps gotta die.

I know Ivar was a famous warrior, so his character is not getting killed off anytime soon, but I fuckin hate that guy. It's more the actor that irritates me than the character. Reminds me of a combination of a young Brian Austin Greene and Justin Bieber.

You leave Ivar alone!! I love that guy.

    Mostly OT:

I've realized that most people can only comprehend two positions on Trump:

A: "He's the worst president in history, and he's also literally the next Hitler"
B: "He's the greatest president ever and nothing he ever does is wrong"

I was trying to explain to someone today that I think he's a dunce (especially on economics) but his stated positions are really nothing out of the ordinary and that he's certainly not the next Hitler. I just stopped talking and went back to work eventually because this person kept accusing me of being a "Trump lover".
