That pic looks dirty.
It's the inside of Meryl Streep's soul.
Or the inside of her whatever.
Um....that looks like a cherry, so no.
Looks like there's blood coming out of her whatever

La La Land won a record breaking seven awards at the Golden Globes.
It's a modern day Hamilton.
Hollywood actors just don't get enough credit. We need more award ceremonies.
They are an oppressed minority, living in constant fear or the trumpenshaffel.
Of course a movie about entertainment people in LA, constructed mostly out of redone scenes from other movies, gets these kinds of awards. It was made for this audience. Outside of Hollywood, nobody is much interested. Its not doing much box office.
The two stars of the KIC 9832227 binary system could collide, causing a red nova, within the next five years, says one astronomer.
Sorry, nothing will be as epic as the red wedding. Nice try, though, KIC 9832227 binary system.
I guess they mean the two stars of the KIC 9832227 binary system could have collided, causing a red nova, 1,705 years ago.
We're just finding out what happened in westeros a long time ago, are we not?

Hitler's secret Yeti hunt: Nazis 'thought Bigfoot was missing link to Aryan race'
STEVE SMITH AGREE!
SILLY NAZIS LOOK IN WRONG PLACE. STEVE SMITH ONLY VACATION IN TIBET ONCE IN GREAT WHILE.
The crackpot theory suggests a Nazi occult organisation funded an expedition to find the abominable snowman in Tibet between May 1938 and August 1939.
Obviously just a cover story to hide their retreival of the staff of ra headpiece. And it would have worked too, if not for that damn meddling archaeologist.
Reinhold Messner has a taxidermied "Yeti" once owned by Nazis.
Don't white people carry Neanderthal genes? So, not completely wrong.
"missing link to Aryan race"
Well, kinda, yeah. What is the percentage of Neanderthal DNA in whitey? Sadly there are no purebreds left, we ate them all.
A self-described UFO skeptic in Canada says he can't identify a flying object that looks like a Star Trek starship.
UFO skeptic rates higher on the social scale than Trekkie, I guess.
What doesn't?
Isn't 'Trekkie' considered the baseline? The Hitler of the social scale?
Nope, Trekkies are still near the top of the Geek Hierarchy. Of course, this chart was made many years ago, and could probably be updated.
Obviously if they distribute it in pdf.
Nice! Thanks for that.
Phew. There are a lot of links here.

La La Land won a record breaking seven awards at the Golden Globes.
I thought Meryl Streep's acceptance speech won all of the awards.
It was bold, bold and brave!
She spoke truth to power. Just like Obama does. We should all be very proud of her.
Finally, a Hollywood celebrity with the requisite bravery necessary to speak out against Trump. Unfortunately, she'll be the among the first to experience Trump's gulags.
Hollywood loves virtue signaling.
Wait until it merges with Clooney's speech creating the greatest smug storm ever.
The Perfect Smug Storm.
I briefly flipped past the golden globes and it was some woman just speaking endlessly, breathlessly, adoringly about how wonderful Meryl Streep was while Streep awkwardly watched from just feet away. I couldn't bear to keep watching after a few minutes. I was thinking about how Meryl Streep has reached a point in her career where her job is just to sit around and eat banquet food and listen to people talk about how wonderful she is.
This may be Obama's first bout of self-reflection in his political life.
"Some" can equal 0.01%
I doubt very much that he intended anything as high as that.
Obama and Hillary seem to believe that "taking responsibility" means just saying the words.
That's all it's meant since Waco.
Obama also said he and the president-elect were "sort of opposites,"
They're both narcissists who talk out of their asses on topics they know nothing about. Whether Trump will have the same knack as Obama for making absolutely everything worse remains to be seen.
Look, Obama is a Chicago Democrat, Trump is a New York Democrat. That's as opposite as you can get. They don't even agree on the meaning of "pizza."

Preventing blindness is ableist nonsense, so there's that to keep in mind.
They just put the injured squirrel down and then bring out a healthy other one. They're all the same.

When a Democratic administration is in power, under any circumstances- even to save the country, they are anathema.

So brave.

Leaving a healthy economy behind (4.7 UE, inflation dead, cut deficit in half, 75 consecutive months of private sector job creation, tripled stock market, created more wealth than any other POTUS).
If Reagan had done this well wingnuts would be licking his dusty nutsack.
A healthy economy that has bounced back despite Obama's best efforts. Without the government's "interventions" it would've bounced back far quicker. Just like when FDR's economic policies managed to extend the Great Depression for years.
Debatable. The US performed much better than Europe has.
When it became apparent that our banking system had raised sufficient capital (due to a 2009 program called SCAP) we rebounded quickly while Europe is still struggling with their banks.
The labor force participation rate is the lowest since the 1970s, if the rate was the same as when Obama took office unemployment would be much higher. Not a single instance of 3% growth or greater for his entire presidency, and doubling the national debt. Weakest "recovery" since the Great Depression. Get Obama's balls out of your mouth and pay your bet, assnugget.

Bush left a $1.4 trillion deficit in 2009, as you note. The CBO published that number before he left office.
Now it is less than half that amount.

Odd how the numbers started going down when Team Red took over the House.
Of which 1 trillion was a one-time expense, and the front end of a big recession so receipts dipped.
Not that he wasn't a spend-happy big-government Republican. But let's be honest.
The reason Obama never submitted a budget was so that they could continue spending at the huge levels of "stimulus" era Washington without actually saying so.
The last decade has represented a complete abdication of responsibility by the national government. You can claim no glory for either party off of anything in the last decade. Strike that. Make it a decade and a half.
Spending is controlled by Congress.
The Republicans left in 2007 with a debt of $161B
In TWO WHOLE YEARS!, the Dems jacked it up to 1.4T
then the deficits started dropping again when the elephants took over the house.
Well that's interesting. How did he create wealth, exactly? Educate me.
First, you take a bunch of money from productive people. Then you give it to unproductive people. Boom! Prosperity.
Leaving a healthy economy behind (4.7 UE record low laborforce participation rate and record high food stamp beneficiaries, inflation fixed income investments dead, cut deficit in half debt nearly doubled, 75 consecutive months of private sector job creation the weakest recovery on record, tripled stock market, created more wealth than any other POTUS).

He's done almost everything wrong, but loosening the Cuba restrictions is the best thing he did. I also think Guantanamo should be closed.
I'm OK with opening up Cuba to the influences of American culture. Thought that was the correct move, given sanctions had 50 years to work and did nothing to achieve their original goal (getting rid of a commie regime 90 miles from our coast). I also am loving the lamentations of the lefties who want to preserve Cuba in some sort of Marxist "paradise" stasis, so they can vacation there and get an "authentic" experience and feel all subversive.

+8 weeks' vacation
8? I thought I got excessive leave time.
Most of the govt people I worked with accrued the max amount of carry-over leave every year. It added up to a fuckton.
I did that in about 5 years at my defense contractor job. Max. 400 hours, which had been gradually reduced from about 600 10 years prior. that's 10 weeks.
Thing is, I was only accruing 10 hours/month.
Almost never taking vacation can have that effect. I don't know how many hours just evaporated (if you fail to get down to 390 before the month's accrual date, it goes away forever).
That's not even including the contractors, I assume? At my last job, 70% of the bureau I worked for was contractors.

President Obama awarded himself a medal last week. Notice all the adoring Soldiers and Marines in the stands saying farewell to their CINC.

Notice all of the empty seats. Do you think there was anyone there who hadn't been ordered to attend other than Barry?
I'm starting to get the distinct feeling Trump could take down 22 cats stuck in a tree in under three minutes, bang Merryl Streep (in under two minutes leaving her with the bill), save several kids from a burning fire AND fix all of Obama's self-inflicted mess and people are still gonna scream, 'but he made fun of a handicap!'
What I hate about all this and find so tiresome is the hypocrisy. Trump is a jackass, sure, but by multiple accounts Hillary Clinton treats her underlings like dogshit. Staff, Secret Service, etc. But because Trump is more public about it that makes him a monster? Give me a break.
All the stories that I've heard say that Trump treats good employees very well. He treats enemies and idiots like dogshit.
Trump doesnt treat his staff badly. He just calls idiots and liars out. There is a big difference.
but he made fun of a handicap
Stossel has an article that was posted here where John says that this is a lie. Sullum repeated the lie in his column this morning. According to Stossel, the only way he made fun of a handicap is by comparing Republicans to them. What the non-insane would call 'making fun of Republicans'.
I've also seen this is another example of Trump doing "flustered loser" and not "handicapped guy" --- he has the same hand gyrations and facial expressions in each example. There's a video compilation of all of the times he's done these gestures. Not saying it's true at all, and perhaps he was making fun of the palsied reporter, but it seems like his go-to move whenever he wants to make fun of someone who can't get their shit together.
The Burma thing makes me sad. Just more evidence to never trust a politician.
You know who else spent time as a political prisoner?
Mark Basseley Youssef?
Charles Manson?
Napoleon Bonaparte?
OT:
Motivation factor is low when temps are in the single digits but I managed to finish the first pass of my (damn!) novel.
Now it's edit/rework time. More later.
Congrats.
I've been sidetracked into writing a fantasy piece instead of the books I've been trying to complete since the start of 2016. But that's up to 26k words now and moving.
Now if only I knew how to market it (or what to call the darn thing)
Nice.
My advice? Add more curse words.

There was a man who did not enjoy the craft.
I think that was humble-bragging.
La La Landing a shred of hope on a hook of awards, a snake pit crowded with rich stinkers tranced on Marxian creed comes to grip with their flaccid inability to hammer societal submission through massive flickering hypnotic screens set in hushed murky halls.

Thanks!
OMFG....I might need that TV key chain thingie, because today I have to listen to Meryl Streep on CNN over and over and over. Then listen to multiple exhaustive analyses about the significance of her speechifyin, as if it's the geopolitical issue of the year. They're now reviewing tapes of Trump supposedly mocking this journalist. Next up: CSIS white paper.
SHE BROUGHT THE HOUSE DOWN!
/burp.
Do you work in a waiting room or something?
I sit about 10 feet from the office kitchen/dining area.
Obviously, you need to murder a coworker or two to move up the cubicle ladder.
My condolences. Turning it off might not be palatable but I think you could probably walk in and turn down the volume.

Looking back in time is so yesterday.

Reminded of this @CasMudde paper on why Canada lacks a prominent far-right movement https://works.bepress.com/cas_mudde/116/ "
Apparently, to Captain Projection multiculturalism = no far right parties in Canada. I highly doubt he actually read the paper.
Over to Pan and JT.
today I have to listen to Meryl Streep on CNN over and over and over.
Speaking truth to power!
I can't even imagine the amount bravery and determination it must take for a Hollywood A-lister to speak out against a Republican, at an awards ceremony filled with people who agree with you no less. Those pussy ass Soviet dissidents got nothing on Meryl "Truth to Power" Streep.
I need an update on the State of the Disunion. How is the commentariat these days?
Optimistic yet at the same time pessimistic.
A pleasurable feeling deep in the bowels?
What about Mexicans and pot?
How is the commentariat these days?
It hurts when I do *this*.
I am one who is happy that we now have a president that does not accept everything the CIA etal tell him
The intelligence assessment of Russians and their hacking activities is so last week already.
By next week, it will all be ancient history.
I think the reason The Meryl Streep speech is playing so well in the press is because the press are slowly getting the impression that not only were they wrong in gauging the public's support for the progressives and Hillary Clinton, they were wrong in gauging support for journalists and journalism.
Here's somebody saying that the press has a sacred responsibility to hold Presidents accountable--as if the press isn't awful.
But the press is awful, and most Americans are hostile to it--for the same reasons they're hostile to all the other elitists.

California funded the first sex reassignment surgery for an inmate in the U.S.
This worries me, and not just for the usual "California is crazy" reasons. There's the horrid possibility of the government imposing involuntary sex reassignment on inmates, in a 21st century version of "Three generations of imbeciles are enough."
"We're not castrating all the males on the 'sex offender' list; we're just giving them sex reassignment surgery. You don't think that's fair? Well, you're right - we need to extend that to inmates convicted of other offenses as well."
Hillary Clinton attended a performance of The Color Purple and received three standing ovations.
Let's see how she does at an NHRA or NASCAR event.

See the McCabe hit on Laine?
As an overweight white guy, I was wearing shorts when it was 40 degrees or so. A woman at the grocery store asked "HOW are you wearing shorts?!?" and I replied, utterly deadpan, "I have a high percentage of Neaderthal DNA. That's just science." She edged away from me.
"not a yeti", but soon right?
What, "I own a belt" wasn't good enough for you?
