Reince Priebus says Donald Trump accepts the intelligence community's conclusion about Russia's role in election-related cyber attacks. Barack Obama insisted in an interview on ABC News that he did not underestimate Vladimir Putin but may have underestimated the impact of "cyberhacking and so forth on our open societies". Obama also said he and the president-elect were "sort of opposites," and that he takes "some responsiblity" for the massive electoral losses the Democratic Party suffered during his presidency. 89-year-old Charlie Brotman, who has announced every presidential inauguration parade since Dwight Eisenhower in 1957, is being replaced by a younger Trump supporter. Hillary Clinton attended a performance of The Color Purple and received three standing ovations.

  • Benjamin Netanyahu says the suspect in a attack by truck in Jerusalem that killed 4 may have supported ISIS.
  • Mexican authorities have arrested an American citizen accused of shooting a U.S. consulate official in Guadalajara.
  • Free speech arrests are on the rise in Myanmar, whose head of government is now Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi.
  • California funded the first sex reassignment surgery for an inmate in the U.S., although the federal government could end up paying for up to 95 percent of the costs.
  • The two stars of the KIC 9832227 binary system could collide, causing a red nova, within the next five years, says one astronomer.
  • A self-described UFO skeptic in Canada says he can't identify a flying object that looks like a Star Trek starship.
  • La La Land won a record breaking seven awards at the Golden Globes.

Of course a movie about entertainment people in LA, constructed mostly out of redone scenes from other movies, gets these kinds of awards. It was made for this audience. Outside of Hollywood, nobody is much interested. Its not doing much box office.

Hitler's secret Yeti hunt: Nazis 'thought Bigfoot was missing link to Aryan race'

The crackpot theory suggests a Nazi occult organisation funded an expedition to find the abominable snowman in Tibet between May 1938 and August 1939.

It was led by Professor Ernst Schaefer, who reported directly to SS boss Heinrich Himmler, a believer in nutty occult conspiracy theories.

Ahnenerbe ? the most secretive Nazi institute ? was founded by Heinrich Himmler in 1935 to find proof that the Aryan race once ruled the entire globe.

But it soon started researching the paranormal, UFOs and occultism due to Himmler's obsession these topics.

I briefly flipped past the golden globes and it was some woman just speaking endlessly, breathlessly, adoringly about how wonderful Meryl Streep was while Streep awkwardly watched from just feet away. I couldn't bear to keep watching after a few minutes. I was thinking about how Meryl Streep has reached a point in her career where her job is just to sit around and eat banquet food and listen to people talk about how wonderful she is.

Report: Caitlyn Jenner Wants To Pose Nude In 2017

The 67-year-old former Olympic athlete and reality star plans on doing a nude photo shoot this year, according to a new report from Naughty Gossip. Though Jenner "had a slow 2016," there will be "a major comeback in 2017."

"Cait wants to do something along the lines of what Kim did on the cover of Paper magazine," a source told the publication. "No one has worked harder than Cait to get the body she wants and, naturally, she wants to show it off."

The future of intimacy is remote-controlled orgasms

"We're absolutely a tech company," explains Brian Dunham when I ask how he thinks OhMiBod fits in with the rest of the show. "Our category just happens to be sexual health and wellness."

It seems there can hardly be any doubt about that, what with last year's Lovelife krush ($149), a smart kegel exerciser that guides women through pelvic floor workouts and tracks user progress via smartphone app, still taking a prominent spot at the booth. This year, the companion app will expand to allows users to engage in long-distance play with their partners, manually controlling the krush as a vibrator. This Go Play functionality will also apply to a new wearable vibrator, the Lovelife Please ($129).

    1. WTF   8 years ago

They all have the same one, it's called "whining".

    2. Aloysious   8 years ago

Result: Your activist superpower is: Creating Portals!

This superpower gives you the ability to connect any two places in the universe ? and connection is exactly what you create with your art or writing. You can move people into action, capture what they're feeling, and share your own story of resistance with your creative self-expression. What you do is vital to keep the movement's heart beating. As your art feeds others, make sure you also stay connected with how it feeds you.

      You are the ORGANIZER.

A challenge from the elements like rain on the day of an outdoor rally is no match for you. Your quick thinking and organizing skills help you anticipate all possibilities and have a plan in place. Others know they can count on you to be resourceful, mobilize people, and get things done. Be careful not to overexert yourself, though ? you deserve to take a break just as much as anyone else.

      You are the VISIONARY.

A little clairvoyance can go a long way in social justice activism. Your strength is analysis, so you understand how our everyday experiences fit into the bigger picture. You have a smart take on the issues we're facing and on strategies for what's coming up next. It's great to look ahead ? but also remember to give yourself some time to be in the present moment for your own self-care.

    Visit a Squirrel Hospital

Near Boulder, Colorado, Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center houses a squirrel rehab center. National Geographic visited and made the video below, showing us what life is like inside a "squirrel hospital."

The patients are mainly orphaned baby squirrels and injured adults. It's not easy rehabilitating squirrels. They need careful handling as patients, along with a hands-off process to reintroduce them to the wild.

Come for the cute squirrels, stay for the good work.

A game of 'Family Feud' at home turns into screwdriver attack in ear

The fight erupted during a game of "Family Feud" they were playing at a home at about 11 p.m. Jan. 1, according to the arrest report.

Jerneen Green, 42, was arrested on suspicion of felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. She was jailed on Stock Island on $20,000 bond.

While Green said her niece, Tia Parrado, attacked her and she hit her back only in self-defense, Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies found Parrado bleeding from her ear and confused.

Parrado told deputies she was at Green's home when her aunt accused her of stealing money and attacked her, first hitting her in the mouth with a piece of wood and then stabbing her in the ear with a screwdriver when she tried to leave.

Nine Trump Nominees Who'll Face Extreme Vetting by Democrats

A marathon of Senate confirmation hearings starting this week will give Democrats the chance to put Donald Trump's Cabinet nominees on trial even though they have little chance of actually blocking any of them.

Democratic leader Chuck Schumer is in talks with Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on the full scope of the hearings -- demanding, among other things, full paperwork in advance and at least two days of hearings on eight of the most troublesome nominees for Democrats.

A ninth candidate -- Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions, picked to become attorney general -- will also face heavy fire but isn't on Schumer's list.

Obama Refugee Officials Worry About the Future Under Donald Trump

The problem for Richard and her allies is that the next President of the United States, who will effectively run her office when she leaves on January 20, disagrees with that conclusion. President-elect Donald Trump was swept into victory after comparing Syrian refugees to snakes and calling for the banning of Muslims before backtracking. One of his major promises on the campaign trail was to cut admissions for refugees to Syria and institute tougher vetting on those seeking asylum in the U.S., particularly those from areas fighting terrorism. "If I win they are going back," Trump said during a primary stop in New Hampshire about the refugees who have already been resettled.

Inside and outside of the State Department, those who handle work around refugee resettlement are worried about the future of their work in the Trump administration. Many are working to share positive refugee stories with hopes of changing the hearts and minds of skeptics. While questions loom, the work continues?a little over 25,000 refugees have already been admitted to the U.S. since the beginning of the fiscal year?but on day one of the Trump administration things could change significantly.

Trump's Presidency Is Already Making Republicans Love Big Government More

A few weeks after the presidential election, Donald Trump's economic advisor Stephen Moore told a group of top Republican lawmakers that they no longer belonged to the conservative party of Ronald Reagan but to Trump's populist working-class party. Moore said Republicans, in this new era of Trump, should be "less ideologically pure" and instead try to help Trump give Americans what he promised them: trade protections, massive infrastructure spending, and a border wall.

This is the same Stephen Moore who up until November 8 had spent much of his career arguing for supply-side economic reforms, ample immigration, and free trade. Not anymore. Trump's election has turned him into an economic populist. "Having spent the last three or four months on the campaign trail," he told The Hill, "it opens your eyes to the everyday anxieties and financial stress people are facing." For Moore, as for Trump, that means the government is here to help.

Paul, thank you for saying what I'm sure is obvious to your readers. As is so often the case, we're indebted to you raising the issue for the willfully blind. Specifically, those in the media who certainly understand the brazen con game the Republicans have been playing: when they're in power and they use it for their purposes - tax cuts for rich people and to advantage the powerful, deficits are no problem. When a Democratic administration is in power, under any circumstances- even to save the country, they are anathema.

I think back to an earlier era and I know that David Brinkley, Walter Cronkite and company certainly wouldn't let this scam go unremarked. Please keep it up. I'm hoping your honestly will shame today's newsperson into action."

Arguably, after awarding said prize to Barack "Secret Unconstitutional Drone Kill List Cause Who Doesn't Like to Openly Admit to Breaking Their Oath of Office by Murdering Anyone They Want and Totally Get a Pass on it from the Media" Obama, awarding the Peace Prize to someone who merely mass incarcerates dissenters, but doesn't kill many of them, is a step in the direction of peaceful behavior.

Witness Nathan Wood saw the attack unfold and followed the woman while on the phone to triple zero so he could give police a better description.

'There was a guy following her, talking on the phone, he had balls,' a witness told the Daily Telegraph of Mr Wood's actions.

Mr Wood, a U.S. national applying for Australian citizenship, downplayed his act of heroism.

'I see Aussies punching sharks on the news, I figure I have got to do something to earn my citizenship,' he said.

Federal workers worry about their jobs under Trump

Trump, who ran on a promise to "drain the swamp," has identified hiring freezes at most federal agencies as a top priority for his early days in office. Republican lawmakers, many of whom have long advocated for reducing Washington's workforce, are looking to cut benefits and make it easier to fire poor performers.

The threats and preliminary steps taken by Congress have created anxiety for many of the government's 2.1 million employees.

"People don't know what to believe, and they're in a state of uneasiness," said Witold Skwierczynski, a Catonsville, Md., who heads the American Federation of Government Employees council that oversees Social Security Administration field offices. "That's the feeling I hear. People are unsettled."

I've worked in the private sector... they expect results!

I was at a holiday party with people who worked for the private sector.

They had no measurable goals because they were Environmental Law Compliance Officers, so they set a goal of having a local brew from each of the states in their region.

      Does that count as results?

Most of the govt people I worked with accrued the max amount of carry-over leave every year. It added up to a fuckton.

              1. Timon 19   8 years ago

I did that in about 5 years at my defense contractor job. Max. 400 hours, which had been gradually reduced from about 600 10 years prior. that's 10 weeks.

Thing is, I was only accruing 10 hours/month.

Almost never taking vacation can have that effect. I don't know how many hours just evaporated (if you fail to get down to 390 before the month's accrual date, it goes away forever).

      2. Kurmudgeonly Kristen   8 years ago

That's not even including the contractors, I assume? At my last job, 70% of the bureau I worked for was contractors.

I'm starting to get the distinct feeling Trump could take down 22 cats stuck in a tree in under three minutes, bang Merryl Streep (in under two minutes leaving her with the bill), save several kids from a burning fire AND fix all of Obama's self-inflicted mess and people are still gonna scream, 'but he made fun of a handicap!'

    1. Grand Moff Serious Man   8 years ago

What I hate about all this and find so tiresome is the hypocrisy. Trump is a jackass, sure, but by multiple accounts Hillary Clinton treats her underlings like dogshit. Staff, Secret Service, etc. But because Trump is more public about it that makes him a monster? Give me a break.

      1. Drake   8 years ago

All the stories that I've heard say that Trump treats good employees very well. He treats enemies and idiots like dogshit.

      2. Suthenboy   8 years ago

Trump doesnt treat his staff badly. He just calls idiots and liars out. There is a big difference.

    2. Marshall Gill   8 years ago

but he made fun of a handicap

Stossel has an article that was posted here where John says that this is a lie. Sullum repeated the lie in his column this morning. According to Stossel, the only way he made fun of a handicap is by comparing Republicans to them. What the non-insane would call 'making fun of Republicans'.

      1. Dick N. Bimbose (n?e Cooper)   8 years ago

I've also seen this is another example of Trump doing "flustered loser" and not "handicapped guy" --- he has the same hand gyrations and facial expressions in each example. There's a video compilation of all of the times he's done these gestures. Not saying it's true at all, and perhaps he was making fun of the palsied reporter, but it seems like his go-to move whenever he wants to make fun of someone who can't get their shit together.

I think the reason The Meryl Streep speech is playing so well in the press is because the press are slowly getting the impression that not only were they wrong in gauging the public's support for the progressives and Hillary Clinton, they were wrong in gauging support for journalists and journalism.

Here's somebody saying that the press has a sacred responsibility to hold Presidents accountable--as if the press isn't awful.

But the press is awful, and most Americans are hostile to it--for the same reasons they're hostile to all the other elitists.

"Americans' trust and confidence in the mass media "to report the news fully, accurately and fairly" has dropped to its lowest level in Gallup polling history . . . . down eight percentage points from last year."

California funded the first sex reassignment surgery for an inmate in the U.S.

This worries me, and not just for the usual "California is crazy" reasons. There's the horrid possibility of the government imposing involuntary sex reassignment on inmates, in a 21st century version of "Three generations of imbeciles are enough."

"We're not castrating all the males on the 'sex offender' list; we're just giving them sex reassignment surgery. You don't think that's fair? Well, you're right - we need to extend that to inmates convicted of other offenses as well."
